Hi all,
I'm very new to the whole forum RPG thing - I've always wanted to play D&D but never really had the chance. I'm an English teacher and like to think I can write so this seems like a happy medium :)
Any tips, tricks or tidbits you might like to share to get me up to speed would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to SotE! In terms of tips, I think the best I can give you is to take initiative- talk to people, ask for plots, so on. Remember to make a wants and limits page (and read the limits of the people you thread with)- it will help you find people with similar writing styles.

Mostly I'd say much the same thing Eckhart did- make a character, make your wants and limits, and start looking for plot! If you have any questions though don't hesitate to ask, this community is super friendly and helpful ^.^
