Tessa flinched back when the symbol appeared on the girl's clothing, with magic, of course! For a moment, she could have laughed in a combination of fear and exasperation.
"It...it kind of defeats the purpose if you use magic to put the symbol there," she mumbled, and looked around as though expecting guards and Mordecai to come bursting into their modest camp, even though there wasn't a soul around for miles. Shoulders hunched, she kept her voice low, just in case.
"And it's not magic that does those things. That's Ansgar. Magic is bad, it corrupts and kills. Some of us are born with it, like me, and it's not fair, but some people are born with no fingers or bad hearts, and some people aren't born at all but die at birth. But Ansgar gives us those challenges to test us, so that we might overcome them and be stronger for it."
