TheHighwayman

It was a small village, the name of which Thriv couldn't quite recall. However, the place did see enough traffic to make an inn a worthwhile investment, and thus Thriv hadn't had to sleep in some farmer's loft quite yet. Not that he'd have really minded, but he got the feeling he was going to miss having a soft bed every night long before the end of his travels. It was a dim morning, the sun only just now shedding enough light to see by, and only a few of the villagers were yet up and about their business. Thriv, however, was eager to get started. Throwing on his chainmail armor and ordering a quick bite to eat downstairs before leaving, the would-be knight was ready to go.

All things considered, Thriv was in a great mood. His flight from home had gone off without a hitch, he'd had some time to think on his prospects and had come away largely optimistic (as was his wont), he'd just filled his stomach, and he'd even won his first fight the previous night! Granted, it was only a bar fight, and he'd only won because he'd stood in a corner and flailed with his eyes closed until all the more competent brawlers had smashed each other into unconsciousness, but it was still a victory, right? He did kind of feel bad for the other brawlers though- he hoped they'd not been battered too badly... Though he supposed one or two of the drunkards had deserved it. Ah well.

Stepping out of the inn that had provided a bed for the first night of his travels, Thriv ran a hand through his somewhat messy hair and took a deep breath... and his good mood promptly evaporated. On the morning of his first day as a traveler... someone was trying to steal his horse. Fortunately for Thriv the beast was rather loyal, and thus wasn't budging much, simply sitting there protesting in the road, but that wasn't the point. Someone was trying to steal his horse!

With a shout of "Let go of my horse!" the knight charged forward and threw a punch at the thief's head. It would have been a great right hook, too, aside from two problems... One, he'd once again had his eyes closed, and thus ending up aiming at the air in front of his target. Two, Thriv's foot slipped from under him, and he fell backwards and landed with a thud in the dirt, just glaring upwards...

The sun had only just detached itself from the horizon as Rukh made her way into the village, past the squat, ragged stone walls and into what passed as a central square. The dirt was hard-packed, and wet in places, and there didn't seem to be any market stalls - only a crude frame where one could hobble a horse. If only I'd known of this place last night! she cursed inwardly I could have had a warm room for the night, instead of sleeping in a ditch. Not that I have much money...

The acrobat had been up for around an hour, but still felt half asleep. The thick chain around her waist clanked noisily with every step, and her hips burned with the weight of it, but it was a burden she had borne for so long now that she barely even registered it. Her eyes darted around the hamlet, not seeing much of worth. After a half minute of deliberation, and not wanting to have made a wasted journey, she decided to go into the inn, and at least ask if there had been a performing troupe in town recently.

As she began her purposeful walk, her eye was drawn once more to the crude frame where two horses were tethered. On the one closest to her, the reigns had been decorated with intricate gold stitching. Oh, so pretty!

Distracted, she went to the horse, clasping it in her hand and running her fingers and thumb over the detail. Wide-eyed, and mouth agape, she was lost in the detail, and didn't notice the shout or the heavy footfalls. Only when the owner had collapsed at her feet did she realise that she was not alone. Confused at the heap of chainmail at her feet, she hesitantly spoke.

"Uhm, can I.. help you?"
