Why, thought Martha Wilson as she thundered through the hallway of the dragon-riders' barracks, why, why had she accepted that invitation to dinner with her mother? The Lady Wilson had made it quite clear on numerous occasions what she thought of her daughter's nasty, smelly, un-ladylike profession. She should have smelled a rat straight away when the invitation mentioned a 'celebration of her new apprentice'...

It hadn't been that, of course. It had been a seemingly endless five courses making conversation with some old fart who, her mother had whispered to her urgently, was willing to overlook the dragon-riding for the sake of the family. An extended, ghastly, date with someone twenty years older than her. He was only tenuously noble anyway! Her mother was obviously near despair about Martha ever getting married. What a waste of time.

If it weren't for this stupid apprentice thing she wouldn't even have to be in Adela. She could be out in the Thunderblacks, wind in her hair, with Valinor... She missed him already, and they'd only been apart a day. Yes. It was all the fault of that -

Aaargh! Aaargh! Aaargh!

Lost in a bitter reverie Martha had tripped over one of the uneven flagstones. Her toe throbbed and she clenched her jaw. I bet I lose the nail, she thought with a kind of grim satisfaction.

She pulled herself together. She was almost at the council chamber now, where the new kid would be waiting for her. She'd been briefed - it was some kind of scholar who had come into possession of an egg, not the usual choice for a dragon-rider. On any other day this fact would have been interesting to Martha, but now she was just put out, resentful of her suspicion that she had been torn away from the mountains and her beloved Valinor as the token other non-standard entry rider.

She burst through the doorway to find her soon-to-be apprentice already inside. For a moment she wondered what sort of impression she would make on the girl. Gaunt, stiff-backed, dressed in the regulation iron breastplate that was too heavy for use in the field, Martha cut an imposing figure with her regal bearing. Her hair was long, black and curly though already starting to grey and her eyes were large and dark. She gave an austere bow.

"You must be Juhivitjk."

Alherii Juhivitjk

Her rear felt rather numb, having been sat on the cold wooden chair for almost an hour, yet she didn't dare move. The dragon within her egg seemed to quake relentlessly if it detected any movement outside its temporary abode, which Alherii had concluded was because it could feel her presence around. She could feel it was ready to meet her, she, Alherii who it was joined to by a conscience that was merely in its embryonic form, it was as impatient as she was anxious. The more it moved, the more she feared the outcome of all the shaking, for she wasn't ready to face the creature yet, not before her instructor arrived. Somehow, Alherii had the honour of training under the great Martha Wilson, an esteemed rider who was well written about in recent journals due to not only her impressive skill but also because of her noble background and the story that followed it.

Alherii desperately wanted to learn as much about training with a dragon, rearing it, living with it and forming a bond before her own came to breathe.

'Where is she?' She pined silently within herself 'should I tell her how I encountered the egg?  The young rider was firm in her instruction to let no one learn of its existence. But then again she is a dragon rider herself, so maybe it will be of no ill result'

It felt as though her thoughts were bouncing about the great empty chamber around her, with its cold stone ceilings that reached up for miles, and walls that stretched out around her, for no sooner had she questioned the whereabouts of her Lady Martha did she appear in the entrance way.

She looked so splendid garnished in her iron breast plate. Alherii shot up in attention unintentionally as the young rider strode out across the room towards her. Her ruby egg speckled with gold shards immediately began to pulsate tirelessly in her hands, clawing frantically at Alherii's concentration. Alherii's eyes watched Martha walk towards her; a wildling with posture of kings and hair barely kept but an air of dignity running through her.  Her hands began to stroke the egg in attempt to calm it down, for she didn't want Martha to draw the conclusion that Alherii was incapable of being a Rider for the lack of control she had over her own steed before it had even entered their world, and that too before she had had the opportunity to make her acquaintance with the noble rider.

"Y-yes, that's me" She began as to her horror Martha presented her with a sweeping bow "Oh, no need for all that my lady- I mean, Ma'am, o-or Martha?" She fumbled over her words, the nerves chewing away at any chance of an articulate conversation. "This is my egg." The words just seemed to fall out of her mouth before she had a chance to alter them, and her hands had already stretched themselves out and presented the egg, she couldn't do much bar let the blush that started in her cheeks take hold of her face.

[ooc: It's been a while since I have written, hope that was okay ^_^]

[[ Ooc: Seems pretty good to me - looking forward to roleplaying with you! ^^ ]]

Usually Martha would have been a little kinder to someone so obviously nervous, but now she was in a bad mood and poor Alherii's faltering gave her a stab of annoyance. Her voice, when she spoke again, was sharp with a note of disapproval that she couldn't hide.

"Let's have it then." She reached out and took the egg into her calloused hands. Once out of the elf-girl's calming presence it began to fidget and rock. The wonder of it all began to blow away Martha's temper - truth be told she had never held a dragon's egg before, it was a rare honour. As she held it close to her eyes to inspect it it began to wobble violently, and she swiftly handed it back to Alherii.

"It must be nearly ready to hatch, you did well coming here," she said, with something akin to respect now kindled in her voice. "But tell me, do you wish to become a dragon rider? You are starting late."

Alherii's heart jumped into her mouth when Martha stole the egg from her clasp. A strange sense of anxiety enveloped her as she watched her to be instructor inspect the ever more violently shaking egg. Her nerves only settled when she felt the coolness of the shell pressing between her fingers once more.

"I-I do not feel as though it's a choice ma'am" She began "If the egg chooses to hatch, then I must choose to be its rider. I feel less like it's a decision and more of a gift, but a gift that I do not know how to nurture. There are great words spoken of your delicacy in the matter, so it was evident that I must seek your guidance regarding the matter"

Alherii felt intimidated in this great woman's presence. She could feel the sharp pang of annoyance in her voice when Martha spoke to her, but nevertheless didn't let that break her resilience. Alherii needed her.

She had always had a great hunger to learn, and her curiosity in the life of a rider further pressed her appetite. Whilst a moment's silence filled the emptiness between her and Martha, the great oaken doors swung open, the sound of its heavied movements ringing throughout the vast room and bouncing off the cold stone walls.

A skinny, elderly man stood at its mouth, clad in a grey woollen robe, looking both solemn yet irritated. He spoke softly but the echoes carried his words to the pair and the still vibrating egg.
"Madam Wilson. You were to attend the graduate royal ball this evening. Your absence has caused severe displease to your mother. I ask you to appreciate that this behaviour of yours has yet again embarrassed your family. If you have concluded your assembly here, please grant me the favour of escorting me to the family grounds."

[OOC. Again apologies for such a delayed response. I am just going to write up her character profile too :)]
