Thread location: The Stargazers Tower

Professor Woohl waited until it was appropriate, then he left the throne room so fast he probably looked like a moving shadow. He was never a man who cared much for these events, but he had been invited by the Grand Duke of all bloody people, and who in their right mind would ignore the request like that?

But he was a busy man, but the appeal to use the Grand Palace's own stargazing tower, and as a potential place for lecture was enough to lure the man in. He was pretty tempted to refuse the request, but he also wanted to keep his head, and he knew he was lucky enough not to have been shipped off already to war.

He'd make a lousy soldier anyway. He was all brains behind his wild, curly black hair, that, for once in his life, he had it combed back and tamed (or as tamed as he could, for there was at least one sprig that kept tickling across his forehead, and he was constantly swiping it back, a futile action if anything.) By the time he was done running all the way up the spiraling staircase that lead to the very top of the Stargazing tower, he was red faced and out of breath, and had many more sprigs of loose curls bouncing out from his tamed back tail.

A sweaty hand smoothed back through his hair to keep it back, a limited time solution, for no matter how greasy his hands were, his hair was about ready to 'pop'. But did that matter? Sure, looks were good for something, and he knew he was certainly not a completely hideous man, on the contrary, he was rather solid over the fact he knew he wasn't down right ugly, but he also couldn't compare to the other pretty boys all powdered up in the nobility line up (and he couldn't help but openly gawk at the pretty blue eyed mordecai known as the hound stationed near the scar-faced Grand Duke. What was the man's name? Zannrick Austengarde he believed. If the man ever had children, the girls would be beautiful, that much he knew. Those blue eyes could be seen for miles away (but perhaps it was because there were so many present that had eyes of green).

His own eyes lack a dominant trait- they could be blue or green, he honestly didn't know. They looked simply grey to him- and washed out. But he wasn't entirely going for looks that night. No, no, he was more interested in the telescopes and hogging them all to himself. And he knew, without a doubt, he'd be the first (and probably only one) up there, and hopefully for at least the first hour of the ball.

He wanted to do a lot of his own personal research while here- and though he had a game plan to aid 'others' who sought to learn about the scopes and who they aided in the vision of seeing the stars much more closely, he was definitely a more selfish man in that regard. He'd be completely fine with no body showing up at all.

So when he approached the biggest scope, with it's sculpted gold cast and massive end lenses, he was almost taken aback when he realized...

"Oh... I didn't realize anyone else was already up here."
And immediately he frowned.
Who could this stranger be? And how had they gotten up here well before he?

The Duke of Vythe, Daemion d'al Astarot moved from the shadows into the light, adjusting his wire-framed spectacles as he moved into the center of the conservatory, a copper spider perched upon his shoulder as he greets listlessly," Professor Woohl," the creature atop his shoulder was busily rubbing its fore-mandibles together, making a metallic squeaking sound. It seemed to be a highly intricate machine, placed together by none other then the duke's hands, which were stuffed deeply into the pockets of his black dress-coat.

Admittedly, he had come to the conservatory to escape any social interaction, alas, it was of course too much to hope for. His unmoved mask barely shifted as he focuses upon the great telescope before his counterpart," Do the stars say anything different then they have in previous nights?" He inquires vaguely, a weak attempt at small talk.

"Ah, Duke d'al Astarot." He addressed the other man with a stiff nod, maybe leaning in a bit for a bow, but he was always short in the way he addressed nobles, even those higher than him. In fact, he sometimes misspoke with the Grand Duke himself- but that was just his ways. It wasn't meant in offense, and it was generally accepted he was more or less... eccentric.

"No, I'm afraid the stars haven't spoken at all today, nor the day before, or any other days that have gone by in history. But if you are interested in trying out my new star-looking glass, by all means," he bowed the best he could while gesturing towards his prize. He was proud of it, after all. It was one of his latest inventions of the day. Had he more time, this little thing would have been done years ago. But then again, he had been paid for by the crown to do the recently built church in Reajh and though he was proud of all of the gossip and gushing he had received by it, there would always be the yearning to have done more.

The thrum of music continued to play, carrying leftward, then right of the Stargazing tower with each step he took. Heavy boots echoed on the stone, sweat slicked his brow but he didn't care. His mind was thrumming far heavier than his heart, and the tangled mess of innocence and death...

He didn't want to think about the child's face..
Nor that dreadful woman's who had managed to seduce the Grand Duke. He supposed he couldn't blame him for being a man, but....
If given the choice, he would have found a way to have the inconvenient woman parish right there along with the babe.

It was the wrong place.. the wrong time...
The wrong everything, but even deep down, Zannrick was having a hard time shaking the innocence lost on the face of the still born child.

By the time he reached the top of the tower it appeared mostly empty, and he pushed away behind a few towers of books on the floor just beneath the deck that opened up into the sky.
He wasn't sure if he wanted to make his way up the next flight of stares or not- though the hot temperature of his body craved the sweet night air.

He paused to lean against a wall in the back, in the darkness to catch his breath.
No one was here. No one could see him. And he was far enough away from her.... and from the Grand DUke himself, whose side he rarely never kept.

He wasn't sure if he wanted to scream or cry. But he couldn't recall the last time he ever shed a tear. Even in pain, the sting of his eyes were minimal and he was able to swallow back so much emotion...

So why was it when he witnessed the birth of death did he feel so.... shaken?

He ran a hand down his sweaty face, only to grown in pure irritation as his metal clad fingers felt so detached. He shrugged off his glove, then the other, just letting them fall to the ground and raking a hand through his sweat damped hair and paused a moment beside an open window, allowing for just that little bit of cool night air to come in and comfort him as he slowly began to catch his breath.

It was the last place she wanted to be.

Gwendolyn Mittermeyer climbed up the spiral staircase of the Stargazing tower, shield held closely to her chest. She was out of her armor for the first time in what felt like years, dressed now in a very plain brown dress- it wasn't the sort of occasion she'd ever had to by clothes for.

The church twisted her arm to get her to attend. On a normal day, the Adhara would be overjoyed to have a night off- it was rare enough that she was even given the time to return to Reajh, let alone given enough time to enjoy herself. Of course, this wasn't really time off. Not her her eyes, at least. Being here meant she was obligated to socialize with nobility and military higher-ups, one of her least favorite things to do. She had hoped that she could simply congratulate the Grand Master and find an excuse to leave early, but that proved more troublesome than she'd expected- when Gwendolyn had finally tracked the Grand Master down, she found the woman in an argument with another guest. It wasn't the sort of thing she wanted to involve herself in, so she'd left in search of someplace quiet to wait out the affair.

And so here she was, actively avoiding having to interact with people. Reaching the top of the tower, Gwendolyn cracked the door open and peered inside. It looked to be somebody's private study- bookshelves lined the walls, and a large desk sat at the rooms center. The place looked empty from a glance, and the soldier exhaled in relief. Gently she pushed the door open, only to find that something was preventing it from opening all the way. Unable to squeeze both herself and the shield through, she pushed harder...

... and accidentially knocked over a large stack of books. They fell to the floor with a loud clatter, causing Gwendolyn to wince audibly. "I hope nobody heard that..."

He heard someone coming. His body tensed, fingers on his blade-
and when a second later there was an explosion of books, Zannrick could do nothing more than react. And when the dust settled, a book was skewered on the end of his blade- which was pointing directly at Gwendolyn's face.

As it turned out, somebody had heard it.

Almost immediately after the books had fallen, a man had jumped in from balcony, brandishing a sword. Gwendolyn immediately took a defensive stance, stepping behind her shield before the absurdity of the situation hit her. "At ease, soldier..." she murmured softly, seemingly more to herself than to the stranger. Upon a closer glance at the man, she smiled faintly. "You, ah... have a thing, there." she said, hesitantly pointing at his sword with her free hand. "It looks stuck..."

visualspice

The pages were still settling on the skewed book when the woman brought it to his attention, but his blue eyes did not remove themselves from her. It took him just a few seconds to realize who it was, before he narrowed his gaze and spoke.

"Gwendolyn, woman with the shield," as if that were her full name, and somehow, him speaking it came out with such distaste. And the fact she called him soldier, it had him bristling as he looked her over, sword still at the ready before lowering it towards the ground where he tapped off the book, where it fell into a flopped plop amongst the other pages and mess.

Did she honestly not know who he was? The right hand man, sole protector of the Grand Duke (or as a lot of others murmured, 'The Hound' to the Grand Duke.)

The man's reply was cold, and Gwendolyn's smile faded. As usual, she hadn't needed introduce herself. "...Yes." she said, nodding awkwardly. "That is me." Why did he seem so mad? It'd been an accident...

"Maybe he'd been charged with guarding the books, and now he's worried he'll be reprimanded..." she thought. He brow furrowed. "No, that's silly. Unless... hm."

"Would... you like help cleaning this up?" she murmured. "It's the least I could do..."

visualspice

"The least you could do would be nothing," came Zannrick's icy reply. The anger from him was palpable, undoubtably felt throughout the room in an unseen tangiblity.
"The mess is yours to fix."
He didn't give the woman any more of his time. He wasn't to be alone and this clumsy, mess of a woman was crowding him.

He needed air. He needed to clear his head.

He needed to think of anything else but that dead child...
And the mess the Grand Duke was tangling himself up in.

Hope... the child, growing famous due to it's birth in the church- was already a challenge Zannrick dispised, but it was still the Grand Duke's bastard son...
and one he would undoubtably protect with his wife- the very idea that made him loath his own self for.

He began to question the Grand Duke for it- but he supposed desperate men sought attention anywhere...
And the growing hatred for the mage mother only grew stronger for it.

So he left the shield woman to her pile of books, brushing past her after picking up his discarded glove and found his way outside onto the rooftop, where the cool night air was most welcoming and he paused at the edge of a balcony, just allowing himself to stand before it- allowing the high winds to rustle through his sweat damped hair and cool off some of his heated temper.

But his mind was still in a roll, and a storm was brewing inside.
