Luna been told by Fen very sternly not to enter Connlaoth. Of course with her, as with any curious child, that meant she simply HAD to go. She was wondering about in her human form, wearing  simple knee length skirt and a loose top, with no shoes.

The fabric was soft and supple and would make most commoners jealous in its material, though the young Forest Spirit knew nothing about that. For her everything simply was, and her task was to learn about it all.

She spotted a flock of sheep and instinctively started to move slower, in a stalking manner. Her eyes narrowed as she watched the fluffy animal she knew to be tender and tasty. She paid no heed to the people, if any, that were around her, she simply watched the sheep.

Sitting against a tree chewing absently on a blade of grass, Tessa half-dozed as she watched her flock while Fable weaved around the herd, keeping an eye on them and ensuring none strayed too far, though she really wasn't worried. Her sheep had grazed these fields without complication many times before, and the land was flat so she could easily see them all. It was a pretty uneventful day.

So that was why when Fable suddenly went rigid and starting barking, Tessa just about jumped straight up into that tree.

Startled, she pressed a hand to her chest and let out a breath when she saw Fable was just looking at a girl. Ah, so it was nothing, Fable was just being a good watchdog.

Calling to Fable to call her off, she thanked the dog and pet her to calm her, then rose to her feet with the aid of her crook, a little sore from sitting so long. "Hello? Miss?"

The lady was staring at her sheep rather intently, which was disconcerting. But it could have also been her imagination. Tessa always felt on edge and awkward around other people, so it was probably nothing.

Luna glared at the dog, it's barking have made the sheep wary. When the girl, who Luna had somehow not sensed, spoke the wolf girl started, her tail and ears popping out and doing what could only be described as 'fluffing'. Not exactly raising on end but not exactly flat either.

It was several seconds before Luna managed to control herself and put the extra bits away, looking at the girl with an expression that meant she felt she was in trouble. She knew Connlaoth was a country where magic was considered evil, and Luna was made up of magic, with a little bit of flesh to hold it all in.

"Ack!" The girl had a tail! A tail and ears! And both bore a striking resemblance to those of a wolf. Tessa gripped her crook tighter, entire body tense and eyes wide. She had heard the saying "a wolf in sheep's clothing" before, but a wolf in girl's skin? That was a new one!

Fable's ears went back and her lip curled in a growl, sharp teeth bared. Shifting uneasily, Tessa kept her hand on the dog's shoulders to reassure both the dog and herself.

"Um...miss?" Jeez, what was she supposed to say to that? "Miss? You're making the sheep nervous. I'd really appreciate it if you, ah...stopped that?" Actually, the sheep were dumb and hadn't yet noticed the danger, but it seemed the more polite thing to say than to admit that the girl was making her nervous.

Luna regarded the girl. The wolf girl could smell the fear coming off her. She made her tail and ears go away, sulkily, as she was afraid Fen would, at any moment, appear and scold her.

"Luna is sorry. Luna will not do it again." Luna was a good sulker, in fact her talent was almost commendable. However, sulking is not a skill that has much practical use, so she was more often then not scolded for it it anyway.

"Um...that's, uh, okay I guess?" Tessa said, still not sure how to handle this situation. She was awkward enough around people as it was, but around a strange girl that could apparently spout ears and a tail at will? It was a little uncomfortable and unsettling, but she saw no witch's mark on her, so maybe it wasn't magic?

Either way, it was a strange situation!

"Ah, what're you doing out here?" she said at last for lack of knowing what else to say or do, while moving cautiously toward her herd. The girl seemed apologetic, but she didn't want to take any chances; each lost sheep cost her.

Luna tilted her head. "Luna was told to stay away from this country, but Luna must learn so Luna came anyway. Then Luna saw the ship and remembered how good mutton was." Luna flopped down, and flopped is the only way to describe it, she simply folded up and sat down, her clothes getting covered with dirt and grass. He plucked a piece of grass and began chewing on it slowly. It was good for her digestion, not that she needed to eat.

"Uhh..." Tessa's hands tightened on her crook, but she loosened her grip when her fingers began to ache. Clearing her throat, she shook her head and waggled a finger at the girl.

"Well, uh, good as mutton might be, you can't have any sheep! So don't even think about it, okay?"

She spoke in the tone she often used when she had to scold Fable, for she seemed to be some sort of dog...wolf...girl thing, so maybe it would have a similar effect? God if she knew. Ansgar had helped her through many trials and tribulations, but nothing so strange!

Luna looked down at the ground after the scolding, thoroughly chastised. "Luna will not eat the sheeps." the wolf girl's stomach made a loud gurgling protest to this proclamation, had Luna's ears been out they would have gone flat back in shame. She was a mighty hunter, a stalker of all things meat, yet she was forbidden to hunt the food in front of her.

"Luna will not eat the sheeps" The wolf girl aid it more to herself the second time.

"Ah, good! See that you behave yourself." Ugh, and just like when she scolded Fable, Tessa couldn't help but feel a little bad for it after. The girl was doing the same sort of thing her dog did, pouting and looking ashamed.

Tessa cleared her throat and let her shoulders relax. "Well then. Ah. I guess since I know your name, I should tell you mine for starters?" she offered, shuffling her feet. This was so awkward. She was awful in the best of social situations, which were so few and far between as to hardly count, but this? This was a new sort of awkward.

"Um, I'm Tessa. So, yeah. What are you doing out here?"

Luna perked at the question. "Luna is Learning! Mother said Luna must learn about humans and so Luna went on a journey to learn. Fen said to stay away from Connlaoth but Luna came to Learn." The times the wolf girl said learn were many, as the girl loved learning, but to some it might seem odd.

"Fen said Connlaoth was dangerous but it looks like every other place Luna has been to, only fewer men. Lots of women, which is strange. Are all the men in the big stone houses on the border? Luna saw men there, lots of them." The wolf girl knew next to nothing about this particular country, and woe unto the one who started her questions, for they were many and unstopping.

"Um..." Tessa shrugged uncomfortably. "I guess a lot of them are, off soldiering and everything." Which was fine by her, because it meant she knew where to avoid. People made her nervous as the best of times, but men increased that natural anxiety tenfold.

"But it is pretty dangerous, if you go around as a wolf like that! Most farmers kill wolves on sight." She didn't add that she had also killed wolves in defense of her sheep; that didn't seem like an appropriate topic for discussion, all things considered.

Luna took the knowledge with a nod, absorbing it like a sponge or cloth absorbed water. At the mention of slaying wolves she flinched but not overly much.

"Only lone or injured wolves attack sheep and cows, there is no honor in taking the animals of men." The wolf girl stood and stretched. "Luna will not take the animals of men if it isn't cooked by a human."


((its a bit crappy but my head is throbbing right now and I just want to push through the posts I owe))

Tessa opened her mouth and closed it, then tilted her head in confusion. "Wait, but...you mean..." She rested a hand on her hip and frowned. "Weren't you planning on attacking my sheep just then?"

Luna stiffened. "Luna is hungry, and Luna is alone. Luna has no pack to hunt with. But Luna would not have attacked the sheeps, Luna was thinking about roast lamb chops and mutton..." The wolf girl seemed to droop. "Luna has not eaten in many days."

She started counting with her fingers and held up seven fingers. "This many times the sun has risen since Luna last ate..." The words were emphasized by the gurgling in her stomach.

"Seven days?" Tessa blurted, eyes growing large as she stared at the wolf. She blinked several times. "But...you can turn into a wolf. Can't you hunt?"

Not that the answer mattered; it was probably self explanatory. If she could hunt, she would have eaten, right? Shaking her head, Tessa turned to her travel bag and pulled out a length of cord. Even she knew how to at least trap animals, and she had Fable to hunt, as well.

"Very well. If I'm to stay here for the night, I need to set up some snares anyway. If you don't know how to hunt, I can at least show you that much."

Luna looked up. "Luna can hunt, but it is harder without a pack. The rabbits always run faster." In truth the young wolf girl had attempted to hunt several times, but each time she had met the failure that was not being fast enough or not being able to corner her prey.

She stood to follow. "Luna will watch, Luna will learn."

Tessa smiled at the girl's eagerness. Clearly, her initial judgment of her had been wrong; she seemed willing to learn, and honestly seemed to want to do the right thing. She was just, well...just sort of like a child, even if she didn't look it. She could work with that--and besides, the company was kind of nice.

"Well, you don't even need to just watch. In fact, you can  help," she said, and pointed to a line of trees.

"Can you go collect some sticks for me, please? Make sure they're dry and sturdy!"

Luna smiled. "Yes, Luna will find sticks." The wolf girl trotted off her to the edge of the forest. She found a dozen sticks about as thick as two of her fingers and were dry. Trotting back she held out the sticks, each was about a long as her forearm, a little over a foot. "Will these work?"

Luna stood waiting and bounced a bit from foot to foot, always eager to learn, but not good at standing still, one of the reasons she was a failure as a hunter.

When the girl returned, Tessa took the sticks from her with a smile. "These will do nicely, thank you. Okay! Now, the next step is we need to find a rabbit burrow, one that's in use and not abandoned. Do you know how to find those?"

It seemed a good idea to let the girl take an active role in learning this, because from the looks of it, she sure had a lot of pent up energy.

And the more she kept her busy and distracted, the safer Tessa felt about her sheep.
