"My sword, ey?"  Kassian raised a brow at Vahni in question, undecided if Vahni had meant that as suggestive as it had sounded or if this was another lapse in foresight.

The second the naga turned his back to rummage through that garish wardrobe, Ruben stalked right out of the room again.

That the servants would fulfill the naga's orders to the best of their ability, he did not doubt.

He just doubted that the best of their ability was worth anything.

Haven offered up a reassuring smile.  A little pang of guilt hit him at Hazel's refusal.  The man had been so accommodating, so ready to help at a moment's notice, and here Haven was asking for more.

"That's all right," he said.  He headed for the door, weaving around Hazel as he went.

He paused and his hand found Hazel's shoulder and gave it a friendly squeeze.  "You've done too much for me already, anyway.  I'll go out and buy something I can use."

Likely he wouldn't have to go more than twenty feet from the inn before finding something suitable.  A good thing, too.  Night was descending on them, and Haven's body felt like an empty husk for want of sleep.  His steps dragged, his shoulders slumped.  He would have to rest soon or he'd be no help to anyone.

Gospel gritted his teeth.  He found himself doing that a lot around her.  He held patience as one of his defining virtues.  That she dismantled it so easily spoke ill of him and not her.

It took a deliberate effort to dull his words into politeness.  "Let go, please."

Razi considered that.  He hadn't thought of it either—but then, why would he?  For whatever reason, the truth would not do for her people.

"You could lie," he offered.  "Or we could find a place to clean and section it before anyone sees the whole?"

And if that would not do, he would eat it himself, or find someone else who wanted it.  Above all, he would not see it wasted.

Ruben allowed himself to be propelled along, if only because it got him going in the direction he wanted.

At least the naga's servants were swift.  The question remained as to their competence.

"Later," he said, "after I have proof they're going to do this right."

Northern Serendipity / Great, Lusty Gods! [RHI]
July 15, 2015, 02:44:47 PM
Great lusty gods, that is a lot of dead animals.

At least a dozen of them.  Goats and chicken and cattle, all of them disemboweled and tossed aside carelessly.  They surrounded an...an altar?

It was a crude thing, a couple of stone slabs holding up another, horizontal stone slab.  Slightly glowing runes were etched into the stone and emitted a weak vapor.

A kind of horrified curiosity drove Zephan out of the cover of the tree line.  The animals looked like they'd been butchered hours ago--the gore that covered the ground had started to dry and congeal.  He ventured up the little hill toward the altar, his face a mask of disgusted fascination.

The peddler drew himself up, clearly regaining some of his confidence here.

"For such rare and unique stock?  Two dozen serpents."

Which was an outlandish, unheard of price for a slave.  The Shah did not pay so much for slaves.

The slave peddler's eyes darted back to Hawk, who answered the glance with a slow, predatory smile.

The peddler mopped the nervous sweat from his face with a sleeve and motioned for Scarab to follow him.

"You see, my lady," he said once they were out of earshot of Hawk, "his is somewhat a special case."

His hand rose to clutch at a simple emerald and gold necklace about his neck.  "He is bound by a charm in this necklace.  Whoever holds the necklace, holds his will.  Only..."

Here, the peddler paled, looking back in the direction they had come from.  "Only if ever the necklace is not touching the skin of a person--for even an instant--the charm will break and he will be free.  And he has sworn to...to make his displeasure known to any who have owned or sold him should he ever be free again."

"Ahaha...ah, you see, my esteemed lady..."  Sweat beaded upon the man's face, and his smile curdled, something like fear freezing his features.  His eyes darted to Hawk, who returned the look with a level, flat stare and hard eyes.

"That...has some difficulties, gracious one.  You see, he must go to someone, ah, vigilant.  Someone of utmost care and steadfastness."

As it happened, the peddler's life depended on this.

"It is so much work owning this one, truly!  He needs so much attention!  Let me show you an Adelan gladiator in the next row.  She is a great mountain of a woman.  They say she ripped the head off an opponent with her bare hands!"

"Even so..."  He'd have to find who was truly in command here.  This naga had the mind of a child, it couldn't actually be him.

Ruben wrenched at his arm.  "Let go of me."

"This one comes from the arena, esteemed lady," the slave peddler said.  "Where he apparently excelled.  His victories took on a reputation for being...rather the spectacle."

Which was to say extravagantly bloody, and marked by his habit of leaving his opponents in pieces.  And chunks.

"And I'm told he was favored by those lords and ladies who enjoy partaking of the gladiators."

Which was to say they went looking for the thrill of bedding a dangerous killer, and he provided well for them.

"But alas, my graceful one, he is not available for purchase to everyone.  Shall I show you my other Serenian stock?  I have many beauties, ones who are far less dangerous to own."

Razi switched the wing to his other shoulder, feathers dragging against his skin.  "It will feed you for many days!  Or feed many people."

To defy or to submit?  Hawk's life in the arena had become a refrain of this question, and here it was again.  Did he give his name, or insult the Essyrni by refusing it?  Her scrutiny bothered him not so much as her general existence in the first place.  He did not care if she looked at him--he was rather annoyed he had to look at her, however.  Every one of these slave-owning dogs affronted him with their presence.

It took him too long to decide.  The long beats of silence before he surrendered a terse, "Hawk," would be insult enough to a lady of such standing.

"Most esteemed lady," came the voice of the slave peddler, followed by the steady footsteps of the slave peddler down the row of stalls.  "Has my Serenian stock caught your eye?"

Kassian got a laugh out of that one.  "Hilt," he said.  "Shaft would be a quarterstaff or an arrow or some such.  No shaft on an actual sword."

"I surely do," he said, casting a glance at the sheep dog.  "They can smell the difference, after all."

Soralyn desperately wanted to go about untying everyone herself, but that would not do.  That much movement would surely attract attention.  No, she must rely on them all to do their part and do it well.  As it was, their voices were raising too high already and she had to hiss at them all to keep silence.

Only a few more to untie.  She leaned back to speak to the shifter.  "Not long now.  You must go to the horses.  Get them all loose, and spook them into a stampede."

Not a single soul would make it out of here if their pursuers had the advantage of horseback.

Living spirits, she was nigh unbearably precious.

He flashed her a toothy grin.  "I'm adept at recognizing other shifters, never fear."
