It had been a blink in their mind, a gap in their memory.
Blue light. Shockwaves in the earth. Lightning that scorched the ground, raising jagged pillars that crackled with sheer power. Magic itself seemed to rend reality in twine. It was chaotic, utterly divine. And they'd felt the result. It'd stung like hellfire, shredded through league after league of man, woman, child. They remembered seeing their hands, everyone's hands, burning up in ringlets of charred flesh. And they remembered thinking,
Every last cell is extinguished, yet the fires still burn!One by one, up into the blue light they went. Like small blips of light, they winked out of existence. As each one sapped away, they leaned back, turning their face up to the thundering sky. Closing their eyes, they waited. Perhaps, for the last time, it would take too much to bring them back from whence they'd came.
But, the moment, that blissful moment when the world finally shut down, and all was finally lost, had been simply a blink.
A blink, and suddenly their eyes were open again.
One, then two, then many voices rose. They joined together to scream.
