She panted a little as she walked slowly in the direction she had hoped she started off originally. Her ears flattened against her head a little as she tried to figure out a way to know how long she had been wandering. This was what she got for deciding to chase after a rabbit. Normally she could resist the urge to chase such a small little animal at least a little bit but not in this form she couldn't. Her Haunt form made her dog instincts kick in completely and there is never much she could do but go with them. Having to go on such a whim like that at times would get her in trouble or hurt. This time at least it only made her tired because she had no idea how long she had been chasing the furry thing.

Well on top of that she was dripping wet because the rabbit had decided to take a sudden turn after seeing the edge to a small pond. Unfortunately..she had not until it was too late. She ended up taking an unexpected swim. 'I hate this so much..' Since she was unable to talk in her Haunt form she was reduced to just thinking her thoughts and giving small dog like whimpers every now and then. Pausing for a moment, she shook a bit, trying to dry off her black fur a bit more. After doing that she sat down for a moment and glanced around, her different colored orbs taking everything in.

Nothing looked familiar. Then again she hadn't taken the time to memorize every tree and blade of grass. That was just no fun. There was no distinct smell that would tell her which way she had been before either. 'No fun...no fun at all..'After another moment's rest she got back on her feet...paws...and started off again. Just sitting there wasn't going to get her anywhere. Not like wandering around clueless would either but it was better than just sitting and waiting. 'At least I remembered to eat before this happened...though I am kind of thirsty...' Anyone would be after the running she did...even a Haunt who didn't need much water. Then again she was weaker than the normal type of haunt.

She blinked and quickly sniffed the air though when the smell of something burning took her from her thoughts. 'Wood...burning wood....burning wood usually means fire...fire usually means...people! Yes!' Her tail wagged happily at the thought of being able to find people. She didn't look too menacing in this form so they would take care of her...right? At least long enough for her to listen in on their conversations and figure out which way led out of the forest. If she didn't get that information she'd have to leave them before nightfall anyway. Who would want to wake up the next morning and find a girl laying were a dog had been the night before.

Shaking the thought from her head she bounded off in the direction of the smell. She didn't look in any other direction because if some small woodland animal decided to cross her path she knew she'd want to chase it and that would just get her back right where she started.

'So close...almost there..' A snap quickly caught her attention and her ears perked up suddenly. That wasn't a good snap either. Shortly after the sound though intense pain quickly shot up her right back leg, causing her to yelp out loudly. 'Ow! What in the?!' She tried to move but that only caused the pain to worsen, making her yelp again before whimpering. It seemed she was stuck to that spot anyway..even with moving. Katina glanced back at her back leg, staring at the now bleeding limb. Something had caught it. Something sharp and something she wouldn't be able to get herself out of. 'Lovely...a trap....ha ha...great...'

She carefully laid down, doing her best not to move her back leg. It still hurt even if she didn't move it though so it wasn't like it mattered too much. Her ears flattened against her head as she rested it on the ground, whimpering pitifully. 'Maybe...someone heard...maybe...I hope...I wonder...how close was I to them? Close enough for them to hear? I hope so...I can't afford to lose too much blood...it'll cause problems later tonight.' She whimpered once again, letting her thoughts trail to what could happen if the person who laid this trap came to check on it if they were still around. '...That...wouldn't be pleasant...oh no...maybe...maybe that fire...oh no...if the people...or person there laid this trap...I'm going to be dinner!' Katina howled out before whimpering again. 'I don't want to be dinner!!'

The last few months had been rather harsh on poor Spell. Never had a bodyguard job lived up to the dangerous expectation, and he was quite content with that fact. More often than not with his line of work he found himself escorting nobles from cities to other such cities where they'd squawk about things he had no interest in to others of their social standing. It was all politics really. However, the job he was heading back from left him tattered and down right- well he could have made the comparison that he was beaten down to the bone; he sure looked like some poor creature that had more than enough runs through the ringer. He was tired, and wanted nothing more than to reach the town he had been calling home for years; La'marri. Unfortunately for him, the road he was walking on, so to speak as in reality there was no road but a faded pathway winding through many ferns and stumps and fallen down trees in Niahi Woods, but it had yet to end either way, and he would certainly not reach it by the time the sun went down. How irritating. Every part of him itched for rest, a long, long rest. He deserved it after that wild goose chase which sent him half way around Le'raana with his client. It was more than enough to make any man wish for a soft bed to sleep in. But for tonight, the forest floor would be his comfort and companion.

When at last Spell had come to a clearing in the woods, a sparse occurrence he figured considering how dense the forest was, he was lucky to come across it. The remnants of a fire laid in the middle; laying abandoned and forgotten by the people who had once used it to keep warm, and light their spirits on a weary journey. Going away, or coming home? He wondered. Not that it mattered, as long as he could find a safe place to set up camp, he did not care where it was. And from the look of it, as he stooped down to inspect the charred remains of wood, who ever had been there would not be coming back anytime soon. At least, he hoped. Considering what he recently went through, and all that bad luck he wouldn't be surprised if in the middle of the night he found a knife to his throat. That is, if he woke up at all.

He could barely see through the canopy of the trees to the sky, but knew from the coldness in the air and the way the forest grew darker; the shadows stretching from the trees, growing until they covered everything. He knew to take precautions when traveling, however, shivers always ran down his spine at the sight of bleakness. What lurked beyond the bushes, the ferns? What stepped upon the twigs, which of them cracked, and which did not? What could stare at him, if not an owl's eyes? He found it unsettling, no matter how many times he walked this trail alone. He was not the bravest man in the world. Honestly, he was far from it.

Spell sighed, weary of the day's walking, and slipped off the bag strapped to his shoulders only to place it gently on the ground beside him. His cloak, made with a tan coloured material looking heavy and edged around the sides with pure white fur; a garment meant to keep a person warm, and not concealed, still laid draped over his shoulders, and tied at the front, with the hood up and over his head. He reached
up to grab and pull down the hood, allowing his long rabbit-like ears to breathe. How suffocating it felt to have them tucked under a heavy cloak, being as sensitive as they were. Caution always led him to hide them, he would much rather have people think he was human than not one. Strangers that is, he could never be too careful with those.

His eyes were as bad as his hearing was good, shown clearly by Ku'kulan crafted spectacles on his face, designed specifically for a Jeqeun because of the lack of convenient human ears. He could already hear the crickets starting to chirp in the foliage. A peaceful sound, he mused. It reminded him of a home long lost to him, and something in the bottom of his soul began to stir. But, he sighed and shook his head, getting ready to set up camp. Those thoughts were of no use now.

It did not take him long to get a fire roaring. With a little help from the magic he possessed he started the flame in newly gathered pieces of broken wood. He placed his hands near it, feeling the warmth tingling across his cold fingers. A smile played on his lips as the reflection of the fire danced in his eyes. He sat on the blanket he carried with him inside the bag, much more comfortable than the very ground itself. Spell rested, his long ears laying low on his head, ready to twitch at the first odd sound. And unfortunately, the first odd sound came sooner than he would have liked.

He tensed, his body going ridged at a loud yelp coming from the depths of the forest. No, not the depths, but only a little ways from him if his ears heard correctly. He held his breath, his ears standing straight up, visibly shaking as seen from the dangling earrings they were decorated with. He reached under his cloak and to his belt, where a short dagger laid in a sheath, and pulled it out. A pitiful howl rose to the air, laced with pain. Spell stood armed and waited. There was a long pause before his ears caught the sound of another howl, although from what he guessed, from the same animal, or it was just exceedingly similar to the last one. He hesitated, and remembered to breathe.

It was not in his best interest to wander into the brush to search for the noise, but he heard no other sounds, no other growls, no other indication that there could be others with the beast. It was alone, and more than likely hurt. He knew the sound, and he was sure no one, even a non-Jeqeun could mistake it. Spell pushed his way past the ferns, past the branches that were daring to hit him in the face, his ears following whimpers. He clutched hard at the handle of the dagger in his hand, which had grown sweaty. What was driving him to it? He was a sap, a horrible, horrible sap, and a hero-wannabe, at least that was his reasoning. He could not find it in himself to admit he had compassion for those in pain, whether it be person or beast.  He could not see well in the dark, if it were not for his hearing he would have passed right on by the wolf..or was it a dog? He could not tell either way, the creature's fur was as black as anything, concealing itself into the night. He paused, standing off to the side, with his dagger pointing right at it for his own protection. There was an irony smell in the air. Blood, there was no mistake.

Even though she was lying on the ground, her ears were perked up straight after all of the noise she had made. If she was going to be dinner she would at least like to know when someone was coming...if they had heard her that was. If they hadn't she knew she was still going to stay on alert just because of fear of what could happen. That would probably mean she was going to have a sleepless night if someone never came. That thought wasn't very pleasing for her. Even though she didn't normally sleep at night it wasn't like she'd be able to do too much with the situation she was in. On top of that blood loss would probably eventually drive her to sleep even if she didn't want to. Either way...any kind of sleep, willing or induced, would be a restless, light sleep. One that would cause her to wake at even the slightest sound of leaves rustling in the trees.

Her different colored orbs, that stood out the most in the darkness, bright compared to her dark fur, glanced around quickly. No sound yet. Just the crickets. They had settled so nothing was moving around them. Maybe someone really hadn't heard her. Maybe there wasn't anyone there. Had she caught the smell of a fire left behind...or well the remains of a fire? 'Wouldn't be the first time I found a day old trail...how....unfortunate..' What sounded like a sigh escaped her as she slowly let herself relax a little. Only a little. She was too fearful to let herself relax too much. She couldn't risk letting herself get too comfortable and then missing a sound or something that would indicate someone was coming.

She took a wary glance back at her leg to see how it was. There were still tingles of pain but after such a short period of time she really couldn't feel much of it anymore. She was wondering if her leg was still there. Actually...had it only been a short period of time or longer? When you have nothing to do sometimes time passed quickly. Well...if you had nothing to do and were slowly laying on the ground bleeding. Now that was when time really decided to fly by. Well...her leg was still there and it was still bleeding. Even in the darkness she could see the blood slowly pooling around her leg and the trap. 'It's funny how much blood one can lose from such a simple type of wound...well...actually...is it really that simple? Hm...' Katina closed her eyes in thought for a second before turning her head up towards the sky. Or well...where the sky would be if the treetops weren't so close together.

It was a new moon anyway though so all she would be able to look forward to would be looking up at the star filled, moonless night sky. The stars were nice but she would much rather be able to see the light of the moonlight, even if it was just a little bit. The moonlight would mean she would be in her normal form instead of this damned one. She would've been able to free herself from this trap and tended to what damage was inflicted and move on even if it would be at a slower pace than normal. It would've been better than having to lie on the ground in a helpless dog form. Of course she didn't have that type of luck and all she could look to for company was the sounds of the crickets and the birds or other animals rustling in the treetops. No stars. No moon. No sky. Just trees, darkness and normal night time sounds.

She started to wonder what she had done to induce such bad karma...or was it bad luck? The difference really didn't matter to her at the moment. It was all the same thing to her. Either way she hadn't done anything too bad that would cause her to have such horrible luck right now. So maybe she accidentally killed a rabbit or two the last new moon. That wasn't that bad. It wasn't like she meant to. It wasn't like she wanted to. Forgetting to eat caused such horrible things when she changed and when she realized what she had done it was too late anyway. Now that she thought about it the only time she ever really ate was right before the new moon. 'I guess I have one normal trait...pfft...what a great one to have though when I forget to do it half of the time...'

Katina put one of her paws over her head as the thoughts fluttered around in her mind for a bit longer. 'Guh...boredom...that's why I'm thinking about these things. Why can't there be something close to give me at least a little bit of entertainment. A bug...something..' At that thought she immediately started to looked around in the blades of grass, moving her nose around in them to stir up any bugs hiding in them. As long as they were in reach she could play with them with her paw or something to keep herself from going insane. Sadly...there were none. 'Of course...add to my luck..they want to be as far away as possibly.'

Then there was a noise. A sudden noise that a normal person probably wouldn't have been able to hear. Along with that came the smell of sweat that, if she were in her human form and had the very heightened sense of smell, would have made her gag. Even in this form she stuck out her tongue in disgust at the smell of it. That was when something clicked. A small noise and then the smell of sweat. People sweat. Someone was coming. 'Oh no! Dinner! Don't want! Don't want!!' Quickly, without thinking about it, she tried to move only to cause her back paw to move which once again caused pain to shoot through her body. Even though she had become numb to the tingles that happened after just laying there she couldn't ignore the pain from moving her leg. She yelped out before looking back at the trap, growling some. 'Stupid..stupid thing!!'

Katina flopped down again then, whimpering some at her futile attempt. That was when she realized the person who had been coming towards her was there. Careless...she had been careless in her attempt to get away and she had forgotten to listen. She had let them get this close and it was a surprise to her that they didn't kill her in her moment of carelessness. She could see them, not moving. Why were they hesitating? Maybe they didn't see her? 'Wouldn't surprise me...I practically blend in to this gloomy surrounding.' Then her thoughts traveled away again. Maybe they were just scared and didn't want to hurt her or have her for dinner? Her happy thought failed to let her see that the person was pointing something at her.

Quickly she tried to think of a way to let them know that she wouldn't hurt them or anything. She crossed her paws a little and rested her head on them, whimpering slightly as she looked up at them pitifully. She hadn't having to look like that but her current predicament was pitiful to her. The only other movement she made was her tail started wagging a little in another attempt to show that she was friendly. Honestly...she looked about as deadly as a leaf that way. Despite that she wasn't going to make any sudden noises other than her slight whimpers and she wasn't going to make any movements either. Even if she had to sit there for what would seem for hours just staring at the person.

Its eyes were something he had not seen in any animal before. Even when they, him and the beast, were shrouded in the night blanketing the woods, those eyes peered out of the darkness. A cast of blue  and red. Such a thing could not be normal he knew, a thought that made him grip more steadily on the dagger in his hand. This was the creature who had made such a noise; a noise that could startle him, and make him wander carelessly out to see for himself. That was not the most intelligent action for him to have taken, now he was in a predicament he did not know how to handle. The beast was laying there, not making any move to strike or even growl at his presence. Did it even notice him? He had no way of knowing, he could not read minds, nor did he ever give any indication that he wanted such ability. It would be far too noisy after all. But, he could not see well in the dark, all he could see were those eyes staring at him, making him feel far too uneasy than he would have liked. What were the thoughts behind them? He heard light whimpers, and saw movement in the dark. He took a step backwards, twigs crunching under his boots, and cursed under his breath. He was in for it now, at least, that was what he thought until he noticed it was nothing but the beast's wagging tail. Spell sighed. How silly of him to be frightened by an animal who made no move to harm him, nor by his guessing from the smell of blood, could.

Laughing, he sheathed the dagger to his side again then promptly kneeled down beside the animal. The hard ground pressed into his legs, he could feel the coldness going though his clothing. He placed a hand near its nose so that it could get a whiff of him before scratching behind one of its ears. Up close, it did not seem as threatening, even those eyes now said it was as harmless as a leaf. Yet in the back of his mind he hoped that leaf was not carnivorous. But Spell decided he wouldn't hurt it, he had no need to, plus from what he could gather it already had been through more than it needed.

"If only you could tell me where it hurts it would be a lot easier to help you." He smiled gently at it, more or less trying to give off the impression that he would not do it anymore harm, and he was only there to aid it, and perhaps if he could, ease its suffering. Which was difficult to do in his case, as he was talking to a dog, and dogs can't understand Common. Well, probably not his Common as his words were heavily laced with a Ku'kulun accent which did not seem to fade no matter how long he was away from his motherland. Thankfully, most could not name it.

For now, only the sense of touch could help him. He ran a hand over the dog's black fur. Soft black fur, he noted. If it was injured, he would be able to feel the wound somewhere on its body. His hand moved down one of its legs and stopped. Ah, there it was. A sleek wetness touched his fingers, and the smell was unmistakable. Blood. Its leg was caught. His hand when further down, and touched along the contraption which burrowed its teeth into the dog's leg. A rather poorly made trap, probably worked on by an amateur blacksmith. The worst kind, they were finicky if not made correctly. More than once he had come across such things in his travels, and he found knowledge about it to be more than useful. If ever he got himself caught in one, he would know how to at least get out of it without having to cut off part of his leg. Very useful indeed.  At least the small ones he could handle, but he was good as dead for others. Luckily, this one fell into the former category.

"This will hurt." He did not lie, more than likely the beast would prefer having the trap suck on its leg than off of it. The air would get at the wound, making it sting, and making it ache. But, he continued on, using his dagger to try and pry open the teeth. If he could find the sweet spot then it would be much easier. If it was light out it would be much easier as well. This could be dangerous, he could hurt himself and the animal more if he slipped up. He could get the animal free, and then catch his hand in the contraption. There was no saving it then. He paused and took a breather. All these thoughts were making him needlessly anxious. He did not care for it. Swallowing hard, he took to it again, and got lucky. He found a notch; an imperfection in the teeth, and slipped his dagger into it far enough so that he could pry the rest open with his hands and all his strength.

She continued to remain still, well everything but her tail anyway, and just stared up at the person. Of course she had no idea what effect her different colored eyes were having on them at the moment though. There were no movements from the person or anything that would indicate if she was making them uncomfortable or something. Though if it did she wouldn't be surprised at all. It was often the reaction she got even in her human form sometimes. Even with so many races she hadn't come across many people who had two different colored eyes. When she did come across those people though even she felt slightly uncomfortable. It was just another reason she wasn't too happy of what she was. Though..if she was given the option she wouldn't change anything. Even if she didn't like what she was, it was who she was and she could accept that..mostly.

Her ears perked up automatically though when the person caused a few twigs to snap. She could see in the dark so she could tell they were backing away suddenly. But why? What had she done to frighten them? Maybe they saw something else. But if that were so she would've hurt that something coming or at least smelt it. One of the two. Her tail stopped wagging immediately then because the thought of being left there again passed through her head. After all if the person left she doubted they'd come back and she wasn't sure if there was anyone else around. Even if they were they probably would be smarter than this person and would stay within the safe confines of their campsite. That was a common sense type of thing to do though.

Katina gave the person the best 'what are you laughing at' type of look that a dog could give someone when they suddenly laughed. Surely they couldn't be laughing at her. Well..they could be but why would they? They were one trying to run away from a hurt and defenseless dog. A dog that had made it clear no harm would be done if they drew closer or something. Well maybe it would have been clearer if it were day time. Of course when the person moved back forwards again and kneeled down beside her, her tail started to wag happily again. So she wasn't going to be left alone. That made her extremely happy.

When one of the person's sweaty hands was placed near her nose, she swallowed down a gag. 'You need a bath...' This person was so lucky that she couldn't talk because she would definitely have told them to go take a bath or something because sweat was not the most pleasant smell to her poor sensitive nose. Her eyes closed happily as her ear was scratched soon after that, taking her from her thoughts of the person needing a bath. With the person this close, before she had closed her eyes, she could make out their features a bit more. Even though she could see in the dark, she hadn't really focused on their features. It seemed to be a man. Human? No..not human. He didn't smell like a human. She opened her eyes and looked up at the person again, staring at what was now more apparent to her. This man had ears. Not cat ears..or dog ears. No..they had rabbit ears. Her tail started to wag more. 'Rabbit rabbit rabbit rabbit rabbit rabbbbbittttt~!!!'

His words took her from her thoughts though. He had a weird accent that made it sort of hard for her to make out most of what he was saying. She probably would've been able to make out more of what he was saying if she was completely listening to him. Even if he had taken her from her thoughts, a part of her mind was still stuck on the one word. He was a rabbit and her urge to chase him was there but she managed to suppress it. It wasn't like she could chase him though if she wanted to since she was stuck. Even if she wasn't she wouldn't chase him since he was the one that was trying to help her..or so she thought from what she had heard of his words.

Her tail stopped wagging some as he ran his down her fur, towards her back leg. An involuntary growl escaped and of course a reaction like that was to be expected from a dog. Actually that type of reaction was expected from anyone. If you tried to touch a spot that hurt the person would make some noise of pain and pull away. Animals just happened to work differently. They'd growl or something as a warning for the person to be careful and not hurt them anymore. As long as he didn't hurt her anymore she wouldn't accidentally snap at him. When his hand passed over the injured area without causing anymore paint, she relaxed a bit and whimpered some, quite possibly in apology for growling at him before.

Katina watched him as he studied the trap her leg was stuck in. Did he know how to remove it? Boy she hoped so. Being stuck for what felt like forever was starting to make her grumpy. She didn't like being stuck in one spot for long periods of time. She got bored and it practically drove her insane. 'Obviously its going to hurt...just get it off...' Oh she wished he were able to hear her because she really REALLY wanted this damned thing off. As he started to fiddle with the trap though, using a dagger, she stiffened up. Yes now she realized he was carrying a weapon with him. 'So he does have common sense..' Oh yes...she was getting very grumpy and very testy. Of course that attitude was normal in her Haunt form. Despite that she tried to keep herself from moving around or anything so that she wouldn't cause his task to be even more difficult.

Of course when he managed to find an open area to wedge the dagger it, she was happy because that meant he could try and remove the trap further right? As he started to do said action, her tail wagged a little but she kept it out of his way so that it wouldn't distract him. Once the trap was pried open enough for her to get her leg out, she did so even though it caused her immediate pain. Katina moved her leg away from the trap but was digging her front claws into the dirt because of the pain it caused. She slowly got up, though she pulled her injured leg up away from the ground and whimpered slightly because even doing that hurt. The new feeling of not having the teeth in the wound was different and the air was indeed causing it to sting. 'Ow ow ow ow ow....' Katina glanced back at the man, wondering if he'd be able to let go of the trap then without causing himself harm.
