The past year the people had seen only a glimpse of the towering glory that was to come. The Great Allarrian Church of Ansgar had been proposed and caused quite the stirring of gossip throughout the entire capital of Connlaoth. Though some criticized it, there was a lot of praise for it as the nobles in the city, especially, felt it was time to properly give such a church to their patron God.

The Grand Duke had faced a lot of political punches during his reign, but now it seemed his favor was coming back in full, as the gilded peaks of the towering church began to form. Many turned their heads in awe at such a sight, and finally it was announced by the end of the month- the Great Church would be opened, and it would be a public celebration day.

Word spread quickly, for not many were allowed to step within the confines of the Grand Duke's palace itself, but that was the chosen sight for this new holy structure, and it was said the Grand Duke wished for all of his people to enjoy this blessed gift. Word also was getting around that perhaps the war was waning, that the mages were giving up- and if not...
They surely would after seeing such a sight as the Great Church.

"It is said a Golden Statue was erected of Angsar himself."

Another snorted, less enthused, "I also heard there was a gold statue of the Grand Duke as well."

"It would only be fitting. The funds came from his family line, and duchy-"

"And from the astronomical raise in taxes!"

The people were certainly torn, but like it or not, the month was moving by quickly, and the day for the Church to open its doors had finally come. The entire city was alive with energy, even long before dawn. It was said there would be a morning mass that day,a nd just about everyone- rich, poor, young and old, came out and began to line up along the great walled entry into the palace.

Fred had said 'just about any day now'.

Medina was stubborn though and wanted to see the historic event. It would end up in text books and Medina would get to tell her child that she had been there that morning. At the front of the rush, too! Then again, Medina hadn't been sleeping well, getting here long before dawn to wait. Even fell asleep a little after she'd sat down. The little twinges had been normal lately and she smoothed her hand over her dress.

Any day now.

Hopefully this day.

She was relatively far from home and Fred wasn't nearby.

Medina looked up when the bells rang, signalling the beginning of mass and while she'd never been overly religious she could only rub her pregnant belly and beg God for a good life for her child. Another twinge and she winced, ever so slightly. The alterioir motive for being here layed in her clenched fist.

The ring her strange gave her.

Maybe she'd see him.

Medina wanted to.

Some small part of her wanted to see him. The little part of her that was afraid. Still, Medina was full of bravado and when they finally let people into the church she walked in and her breath was stolen away. It was beautiful. Her hand smoothed over her stomach again, pressing against another twinge. Medina ended up somewhere near the front, scanning the area for her stranger. Though the twinges got worse and before long she was pale, though still looking around in awe.

The place was packed, and Medina would find herself being bumped into on more than one occasion. It seemed the Grand Duke was no where in the crowd, which was true. High above the pews stood the Grand Duke at attention, appearing as gilded and awe inspiring as the building itself.

It was an elbow that had her yelp in pain.

It was like a jolt and everything went tense.

The sermon had started, a cool breeze blew in from the door - the church too full and too welcoming to close the doors. Though another surprised gasp of pain and Medina clutched her belly before biting her lip and going quiet. Labour was supposed to take hours and she could handle some pain. The people beside her were giving her odd looks, the way she stared ahead.

A shaky breath and a brief glance around.

She couldn't do this.

Medina stood up abruptly, realizing the little twinges had been labour pains and she leaned heavily on the side of the pew before she let out another yelp of pain. She wanted her sister. She wanted Fred. Fred had said any day now. Not today. Her knuckles went white with how hard she gripped the polished wood and hand clamped over her mouth to muffle another cry of pain while she tried to leave the church.

Needless to say her display had interrupted the sermon and she was oblivious to the stares, bent over and breathing through the pain, taking little steps towards the doors in between the pain.

There was the great story of Ansgar sculpted into the walls, where lit scones made it shimmer and come to life. Even the spiraling staircase that lead to the encased pulpit where the sermon was being spoken by the elder priest, Jallick Prest, was  accentuated in such marvelous detail that danced in a deco of colors flittering in from the stained glass windows that towered up and up towards the sky. But what over shadowed all of this- even the great statues that were getting the most attention, nestled just beneath the windows- was when the word got around-

"There's a woman in labor!"

If the crowd assembled wasn't enough, soon people were pushing to get near to her. The Grand Duke hadn't noticed anything amiss until the sermon had stopped. His brow furrow and he leaned forward, but was unable to tell just what was going on. He leaned in towards one of his men, who went to investigate, but was quick to return, stating,

"My Lord,a woman- she is giving birth!"

And at such a revel, Calent's entire being froze.

The first cool hand to touch her forehead had her jolt and Medina quickly jerked away, only to be wracked with another pulse of pain. Why did this hurt so bad? Every fibre of her being wanted to use magic to sooth the hurt but she knew, even now, that she and her child would probably be long dead before she could explain. The way outside was blocked by curious stares and Medina got to her feet, taking deep careful breaths.

"Oh no," she whispered when she felt a trickle of liquid down her legs before she pressed a hand to the underside of her belly.

Tears welled in her eyes and she stared down at the ground, not wanting to look up at the strangers around her. The ring dug into her palm and she gave another strangled cry when a jolt of pain caught her by surprise. This was all too fast. She dreaded to believe she was going to give birth to her child in a church. That wasn't the story she wanted to tell.

Gentle hands tried to coax her towards the front of the church where there was more space, but Medina only got a few steps before she's tense up and go quiet, only to begin a frantic mumble, looking around in a panic. Where was he? She couldn't return his ring if she couldn't find him and if she has this child here as it's a boy he'd probably never take it back.

"She's mutterin' about strangers and rings,"

Which quickly enough had people give her space except for the few women who kept trying to sooth her, whispering gentle words and encouraging praises.

There was no mistaking who it was and how this had come to be. The way the lights came in, shining down in rainbows upon the suffering woman....

Quietly he slipped away, descending down into the masses. It didn't take his men long to command order while Calent remained on the side lines, int he shadows. The head guard moved forward, a mordecai- evident by the crest on his armor.

"My lady.. please, you are in labor. It is requested you lay here and bare this child."

The priest went on to agree.

"There is no other place as safe as this sanctuary in the church. Surely Ansgar is meant to praise you, praise this child in this new and most holy of places. Please.." He moved to help her, fetching pillows and commanding his brothers to fetch water.

ANd once they were able to get her seated, the priest went on to ask, "The husband- where is he? Shall we send for him or is he here among us?"

No!

She didn't want to have it here!

Still, the commanding tones had her obey. Medina was scared and quickly enough she was on her back, propped up by pillows. Frantic shakes of her head, "I don't know," the concept of lying wasn't present in her head but he squeezed the ring tighter. Lying and just not telling all the facts would achieve the same thing. "I don't know," another wave of pain and she moved her free hand to her face, to cover her eyes.

Tears welled in her golden eyes and her dark hair clung to her sweaty forehead.

Having her child in the church.

Labour was long, Medina knew, and for the most part she was quiet except for a few pained moans. It wasn't until the pain got worse but everything got dark and hazy, head tilted back, face pale. Face lax and she dropped the ring - which thankfully tucked it's self into the fold of her skirts. The pain seemed far away and she stared up at the grand church, deaf to the commotion around her which apparently was worse.

Still, her eyes drifted closed and her body went lax, almost as if she had died.  Really though, she'd just fainted.

It seemed all had been going well, but when the woman became more suffered by the passing hours, the guests were ushered outside, leaving just a few behind to witness and care for the woman screaming in pain. But when it seemed no progress was being made, and a local doctor called in, and the woman- fainting, he could only fear the worst.

"We need the woman awake. The child can not push itself out. The longer she remains in this writhing state the more dangerous this'll become. Both woman and child could be compromised-" The doctor was trying to explain, and at such a notion did finally the Grand Duke step forward.

"A thing that will not happen in my church."

The men all present were quick to bow.

"MY Lord..."

But the man was silenced as Calent raised his hand and looked down at the woman's form. It figured fate would rue him on this day.

"Get smelling salts, or anything else that we can use to awaken her."

The last thing he wanted, needed, was for a pregnant woman to die in this church during its grand ceremony.

"And water.. fresh hot water, and more towels!" the Grand Duke barked, only then- being so close to Medina in her state, did he realize how much fear gripped him that this could be the end.

Medina jolted awake with a sharp gasp an her world was pain. Alert, eyes wide and golden Medina gave a hushed moan, pressing her hands to her belly and dropping her head back. Still pale the pain got worse until she quietly, face red, bared down. By now her legs were naked with her dress draped over her raised knees for modesty, the doctor checking her progress.

There were words said but it was all a blur and she's just numbly nod to whatever was said.

It took a while for her to notice him, a brief glance around had him catch her eye and she stared at him for a few minutes before another wave of pain had her tense up and she squeezed her eyes shut.

"This is it," she gasped out, clutching at her dress, shifting her position. She knew it would be soon, the pressure was too much. The pain was a far away thought and when she felt hands on her knees and a body between her legs - currently she didn't care who it was - she was only glad that someone was to help her instead of embarrassed.

The gentle urge to push from the doctor - off to the side - and Medina followed the instructions, silent and stoic, gasping for breath between the contractions. It wasn't until the pressure was gone and the loud wail of a baby was heard did she go boneless, eyes closing while she gasped for breath.

"Is it healthy?" She gasped out, eyes opening to look blearily at the figure by her waist.

Though the doctor was more than capable of it, it seemed he was growing a bit frantic. There was a lot of blood- as there always was during birth, but he was seeming clammy in the moment rather than stoic and strong as he ought to. Eventually, as it seemed the help wasn't moving fast enough,t he Grand Duke moved forward, rolling sleeves backa nd handing off his gloves.

"Let me help."

And who was to oppose him. ANd while he got down with the doctor between her legs, her couldn't believe what he was witnessing- Or even how it had happened, but as the child cried and writhed, alive to the world, he found himself cradling it in his arms. It was a sloppy mess, only lightly patted off from its birthing, but nothing could stray his eyes from the child's as they looked at one another, and the little infant wailed.

"Healthy with those wind pipes!" One of the men chimed in, which finally broke the tension as laughter echoed throughout the church.

"Well, what is it? What did the little lady have?"

All eyes went ot the Grand Duke, who was still staring down at the child. He didn't even bother to look. He already knew.

"A boy."

It seemed everyone paused.

"She had a baby boy."

A boy.

Medina laid back, eyes closed briefly before she looked to the Grand Duke. Staring at him while he held her child. Their child. He'd delivered his own son. Dread filled her and she felt tears well in her eyes, her arms out and open. "Hand me my son," she whispered voice shaking, sitting up straighter, staring at her child in the Grand Duke's arms. "Please."

If there was any hesitation, he didn't show it. He knelt before her, as any man so grand a station could, and held the wriggling, loosely clothed child to her.

"Your son is beautiful," he murmured, the second the boy was in her arms.

Medina just about started to cry once her wriggling baby was in her arms and not wanting to bare her breast in front of so many strangers for the baby to occupy his mouth she nuzzled her knuckle in and the baby grew silent.  Medina looked to Calent, trying to smile and she looked at her son again. In the flesh. Right there in her arms.

"I would be honoured if you named..." Medina paused, looking down at the baby again. Eyes closed, exaughsted from the ordeal. As was she, "if you named the son you delivered, my lord." Medina had a name at some point. Though she was feeling sentimental and hoped that at least in some small way he'd been thinking of his child. Medina wasn't expecting him to, though mostly she just wanted to sleep now.

Calent hadn't expected this, and the silence lasted longer than intended. But it was someone else that breathed the name that was to stay.

"Hope."

It was a young priestess that worked for the church.

"On such a day, it's what we all need..." she murmured, sorely embarrassed as she dropped her gaze to the floor, and flinching as if expecting a flogging. For a while, Calent stared between mother and child and repeated the name.

"Hope."
And it seemed his son already knew to whom he was addressing, as he turned to his father with his bright eyes of green.

"Hope," Medina repeated, eyes drifting closed. A jolt of panic set in and she pushed Hope towards Calent, arms weak. Once the child was firmly back in his fathers arms she felt the world go dark and heavy, head tipping back an her long dark hair pooling behind her. Medina had fallen into an exaughsted sleep when she probably should have been at her most alert, though even that couldn't keep her awake.

Not expecting the woman to so easily hand back her child, or even then so- to suddenly pass out on the floor; Calent kept his cool, pressing the child close to him as he commanded order.
"Tend to her quickly and with care. SHe must have been weak from child birth. Be quick to clean the mess and the woman..." He eyed her unmoving form with a frown.
"Bring her with me."

"And the child?" the priest asked, curiousity sparkling inside his eyes.

Calent looked down to the babe, the back to the priest.
"I will take him for now." And he bowed before the priest. "At your blessing."

The priest chuckled. "But of course. Let us be quick. I shall bless the child and you can be on your way. and See to it to treat this woman right.S he has given us a great gift this day." He chuckled again. "Hope!"

The holy water was brought forth and the child welcomed to the church by its first bath, and soon was swaddled in small clothes and returned to the Grand Duke, who made haste back to the palace, where woman and child were left quietly to their devices while... Well...
The Grand Duke had much to explain to his wife.

Medina smoothed a hand over her stomach, a little personal ritual when she woke up. The first thing that set in though was fear and panic when she didn't feel the familiar bump. Instantly she sat up, hair loose and she looked around. The plush bed and grand room weren't even noticed, though the cooing from beside the bed caught her attention.

Her son.

Hope.

Medina tossed her hair over her shoulder and crawled to the side of the bed. Looking down at the little baby before she picked him up, pulling her clothing to the side to bare her breast. Cradling him to her while he ate. Simply she stared at him, her finger tracing his little cheeks and his dark hair.

"Hi, Little One," she whispered, looking up quickly when the door closed only to see a maid beside the door.

"His Lordship requested we let him know when you've awoken," her voice was soft and gentle, trying not to alert the hungry baby. Just as quickly she was on her way to tell the Grand Duke his guests woke up.

Medina just gave a confused nod before she turned back to her child, finger tracing his features and gently holding his tiny perfect hand. While he ate, she was oblivious to little else and she sat on the plush bed, humming her lullaby and examining her child with a gentle smile on her face.

When the Grand Duke returned, he came alone- and quiet. He saw the vision of mother and child and dare not disturb it, but remained in the doorway, eyes lingering on the pair.

It wasn't until she switched sides did she notice someone in the doorway. The humming stopped and she stared at him for a few moments. Swallowing carefully her eyes went wide before she looked down at Hope. "He looks a lot like his father," she commented idly, gently biting her lip before it bloomed into a bright smile again, gazing at her child.

"He has his eyes," a small smile to Calent and she shuffled to the edge of the bed. "When I'm done feeding him, would you like to hold him?"

He didn't like where she was going with her implications, but he did not advance towards her- or even answer her replies. Though at her suggestion, his eyes narrowed, if not, softened all but briefly.

"I think the mother deserves to hold him for a while. You've been through a lot."
Not to mention the street singers and news zingers would not stop talking about Reajh's 'Hope'.

Medina gave a little nod, shuffling back from the edge of the bed. Just as cold as ever, though she tried to smile through it. Again she ignored the Grand Duke to set her attentions on her baby, quite finished with his meal before she pulled him away and held him to her chest, patting his back. She realized then that she wasn't aching or in as much pain as she probably should be.

"Can I go home?" Her voice was soft and she looked at him. "I know you don't want me here," though she smiled when she looked down at her son. "Probably have to explain things you don't want to. Or come up with some good excuses."

Frowning, he said nothing for a time before walking over to her bed side. The baby was calm, and content it seemed. He gently ran a feather light stroke of his fingers over the babies cheek. And he found himself staring at the child, but still- he said nothing.

The child stared back and before long one tiny fist was wrapped around the finger and promptly directed to his mouth. Medina gave a quiet giggle before adjusting Hope, cradling him in her arms. A son. She had a son.

In the church.

Medina frowned slightly, trailing her fingers over him again while his eyes dropped closed and he fell asleep with his fathers finger firmly planted in his mouth. "I think he likes you."

There was just the softest hint to his features when he replied, "Or he likes the taste of my thumb."

Medina's voice got softer when she noticed Hope had drifted off, CALENTS thumb still in his mouth.  A small smile and she closed her own eyes for a moment. If it had been a different setting this moment would have been perfect. A loving husband to give children too, instead of an accidental night of passion. Still, gazing down at her son, golden eyes swimming with a love she'd never had for anyone before, Medina wouldn't have changed a thing. "I'm sure he'll love you for more than the taste of your thumb someday," it was an idle comment, the words not thought out.

Such an expression made him falter, his own heart fluttering at the thought. Strange how the woman's sweet, motherly grace made him feel... Well, feel anything at all.
"You will have to tell him the truth, someday," he murmured softly, eyes still ont he child.
Title: Re: Hope is Born

Medina stared down at Hope, smiling all the same before she played with the fluff of fine dark hair on his head. "What if he knew? Growing up." A brief look outside and she turned back, eyes only for her child. "I can't imagine suddenly learning your origins would lead to good things." Hope's eyes opened and he resumed suckling on CALENTS thumb, giving his father a doe eyed look before his eyes drifted closed again. "Now that he's here... I... I only want the best for him, even if I don't like it."

At that, Calent frowned.
"What's best.... You'd have to give him up."
What's best.
Clearly it was to take his post..

Give him up.

Medina felt her heart breaking at the very idea and she pressed a gentle kiss to Hope's forehead before she stared down at the little life they'd created. The person she's been most excited to meet. The only person in the whole world she'd loved before she even saw their face. "Right now?" Concern was in her voice and she smoothed a finger over Hope's cheek, accidentally bumping hands with the Duke.

Tensing, he kept his frown, eyes never leaving the child's sleeping form.
"If you wait..." he went on, a hand itching to take her's. "It will only make it harder."
He paused, staring at her hand now.
"You should hear what all of Reajh is saying about the child."

Swallowing heavily she felt tears well in her eyes. Maybe she'd been lying. Medina didn't want to leave her child. A life like this though. Medina turned to stare at Calent for a moment before her finger trailed over a tiny cheek again. "Saying about..." Medina frowned, "Why. He's perfect. Why would..." Another pause, "I didn't tell anyone anything. I swear I didn't tell anyone who the father is." Panic rose like bile in her throat and she snuggled Hope closer.

His hand found her's. His touch, gentle.
"Medina..." He gave pause, voice gentle, but he felt strange knowing and uttering her name.
"They know nothing but what took place inside the church. Your child.... Our.... Hope, has become a symbol to the city- and no doubt, the entire kingdom with time."

Her name on his lips had her shiver and she swallowed heavily, looking down at his hand on hers and she stared between him and Hope. "A symbol? Why... How." Though she turned her head, "I didn't..." Medina closed her eyes, face having fallen. Everything felt bittersweet and she let her head fall, her long hair falling from her shoulder to drape around her arm.

"I didn't want things to turn out like this." She whispered, turning back to Hope, pressing her lips to his forehead, "I was supposed to have you at home. With my brother. Run away and keep you forever," she whispered against his head, voice soft before she gave a watery look to the Duke. "His skin is too much like mine to belong to your wife," Medina said softly, a quiet little observation.

Calent stayed silent, and watched her. Emotions were such a broad thing on a woman's face. Though still.. he couldn't help but... feel something tighten within his gut. Or perhaps his heart.
The hand on her's lifted to brush a tear away. nd he simply stared at her, not saying a word.

"You could both stay here," he said quietly. His thumb still brushed over her cheek.
"WHen you came to the church... what.. had you expected?"
She was so far along with child....
Why come there? Of all places...
And with him.. the crowd..
The one's she CLAIMED she wanted to avoid.

Medina looked away, a little bashful at his thumb on her cheek. A touch far more intimate than she was expecting from him, who seemed so cold and distant. His question had her blush and she dipped her head down to look into wide green eyes. Hope had woken up and she curled his hand around a finger, gazing down at him. The whole world melted away when she looked down.

"I wanted to see. I wanted to... To tell him the story of the grand church... " Medina sighed, "I shouldn't have. My brother warned me I could have him at any day I just... Didn't expect it. I thought they were just little twinges but... I guess I realize now that it was me going into labour." Medina pursed her lips before she frowned, Hope grew fussy, his face about to crumple up and go red but quickly enough she bared her breast and the baby began to suckle. She paid no mind to Her Stranger and simply ran her hand up and down the child's back.

Swallowing slightly she cast a brief glance to the side, cheeks going slightly red, "I wanted to see you, too."

He watched his child nurse. It was a serene and beautiful sight.
"You could stay.." he whispered. "Other men... have taken on lovers. The country knows I need an heir... And they would approve to have the mother of Hope be the vessel for... more of my children."

Medina's chest went hollow and she held Hope closer to her. The phrasing was interesting. A vessel for more of his children. Her golden eyes flicked up to his and she stared at him for a moment, going quiet until the only thing making noise was the child nursing. "More?" A look to him, face straight, though confusion flickered in her eyes.

The quickness of the reply caught her off guard. Hundreds of questions filtered through her mind and she just stared at him for a long time before she stroked Hope's cheek, gazing down at him before she pulled him away from her breast and fixed her clothing. A sleepy smack of his lips and she wiped milk from his mouth and pat at his back until he let out a little burp. Medina rubbed at the childs back, casting another look to the Duke.

"Would you like to ..." Medina swallowed, cast a look around the room before she quietly finished her question, "Hold your son?"

"Indeed I would." But he would wait for her to initiate it. He still felt the child belonged to her- even if it had been created of his seed- and one stormy night.

Medina brightened considerably, giving Calent a bright smile before she moved closer, passing Hope into his arms. "He's beautiful," Medina said idly, looking at him like he was the most precious thing in the world. And he was, to her. Her hand fuzzed over the top of Hope's head and she just gazed at him, eyes full of love. Heart full to bursting. "You've had children before, have you ever felt so full of love you could burst?"

He wasn't sure what she meant- or that he had ever felt that sensation. But as he held his son he did feel something.

"Such feelings are to be expected of a mother and her first child."

Medina smiled at his little personal explanation.

"A mother and any of her children, I should hope." Medina couldn't keep away, pressing against Calent arm, leaning to look at her child. She radiated an aura of 'I made this,' and she grinned to him. Grinned wider when Hope made little gurgling noises, testing out his new limbs and flailing his little fists.

Gently she but her lip, pulling away after she realized she was pressed against Calent. Looking down for a few moments, "if it's best for Hope. We'll stay." A gentle shake of her head and soon enough Hope was again asleep. "I've already caused you enough trouble, I imagine going out in public with him would only cause more."

"No one... has to know he's... mine. However.. if I... am so bold, and make claims... we can.. assume.." he went on, studying the calm, sleeping face of his son. "Perhaps his... father' died in battle.... Adoption is not uncommon... with men of means with no male to carry on their name. ANd because he's already made a name for himself..... It can be known that he's my.... son, in that regards."

Medina stared at him for a long while. Watching him watch his son. It was a strange emotion that bubbled in her gut. Medina looked to him. Her stranger. It made sense in a weird way. No one would have to know. "My Stranger is dead then?" She said softly, growing sad at the thought. Sad at the thought of an imaginary person being dead.

"If you think that's best." Medina licked her lips, "what if your wife has a son? What happens to Hope then?"

Gazing down at her son, Medina traced her finger against his cheek before looking at the man beside her. While she should probably be looking at the Grand Duke, all she saw was the rain soaked man from their night together. The quiet stoic man who played the piano. Brought her to bed and she was fairly sure he had kissed her forehead.

"Do you want more children by me?" Medina decided to be blunt, not sure what answer she was looking for.

Her bluntness caught her off guard, but he assumed so did his suggestion.
"Yes." a woman willing to do so, and one he felt comfortable enough with, was rare.

Yes.

Medina quickly looked away, down at the ground while memories flooded her head. Their night together. The passion. Would any future encounters be like that, she wondered. Medina found herself blushing and she at her chest for a moment. She'd just had a baby. Gave the Grand Duke a son, why not be bold? "Can it be like our night together?" Medina's voice went low, casting a quick glance to the sleeping Hope.

They'd made one acceptionally handsome child. Medina assumed any others would be just as beautiful. Medina's voice got breathy and she stared at him for a few moments, "can I kiss you?"

Bold.

The notion was too bold, and his icy reply would remind her just that.

"I'm not asking you to become a lover. You should remember your place. Just because you are asked to bear more children, it is out of duty, and duty alone."
Title: Re: Hope is Born

Medina just grinned, looking to Calent and then down to Hope. "We weren't lovers the night we made him," she pointed out, smirking. A tilt of her head, she shuffled back on the bed, away from the Grand Duke and her son, looking thoughtful. "You're right though, I should remember my place."

A Mage.

A twin.

An unwedded mother.

The Grand Duke's accidental whore.

Medina pulled her hair over her shoulder and tilted her head, idly braiding her hair. "If we're being blunt and honest, you don't want anything to do with me." Medina smiled, though it was sad, "I can't blame you for that." Going quiet for a few moments, she took a deep breath, staring down at the bed. "Why would you want to lay with me for more children? You don't want to. So... Why? Why do that to yourself?" A tilt of her head, curious.

Such questions were trying.
"Do you known to whom you ask such questions?"
Honestly, this woman was too bold for her own good.
"And my wife and I aren't getting any younger. You seem to be able to carry a child well. You should know well enough the value someone in my position having a son."
Title: Re: Hope is Born
Post by: Draconian on November 12, 2015, 05:08:15 PM
Do you know to whom you ask such questions?

Medina wanted to laugh.

She just squeezed a human out of her vagina.

Being bold wasn't the only thing she was feeling.

Licking her lips she took a careful little breath, examining the Grand Duke. "I just squeezed your son out of my vagina, I'll ask you anything I want as long as my bits still ache," Medina snapped, "Doesn't mean you have to answer anything. Which you won't anyway." Shaking her head her head with a humourless laugh, lifting her knees to her chin to watch him hold Hope. For a few seconds she'd almost thought he was human, but apparently asking him something that made him uncomfortable turned him into a statue again.

Curiosity had her question if this was what his position made him.

Would he have been such a stoic cold man if he was a farmer?

Probably not.

"I would like to sleep now, Your Highness." Medina looked down and away, crawling under the sheets and presenting the Grand Duke her back.

Still holding Hope, he kept quiet, studying the child as he began to sleep in his arms. Not wanting to rouse him, he figured he'd wait a bit before passing off the babe. But it seemed Hope was right comfortable in his arms, and eventually, when he believed Medina may have fallen asleep, he took a place on a chair nearby.

AN hour passed, but still the child slept. The weight of the day was heavy on him, and eventually...
The Grand Duke fell asleep too, child nestled in close to his shoulder and cheek.

Medina woke up with a start.

She hadn't actually meant to fall asleep.

Hair a wild dark mess she was quick to sit up, hands pressed against the bed before she stared at the empty bassinet. Medina wasn't sure if she'd ever felt a fear quite like what she felt jolt through her and for a few moments she felt her fingers tingle. Though the sound of breathing calmed her down almost instantly and she stared, wide eyed at Hope and Calent, asleep on a chair.

Both sound asleep.

And it broke Medina's heart.

Because the man cuddling her child shouldn't be some stranger that didn't care about her.

The tears were silent, the loudest thing being her little quiet breaths as she pressed her hands to her face. What a mess she'd gotten herself into. Grabbing a pillow, Medina curled up around it as close to the edge of the bed as she dared and watched the pair sleep, though as soon as Hope began to fuss she closed her eyes and quickly pretended to be asleep.

Calent's brow furrowed. His grip on the child came tighter as he groggily peered down at the fussing baby. It didn't take long for the child to begin to cough, and soon Hope was wailing, tears i his eyes. He peered over at Medina.

Asleep. He wasn't sure how she could still remain so when her child was so near and crying. He stood up and began to make his way towards the door way and called for a wet nurse. It was best to let the woman sleep. She had had a long day.

Medina snapped her eyes open when she heard Calent move, standing behind him when he finally made it to the hall. Walking made her legs ache but she wouldn't let some stranger feed her child. Groggy looking herself, hair a long tangled mess.

"I can feed him," she said, voice soft, pressing her hands under CALENTS arm, feeling Hopes little warm body. Gently she took him in her arms, red faced and wailing. Back to the door, Medina made her way to the still warm chair, sat in it and fed her son. For a few fleeting moments, the world and her problems melted away.

Medina stared down at Hope, suckling and for the first time that day she grinned. Looking down at the little life she's nourished. The person she'd been most excited to ever meet, right there in her arms. "Thank you," Medina finally said, turning to Calent before she just resuming smiling down at her favourite person.

Calent said nothing but simply watched her and her child.

Sleep wouldn't come. He was fortunate enough no nightmares had sprouted when he had held his son. Even still, the lullaby remained inside his head, and he made his way to his music room where the soft ballad he began was now echoing softly down the hall.

The nap had woken Medina up. Naturally she was a fast healer and while there were still aches and pains for the most part, she was fine. Once Hope was fed and back fast asleep Medina's eyes drifted closed, her child resting against her breast while the sound of music echoed. A gentle frown and she sat up, fixed her clothing and snuggled Hope close while she went to investigate.

Oh right.

The Grand Duke was a man of a few secret talents  and Medina found herself in the door way before long, swaying side to side with Hope in her arms and listening to him play. It was almost enchanting, the music and before long she was leaning against a wall with her eyes closed, a little smile on her face. Mostly she had just come to see, sneak a peak even, but the music was so lovely she Medina had forgotten to leave.

And then the song ended, notes drifting away. He knew she was there, but didn't bother to look. He simply kept his eyes glued to the ivory keys and waited.

Hope was fast asleep, his steady little breaths and his tiny chest risig and falling.

Medina had hardly noticed the music stop and for a moment she felt shame. Clearly he was here to hae a moment alone and she'd rudely intruded. "You play beautifully," she said quietly. Of course he knew that already. A man like him, his ego to the moon and back.

"Do you want me to leave?" Medina waited, steeling herself for some snarky responce. They'd never be lovers, she knew that, but at the very least she wanted to be friendly.

"I was listening," a tilt of her head. Medina tried not to look hurt, but a cocktail of hormones had her on all the edges at once. Looking around briefly she looked down at the ground, "am I not allowed in here?" She asked quietly, chewing on her lower lip. "Can I have a list of places I'm not allowed to be before you get mad at me for being there?"

It was only then he turned from his piano and looked at her. His gaze was ice cold, and his reply, simple.
"You are to remain in your room and nothing more." And with that, he stood.

Was that a joke?

Medina stared at him, confused. Angry.

"I don't understand. Are you saying that because I've just had a child or... You're uncomfortable with me wandering around?" Sure she could see why, sort of. A little bit. Medina would sooner smuggler her son to Adela than stay in a bedroom.

"Does the reason matter. You're my guest," he reminded, his words still showing no ounce of warmth.
Title: Re: Hope is Born

It grated on her nerves.

Medina bit back the words. She didn't know him. They weren't friends. He didn't want friends. He'd gotten his accidental son and that was it. Medina knew she mattered little, except perhaps as just another good source for his son.

"Of course, My apologies." An incline of her head because curtsying with a baby seemed like trouble.

As soon as she could be out and about without raising eyebrows... Medina looked down at Hope and then back at the Duke. Perhaps that man she'd made love with in the rain was some strange personality, hidden under layers of ice.

The sigh was unintentional but the quiet noise of her bare feet while she wandered back to the room she was allowed to stay in echoed through the empty hall until finally Calent was alone and Hope and Medina were back in their beds.

The mood was soured, and any music in him had died. But still, he remained in his music room- one of his few rooms for reprieve, until the candles had all but burned out and he- he had unintentionally fallen asleep against one propped up arm.
Title: Re: Hope is Born

Medina, being who she was and what she was - stubborn and perhaps foolhardy- tucked Hope into his bed and went and sat in her own. At least for a few minutes. Medina got up again and slowly tiptoed back to the music room. Angry, Medina was building herself up, ready to just be angry.

Except when she got back into the music room, Calent was asleep and she stood there and stared at him. Frowning ever so slightly. It wasn't a fair situation, for either of them. So, Medina turned back around, walking just as quietly to get a blanket she'd seen sitting on one of the chairs.

And as she'd move, she might hear the subtle sounds of sobbing, and the form of Calent trembling.

Medina felt her heart stop and oh so slowly she turned around, concern bubbling up from her belly. Was he crying? A few steps closer, trying to be quiet. Was it a nightmare? Did the day catch up and Calent was having a breakdown? Should she talk? Smoothing the nightgown against her stomach, Medina stepped closer, her voice soft. "Are you okay?" Her voice was soft, reaching a hand out to gently hover over his shoulder, trying her best to be soothing. If she wasn't so terrified of being sent to a camp she'd try something more.
Title: Re: Hope is Born

No response came, and one of Calent's legs moved; twitched and he turned suddenly towards the voice, a powerful hand shooting out and grabbed her by the wrist. But it was evident the Grand Duke was still sleeping, sweat beading across his brow, as his eyes roamed beneath closed lids.

Medina stared down at the hand at her wrist, letting out a startled gasp. A nightmare. Was it dangerous to wake them up? Medina reached out with her other hand and gently pressed it to his cheek, still calm. What sort of night terror was he having that he was still moving?

"You have to wake up now. You're having a nightmare."

Calm.

Medina's breath hitched and she moved her hand to the one at her throat. Sleep walking? The growl was strange and she tried to pull at the hand at her throat. What was going on?

"Wake up. Please?." He could kill her. Well, he could kill her if she let him.  What could she do? Her hand tapped at his arm in some small effort to shake him of his dream. Though, judging from the growl she wasn't really sure what was going on anymore.

Teeth flashed- bold and sharp, and it was hard to tell if his eyes were even open, for is they were, there was a sickening absence of his pupils, and no veins bulged or were seen, like the one's on his throat. The snarl grew more feral as he slammed her against the piano, the keys springing up in a soured chord.

A glass vase nearby shattered, water flooding down towards them from atop of the piano, bringing sharp shards raining between the pair before his strong hand returned it's grip to her throat and held her harder and harder, determined to squeeze the very breath of her just as the wild winds of an oncoming storm fluttered open the curtains to the music room which snuffed all candles of light.

What was he?

Medina didn't have time to think about it because then he was choking her and she was scratching at his hand.  A case shattered and then it was dark and Medina pushed against him. Was he human? Medina beat at his arms, vision going dark. Her golden eyes rolled up and her hands pressed more keys, though it was went she went limp, face red from lack of air. The piercing wail of a baby, awaken so rudely by bad music down the hall.

A frantic movement, where she clutched at the front of his shirt before she went limp, Hope's cries echoing through the room as surely as the wind blew through it.

It was the cry of the child that sobered him, the cry of the child and the sudden flash of thunder. Somehow it was raining, pouring into the room in buckets and Calent and the woman laying limp beneath him were soaked.

His eyes wavered, mind whirling as he stepped back suddenly.

What had he done?

His vision was foggy, fading, the room tilting as he stumbled.

Was this some kind of a dream?
Title: Re: Hope is Born

It was completely unintentional. The water and Medinas natural affinity to healing had her eyes snap open and she gasped for air, a hand flying to her throat. Eyes wide she held her throat and breathed deep a few times, panting for breath. It was too late that she realized she should probably had a raw throat and strange marks on her neck. Instead she just stared, still leaning on the piano.

Like she was hypnotized she stared at his face. What was he?

Hope crying was a far away noise and she pressed a hand to her chest, staring. This man was the ruler of Connlaoth and he'd nearly killed her in his... Sleep?

A brief glance over her shoulder to the door, a little tremble and a look back at him, eyeing him up and down. "Are you awake now?" Medina tried to sound husky, better suited to having been choked.

Calent looked at her for the longest time as the howling breath of the now dying storm's breath purred into a rumble that shook the floors gently and nearly drowned out the cries of the babe. He blinked, once, twice, before blood began to seep out from his nose, and he turned away suddenly, vomiting onto the floor.

"Oh my God." Medina acted quickly, grabbing the bottom of her night dress and crouching down beside Calent. Gently she rubbed his back, frowning and giving her head a gentle shake. It was a subtle push of her magic. To sooth. The subtleties her twin and she put into the fabric that wrapped the wounds of the hurt.

"Do you have a headache? Does your chest hurt?" Her hand didn't stop and she still had the bottom of her dress gathered up, ready to help seep up the blood from his nose. It wouldn't do well for the Grand Duke to be hurt around her.

Calent was all but choking on his vomit- vomit that turned into a murky resemblance of...
"Blood..." His hand shook as he looked at it, sobering and shivering as he saw enough of it from the faint light of the night.

His mind still reeled, and he tried to figure out just what had occurred but he was too weak to do much, let alone stand from where he now knelt within his own blood and vomit. He gave a sniff, wiping away the tickling blood on his nose before asking weakly, "Why are you here?"

"Are you human?"

Calent was taken off guard by such a comment, and his confusion and anger were evident on his face against the flash of lightning. As the thunder faded into a rumble, he scowled, "The child.. he's crying."
And indeed, Hope still wailed.

A swift change of topic.

"He is," she confirmed before shaking her head, "babies do that." Medina rubbed at her collar bone before she started to back away, "he's safe in his bed." Medina watched Calent, confusion and worry on her face.

"Do you need help? Should I call someone for you? Would you like to lay down? I could sleep on the chair." She indicated down the hall, frowning at him before stepping up and away.

"Do you not hear our child cry?!" he asked, voice raised.
Title: Re: Hope is Born

Our child. The slip of tongue didn't go passed her but she didn't say anything.

"Hope is fine! He's not bleeding and he didn't just throw up! Just... I can't leave you alone. Come with me to the bedroom and we'll... Take care of you." Medina didn't really want to be close to this man but he was potentially hurt. Had no recollection of why had happened - which was for the best - the unconscious healing from being choked was a dead give away of what she was.

What was he though?

Medina pressed her hands to her head, "please. Just... Come with me to the room. We can check on Hope and you can sit down. Please? Please? I'll help you." She held out her hand, looking a little worried. If she left him alone, would he said she tried to kill him? Fed him bits of the vase? The water made the night dress cling and she gave a shiver. She'd have to change before comforting the baby or he might catch a chill.

Dizzy, he shrugged her off with a growl.
"Our child wails yet you remain foolish. Do you want me to take him from you and your ineptitude?!" And he paused, growling. "Go to him now. That's an order!" Shakingly, he found the strength to stand as he told her coldly, "Your Grand Duke commands it."

Inepti--!

Medina glared at him, casting another look at his mouth and eyes before she swallowed back the word she wanted to snap at him.

"Of course," she snarled, "my apologies." The tone of the words were easily translated into 'fuck you.' Medina walked away as quietly as she'd gone into the room, leaving him bloody and with vomit on the floor and just as the Grand Duke commanded she quickly changed clothing and went to Hope who wailed on for a few moments before she did the same back rubbing motion as she'd earlier to the Grabd Duke. To sooth.

Hope quieted down quickly enough, though he was wide awake again.

Medina moved into the chair the Duke and Hope had fallen asleep in earlier and nursed her child. Trying to sort the strange pieces of the puzzle she acquired tonight. What an insufferable man. Medina eventually fell asleep, as Hope did nuzzled against her chest. The only evidence that she's left the room was the wet nightgown and her damp hair. There were no bruises on her neck and the only proof she had of Calent growing fangs and trying to kill her were her memories.

What was he?

The night went on uneventfully after that, though some might have had little rest than others. However, even as the sun rose, there was no sign of the Grand Duke, or any word from him. But the servants tending to Medina and Hope were still going about their business, helping where they could and should, and keeping relatively to themselves.

Medina touched her neck, remembering the night before. No one spoke of any mess in the music room and no questions had been asked about the discarded night gown. Or why she'd woken up in chair with her breast hanging out and Hope sleeping against her. That was a little embarrassing but nothing comparing to the birthing.

Still she knew she was supposed to be bed bound. A regular woman wouldn't have recovered so quickly and Medina did little other than tend to her child and pretend to be sore and achy from the birth.

Thinking.

What was he.

Medina wanted her sister. Medina cast a look towards Hope and wondered just what he'd inherited from his father and if that included fangs and nightmares.

It was too quiet and finally, Medina had enough of it.

"Excuse me," She started, having actually gotten herself into a dress - a loose fitting one, sure - but a dress.

"Were there any instructions for me to not go anywhere?" Medina had a lovely view outside the window and knowing she wouldn't be here forever, wanted to steal away a few moments, perhaps bundle Hope up and take him for his first breath of fresh air. So far it'd been a new church or a fancy bedroom. It wasn't sunny but it also wasn't raining, which meant it was fair game.

"I'd really like to go outside," She pointed to the window, "It's looks lovely."

THe maid blinked at Medina.

"You wish to leave the castle?" she asked, as if the woman were crazy, or speaking another language. "Oh, we're under strict orders," she went on. "The Grand Duke himself said to be sure you remain here, where it's safe with the baby."

Medina tried to smile, but the jolt of displeasure flashed across her features.

"Out there," She pointed to the window, "Right out there isn't safe?" she pressed a hand to her mouth and looked thoughtful, "Goodness. If right there isn't safe why is in here any safer?" Medina waved her hand and gave the maid an apologetic look, "Right. Can I at least have a book? Or... Or ... some charcoal and paper?" Medina looked around the room, "The baby sleeps and when he doesn't sleep he's either crying or eating. It's... boring."

At that, the maid chuckled.
"Deary- this is your first child now is it? Get used to it. Boring, in my opinion, is better than exhaustion. Believe it- I had twins!"

Medina blinked and looked down at Hope.

"I..." she finger combed her hair, looking down at herself, feeling silly. "Yes. Alright. Boring is better than exhaustion." Slowly she flashed the maid an apologetic smile before she went and sat beside the window. At least she could look at it. "Was there anything about not allowing me to go home? I'm sure my brother's been informed of my whereabouts but... I'd much rather be at home at my house than..." Looking around, "Somewhere unfamiliar."

With a man who wasn't a man. What if he'd slept what? Would he have choked Hope? Medina's fingers moved to drift up to her neck to press at the flesh. The flesh that should be bruised. What a day.

The woman titled her head before smiling.
"I think you leaving is at the Grand Duke's request. He is busy as usual. I'd just be patient, dear. But as long as you're waiting, is there anything else I can get for you? YOu know we do have a library here, very vast. I'm sure you'd be alright to visit it, accompanied, while myself or another maid wait on the babe."

A library?

Medina perked up and looked down for a moment.

"Would that be okay?" A look towards Hope, in the middle of a nap. His little chest rising and falling. a gentle bite of her lower lip. "I'm not used to doing so little," she admitted. "I don't want to burden you anymore than I already have. Do I have to leave the books there or could I bring one back?"

Medina blushed and ducked her head down. Of course. Library.

"Of course..." A quiet voice and she gave a lingering look towards Hope and smiled at the maid. It was like having a real conversation with someone, "Could I do that then? Go to the library? You said I needed to be accompanied. which ... Makes sense." She looked out the doorway to the hall, "I'd get lost... Very quickly. I imagine everyone would think I had run away."

Medina gave a sigh of relief before going over to Hope to gaze down at him.

Maybe she'd try to find a book about ... Folklore. Fairy tales.

Something about night terrors so bad they turned you into a literal monster. Would the Grand Duke's library have something like that? Medina bit her lip, trailing her finger gently over Hope's head while she waited patiently.

What a day. What a week.

Medina desperately wanted to go home but she knew that if she tried to leave, her son wouldn't be coming with her through no choice of her own.

Nellie was a young thing, probably younger than Medina and appeared rather washed out with her blonde hair, eyelashes and pale skin. She guided her to the library, no problem, being as polite, and quiet, as she could and once the pair entered, she gestured out.

"The Grand Duke's library.... should you desire to know where a specific book is, there's a catalog in those drawers over there.
Title: Re: Hope is Born

Medina cast a look to the catalog area before she gave a polite smile and nod to Nellie. Hope would be fine.

A gentle rub at her neck and she tried to recall when he'd... Turned into. It hadn't been a trick of her sight. That had been him. What sort of monster was he? A gentle bite of her lip and she went looking through the catalog, hoping against the odds that there would be something, anything, about night creatures.

Storm monsters.

Gathering a good number of books she went to a table and placed them down, giving them all a brief look through before she found the most interesting one and returned the rest to their rightful place. A gentle gnaw of her lips when she gathered the book, "Could I bring this back with me? I don't want to leave Hope alone for too long." A pause, "I'll return it before tomorrow!"

"I don't," Medina held the book tight, trying to obscure what it was about. She wasn't being silly about this right? That hadnt been the duke last night. A simple gnaw of her lip and she tried to smile, "i'd like to get used to being a mother between chapters."

Nellie nodded. "Very well, shall we return you to your room?" But as the maid turned, she froze and then immediately bowed down low.

"Your Grace."

And she was directing that at the Grand Duke, who now stood in the doorway to the library.

The maid obscured her view of the Grand Duke until she bowed down low and Medina frowned for a moment before she remembered to do that too. Putting on the slightest of shows of discomfort - she did just birth a child even though she had recovered already.

Her fingers pressed along her neck and she looked at the Grand Duke after she straightned back up. All she saw were fangs and anger. A careful little breath and she clutched the book tighter, heart picking up in pace. "Your Grace," she finally echoed before cssting a golden eyed look to the maid and tried to shuffle forward, eyes cast to the ground.

Medina visibly deflated, shoulders drawing in slightly. Mostly she wanted privacy to read. Take notes. Sort of. Medina gave a tired little nod, "of course. Though, i know you've never been to a public one - being who you are - other libraries let you borrow books." She turned around and found a chair with a small table and burried her face into the book.

He watched her carefully.
"I've been to many libraries." He moved to step past her, towards the history section of the library, which was still in view. "I much prefer to have my books owned by my own hands, and close to them." He pulled a book out and began to flip through the first few pages.
Title: Re: Hope is Born

Medina gave a quick little breath and held it when he went past her. A few quick glances to the book of creatures before she closed it and quietly put it away. Before he'd annoyed her but now he frightened her. It would be rude and suspicious if she just left. It was a library - though not a public one - so no doubt His Grace would get pissy at her for talking to him.

A brief glance over her shoulder and she let out a careful breath.

Was she supposed to talk?

Nah.

Medina rubbed her bare hands, clammy and cold against her skirts and made her way - again - for the exit. It was strange, seeing a nightmare creature in a humans clothes act so normally. Another glance and she cleared her throat before she just couldn't help herself.

Careful steps towards the table he sat at and she stood across from his table. "Do you suffer from night terrors?"

Calent wasn't paying much attention to her, but neither was he paying much attention to the book. He was thankful when she began to leave, but when she turned around to confront him, he paused a moment before closing the book.

"Everyone knows my sleep is greatly compromised," he told her coldly.

Well that was good.

A moments pause and she smiled at him. As cold as he was and as cold as he wanted to be, Medina couldn't do it back - at least not at first. Perhaps it was the healer in her. It drew her to the iceblock and it made her want to make better. Not going to happen though so she swallowed, rubbed her abdomen and tried to smile. "Everyone? Well, thankgoodness I'm not part of everyone. They're so stuffy and always dress just a little too fancy." It was under her breath and she gave another nod.

"Of course, Your Grace, well. Good luck on sleeping then, it's unfortunate that sleep is needed by the human body so, isn't it?" she looked away and didn't want for some snappy answer, instead she trailed off, rolling her shoulders and letting out a sigh before she wandered off this time for good. Bookless but at least there was that strange cooing baby being cared for she could go back to.

It hurt.

Medina stopped outside the door and pressed a hand to her chest, taking in quiet slow breaths.

Why did it hurt that he didn't like her?

She birthed him a son, sure. It was an accidental pregnancy and if she'd known who he was, she'd have never told him. Would have kept it a secret. Would have had her child and lived with her brother. Sister. They would have left Connlaoth and gone to live in Serendipity. Maybe found family in Adela.

Medina sighed and closed her eyes before she let out another shaky breath.

Later. Tomorrow. Maybe a few days. She'd take Hope and go home. Even if she had to sneak out.

Or at least that was the plan.

Collecting herself, her books left behind, she made her way back to the room and found the maid with Hope, the baby cooing, content with his human plaything. Medina smiled at the kindly maid, took Hope who simply remained cooing, bared her breast and fed he suckled.

Medina sat at a chair by the window, looking out at it while she fed her child, concern in her chest.

Back to the mystery at hand.

What was the Duke? Why had he turned into a monster?

And how could she fix it? Did he know?

Would he let her tell him?

Medina looked down at Hope, a finger caressing his face gently while he ate.

Would Hope turn into a monster, too?

It was easy to drift off with her child at her breast, hair tumbled over her shoulder and, eventually, they were both asleep with the soft sunlight coming in through the window.

Her dreams might have been her only reprieve, and the coldness given to her by the Grand Duke himself might even be seen as a blessing; but the activity in the hall was urgent as another woman slipped into the room to speak with Medina's personal maid.

"The woman and child.. are they safe?"

The woman, though she spoke in a whisper, had a sense of urgency that could be sensed through all. The maid stood up and crossed the room quickly.

"What do you mean, safe? Has something happened?"

The look told it all.

"Something's happened... the Grand Duke-" And her eyes turned towards the child as Hope began to wail.

Medina jolted awake, eyes wide, sitting up quickly and looking down at the wailing babe in her arms.

What?

"Shhhh," she hushed softly, fingers drifting over his cheeks in the wake of his fat angry tears, "Oh, Hope," Medina looked over, confused, making sure her dress was righted she cuddled Hope close, muffing his sobs against her chest and frowning at the women.

"What's happened?" A tingle ran up her spin and she shifted ever so slightly, turning Hope away from them subtly, shoulders straight, stance ready to move if she needed to.

They turned to Medina, and the woman frowned.

A frown.

Medina felt her heart pick up a beat.

"But-!"

And then the door clicked and the strangely final clunk of the lock.

Medina tucked Hope against her neck and she soothed him with soft noises until he calmed, a gentle wash of her power. Still, she stared at the door, swaying and pacing. Just what was going on?

Locked inside of a room like some naughty child.

"Couldn't you just send me home?" She asked the room, sighing and finally, turning away from the door to stare out the window.

Her maid had remained, quietly standing in the corner. She had no idea herself what was going on, but busied herself to keep from worrying by approaching the woman and her child.
"Is there anything I can help you with, my lady?" Maybe just doing 'normal' things would keep their mind off of.. whatever was keeping the castle frantic.
Title: Re: Hope is Born

Medina chewed on her lip and she cast the maid a curious look, "You could... Oh..." she frowned at the door, "I suppose you couldn't. I can't say I've ever been locked in before." Medina shook her head and Hope gave a little gurgle and she smiled down at her son, "Could you hold him? I..." Medina tried to smile, "I think being held by someone who isn't mother might teach him manners."

Sort of.

Medina mostly wanted to wring her hands - something she couldn't do when holding a child.

But when she tried to pass off the child, Hope wailed so loud, it sounded like he might be dying. And a moment later, there was a rapping on the door. Then the lock being undone, and a white-blonde haired soldier stormed in, sword at the ready.

"My lady... I heard the child scream."
It was a mordecai, with icy blue eyes not unlike the cold demeanor of the Grand Duke himself.

Cold dread washed through her veins and Medina pressed a hand to her chest before the door opened and a solider was in the room. Medina hugged Hope close, making soothing noises and when she grabbed for the power in herself there was nothing.

Bright golden eyes flew to the door and she swallowed carefully.

"Yes, sometimes babies do that. Perhaps he has water in his ears from a bath," Medina swallowed carefully and pressed a kiss to Hope's head, who was red faced from his sobs. Slowly she presented her side and shoulder to the solider, an unconscious effort to protect her child from the bite of a blade. "Is there something wrong?" Gold eyes met icy blue and held steady.

The sigel he bore represented his elite status- one to whom few men could ever have the honor of possessing as a personal guard to the Grand Duke himself. He still kept stiff, observant as he looked around the room then back to the child, who was still crying, albeit not as loud as a moment ago.

"Wrong? That's precisely why I am here," came the man's biting voice. His blue eyes scanned the room. "Are you and the child alright?"

Medina frowned.

"I... Yes?"

Medina looked down at Hope who was giving hiccuping sobs, nuzzling into Medina's chest, pressing his hear against it to - she thought - listen to her heart. "As far as I'm aware I'm alright. I'd very much like to go home with my child but besides that yes, the child and I are quite fine." Another little frown, "Why? Should we be injured?"

His eyes remained narrowed.
"A common question from a common woman."

Her maid moved closer to her side.
"Milady..."

"Do not falsely address her. This woman has no title."

The maid grew quiet as she peered up to see the man's cold eyes were upon her.

"I am Sir Zannrick Austengarde," he said, looking to Medina now. "You'd do well to know that and not to confuse my purpose here." His eyes went to Hope. "I swore a blood oath to protect the Grand Duke.... and all of his blood."

If Medina were a cat, the fur on her back would point straight up and she'd probably hiss at him and turn away.

Still, she frowned, kept her face cool and passive.

"As Hope's mother i deserve to know what exactly it is you think you're protecting him from."
Title: Re: Hope is Born
Post by: visualspice on May 31, 2016, 01:20:34 PM
"A child is not it's mother." And Zannrick walked back towards the door. His eyes scanned the hall before he halted a soldier and commanded, "Help me remove the doors on this room."
He knew it'd be difficult to watch a woman if he couldn't keep his eyes on her- and even more difficult, a child so helpless and young as this. But bastard or not, this was still the Grand Duke's only known son, and if whatever sinister force was attempting to attack the castle from within would sorely regret it if they dared try to cross him.

The doors were removed, set aside and extra guards began to line up around the chamber. Even still, not a single word of what exactly was happening had come up. Just a lot of shouting and people asking if All seemed clear.

Of course, even through the chaos, the loaded question as to "What had become of the Grand Duke" hung heavily in the air when Sir Austengarde was addressed. The man simply remained guarded when he replied,
"Only Ansgar knows his fate now."

Medina just stared, confused. A little hurt at being dismissed so easily. She was sure the gentleman had mothered enough children to say such a statement. "A chi..." a sneer, "Hope has no father so yes. This child is his mothers."

And then she glared, tucked Hope against her chest and sat down beside the window. "Ansgar never was good at his job," she murmured.

It might have seemed strange to her, though not to him, when his blade came to point at her throat, causing alarm with the maid at her side, who nearly fainted.

"Were you unloved as a child?" She just frowned at him, "really." She cast a quick glance at the blade. Hope pulled away, looking at Zannrick with his big eyes before he frowned deeply, went red faced and a rather pungent oder filled the room.

"We can blame that on the guard," Medina quipped, casting the pale haired man a cold look before she brushed the blade away and stood up, carrying Hope to a flat table she'd seen the maid use.

Tying her hair back she went about cleaning the baby up, wrinkling her nose. " heir," she scoffed, "youre just a baby." Then she paused, " who else knows?" She asked over her shoulder, washing Hope down with a wet cloth.

If he cared about her words, he said not a thing, but remained at the forefront, babe in arms and a hand ready on his blade.

People were moving, swiftly, as were the group of men seeking to confine her. But down the halls she was dragged and deeper and deeper still until the group was in the bowels of the palace and Medina, thrust into a cell.

Hope didn't once stop crying during the whole ordeal, and as the cell slammed shut and was locked before her, only then did Zannrick spare a glance in Medina's direction. But as he moved along, she'd be able to see the maid who had been on her side, the shaky little thing, was ushered forward and given the child.

"Quiet the child. We need no more reasons for the monster to hunt after another of his blood."
Title: Re: Hope is Born

Medina stayed quiet, taking quick little breaths. She wanted to go home. She shoukd have stayed home. But no. Childish fantasies clouded her head that day and she went to a church. Had the Grand Duke deliver his son. Sealed her childs fate.

Being pushed into the cell had her land hard on her knees, a grunt of pain before she turned around, looking up at the maid. "Keep him safe," she curled her fingers around the bars, squeezing her eyes shut, "please." And even though she'd never hated anyone so quickly, she supposed she could believe Zannrick and his claim of keeping The Grand Dukes blood safe.

"Shhhh," she reached out a hand, humming a tune, the Adelan lullaby, "shhh little baby," and now that he wasnt against a hard angry chest Hope snuggled up against the maid and quieted down.

Medina sat back on her heels, head down, pressed her hands to her face. "Are you going to kill me?" She asked, voice muffled.

Zannrick cast her a glare.
"And taint my sword? No." He sneered. "The Grand Duke will decide your fate. And if not..." He simply left it at that. His eyes searched the men with him before he gestured to two of them to walk with him and left the others to remain near the doors of the cell where Medina was kept.

And timidly, the maid crept nearer to the cell- but only as close as she dare. Hope was nibbling at the laces on her dress, but the maid said nothing.

And if not?

Medina had to bite her tongue.

The Duke's dog clearly lapped at water given to him and while she'd never had a pet, she knew dogs were loyal to their masters. Medina couldnt quite understand why he detested her. Couldnt really understand why it bothered her.

"Goodbye, my love," she whispered gently while Hope drooled on his keeper, squeezing her eyes shut before turning away. Mordecai with swords. If she tried anything she'd be dead before she started.

"If i'm in a cell why have guards? I know i dont look like a dainty Connlaothian flower but i cant bend a cell door." Besides. It would be embarrassing to sob with an audience.

"Keep faith, milady." the maid soothed, loud as she dared. "Sir Zannrick would not be here without just cause. He works solely by the Grand Duke's command." She shuffled the baby to her other hip. "This is his way to keep you and the babe safe."
Title: Re: Hope is Born

The Grand Duke was trying to steal her son was what was going on.

A careful swallow, not having the heart the argue with the maid who had been so sweet to her. Keep the babe safe, sure, but keep Medina safe? She doubted it. Though she would gladly be a shield between whatever was after the 'Duke's blood' and her little one.

Medina smoothed a hand over her chest and tried to smile at the maid. "I'm sorry you were... dragged into this. Just... I'd rather die than Hope be hurt..." Medina took a few steps back, tucking her hands into the folds of her dress, "I'm sure you're more than capable." Ducking her head down, "I... Suppose I'll see you." And she turned away, presenting her back to the group, not able to watch them leave with her child.

The maid looked around and grew quiet. It seemed the remaining men weren't leaving the front of the cell. Were they waiting for her? Hesitantly she moved to leave but a guard stopped her.
"You are to remain. We all stay here until Sir Austengarde returns."

And at that, the maid stole a glance back to Medina.

Medina turned around, confused.

He left?

Medina frowned, ducking her head down and moved back to the cell door. Just what was going on?  Would these men get angry at her for asking questions?

Probably.

Turned back, pressing against the bars and looking down at the maid and Hope, "Did you know about him?" She said softly, looking at the maid and then back down at Hope.

She looked around cautiously before shaking her head at Medina. Sure, there were suspicions but she was still too naive to be entirely convinced or swayed by all the curious calls of the court.

Medina ducked down her head. Before, Medina just felt like a new mother. There were some interesting circumstances to the birth of her child but beyond that. She smoothed a hand over her belly and then looked at Hope. "I'm sorry. You must think terribly ill of me. I..." a little frown, "i didnt know. Not until I was a few months pregnant and then on the day he was born i was supposed to stay home. My brother told me to not going anywhere."

Medina looked around, closed her eyes. "I really should have stayed home."

THe maid felt awkward on the demand... or rather, the suggestion of it. She shifted uncomfortably, but nodded. Even still, it would be too awkward to oblige her. She was a worker here. Formal names were for acquaintances, families.. and friends of a lower station. She was none of those and she knew it.

And just as it seemed the girl was about to say something, a terrifying noise made all those present hold their breath.
Title: Re: Hope is Born
Post by: Draconian on June 01, 2016, 03:01:13 PM
Medina froze.

That wasnt a lie? There was a monster? How lax was the guard at the Grand Dukes Palace?

A brief close of her eyes and she let out a small careful breath. Hope, thankfully, slept through the noise. "They didnt mean a literal monster did they?"
Title: Re: Hope is Born

The maid was as white as a ghost and instinctively clung to the child tighter, and moved closer to the prison bars where Medina was kept.

This time, it seemed someone had heard her- and someone was willing to answer.

"Aye, a monster- they say it went after the Grand Duke." The man chuffed and looked back towards where Medina was kept behind the bars. "Consider yourself fortunate to be guarded by so many skilled men."

And then the man turned around and narrowed his eyes to look down the hall. The strange noise seemed to have vanished, or grew further away, because the next time he heard the noise, it did sound a lot further off. And those all around him seemed to audibly release their breaths all at once.

"You're not guarding me," she said softly, looking at Hope, "you're guarding him." And her tone of voice implied that it was their sole task. Still she squared her shoulders and pressed closer to the bars, frowning slightly. "Wasnt the Grand Duke in the library?" A frown, "did he get hurt?"

The soldier hesitated. But he was no reason to hide it.
"The library was destroyed. Some monster got inside the palace." And he left out the part where the Grand Duke was no where to be found.

Destroyed?

Medina wasnt a stupid woman - for the most part.

A look of shock drew on her features.

"I could be bait," she looked to Hope, "surely a monster would smell my son on me. Maybe... maybe it would lure the beast out and you could... do something."

Title: Re: Hope is Born

The guard looked at her as if she had gone mad.
"It will do you and your child no good for you to act this way." Did she not understand they were all in danger? And it was a sort of unknown danger that even raised the hackles on the back of Zannrick's neck.

The mordecai had returned, lips firm and brows drawn.
"Word is the monster's gone towards the North gate. But nobody can give me a god damn description of the thing so we know what we're dealing with!" And he was pissed. For all he knew, the monster had already tore the Grand Duke apart.

He paused a moment before glaring towards Medina inside her cell. And iwth a hand on the hilt of his sword, he approached her, eyes narrowing.
"You're the newest addition to this palace... you, and your son." HIs lips were tight as he addressed her, eyes the color and appearing as cold as ice. "If you're conducting any witch craft here against our Grand Duke..." Zannrick began, but his eyes told the promise of what was to come to the guilty.

Medina looked him up and down.

"Are you implying that I created a monster?" she crossed her arms over her chest, "That I'm a witch?" she remembered the strange man from the night before. The weird... Monster the Grand Duke had become.

Medina squeezed her eyes shut and just shrugged, "Do with me what you will, Sir, I wouldn't hurt the Grand Duke anymore than I would harm my own son."

Medina bristled visibly, frowning deeply before she flushed with a new different kind of anger.

"Im not a foreigner. I was born here," and she wanted to get into hiw rude it was of him to assume such but... the grand duke.

Why was she concerned?

Because, perhaps, her child could turn into a monster too.

"Did anyone see this monster? Does anyone know what it looks like?"

Zannrick wasn't about to answer her. He was not about to give her the time of day. But he wouldn't have to, because soon enough a breathless guard came rushing down to the cells.

"Sir Austengard! It's the Grand Duke!"

Zannrick's eyes flashed as he was quick to push through his men to approach the man. The other was still catching his breath.

"He has been found... the monster... We believe has run off... But Grand Duke Allarrick..."
And without so much as another word, Zannrick barked the orders for his men to remain here as he stormed off to tend to his Grand Duke.

Another frown and Medina looked to the maid and Hope, frowning at them for a moment before she turned away. Was this going to be her life now? Trapped in a cell?

Another brief glance to the child. He was hers .

Right?

Angry tears welled in her eyes and she pressed her palm to her face. What a mess shed gotten herself into. Why couldnt she have born some dead soldier a son? Why... Medina licked her lips and remained silent for a moment, mouth opening to speak but she was sure she'd be shushed.

So she closed her mouth, pressed her forhead to the cell door and said nothing.

It was nearly an hour before another guard reported to the cell, calling for the maid with the baby and for a new set of recruits to watch the imprisoned woman. Not that she could go anywhere, but there was still a lingering sensation that whatever or whoever had attacked the palace...
Was still at large.

Medina frustratedly paced the cell, braiding and unbraiding her hair. Every moment was getting her more and more angry. So, she hummed her lullaby, eyes closed and feeling terribly homesick.

It would be hours before someone would approach her. No windows in the cell could not tell her the time of day, but Zannrick's face looked even more strained than it had before. It was evident he had yet to sleep. Then again, he as used to days of not sleeping- for it was hard to sleep when he knew his own Grand Duke he served barely slept himself.

But as he approached her cell his expression was grim as he indicated for one of the men to unlock her door.

"He wishes to see you."

Medina had eventually fallen asleep against the door, though everytime she had started to doze she jerked awake. Tired, Medina gave Zannrick a hesitant look, standing up, smoothing her dress, unbraiding her hair.

Trying to slyly wipe anything sleep related off of her face.

Words around this man were dangerous and Medina took a hesitant little breath before she gave a little confused nod.

A moment before she stepped closer to him, "Is Hope alright?" A careful swallow. Of course the child was okay. Wet nurses and women who were used to raising children. Medina rubbed her hand over her midsection before she ducked her head down, hair obscuring her face.

Zannrick said nothing, still cold as always.

Medina couldnt resist rolling her eyes. Momentarily wondering what it was like to live for someone else. Briefly wondering about the strange white haired man. Did he have a wife and children? Or did he live for his Grand Duke?

"Of course," she breathed, head down, hair curling around her waist, "my apologies." She followed at the appropriate distance, quiet, biting her lip slightly.

Zannrick lived for duty so much that some might have said if they were to cut his blood, it would run as poison to those who dare spill it. Like a hound, he remained vigilante in the Grand Duke's cause. Love, naturally, if asked, was a sign of weakness one could not afford. And a mordecai's place was to his ruler- and none deserved it more than the way Calent Allarrick was leading his men against those tainted with magic.

"You'll do well to hold your tongue in his presence. Let him speak, not you," Zannrick was quick to tell her, voice stern as ever.

"Yes, sir," she breathed. Tired. Mentally. Emotionally. She curled her arms around herself and followed, head down. What could the Grand Duke possibly have to say to her? Dread hung heavy in her chest and she prepared herself for the worst.

It may have seemed forever that Zannrick lead her through the enormous palace. And it seemed he was in no hurry, or if he was, perhaps it was hard to tell, as the staircases seemed unending, as well as the long steps down the hall. They eventually made it to the massive two doors she'd have come to know as the Grand Duke's personal suite, and the evidence of a struggle were written all over the wall...

Blood, deep scratches that seemed only an animal, beast or monster might make-
and the few remaining things not broken were left askew. Even the door wasn't left alone, and appeared to have been kicked in once or twice, yet the strong wood somehow held.

Zannrick wasted little time, a fist knocking at the door as he spoke through it, "Your grace, I've brought the woman."

And he paused for a reply.
And when it came, the voice was barely audible through the doors, but it was distinctively Calent's.

"Bring her in."

And he wasted no time in pushing the doors open, revealing the tornado looking ruins of the Grand Duke's room. The chandelier hung on by barely a thread, tall armoires had been toppled, book shelves having been collapsed and pages and bindings torn beyond repair.

His bed remain as well as it could be, and there he sat, The Grand Duke in simpler clothing, bandaged from nearly head to toe, hiding wounds that appeared to be still bleeding.

Medina grew sluggish, dsrk smudges under her eyes.  Though she grew alert when she saw the scratches. The disaster. A hand flew to her mouth and she pressed the other to her chest, a silent reminder to be quiet. It wasnt her place to ask.

Though she desperately wanted to.

Medina looked around the room before her golden gaze fell onto the bandaged up man. A flash of concern and she took a step forward, impulsive, before she stopped and swallowed. A hesitant look to Zannrick and she stoped moving. A curious glance to the Grand Duke before she ducked her head down and waited.

After a moment of seeing her not move, he adjusted himself uncomfortably on the bed. He supposed it didn't matter which way he sat, his body ached in every which direction. Sighing once he found a comfortable enough spot, he raised a hand towards her.

"You had little fear of me as a stranger, and less still as your Grand Duke, yet I appear as mortal as any man you've ever met and here you hesitate?"

His hand then moved to rest at his side, but he said nothing. SHe could take the invitation if she so chose.

Medina couldn't help the amused smirk on her face at his words and she gave him a longer more curious look. Trying not to blurt out that she could heal him. Well, potentially if his mordecai weren't nearby - which seemed like an unlike situation. Medina cleared her throat, "I was trying to be good," She stated softly, taking a few steps forward, "for once."

A long quiet examination of him and finally she found herself standing beside his bedside, looking down at him, "I don't fear you, Stranger, I fear offending your mordecai. He's a little... Intense when it comes to protecting his master." Medina impulsively lifted her hand, moving it to gently trail her fingers along his before she remembered that they were nothing and she snapped her hand back, tucking it into the folds of her dress

His eyes regarded her then over to Zannrick.

Saying nothing in protest, Zannrick bowed at the waste before showing himself out, closing the large doors behind him as he left.

Medina swallowed slowly before she looked over her shoulder, watching the Mordecai leave and turning back to Calent when the door shut. A moment's pause and she smoothed her hands over skirt and took a quick little breath.

"Why am I here?" She asked quietly, playing with the tips of her hair.

Medina's mouth went dry and she looked around the room, frowning ever so slightly. Dead? Or gone? Biting her lip she reached out her hand again only to pull it back in. Gone. What a vague word.

"I'm so sorry," Medina licked her lips and ducked her head down, giving a little shrug, "but why tell me?"

Calent said nothing, eyes lingering towards the North facing window.
"Without a wife, I have no means to an heir."
The words were simple enough, but then he turned to her.
"You bore these people Hope." He didn't let that sink in before he added, "And our marriage will give the people more than that."

Medina gasped so hard she inhaled her own saliva and had to turn to cough violently, tears in her eyes and chest hurting. Throat raw.

"I'm sorry, what." She swallowed -carefully- and shook her head, looking him up and down, alarmed. Incredibly alarmed. "You ... I..." She rubbed at her chest, having a child by him had been an unintended side effect. Marriage though.

"Are..." She looked at his head, taking a few steps forward, hand out, before she snatched it back, "I don't want to marry you. I don't love you. Being an orphan and  low born has one of the distinct advantages of there being no arranged marriages and this..." Medina looked confused again, frowning, a little concerned "Did you hit your head? Shouldn't you mourn?"

A shake of her head, "If you believe that then you don't know anything about the people you're 'under ownership' of." Medina frowned at him, moving her hand to his, "Fine. For you. For Hope.  Medina sighed, head down, "I'm well aware of that fact," a humourless laugh, "he already has your eyes." She rubbed at her wrists. "What would you have me do? Any choice i make will be the wrong one so... Tell me what to do."

Medina gave a little nod. Then she paused.

"Are you going to have me murdered after? So that Hope's all yours?"

Calent simply stared at her. He supposed the way the world has become to barbaric it wasn't too wild of a question.
"No, not when you can secure me more children."

Medina froze, hands stilled. It felt like her skin had gone cold and clammy and she fisted her hands into her dress after a moment. The idea of bearing more of his children made her sick and she swallowed carefully before giving him a hesitant look.

She breathed, "You're asking me to give you... Everything."  A shake of her head, she wanted to ask why her, but.. It was convenient. She was young. There was proof she could produce healthy children in another room not too far away. A child she wanted to shower with love and...

"Fine," Medina stated before she moved to stand up, "Whatever you wish, My Lord."

That's when his hand shot out and grabbed her wrist, good and tight. And she'd find herself being jerked back towards the bed with enough force so she would nearly fall over him. But he caught her, an impressive feat for a man who appeared in such a condition, but as she'd be able to see in their now intimate position, was that as the wraps were removed, all that was left of the blood were shallow scabs and whited scars.

"Then you're duty ought to start now."
And before he could think, or allow her to, his lips crashed hungrily against hers.

Medina wasn't too interested in the kiss.

His healing however caught her attention and while he smashed his lips to hers, fingers gently trailed along the cuts. The scabs. Feeling. Why were they so healed? Medina closed her eyes to better visualize the wounds before, the bloodied bandages. If he was no mage, then what was he?

It bothered her that his kisses sent heat zinging to her belly but she moved to pull away all the same, "If you intent to lay with me to get me with child it would be a lost cause." A shake of her head, hand still feeling along the newly healed wounds.

Calent looked at her, but did not let her go.
"Why?" came his icy demand, a hand moving to smooth down the side of her dress.

A pang of hope.

Medina swallowed carefully, taking in a little breath.

"Because my body is still recovering," A lie, her abilities kept her in tip-top shape and she knew she was all healed up, but a normal woman, she'd still be recovering. Medina was trying very hard to appear as such. "I highly doubt a child would take so soon," And she moved to pull away, quite sure she'd gotten him.

His grip stopped her as he looked at her.
"Many doctor's would disagree... that a woman is ten times more likely to conceive after having recently been with child."
His eyes kept to her's, and his grip held steady.

"Do I need to make this a command?"
It frustrated him. The way he lusted for her. But after all he had gone through that day....
And with his wife out of the picture....
He needed to do this. And he needed it now.

Medina couldn't stop the flash of irritation, it burned through her gold eyes and it made her eyebrows twitch downward angrily. She looked down at herself for a moment before shaking her head, "No," a command would only degrade them both. Medina pressed a hand to her chest, feeling heavy before she pulled her hair over her shoulder, "Should I get undressed?" she asked quietly, hesitant, focusing on the new scars on his body over anything else.

"It would make things easier," he agreed, and as he adjusted himself from where he sat upon the bed, she'd be able to notice the hard bulge in the front of his pants.

If it was with anyone else, Medina imagined, asking if she should get naked before 'doing the deed' would be humourous. Now she was hesitant. She didn't want to gain his wrath. Medina worked the ties carefully, pulling her dress off, peeling it from her until she was in a simple white camisole and the dress was in a pile on the floor. The camisole stuck to her breasts, heavy with milk having missed feeding Hope. A heated blush was on her face while she peeled it from herself and removed that too.

Medina's heart pounded in her chest and she closed her eyes before taking a hesitant step closer, one arm covering her beasts and the other covering her womanhood. "Where do you want me?" Her voice was soft and hesitant and she gave him a brief look before closing her eyes again.

"Closer... I want you closer."

Medina moved to the bed, fingers trembling. Before, there had been passion in the unknown, he had been just as vulnerable as she had been that night they'd made love. This time though, she was no better than a prisoner. Medina moved to kneel across from him on the bed, knees tucked under her before she finally looked at him. "Do you want me to seduce you or something?" She finally ventured, moving her hands from her chest, though carefully arranging her long hair to cover more than her hands could.

He turned to regard her, all of her and moved  a hand to smooth her hair away from her shoulder, exposing one of her large, swollen breasts. His hand moved gently, softly up the side of it before he paused to look her in the eyes.

There was a brief moment of hesitation before his lips claimed her's suddenly, and he closed his eyes tightly and let himself fall into the heated frenzy of his need. Hands moved all over her body, tasting what they could as his own lips coaxed her's open, an dhis hands, coaxing her to crawl onto his lap.

No words.

Medina swallowed thickly, breath catching when his hand touched her breast. Unafraid, she looked back into his eyes, searching for something. Medina wasn't sure what but she knew she wouldn't find it. Not in his eyes. The kiss caught her by surprise and she gave a little whimper, heart thumping heavily in her chest, letting herself be coaxed onto his lap, feeling the hardness of him between her legs.

There was hesitation and she pushed the rest of her hair over her shoulder before she trailed her hands over his shoulders and pulled away slightly, "What do I call you when we're like this?" She breathed, voice barely above a whisper.

She'd been waiting for a 'my lord' or 'your grand dukeness'. Not given a choice. Medina's breath hitched and she pushed her fingers through his hair, thumb caressing the tip of his ear before she gave him a brief look, "Stranger," she closed her eyes, looking a little frustrated, "I want you to be my stranger, I want you to... to... be a nobody in the darkness with me. Just a man. No title. No burdens. Just for a little while. Like that first night without all the mud and rain, when we made Hope." The words were out before she planned on saying them and she pressed in for another kiss, taking his hand and pressing it gently against her breast and wiggling closer to him.

"Stranger..." he repeated, one of his own hands moving to rake through her hair.
"Every night," he went on, promise in his voice. "I'll be your stranger."A nd soon his lips consumed her's in a raw fire as his hips moved up to grind himself against her while blindly fumbling for the ties and buttons on his pants.

When she was with the Grand Duke, she detested him. But apparently when he was overcome by lust, he was easy to deal with. Medina shivered against his hands, giving a little whimper of need when he ground up against her, her own hands moving to help his. Finally, the last button was undone and she cupped him boldly, drifting her hand along him before leaning back ever so slightly to look at him. The scars gave him character and she shuffled closer again, giving into the lust before she ground herself down against him. "I don't know if you'd be able to keep up with every night," She teased against his ear, voice trembling.

His voice came out in a long, gutteral moan as he made entry, her sex hot and tight all around him as he instinctively moved inside her with need. At her words, he grunted, taking her face forcefully and kissing her with need.
"Every night, and every day," he growled, assuring her he could and he would, his dick making long and powerful strides within her, and his eyes already growing low with lustfilled need.
Title: Re: Hope is Born

The moan was accompanied by her own before his kiss was returned with passion. Medina gasped into the kiss and each time he thrust into her heat she had to bite back a gasp or a moan, one good thrust had her bounce and she winced, hands moving to her breasts. "Gentle," She moaned, hands moving to his shoulders, grinding down on him in an effort to keep the pleasure going but the movements to a minimum, "Unless you want to milk me so they don't hurt," she choked out, "Try not to bounce me so much."

Calent growled, his lips silencing hers as his hands moved to grab her chest, but then delicately massaged them.
"You may have to get used to them like this for a while," he said, making no effort to bounce her any less as this pace and strike felt too damned good for him to just stop.
"What if I take you on your belly?"

Medina gasped, head tilting back, crying out with each thrust, biting her lip before shaking her head, overcome with feelings. Everything felt new and wonderful and it tore her inside that she'd never have normal, "They're fine if I feed the baby," she moaned out, head tilting back but his suggestion had her look down at him, cheeks flushed. There was a pause and she shook her head, eyes falling closed, hands moving to his cheeks to pull him into another kiss.

"No," She breathed against his lips, "I want it like this," it was worth the ache, she decided, rising and falling upon him, intent on her pleasure, if he was going to be greedy for it, she would be too. "You feel so good," she whined out, head throw back, "Not being on the rain almost makes it better."

A thrill raced through him as she wanted to ride. Then a ride she'd get. His hands held fast to her waste, keeping her in place as she rolled her hips over him. It felt so good to have this woman in charge, to conquer him even in his position.

Hands smoothed up her back, guiding her closer as his lips reached hungrily for hers.

"But I like the rain," he,murmured between kisses.

Medina smiled at his words, nuzzling into his kisses while her hands drifted up and down his back. "Then we'll have to get lost in the woods on a rainy day," she whispered, back arching and hips picking up the pace. Medina couldnt help the noises that left her, heated cries and soft moans, "make love beside a tree," she panted, eyes closed while she spoke her imagination and rode him, before throwing her head back with a lusty cry before biting her lip and looking bashful.

She wasn't the only one getting heated by the recollection of their roll in the rain. Calent's thrusts became more fervent as he held onto her, fucking her with need. His mouth found her lips, then her neck, to where he trailed down to her swollen breasts, careful of her leaking nipples as his fingers fondled them.

Medina's passions grew as their fucking continued. There was no love here, just raw emotions and heat. Her fingers dug into his shoulders and she cried her pleasure to the ceiling. The ache of her breasts at his touch turned into a terrible pleasure and she bit her lip, rocking her hips harder. Wanting to reach her peak with him - though she was far more sensitive than before. Medina gasped, stilling upon him for a moment before she came with a shout, grinding down to take him as deep as she could, sweat beaded on her forehead, cheeks flushed, eyes closed before she opened them again to look at him and moved, intent on sharing her pleasure with her Stranger.

Seeing her writhe with need as she rode him scorched a passion through his veins. He began to buck, and roughly, growling grunting, nothing short of an animal before he gripped onto her hips and rolled her onto her side, his own body twisting as he took her at a new angle. His body glistened with sweat as his balls slapped against her ass each time he thrust within. She was so hot, so tight, and soon he was seeing white, crying out tot he heavens as his hot seed flooded her good and deep. He kept pumping, and as he slowed, so did his cum. And his forehead was pressed to her shoulder as he shivered and kissed her...
Then turned to nestle in beside her, one arm draped across her form, and his heart beating heavy, so that she'd be able to feel it as he held her close.

Pleasure hummed through her veins. Medina's breath was coming out in hot little pants and as her Strangers heart thumped where she could feel it, hers was responding in kind. A quick moment of her eyes open, to look at the room reminded her of where she was, but she quickly shut her eyes, nestled into the arm around her, taking his hand and pressing his palm to feel her heartbeat. It was easier to focus on those and she gave a breathless chuckle when they almost beat in sync.

Medina didn't move, remained where she was to offer comfort beyond what the pleasure of her body could give the scarred man beside her. Though part of her was waiting to be pushed away, told to dress and leave. The other part wanted to pretend for just a little bit longer, so she did.

But he didn't push her away. He didn't ask her to dress. He didn't tell her to,leave. In fact, as he held onto her, his cheek found her shoulder as he murmured, "Stay with me through the night."

Medina's heart skipped a beat and she felt...  Something. Pity? Sorrow? "Alright," she breathed, taking the kind gentle man while she couls. No doubt he'd be back to normal tomorrow. It was interesting how feeling scared and vulnerable changed someone. She threaded her fingers between his and snuggled back, turning her head so he didnt get a bunch of hair in his face. "Ill keep you safe,"  the words were a sleepy whisper and she snuggled into the bed, back against the warmth his body provided and slowly drifted off.

The thing that puzzled Medina the most was... Why hadnt she woken up?

Medina slunk from his bed, careful to pull her clothes on and tiptoed to the door. Poking her head out, she looked around and realized she had no idea where in this grand place she was.

She just knew she needed to find her son. Medina was craving the contact desperately. "Hello?" She called down the hall, taking careful quiet steps.

You think it was easy finding out i was pregnant? Do you think I enjoyed finding out who you were?" Medina snarled at him, an ugly angry look on her face, "He wouldnt have grown up in a palace but he would have been fed, clothed, educated, warm and Loved."

Once Hope was in her arms Medina felt... Whole. She smiled brightly, the anger over the Duke - it was still hard to think of him as a person with a name instead of just... A figure head with a title - dissipated and Medina grinned down at her child. A brief kiss to his forehead. "That's wonderful, Thank you for caring for him," Medina said to the maids, smiling down at Hope who continued his gleeful wriggling.

Giving a brief bow to the maids, Medina turned to the room, walking around quietly until she got to the Duke. Hope let out a happy little wail and grabbed desperately at the other person in the room, "I think he wants you," She said, voice a little quiet in surprise and she took a few steps closer, holding Hope, "Do you want to hold him?"

Calent had been silent, not doing much but staring at some paperwork on his small desk. At her words, he turned to her, studied his child, studied her. Then he stood, and moved to accept the child and pulled him close, holding his warm, squirming form against his body and just listening to the way the baby bubbled and cooed.

Medinas heart melted.

Maybe it would nt be so bad to have a second child by this ma-- no. Medina swallowed, stepping closer to Calents side and rubbing a hand up and down Hopes back while he cooed and drooled on his father.

"Isnt he beautiful?" She breathed, a strange pride in her. She made this. "He'll be handsome like you, i imagine," and she smiled, eyes never leaving the baby.

He studied his son quietly, then gave a soft stroke to his cheek. Then Hope grabbed at his finger, and began to suck on it, drool dribbling down his chubby cheeks.

"That'll be one good trait he'd inherit," came Calent's cool words as he just watched as Hope played with his hand.

Medina accepted the babe, watching him fuss for a moment before he cuddled in. Calent was staring at their child when the question was asked. He blinked and looked at her.
"Why? Do you think you are?"
Though they had only spent the night together.... he felt it would be a bit too early to tell. Then again, he wasn't entirely familiar with how this worked- not being a woman himself, and the fact his wife only got pregnant twice, gave him little knowledge to really go off of.

Medina blinked at him, smiling slightly after the surprise fell away.

"I wouldn't know for a few weeks, if I was" Provided there were no mordecai around. She knew what to look for now, so she'd probably be able to tell after a few days. Instead of the few weeks it took for her to realize she was pregnant with Hope. "I was just curious, I've never really had to ... Calent frowned. So many questions...
He had never fully thought into it, but then again, he already knew the answers.
"If you did bear me another son, he'd be the first in line. But it does not remove Hope's position when I make the legal paperwork to have him included in my lineage. And if you have a daughter... she'd be treated like my other, and will want for nothing all her life."

Medina looked down at Hope, touched a chubby little cheek. She supposed that it was a decent pay off. Sort of. Provided she didnt get caught being exactly what she was. Medina tilted her head, "could i meet her?" She paused, "your daughter. Not right now but... some day?" If fascinated her, how before she didnt really care about children but now that she had a chubby one in her arms she had so much attention to give. A daughter. Medina smiled slightly at the idea.

Then she rememberd. The Grand Duke. "Would they be pawns in your little political game?" She whispered, not looking at him.

"Game?" He frowned as he observed her.
"Perhaps someday you can meet her. She's not much older than Hope. But she is starting to walk now and I'm told by her nurses she gets into everything."
There was a ghost of a smile on his lips, even a hint of sadness in his far away gaze. Kathryn... he wondered what had become of her. Had someone taken her? Had she run away? Had she killed herself?

All options were plausible...
But in the end, he would never let himself believe the truth.

"Are you enjoying yourself?" he asked, returning his attention to her and their child.

Medina smiled, imagining a tiny little girl that looked like him - though she could be wrong.  A brief glance down at Hope. No, she'd look like Hope but with blonde hair like her mother. It took a great deal of effort not to reach out at give his arm a comforting squeeze. Would it be brushed off if she had?

His question threw her off guard and she looked at him, not hesitant to meet his gaze if he turned it to her. "No," She replied honestly, "I didn't want to be here. I never wanted to be here. I was supposed to raise my son at home with my brother, teach him how to be a good intelligent man. He'd go on to be a Doctor or a Scholar. Not..." Medina sighed, giving Hope a gentle little bounce when he began to frown, "He wasn't supposed to be known by you." She smoothed her hand up and down his back, "I suppose it's my own fault for not knowing what the Grand Duke looked like."

She smirked, "The night would have probably been the same but our meeting while I was pregnant. I probably wouldn't have said anything," and maybe if she hadn't said anything he wouldn't have done anything about it.

"I suppose any changes in life are always difficult." Still, it was strange to consider anyone coming from simple means not wanting to bask, at least for a little while, in the pleasures of nobility. He looked towards Hope, watching as the babe gurgled and flailed his little fists while being cradled tendering in his mother's arms.

"Do you feel like I've kidnapped you?"

A pause and Medina looked down at their child. A brief glance at Calent and she shook her head gently before shrugging helplessly. "I don't know, I just feel blessed that my child is safe. Healthy," She case him a brief glance, "Thank you, by the way, for delivering him," A hesitant smile before turning away, "I don't feel kidnapped. More... Trapped.  I'd only feel kidnapped if Hope wasn't safe here," and she looked down at Hope who was gnawing on her clothing, drooling happily on the fabric of her top.

"Perhaps you might grow accustomed to it," came his soft reply, eyes still on their child.

Medina smiled, rubbing her knuckle into Hope's mouth for him to drool on instead of her clothing. "Grow accustomed to being trapped?" Then she paused, "Is that what you did?"

Calent moved uncomfortably as he frowned.
"What I did?"

Medina shrugged, "I wasnt accusing you," she whispered, "but... Did you grow used to it? Being trapped? Do you being here?" She swallowed carefully, "isnt that why we met in the forest? You felt trapped?"

Calent bristled before he cast a tense stare upon her. She'd feel the weight of it, but he eventually looked away, towards the window, and beyond.

"Not trapped." He frowned.
It felt more like suffocation.

Medina tilted her head, "not trapped," she whispered, "but something." Hope made an angry little flutter with his arms and the noises he made were almost awful, "do you mind?" She paused, "if i feed him here? I dont want to offend you."

"Offend?" he frowned. "No,please, go ahead." He would never deny his own blood a meal. And he'd seen Kathryn, and wet nurses, feeding his daughter, so he was no stranger to how a woman fed her child.

Medina shrugged while she went about preparing to feed Hope. "I dont know you," she whispered bringing the baby to her so he could feed.  "I assume since you're noble you're more...  delicate." Though the tone of her voice was teasing, she glanced at him over her shoulder, trying not to smile.

"Men are not delicate," Calent said simply. Then again, he could say the same for most women he had come to know. "But we do bleed all the same." His eyes went soft, his stare- distant as he watched his son nurse on her breast.

Once Hope was finished, he pulled away with a gurgle and Medina popped him over her shoulder, gently patting his back as she'd recalled her brother doing on occasion while he was doctor-ing.

"Well... You... You have one by me," Medina licked her lips and looked to Calent. Her greatest enemy. The person she should hate the most for making her live in fear of herself and her abilities. It would be a lie to say she didn't find him attractive. In spite of the scars and the constant frown.  The scars were distinguished. Perhaps too harsh for a real lady but for Medina, they simply reminded her of her strange and the oddly passionate night they spent together.

"why don't you... Get a Harem of sorts, then. I read a book once of a man with a Harem, he had almost fifty children by as many women." She smoothed her hand up and down Hope's back while she spoke, head turned down and away.

Even suggesting it made her cringe, was that jealously? Over something she'd never truly have? Medina found that, even if she'd never have it - his... Compassion or.... Dare she even think it, fondness. Love. She could take what she would get while she was here, if that meant secret trysts to simply beget a child... Medina was horrified to find herself willing to do it, if only for the few moments that he'd be her stranger and be only with her.

The room was quiet. He listened to Hope's breathing as he clung tiny fingers into Medina's sleeve.
"A harem is not what I desire." He frowned. What did he desire? He knew what people spoke of him, and after all these years he realized the deep scarring of their words, as ugly as the scar blotched across his face.

Legacy was key to a powerful man. Hope offered that, and so much more to his people. He regarded Medina, since the baby seemed to grow content and sleep. Taking the babe from her, he gently stroked his son's cheek before moving to send him off with a maid.

Still quiet, he remained in the room with Medina, at first not looking at her, then never tearing his eyes away. Soon fingers found and loosened her clothing, and strong hands smoothed across each under layer of clothing until he felt her flesh. Lips sealed away even breath as he took her, pinned her to an open window pane and threw what was left of her dress aside.

White steam crept up across her figure, pressed to glass as the Grand Duke's pants were loosed and he found himself claiming her again.

Was this what she wanted her life to be?

Medina didnt protest as her son was taken away. Watched as the man tenderly stroked his sons face. How had this come to be? it made her chest ache that a normal little family would only be caught in glimpses. What was worse was she would probably cherish the image of them together like that forever.

Then, Calent came back and she watched him with hesitation, didnt protest as he pushed clothing aside. The air was cold on her flesh and she found herself pressing against him when she could.  Needy whimpers and eager movements.

Every moment could be her last here. They could kill her for any reason. So Medina gave herself to him eagerly, proving herself far more wanton than she'd probably ever figured she could be. His nickname from her was a strangled gasp from her lips and her hands were pressed firmly against whatever he decided to push her up against.

It was a terrifying drug; lust. It was a wanton need; power. But everything could be cast aside when the frailty of his disposition waned dramatically at the baser instincts of the man he was. Want, need; he was hungry for so much more in this world, yet so many believed he had everything.

An estranged wife who may very well have been lost to the war; and this strong woman- common, and also dangerous; but she was the mother of his child... his son, a child already born into fame due to the nature of the contractions' location of his birth.

If it wasn't a sign from God himself, he didn't know what was. And he was tired. He had so many years of needed sleep he'd never gain, so many years of emotions he could not speak. It wasn't only a deadly game for her- but for him as well.

How would his people see him? And they could, were they well enough to. She was, after all, naked and against the window pain, and he- half dressed himself as lips could not stop kissing her's and his hips could not stop pounding.

No, this was all he could think of in the moment. Satisfy need, let baser instincts over throw him. He had been ruling so stoically, so coldly and for so long that he never realized how much he truly needed these moments of passion. And she felt so very right in his arms. Dark skin, so tan, almost a sin in this world where so many were white and pink of flesh. She was no doll, nor lord's man- but inthis moment he was claiming this woman as his.

He couldn't hold it back. He didn't want to. And he was making so much noise as he flooded her body with his climax. The maid had seen- she hadn't meant to- but it was a passing notion as she didn't enter the room- only heard what was going on. She clung to the babe, and rushed him off to his own chambers. But the maid wasn't the only one lurking nearby.

Zannrick could hear everything. And he knew what woman his Grand Duke was fucking. Even still, he found himself remaining as a sentry at the door, eyes cold as stone; while things went quiet inside the room.

Calent pulled himself away, panting and coated in sweat. He slipped off another layer of his clothing before dropping onto a nearby chaise. His dick was hard still, even after his satisfaction- but he had so much to shoulder that it seemed a single fuck wasn't enough to satisfy him. Angered his body was still so needy, he raked a hand through his sweat soaked hair and growled as finger's twisted into it. He wanted to pull his hair out, he wanted to punch the wall- but instead, he remained infuriated at himself and still high off the lusty needs.

And Medina would be able to see him sitting there, leaning back, dick propped up and slick as honey, eager and turgid for more. Yet she'd also realize he'd already found some peace, as surely his seed would be slipping down her legs towards the floor.

It was an odd whirlwind of situations and emotions for Medina.

Before she'd always known her place. Always known where her life would lead and what would happen to it. Medina had always known that her abilities would remain a secret. Medina had always known that if she were to be found out by anyone her life was forfeit. Medina had always known that some day, some how, she would leave Connlaoth. She would leave Fred and Reajh and go live in Serendipity.

Only now, it was apparent that she knew nothing. Condensation from her breath on the glass collected and beaded down to the windowsill and her fingers grabbed for purchase against it. If anyone out there were too look up they'd see her. It shamed her a little to think that it had only made the pleasure more. Had made the noises of her lover tighten her gut and when she felt his release Medina was soon to follow.

When he moved away and she grew cold, she kept her back turned, legs trembling, breath panting. Her hair a long tangled mess over her shoulders, clinging to her breasts and arms. Of course she shifted away from the glass, leaning against the wall before she oh so slowly looked over her shoulder. A little glance to... Calent.

Was he her stranger right now? Or the Grand Duke exerting his power over the... Chosen vessel of his children. Did she care? Medina turned around, naked, fixing her hair over her shoulders so it fell down her back in a straight wave of darkness. A hungry golden look was given to her stranger and she gave him a curious look before she moved to kneel beside the chaise.

What did she want from him? Medina didn't even know. Anything? Could he give her anything? Despite all his supposed power... Medina licked her lips, bottom one getting caught between her teeth before she looked up at him, hand hovering over his thigh before she caught his cock in her palm and leaned over before taking it in her mouth and working him for all she was worth - or at least as well as the dirty parts in stories described.

Now, Medina knew nothing. Her hair pooled along his thigh, off the chaise and to the floor, her hand working what her mouth couldn't before she pulled away, licking her lips and looking up at her -- No. Calent. He was never her stranger, "Unless you pulling away was you wanting to stop," she whispered huskily, lips red, cheeks flushed.

How weak and foolish a man he fell as she was on her knees before him. He was figuratively the same, breath shallow, eyes rolling back to see his brains as hands scraped and gripped into her hair at her attentions. And when she paused- was she so smug?- it made him realize his vulnerability here.

And he liked it. His dick twitched, glistening with all sorts of wetness from her.

"Does it matter," his voice was soft between hot pants. His hands raked through her sweaty hair, getting stuck, but gently he continued to stroke through it. "You came to me." his dick twitched again, glistening now with an eager tip of leaking precum.

Did it matter?

Of course it mattered.

Medina had been watching him though, pressed her cheek to this thigh briefly while he pushed his hand through her sweaty tangled hair. While a small gesture, she was surprised at it and she looked at him like he was some present before her. It had never been on Medina's agenda to be the Grand Duke's whore but she supposed, if it was going to be given to her she may as well live up to it.

There was a chance for this person to just be a man around her, one who experienced pleasure and pain. A natural healer, raised by them... On some level, she sought to ease his hurts. Why him?

Why not.

"I did," She whispered, pressing a kiss to his hip before she swiped her tongue along his cock before taking it into her mouth again to finish the job. Her hands cupped his balls and she worked him, laving her tongue along the head of his cock, suckling. Hand moving to work him along. Then she pulled away from him, hand squeezing his cock, lips wet and she pressed another kiss to his thigh before she resumed her earlier ministrations.

It wasn't for her, well, mostly, watching him enjoy himself was practically making her drip. The slowly growing crick in her neck was dampening her pleasure though and she worked him just a little bit harder and just a little bit faster in effort to get him off so she could stop being at such an awkward angle.

And all of her efforts came to a head, and the hot seeds of her labor gushed everywhere. He shivered, hands nearly tearing out her hair as he cried out his ecstasy, then collapsed onto the chaise, eyes closed...
and just breathed.

The pull of her hair had tears come to her eyes, and she decided that, while she'd enjoyed watching Calents face... It was kinda gross, her neck hurt and she was quick to swallow because what else was she gonna do with it. Medina pulled away, still kneeling on the floor, hair brushing against her back. Making sure there was nothing questionable around her mouth she rested her cheek against his thigh and watched him. Medina, curious as ever, studied his relaxed features.

This man was the father of her child.

Or was she the mother of his.

Medina pressed a final, chaste kiss to his thigh before she moved away, fixing her hair. It wouldn't do well to wear out her welcome and after a few moments she stood up with a sigh, looking tired. A frown and she looked around the room while finger combing her hair. Now just where had he tossed the various layers of her dress.

A blink of surprise and Medina let herself be tugged towards the man. Her Stranger. Calent? Grand Duke. Medina chewed on her lower lip, looking at him for a moment before she sat, head tilted. "Yes?" Her voice was husky with unsatisfied lust and she pulled her hair over her shoulder, a quiet move of modesty.

He was still reeling from what she had done, but his actions would surprise even himself, as he pulled her against him, hugging her, if even partially so, as he sat there, trying to catch his breath.

The action had a surprised chuckle leave Medina and she looked up at him, curling an arm over his chest. Impulsively she pressed a kiss to his chest, lingering for a few moments to feel his heartbeat, the odd angle had her head at about chest height and Medina looked up at him. Medina wanted to say that he was free to be... Who ever with her. That the last thing she had ever wanted was into his bed. The last thing she wanted was any sort of power.

Another lingering kiss to his chest and she let herself be held against him, savoring the warmth of another for just a few moments. Letting herself pretend that she was with someone she loved for just a few moments. Medina sighed and snuggled in, eyes closed, listening to him catch his breath.

And he did more than catch his breath. Somehow, after all their strenuous activity, it took such a toll on him that....

Ten minutes went by, leading into twenty; and it was evident his breaths were much softer now, for he was asleep.

Oh no.

Medina didn't want to move him. Didn't want to pull away, so ever so carefully she moved to get just the little bit more comfortable, tucked her legs between his. Curled her arm around his chest, tucked her cheek against him to feel his heart beating and eventually, against her better judgement... Medina fell asleep too. Naked and curled around her Stranger.

And for the first time in ages...
The Grand Duke slept, and slept for several hours, undisturbed and...
seemingly peaceful.

There was a moment of confusion and Medina's hand slid down a fleshy bed. What in Ansgar's name was that? Her hand curled around it before she remembered, oh right, at this moment the Grand Duke was her personal man pillow.

Slowly, hopefully slyly, she removed her hand from his... Man stuff and pondered between waking him up nicely, gently, or just leaving. Medina chose the most latter, slowly and carefully pulling herself away from him, wincing slightly. Hope.

The Grand Duke's comfort wasnt forgotten but her main concern was her child. Her aching breasts were a good reminder. One barefoot on the ground. Two. Arms untangled. She found her dress after shuffling around a bit, placing the thinner underdress over the naked man, then she pulled her dress on messily. She didn't care she had to find her son.

A quick shuffle to the door and she pulled it open, eyes only on the hallway.

"Where do you think you're going?"

Medina's heart lurched and she looked up at the Mordecai.

"I was going to see my son, if you must know." She frowned, paused before continueing, "my breasts hurt terribly and unless you want to milk me like a cow I'd suggest you either have my son brought to me or let me go to him."

His expression remained hardened.
"You shall not pass," he seethed. "You're under custody of the Grand Duke." And for the life of him, if he was in the room... dead... He tried to look past her, but couldn't see in well enough and became more rigid for it.

Medina just frowned at him.

"Then I'd like for you to send for my son," she said  impatient, irritated. Sort of achy, too, which added to the irritation. "I doubt the Grand Duke would enjoy milk for breakfast. He's still sleeping anyway," she added, stepping aside so the mordecai could look into the room. "Would you like to check on him?"

"Sleeping?" the words came off his tongue like venom. He knew the Grand Duke did not just sleep. He bared his teeth. "Open the door and show him to me." It was a command, not a request.

Medina frowned, squaring her shoulders and her first instinct was to protect.  Still, she gave a little confused nod and pushed the door open wider, standing farther back. "But... Be quiet. Also, uh... he's naked. Except for my underskirt I put on him," Medina held her hands at her hips. Impatient. Why was sleeping such a terrible thing?

Such professions so easy from this damn woman was like knives cutting through his blood. He shoved her aside with the heavy plates of his shoulder armor and took a step inside. He could see Calent, and though he wanted to go over to him to see if she had been lying- his eyes could tell well enough he at least wasn't dead-
His lack of any real clothing didn't hinder the upa nd down movements of his chest.

Asleep... the Grand Duke? Any surprise left his features as soon as they appeared as he cut another glare to Medina. Did she poison him.
"How long?"
Clearly it had been poison!

Medina blinked. How long had he been sleeping?

"Uhm.." she flushed and looked away. "If you've been out here all night then.." she awkwardly fingercombed her hair, not looking at the Mordecai anymore. "Since the noises ended."
Title: Re: Hope is Born [M]

Pissed, he shoved past her with a growl, stepping full into the room- which was enough action to awaken the Grand Duke. Calent groaned as he moved, stretching out upon the chaise when he was alerted to the eyes upon him and he jerked. The underdress slipped down his form, which he barely caught from falling and tensed at the sight of his hound like mordecai.

Zannrick's gaze was intense, and full of disapproval; and knowing this man well enough, Calent rose and gestured, "There is no need to stand so tensely, Zannrick." His eyes flickered to where Medina stood near the door. He looked back to the mordecai. "How long had I slept?"

Zannrick's voice went icy as he gravely replied, "Most of the night."

Calent paused to think it over before he gestured, "Very well. Send my servants to prepare two baths, and bring the child here to its mother." No doubt he had been awoken because of her desire to see the child. And after all she'd done for him....
The least he could do was not deny her to see her own babe.

Rigidly, he nodded. And without so much as casting any looks Medina's way, he exited to the hall, closing the door in his wake.

Calent sat there in the silence for a moment, eyes glued to the wall. It was a strange sensation, to feel so groggy, to actually have some quenching and yearning for more of his sleep. He adjusted the skirts laying limply across his lap before turning to Medina.

"Did you sleep well?"
Title: Re: Hope is Born [M]

Medina decided she wasn't very fond of the Hound of a Mordecai.

In fact, she was even a little angry that he'd woken up her stranger. Calent. He wasn't her stranger. Not anymore. Playing pretend was over and Medina walked towards the chaise, hair coiling loosely at her hip, hands held together in the folds of her dress.

She was surprised that he called to bring the child here. The baths. Medina wasn't sure what to think. Did he hate her or did he need her? So caught up in her own thoughts of just what she was supposed to be here, his question caught her off guard and she jerked towards him so fast, golden eyes wide that her hair fanned out behind her in a small arch.

"Did I..." Medina blinked, then relaxed and smiled, "Yes, I did. Surprisingly well considering how cramped that chaise looks like it would be." Medina took a few careful steps towards Calent, looking at his chest where, she flushed to discover, was a red mark on his flesh from her cheek. Did that mean she also had a red mark on her face? Her hand went up to cover it, just in case. "I.. And you?" She looked over her shoulder, "I'm going to assume you sleeping well is miracle, he positively foamed at the mouth when I told him to be quiet because you were sleeping."

"It is a rare occurrence, yes."

Medina noticed it and she felt ... Warm. It was terrible. This man would want her dead if he knew. Would want his son dead, probably. Still, Medina had a little internal war with herself because she wanted to make this scarred man smile for real. Despite all that, she wanted things she should never want.

It was a subtle smile, but it brightened his eyes and she found herself staring at them, mouth slightly open before she nodded. "Well, I hope it ... Isn't so rare in the future," She smiled hesitantly and looked at his waist, her undredress and licked her lips, "Would you like me to get you a robe? I... Don't know how to act around maids and I'm not sure if them seeing you naked is a normal occurrence. " She gestured to a place she figured there would be clothing, "Unless you're okay with what I put on you."

Calent remained on the chaise, though appearing a little stiff in the way he had slept, there was a relative calm about him. He said nothing in response to what she said, but instead, gestured beside him.
"Why don't you have a seat? The maids can bring me proper attire when they bring Hope."

Medina smiled at the mention of Hope. Then she moved a hand over her chest, wincing ever so slightly. This rearing children thing made everything hurt and slowly, carefully, she moved and sat beside him. Facing him.

Golden eyes examined his chest, a hand lifted to reach out and touch a scar before she pulled it back and placed it on her lap. "You've a soothing heartbeat," she murmured, looking at his chest before his eyes, "Apparently it's as effective on me as it is on Hope."  A small smile and she turned her head to watch the door, eager to see her son.

In spite of himself, his smile grew a little more. But Medina was looking away, and when there was a sound at the door, he called over to the maid, "Bring him in!" There was no hesitation, but eyes were averted as the nurse maid bowed feebly and offered the child to Medina.

"He had been well, my lady," it was reported. "Drank some, but I think he could use a bit of his mother's milk now."

At his voice, she jumped, but also turned to him with what could only be a genuine smile. Her face brightened and her eyes sparkled. At the sight of her child she felt full to bursting and her arms were out impatiently to hold him, smiling at the maid and taking Hope close to her chest. The baby gurgled, surprisingly well mannered and Medina, without a second thought, bared her breast and pressed the child to it.

A sigh of relief.  Her finger stroked his cheek and she smiled down at her Hope, another glance to the mostly-naked man on the chaise and a smile before she just... Looked at him, his child to her breast. Their child to her breast. It was a sobering thought. She knew. He knew. A brief glance to the door, where his Mordecai was. He knew. Medina looked down at Hope, hand on his back. "Hello, baby," She said softly before she started to hum her little lullaby, the rest of the room forgotten with her child in her arms.

Calent let her handle that while he issued the orders for his clothing. It seemed Zannrick had already prepared for that, because a second maid entered with a proper attire and alerted them, "The dinner meal shall be ready to serve within the hour."

Calent bowed. "Thank you. We shall make haste." He turned to Medina, watching her tend to the child before looking towards Zannrick. He knew the mordecai was seething. For once, Calent didn't care if his actions upset anyone. He was just.... calm for once, sated. Perhaps he just needed to fuck more. But vulgar thoughts were aside when he rose to stand near mother and child, an act that lasted too brief as they were then alerted their baths were ready.

He gestured to the nearest made.
"Guide the lady to her bath and I shall meet her at the dining hall." He had gotten dressed briefly before making his exit, but even as he moved down the hall and Zannrick was taking up his position to flank him, the Grand Duke paused and moved to halt him.

"Zannrick... I need you to keep a watchful eye over my guest."

Yes, there was hate in his eyes. Hate and rage. But he knew his loyalty was unquestionable.

"Yes, of course," came Zannrick's gruff reply, as he bowed to Calent who then disappeared down the hall to his own room so he could bathe before supper. Internally, the mordecai chewed on his new 'baby sit the whore' position he was just assigned, and cast such a dirty look towards Medina as she fed her child.

Medina watched passively as Calent got up, sort of dressed and left.

Did he want nothing to do with his child? A furrow of her brows. Why did she care so much? Medina fed Hope, switching breasts because she was selfish and they both hurt and hey, fat babies were cute. Though, she knew Hope would want for nothing as long as he was here. Want for nothing as long as she was alive. The idea that she could be killed as some political move was going to be a very real threat someday, she imagined.

It wasn't long after she finished feeding Hope that she was directed to the bath by a maid.

"Where did he go?" She finally questioned the maid, nodding towards the door and silently hoping the maid knew whom she was talking about.

"His rooms, my lady," Her voice was soft and she wasn't sure if she should reach for the baby or... ? Medina shifted slightly, looking at the open hands before she turned to the maid and smiled. Said maid gave an awkward little smile and nodded. Tucked against her shoulder, Hope gurgled pleasantries, giving a happy squeal when he saw Zannrick, pudgy hands grabbing for whatever shinies he could.

Medina didn't stop him, she simply returned his glare with a pleasant look and continued following the mage. The bath wasn't a grand event, it was much fancier than anything she'd experienced and she felt, well, pretty. Her hair was silky smooth and fell to her waist in a shiny waterfall of brown. Medina was practically inseparable from Hope whom she brought into the bath with her, propped against her knees. They smelled like the oils she'd put into the bath.

Hair brushed and put into a simple clip at the back, dressed in a dark green dress that she had insisted on being plain. Hope was dressed, well, like a baby. Though Medina frowned at the cleavage. Why had the maid picked one with cleavage. Was it because she had such a large bust now? Sighing with Hope curled into her arms, Medina frowned again, looking around, curious as to why she was dressed.

The dinner meal was to be served within the hour but why was she going.

Now... She waited. Not really sure what for. Hope had been taken by another maid after he'd gotten sleepy and fallen asleep on her chest, drooling on her neck. Medina looked to the stoic Mordecai who hadn't really left whichever part of the hallway she was in and frowned at him. "Do you only make that face?" She inquired, bored, "Did it get stuck like that because that's the only one you do make?"

The comment only gained her an even sourer look as he gravelily replied, "Watch your tongue. I'm here to escort you, not make small talk." He remained rigid as a maid joined them, bowing to them both.
"The dining hall is this way, milady." She stole one look to Zannrick before moving to lead the pair through a series of interwoven hallways before they were presented before a grand door, that of which, once they were announced, opened heavily and the maid bowed forward again.
"Please enter. The Grand Duke awaits."

As his expression soured further, Medina's brightened. A smile and she gave a little nod of her head forward. She knew she was playing with fire, but, for now, she was safe from it's burn and she knew that, should all of this go south for her, the feel of Zannrick's blade through her neck would be probably deserved. It hurt to think about and she smiled all the same as they were led away.

The door was intimidating.

Medina's face paled a little and she looked at the maid, making sure her hair was nice, the dress was perfect. "I've never been intimidated by a door before," She murmured, hands grabbing her dress before she breathed out and let it go.  At being told to enter, Medina walked forward, head up, shoulder's back.

While she wasn't raised as a lady, she was raised in a decent household, so manners table manners were important. Now, eyes still on the ground, watching where she walked, Where was she supposed to go? A brief glance up and she blew out a breath, "I think this room is as big as the first floor of my house," she said, blinking around at it.

She was on her own at this point, but Zannrick took his position just inside the door. His glare was hard and impenetrable, unlike the frolicking light that danced across the long lines of candelabra's that stretched hte length of the great feasting table. The room was large, and the table, impressive in it's own right as it took up the majority of it's length. Yet there being dozens over of candles to light her way, at the far end, at the very head of the table, appeared the Grand Duke, seated and alone.

Medina's golden gaze followed the candles.

Did he always have meals like this? Light up so lovely but all alone? No, Medina looked away briefly, admiring the decor. Until recently he'd had a wife to share meals with. Swallowing thickly, she walked towards the Grand Duke, standing to his side. "I'm not sure where I should sit," She admitted quietly, "I can also feel your man glaring holes into the back of my dress," She finally stage whispered, looking over her shoulder before turning back to the Grand Duke.

It was odd, being around him all... Dressed. Who knew that would be a strange occurrence to have with someone.

Calent nodded, but gestured to a chair two from his left. It was the only one with a real place setting.
Title: Re: Hope is Born [M]

Medina sucked her lower lip into her mouth, between her teeth and looked to the place setting. How had she missed that? Probably all the beautiful candles. The lack of talking made it feel like she was in a library and she took in a breath before taking the chair out and seating herself - a little awkwardly because she had to hop-scoot to get her chair in. Stubbornly she'd waved off help. If she couldn't pull her own damn self into a chair looking a bit silly in front of the Grand Duke, who else was going to do it?

"Are we... Not going to converse?" She asked, hesitant, " I'd... Like to know before I try to strike up conversations. Usually dinner was when we --" Medina stopped, smiled and sat back, hands in her lap and back straight. Right. Being polite. It was, oddly different, when it was at the dinner table. Anywhere else and she'd chat her head off.

If Calent seemed offended by any of the way she was acting, or not acting, he hadn't shown it. But her sudden dialogue gave him reason to pause as he stared at her. The hint of smile danced on his deep, green eyes; something perhaps aided by the flurry of candles all around them.

"It is not inappropriate to speak here," he went on, voice quiet, guarded almost. Perhaps she wasn't the only one feeling the weight of Zannrick's stare from across the room. A servant came by and poured the wine.

"Please," he gestured with his own cup. "Drink. It's only Connlaoth's finest."

Wine.

Medina gave a polite smile.

She'd never been one for alcohol. It all kind of tasted, well, bad to her. While her brother indulged occasionally Medina had tried once in their youth and never again. So, to be polite she nodded and took a sip. It was probably very good for what it was, but Medina tried her best not to pull a face and gently put her glass back to the table. Clearing her throat.

"Wow," She said, licking her lips, "That... Sure is something." What did people say about wine? Another sip to show just how cultured she was and she licked her lips before setting it down again. When was the last time she ate? It went... The cell. To the room Calent was in. A few sessions of... Medina blushed at the memory. No food. Suddenly, she realized how hungry she was and she puffed out her cheeks before she let a breath out.

Apparently, with her realization of hunger went her table manners. "Is it true?" She finally quipped, she'd heard about the Grand Duke, she'd just... Never seen him before their rainy night together, "That you write music?" Impulsively, she went for another sip of wine, drank it, resisted making another face and placed it down again.

If he were offended, or amused, by her obviously display of uncertainty, he made no comment of it,but sipped casually of his own wine. At her query, though, he raised his brows and nodded.
"Yes, most pieces are composed for piano, but a good dozen are for the violin as well."
Title: Re: Hope is Born [M]

Medina smiled.

The more of the wine she sipped the less like awful it tasted. "I was trying to teach myself piano," She smiled, "For Hope. My mother was Adelan," a look at the wineglass in her hand, then her hand, the darker tone than any Connlaothian lady, "And she'd sing us a lullaby. And I wanted to play that for him," She smiled at Calent over another sip of her wine. Then she ventured further after her little story, "Is there a chance I'd ever... Hear any of them?"

Calent seemed like a passionate guy and if what he was like in bed was anything like how he played an instrument it was at least Mostly Decent.

He stared at her as she sipped, watching as she rambled on. He wondered what strange destiny brought this all about. A woman, a stranger, one night in the rain. And Hope.

He looked down at his glass, thoughts interrupted as a servant appeared and refilled both their cups. As the servant stepped away, the Grand Duke stared over at Medina for a long time before taking another drink.

"I could be curious to ask the same."
At least on piano. He had heard the hummed song before. A lullaby.

Medina flushed.

"Oh..." she trailed off, another sip of wine. It was making her head tingly but she gave Calent a little shy smile. It was easier to just... Have sex with the guy than it was to talk to him. "I..." Medina looked away, at a candle, "I'd love to show you. I might be biased but I've always loved it. Maybe one day Hope will sing it to his children," Medina shrugged and another sip of wine.

Then she put her hands in her lap, "Does nobility drink wine for dinner?" She stage whispered at him, "I'm finding my head a little swimmy."

He let her speak. He didn't have much to say, or perhaps he didn't know what he should, or wanted to. He didn't reply right away about the wine, but the doors opened soon after, and a line of servants came in with a presentation of platters set before them. And after they were set in the middle, their lids removed, and the pair would soon be overwhelmed by the savory smells of pheasant, beets, and other delicate steamed vegetables and prepared meats.

"I hope this answers your question," he went on, and gestured for the servants to begin to serve the pair, and soon meat was carved and portions laid out beautifully on each of their plates.

Surely the servants got to eat what Calent didn't finish. There was too much food here for one man, too much still for an added guest. Medina gave a little nod to Calent before she - probably rudely - took a bite of food. So far she'd had simple meals brought to the room she'd been in. Before now she hadn't eaten in a while.

The moan Medina made from her first bite of food would probably sound familiar to Calent (and by way of guarding a previous door, familiar to Zannrick, too.) She chewed and swallowed, eyes closed. Another sip of wine. This was a weird form of entertainment on its own.

"I couldn't begin to name some of the spicies," she commented before she took another bite, "I'd never been envious of you before but I might start to be. This is wonderful."

At first all he could do was stare, not even able to take a bite himself. He wanted to stop her, to correct her and remind her to at least use her fork but there was something about the way she ate, took to the food that....
Even as cold as he was, hardened over...
His lips cracked into a smile and though he was silent, it was evident in his eyes he was laughing.

"And the lavish palace pales in comparison to the foods of a Grand Duke?"

Medina gave a pleased little hum and wiped her hand off on a napkin - though she was sorely tempted to lick her fingers and stare at Calent. Taking up her utensils she looked at his smile and she warmed up a little. Her situation was odd to be sure, but she could make the best of it.

The best of it was clearly to bother the Grand Duke until he got tired of her schenanigans and kicked her out. "Yes," she nodded, a more polite and ladylike bite of food this time, another pleased little moan, "I've been spoiled for all other food," and she finished her second glass of whine and ate another bite of food. "I'll never have such pleasure from another meal again, I'm doomed."

His smirk was there, barely, as he looked at her.
"I'd hate to see your reaction to something more opulent." And he moved to cut into his own food.
Title: Re: Hope is Born [M]

A small tilt of her head, she'd caught his smirk - being the faux observant creature that she was. Mostly she caught it because in between staring at her delicious food she'd been staring at him. It was interesting, getting to know the man. Would they get along? Did they have anything in common? Even on a very base level? Medina didn't think so, but if she was going to be here she'd at least try to become... Friends? Maybe? Did he need those?

Did he want those?

Another bite of food and another pleased little hum, "It gets fancier than this?" She teased, "And if you'd hate to see it, I promise to keep it to myself. I'm good at keeping secrets." A sly look over the candle light and she resumed eating.

Secrets.
He choked on his food and turned from her, coughing a few more times into his napkin before glancing her way and taking down a long few gulps of wine.

"Or maybe you just talk to much," he said, clearing his throat and gesturing for more wine.
"I could always have the cooks make you something simpler."

Medina dropped her fork when he coughed and she almost got up so she could smack him on the back.

"Goodness me, I wasn't talking about you," A tilt of her head, "Perhaps the wine has loosed my tongue." A shake of her head and she smiled again, her own wine glass being refilled to which she took another sip. It was good. Or at least it was good after she'd drank enough to get a delightful buzz from it. "Didn't you share secrets with friends when you were young? Your siblings?" Medina smiled and placed her glass down, realizing she'd practically scarfed back her food. "That is true though, that I talk too much," She bit her lip and looked away, "I find myself chatty when I've been without conversation for a while."

Medina flushed.

It was a becoming colour on her, the red that tinged her cheeks and she gave him a long look before nodding. "My brother liked whiskey. Or rum... Or something, I tried it once but I didn't like it and..." Medina tucked her head down and placed her hands in her lap, "I'll... I'm sorry, I'll be quiet so you can enjoy your meal."

Title: Re: Hope is Born [M]

Medina gave Calent a curious look, an eyebrow raised. Would she enjoy her meal if she didn't speak? Medina looked at her plate, still half full, it had tasted wonderful, but... It besides that it seemed more like clock work. Something she had to do so she didn't starve. "Usually, my brother and I would converse about the day over dinner. The dress designs I'd gotten. The very odd fashion taste of some nobility," Medina smiled, a far away look in her eyes, "Towards the end of my pregnancy it would be little updates on Hope and how he'd been kicking like he was trying to march." Swallowing carefully she gave a simple shrug.

"I could enjoy my meal in silence, maybe not often, and... Perhaps not entirely but..." Medina closed her mouth and picked up her utensils again and gave Calent a hesitant smile, not wanting to ruin his enjoyment out of the meal. She couldn't fault him for being agitated at her, she certainly was outside of his routine.

Odd thing of it was he showed no irritation. He simply commented very off the cuff like, and naturally to what he observed. They were both from opposing worlds and as he listened, he took it in. Sure, nobles conversed at meals, but it was... different. Most meals, even with Kathryn, were spent quietly. He himself enjoyed the quiet, or at least he had told himself he had.

He always had so much on his mind. Was it she cleared his head when around? Was it a good thing she was a distraction? He cleared his throat and sipped a little more before going back to his meal.

"I suppose you both were very busy."
Title: Re: Hope is Born [M]

Both?

Medina smiled, "I... I made and designed dresses and suits sometimes," she said, "I had a few noble women customers. My brother was a doctor and he ran a sort of... Clinic, out of our home."  There was no hesitation. Medina had been proud of her work and dedication. Both Savage siblings had done well in their chosen field.

"Of course, once I got pregnant I couldn't work as often." A little frown, "And people asked questions," Medina shrugged and returned to her meal, "We weren't rich, but we made do and we worked hard for what we had..." Her hand smoothed over her stomach, amazed that only a short while ago she'd had a child inside her. One who was hopefully sleeping contently somewhere nearby. Hopefully.

"It isn't like having a country on your shoulders but..." Medina shrugged, taking a sip of wine, "it was easier when were supporting one another." A little frown and she thought of Fred, she hadn't heard from him since the first letter of confirmation, a short letter that was basically 'I understand.' Medina went quiet after that and turned to her meal.

Medina smiled at his obvious attempt at being kind but she shook her head.

"I don't think..." Medina sighed and looked at Calent over their meal, "That's a lovely offer but... I'm sure Fred would decline." Clearing her throat this time she finished her meal off in a few easy bites and gave a sigh, the wine making her tingly and her cheeks warm. "Thank you for the meal," She said softly, offering a friendly smile.

He was nearing the end of his own dish and cast a small smile her way when she thanked him for the meal. He dabbed his lips off with his napkin and raised a hand to summon a servant.
"Don't thank me yet. Dessert has yet to be served."

Dessert?

Medina's eyebrows went up.

"I... Wasn't aware dessert was part of the night," She added, giving Calent a long heated look that she hadn't even realized she'd been giving him until a moment too late. A quick look away, hands on her lap. Apparently wine made her much more eager to stare at him. Sure he was covered in scars but... Medina chewed on her lower lip and cleared her throat. Just don't look at him.

She can't stare at him if she didn't look at him.

"So, I'll thank you after dessert," She nodded, "Understood."

What she implied sent a burn clear to his ears. The atmosphere grew tense, and the servant placed a silver platter before them, revealing layers of chocolate cake mixed with all sorts of fruit and fine sugared shavings. A portion was cut, given to both and Calent went on quietly to eat his own slice.
Title: Re: Hope is Born [M]
Post by: Draconian on March 04, 2017, 04:06:06 PM
Well.

That was fancy.

Medina's eyes went wide and she stared at the slice of cake. There had been one occasion she'd had cake, a rare expensive treat that it was and she blinked down at it and bit her lip. It was too pretty to eat but ... It looked so good.

While Calent went about eating his own piece quietly, Medina couldn't help the little pleased noises she made after the first bite. No wonder some of the nobility were plump if they got to eat this often. She tried to take her time eating it politely, except for a strawberry she'd plucked off from her slice, but she'd polished off her piece embarrassingly quickly savoring the last bite with her eyes closed and licking her fork. It was then she realized how full she was and she put her fork down and picked up the plucked off piece of fruit before finally, savoring that as well.

Medina had never been one for envy or jealously but... Today she was feeling it. The big house she could do without. The servants were unnerving to be around. The meal and dessert however. Those were something she was jealous about and she sucked on the strawberry before placing the green bit on her plate and relaxing in her chair.

If there was a way to eat decadent cake with professionalism, Calent shined through. His skills to eat daintily, but also, efficiently, looked to be as if it were by some rules of a book long studied and now, mechanically pleased. He didn't even get an ounce of the sweet creme on his face. But somehow he managed to get just a bit on the tip of his nose.

"It seems you've enjoyed yourself." Was he smiling? It was hard to tell. "Here, feel free to have a second." He gestured or the servant to slice and plate her for a second round.

More cake?

Medina blinked owlishly. "I couldn't possibly," she said softly, reaching to stop the servant before they could make another cut. Her golden eyes darted to Calent and her eyebrows climbed up her forehead and she smiled widely. "You Grace?" Her voice was soft after she'd managed to avoid a second slice.

Then, with no ceremony or warning, she reached over the table and swiped away the sweet creme on his nose. "You're supposed to eat the cake," she said simply, wiping her hand in a napkin before she sat back down again, "not wear it."

The Grand Duke simply stared at her, a bit dumb founded by her actions. Even the servant, who was too close for comfort, stiffened at the woman's actions and turned their head down and stepped away. It took another moment for Calent to grasp what just happened and he flattened his lips and staved off any blush he could. He used his own napkin to wipe at his nose.

He had no idea what or how to comment on that, but begrudgingly knew that it happened when he was distracted by her own noise factory when she was treated to her first slice. He cleared his throat and gestured towards the servants.

"I believe we are finished eating here." And he moved to rise, not looking at Medina, though nodding her way so she'd at least know enough to get up and exit as well. And as he moved towards the door, he could feel the weight of Zannrick's stare upon them.

Though he passed the man, he paused to consider what was to be done the rest of the day.
"Zannrick... if you wouldn't mind escorting our guest back to her room..."
And he said no more before moving down the hall, leaving Zannrick to step before Medina, lest she get any ideas to follow his lord.

"Come, this way. I'm sure the maids will be thrilled you can relieve them of their duties."

As much as he tried, Medina had gotten used to his neutral expression so anything out of the ordinary caught her attention and she smiled at him. Or at least tried not to smile at him. It was dangerous to feel at ease here, but... It was such a human reaction for a man like him and she detested the way her heart gave a little flutter. Medina tucked her head down after a moment before looking up when he spoke.

Slowly she stood, smoothing her hands down her dress and smiling at him - though he didn't look.

It was just as well.

The more human he acted the more she wanted to... Medina closed her eyes after a moment, hands clasped in front of her. Then, she was left at the door. Had she embarrassed him? There wasn't even a good bye or parting words. A confused, perhaps slightly hurt look to Zannrick and she remained behind, watching Calents retreating form. Hm.

"Relieve?" A tilt of her head and she made to follow Zannrick, "Am I going to be... A maid?" A maid that bore the Grand Duke illegitimate children? Then she paused, "Or are you talking about Hope? They keep telling me he's a delight to be around," She pursed her lips, hands clutching at the sides of her skirts.

He hated it: That she spoke to him, tried to converse. Why couldn't she keep her mouth shut? Perhaps if she were at least nobility, she'd know better and might even fit. But this was something that made his skin crawl. The Grand Duke.. how could he let himself go so low as this.

Sure, a woman was a woman, but the Grand Duke could have any kind. Tall and exotic, or petite and skin soft as snow and eyes pretty as the northern skies. But not this. Something didn't seem right, it  didn't feel right, and he knew it all started with her.

He paused at her door rigidly, and gestured for the maid. He sent her off to fetch her child. At least he knew her baby would distract her, and hopefully keep her preoccupied until Calent decided to do away with her- and hopefully not pursue her as he had last night.

Medina was a little put off by Zannrick.

He was, my default, good to be around. Unable to use her magic when he was around the chances of accidents was much less... possible. Still, she side eyed him for a few moments, shoulders back, a curious tilt to her head.

The sight of her child coming down the hall made her stop. A smile bloomed on her face and she gave a greatful look to the pale mordecai. Taking Hope in her arms she meandered to the inside of the room and sat, lookong down at him. Her voice was soft while she whispered secrets to him and he giggled because her lips against his cheek tickled.

How he loathed each minute of it. And she had to leave the door open. When he felt she was sufficiently distracted with her child, he moved and closed the door without a word. At least now he'd hear less of her child cooing to that bastard.

Hah!

Medina: 1. Zannrick: 0

A sly grin was turned to her baby who gave another ring of giggles. Medina gathered him to her chest and moved to lay down. A quick round of snackies and She cuddled sleepy Hope to her chest before she moved to lay down as well, falling into a light doze.

Day had turned to night, and as such, Medina was more or less left alone. By the night hour, Zannrick had been relieved of his post, but maids circulated often, making sure Medina was alright, as well as the babe.

Medina woke with a start at dawn, sitting up and feeling terribly stiff. She'd fallen asleep on the chaise, fully dressed with Hope in her arms.  Sitting up and making the baby fuss, Medina blew out a breath and tried not to be disappointed by the lack of a certain someone.

Foolish girl.

Medina stroked Hope's cheek, still snoozing away against her chest. Gathering him close, she rested her cheek to his head and watched the sun rise. Trying to figure out her situation. And trying to figure out the best solution to her new Grand problem.

"I am so fucked," she sighed at the window, swaying back and forth.

Seeing the candle light in her room, there was a gentle knock at the door.
"My lady?" It was one of the maids, one of the elder ones by the sound of her voice. "Do you need something, dear?"

Medina looked to the door and smiled apologetically.

"I'm sorry," She said softly, "I didn't mean to... Be noisy?" She ended her words in a question, not sure exactly what had made the woman inquire. Maybe the light? A little gnaw on her lip and she looked at the door, opening slowly to peak her head out, Hope asleep again in her arms. "Would it be possible to go for a walk?" She pointed to the window, "The sunrise looks lovely and so does the garden and... A little fresh air might be good for Hope," A little eager smile to the maid.

If it had been Zannrick she'd have demanded to be allowed to go for a walk but... These maids didn't seem to hate her or be disgusted by her so... Medina would play nice, "I imagine he's been stuck indoors like I have. So..." A little smile, "Would it be possible? Please?"

Before the maid could say either way, a voice interjected from behind.
"A sunrise walk sounds lovely."

"Your Grace!" And the servant was soon bowing. But as he looked over at Medina and saw Hope asleep in her arms, he gave the faintest tilt of his head.

"But would it be well to wake him?" his voice was soft, soothing.

Medina stared, wide eyed.

Hated the way her heart lurched and she snuggled Hope closer, who simply snuggled against her skin. Swallowing slowly she was at a loss for words, what could she say? "I..." She blinked, having not expected the Grand Duke at all. "He's..." needed his sleep. But what would the two of them walk around for? A brief look to the maid and Medina gave her a pleading look. This was the maid from before right? The one who'd had children? "What do you suggest?" She said softly, looking at Hope and then the maid, "Sleep or walk? Well, I'd be doing the walking," she licked her lips in an effort to stop talking.

Calent remained where he was as he suggested, "You could have your maid watch over Hope. If you walked with him outside, you might wake him up and upset him."

Did that mean he wanted to walk alone with her?

Medina gave an almost weary look over her should before she pressed a gentle kiss to the babe's head and passed him to the maid who took him. The child slept through it and Medina wanted to commend him for being such a deep sleeper. Medina curled her arms around her middle, finding herself suddenly cold without the warmth of Hope against her chest.

"Alright," She said softly, pursing her lips, "Wouldn't do well for a baby to make him needlessly fussy." Still, a part of her was grumpy. She wanted to watch the sunrise with her child, not... A look to Calent and she moved her hands into the fold of her skirts before she gave him a hesitant smile. "Did you sleep well?" She asked softly, curiously, remember how well he'd slept the night before and how horrified Zannrick had been at the idea.

His lips were flat as he shook his head.
"I rarely sleep." He moved to be at her side, offering out his arm. "Shall we?"

The expression she made mirrored his own.

Her lips were drawn thin and she gave him a curious look before she curled her arm around his. "Of course," She said simply, started to walk, though she let him lead the way - she'd hardly been allowed to explore the palace and while Outside looked right There, she knew it was probably done a silly number of hallways.

"You slept fine the night before," She said softly, curiously, "Did... You not.." She paused, trying to find a nice word, "Exercise ? Last night?" A quiet sly way of asking if he habitually banged maids, no doubt.

Her comment made him frown, and frown deep. she'd even feel him stiffen against her.
"I do not make such things a  habit," he replied cooly. And she was right. The halls were long and winding, but Calent lead her true, not bothering to linger in any which direction as the doormen opened the massive gold gilded doors and in flooded the rich smells of the garden, and the faint pink light of the rising sun.

The reactions from this man were...

Entertaining.

Like he was hearing her say things no one would dare utter near him.

Which, she supposed, was true.

"I see," Medina said softly, curious as to why exactly he'd found her then. That night had been an ... Accident. A series of events that had gotten to out of hand for either of them. The night before though had been intentional and she looked at him, eyes soft, curious. Finally though, they were outside and she got her first good look at the garden and her mouth dropped open.

"It's ..." Even in the morning light it was beautiful and she gently pulled her arm away from Calent to move down the steps to the garden, looking around it. Like if she didn't rush through it it would disappear. A brilliant smile of pleasure over her shoulder and she found herself standing in a beam of sunlight, head tipped back and eyes closed.  "It's beautiful here," She said, voice soft, knowing it would carry to him, "Do you come here often?" She had stopped moving, standing in the light, waiting for him to catch up. Then they could have their walk.

He supposed it was something new for him, to see someone so unaccustomed to  the royal gardens, or even the noble foods, react in such a way as she. It was child like and carefree, something that carried over to him and made him feel like he had less to carry on his shoulders than he truly did. Perhaps it was their differences that attracted him, or even perhaps, the strange similarities unspoken.

He continued to watch her quietly, walking up beside her in stride and continued down the path, just letting her enjoy herself while he just took a moment to simply be. It wasn't everyday he could just step outside, just use the moment to take in the warmth of the rising sun, to take in the smells of the dews rising off the fresh blooming flowers, or take in the way the sun's rays changed colors each moment, each inch that it rose up higher and higher into the sky.

No answer.

Not that Medina could blame him.

Surely he was sick of her questions by now so she didn't take it personally. Very few things were taken personally around this man. Medina supposed it was because it still hadn't quite sunk in that this man, this father to her child was... A slight wince, her face warmed by the morning sun. Medina's hair hung down her back, straight even after it had been braided the day before.

After the night of holding Hope, her arms felt empty and her chest was cold.

It didn't take long to catch up with Calent in the garden, falling into step beside him. He was tall but... So was she.  A brief look to him and a quiet inhale of breath. "This is more lovely looking than you wearing cake," She teased softly, looking at his nose before turning to a flower bud, still closed up tight and covered in morning dew.

At her remark, he simply turned at her, still not speaking.
"It was a most unusual situation," he went on coolly, eyes falling across the neatly trimmed hedges and other shrub sculptures that came into view. But what was set out amongst them all was the large pool in the center, with a gushing fountain, seven tiers high, that sparkled in the pink sun light.

Unusual situation.

Medina grinned, looking at him before she followed his gaze and...

Water.

Medina's fingers itched to slip her hands into it. Zannrick wasn't nearby and while she was sure there were many mordecai scattered about the palace  there wasn't one in the immediate area and Medina looked at the fountain with a strange longing. A step back, a moment to calm and she just looked at it.

"It's... Certainly grand," She stated simply, moving closer to it to lean over and look at it before she sat along the side, dipping her fingers into it and swirling her fingers through it before she lifted her hand and flicked the water to Calent. It didn't go very far, probably not even far enough to hit him but... Medina decided she liked throwing him off for good or bad. So far, it's all been bad, and she had a devilish smile on her face.

And just the littlest flecks of water landed upon his face. He frowned and used his hand to wipe them away, just staring at her, frowning at her smile before turning away.

"Sometimes I wonder if you've forgotten you're a guest in the most wealthiest place in all of Connlaoth." Of course it was grand. Did she think someone of such high standing lived in a dirt hut?

So stoic.

His frown only made Medina smile wider and when he turned away there was the softest of chuckles. Her fingers moved back to the water and for a second, just a second, she let it swirl around her fingers before she pulled her hand out and wiped the water off on her dress.

"Does that bother you?" Medina asked softly, standing up. Her hair tumbled over her shoulder in sheet of dark brown, the fabric of her skirt giving away the fact that she was walking towards him, "It's a lovely place, but it isn't mine and while I can appreciate it I'm not going to fall over myself for simple objects..." She lifted a hand to tap at her lips, "I will for food though. Did I thank you for supper last night? Because Thank You for inviting me. I'm sure you instantly regretted it," She grinned, teasing.

He cleared his throat, stiffening his stance and avoiding her gaze for a moment to stave off any flush.

"If I were of a lower class, I'd know my place, and know the value of positions above my own."
He looked at her again, studying her as she smiled, as care free, as unclaimed as the winds...
Winds? He set his frown deeper.

Winds did as they wanted. Winds shaped and destroyed, even comforting those on a hot day to cool them off, or remind them just how harsh the winter was- and that money or status... everyone was affected by the wind, couldn't stop it...

She was no wind, not in all of it's regards. But he hated he couldn't stop himself from looking her over, and reliving the memory of that one night free of his castle walls where there were no labels, no barriers, no positions, no war....
and no title. He was just a mind, as free forming as the wind.

But the wind was calm, non existent that morning. No, he had to shake off that thought. The winds were nothing of his concern.

"It bothers me, yes," he admitted. "A woman in your position should know her place."

Should have been offended.

Medina chose not to be. As a man who was raised with titles and lables it was easy to see this from his point of view. So, Medina nodded, tucking her hands behind her back while she swayed to a soundless tune.

"Perhaps its my Adelan heritage," she smiled, "I do value your position. I imagine its very stressful and taxing. Everyone wants your attention all the time. Theres never enough time in the day to do everything and," she finally stopped swaying, standing in front of him. A hand reached out like she was going to hold his but she stopped short and let it fall back to her skirts.

"Nothing will be good enough. I value what you do,"  perhaps misguided and tyrianicle but...  "I know my place. My name is Medina Savage. Mother of Hope. I may not be nobility - ever - But... The way we met," she smiled then, "It changed everything. When I look at you, I don't see your position. I... See a man, lost in the storm."

Worse than a child!

She hoped to all the stars in the sky Hope wouldn't have his fathers stubborn streak. Or at least use it for good. "Calent!" Medina picked up her skirts and shuffled after him, flushed before she caught up and walked beside him. "I cant fix it if I dont know what went wrong. Do you not like being reminded you have a stressful life?" While she had long legs, Calent still out paced her and she had to shuffle along quickly, "I just... Wanted to tell you I gain nothing from this."

Well. Gain nothing but being the Grand Duke's Sort Of Mistress.

Her voice was soft and she let her hand close around his arm, "I..." She let go before her hand fell away again, "I'm sorry I told you about Hope. I didnt... Medina pursed her lips and they walked for a whil, her hand slowly moving to curl her arm around his while they walked. Still, the morning air was crisp and Medina looked around for a moment. "Want to make love under a bush?" She piped up, voice quiet but not quiet enough for it to count.

He tensed at her words, stopped and she'd feel his breath hitch. Then she might feel it first, the casual nod, to consent. And she'd find herself being guide from the path, going deeper, pushing past tall shrubs and trees towards green shadows. Did he even know where he took her? Did even he knew where he went?

It didn't matter. He didn't want to think. But even as he began to move, to unlace his pants- he paused....
his mind drifted over so many thoughts and he grit his teeth and began to tighten the laces, rather them letting them become open and hang loose as he turned from her, burying his face into his hand.

Medina had intended to only rile him up. Push a button and make him angry. So, the little nod caught her off guard and she gasped softly when he began to lead her through the labyrinthe of bushes and trees. His name was a soft noise in her lips and finally when they stopped...

"Calent?" Her voice was soft and she pressed a hand to his shoulder, thumb moving up and down. "It's okay," Medina moved to look at him, moving her hands to his wrists, "no one's here but me, remember? You don't have to be made of stone with me."

Medina took a breath, studying him. Curious. She let him push away and she just let her arms hang down, sure he pushed away but she took a step towards him. "He's fine with the wet nurse," she said, wasnt that what they always told her?

Gently, though she kept her hands strong, she caught his hands before they could do anymore damage to the laces. Medina just watched after him.

"Was it your duty to bump into a strange woman and have sex in the middle of a storm?" She asked conversationally, curious. Interested. "Did I seduce you with my wily ways?" Medina followed after him not unlike a duckling, right on his heels. "Are you afraid?"

He stopped, angry.. upset by her words before turning around and roughly grabbing her by her wrists and yanking her near.
"No, I took you as a man," he growled at her, voice dangerous, almost savage. She was pulled against him- close enough to feel his warmth, feel even his need before he threw her hand down.
"A man weak from years of this. A man weak from years of this!" he screamed, and if he could do it, he'd punch a wall, punch someone but in the end, there was just her-
and he wouldn't strike her- no.

She was not the cause of his ire. If anything, she elicited too much she should not. And with eyes wild with anger, he grabbed her again, hands  gripping her by the facea nd pulling himself in close to smash his lips hungrily against hers.

The screaming caught her off guard but... In an odd way she was proud of him. A little emotion never hurt and the poor man probably bottled it all up. Medina didn't return the kiss, simply closed her eyes and when she finally pulled away, her hands were on his elbows.

"It's okay to be weak sometimes," she whispered, looking at him a little concerned , "You can be weak around me. You know you can trust me." Though why did she want that? Medina moved her arms from his elbows to his waist and she looked down briefly, hating herself. This man and his ideals were why she would be drawn and quartered in an instant. Her child sent to a camp.

"Trust me, Calent. I bore us a child and the only people who know its yours are my brother who would die for me and people you've told." She squeezed his sides, "You're allowed to be weak. Because if you're strong all the time you'll just break."

Back to cold and calculating.

Medina nodded, gnawing on her bottom lip for a moment before gathering her skirts and heading back to the palace. To the only reason she would ever stay in a place like this. Her son.
