"Really, Aunt Millicent, if you please, I have had enough discussion on this matter." The young woman gave a sigh of disgust. "And I'm far too old for you to simply brush me aside to wither away and rot in boredom and dust in the study. Really, I think I've read nearly every book by now..." She stared idly at her manicured nails and sighed.
"Well, there wouldn't be any dust in it if you wouldn't keep scaring the maids away," her aunt said in retort.
Victoria lifted her eyes.
"Really? And I wouldn't have to become so rude, except you leave me to itch in the confines of this house and dress."
Her aunt shot her a look.
"Mind your tongue, Victoria. You are a lady." She took to her tea with an angered sip. "You need to tone down your arrogance you know. You are becoming almost too old to marry without question. It's salacious at best. And honestly.."
"Honestly, what?" Victoria barked, though barked in most politeness as she set down her tea. "Can a woman not make herself useful? There aren't many of our kind to begin with and-"
"And I've heard enough of those remarks, Victoria," her aunt told her harshly.
Victoria lowered her gaze.
"But if you'd just understand,"s he began, staring at her tea. "I just wish to be useful."
Aunt Millicent sighed.
"In due time, in due time."
"I believe I've followed you enough on your own errands to know what is expected of me."
"That's not the point." her aunt replied, taking another irritated sip of her tea.
"Than what is expected of me?" Victoria said, slamming hand down towards her table. "I am going to be twenty five this year. Twenty five, dear aunt, that's an age far younger than when you were allowed in the field and you are not wed.."
"I chose the life of a celibate," her aunt retorted, giving the tea another angered sip.
"Perhaps only in fear of having a daughter such as you.." she shook her head. "But never you mind, Victoria. It's time to go."
"The meeting.."
"Yes," her aunt reminded. "They have an idle claim, one I've ignored for a time, but I hardly see it as proper justifications to waste my times, chasing off some werewolf from a set patch of ruins."
"Werewolf?" Victoria's interests perked up.
"Yes, a were wolf." her aunt gave a sigh, setting down her cup of tea. "I know that look, young lady, and dont' you get any ideas."
Victoria's lips sagged as she leaned her head back in a sigh.
"You know me too well, Aunt."
"Indeed."
Once tea was had, the two women left the house in carriage, the horses pulling them towards the normal meeting location of choice- a stone building, though not immensely grand, it had a bit of a humbled charm to it where a few, selected super natural beings met with the Negotiator's from time to time- the Negatiator's being the only beings that seemed to keep the peace between those with cursed abilities, and those without. In more recent years, things had evolved into a more civil request when plans were drawn out; but history had once dictated Victoria's kind as super-natural killers. After all, how much easier was it to kill a vampire once your enchantments turned him into a mere mortal man?
But the meeting went on...
and on and on...
boring as usual as Victoria gave a tired sigh...
That was.. until the conversation turned towards the werewolf.
"Werewolf?"
"Yes, it seems he's claimed himself a small patch of land-"
But her Aunt interrupted.
"Please, if I might interject, and do not find me rude, but this seems something hardly to trifle with when our numbers are so few.."
but then the men at the meeting turned their heads towards Victoria. And she found herself open to blink.
"What about your niece?"
"What about my niece," her aunt asked defensively.
"Is she not, well, beyond her own age to start dabbling into some of these, er, negotiations?"
Her aunt went stiff, especially when she heard her niece rise out from her chair.
"Why!" Victoria began with such a cry of admiration. "I am tickled the conversation has finally led my way. My aunt, though I love her dearly, has made it quite clear she fears for my safety, and also may fear my inadequacies-"
"Victoria, please," her aunt tried to interject, but Victoria threw up her hand.
"Let me, speak, please, for you've humbled me well over the years. At least let me solicit my case." she sighed at her aunt's glare, but continued. "You see, I've studied well under my aunt's these past several years of my life, for well, most of my life, and even with the parents before then, although it brief, and it pains me to remain locked away, unable to lift a finger to help."
"Well, young lady, your aunt does bring up a pressing case in the matter."
"And what is that case?" VIctoria asked the old man.
"That your kind is few and far between. She is merely looking out for your well being.."
"And yet, she feels this matter you discuss is less trifling."
"Well, yes but-"
"Well, yes, but what?" Victoria stopped him, looking from one man to another. "Don't you all see this as the golden opportunity that I do? That it can allow me to stretch my wings, and I dare say, in an albeit, more calm and safe environment, while my aunt can attend to other business as well. I find my suggestion most efficient, do you not? And also, most useful of my time."
She sat back down, muttering. "Really.. I've had much too many books to read.."
The group all looked to one another, grumbling and discussing the course of measure-
and it was only then that her Aunt suddenly gave to rise.
"This is enough!"
the room went silent. They all stared at Millicent, curiously.
"We need not discuss my niece as some piece of meat,"s he rolled her hand in a huff. "Perhaps I can allow her, just this one time, to prove her merit."
Victoria's eyes sparkled at the idea as she rose- but her aunt thrust a hand towards her and gave her a stern gaze.
"But do not consider this without consequence, my dear, Victoria. This is only a small mission and I do not think it wise if you go it alone."
"But is that not the purpose-"
"Silence, Victoria, Silence." her aunt commanded. "I still have the floor." she added in a bit of a huff. Victoria frowned. "Now, at this time, we will disband and return home, and consider your escort but in the mean time.."s he flashed the other men in the hall a trying glare. "We shall discuss this at another time."
"As you wish, my lady. The meeting is adjourned."
As the two stepped outside, Victoria couldn't help but grow quiet, then caught her aunt by the wrist before the two proceeded into their carriage.
"Thank you, Milli.."
Her aunt turned towards her, almost a mocking sneer, but it was just the way she looked- just arrogant in the eyes and nose. As did Vicky.
"For at least giving me a chance." Victoria said with a smile.
Her aunt, tsked once, and then they were off- heading back towards their home.....
