Every so often, it happened. Some adventurous young pony wandered off from the herd in the night and Sita found himself taking a long detour to track it down. No sense in waking his partner; this was only a one-person job so he left him behind to sleep and watch the herd, because they had a hard day ahead of them.

It was fortunate that he'd had trouble sleeping that night and so had woken up early, roughly an hour before dawn. In an effort to tire himself out and catch a few blessed minutes more of sleep, he'd busied himself with a head count--and it was a good thing he had. If he was lucky, he could find it and bring it home within the hour and they wouldn't lose any time.

He'd lose sleep, but it wouldn't be the first time.

Nudging his gelding into a trot, it wasn't long before he discovered a trail leading away from the herd and toward the shoreline, so with a sigh he followed. He wasn't sure why the hell it would have wandered there, stupid horse, but many of these horses were from the coastlands and maybe it needed some salt--or a roll to escape the insects. There were a lot of mosquitoes here, marshlands spreading out beyond the shore, and not many horses could resist the allure of nice, scratchy sand.

Sure enough, he found the young mare on her back in the sand, rolling side to side and grunting happily. It would have been cute if he wasn't running on just a few hours of sleep.

Readying his lasso, Sita slowed his gelding to a walk so as not to spook her. "Alright, ya little fool. Ya had your fun," he grumbled--and slapped his neck, smashing a mosquito that was growing fat on his blood.

Fuck. He couldn't wait to get out of here and back to the plains.

Her time was nearing its end for hunting. The tides were shifting in the ocean, becoming lower, exposing hunting grounds to the battering winds and the lightening sky. She could feel herself getting tired, even if her muscles were used to traversing the water for days on end, but each flick of her tail was slow, labored. The currents were pushing against her as she plunged through the shallow waters, urging her to go back, retreat, deeper into the comforting waves.

As much as she wanted to obey, to give in to rest when the dawn was so close to approaching, she couldn't. Tonight had proved to be a fruitless hunt, which in her case was not good at all. It would be a full moon tomorrow, and she needed the extra calories to survive that horrific night.

She had hoped that by straying farther from the settlements on the Yoreiq Isles, the fishing would have been better, not scared away by all the flopping and frantic seizures of the humans attempting to hunt. But apparently that was not the case. Even drifting for hours in the darkened waters had yielded nothing, just the last silver scatterings of a bait ball that other sharks had rounded and preyed upon. The fish left were broken, with barely enough meat left on their ribs to compensate for the effort of eating them. By Neptune did she miss the days of yore! The days where her and the other mers would scour the oceans, thrusting with their tridents to take down the great beasties-- the sea dragons, the squid, great predators of the ocean that fed for days on end, that made her adrenaline race and her heart roar in her ears.

And now here she was. A wash-up. An exile, an outcast. Punished for a crime that she could never seek repentance for.

The shadows of the waves above cast rippling patterns on the blue-gray of her tail, swimming in easy strokes, the crescent of her fin slicing the water easily. Thin lips were set in a small frown as her stark black eyes still scanned the ocean before her, searching for a sign of prey. She kept her trident loose in her grip, the webbing between her fingers stretched thin over the gray stone and bluish-green algae that clung to her weapon. Her white locks were plastered against the sides of her face, hastily chopped, rough and by her own hand. The chainmail that she wore around her chest had seen better days; spots of rust were appearing on the edges, no matter how often she tried to scape them off. At least she had armor, even if it was nothing compared to what she had before... oh, the chest plates and shoulder guards. How you missed something that was taken so easily for granted.

Icy winds bit at her dorsal fin as Sekhet breached the surface, seeing the sand banks of the beach sloping upwards in the waters. She was close to the shoreline. Not an ideal place for someone like her. Her gills fluttered as she sighed, and Sekhet closed her eyes, ready to turn back. She didn't want to have to be any closer to the shore than was an absolute necessary... at least until tomorrow.

Splashing. The sound made Sekhet turn, sinking underneath the waves as she caught watery images playing on the surface. A creature, fairly large in size, with hard nails that it stood upon. It took Sekhet a minute to realize what she was staring at-- a horse.

A horse! Her lips split into a demonic grin as rows and rows of sharp teeth glinted in the coming light. Graceful on land, but slow and stupid in the water. Oh, perhaps she did catch a lucky break after all!

Sekhet raised her trident, tightening her grip, as she drew closer to the sounds of the mare frolicking in the waves, causing ripples that reverberated in her rib cage. She could almost taste the blood, the sweet flesh... The meal was ultimately too big and would attract the attention of predators for miles around, but if she ate fast... yes.

She waited, and then with a powerful sweep of her tail, Sekhet charged through the water, slicing through the liquid and cutting the surface as she lunged, arm outstretched as she thrust with her trident at the creature. A snarl tore from her throat as she felt the tines sink into the yielding flesh, the delicate ankle bones of the creature snapping as it gave a cry of pain.

Another burst of speed, muscles rippling along her tail as Sekhet beached, extending her jaws until they clicked apart, and then she launched from an incoming wave, hands outstretched as claws gleamed, but nothing was worse than her teeth. Her unhinged jaws sank into the horse's throat, slicing through the jugular vein and letting hot blood spill into her mouth as the creature thrashed, but every movement tore fur and muscle away from bone.

Sekhet twisted her head, bringing the horse down on its side, and began to drag her prey back into the ocean, one hand on its front leg as she pulled back into the waves, her other using her trident to stick into the soft sands and pull back, taking this horse as her own.

She wouldn't go hungry tonight.

The young mare had noticed him, and she rolled to her feet and gave a playful buck before trotting off away from him until her hooves splashed in the waves. Playing hard to get, it seemed. This one had been a rebellious, independent one, difficult to break and still not quite broken. Tired as he was, Sita bit back the irritation, found that calm, patient place he always went when dealing with animals, and approached her from the side.

"That's it, lovely. That's it. Let's getcha back home."

He was close enough to easily slip the loop of the lasso around her neck when it happened.

The mare gave a scream of agony as something burst from the water and his own gelding whinnied in fear and reared, nearly throwing him from its back. It all happened too fast to react--or maybe that was because his heart had jammed itself into his throat until he could hardly breathe, or because there wasn't much he could do when he was scrambling to control his own frightened steed. His gelding danced in a nervous circle as he cursed and struggled to rein him in, but getting a horse to stay in a place where one of their kin was being devoured went against every natural instinct it possessed. By the time he got it turned around, its eyes rolling in its head and body shuddering beneath him...

If Sita had eaten recently, he probably would have lost it, his stomach lurching sickeningly.

Blood stained the sand, turning the sea foam a frothy pink, and some monster--some demon of the sea, no doubt--had its jaws on his lifeless mare, dragging her into the ocean. The creature could have almost passed for human if it weren't for everything else about it. Every instinct inside Sita screamed for him to get the fuck out of there because the mare was lost to him and he didn't need to risk himself or his gelding; he captured, broke, trained, and cared for horses, that's it, and while he'd dealt with his share of trouble, he was not equipped for this. But as the horror of the scene sank in, and as fear crept into anger...well, fuck instinct and good sense.

"You demon whore!" he yelled and, spurring his horse forward, took careful aim and tossed the lasso, aiming for her head.

Among his people, horses were sacred. This act would not go unpunished.

Food! By Neptune's great trident was she lucky this dawn! And something big and slow as well! Sekhet cackled as she continued to drag the corpse back onto the surf, blood caking her face and the sweet substance trickled down her throat. Even if the sharks came to claim this corpse and force her away from it, just a few chunks from his morsel would give her the calories that she desperately needed.

But something was up. She saw another horse prancing in a frenzied circle, eyes bulging as it watched the corpse of its friend dragged into the surf. But... the horse... had a rider. Sekhet snarled in fury as she saw the boy staring at the corpse. Damn humans! No matter where she went one was always bound to turn up!

She couldn't waste her time fighting this one. Let him cry over his dumb mare. She needed food, and that was his problem that he let his horse go free. She tried to turn in the surf, her tail lashing furiously and breaking the surface as she attempted to unbeach herself.

But it all went wrong. Something seized around Sekhet's throat, words muffled by the water from the man, and she was being pulled, dragged, away from her kill, away from her home...

Not this time.

Sekhet let out a scream that could raise the dead, the fury of a mermaid who had trained for combat. Her black eyes pierced through the surface, and within a few swift movements, she had the middle tine of her trident wrapped in the flimsy rope that was pulling her. She let go of the corpse, gripped her trident, and with all of her strength, she pulled back.

She wasn't about to lose this fight.

Sita realized too late that he did not think that one through.

The creature yanked back with more force than he expected and he gave a startled yelp as it nearly pulled him right out of the saddle. Acting fast, Sita dug his heels in and hung on, muscles straining and palms burning as a few lengths of rope slipped through his hands. Shiiit! It became very clear very fast that he'd miscalculated the creature's strength--because it looked female. Old biases ran foolishly deep and anger clouded his judgment. Still, he'd made his choice and he hadn't gotten through life by rolling over. He'd cast the line, so now he had to see it through.

Hey, he'd never once claimed to be smart.

His gelding whinnied in fear and tossed its head, blowing air out of its nostrils and prancing fearfully, but Sita spoke to it in his mother tongue, having trained his own horse to respond only to his native language. Hopefully it would actually listen--but Sita wasn't so sure. While it was trained to work with distractions and while it was quite used to rounding up wild horses, it was not used to facing predators head on! He pulled back hard against the creature and focused his mind, tried to think of it as some rowdy stallion and not a horse-killer, grit his teeth, and braced himself for the long haul.

Either that creature would tire first or he would; he could only hope the rope was choking it.

Her mind was working quickly as she saw the man wasn't pulled from his horse. He had better balance than Sekhet would have figured, and the horse, while still frightened out of its wits, wasn't going anywhere either. Her jaws clicked as they unhinged again, loose, waiting to bite and tear into the nearest pound of flesh.

But he was yanking on the rope, its fibers digging into her throat. At least it was above her gills, but the constriction was still making it harder to breathe, and her belly scraping sand was a bad sign overall. Her trident was still wrapped in the rope, and she had to get this damn thing off her if she had any chance of winning this battle.

She pulled back as he tried to pull her forward, but she also began sawing with her trident, slowly cutting the rope away from herself, even as the fibers peeled away from her skin. She snarled and fought, and even rolled in the water, straining the rope further.

She wasn't losing again. Not this time.

Sweat beaded on Sita's brow and his muscles strained as he fought to keep his grip, focused and determined--but his gelding, on the other hand, could only take so much stimulation. Roping a wild horse was one thing, it was used to that, trained to work with that; roping an angry, powerful shark thing, with the scent of blood and death thick and dizzying in the air, was another entirely.

His horse had had enough; instinct was stronger than loyalty.

As the creature snarled and rolled, jerking Sita forward again and pulling the rope taut and quivering, his horse let out another whinnying scream and bucked violently at just the right moment. There wasn't enough time to react, wasn't enough time to correct his stance or regain his balance. Fuck, he didn't even have time to curse before he was thrown from the saddle to tumble to the sand below, landing with a thud that knocked the wind from his lungs and thanking the gods that his foot didn't catch in the stirrup. With another scream of terror, his gelding took off without him, kicking up sand in its wake.

Gasping for air, it took him a stunned moment to remember that he was now at the wrong end of the rope and far too close to the water and that horse-murdering fish bitch.

Gods damn! This man was stronger than Sekhet was anticipating! And she wasn't fully in the water yet! Her tail still trashed in the sea foam, her stomach and arms scraping in sand, and it wasn't a position that she wanted. The scent of blood and the taste of it still on her tongue spurred her on, and she managed to cast one glance at her meal. When she did, a cry tore from her throat. The surf! It was taking it!

When she looked back at the man and the horse, her glare was furious. She needed that meal, and no pathetic human was going to stand in her way!

But something happened that tipped the odds in her favor. The horse, terrorized by the corpse of its fellow and the stench, had bucked its rider off, leaving the man on two flimsy feet, still holding the rope around her neck.

Sekhet gripped the rope tightly with one hand, her claws burrowing into the rope, trying to rip the fibers to shreds. But rather than struggling, she stayed where she was, gripped her trident, and then thrust forward, trying to stab the tines straight into the man, if her reach was long enough. She didn't have the time to measure distances when she was still being dragged ashore.

With his horse gone and him in the sand, he knew he'd lost his advantage. While he'd done his share of brawling and had the scars to remember them by, won some and lost some, he was only human--and he was quite aware of his own weaknesses and had a healthy respect for anything larger and wilder than him.

Like deranged, nine-foot-long horse-murdering shark people that were now intent on murdering him. Not that he hadn't been an instigator or anything.

"Shit!" Sita regained his senses just in time to see the trident coming at him, and he threw himself to the side to narrowly avoid getting skewered. He felt the vibration of the tines sinking into the sand next to him. Way too close. Not waiting for her to pull the trident free, and not bothering to waste time scrambling to his feet or holding onto the rope, he grabbed onto the trident and gave a good yank.

The anger had started to fade, replaced instead by a wave of 'oh shit', but pride kept him hanging on--well, that and he didn't feel good about turning his back and high-tailing it when she had a weapon she could throw and, from the looks of it, freakishly good aim.

She could practically smell the fear that was rolling off the human in waves. Her mouth split into a toothy, demonic grin once again, her jaws unhinging. Yes, let the human fear her! Let him run like a coward! Let him leave her in peace!

She wrapped her arm and tugged on the rope again, but the man was no longer paying it any attention. This made Sekhet pause, and unfortunately, it was the pause that got her in trouble.

Never once did her grip on her trident falter, but she wasn't expecting the human to actually grab it and pull back. Instinct took Sekhet over, that and training, and rather than letting go, she gripped harder, and screeched as Sita pulled her from the water.

Sekhet began to thrash on the land, and tried to rip the trident out from his grip. She had to get back to the water, or else! Her tail slapped the sand and sent it spraying, her whole body twisting as she continued to yank on her trident, the gills on her neck fluttering wildly.

This was not a good situation.
