Aki rolled his eyes. What, now the pup wanted to argue semantics? The kid had to be the strangest wolf he'd ever met. At least, strangest one in a long time. "Oh yeah? Then what do you call this? All these people all in one place together, milling about aimlessly, grazing around the marketplace? It looks like a herd to me, but if you know a better word, oh Wise White Wolf, then do share."

Once in the alley, Aki wasted no time in shifting, the change smooth and almost instantaneous. One second a human was standing there, and the next a wriggling pile of clothes was on the ground. Aki grunted as he tried to disentangle himself from the heap, his back legs all caught up in the breeches and his head still through the shirt, but after some maneuvering he managed to kick off the breeches and work the shirt off his head with his paws.

"Ah, does it feel good to be out of those," he said, shaking out his coat before trotting over to stand beside the smaller Snowy. It would feel even better to get a good run in, cause a little ruckus and watch everything go to hell in a hand-basket. His ears flattened as he peered around the alley. Snowy sure looked eager, and that was enough for him.

"Remember what you have to do. It'll be crazy, but don't lose focus, whatever you do. Now, on my mark...GO!"

Because count-downs were for creatures that actually knew how to count.

Aki tore out of the alley and, barking and snarling something fierce if he said so himself, he charged at full speed straight for that man and his rabbits. People shrieked in surprise and fear and leaped out of the way, no one wanting to get caught in the path of a huge black wolf on the warpath, but he also heard men shouting angrily and knew there'd be reinforcements soon.

Not soon enough.

The rabbit-merchant had sense enough to dive out of the way just before Aki leaped up and slammed into the cage, knocking it off its table. It crashed to the ground and the door burst open from the impact--

...And the rabbits stayed huddled inside, backed against the rear of the cage and wide-eyed with fear.

Well, shit.

"Snowy! Hurry up!" Some of those men had come, brandishing sticks and meaner looking weapons and Aki bounded out of the way as some of those were shook at him. He snarled and snapped his jaws and did his best to hold those ones at bay, the fur standing up all along his back and drool dripping from his lips as he tried to make himself look not only fierce, but also rabid.

Too bad he hadn't figured out that whole foaming technique.

A powerful urge to laugh welled up in Snowy.  Watching Aki try to wiggle out of his human clothes had to be the highlight of the day so far.  "Take your time," he said, delighted, wagging his tail as he watched the other wolf struggle free.

"Won't you need those when you change back?  You're not just going leave them—go? Oh go!  Right!"

Snowy burst out into the street, a little slow on the mark, and was far too busy avoiding the panicking crowd to worry about looking vicious.  They scattered everywhere.  A couple of them nearly fell on him and only luck and some quick reflexes got him to the rabbits in time to duck his head into the cage and snap one up.  Then he stood there, rabbit hanging in his jaws, staring at Aki and the now growing crowd of men. Men who were not panicking and held a variety of weapons.  "What now?!"

"RUN, you dumbass!" Aki snapped, slamming his shoulder into a table and sending it, and all the delicate wares on it, crashing to the ground in a mess of broken glass and pottery that would hopefully provide a good distraction. "Head toward the--oh, hells, never mind! You're useless!"

So much for the plan. Why did he even bother?

Snarling and snapping at the people closing in around him, he dodged through the chaos until he could reach Snowy, bumping shoulders with him to get his attention.

"Stop staring and follow!" he ordered, and bolted, heading for the first opening he saw that was farthest from the armed men. As he broke out of the crowd and ran for the street, he saw out of the corner of his eye that a couple had those...twangy things, with the arrows, bows! and gave a silent curse. That could be trouble, once they were out in the open.

Snowy did his best to run, but every time he bolted in a direction he found it blocked by people running every which way, or a merchant waving a shovel at him, or an unexpected cart in his path.  He ended up darting in circles until Aki shoulder up beside him.

"Where, where? Is this part of the plan?" He ran after Aki, keeping up with him fairly well even with the rabbit hindering him.  He followed Aki's glance behind and cringed inside.  Archers...

They ran past a stall loaded with a magic worker's fire bottles, the kind that exploded into bright flowers of color.  Instead of running around it, he ran through it, knocking all the bottles to the ground and bursting them.  They boomed and cracked behind them, spraying colored light everywhere.  It wouldn't stop the archers for long, but if they could put enough distance between maybe it would keep them from getting feathered!

"It is now," Aki snapped, if a mental voice could be snappish. "It wouldn't have been if you hadn't decided to stand there staring like a fool and--fuck!"

Snowy knocked over some bottles and they exploded, popping and cracking and ringing loudly through Aki's sensitive ears. The wolf jumped in surprise at the sound, letting out a startled snarl and feeling a deep, instinctual jolt of fear--those lights looked like fire!--but he didn't slow. If anything, he ran faster.

Effective, but damn. They were lucky those lights didn't singe something.

And he had to admit, that had been a pretty good move on Snowy's part. Point for him. Aki wouldn't have thought of that--didn't even know what those bottles were--but, of course, he didn't plan on letting his new pack-mate know that.

"Head straight ahead for that street, Aki said, pouring on the speed, claws clicking on the ground. "I came in through there. It leads out of the city and--oh, balls, why am I telling you this? Just stay close."

With a disgruntled sound, he put on an extra burst of speed and pulled ahead of Snowy, turning onto the street. Not much farther, provided Snowy didn't do something extra stupid.

Snowy spun around not once but twice to get a look at the fire show and the streaking spears of light that burst forth like flowers of multicolored flame.  Gorgeous!  If he weren't fleeing for his life just then he's appreciate it even more.  It did as he'd hoped—the sound of arrows thunking down around them ceased as the archers had no clear shot.

"What do you mean by that?  Wait, not so fast!"  He wasn't near as fleet as Aki.  Perhaps if he'd been well fed, but diminished as he was Aki pulled ahead easily and he was left to chase after.

Just as well.  The streets narrowed and he had enough trouble dodging through them with the dead weight of the rabbit in his mouth.

"Better be faster," Aki only replied, but thankfully there wasn't far to go. Ahead was one of the city entrances, and only a few guards stood watch--none of them archers. Racing ahead, Aki slipped past them before they even took notice and dashed out off of the road and into the cover of the field, where he stopped to wait for Snowy.

If he fell into trouble, he supposed he'd go and help him out.

He was laboring by the time he reached the archway, but fortunately most of the guardsmen had turned to watch Aki run by and Snowy was able to dodge around them with ease.  Aki had pulled far ahead, but thankfully he stopped.

"That was so thrilling," he said, and even his mindvoice sounded strained.  He dropped the rabbit and panted, sides heaving.

Aki, on the other hand, hardly looked winded at all. He was panting from the run, but he could have kept going for miles, and for a few seconds he just watched Snowy labor, amusement in his eyes. How that mutt had managed to survive to adulthood was beyond him--but a lot of things about the wolf didn't really make sense, anyway. There was something going on with him and he was curious enough to want to find out what that was.

Was the wolf feigning ignorance and playing him? The thought had occurred to him briefly, but he'd dismissed it. Nah. The obliviousness was too genuine and what did he have to gain? It had to be something else. Probably nothing important, but he was a wolf and worth keeping around, at least.

"You didn't do half bad, for a mutt," Aki said. "Pretty ballsy, Snowball. Congrats on your kill. And now..."

Aki casually plucked the rabbit up in his jaws and took off through the grass at a trot. "Thanks for the meal!"

Snowy flopped down.  He had not run so fast for such a distance in a long while, possibly not ever, and it didn't help that he was malnourished.  He just needed a moment to catch his breath.

"Thanks—'ey!"  Aki was leaving with his rabbit!  And now he'd have to get up and run some more, ugh.  It took him a few seconds to work up the resolve to get back to his feet and pad after Aki.  "Where you going with that?"

"Oh, I dunno. Haven't decided yet! I roam where I please," Aki answered, deliberately avoiding the real question. But really, his true goal was away from the city. They were still too close. He didn't think anyone would bother coming after them, not with the mess they'd left behind to distract everyone, and they were just two random wolves. Didn't seem worth pursuing, but who knows? Someone might.

"What about you, Snowy? What were you planning on doing with yourself after you'd got your fill of trash?"

"That's not what I meant!"  He dearly hoped Aki wasn't making off with that meal.  He was fairly certain he wouldn't be able to do one damned thing about it if he was.  Aki was faster and Snowy was not well.  No way could he catch him if he decided he didn't want to be caught.

"I didn't think that far ahead."  He ran on, able to keep up just enough speed to hold Aki in sight.

"Well, then, looks like you have no choice but to stick with me," Aki answered, leading the way toward a small clump of trees that grew along a narrow stream. He splashed through the stream and to the other side and only stopped once they were in the shade, shaking the water from his fur and dropping the dead rabbit to the ground.

"Oh, dear. I forgot my clothes again," he said, sighing. That always happened. "Guess what our next mission will be?"

"I'm trying to stick with you!  Slow down!"  Snowy followed along across a little stream and into the shelter of a copse.  He collapsed on the ground, but looked behind them and pricked his ears up.  The whole time they were running, he'd felt those guards might give chase any moment.

"It better be eating," he said.

Aki seemed to consider that for a moment, eyes slightly narrowed and head cocked, and then just gave his thick fur a shake.

"Well. Your next mission after eating," he amended, placing a paw on the rabbit, clamping his jaws around a leg, and ripping the limb free in one hard yank. He flicked it to Snowy. "Cheers!"

"After eating," he agreed.  Thank all the gods Aki was being cooperative.  After all that, all Snowy wanted was food.

He set in on the rabbit leg.  "Go get you a dress to wear?"

Aki lifted his head and gave Snowy a puzzled look, muzzle wet with rabbit blood.

"A dress? Oh, no." He tore off another chunk of meat. "Only the females wear those."

As he had learned early on. He still didn't get the point but likened it to birds, only reversed--the females were the flamboyant ones. Usually.

Snowy sighed through his nose.  It was always so sad when no one got your jokes.  A human man would have taken laughable offense to his words.

"Your next mission is learning how to be a wolf," Aki answered, "instead of this...mongrel you've been acting like. It's disgusting."

He finished off his portion of rabbit and left the rest to Snowy, taking a seat across from him and licking a paw lazily. "So far, you've proven you're not completely useless, though I'm afraid you'll probably never aspire to much. But that's okay. Everyone has their place and purpose. Making everyone else look good is an honorable position."

"Oh, doesn't that sound fun."  his voice dripped enough sarcasm to drown in.

Snowy took his precious, sweet time in picking off the meat and choice bits just so.  The longer he took here, the longer it would be before they had to go running off again.

"What would be this...this muchness that I should be aspiring for?"  Was there more beyond getting enough to eat every day?
