It was dark... And empty. The only sound that could be heard was the whipping whirlwind of snow and ice only separated by a few meters of cold stone. A single light shone from above. A window slit let the light from the morning storm shine into the dark room, while a once burning fire was little more then a few coals by now. They died at the edge of the large fireplace. Across, near 5 feet, was a rather large bed. It had white sheets, and beside it was a much smaller in comparison night side table. On the table lied a single object, a purple hat. As the storm grew louder, a figure began to stir in the bed, before suddenly it rose up. This was Mavis. A young girl who had lived in Hyoite the entirety of her life. She had never even ventured far from the castle she was situated in. The girl slowly looked around the dark room,, trying to recall what she had been doing. Then she realized she had just awoken. Giving an annoyed sigh, she silently got out of bed.

Her Crimson gaze locked on the dresser, she pulled out her favorite purple shirt and dress. Within a few minutes she had changed from her long white nightgown into her white skirt and purple buttoned shirt. Mavis opened the large door to her bedroom to reveal an even darker stone hallway. Peering into the eerie blackness, she raised a hand. Suddenly a bright yellow light shone from her palm. It easily illuminated the surroundings, as she silently walked down the dark hallway. Nothing but the sound of a raging whirlwind to comfort her.

A few minutes of this, she arrived at a twisting staircase. She descended it into a much larger chamber, which was completely lit by a huge fire, constantly roaring its place. "Enevia, ma'am. Situation normal. Nothing to report." Her tired gaze looked over to see an armoured fellow holding a rather dangerous looking spear. His face covered by the meal mesh to protect it. "Oh... Is grandfather up yet?" "No ma'am. He is still asleep in the tower." Mavis's gaze grew sad. "Oh..." The guard leaned down a bit to her level. "The maid has already prepared breakfast however." He said in a friendly tone, in an effort to cheer her up. Her gaze didn't perk up. "Very well, I'll be there in a few minutes..." "Of course! Braylon! Kallus! To the ramparts!" He yelled at two guards standing near the large door into the chamber. They nodded before exiting.

Mavis soon found herself on a large balcony of the rather large castle. She didn't mind the snowstorm that whipped her white hair around. She admired the view. In the distance she could see the edge of the clouds, and the red sun starting to peer over the large Kilanthro mountain range. She sighed, putting her hands on the railing. The caste had been hundreds of years old. Built by her ancestors, the first of the great Enevia Mage family. However, those were past times. Only Mavis and her grandfather were members of the Enevia family now... And she was sure she was going to be the last. Her mother died of illness, and her father went crazy and ventured off to Connalaoth to support the mage's in the civil war. She never saw him again...

A lone figure, clad in brown cloak would be visible from Mavis' point of view, the balcony gave her quite the overview. Though he still was some ways off.

There were always moments that led up to one questioning how they had gotten to a certain point in their lives. When you could very easily pinpoint the event in your life which lead you down to the heap of problems you were in today. And Kenji was unable to pinpoint said event, for one simple reason, he was too drunk to actually remember a thing. The man trudged through the snow with colorful swears and rich curses.

He might not be able to pinpoint what lead him into these troubles. But he sure as hell knew he was in a whole lot of them. Firstly, the blood trickling down his side. Snow wolves, magnificent. Secondly, he would freeze to death here, just amazing. Thirdly, he was square out of alcohol.

And that was what pissed Kenji off the most. It wasn't the cold nor the pain. It was the lack of alcohol. And he knew that the cold and the pain were actually soothed by number three. Alcohol.

He couldn't help but spit in the snow in spite. "Best wine in Hyoite my ass", he murmured under his breath as he trudged on in the snow, unknowingly headed for the large mansion.

She signed, leaning her head against the cold railing, gazing at the seemingly endless sea of ice and snow. However, she didn't stay in that position for long. Something had caught her eye. In the distance, she saw a brown spot. Something was slowly moving across the tundra. The girl squinted her crimson eyes to get a better look. It was a person! Too far to determine gender or race, Mavis quickly found a solution. Seeing wanderers always excited her. Her life was dull as it was, never leaving the castle for nearly anything. SHe had always heard stories about the rest of the world. She found it hard to believe there were places that weren't covered in snow, but these travelers seemed to always have some sort of crazy adventure with them.

Mavis lifted out a hand, and suddenly, a large, white bird like spirit being formed. It had a long feathered tail that whisped behind it as it stared at Mavis with an eyeless head. "Go to that traveler, lead him to the gates! We can't let them die out in the cold." Without saying anything, the bird simply turned, and began gliding down towards the tundra to lead the man to the castle's entrance.

The girl quickly ran through the hallways, trying to find the captain. "Captain! We have a visitor! Please do let them in! They'll die in the cold!" The armoured man looked at the small girl, her face full of worry for the poor soul stuck out in the winter storm. "M'lady, we can't just let any stranger in-" He stopped, staring at her worried face. "Ugh, fine. But if they try anything, they'll be dealt with harshly." He turned and nodded at two other guards. They simply returned the nod and began running towards the gates. "OPEN THE GATES! LET THE TRAVELER IN!" He yelled as they scrambled to their places. Two guards and the captain stuck near Mavis, acting as her bodyguards...

Kenji snorted softly as he stopped in his tracks, looking at the large, eyeless bird that flapped around him, he flailed his arms, trying to get the bird away. Kenji, in his inebriated state, wasn't sure whether this bird was a hallucination, rather than an actual creature. It looked quite ridiculous.

The bird didn't let up and flew around him, before darting off into the distance. "Oi! I ain't done with ya!" Kenji called out as he started to limp behind the bird, shouting and cussing at the creature.

The drunk was too preoccupied by shouting at the bird, he didn't even notice the building that rose infront of him as he closed in.

However, when he was within a stone's throw from the mansion, Kenji stopped in his tracks and arched an eyebrow. "Who put that there?" He asked with a deep frown as he started to limp towards the building walking through the gates and stopping to give the guards a droll look.

Mavis peered eagerly from behind one of the guardsman into the snowstorm as the gate opened... It took a few seconds, but the bird returned to her. It flew  a few times around her head, before Mavis nodded and it dispersed. Suddenly, the cloak figure came into sight, moving rather oddly. It was limping! Mavis's eyes shot wide as she watched it intently, and that's when she saw the blood. "He's hurt!" She called out, running past the guards. "Mavis! M'lady! Don't just go near that man!" The captain called after her, but she ignored him completely. Her purple hat blew off her head as she ran up to the man to try and halp him, her sense of a fear had all but vanished when she saw he was in need. However, as soon as the small girl got close, she could smell the faint aroma of alcohol. A substance her father and grandfather would often consume. She didn't let it bother her however, as she eagerly peered into his hood. "Mister! You're hurt! Quickly, come inside, we have medical supplies!" She tried to motion him forward.

Kenji frowned as he saw, between the guards, a small brat running towards him. She looked young, very much so.

He pushed his hood off and snorted. "Aye lass," he replied with a soft chuckle.  "That's all good and well. But you got booze?"

Codex

Mavis gave him a look of confusion. What a strange accent. She had never heard one like that before. Out of all the strange travelers who came by, no one resembling that voice had made their way to her homestead. However she didn't think bout it for too long, Mavis tried to focus one what the words were saying rather then what they sounded like.

"A- Are you sure you're okay mister?" She asked concerned. Staring at the blood stain on his side, seemingly ignoring his question about alcohol. However the guards didn't. They simply gave eachother odd looks before one scoffed and whispered to his buddy: "Another drunken soul... Why do we have to nurse these guys all the time?" Mavis may have heard them, or maybe she didn't. No one could tell by her actions.

"W- We have a fire. A big one! Please come and warm yourself. You could catch a cold in your condition." She told him, her face full of worry. However the guard captain continued to stare at him with a suspicious look, keeping a close eye on his movements in case he tried anything on Mavis...

"I'm fine, I'm fine," he waved his hand in a dismissing gesture. He seemed rather unphased by the wound on his hip, which still seemed to trickle down his leg. But, arched an eyebrow, Kenji definitely heard the guards. And did take exception to that. "Oi!" He called loudly, resting his hand on his hip. "Ya got summin' to say? Then tell me to my face!" He called out response, before looking down at Mavis again.

"A fire?" He asked in confirmation, the next best thing to booze was warmth, missing the guard captain glaring at him.

Codex

"Y- Yes! A fire! Quickly come this way!" Mavis told him urgently, before reaching out, grabbing his hand and dragging him along with as much strength as the little girl could muster. The guards didn't respond to Kenji's remark, they simply stood at attention as the young sorceress moved past them. The guard captain simply nodded to two of his companions who quickly followed behind as the gate closed with the whirring of two heavy chains.

She lead him to the large chamber with a huge fireplace roaring at the other end. She simply let go of his hand before running over to one of the bigger chairs in the corner, trying with all her might to push it closer to the flames, before two of the guards came to assist her. "Sit, please! I insist! Warm yourself." She sounded rather excited to meet such a unique traveler, and couldn't wait to here his story.

Kenji was dragged along with Mavis, stumbling behind her in his inebriated state, already forgetting about the small exchange with the guards. He merely followed the young girl who frantically tried to drag him along.

Kenji was quite awed at the size of the room, looking around. In his eyes, it was even bigger than usual. And spinning, why was it spinning? He shook his head and blinked several times as a chair was slid towards the fire for him. He glanced at Mavis again and nodded. "If that makes ya happy!" He quipped rather cheerfully, before bellowing a laughter and heading to sit down at the fire.

Mavis gave a cheerful smile, before quickly running over to a large cushioned seat that was clearly meant for someone much larger then herself. Without wasting any effort, she quickly struggled to pull herself up onto it and got into a comfortable position only a few feet across from Kenji.

"So mister! What's your story? Why are you in Hyoite? Where did you come from? Where are you going? Why does you voice sound funny?" She began to bombard him with questions, not really caring how personal they seemed until the guard captain shot Mavis an odd look. That's when she caught on.

"Oh, right sorry. Not that any of those are my business..." She said embarrassed, brushing a stand of hair past her ear trying to avoid eye contact with Kenji for a moment as her face reddened. "Grandfather always tells me I'm too curious, and that the travelers like you probably don't want to tell all the details to us." She said again.

"Oh, that's right!" She chirped, looking back at Kenji. "I'm Mavis! Mavis Enevia! Welcome to my home mister...?"

There were more questions than he could count in his current state of sobriety, as soon as he tried to answer one, she had already posed another one. He frowned and decided to just let her rant on. Though the last question did quite gripe him. "Kenji Miyamoto," he answered, before snorting.

"My voice.. Sounds funny? That ain't nice o' ya," he answered with a sigh. "I'm jus' a traveler, li'l girl. That's all there is to it."

Mavis's eyes widened at his comment, and she stuttered. "O- Oh, S- Sorry.." She let a few more moments of the silence linger on as the fire continued to roar beside the two. Some of the guards shifted slightly in the uneasiness as Mavis tried to think of how to respond.

"Well... Why would you come out all the way here?" She asked suddenly. It was true, she never really understood why anyone would desire to venture out into the frozen north of Hyoite. Living here all her life, she didn't see anything about the wasteland of value. Nevertheless, it still attracted many folk.

Soon, two servants walked into the chamber, once carrying a small folding table, and the other holding a large silver tray. They stopped and placed it in front of Kenji, and placing the tray of food on top of the table before bowing and walking out without saying another word. "I hope you're hungry anyways! we got tons of food here!" She smiled.
