Ashlar's ears continued to flick back and forth, picking up little sounds a human wouldn't have even noticed. Aslo, his ears tended to twitch when he was confused about something. Now, he wasn't so naive as to not know the meaning of appreciation. He appreciated a lot of things: food, pleasure, new clothes, a bath, kind words, gentle treatment, beauty. The list was endless.

Following Judas fromt he tailor, he listened to the explanation for being purchased. "But...what has Ashlar done to deserve appreciation? Ashlar has done nothing for his Master so far, and yet Master has been so kind to Ashlar..." His ears were drooped and he didn't seem like the hyper, excited puppy he had before. Genuine confusion and even a little frustration were apparent. He just...didn't get it.

Once outside, Judas' hood immediately came back up, his lips only slightly visible, as the shadow cast by his cloak was lightest around his mouth.

"Is beauty not worth appreciating?" Judas asked with a laugh, deciding to go towards a jeweler. "I'm a very simple man. I appreciate beauty and loyalty."

Ashlar's entire demeanor shifted again. The confusion evaporated and once again he was the excited little puppy, happily keeping on Judas' heels. "Master thinks that Ashlar is beautiful? That makes Ashlar so happy! Ashlar loves being pretty for his Master."

He noticed they were headed for a jewelers shop and rushed ahead so that he could open the door for Judas this time. It felt so strange for someone to be opening doors for him, and his master was carrying his new clothes. "Master, shall Ashlar carry his clothes? Master should not have to trouble himself for Ashlar."

Judas didn't respond again to the topic of beauty, though he certainly didn't seem to be brushing it off.

"It's no trouble. Though if we purchase something heavy, I'm afraid you'll have to carry it. I'm not quite as strong as I should be," Judas said as he stepped inside the shop. He inspected many different trinkets, seeming to have a particular someone in mind as he looked. He had already told Ashlar that he could have jewelery, and hoped that if something caught the boy's eye that he would be honest about it and get it for himself.

Ashlar didn't need reaffirmation. Judas had called him beautiful and that's all he needed to know. It truly did make him happy to be regarded as pretty. Perhaps the kitsune was just a tiny bit vain, but he did love being praised for his looks.

They entered the shop, Ashlar stepping in right behind Judas. The kitsune's eyes very nearly sparkled as he took in all the jewels and gems set into beautiful silver or gold. His eyes took in each piece of jewelry, turning them over in his mind, trying to picture himself wearing any of them. It had been a long, long time since he'd worn any jewelry.

None of the pre-made pieces really called to him, though. Sure, they were beautiful, but they didn't reflect him, and none of the gems spoke to him. Now, if he could find one that resonated with his magic, that would be pretty amazing. Instead, he moved to stand beside Judas and tilt his head as he looked at whatever Judas was looking at. "Ashlar didn't see anything that Ashlar couldn't live without. Is Master getting a present for someone?"

Judas nodded slowly, carefully examining something. "For Rage. She deserves more pretty things."

Ashlar pondered that statement thoughtfully. "That is an interesting name. Which one is Rage?"

Anonymous

"The young girl that might be a mage," he answered, pointing to one of the pretty hair decorations to have the jeweler wrap it up. "Isa named her. They...named each other. Mrai says Isa named her Rage because when she's enraged she becomes very powerful. Isa named her as a warning to others to let her be."

Ashlar let that all sink in for a moment. He'd be meeting this girl who might be a very powerful mage. Who was named Rage, because apparently she did something spectacular when she got really mad. Interesting household he was being brought into.

"Ashlar guesses that makes sense. Ashlar was named after his great-grandfather, and shares his father's middle name. Nothing special. Although his brothers are named Tempt and Raven, and his mother is named Rail. Strange names run in Ashlar's family, on his mother's side."

"I have no idea where my name comes from," Judas laughed, taking the wrapped hair decoration and paying the jeweler as it was handed to him.

He then pulled a small woman's ring out of a small leather pouch at his waist and offered it to the jeweler. "I'd like to commission something in silver, but this size," he told the man. They discussed the details while the jeweler measured the ring. Once notes had been taken, the ring was handed back to Judas, who put it away and gave the man a small down payment to show that he was good for the price.

Judas then left the jeweler's shop, again opening the door for Ashlar. "Is there anywhere you'd like to look? Or anything you'd like to get?"

Ashlar watched in curiosity as Judas commissioned a ring to be made. The ring was tiny, he wondered if it was for the young mage that he had been told about. He had to assume so, since his master seemed to want to buy lots of things for her. Ashlar decided that this girl, Rage, must be important if she was being showered with so many presents from his master.

There it was again, his master held the door for him as they exited the jewelers. The demon didn't allow his cheery attitude to fade, but his head was still not used to having someone open doors for him. He was the slave, he should be holding them for the master.

"What does Ashlar want?" The boy tapped his chin thoughtfully. It had been a long time since he'd genuninely been asked what he wanted or what he thought. "Ashlar has never thought about it before. Masters don't usually ask Ashlar what he wants."

Judas glanced back at Ashlar as they stepped outside and let out a very soft, almost undetectable chuckle. "How about we take turns?" he asked, referring to opening doors for each other.

He then turned his attention back ahead and headed for a shop that seemed to leisure items, though he seemed to have a specific item in mind. However, he was sad to see that (at least in this shop) there was no tobacco to be found, nor was there a form of pipe. Perhaps this world was behind his own? Or maybe such plants didn't grow here; though they had discovered shortly after coming here that most of the plants they knew in their own world were in this one as well. Perhaps it was due to the region they were in?

Oh well, he was sure that Bramley possessed seeds of different plants for smoking.

"You don't have to think about it right now if you don't want to," he told Ashlar, continuing their conversation. "But if you do think of anything, I'd like it if you told me."

Take turns? Well, what choice did he really have? Ashlar thought that he should be the only one holding doors, but that was just the slave in him thinking. Something inside his head jolted. Of course that was the slave thinking! The slave was the only one to be doing the thinking.

They went to a shop that, well, Ashlar wasn't even sure what kind of shop it was, but if Judas wanted to look, then that was cool with him. Whatever his master had been looking for, he apparently didn't find it. His mind was still trying to wrap around all the new stimulis it was being subjected to.

"Ah, well Ashlar will tell Master if there is something that he really wants. It will be easier for Ashlar to think after the excitement of a new owner has passed. Also, knowing what Ashlar is allowed to have will help, but Ashlar will figure that out as he gets to know Master better."

"You're allowed anything that my comrades might reasonably want. We're an odd sort, but we're very much like a family. It'll take a while for you to get used to each other, but you're part of our family now. Whether or not they like it." Chuckling softly, Judas led the way to where his horse was tethered.

After slipping their purchases into a bag on the horse's side, he easily mounted the animal and offered his hand to Ashlar to assist him on his way up. "Shall we go home now?" he offered, his lips pulling into a soft smile.

Ashlar nodded, pretending to understand. He was still getting used to this new position in life he'd been thrust into. Being berated, beaten, used, and abused. Those were things he was used to. Judas' behavior was completely alien to him. Being part of this odd family would definitely take some getting used to. "Ashlar will try to get along with them all. Ashlar will try to learn quick!"

When they got to the horse, Ashlar watched Judas put there things into a saddlebag and mount up. If not for all the other strangely nice things his master had done and said, he would have been surprised at the offer to ride. He knew that arguing that a slave should not ride with a master would be dismissed, so he grabbed the offered hand and easily hopped up behind Judas.
