Eripiam.

That was the name on the paper. Each letter was made with sure strokes and the period was bold. The upper right corner was missing a chunk and some dust had been smudged into the center left. It was been made of linen for no other kind of material would survive the travel. It had been held by many hands and she had long ago memorized the name.

She fiddled with it now as she stood before the stone structure at the center of the hidden town. This was where a great deal of commotion was happening and the young woman was betting her whole adventure on finding this man here. If she didn't find a man by his description walking through the focal point then she would have to start asking around. It pained her to talk to strangers, but she had long gotten over the anxiety from need. She needed to find this teacher one way or another.

This was the name she had received when she begged for help from those also possessing magic about her. She tired of catching everything on fire instead of lighting a candle. Making a gentle breeze was out of the question. Anything she did jumped out of her control and took off without her. The others found her utter lack of control overwhelming and finally wrote this name on this piece of paper.

While it didn't bother her that they nearly escorted her out the door, she wished that they didn't see her as underfoot. She had worked far too long and far too hard to be at least taken seriously. And-

"I will swat you upside the head if you do it again!" snipped NightRise into her thoughts before Faye could continue.

Trying not to reply back with annoyance, bright amber eyes locked onto a set equal in color and ferocity. The human set had arched eyebrows raised in a silent question as to what she wanted next. The dragon set narrowed in stern determination.

The two legged of the pair huffed as she broke eye contact to push a couple of loose, dark coopered curls out of her face. She set her angular jaw straight and rubbed her button noes before hissing, "I'm just anxious. I'm aloud to be that, am I not?"

"You start to let your thoughts suck you in and before you know it dark memories start to creep. It all plays out across your face, actually. Quiet obvious." chided her companion some more. She could almost handle no more of him today.

"Leave me alone, the opposite couldn't be truer," deflected Faye, "I feel amazing since I've taken my long awaited bath. Ever since I fell in the mud I have been counting the days."

She then decided to satisfy both of them by ignoring him, but focusing on something else like he asked. Her attention was now drawn to the populace that filled the streets and went in and out of the stone archways. They were a lot of humans, yes, be she also saw Faye like creatures -the people that she looked akin enough to garner their kind as her name- all the way to fantastic beasts like NightRise.  They all mingle without any visible friction.

But her eyes were keener on spotting a specific human: a tall man who had blonde hair and emerald eyes. It was a vague description, but everyone would then add at the end: "Oh, you'll know him when you see him".

And, because she had no clue who she was really looking for, there were four men pulled aside by Faye that day. Each one was confused when she asked if they were a man named Eripiam that took in magical students.

As sunset came around, Faye had shadows under her eyes and shivers going through her arms.
The simple cotton shirt with ties at the v neck and sleeves did not keep the wind out well. And the riding pants were light to be flexible, not warm. How Faye wished she didn't wash her thick jacket this morning. She didn't need it cleaned right away.

She leaned against the black dragon and studied the gold dusting throughout them. That's when she felt him vibrate against her. Before she could speak up, Night rise began to jostle her.

"What? What!?" cried Faye in alarm. Perking her head up and into the rays of intense sunlight, Faye struggled to see. While the light caught her head of curls of fire, it caught aflame all the other shiny objects around as well.

"I think I found him!"Exclaimed NightRise as he pointed his tail straight ahead.
Iris started to focus in the direct the tail pointed and soon saw a man in a long rob. That had to be him. What other kind of magical teacher didn't travel about in a ruby color robe with such confidence. Excited, yet very peeved it was her who spotted him, Faye tried to keep her hands steady.

And as she got closer -by the stars!- was that him!? She no longer felt cold as her heart beat raced in anticipation. Wait, she said to herself, this might just be another look alike. Let's not her our hopes up. Taking another breath, she steadied her nerves and made her way across the crowd.

((Sorry, bad habit of making intro posts long. And sorry about the stupid amount of typos, its late ^^; ))

She finally made her way up to the man in the blazing crimson rob. Blonde hair? Check. Tall? Compared to her 5'5"? Yep. No one said he would be so sturdy looking, however. She imagined a frail scholar from all the wisdom he was said to have had commanded. Whatever, she pocked the piece of paper with his name on it and got a bit closer.

From the angle she saw him at; he didn't look much older than she. Now Faye was getting nervous. Was this the right person? Well, she would just be told to shoo if she was wrong. Finally throwing caution to the wind, Faye called out, "Excuses me, sir! May you be Eripiam?"

It had been a long week for Eripiam, and he was itching to get back to his studies.

Having taken a contract to tutor a young noble in Serendipity in mathematics, he had found the lad to be a rather troublesome student. Eri didn't complain; his parents had a heavy purse, and that was all that mattered. It took a lot of hard work and genuine struggle, but within the course of five days the boy was preforming arithmetic with the best of them, and Eri could leave somewhat contented if somewhat annoyed. Not too annoyed, as his coin pouch felt much, much weightier for his troubles.

Thinking of the coin, he patted his pouch with a look of pure contentment as he walked down the beaten dirt road that led to La'marri. His old teacher and friend Cael had tipped him off to a merchant selling artifacts in Zantaric that would likely be of interest to him, as they were reportedly from Fell. Though Cael was skeptical on the bulk of the merchandise the man peddled, there were a small handful of items she believed to be legitimate and even a couple she'd consider noteworthy. He'd hate to be away from his research for even longer, but functional artifacts from Fell were too good to pass up.

He turned the last bend in the road and set his eyes upon La'marri. Even outside of the village, Eri could feel the air practically thrumming with magic, the ebb and flow of various energy wavelengths giving a familiar yet exciting feeling. The hair on his arms stood on end, and he felt a small chill down his spine as he deciphered all of the fey energies, the sheer immensity of power here almost tangible.

Entering the final few hundred feet before the village, Eri nodded to a few familiar faces. A few passerby engaged him in idle chit-chat and business; how was the trip, do you have any open spots for tutoring, could you help me with a device I'm working on, etc. In somewhat of a rush to get home, Eri gave them all short but polite answers and continued on his way, the feeling of magic in the air growing thick and almost making the village seem alive.

Eri grimaced a bit as he swung his arms to stretch his shoulders. He felt flabby. He hadn't gotten any bounty contracts in over a month, and all of this sitting around and teaching was driving him insane. He wanted to fight something. At the same time, he felt a twinge of shame for feeling this way. Not a violent man, fighting nevertheless appealed to Eri in a way that regular studies couldn't. Testing out the field applications of a spell could yield completely different results than in a controlled setting, and there were many new ideas that Eri had yet to try out.

About halfway to his home, Eri was passing through the center of town when he heard a call for his name. Turning towards the voice, he panicked for a moment when he saw a girl with a dragon in tow. Dragons weren't unheard of in La'marri, or even all that uncommon, but dealing with anybody that had a dragon always warranted caution. He stepped back a few paces, and held up his hand to signify for her to stay where she was.

"I am Eripiam, and who might you be? Somebody in need of my services?"

He hoped that it sounded less pretentious to her than it did in his head, Eri mentally smacking himself for his own presumptuousness. Other than that small thought, he didn't take his mind off of the girl or the dragon, reaching out feelers to detect any arcane activity. She seemed around his age, probably a little younger, and her eyes were startling even from a distance. The dragon seemed tame, and so Eri let his guard down somewhat, waiting for the girl's response.

Faye stopped where she had been told to. Screeching to a halt, the young woman held up her hands in front of herself to show she was harmless. She hadn't been expecting to startle such a powerful man. It was when she saw his eyes –wow those were dazzling jade eyes!- flicker to her dragon did she understand. It wasn't so much her, but her in combination to her dragon. For being bonded to a dragon, she sure didn't get out a lot and forgot that not everyone felt the same way about them as she did.

Those big golden eyes went wide with worry as she blathered a bit before actually answering, "I- I – I'm Faye R-Raza! I'm a dragon rider from Adela that is in dire need of you training!"

Lowering her arms, Faye placed a hand on her abdomen while she took a breath to settle herself. This man was a bit intimidating. The dragon rider had held her own plenty of times, but somehow he knocked her off balance. Maybe it was the magic that flickered about his being? Maybe the way he held himself? It didn't matter either way, she needed to talk to him.

Now that he didn't look like he was about to blast a hole into her, Faye came to her center. At least he was listening to her. Brushing another stubborn, wavy lock out of her eyes, Faye continued with an even tone, "I had been sent by other fellow magic users who have had your training before."

NightRise finally picked his way through the throng of beings to sit contently a half step behind his companion. He was a good-sized dragon so the flow of people began going around him like a river avoiding a boulder. The new room let Faye relax a bit more so she could add, "I've got coin and I'm willing to work for training. I won't dawdle and I'll grind my hands to the bone for a chance. Please, I can't control myself anymore and I'm afraid I'm going to kill someone."

She felt bold enough by then to meet his eyes and for a moment held them steadily. She wanted no mistake about how much she needed his help. But, feeling the weight of her burden, hung her head. The curtain of scarlet obscured her face while it was her turn to wait for his reply.

Zack

Eri could tell that he had startled the girl, and felt a pang of guilt as he listened to her stammer out an explanation. Not really interested in teaching somebody right now, his ears perked up at her mention of other magic users who he'd trained, of which there was only a small amount. Eripiam wanted to hear the girl out, but his thoughts kept going back to who she could have talked to. Hm... Cael's around Zantaric, and she'd have taken care of it herself anyways. Gods know where Chase or Caillte could be, maybe one of them...

He was snapped out of his reverie at the mention of coin.

Not a greedy man by any means, purchasing new research material was never cheap, and money was one of the only things she could've mentioned to sway him. Paying acute attention to her words now, he sympathized with her plight to gain control over her powers. He cocked his head to the side, deciding that she was not only willing to pay, but seemed incredibly earnest as well; everything that he looked for in a pupil. Zantaric could wait.

Staying silent a moment, he met her stare and reached out to her with his senses, feeling around her aura with tendrils made from his magic to gauge her ability, all invisible to the naked eye. Though she appeared normal on the outside, dragon riders tended to have better than average abilities, and their symbiotic relationship with the creatures granted some startling powers.

He was able to hone in on her magic's energy wavelength, and adjusted his feelers to detect what stores of power she drew from. It was difficult for Eri to not let his jaw drop when he realized what he was dealing with. Her power was raw and unrefined, that much was obvious, but the sheer amount of magic she could draw from was supernatural. No wonder she couldn't control it; trying to do something like light a candle with a fire spell would be the same as trying to sew with a cannon. If Faye was a dam, than her magic was a flood threatening to not just spill over, but sweep through her and leave nothing in its' wake.

Eri realized he had been standing there not saying anything for a few moments, and felt a little awkward. He broke into a quick smile, "Hey, sorry about that. I was sort of... well, it doesn't matter." Standing up extra straight, he beckoned to her, nodding to her dragon as well. "My home is a little further up, I have books and things of that nature to help, and I have my own personal areas of study that I can instruct you in. There's a stable a little ways away from my house as well, your dragon can lay up there if he would like." Eri stopped for a moment and blinked, his face becoming a blank mask of thought. "Wait, is your dragon a he or a she?" He shook his head, regaining his smile. "Well, in any case, follow me. I'm going to stop at the market first, hopefully Adan's vegetable stall is still open, and make some supper. I hope you like stew."

She had her head hung for quite a bit of time before she peeked up, wondering if he was even still there. He was, to her relief. However, he stood with the most critical eye zeroed in on her. A blush started to creep across her face as she tried figuring out what she should be doing. Should she continue to stand there? Was she supposed to walk away? Was this is a yes? Or a no? Was he sizing her up!?

The vulgar thought quickly brought a brighter shade of red to her cheeks. Her face was almost the color of her eyebrows before she hid her face away behind her hair again. That couldn't be what he's doing. He was probably assessing her magic ability or something around those lines. She had seen people do it before, but didn't know any more about it past they needed staring. . . It still made her ever more conscious of her fitted clothing. How she yearned for her jacket!

Finally his tenor voice came rushing into her ears. When he started and then stopped explaining himself, Faye didn't know still if this was a yes or no. But her answer came soon after when he pulled himself taller –man he could get tall! He practically towered over her at this point!- and nodded in the direction of his home. As he started describing the things he had to help her, Faye just assumed this was a yes in his own form. When he mentioned that he had a stable for NightRise to sleep in, Faye's heart skipped a beat. That was right. She would no longer be sleeping with him. Not that she slept with NightRise back in Adela, but these few weeks he had been her pillow and heater. She had cuddled up to him and he had been an unexpected comfort.

She didn't let it bother her much longer. Fay did miss a proper bed. Eripiam then asked if NightRise was a male or female. Faye clasped her hands in front of her body and replied giddily, "NightRise is a he."
He had taken her in! It would probably take all the money she had been saving for the past two years, but it would be worth it. The smile that consumed her face was subtle, but bursting with happiness. She would no longer catch people or things on fire, knock herself over with wind, create tremors with nightmares, and make the water freeze with sadness. An electric current ran through her veins as she started to follow him down the street. She was still reeling from his aceptance and it hadn't yet sunk in.
"Any hot meal would be a blessing!" beamed Faye before a thought occurred to her, "Will I be now cooking all the meals while I apprentice? Because I can if you have need."

She had never apprenticed for anything beyond her battle training. The young dragon rider assumed this would be about the same. The time she apprentice, Faye cooked, cleaned, shined the metal, and made the beds. So did all the other apprentices. It was interesting to see a bunch of young kids running around doing chores. It was like watching ants go about their business.

The golden orbs dazzled with excitement and relief as she weaved her way in and out of the crowd. Not before too long, they arrived at a stall bursting with vegetables. It stood in a line of stalls with people calling out to the shoppers and peddling their wares. It did her heart good to see that no matter where you went, some things stayed the same. Markets were almost always bustling and colorful; certainly the place to be.

She has completely forgotten about me. .  .That's good."{/i] Thought NightRise as he idly followed. The crowd still went around him, apparently used to giant beasts walking down the street, but he kept his distance. He had no place hovering over her like a worried father.

Zack

"Don't worry yourself about chores," Eri said with a small sigh that was somewhere between acceptance and exasperation. The girl seemed very bubbly despite her seriousness, and though it would take some getting used to it wasn't a bad thing altogether. "I'm sort of a do-it-myself kind of guy. If you want to lend a helping hand here and there, I wouldn't mind, but if you're staying with me I only expect you to take care of yourself." He threw a glance over at her reptilian friend. "Well, and that dragon of yours of course."

Eripiam browsed over the food of the stall with a scrupulous eye as the fellow mage and her dragon companion followed, but found good quality all around and was able to make a selection quite quickly and efficiently. He even stopped at a butcher's stall briefly and grabbed a few cuts of beef and pork, as well as stopping at an apothecary stall and grabbing herbs that would help Faye with her focus and control. After finding all he needed, he beckoned to her once more and headed down the road towards his abode.

It was a little bit of a walk, but eventually they came to Eri's place. It was on a cliff-like precipice overlooking a river, the road winding both up to the doorway of the modest house and down the hill to a beach adjacent to the river. A large stable with entry points for both horses and larger beasts like NightRise was placed around a hundred feet away from the house, and on both sides of the road all the way up to the door was a lush field of green.

Eri mentally checked the wards he had left up around his abode as they approached the end of their short journey, but stopped short of the doorway itself. Above the door was an awning, from which several wind chime-like devices hung. Turning to Faye, he brushed them out of the way in a way that showed utmost caution.

"Be careful of those devices. They're made out of a material I call Prolixus." Eri explained, a look like that of a proud father plastered on his face. "It's a metal of my own invention. I had one of the experienced blacksmiths in town whip me up a combination of iron, gold and platinum, and after exposing it to large amounts of magic it developed unique properties that I'm still in the midst of studying." His expression turned from that of pride to one of worry, his eyes locking with Faye's for a moment. "In all seriousness, all I know of it now is that it's extremely conductive to electric currents, which are waves of energy caused by static discharge, like my lightning spells. Don't touch any of them, they could shoot you full of some of my most potent magic." Walking into the house, he sighed and said more to himself than to her, "My inventiveness seems to stop at weaponizing things, unfortunately."

He turned again for a moment, his eyes flitting back and forth from her to her dragon. "If you'd like, we can eat out here first. There's still some daylight left, and the weather is nice. I'd hate to leave out your scaled friend here, since we just met and all." Eri said this last with a smirk, hoping she'd say yes. Prolonged exposure to both of them might allow him to observe interesting phenomena relating to their magic.

((SORRY! My b-day was this weekend and I bet you can imagine the kind of recuperation that was needed afterword. I promise this is the last weekend that I wont post b/c normally I'm so good ^^;. And I must apologize that my post didn't add much. Let me know if want me to add more.))

Wow, so she wouldn't have to take care of him and herself. That was going to be a relief because while she knew it was good at building character, exhausting your student didn't seem like a good strategy for learning. Though, Faye reserved a small giggle for herself while trying to imagine taking care of NightRise. Thank goodness he was a self-reliant beast else she would be ragged from all the hunting she would have to do. He was a big dragon –well at least big enough to ride- and required more meat than the average three humans. The rest of the walk Faye kept a few steps back from her new teacher and conversed lightly with NightRise. He was awfully quiet since they had started their walk to the market and wasn't much of a conversation back to Eripiam's house.

Upon approaching the door, Eripiam stopped and held aside charms that hung above on some awnings. They clanked in agitation as he moved them with a look of love in his eyes. He was obviously proud of whatever they were. NightRise bristled at the sight of them and moved a few precautionary steps back. The look of caution in his eyes gave her warrant to worry. With her own step back, Faye had it confirmed by the maker himself that these things were dangerous. Yet, hearing about the making of such objects made her face open up in wonder. She had never heard of these kinds of things and didn't know that magic could alter matter so.

Eripiam's lush green eyes then locked onto to hers for an intense moment. He warned her not to touch these things or engage electricity around them. For a few moments, she wondered what they could do when touched. It was Eripiam's muttering that gave her a small idea; making her swallow a hard lump in her throat.

What perturbed her most was these charms reacted without bias. While such powers were rare for her to exhibit, Faye had been surprised once or twice when lightening jumped from her fingers and to the nearest sword. Faye didn't want an off chance of blowing herself up so close to her. Oh well, that was why she was here –to learn how not to fear such things because of herself.

But the mood changed just as quickly as it came. He turned to Faye and NightRise with intrigue in his eyes. The offer that soon followed only made her suspicious for a few seconds before she agreed, "Of course. I would like to spend time with him before we part ways."

Making her way back to the dragon, Faye flipped flaming hair –ignited in the setting sun- over her shoulder called back to Eripiam, "NightRise can speak in the tongue of beasts and may mentally chat with those that have the talent and the interest."

They found a spot in the yard that allotted some comfort and plopped down happily next to each other.

((OOC: It's totally fine because I was really busy looking for jobs and going to interviews, as well as a host of family events that I won't bore you with... anyways, all is forgiven and sorry for the wait xP))

Eripiam went inside and got to work on the food. After the entrance there was the main living room, a simple but cozy room with a couple chairs of comfortable design and four bookshelves filled to the brim. Eri's eyes absently wandered over the titles of each book before he shook himself out of a reverie and proceeded to the next room, which was the kitchen.

In the center of the kitchen was a fire pit with a thin metal cylinder in the center. This was another of Eri's gadgets, and it passed a current through a web of tiny Prolixus strands that would set any wood upon it ablaze once the mage sent a small burst of lightning through it. Going into the corner of the kitchen, he grabbed wood for the fire and did just that, having a roaring fire in a few short moments. Looking above, Eri pulled a hanging lever close to the ceiling and opened up a square shaft that let the smoke out of the house and into the air like a makeshift chimney. Cutting the vegetables and meat with care, he set the food in a black cauldron (after thoroughly making sure he hadn't put anything magic related into it) and let it sit above the flame while he went to make small talk with his new apprentice.

Finding Faye and her dragon relaxed on his field, he called out to them before jogging over and taking a seat next to the winged reptile. "So, if I'm going to be your mentor I suppose we should get to know each other, as well as each others' magic capacity and limits. My magic instructor taught me that the more comfortable you are with your teacher, the easier it is to go through the rigors of honing your body and mind for the work ahead." He shot a comforting smile to her, then directed his mind towards NightRise. Though it wasn't inherently a menacing creature, it was impossible to forget that Faye's companion was, for all intents and purposes, a winged death machine, and it took all of Eri's will not to show an ounce of intimidation in his thoughts.

I'm told your name is NightRise. I'm not sure if you can understand my speech or my thoughts, but hello, and welcome to my home. There is game in the forest behind my house that you are free to hunt, and the fish are plentiful at the river down the hill. Just please don't kill my neighbors livestock, I'm on thin ice with a couple of them already.

Hoping that NightRise was satisfied with what he had to say, Eri waited for a response while he continued to Faye. "So, tell me the basics of yourself so we can begin learning after dinner, which should be ready in a little while. When your powers manifested, when they got out of control, strengths and weaknesses in your magic, things of that nature." After a thoughtful pause, "Include anything that you think may be a trigger for sporadic flare ups of your magic. Emotional trauma, physical distress, anything like that."
