Ethereal-Star

On the streets of Adela various people milled about, most of them bearing the dark-skinned complexions common to Adelan citizens. However one of them stood out in the crowd. With his off-white pale skin and yellow hair and a strange kind of aura surrounding him, Citrine was definitely not of Adelan blood. Heck, he wasn't even human.

Amber eyes gazed about as he strolled the cobbled walkways of the streets about him, having recently returned from the local tavern and getting a much needed drink. Citrine had definitely needed it as finding work nowadays seemed to be more difficult than usual. Two jobs had already been taken and ones in which he gladly would have jumped at the chance. One in which to serve as a personal bodyguard to some nobleman's daughter, and the other was to help find and exterminate a small nest of goblins that had settled in a cave a few miles west of here. Both jobs Citrine had sourly found out had already been fulfilled, the proper coin already having traded hands. When he inquired about it, he was told there was no more need of further help.

And so with a look of annoyance and growing desperation, he headed off to The Belching Ogre tavern to get a strong drink of spirits. Two drinks later and only feeling a little buzzed, he waited for the sensation to pass before moving onward. Now, as he passed by yet another tavern, The Full Belly Inn, he noticed something of interest. A poster tacked to the side of the building, attached to the wood with a rusty nail. It read the following.

"Looking for work?
Look no further!
Guards and laborers needed in Essyrn.
Contact Lady Cynthia Arun for more information."

An address was listed underneath that last line and Citrine committed it to memory. Looked like a promising deal to him. He had to check this out. He wondered what kind of person this Cynthia Arun was and what exactly the guard job would entail. He supposed he would find out soon enough.

But the day was waning and so he had to call it a night. Going back to his small shack in the Merchant District, he decided that he would gather whatever supplies he needed and travel to Essyrn tomorrow. Then from there, he could determine the nature of this job. Citrine hoped it would be a worthwhile endeavor, but he was running out of options so he had to take what he could get. Food had been a bit scarce for him and his grain supply was lessening with each passing day as the amount of coin he had was depleting. So whatever the job was, he would take it. The Murkling just hoped it didn't involve anything unsavory. The description didn't sound like anything of the sort, but one never knew these days.

Entering his home, Citrine closed the door and spent the rest of the evening by the fireplace as well as doing pullups on the bars in his exercise corner. Pretty soon, he retired for the night on his thin mattress topped with a wool blanket and fell asleep after about half an hour. The night was quiet with little sound to be heard from outside. Citrine dreamed of his home plane then, as he often did. Soon enough, a new day dawned and he was off.

Nightmare

Lady Cynthia Arun's estate was quite something to behold. At the very front of the estate there is a magnificent golden gate keeping others out. There is always one guard posted here to keep people out, as well as to accept invited visitors. There are trees that grow all the way along this gate blocking the view into her estate from the outside. A single sandstone road goes through the gate and down into the center of the estate. To the right of the road is a large garden that spans from the gate to the manor with a wall of trees along the outside, blocking the view into the estate from that side as well. This garden is filled with beautiful flowers and natural growing bushes, as well as trees throughout it. Small mammals, reptiles like snakes and lizards, as well as birds make their homes in this garden. It is well kept enough to make it look presentable, though mostly allowed to grow freely.

On the other side of the road there is a manmade river, though it looks quite natural and beautiful. It's around this river that there are many herbs, vegetables and fruits grown to be used in medicines and meals, as well as sold. This makes up the entire other side of the estate up to the manor. There is a manmade waterfall and pool of water just out front of the manor itself.

Directly in front of the manor there is a large, exquisite fountain. The sandstone road leads down to this fountain and makes a circle around it. It was here that Lady Cynthia Arun was waiting. She was supposed to be getting a large shipment of expensive magical artifacts today and it was supposed to arrive an hour ago. She didn't take kindly to being kept waiting.

Another half hour passed before the shipment finally arrived. There was a whole caravan with multiple wagons bringing in the artifacts. She had five of her strongest male slaves out her to carry the artifacts into the building. It wasn't long after they started unloading the wagons that the man in charge of the caravan approached Cynthia. "That'll be one hundred thousand gold pieces, my lady."

Cynthia motioned one of her slaves over. He was carrying a large, heavy chest made out of cedar. He placed the chest on the ground in front of Cynthia and opened it. The chest was full of gold pieces, though she had taken ten thousand out. "You shall only be receiving ninety thousand since you are late. I trust that's not a problem?"

The man's face showed that he was furious but he had transported things for Cynthia before. He knew there was no use in arguing. He also knew what could happen to you if you provoked her and made her lose her temper. "Of course, my lady. I'll be sure to be on time next time."

The last artifact was unloaded from the wagons and the caravan left. The sun was still bright in the sky, so Cynthia decided she would relax outside. She headed over to the pool of water near the front of her manor and removed her armor before getting into the cool water.

((Fixed a mistake in my previous post. Please note said change.))

Bright and early, Citrine got up and gathered everything he would need for his trip. A couple blankets, some food rations of nuts and hardtack, as well as a few other necessities. He didn't want to have to backtrack to his home even though it wouldn't take much effort for him to do so anyway since he could simply teleport wherever he wanted to, provided there were accurate shadowy areas about. After positioning Legacy, his halberd on his back, Citrine was all ready to go. Finding a suitable pool of shadows in one corner of the room, he stepped into them and willed his body to transport to the nearest appropriate area near to where he was going.

Soon enough, the Murkling appeared underneath a tree which cast a more than adequate enough pool of shadow for him. Immediately he could feel the temperature difference, though he did not sweat, as that was not something his kind did. Murklings after all, were mostly comprised of light, though they were not actually spirits in that sense of the word. Their bodies were flesh and blood like any other, just they emitted a sort of soft light, as the other part of them was composed of darkness, although a smaller amount thereof. In the near distance was a really large estate that would make any noble or commoner wish for the luxuries it no doubt provided within. And according to the address he had memorized, that was his destination.

It didn't take long to walk there as soon Citrine reached the large golden gate that protected the manor. A line of trees mostly obscured his view from what lay behind it, but not completely. A guard at the gate was stationed there and so the mercenary went up to him. "I am here to seek out a guard job for a Miss Cynthia Arun." Citrine spoke calmly, his words both amiable and business-like.
