This thread takes place after some events that happened here. Feel free to read if you wish, if not that's fine! But it explains why she's so infatuated with this one item in my post~

---------

Her pride was hurt more than one could know, to have lost the bid on the vanity she most absolutely had to have left her grieving. So what if it was just some piece of furniture? The sculpture of the wood made the piece a work of art, and now as she sat at her own, lack luster vanity at home, she gave way to a sigh and deposited her kohl away. She always liked to wear the green kind, as they accented her eyes the most, but today she just didn't care. She felt wounded and vulnerable, where she normally stood with pride, today it was just too difficult to get herself to feel as if she had worth.

Silly, it was, yes, but here in Essyrn, as a merchant prince or princess, you had to spend money to make money and to keep yourself known among your own class. And the high class merchants were a ruthless bunch. And just because she was bested out of the auction didn't mean she couldn't pay to find another vanity of equal opulence. And the idea of it perked her up a bit when she decided to go into Essyrn to do a bit of shopping. So she rounded up the usual servants and slaves and departed, making her way down the city streets towards the bustling market place. And it was especially busy that day. She had to push her way through the crowds to get anywhere near the woodworkers tent, and when she got there, she wilted a bit to see he was not there. His child explained the father had gone home early. He was ill and could not bring any of his new craft works there that day. And when Evelyn Gray let her eyes scan the wares, she saw nothing of interest and turned away, feeling defeated.

Not ready to go home, but feeling quite out of place and a tad bit paranoid as the Essyrnis stared at her and whispered as they usually did, she ordered her small caravan to move about with her towards the river cafe so as to eat before returning back to her home on the Niafi River, in the West Valley.

Tea...
Hopefully tea would make her feel better, but as she sipped at her cup, she felt anything but relieved. Perhaps there was something else she could purchase? Something else to keep her mind at ease? And as she moved a hand to brush her blond hair from her face, her hands brushed against something that was not there. And her hand froze in place.
Her earring!

It was gone!

The streets of Essyrn were always so packed with little tid-bits of information to siphon off to the highest bidder and items from those more fortunate than those having to sell their wears around just hanging by a thread, and being guarded more than the shopkeepers items could possibly be. Garreth's time tended to be at night, but his notion of keeping his skills sharp was more of a live action practice rather than some sort of dexterity training... What better way to keep yourself an expert of pickpocketing than actually picking pockets? With that in mind he moved through the market place, anyone with notable signs of a hefty coin-purse or items that could be lifted were obviously marks for the thief to go through the motions with... But to test his skills he wanted something, more...

It was there that he saw her.... Wasn't hard to spot her considering she had a band of servants and slaves following her every move, if anyone deserved to be pocketed by him it was a princess like Evelyn Gray. Garreth did not hold much ill will against those in the city who pitted themselves under the title 'Merchant prince of princess', for him it wasn't truly a matter of stealing from them to show them that they were just like those they enslaved, he was a thief... He may not like the idea of slavery but he was more interested in what was not nailed down and expensive on her person or in her palace. But now she was out of her palace and in the marketplace looking for something... As he looked from within the busy crowds the thief could make an outline of her destination from the movement that she rode across the wave of people, the woodworkers tent... Not a bad place for a grab and certainly not a hard place to get lost again in this almost riotous wave of shoppers as they went about their business.

He had to wait for her to exit the tent, he followed her as she slowly moved across the market to her destination. He could have waited for her to get there but he could not afford to stay in any one place lest it could bring attention to the hood he wore to make his identity a guarded secret while also masquerading as one who simply wanted to avoid the dreaded sun of the Essyrn sky. His position outside the tent allowed him so information on the woman's reasoning for being there. A vanity? Oh if only the slaves could have such issues to deal with, they did have to fight to the death for others amusement but if they realized that they never could sit down and do their hair and make-up surely their wills would be shattered.

As she exited she called out to her caravan to take themselves to the cafe so as to let her rest. There shifting elsewhere gave the man time to get close to her, his dual origin would make him stand out his skin paler than any native to the land without the hood but he looked to take what he wanted while her back was turned. A woman's earrings are so easily lost on trips like this, Garreth always found it easy to bereft women of their expensive clothing one way or another, and considering her disappointed mood the thief's gentle hand would barely register as he slipped the earring of the woman into a small pouch on his arm and looked to slink away in the crowd. If it wasn't for the vanity of rich women I'm sure many men would be a lot poorer by now... His thoughts as found himself hold up along the bridge connecting the cafe the woman had now taken her place at and his escape route he only hoped she'd have trouble pick out a thief at market...

Naturally, Evelyn could not conceive that her earring had been stolen. Who would steal one without the other? That was just in bad taste! However, as she ordered her servants and slaves to help her look, she began to realize her efforts might be futile, and as they searched high and low along the River Cafe, and then back tracked towards the wood maker's tent, she found herself sighing with exhaustion and wilting all the more for it.

The earring was gone. Gone forever, and there was no means to get it back now. Reluctantly, she touched the other, remaining earring still in place before plucking it out and peering down at it. She wouldn't care so much about jewelry, but today was a day she was trying to fix her wounded pride. This was just adding salt to the injury. She couldn't believe the luck, and of all of the pairs of earrings to lose, these ones were her favorite- not only because they were of her favorite color and she liked how gold looked on her person, but because they were given to her by her grandmother, whom she had never met, from Connlaoth, before she had passed.

Now, they were just....

Gesturing to her entourage, she informed them it was time to go. And just in time too, for the sun was beginning to set, and the desert got extremely cold at night. She could at least get home while the sands were still warm. So like a dog with it's tail between it's legs, she began to leave. But the market place was still packed, and she found herself uncomfortably pushing shoulders with other Essyrnis, and of course, they looked none too happy to be bumping shoulders with a golden haired foreigner who wanted to be Essyrni.

By the Gods, could this day get any worse!?

Seemed that the fair lady was running about, unsure of what had become of her earring that was now resting safely in the ownership of the thief who had taken it. But now he was sure that as she had her servants search that this item most likely held some sort of importance to her... No one even a merchant noble acts so aggressively to search for a trinket. Even after going back to the tent she did not find it of course as he had it, it certainly was a good day to watch his back, he was watching from afar as the search grew further, he couldn't risk being caught unawares by someone who could blab to the noble in the eager fashion that anyone would for a few coins.

However he saw as she touched the other remaining earring in her possession he saw that she was seemingly giving up, Garreth's view for those even from afar was sharp and her small exasperated breaths were tell-tale of someone who had lost something and had lost the hope in getting it back. Suppose that would do some good... Now that he was there he felt the rush of getting away with theft, it was quite entertaining knowing that he had got away with something he felt that maybe he could try to get some more training done... Like with a heist...

He knew his target, in fact she was moving away as he thought about it... She was uncomfortable and quite vulnerable at the moment, Garreth was sure that the blonde haired beauty whose riches definitely piled much higher than those at the market could do with having some of those riches taken off her hands, first maybe the other earring when he staked the place... Then the plan could become a little more fluid... Stealing things didn't always have to be methodical, steal and dash was always a worthwhile effort even for the most expert thief, being that it was a dishonest profession speed to complete it tended to be more important of course...

Watching as the noble made her way back Garreth would take care to track her, when he found her place, then was the time to make a move and get some more income from the good nobles of Essyrn.

By the time Miss Gray arrived back in her home, she was thoroughly exhausted. She ordered her entourage to disperse, and her evening slaves to help her derobe and into a sheer, white silk night dress she went and down at her vanity she sat, now alone and thumbed her ear which was vacant of the earring she wore. She stared at herself distantly, her lips flat, nearly frowning before she sighed and decided to pick up her brush and pull it through her golden curls.

The stalking of the place had been done within an hour or so of the woman returning to her home, he waited for the night to fall before he would make his move if only to make it easier for himself. He could catch glimpses of the security and serving staff along with the slaves within the palace and charted a natural course of where they were going too and fro so to avoid and take what he could as easily as possible... A thief had to be cautious or they be caught or worse... Looking from a nearby roof of the area he could see a notable balcony that seemed an easy route into the main building, with a little bit of luck and no small amount of skill it wouldn't be too hard to get in through there.

The lady of the house if she was not busy brushing her hair through her less than stellar vanity would note that the door leading to the balcony of her chambers would seemingly be opened as a wind rolled through the room and creeped up from behind. There did not seem to be any sign of forced entry yet it could not have been possible for it to have opened by itself... Could it? For Garreth the door meant two things, one he was happy to see a rather attractive woman in a night dress from the shadows of the room, two... He did not have good luck with his entry points when he seemingly chose the owner's own room...

Though the desert was hot, the nights were crisp, and the cool night breeze that drifted in through the window tickled at her skin and sent bumps across her skin. Even her candelabra wavered, a few of the flames snuffing out. THe hair she had been brushing tossed about her face, the last few curls evading her brush as she turned around on her gilded, miniature bench.

"Of course Kafika would leave the drapes open," she said, rising quickly from her chair and storming over to secure the heavy drapes. Essyrn was not a place known for many glass windows, and frankly, she adored the fresh smell of the night breeze. But today she was just not in the mood for any inconveniences, and made haste to tie the drapes closed real tight.

She sighed once that was good and settled, but upon believing she saw some sort of figure in her mirror she whirled around and pointed out her brush accusingly.

"Kafika? Is that you there?"

But not a sound came in reply. But she couldn't help but get the distinct feeling she was being watched. And she took a few hesitant steps back towards her vanity where she picked up candelabra and armed with a brush, she crept towards the dark corner where she swore she felt eyes upon her.

"Kafika?" she went on, taking another creeping step in that direction. "Rallana?"

Seemed that the woman's servants were always leaving the drapes open so Garreth hoped that his luck was a bit better than usual, the owner closed up the drapes... Seemed his theft of her previous item made it all the less likely that she'd like having the breeze roll through the area. However while he hoped the world was finally giving him a break it seemed the shadows were not helping him out tonight as he did not seemingly phase into them as he had hoped as the lady of the house seemed to look at his location to see something within... That things was the thief in the shadows...Who was not a fan of being spotted.

Seemed she thought that he was one of her serving staff... He could not try to emulate their voices as he was unsure if they were even male or female... That would certainly make it a pain and embarrassing to boot. The woman armed with the candelabra and a brush would be upon him soon... It would not be advantageous to let her get in close to him while in the corner. As she called out towards the darkened corner a sudden shift of the shadows would be notable, all before the hooded man would move as swiftly as the night itself out her own position.

Grabbing her arm with the candelabra and putting the other on her mouth Garreth looked sternly as the woman seemed prepared for the worst. "Don't scream now... I'm not a fan of hurting women but I'm even less a fan of a prison cell... So I'm asking you not to try and scream..." The man was going out on a limb as he was forced to be aggressive in the world of a sneak-thief. This is what I get for being over-zealous and expecting this to be easy... Seems vanity doesn't just stay on the female side of the spectrum... Sighing to himself he looked to the woman and waited for some sort of retaliation... She was Connlaothian by the look of her... Women of such a country and such a class tended to not take too kindly to being handled roughly... Even if it was for their own good.

visualspice

Her eyes went wide when the shadows came alive, and she felt the man's strong grip upon her, and could smell the sweat on his hands as he kept his hand tightly over her mouth. Fear muted her. Her heart was pumping heavily inside her chest, and this man might as well have been speaking Yoreiqi for she couldn't comprehend anything in that moment of fear. And fear made people do a lot of bold things. And all she could think of was hoping to get away from this cloaked man. So surprising even to her- she bit him. And she bit him hard.

It seemed that what he had expected of her was the least of his worries, she was seemingly struck so hard by fear that her fight response seemed to kick in before her flight... She bit him... Not an unexpected result but it was one that he didn't think would occur just because she was caught unaware, then again he did see some sort of attack coming, he had just hoped it was something more akin to a smack, teeth tended to be a pain to dodge when you are holding your hand over the person's mouth... Though as she bit into him, there would be no flinching back, simply a rush of tensed muscle then Garreth's face staying solid as rock as she bit into him. This all before he pulled her in closer then with the advantage of his position forced her down to the ground and took his hand out of her mouth, with his other arm now keeping her down by pushing down on the core of her chest.

"Now having a good looking woman would be a hit or miss any other day, but don't do that again...." His stern voice and demanding face was hopefully enough to halt the woman's rather hysterical actions, then again clearly Garreth was an idiot for even coming in here...

She should have realized the man whom snuck into her house wouldn't be some oblivious knave, but she was still surprised, and her expression showed it, as she was forced onto her back on the ground. Realizing she was at his mercy, and only just then realizing what he said, she glared up at him, her aristocratic arrogance shining through- and that pride mixed with both Essyrni culture, and that of her true blood of Connlaoth, as well.

"It would be a little hard in my predicament, but I don't wager I would like to do that again." And she jut out her chin, and grit her teeth. "You tasted like filth." Probably the filth he was. And if she survived this, who knew if she would get some disease from what she did!

Seemed that she had managed to calm herself down, if only to seemingly make an antagonistic stance towards the man that was now on top of her, the arrogance to make insults as he was in the position of power showed that clearly this was one of those that was not use to not having the power in there court... It made Calder quite unhappy to see that such a person could call him a filthy creature. "Perhaps, but I don't position myself in the buying of slaves and treat others like dirt for my own good, who knows what you'd taste like... I'm sure it'd be rather upsetting to the stomach..." As he placed his hand that she had bit on the ground, the hidden blade that was within the guard of the man's arm would shoot out just enough to show the woman below him that it was a viable threat.

"Now hurt feelings aside over the whole filth thing, because honestly I probably keep myself cleaner than you do, never a good idea to have a scent that dogs can track so being like that its almost doubly offensive.... But I'm rambling....I'm a thief not a killer, its bad for business if someone is to die on a job, even one as mucked up as this... And I'm sure as the lady of the house you'd prefer your continued existence over some jewels and coin... Or am I wrong it that?" He was waiting on her response hoping that she wasn't that haughty for her aristocratic nature...

visualspice

Steal from her? Well wasn't this the frosting on her cake to a day that was going completely and utterly horrid. She grit her teeth at him, even as fear mixed with her anger.
"So you've snuck into my house to steal from me?" she asked, trying to sound bolder than she felt. "And you think you can just get away with it?" And as she lay beneath him, she tried to see if she couldn't get a good look at his face, but the corner they were in was dark and his face was shrouded well from the shadows of his hood.

"And if you were no killer.."s he went on, testing the waters, and testing him- even if she knew it were foolish (though Evelyn Gray did a lot of foolish things in her arrogance), "Why carry such a blade?" It looked sharp enough to slit her throat... and that seemed to be the direction it was pointing.

It was quite a funny scene to view as she realized his intention for being in her home. "Well I'm not here to serenade you with any sort of love poetry and with my attire I thought that might be a bit obvious." She seemed to expect that he was unnerved by her position in the world and that stealing from her was a taboo that such plebeians as himself should never get close to getting near. Then with almost perfect timing he took out the earring that he had swiped from her earlier from within his concealed pocket. "This seems to show I have the qualifications to get away with it..."

Guessing she didn't think about the two connected thefts she seemed to goad him about his need for such a blade when he chose not to kill. "I said that killing on the job is in poor taste but that doesn't apply for when the night is dark and there are plenty of poor people with pointy weapons ready to shred into me for even a loaf of bread..." Looking down at the pretty on the outside rather disdainful on the inside noble he smirked from within the shadows. "I guess that you'd not have much experience from that, expect maybe the daggers other nobles seem to stab at you with their eyes..."

The woman continued to glare at him, but her expression changed greatly the moment the earring was produced.
"My earring!"

And her glare only intensified as he went on.

"Well if looks could kill, I'd hope my eyes would be cutting you several times over!" she snapped.
"And so you're here to steal..." she went on, arrogant and angry as ever. "What makes you think you can just get away with it? All I have to do is yell for help..."
But that blade was awfully close to being in a position to silence her-
She could only hope the man was only using it as a bluff.

And was that a smirk? She coudl barely see it, but it was almost as if she could feel it. And she hated smirks more than any other facial expression- for smirks reminded her of Emyr Kasabian and he was a man she truly loathed.

Seems that she understood that he was the culprit behind her theft, it took the time for the penny to drop but at least he wasn't kept waiting. She vocalized her wish for her vision to cut him to ribbons. "Maybe, seems to me that it would be more of a cut shaving than honestly killing..." Taunting her wasn't above him, hell she was still acting haughty after all this... He had to admire her tenacity at least.

Again judging his credentials to take from her she tried to proclaim that all she had too do was make a noise and his plan would be scraped. "Well if that's the case then you'd be out quite a few good servants as they tried to enter, and trust me it would take me much to throw you out of your own home wearing less than you already are... There are plenty of men and some women who I'm sure would be less kind as I if you were in that situation." Her pride was a strong point but it was a weakness for most nobility, blackmail or humiliation was something akin to poison to them, he had to be sure that she would not look to call a guard... A bloody affair would only go his way but it would look awful on his résumé

She couldn't believe his audacity as well.
"Seems to me your all talk. What did you come back here for anyway? The matching earring?" she asked in a huff, trying desperately to keep him preoccupied with her while hopefully, someone anyone might wonder into the room and spook him away. But that, of course, was wishful thinking.

The woman seemed to be rather judgmental and seemed to act as if she was without fault from stealing. "I could take the other earring, some of your more precious rich items, its irritating that you had to change as it would be easier to take it from you now, but then that would be difficult to deal with when it came to the keeping you down... Rings and bracelets hurt more than I like..."

"I'd like to see you try to steal the other!" she challenged, eyes flaring with anger. "I promise you you won't get even a penny out of me for your troubles." And she tried to struggle beneath his grasp, undeterred by the blade, even as it still kept her at bay.

Putting himself above her seemingly still just made her more and more adamant to refuse to be silent and not get in his way, it was admirable at first now it was just getting to be annoying. "Now I will have the other one, and perhaps anything else of value in that... Rather sad looking vanity but why do you honestly have to be this regrettably stand-offish, or is my company the only thing that is entertaining you tonight... Cause that would be a little sad..." A smirk of pretend pity seemed to run along his face now.
