The dreamscape wasn't so different from the real world--mainly because it was influenced by dreamers, and most dreams, while often wild, were made up of elements that the dreamer had encountered in their life. That, and it was influenced by the dreamwalkers themselves; everyone perceived the dreamscape, and the dreams occupying it, differently. For Simonea, it was a dusky forest filled with many strands of silver threads like spidersilk, and each thread was a dream. It was beautiful to her, and yet it always had an eerie, ethereal quality to it.

That night felt especially unsettling to Simonea as she walked through a dream forest, following the silver threads of various dreams, plucking at them lightly to get a glimpse of them. Not all were peaceful; some were nightmares, taut and pulsing a sort of dark, restless energy, their silver tarnished, and she paused over those ones and gently stroked them, hoping to calm them and imbue peace. When the threads relaxed, no longer tight with tension and anxiety, she moved on.

She didn't have much time tonight to do more than that. Tonight was different. Tonight was a test, her first test, for tonight she was to cast away a demon.

It wasn't the first time she had battled a demon. She had dealt with her share of vampiric incubi. But this one was different. Stronger. It wasn't an incubus, but something else, something that lulled its victims to sleep before feeding on their blood--usually to the point of death. It didn't even bother to give its victim pleasant dreams, but instead riddled them with nightmares, relishing in the "flavor" the fear and adrenaline lent the blood. She could track it through the distinct "signature" its nightmares carried--a distinct sort of delight and perverse excitement--and attack it through those nightmares, once she found them. The demon was linked to the dreamscape by those nightmares, and thus vulnerable. If she played her cards right, she could seriously wound it, even kill it, as she had done with several incubi before it.

Of course, tonight might be a fluke. Maybe it wouldn't show up tonight. But there had been several unexplained deaths in the village she was staying in already, each victim drained of blood even though their bodies had no marks. She had to be close to solving this case!

And that was when she saw one nearby thread twitch and dull, and Simonea turned sharply and reached out to touch it--and let out a hissed gasp at the pain that seared through her fingers, burning her fae skin like iron. The thread writhed, and Simonea forced herself to grab it, gritting her teeth through the pain, and focused on the nightmare.

It was Annabel's nightmare, a young girl in a home right next to the inn Simonea was staying in. And as she delved deeper into the nightmare, one filled with more blood and gore than any child should know about, she knew the images didn't belong to the girl--especially as she felt the demonic delight radiating off them. The demon didn't discriminate when it came to its victims.

Fear clutched her heart, fear for the girl, and she knew she had to act fast; a child had far less blood than an adult. Reaching deep and ignoring the pain, she stepped into the nightmare even as every instinct screamed for her to flee. Instantly, she was surrounded by a horrorscape, some awful dream about rogues burning and slaughtering the entire village, and there were bodies and limbs everywhere, the smell of fire and offal so real Simonea gagged. And nearly vomited when she realized she was standing in a puddle of congealing blood.

It's not real, she reminded herself, not wanting to get swept up into the nightmare; it was too easy to lose oneself and fall asleep, whisked away by a dream, if one wasn't careful. And so she focused hard and looked around, searching for the cord that belonged to the demon--the one that linked its life to this world.

A dream-marauder with an axe swung it at her head, and with a thought, Simonea sent him sprawling across the ground. She imagined herself as being surrounded by a shield of light, and when another dream-bandit swung a cudgel at her, it bounced off the shield. Right then. That took care of those distractions.

Focus, Simonea.

Swallowing hard, she walked through the burning dreamscape with her head held high, keeping calm as she could. Her panic would only influence the dream, and influence it negatively. The cord could be anywhere. It could be disguised as an element of the dream itself. It could be--

And then she saw a red, shining cord on the ground, leading inside a dilapidated home. Picking up her pace, and dreaming a sword into her hands, she followed after it even as it slithered inside the home like a snake. Lunging for it as it tried to snake its way up the crumbling stairs within that dark home, she grabbed it in one hand to hold it steady even as she lifted the sword and prepared to strike--

Only for the rest of it to coil abruptly around her feet and yank, pulling her off balance. Before she could recover, another length of it shot around the hand that held the sword, and before she knew it, it had wrapped around her like a python even as she struggled.

She tried to scream, but it came out raspy from the pressure on her chest. And then, from the top of the stairs, a creature that may have once been a man emerged from the shadows and smiled a smile with far too many teeth. "Gotcha."

Simonea woke with a choked scream, eyes snapping open--and when they adjusted, she abruptly realized she was no longer in her room at the inn, but outside in the woods. Heart pounding, she jerked to sit up, but couldn't; her hands, she realized with a jolt of panic, were bound behind her back, and her legs were also bound.

Heart in her throat, hardly able to breathe, she turned her head--and found herself staring straight into the eyes of the demon where he sat not feet from her, grinning like a cat that got the canary. "Scream more," he purred. "They taste delicious."

It was a trap, Simonea realized as dread made her stomach churn like she'd eaten something rotten. The demon had felt her getting closer, had known she was onto it and tracking it.

And it had trapped her before she could trap it.

"I must be lost..."
The scrawny stick of a boy sighed, breaking into a yawn. It did not take long for Daliance to fall into a deep sleep, for he had walked the mount from one foot to the other unwittingly.
The Dream calls.
A hellscape of fire and blood. Gristly gore and eviscerated innards lay strewn amidst the cheerfully burning homes. Thick and greasy smoke rolled forth in a torrential wave of nauseating fumes.
Daliance stood in the midst of this, gut churning at the charnel odor, wishing for a dream of peace, women and wine.
A red tendril wound a path to a home, where He saw...

Startled awake by a sudden voice, Daliance leapt to his feet as if he intended to jump up a tree.
There was a deep, raspy voice speaking deeper in the woods away from the safety of the clearing he found earlier.
The light was waning post-haste, and as he did on many occasion Daliance complained "Why did I only get great hearing instead of great eyesight from my mother?"

So this was how the creature operated. Hunt and trap its prey in dreams, and feed on them in the physical world. Oh gods. Simonea was a warrior (in training!), that was true, but her battlefield was the dreamscape. The physical world had more rules, more limitations--her own small body being one of them. While she knew some basic self defense, it would do her little good now.

All she had left was her wits. She just had to stay calm, had to clamp down on the primal, gnawing fear and keep it at bay. If she panicked, she would have nothing. Think. Think! This beast fed on fear, after all. She couldn't afford to give it what it wanted.

But she couldn't keep from shuddering as the demon traced her cheek with a long, claw-like nail, her breath catching and stomach clenching. "I usually prefer much younger prey," the demon mused, eyes shining a jaundiced yellow in the dark. "They have so much life left in them, and so much fear. But you're fae, are you not? Your kind live a long, long time, and you're young for a fae."

His smile twitched, flashing rows of needle-like teeth. "Human lives never last long. But you, I can keep. You, I can savor. We can play for a long, long time."

Simonea rolled her eyes and turned her face away. "Only if I'm interested in 'playing'," she said, steeling her nerves as best as she could, hoping the demon couldn't sense her heart beating away like hummingbird wings or smell the terror in her sweat. She shrugged as best as she could bound like she was, and snapped a look back at him, staring defiantly into his eyes.

"I know your kind. My kind is trained for it. By all means, do your worst, but you're just going to bore us both."

"Is that a challenge, Simonea?"

Ice shot down her back at the use of her name--how long had he been aware of her?--and she prayed to all the gods that her eyes didn't show it. "Not much of one, but sure, if that's what makes you happy."

Calm. Stay calm. Oh gods. Her version of calm was terrible, though! She hadn't meant to issue a challenge, what was she thinking?! She had only meant to buy time!

"You'll find I'm not afraid of much; I'm no stranger to nightmares. But I know what you're afraid of, demon. So I'll ask you, who's trapped who?"

What the bloody hell was she even saying? What did that even mean?! She didn't know what he was afraid of! It was all bluff, and a terrible one at that since...gods, no one would have noticed her missing at this hour, and if they did, who would come after her? She was providing the villagers a service, yes, but they weren't her friends. They had no reason to track her, and probably no means of it, anyway, if this demon was discreet.

The demon blinked down at her, yellow orbs winking in and out of the dark. And then he laughed, deep and guttural. "You really expect me to belie--"

He snapped a look behind him then, a scowl on his shadowy face. A voice in the distance had caught his ear. With a soft rumble deep in his throat, he turned back to Simonea and grabbed her, lifting her off the ground while she cried out in alarm. He held her like a bride, but his claws dug into her skin through her linen nightgown until she thought they would pierce her. "We'll continue this elsewhere," he snarled. But though Simonea hadn't heard anything, she understood, and a glimmer of hope sparked inside her.

Time to risk it all.

"Help!" she screamed, and started to thrash, but that was as far as she got before the demon growled and covered her mouth with a scaly hand.

"Help!" A woman's desperate cry echoed out from a little way past the treeline. "Curse me pale and old!" Daliance exclaimed as he shouldered his bag and sprinted heedless to danger, focused solely on finding the source of the scream. He had no idea why he was rushing towards the sound of screaming; his only reaction was a gut-feeling screeching at him to run faster. His headlong rush under branches from low-slung pines and over scruffy underbrush ferns and creepers saw him well away from the clearing and nearly into a scene only found in dreams.

A beautiful woman in a simple gown, crowned by lustrous pale tresses and distinctive fae feathers. He stared for a half second before the rest of the scene registered. A demon held her in wicked talons, sharp and red being all that came to mind for poor Daliance. Its back was turned to him, caught in mid-stride by Daliance's sudden appearance.

"Uh-dh-uh umm," He stammered to the hammering of his heart against his chest, "wh-wha-w-what in the thousand damnations is that?!"
His bag fell as his hands whipped dramatically into the signs and sigils of the magicks his father taught him. In the instant after his hands started their mad dance a clap of thunder sounded behind the demon's spined head.

"Come pick on something your own weight you filth!" Daliance was startled by the audacity of his tone, yet smirked as if he had a secret to tell. This was not going to end well...

The demon's sensitive ears picked up the sounds of rushing footsteps and stuttering words, and he whipped around in time to see a dark man there, hands making strange, practiced motions. He hadn't lived several centuries to not be able to recognize magic when it was happening right before him--and he also knew he wouldn't be able to enjoy his meal with that scrawny whelp harassing him. For all that he was a seasoned predator, like many predatory animals, he preferred to catch and kill unbothered and actually hated confrontation. He wasn't built for that; his style was sneaking and hiding and mind games and traps, not open combat.

But he knew he wasn't going to be able to keep his prey if he didn't deal with this here and now.

With a hiss of irritation, he tossed Simonea into the bushes to free up his hands. She landed with a yelp, twigs scratching at her as she rolled out of them and onto the forest floor, but she kept her wings tucked tight to keep them as safe as she could. What the...? Disoriented and stinging, she turned onto her belly and peered through a gap in the bushes, trying to figure out what had just happened, and she sucked in a breath. An elf, dressed in bright tones, yelling out a challenge to the beast. She hadn't actually expected anyone to hear.

Thunder crackled behind the demon's head, and it let out a bestial roar as its features, too, began to change, its figuring becoming stooped, its face elongating into a snout, its spines stiffening and growing and bursting along its back. Its fingers lengthened into hooked claws and it snapped its jagged teeth as though testing its bite, even as its body continued to grow. Come pick on something his own weight, hm? It was soon double that.

"You'd best leave well enough alone, boy," it said, voice a deep, grating gravel. "But if you'd prefer to join her, so be it."

"Light! It hates light!" Simonea shouted as the hairs along her arms prickled with energy. Lightning. Could he summon lightning? If he could... "Blind it!"

And then the beast leapt, lunging straight for the man with its claws out and teeth bared.

Daliance Keen, in a moment of pure brilliant intellect, stumbled forward underneath the snapping jaws of the fiend. Its claws raked against his spine in a searing slash of pain that left him sprawled on his belly with a face full of dirt and leaves.

"My mother is more a terror than your, foul beast!" Daliance blurted out. His hand scrambled for his pocket as the Demon, appearing like some hellish wolf, turned around for another lunge. Daliance found what he was looking for in time for the demon to fling itself, maw agape, at him with gusto.
"FLEE MY FIRE!" Daliance screeched as his hand flung a gem at the demon's snout.

It burst into a massive conflagration that flung Daliance into a tree with a concussive crack.

The demon's scream was a terrible thing, a high-pitched, animal screeching that made Simonea's ears ring. Simonea had suggested he blind the creature; he had taken it that much further and engulfed it in flames.

Flames wreathed the demon and a greasy, sulfuric smell filled the air as it burned and flailed, trying desperately to roll and put the fire out. But the flames clung to it like mud, and only grew more intense, and as it screamed if one were to look at its face, they would see its face had melted down to its skull, and there were only charred, empty sockets where its eyes had been. With another wailing screech, it turned blindly and bolted, slamming into a tree so hard the trunk cracked before righting itself and continuing to run. And all the while it continued to burn, its form a fiery glow that gradually grew fainter, and then vanished into the woods.

Wide-eyed, Simonea stared at the tree it had slammed into, its trunk blackened where it had struck, and then looked at the man. That...was wholly unexpected.

But not without consequences.

Struggling where she lay, Simonea tried to sit up, wings fluttering uselessly as though they could help push her up.

"Quick, untie me!" she said, not noticing his injuries in the dark, and desperate only to get well the hell away from here. "You've made an enemy of it, now. It'll come back."

The world was a ringing blur of pain after the explosive gem. Daliance couldn't feel his face or his legs, his back felt like it was on fire, and he forgot how to breath.
Wait, no. I remember now. In deep and swift like-
"Aaaagh!" He screamed. Breathing in was a bad plan. Trying again to catch his breath, albeit much slower now, he winced at the pain, and exhaled. Twice more, and the world around him came into focus.

The pretty fae woman was saying something to him. His ears must've been full of cotton as her voice sounded like a whisper. He grit his teeth, bracing for incredible pain, as he heaved hinself to his hands and knees. Adrenaline cleared his ears and eyes when he remembered the demon.
"Oh hell's handbaskets! I am coming! Hold on!" He proclaimed in that way when someone forgets that what they are hearing is a fraction of what the volume is.

From his other pocket he procured a small knife as he stumbled up and over to the young fae woman. His knife flicked against the binding with practiced ease. "Who are you? What in the hell happened?" His babbling panic bubbled up as he held out his hand for her to take. "That is probably not important right now. Can the thing find us if we run fast? Are you in any condition to run?" He continued, talking for his own benefit at this point.
Wow, she is pretty. Daliance thought to himself before shaking his head clear of that. "Is there any safe place nearby? I got myself lost roundabout these parts last week."

Rhindeer

...Oh. So he hadn't come out in one piece after all, if that scream was any indication. Simonea winced at the sound, watching him with concern, but he wasn't so bad off that he was unable to stumble his way over to her. Good, good. She hoped he could endure a little longer, because there was no time for wound licking.

Now if only he could be a little quieter...

Not that she was going to complain now, after he'd done her such a kindness at his own expense.

She let out a breath of relief when the rope fell away, sitting up quickly and rubbing at her chaffed wrists and ankles as he babbled at her. He was right; half his questions were unimportant right now. But she had a feeling there would be time to fill him in.

"Are you in any condition to run, much less walk?" Simonea asked as he pulled her to her feet. "He didn't hurt me, but you..." A flutter of her wings and she skirted behind him--and winced at the sight of his shredded back. She couldn't tell how bad it was, in the dark and under all the blood; sometimes shallow cuts bled dramatically, after all. But even shallow wounds could be agonizing, and small cuts could go rotten untreated. "Never mind me. There's a village over...ah..."

She trailed off, frowning as she stared through the woods for a familiar landmark. How far did he bring her? "...Horsefeathers. I don't actually know! Ah, no matter! You got him good, so it should keep him occupied for a little while, but even so, we mustn't run. That only attracts attention. The trick is to stay calm! If you can stay calm and quiet and exude confidence and dominance then you stand a better chance of not dying horrifically as prey. And you don't want to be that thing's prey. It'll--"

She paused, realizing she was babbling stream of consciousness style, and cleared her throat. So much for calm. But she could hardly help it after everything had gone spectacularly tits up, and now she'd gotten someone else involved. Which meant it was her duty to protect him. Gods. Maybe she hadn't been ready for this mission after all.

"Ahem. Well. Let's begin. We just need to go. I'm...I'm sure I'll recognize something eventually. If you feel woozy, feel free to lean on me. We'll get you seen to!"

His laugh was panic and mania. "I hope that the creature remembers what the gem looks like. I have two more and one that coats things in flammable grease." His eyes roved, restless like the hunted animal he was, as he walked away. He felt as if his back was a shredded mess even though he knew the beast only managed to scrape his spine.

Eyes alight with a wild flame, Daliance spoke up "let's head in the opposite direction of that thing. Even deeper in the woods is fine so long as we can get away." His first tentative step had him on his hand and knees as he coughed up blood. "Oh," he bubbled past the red, "I may need a shoulder to lean on."

"If," Daliance posited, "there is a village nearby, then that blasted explosion should have alerted them."

Rhindeer

...That wasn't good.

Eyes widening, Simonea ducked closer to the man and slipped under his arm, hooking it around her shoulders and holding his wrist for support. He was taller than her, and heavier, so it was awkward and she was wobbly, but she did her best to keep balance. He was coughing up blood, which meant it was likely deeper than it looked. Had the demon pierced his kidney? Or something else? Either way, spitting up blood like that wasn't good, and meant there was something serious going on, something internal. They definitely had to get him treated quickly--but there was no sense in telling him that and making him panic. That wouldn't help the situation.

Calm. She had to stay calm. Panic clouded judgment. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly.

"I doubt it'll come back after what you did to it," she lied. "They're not that stupid. Come on, now. One foot in front of the other! But don't push yourself. Let me know if you're dizzy and we'll stop."

Think, think! Where was the village from here? No matter, heading in the opposite direction that the creature had run was a good start. And so she began to move, eyes roving for a familiar sign.
