Luna paused. Finding rabbit dens was easy enough, since her nose, even while in human form, was a hundred times better than a real human's nose. She found a burrow with scent that was only an hour or two old, and found two more where the scent was only a day old.

"Will these do?"

Tessa followed along after her, and found the girl was pretty quick and sharp for her childlike simplicity. She nodded at her question and knelt so she could check the freshness of the tracks and dung for herself.

"These are perfect," she said, and held out her hand for the sticks. "With any luck, we'll catch us a meal in no time. Now, come here and watch closely. I'll show you how to make a basic snare, okay? Pay attention!"

And with that said, she went through the motions of constructing a crude snare, taking it slow so Luna could observe the steps. She showed her how to create the lead line and the trigger, and how to build the noose so it would tighten fast and effectively.

When she was finished, she brushed off her hands and stood. "Not so hard, huh?"

Luna watched intently, not missing a single detail of the process. Though she was innocent and simple at times, she was a fast learner and a keen student when focused on what was being taught. She moved to another of the dens and slowly put a snare in place. When it was done it was done properly, if a bit roughly, the noose was a little too small, and the lead line a little too long, but it would work.

"Luna thinks she understands now." The wolf girl marveled at the simplicity of the snare, if wolves had thumbs she would teach this to other lone wolves. It was something she could show Fen later on as well.

Tessa was quite surprised when the girl took initiative and made a snare herself. Staring for a few moments, she broke out into a smile when she was done and moved over to inspect Luna's handiwork for herself.

"Wow, not bad," she said, squatting down to get a closer look. "Hmm. You'll wanna make this bigger next time, and this line a little shorter, but that's not bad at all for a first try. It should work, too. You should be able to catch something. Well, then!"

She rose to her feet and arched her back to pop it. "Now all that's left is patience. We'll go away for a while, and check it in a couple hours. You don't want to stick around because it'll spook them, but you don't want to wait too long in case you catch something, because that's just cruel."

Luna smiled at the appraisal of her work. She stood gracefully and brushed the front of her skirt free of debris. She nodded when told to stay away for a few hours.

"Rabbits scare easy, Luna knows this. And a snare can catch more than rabbits, sometimes wolves or foxes will get stuck in one while hunting for hares in places with human hunters." The wolf girl followed the shepherdess, her face strangely serious from her usual simple minded innocence.

Tessa nodded at her words. "Yes, that happens, too," she said, remembering an unfortunate time when she'd snared a fox. It was probably best to change the subject, come to think of it.

She lead the way from the burrows and back to her flock, where Fable roamed outside the herd, ever vigilant. "In the meantime, while we wait for a proper meal, I'll get us something to tide us over."

From her traveling pack she pulled out a heel of bread, which she split and handed one end to Luna. Then she brought out another small item wrapped in greasy paper. When she unfolded it, she revealed a wheel of sheep's cheese.

She handed a small chunk of it to Luna as well. "This will take the edge off, at least."

Luna took the bread with a smile, although she was ravenously hungry she carefully pulled the bread into pieces. The cheese she only nibbled, being unused to rich foods like cheeses and creams. Finishing the two items slowly and with an almost painful care she looked up and smiled fully.

"This cheese is nice. One day Luna should find out how cheese is made, just so that she can make her own." The wolf girl nodded solemnly. "You are a kind person, Fen said most Connlaothians would kill Luna as soon as look at her, because Luna is full of magic."

Tessa smiled around a bite of bread and cheese. "It was made from my sheep," she said. Though she unfortunately didn't have the resources to make it herself, but she was given a little of what was made from her flock.

She was taking another bite of food when Lune made her next statement.

She choked, and had to pound on her chest before she could breathe again. "C-come again?"

Luna tilted her head to the side, confused for a moment. "Luna is a Forest Spirit, Forest Spirits are made of magic compressed into a physical form. We are made from the condensed magic of life that is found in forests, streams and other natural things. Luna is made from the magic that is found the cold forests of the north."

Tessa went pale and clapped a hand to Luna's mouth.

"No, no, no! You mustn't talk about that!" she said, voice hushed and urgent. "To anyone! Not even to me, because if people overhear..." She grimaced at the thought. "And you mustn't use it! Ever. Okay? If you do and anyone finds out, they'll kill you."

Taking a deep, she sat back again and pointed to the embroidered mark on her shirt. "You have to get one of these. It's the law."

Luna tilted her head, confused for a moment. "Magic exists in everything, why would anyone find it bad? Without magic there would be no life, as magic is what makes crops grow and gives a newborn baby its firsts breath." Luna paused for a moment taking into consideration the symbol that Tessa wore. It took only a breath of a moment for the wolf girl's clothing to change, for the symbol to appear over her right breast.

"Luna should probably leave before too long then, if the humans of Connlaoth find magic bad, it would be very bad for them to try and kill Luna, Mother would come for vengeance, so would Fen, and he already hates the humans of Connlaoth."

Tessa flinched back when the symbol appeared on the girl's clothing, with magic, of course! For a moment, she could have laughed in a combination of fear and exasperation.

"It...it kind of defeats the purpose if you use magic to put the symbol there," she mumbled, and looked around as though expecting guards and Mordecai to come bursting into their modest camp, even though there wasn't a soul around for miles. Shoulders hunched, she kept her voice low, just in case.

"And it's not magic that does those things. That's Ansgar. Magic is bad, it corrupts and kills. Some of us are born with it, like me, and it's not fair, but some people are born with no fingers or bad hearts, and some people aren't born at all but die at birth. But Ansgar gives us those challenges to test us, so that we might overcome them and be stronger for it."

Luna tilted her head at the mention of Ansgar. She's heard Fen say the name a few times, mostly while cursing, but he'd never explained it to her. To the wolf girl Ansgar sounded like some kind of Spirit or God, at least in the eyes of Tessa and the rest of Connlaoth.

"All things have magic but somethings have more, Ansgar sounds like a powerful Spirit but Luna has only heard him as a Bad Word when Fen hurts himself." The wolf girl paused. "Fen once told Luna that she was lucky for being able to know her mother. Fen sometimes gets sad when he talks about Mother." The wolf girl was trying to change the subject, growing uncomfortable with the current one.

Tessa was glad for the subject change, as well--the topic of magic made her uncomfortable and she didn't want to think of the curse that was inside of her--but the new topic wasn't much better.

She shifted uncomfortably, rubbing her arms. "That's true," she agreed. "You are very lucky. Childbirth can be very dangerous."

Luna looked up. "Fen's mother and father were killed because of Fen's magic. Fen is from Connlaoth." the wolf girl grew quiet, trying to find a topic that wouldn't make her stomach squirm like it was full of worms.


(really crappy post but am dog sitting and the dogs require constant supervision)

Indeed, this subject was getting way too uncomfortable, and the talk of magic was making Tessa tense and jumpy. Popping a piece of bread into her mouth to give her time to chew and stall, she swallowed and made the best attempt at a subject change she could.

"Ah! That's some bread!" she said with a bright smile, not noticing that she was rolling the piece of bread she still held into a little doughy ball. "It's very delicious, isn't it? A kind baker gave it to me."

Luna nodded, happy to not talk about magic, which seemed a very bad subject. Noting how jumpy Tessa seemed Luna focused on her senses, there was only the smell of sheep, human and dog in the area. There were not heartbeats that seemed suspicious, nor were there any people in sight. Trusting her senses she felt a strange release of tension, without knowing it, the wolf girl had picked up the nervous energy and begun to feel tense herself.

"The bread is very good, better than the bread Fen makes."

She sure talked about this "Fen" a lot, and it piqued Tessa's interest. Popping the bread ball in her mouth, Tessa swallowed before she spoke.

"Who's 'Fen'?"

Luna blinked a few times before answering. "Fen is a friend, he has strong magic that heals almost any wound and he makes swords and other things from metal. He saved Luna and teaches her many things. He is strong and kind and brave. He hates to see innocent people get hurt and will put himself in harms way for a complete stranger. He is the perfect pack leader, if he were a wolf his song would be known to all four-legged Hunters."

Tessa held up a hand. "May I make a request, please?" she asked, fidgeting where she sat and glancing around them nervously. "Can you please not mention...you know..." She lowered her voice. "Magic around me? Please? Fen sounds very nice, but that makes me very, ah, uncomfortable."
