Serendipity / Cindy Hargrove, Ranger Trainee
December 03, 2021, 04:00:11 AM
____________QUICK STATS
Name: Cynthia "Cindy" Hargrove
Age: 14
Gender: Female
Species: Human
Ethnicity: Verdan
Height: 5'1"
Weight: 99 lbs.
Occupation: Ranger Trainee
Residence: Algieri, Altas Verde
Favorite Food: Milkshakes
Alignment: Neutral Good

Art by me!
Character Theme:
Sore Winner

____________IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description:
Cindy Hargrove is a short, athletic teenager with dirty blonde hair. I'll write the rest later, just look at the image for now

Cindy's spirit stone is ametrine! She wears hers on a beaded bracelet.

Personality:
Bursting with energy, Cindy is beyond eager to prove herself. She has a competitive streak a mile wide, and has a bad habit of trying to make a game of everything she does- "I'll race you there!" may as well be her catchphrase. She brags alot, and gets resentful around people her age who have accomplished more than she has.

While not a bad kid by any stretch, Cindy does have a tendancy of getting aggressive with people. She often hits people when she gets upset, and many of the children she grew up with considered her a bully. Her parents hope that serving her province as a Ranger will help to temper her anger issues, though whether or not giving Cindy access to dangerous weapons will make her less violent remains to be seen.

Cindy can get a bit boy-crazy at times. Her advances are remarkably straightfoward however, and she usually ends up scaring away her crushes.

Relationships:
Cindy is a trainee in the Ranger Core! She's much to young to go on any missions and spends the majority of her time doing combat training. She's supposed to be studying Atas Verde's provincial laws as well, but she's always finding excuses to get out of doing this.

Cindy has a twin brother named Liam! She has a one-sided rivalry with him, and tries her hardest to one-up him at every turn.

Magic/Abilities:
Like all Rangers, Cindy carries an enchanted weapon- in her case, the Shoes of Entropy. Anything struck by these tap shoes will decay at the point of impact- rock crumbles into gravel, dirt turns to sand, metal rusts and flakes away, etc. The enchantment used in the weapon's creation is incredibly potent, and the shoes are infamous among the Rangers for being too dangerous for anybody to control effectively. Most expect Cindy to come to her senses and swap the shoes for a more reasonable weapon, but she has so far refused to do so...

A childhood of playing sports and gymnastics classes have given Cindy a flexible, athletic build. She's always doing cartwheels and handstands, seemingly just to prove to people that she can.

History:
Being a twin isn't easy. Growing up, Cindy was made to share everything with her brother Liam- including the affection of her parents. To make matters worse, the two siblings were complete opposites of one another, and would frequently butt heads of the most minor of differences. This caused Cindy to develop a desire to outdo her brother in every regard, and she'd frequently attempt to one-up every accomplishment he had.

So when Liam was accepted into Wyrdwood, Cindy felt it was only natural to try and beat him somehow- and ended up joining the Ranger Core. Picking out the most dangerous weapon available to her, the girl vowed to bring fame and glory to her family- more fame and glory than a wizard could ever bring.

Wester Highlands / Something From Nothing (Solo)

~Continued from Left Out In The Cold~

While Susie had ridden in carriages before, there was something uniquely different about the one she was in now. It was too unreal- the wheels made no sound as they glided over the road, sailing over bumps and potholes with nary a jostle. Looking out the window, the young girl watched as the scenery slowly changed, the forested school grounds disappearing behind them as the road they were on took them through a snow-covered meadow.

Finally, the carriage began to slow to a halt. Juniper, who had stayed silent for the duration of the trip, stood up and stretched her arms. "Look like we're here." she said lazily. "Fiorina? The door, if you would."

There was a shuffling outside as the driver dismounted, and the door to the carriage swung open. Susie instinctively shrunk back as a grotesque figure came into view, though the evening sun obscured the details of their face. After a few moments of hesitation, a horrifically burnt hand was offered to her sponsor. Juniper accepted it graciously, allowing the disfigured servant to assist her off the carriage before beckoning for Susie to follow.

As the young girl cautiously stepped forward, the drivers features became more visible. The woman was a Kulshedra- a kind of dragon-person that Susie had only ever seen in books. Burn scars covered half of her body, blackened scales peppered by small flecks of green. Seemingly having noticed the girl's terrified expression, Fiorina gave Susie an timid smile before lifting the redhead up and out of the carriage. "There you go." she said softly. "Nothing to worry about."

"When you've finished staring at her, we really should be heading inside."

Juniper's voice broke through the Susie's thoughts like an ice pick, and the girl forced herself to look away from the Kulshreda. "R-right." she stammered, walking hastily to catch up with her patron. "Sorry..."

"Quite alright." the noblewoman breathed, the ghost of a smile on her lips. "I'm sure Fiorina is used to it by now."

Butterflies and Hurricanes

____________IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description:
Æthelred Veilheart is tall, dark, and handsome. His nose has a distictive curve to it, almost reminiscent of a falcon's beak. He wears ornate robes that have been enchanted to glitter like the night sky.

Personality:
Æthelred Veilheart is confident and proud, with more than enough talent to justify it. Considered a prodigy in his youth, he is now seen as one of the country's most skilled mages- a rising star who will shape the future for generations to come. Æthelred takes this reputation seriously, and has dedicated his life to passing on his knowledge to the next generation of Serenians.

As a teacher, however, Professor Veilheart is absolutely ruthless. He has zero tolerance for what he percieves as weakness- if he believes a student is struggling, he'll deliberately increase their workload to try and force them to drop out of his class. In his eyes, you either sink or swim- there is no inbetween. "Astrology Level 1" is unironically considered the most difficult class at Wyrdwood because of this, and many students refuse to take it as an elective due to the professor's reputation.

Relationships:
Æthelred is a member of the Broken Seal, a secret society dedicated to maintaining the power of serendipity's oldest wizards through forbidden magic. His dedication to their cause has led to him to becoming one of it's more prominant members as of late.

Æthelred is the pride of House Veilheart, his reputation (and his connections to the Broken Seal) having brought fame and wealth to the family name. His accomplishments as a knight have cased him to be viewed as something of a local hero in Moonspear, and even many outside the province have heard of him.

Æthelred's older brother is a knight in the Order of the Moon. (PM me if you want to play this character!)

Æthelred is quite taken by his fellow professor Anwen ferch Rhys, although whether she reciprocates is another story...

Beatrix Evans is Æthelred's current problem student. Beyond her obvious attitude problems, her homework assignments are a bit too well-written for the professor's liking. He's convinced she must be cheating, and has kept her grades low despite the apparent quality of her work. Despite this, she refuses to drop his class...

Magic/Abilities:
Æthelred is an astromancer- a mage with the ability to control cosmic energy. The exact definition of "cosmic energy" is unclear, as are the limitations of his ability. He can use his magic to create constructs out of constellations and summon comets, among other things.

Æthelread is a skilled astrologer- so skilled, in fact, that simply glancing at the night sky is enough to give him a glimpse as to what will happen in the next few seconds.

History:
Born to lesser nobles in Moonspear, Æthelred was expected to be the perfect child. Any game he played, he was expected to win. Every class he too, he was expected to ace. Every challenge he faced, he was expected to overcome- all so he would bring pride to the family name.

Which he did.

Passing Wyrdeood's placement test with flying colors, Æthelred quickly became regarded as one of the most gifted students of his era. Upon his graduation he'd accumulated a number of awards and accolades- as well as earning the eye of the Broken Seal. The young man was taken by the secret society's ideals, and agreed to represent his family in the organization.

For a time Æthelred served them as an agent, becoming a knight under House Orlov in order to keep tabs on Moonspear's military and nobility. In his seven years of service, his reputation and prestige grew even further- to the point where "Sir Veilheart" became a household name in the province. However, he'd ultimately decide to retire and return to Wyrdwood to work as a professor. He felt he'd be more use to them as a talent scout- after all, if anybody knew what a prodigy looked like, it was him.

Serendipity / Priscilla Kingshield, Future Prodigy

____________QUICK STATS
Name: Priscilla Kingshield
Age: 14
Gender: Female
Species: Human
Ethnicity: Serenian
Height: 5'2"
Weight: 96 lbs.
Occupation: Student
Residence: Wyrdwood Academy
Favorite Food: Filet Mignon
Alignment: Lawful Evil

Character Theme:
Prelude

____________IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description:
Priscilla is a slender girl with jet black hair. There are deep bags underneath her flame-colored eyes, as if she's been staying up until the small hours of the morning. She wears the traditional blue robes Wyrdwood provides- though she makes it very clear that she would be wearing something else if they let her.

Priscilla loves shoes, and owns a large collection that she's constantly adding to. Her favorite is a pair of enchanted boots that leave smoldering footprints wherever she walks.

Personality:
Raised by nobility, Priscilla Kingshield holds herself to a higher standard than most her peers at school. She is haughty and arrogant, and is extremely condescending to those she views as beneath her. She delights in putting others down, espescially if they excel in areas where she herself has failed.

Priscilla puts a lot of time into her studies, oftentimes staying up very late to practice her magic. Despite this her grades are middling, and she gets very edgy around students who have more natural talent than her.

Priscilla loves fashion, and uses her absurdly large allowance to buy herself new clothes. She often pays designers for custom outfits, probably having blown hundreds of suns on commissions by this point. It's been suggested to her that she may want to take up fashion design as a hobby herself, but she's never taken this advice seriously.

Relationships:
Priscilla's parents are very high-ranking nobles. While they do love her, she privately fears that their love may be conditional.

Priscilla's older brother Plutonius is probably the most popular student at Wyrdwood. While she loves him dearly, she can't help but resent all the attention he gets. It is not uncommon for people to befriend her just to try and get closer to him.

Priscilla met the Queen of Serendipity at a party once! Their interaction lasted for all of ten seconds, but she'll never let anybody forget that she "knows" the Queen. If you ask Priscilla for her opinion on the Queen however, she'll very quickly tell you that she didn't like her. It's very curious...

Susie Rainfeather is Priscilla's bunkmate. The peasant girl annoys her to no end- especially now that Susie is starting to overtake Priscilla in her studies.

Priscilla has a pet hamster! Her name is Soleil, and she's very cute.

Magic/Abilities:
Priscilla has elemental magic- specifically control over magma. This power is very weak, to the point of basically being useless. She's quick to remind people that her magic will be a big deal someday, and gets very upset if you suggest otherwise.

explaination
"Now wait just a minute!" you're saying. "How is magma a weak power? It's fucking magma!"

While it's true that magma is absurdly destructive, it typically can't be found on the earth's surface apart from in volcanoes. Priscilla does have the ability to create magma, but this require intense effort- making a teaspoon's worth of lava would take about 15 minutes, and if she lost concentration during that period she'd have to start all over again. She also has no way of keeping the magma hot after making it, causing it to harden after only a few minutes. Even if Priscilla were to spend a full day making a gallon of lava, she would only be able manipulate a few cup's worth at a time. Quite simply, her power is not worth the effort.
[close]
Priscilla isn't bothered by high temperatures, and cannot be burned by anything- probably the only parts of her power that are actually useful.

Priscilla comes from money-her parents could probably buy Wyrdwood if they really wanted to.

History:
The second child of the Kingshield family, Priscilla grew up in the shadow of her older brother. Plutonius was the favored child- he was handsome, confident, and most importantly, he was the one who'd carry on the family name. Priscilla was always treated like an afterthought by her parents, who had clearly been hoping for a second son. The girl craved her parents affection, but would always find herself to be second-best no matter what she did...

Untill her affinity for magma was discovered! Now her parents fawn over her just as much as they do her brother- possibly moreso! As soon as she was old enough she was sent to Wyrdwood, with the understanding that she'd use the resources available there to gain complete mastery of her abilities...

She's been at school for less than a year at this point, but already Priscilla is beginning to worry. The other students her age have already shown remarkable improvement, while she's still stuck at where she started. What will her parents think if she doesn't catch up soon? What if she can't catch up at all?

Spoiler
The Kingshield family has privately hated the Serenian Royal Family for several decades now. Nobody alive can even remember where this grudge originated from, but it's gone on for so long that at this point the Kingshields would like nothing more than to see the Di'Veerans crushed and driven from the throne. Unfortunately the current Queen is an incredibly powerful mage, which kept the family from attempting any sort of coup.

Or it did until Priscilla's magic came into the picture. Magma was the perfect counter to Qiana's cosmic magic, they realized- or it would be, once the girl perfected it!

It's been made extremely clear to Priscilla what her role in their eventual coup would be, and exactly what would befall their family should she fail. The weight placed upon her shoulders goes beyond a simple fear of disappointing her parents- if she fails to kill the Queen of Serendipity, she won't have a family to disappoint.

Character Theme:
Long Road to Ruin

_______IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description:
While not conventionally unattractive, King Robuhara's appearance heavily contributes to how he's percieved by his people. His now greying hair still has tinges of red in it, and his eyes are a dull shade of green. He seems to have trouble smiling, and often looks unhappy when he does so. His ornate robes and headgear somehow manage to look drab on him, to the point where he was once mistaken for a servant by visitors.

Personality:
King Robuhara is a quiet, thoughtful leader. He carries himself with an air of modesty, and is sometimes perceived as being shy or demure. He rarely speaks his mind fully, and keeps his personal opinions to himself unless asked. He has a very self-deprecating sense of humor, which many find unbefitting of a ruler. Some believe these traits are indicitive of him having a reluctance to take charge- a view that has become increasingly popular as time goes on.

On a personal level Junichiro is kind, albeit a bit distant. He has trouble forming close bonds with others, and those he does have are few and far between. He prefers the books to the company of others, and privately laments that his duties leave him little time to read.

Relationships:
"King Robuhara kinda sucks" is probably the only thing Rulastinians can actually agree on, though everybody seems to have different reasons for thinking this.

Junichiro's older brother Akihiko was killed by a Suturigoi in his teenage years. He was a natural born leader, and all who knew him -including Jun himself- believe he would have been a better ruler.

Junichiro's wife Sachiko died while in childbirth, leaving him with a single daughter. Jun has rufused to take another wife out of grief, upsetting those who wished for him to try for a male heir.

Junichiro's daughter is his only heir, and possibly his best friend. She's the most important thing in his life, and he's extremely protective of her. (PM me if you're interested in playing this character)

Magic/Abilities:
King Robuhara is bilingual, fluent in Nhoplani in addition to the standard Embass. He supposedly learned the language "in case Nhoplan ever chooses to come to the table", but most people still think it's weird.

The King carries an ornate silver blade that has been passed down the royal family for centuries. He has trained extensively with it, though he prays he'll never have to use it in actual combat.

History:
As the second child of the royal family, Junichiro was overshadowed by his father and older brother growing up. He embraced this, as lacking the responsibilities of being heir allowed him time to do other things such as reading. His goal in life was to be his brother's advisor- Akihiko was a firebrand, but often needed others to explain the nuances of politics to him. Working together, he figured, the country would be in good hands.

If only things had been that easy.

Akihiko's death was unexpected, and shook the nation to it's core. The Suturigoi were always a threat of course, but for one to claim the Prince's life? Junichiro barely had time to grieve before he was thrust into spotlight as the next rightful heir. The quiet existance he'd enjoyed was snatched from him, and the bookish young prince found himself thrust into a world he simply wasn't suited for...

Eventually, the day he'd dreaded came to pass- his father passed, and his mother stepped down from her position as queen. In the ten years since, Junichiro has proven to be what many feared he would be- an uninspiring, controversial ruler.

Political Views

Domestic Policy:
Relatively new on the world stage, much of Rulastinia's cultural identity is still in it's infancy. Formed by refugees in an unforgiving land, political differences initially took a backseat to basic survival- and to finding a way to kill the monsters that haunted their new home. However, as their darkest days fade behind them, many issues that had previously been ignored have slowly bubbled back to the surface. Rulastinians have increasingly found themselves at odds with one another, and the growing rifts between them show no sign of slowing.

With this in mind, King Robuhara often adheres to a minimalist philosophy. He strongly feels that national policy reforms should never be passed all at once- they must be implemented incrementally, or else the people of Rulastinia will feel alienated and turn on one another. It is also his belief that both sides of any argument are typically rooted in valid concerns, and the best solution will be found somewhere in the middle.

Unfortunately the King's seemingly weak attempts at compromise have given people the impression that he's conceliatory and lacking in any real conviction of his own. Because of Rulastinia's middling faith in him, he's often teetering on the edge of losing his power.

Foreign Policy:
Nhoplan is and always has been the biggest threat to Rulastinia. With only a single mountain range seperating the two nations, many Rulastinians live in a state of constant paranoia. While he does his fair share of sabre rattling and military spending, the King privately believes that his country stands no chance of winning should their conflict with their neighbors run hot- Nhoplan is far more technologically advanced then they are, and seemingly have the power of their gods at their beck and call.

This does not mean King Robuhara has given up.

Knowing full well the damage a divided populace can do to a nation, the King plans to defeat Nhoplan through subversion rather than strength. Under his rule Rulastinia has secretly utilized escaped slaves and their children as spies, sending them back to Nhoplan in order to discreetly spread anti-slavery propaganda. This group, known as "the Soshiki", specifically targets Nhoplani scholars and priests in an attempt to convince them of their own autonomy- without drawing attention to themselves.

This is by no means an easy task, and many Soshiki have been killed for speaking out of turn (or for just speaking at all). However, in the eight years they have been active, fringe ideas such as "the slaves were given a sense of self by the gods in order to help serve us better" have been accepted by a handful of (highly controversial) philosophers. King Robuhara hopes that their ideas will eventually subvert members of the Nhoplani royal family, making it possible for there to be peaceful negotiations between the two countries. Only time will tell if this ever pans out.

Empty Churches

_______IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description:
Details regarding Olivia Wayrest's physical appearence are sparse. She is known to have been very tall, and is believed to have had dark hair. Other physical features vary wildly by account, making it very hard to draw a reliable portrait of her.

Personality:
There is little information available as to the type of person Olivia Wayrest was. The few accounts that exist paint a picture of a quiet, thoughtful woman who seemed to have a bright future ahead of her. Details beyond this are often vague and contradictory- a former schoolmate, for example, described her as "logical to a fault, but with a penchant for the unorthodox."

Relationships:
As most accounts describe Olivia as a loner, there is very little information to go off of regarding her personal relationships. Attempts to track down the woman's parents have proven unsuccessful, as there are no records of Olivia ever being born. There have been claims of a husband existing, but with no evidence available we can only presume this is a false lead. There have also been lines drawn to a woman in Zantaric with the same surname, but any connection to Olivia remains unknown.

Magic/Abilities:
While the majority of her school records have long since vanished, Kia's Garden still has an Academic Achievement Award in Wayrest's name. From it we can ascertain that Olivia was in the top percentage of students in her class, and that Advanced Magical Theory was her strongest subject.

Judging from how she'd later join the Order of the Moon, it's safe to assume that Olivia had at least some experience in combating dark magic. One eyewitness account describes her as being proficient with a rapier, but this has yet to be verified.

History:
For all intents and purposes, Olivia Wayrest does not exist. Public memory of the woman has all but faded since her arrest twelve years ago, and those who knew her personally seem unwilling to discuss her. Her name has been scrubbed from most records and official documents, and openly looking for information about her is a good way to find yourself being watched. Should you ignore all this and continue to dig, you may be able to find few, scattered snippets of data:

  • She was likely born somewhere along the border of Moonspear and Jadenshine.
  • She was accepted to Kia's Garden at a much younger age than considered normal, and was considered a magical and intellectual prodigy by her professors.
  • She either graduated early or dropped out, and joined the Order of the Moon in her early 20s.
  • She was allegedly highly respected among her peers in the Order, but left the group after only a few years for reasons long since forgotten.
  • She was arrested by the Order two years later, after an intense skirmish on the outskirts of Rillaria. While the battle between Wayrest and the Order was witnessed by quite a few people, there is no official record of the event ever having taken place.

Olivia Wayrest effectively vanishes after this incident. There are no explainations available as to why she was apprehended. There are no records of her being placed in prison, nor those indicating an execution took place. Her trail has gone completely cold, and after over a decade of silence it's unlikely we'll ever get a clear answer to who she was.

"This is going to be so cool!"

Hoss trekked through the forest, a smile on her face. Tales of an horrendous beast had sprung up in the surrounding villages- a beast the locals dubbed "Featherjaw". Said beast was becoming a menace- and therefore, in Hoss's mind, it had to be evil. And if it was evil... Then it was Hoss's job to kill it.

"Oh Kia, this will be epic!" the teenager thought excitedly. "First, I'm gonna rush it with my axe and slice it's legs of! Then I'll shoot it a bunch of times, and then I'll cut it in half!"

Suddenly, Hoss heard it- an unearthly howl in the distance. It had to be the beast. Exhilarated, Hoss ran in the direction the noise came from...

...Only to stumble into a clearing and find the beast already dead. The corpse was massive, at least fifteen feet tall. Fresh wounds from some sort of weapon covered it's body- Featherjaw hadn't gone down without a fight.

Hoss narrowed her eyes, pouting. Slowly she began to circle the monster's body, until she finally spotted another person standing nearby. Did they slay this beast?

"Hey! What gives?" Hoss yelled angrily, storming towards the figure. "That was supposed to be my kill!"

Wester Highlands / Feather Dusting (Jess!)

"I want to go home..."

Susie Rainfeather groaned as the morning bell rang, pulling her sheets over her head. The girl's first night away from her parents hadn't been a fun one. Her school pajamas were itchy, her bunk was cramped, and her pillow was far too stiff. She'd only managed to get a few hours of sleep before the sun rose, having spent the majority of the night tossing and turning. Why did they have to get up so early?

After a few minutes, the redhead managed to pull herself out of bed. Her dorm-mates had already woken up and left, seemingly having gotten more sleep than she had. She stumbled to her dresser, rummaging through the drawers until she found her school uniform. Hastily getting dressed, the girl grabbed her book bag and thrust herself out the door, scurrying down the hall anxiously. "I hope I'm not late for breakfast..." she thought, feeling a twinge of panic in her chest. "What if I am? Will I get in trouble? What if- oof!"

Susie turned a corner without watching where she was going slamming into another student. With a cry she fell over, dropping her books on the floor. "Ah! I-I'm so sorry!" she squeaked, scrambling to pick up her things. "A-are you okay? I'm sorry..."

Lore Submissions / Orratilla- Mining Rodents
December 29, 2019, 01:34:36 PM
Orratilla

Orratilla are a species burrowing rodent native to Serendipity's western mountain range. They are a member of the Sciuridae family, and are closely related to both prairie dogs and marmots.

A Rusted Orratilla. This one has made it's home in a vein of copper ore.

Characteristics

Orratilla are small, stocky rodents; typically measuring about a foot long from head to tail. Their fur is very soft, and glitters in direct sunlight. It's snout is flat and pushed in, giving it's face a somewhat grumpy appearance. An orratilla can fold its ears back to prevent dirt from getting inside them while digging.

The dentine in an orratilla's teeth is hyper-compressed, and is comparable to diamonds in structure. It's claws are equally tough, and allow orratilla to effortlessly tunnel through both rock and metal. Like most rodents their teeth are constantly growing, and an orratilla must wear them down daily with the ore they dig up. They take dust baths in the leftover metal filings, giving their coats a metallic sheen.

There are two distict subspecies of Orratilla- Rusted, and Tarnished. Rusted orratilla are smaller in stature, and have grey-brown fur. Tarnished orratilla are somewhat larger, and can be found in shades of gold and silver. Both species are born with stark white fur- it's adult coloration is determined by the ore vein it inhabits. A group of either subspecies is called a "team".

Habitat and Conservation

Habitat Distribution

Orratilla construct and inhabit elaborate tunnel systems known as "mines". These tunnels can be quite expansive, with the largest mines being over half a kilometer in depth.

Orratilla instinctively seek out ore veins when digging, and seem to have an uncanny knack for locating them underground. A single ore vein can sustain an orratilla team for up to ten years, depending on the size. Rusted orratilla prefer veins of iron, copper and tin, while the Tarnished subspecies makes it's home in veins of gold, silver, and pyrite.

While the Rusted orratilla is still somewhat widespread, Tarnished orratilla are critically endangered. Having been hunted to near-extinction for their soft and valuable fur, this subspecies is now found almost exclusively in the province of Altas Verde.

Behavior

Orratilla are social animals, preferring to live in teams of 8-10 individuals. These teams are matriarchal; usually consisting of a single breeding female, 2-3 adult males, and 5-6 juveniles. Upon reaching maturity, young females will be forced out of the team by the elder female to prevent competition. They will then either go on to start their own team, or will be picked off by one of their numerous natural predators.

Orratilla are diurnal, leaving their burrows during the day to forage for food. They are mostly herbivorous, preferring a diet nuts, seeds, and occasionally insects. They store food in their mines, having entire chambers dug out for this purpose. An orratilla stands on it's hind legs while eating, using their front paws to bring food to their mouthes. The average lifespan of an Orratilla is ten years.

When isolated from their preferred ore vein, an orratilla will get agitated and attempt to burrow underground to find a new one. It is currently unknown exactly how an orratilla is able to locate metal, despite researcher's best efforts. Studies conducted by Wyrdwood Academy have proved inconclusive, and beastspeakers who've asked directly have only gotten vague non-answers in reply.

Relationship With Humans

Valued for their beauty, products made from Tarnished orratilla fur are coveted by many Serenian nobles. As high demand has led to the subspecies being overhunted, their increased scarcity has caused prices to skyrocket over the past few decades. Even pyrite-dusted coats- once viewed as a cheap alternative to the silver and gold-dusted varients- has seen a monumental increase in value.

Due to being seen as a provincial symbol, orratilla are a protected species in Altas Verde. As a result, the province is the only place where the tarnished subspecies can still be found in the wild. Hunting orratilla here will result in a hefty fine, or even jail time for repeat offences. Despite this, Tarnished numbers are still concerningly low due to illegal poaching.

Rusted orratilla are generally safe from poachers, but are seen as dangerous pests by miners. While not particularly aggressive, an iron-inhabiting orratilla will trigger a Serenian's natural weakness to the metal when in close proximity to the animal. Though deaths are considerably rare, miners that dig into these orratilla's nests by accident often have no choice but to abandon their prospects entirely.

Orratilla as Pets

Orratilla can make for cute and affectionate pets... so long as you can afford to keep one!

While orratilla have been domesticated in the past, they are notoriously difficult to keep as pets. They must have metal readily available for them to chew, which can quickly get expensive depending on the species being kept. An Orratilla's cage must be made of wood, as the animal will chew through the bars of a traditional metal one and escape. If left unchecked they will instinctively seek out items such as jewelry and kitchenware in order to satisfy their urges. Due to the resources needed to properly care for these animals, Orratilla are typically only kept as pets by wealthy nobles.

It was a chilly Autumn day, and a brisk wind blew through the trees as Wallace hope made his way down the road. The leaves were just beginning to turn orange, having yet to fall off their branches and blow away. The young man gazed at his surroundings wistfully as he walked, enjoying the peace it brought. Darken Vei had always been beautiful this time of year, but he'd rarely gotten a chance to properly take it all in when he was younger...

"What are you waiting for Alex? Just pull it down!"

"I can't, Jason! It's stuck!"

The sound of voices pulled the man from his thoughts. Two children stood by the side of the road, staring up at a large oak tree. Upon getting a bit closer, Wallace could see an expensive looking kite tangled in it's branches. "Ughhh, my dad is gonna kill me..." the boy named Alex whined. "This is his favorite one!"

"You two need help?" Wallace asked, walking towards them. The boys glanced at him quickly, then looked back at the kite.

"It's no use..." the one called Jason said. "It's not like we can just pull harder, it'll rip that way." The boy suddenly looked at Wallace again, eying the man's stave. "Hang on..." he said slowly. "Are you a wizard? Can you like... magic it down?"

"Can you please, Sir?" Alex chimed in, now staring at Wallace excitedly. "I don't want to get in trouble!"

Wallace smiled. "Yeah!" he said, squinting up at the kite. "I can get it down, sure!"

The man closed his eyes, reaching out with his mind as he tilted his stave upwards. The two boys watched him excitedly for a few moments, then grew impatient. "Hey!" said Alex. "Where's the spe- oh Kia..."

The boys attention turned to the ground at their feet, excitedment melting into horror as an emaciated squirrel crawled out the dirt. The tiny zombie moved towards Wallace, who pointed up at the kite. Immediately the squirrel scurried up the tree, grabbing the toy with it's paws. It fidgeted with it for a few moments as it worked to untangle it from the branches, until the kite fell from the tree. "There you go!" the necromancer said happily, turning to look at Alex. "No worries!"

But Alex had already left, dashing down the road in a panic. Jason backed away slowly, shaking his head. "You're one of those bad wizards..." he mumbled softly, eyes as wide as dinner plates. "I'm supposed to stay away from people like you..."

"But... I got it down!" Wallace began, but it was too late. The terrified boy turned to run after his friend, and both soon disappeared from sight. The necromancer sighed glumly as the undead squirrel climbed onto his shoulder. "Nice going, Wallace." he said under his breath. "You ruined everything. Again."

"Grab him!"

Aahva ran through the dimly lit corridor, heart pounding. He had to escape, but he couldn't find the way out! Every path the boy took seemed to lead in a dead end, and backtracking only caused the distance between him and his pursuers to shrink. They were behind him now, footsteps echoing as they gave chase. He ran even faster, legs feeling like they were about to fall off. Feeling a hand snatch at the back of his head, Aahva stumbled...

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Aahva awoke with a yelp as he fell out of his bed, sheets tangled around his legs. He shook his head groggily, groaning as he pushed himself into a sitting position. This hadn't been the first time- he'd had the same dream nearly every other night, and it always ended the same way.

Rubbing his eyes to wipe away the stray tears, the boy stood up and looked out the small window. The moon was still high in the sky, which meant it'd be at least a few hours before he he'd be allowed to eat something. He gazed longingly at the road leading away from the castle before turning away, fists clenched. He'd only been trapped here for a week, and he already hated everything about this place- the magic, the nightmares, the fact that he wasn't allowed to leave...

"Nobody's awake yet..." he realized. He looked out the window once more, then at the door. "Who's gonna stop me if I just sneak out?"

Name: Dominique Cazerne

Ethnicity: Serenian
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 141 lbs.
Occupation: Student and junior Rune Seeker for Wyrdwood's reliquary
Residence: Wyrdwood Academy
Favorite Food: Ground beef and cabbage
Alignment: Neutral Good

Art by me!
Character Theme:
Tubular Bells

_______IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description:
Dominique Cazerne is a curvaceous young woman with long, green hair tied back in a ponytail. She has a button nose, and her starry red eyes are hidden behind a large pair of spectacles. She wears a short blue tunic and kneesocks that push the boundaries of Wyrdwood's strict dress code.

Traders's Tongue is actually Dominique's second language! She grew up speaking Old Serenian, which has left her with a bit of an accent. Most people have trouble placing it, but it could be described as sounding "rural".

Personality:
Dominique is an energetic, daring young woman with a passion for adventure! She loves meeting new people, and will always stand by her friends no matter what. She's easily distracted by new things, and has a bad habit of getting ahead of herself and basing decisions off of assumptions. Dominique will always try to help other people, even when it's a detriment to herself or others.

Dominique's dream is to create a cure for Fell's Curse- a task many before her have tried and failed to accomplish. Despite this she refuses to give up, and is willing to experiment with primordial powers in order to reach her goals...

Relationships:
Dominique's parents are alive and well! They can be a bit smothering at times, but she loves them all the same.

Dominique intensely dislikes the Order of the Moon, viewing them and their methods of containing Fell's Curse as overtly cruel and defeatist.

Magic/Abilities:
Dominique can create her own custom spells! To an extent, at least. She's memorized a sentence fragment in a long-dead fae language, which has different effects depending on her inflection or if she omits certain words. She isn't very good at traditional spellcraft, though- to the point where other students instinctively duck whenever she pulls out her wand.

Dominique is multilingual! Most of the languages she's fluent in are old and dead, though.

History:
In the time before time, language had power. The primordial fae of Serendipity bent the world to their whim through speech alone, as the very words they spoke carried a great magic. A declaration of love would cause the earth to flourish, and in turn an argument could be cataclysmic.

However, language is bound to grow and change with time. The old words were all but forgotten, and the new ones had only a fraction of their magic- if any at all. While a couple of these new words stood the test of time, most would disappear into the annals of history with their predecessors. Now, the few surviving magic words are severely watered down and labeled as "incantations" by scholars...

~~~~~~~~~
Dominique's early life was fairly uneventful. She was born on a cabbage farm, in a small village nestled deep in the Terren Mountains. Completely isolated from wider Serenian society, the girl grew up speaking Old Serenian and paying tribute to fae deities rather than learning the Traders Tongue and worshiping more contemporary gods like Kia.
She was six years old when the man from Fell arrived in her village. It only took a few days for the curse to spread, and soon over half the townsfolk were afflicted with it. Fearing for their safety, the Cazerne family moved to Maestoso while the Order of the Moon was called to deal with the outbreak. When it was safe to return home a year later, Dominique found that the Order had slaughtered the afflicted in order to stop the curse's spread. Rattled, the young girl became determined to find a better way.
Already confident that the Order of the Moon didn't have the cure she sought, Dominique turned to books. After a few years of searching, she found something- an obscure reference to "the power of the First Words" in an ancient tome in an abandoned library. Convinced that this must be the answer, she begged the lord of her barony to send her to school. Having lost family to the curse himself, he quickly agreed upon learning of Dominique's intentions.
Now a student at the prestigious Wyrdwood Academy, Dominique got to work researching the First Words. The library had little to offer on the subject, with the majority of information being cursory at best. With this being said, by her eighth year she was able to compile enough information to lead her own expedition to an ancient ruin deep in the forests of Ravensway. While she initially found nothing of note, Dominique took the time to make a charcoal rubbing of every flat surface in the ruin...
It took a month of poring over the results to find them. A couple dozen ancient runes, so worn away by the sands of time that even the charcoal barely picked them up. It took even longer to translate them, and for months afterwords Dominique barely left her quarters. Finally, after nearly an entire school year, she made a breakthrough.
"But, I feel that"
The inscription hadn't even amounted to a full sentence- but upon reciting it, everything would change. If a mere four words could grant her this much power, what would knowing the full language bring her? Now in her last year of school, Dominique's resolve has only strengthened...
_______IN-DEPTH STUFF
Physical Description:
Marissa Wagner is a short, plump woman with an uncanny resemblance to a tropical bird. Her curly hair is neon violet in color, and her nose is long and beaky. She typically wears very colorful dresses that tend to look a bit gaudy.
Personality:
Marissa is a duplicitous vulture of a woman, always on the lookout for her next big scoop. "Razor-sharp" doesn't even begin to describe her wit- if one were to somehow forge a blade from it, the resulting weapon would be sought after by warriors the world over. While she's amiamble enough in her private life, it's not hard to figure out that the persona she puts on in her writing is who Marissa wants to be.
Marissa is the owner and editor in chief of The Maestoso Manifesto, a gossip rag based out of Tirial. While it's primary focus is on drama and scandals, it will occasionally publishes insightful news articles and op-eds written by guest authors. While her main readerbase is in Serendipity, imported copies of The Manifesto also sell surprisingly well in Adela for some reason...
Relationships:
Marissa has friends throughout Tirial, as well as connections to influential people across Serendipity.
Magic/Abilities:
Marissa is a talented writer and shrewd businesswoman, having sucessfully started up her own weekly newsletter from virtually nothing.
Marissa owns a Dupliquill! If she underlines writing with it, she can instantly copy it onto another sheet of paper by tapping it with the feathered end.
History:
There isn't much to say about Marissa's early years- though it should be noted that her grandparents were lower nobles who were disgraced after having a money-laundering scheme exposed.
The initial idea for her newsletter came from- of all things- a handwritten menu of a local restaurant. It was difficult getting Tirians to accept a source of gossip that wasn't verbal- Marissa intially had to do public readings of The Manifesto and have an associate sell the paper to those who wanted to read along- but she eventually carved enough of a niche for herself that people were willing to accept it. While still not as popular as the more traditional means of spreading gossip, The Manifesto has earned enough money for Marissa to live comfortably...
Viden's Barony, One Year Ago...
"Give it back! It's not yours!"
Susie Rainfeather dashed down the jade-paved pathway, fists clenched tightly. Just ahead of her were a pair of girls her age, both of whom were laughing. "It is now!" one of them jeered. "It's winners-keepers, Rainfeather!"
"Yeah!" the other chimed in. "Don't play keep-away with us if you're not prepared to lose!"
"Y-you didn't say we were playing for keepsies!" Susie protested as she struggled to keep up. "You just said we were gonna play hackysack!"
The girls only laughed harder at this, to Susie's dismay. Then her eyes widened as she saw one of them suddenly split off the main pathway, running towards...
"The river? No, wait! Wait!"
But it was too late. The girl had thrown the hackysack into the water, where it slowly sank to the bottom. Susie immediately jumped in after it, not even stopping to take off her socks and shoes. "She went in!" one of the girls shrieked gleefully. "She actually went in!"
"Rainfeather, more like Frog-feather!" the other laughed. "Frog-feather, Frog-feather~!"
Susie poked her head above the water, hackysack in hand. The water thankfully hadn't been too deep, and the current wasn't quite strong enough to carry the toy away. She watched quietly as the two bullies left, giggling as they headed back towards the road. With a sniffle, the girl waded out of the water. She may have been crying, but since she was already soaked it was hard to tell. "It's not fair..." she murmured as she began to wring out her hair. "They always do this..."
"Then why didn't you stop them?"
Susie froze. It wasn't a voice she recognized, and the thought of a stranger having seen what just happened made her anxiety flare up. Slowly she turned around to see who had spoken, stammering in embarressment. "W-what? Do I...?"
A pale young woman was leaning against a tree near the riverbank, gazing at Susie with peircing yellow eyes. Her robes were a deep shade of azure, with a moving pattern that seemed to ebb and flow like water in a creek. Her hair was stark white, as if it'd been robbed of all color. An odd feeling of dread overcame the Susie, and she instinctively took a step back. "You..." she whispered, breathing sharply. "Are you from that family?"
The woman ignored her. "Well? Why didn't you stop them?" she repeated, tilting her head to the side. "You could have, if you wanted to."
Susie blinked, then looked at her feet. "...I don't mean to disappoint you Miss, but..." she said as she gripped her arm, shifting her weight. "I... I couldn't. That's why."
The stranger hummed softly. "Ahhh. I see, I see." She straightened up, taking a few steps towards the younger girl. "So, you don't how yet?"
Susie hesitated, then took another step back. She wanted to run away, but something kept the girl rooted in place. Curiosity? She began to fidget with the hackysack in her hand nervously. "Um... h-how to what?"
The woman smiled, looking rather like a cat who'd just discovered a mousehole to sit in front of. "How to." she said simply. She walked towards the girl, stopping just in front of her. She offered the girl her hand, a hungry gleam in her eyes. "Come on, let me show you!"
Susie looked at the strange woman, uncertainty glazed over her face. Her clothes were still drippng wet, and the water in her shoes were beginning to make her socks itch. The girl had always been pushed around by the other kids her age, and it'd always seemed like it'd remain that way forever. Was it really something that she had the power to change? She touched the empty pendant she wore around her neck. Was it something she was allowed to change?
Quivering, Susie reached for the woman's hand...
Signing Emo
_______IN-DEPTH STUFF
Physical Description:
Job Greenhill is an older gentleman with greying hair and a bushy mustache. His eyes are sea green, and he usually has a slimy grin on his face. Job generally wears a blue suit with a brown tweed jacket.
Personality:
Job Greenhill has no shame whatsoever. He will do anything legally in his power to climb up the ladder- brown-nosing, bribery, manipulation, it's all fair game to him. He has no interest in securing a position on the Land Owners Council, however- he much prefers to work in the relative shadows of being a lawyer. To him, social progression is less about holding power than it is about making those who are in power reliant on him. The more powerful Job's clients are, the more money and influence he gets- it's as straightforward as that.
For a man of such dubious morality, Job vaguely seems to care about those less fortunate than him. He donates quite a lot of money to various charities and non-profit groups, though this could also be for more pragmatic reasons like tax write-offs.
Relationships:
Job has an adopted son named Willem, a street urchin the man took a liking to. Job genuinely cares for Willem, and affectionately calls him "Pim".
Job's ex-wife Charlotte left him after discovering her husband had been cheating on her. It's been nearly twenty-five years since then, and to this day Job has not remarried.
Magic/Abilities:
Job is an accomplished lawyer, and has memorized Jadenshine's legal code (and all of it's loopholes)
History:
Not much can be said about Job's formative years, as they were fairly standard. He attended a law school in Giada when he was old enough, got married, then divorced, and now he's here.
Job met Willam three years ago after catching the boy attempt to pick his pocket- twice. Witnessing the urchin's shameless tenacity felt like looking in a mirror, and the lawyer felt inspired- obligated, even- to take the boy under his wing.
"This is going to be so cool!"
Hoss trekked through the forest, a smile on her face. Tales of an horrendous beast had sprung up in the surrounding villages- a beast the locals dubbed "Featherjaw". Said beast was becoming a menace- and therefore, in Hoss's mind, it had to be evil. And if it was evil... Then it was Hoss's job to kill it.
"Oh Kia, this will be epic!" the teenager thought excitedly. "First, I'm gonna rush it with my axe and slice it's legs of! Then I'll shoot it a bunch of times, and then I'll cut it in half!"
Suddenly, Hoss heard it- an unearthly howl in the distance. It had to be the beast. Exhilarated, Hoss ran in the direction the noise came from...
...Only to stumble into a clearing and find the beast already dead. The corpse was massive, at least fifteen feet tall. Fresh wounds from some sort of weapon covered it's body- Featherjaw hadn't gone down without a fight.
Hoss narrowed her eyes, pouting. Slowly she began to circle the monster's body, until she finally spotted another person standing nearby. Did they slay this beast?
"Hey! What gives?" Hoss yelled angrily, storming towards the figure. "That was supposed to be my kill!"
Character Theme:
Fantastic Pace
__________IN-DEPTH STUFF
Physical Description:
Darryn Zendarium is a sallow-faced man with a slight build. His eyes are a striking shade of red. He wears his jet-black hair in an unfortunate-looking mushroom cut- he thinks it looks good on him.
Darryn's green suit is his most treasured possession. It wasn't particularly expensive, but it's by far the most presentable outfit he owns. If you get it dirty, Darryn will probably yell at you.
Personality:
Darryn is narcissistic and entitled. He has a nasty persecution complex, and tends to blame anything that goes wrong in his life on other people. He believes society has unjustly cast him aside, and he works tirelessly to prove himself to the world.
Despite his cynicism, Darryn is actually very naive. It's incredibly easy to take advantage of the man- all you need to do is tell him what he wants to hear.
Relationships:
Darryn's family moved out of Jadenshine a few years ago, leaving him in charge of the family home- an ancient, decrepit building that's slowly falling apart due to neglect. Darryn has done the bare minimum to keep it standing, and calling it a "death trap" would be an understatement.
Magic/Abilities:
Darryn has a plethora of knowledge regarding the arts- painting, poetry, theatre, etc. He's completely devoid of talant, however, and the best artwork he's ever produced barely passes as "mediocre".
Darryn is surprisingly strong for a scrawny guy who doesn't excercise a whole lot...
History:
Darryn is a below-average man with above-average aspirations. First he wanted to be a mage, but his application to Kia's Garden was rejected due to a lack of talent. Then he tried the arts, but his mediocre paintings weren't good enough to be displayed in galleries, and his abysmal poetry was scorned by everybody he showed it to. He constantly blamed others for these failures, claiming they simply couldn't comprehend a lofty genius such as himself.
Adverse to hard work and with no money to fall back on when his countless ventures in the arts inevitably failed, the man struggled to make ends meet. While scrounging through his family's attic in hopes of finding something he could sell, Darryn discovered what seemed to be the biggest injustice he'd ever faced...
Surrounded by clutter and covered in dust were centuries-old legal documents showing that his family- the Zendariums- used to be the ruling family of Jadenshine.
Needless to say, Darryn was livid. The "misfortune" he'd faced in life suddenly made sense- it was all a plot to keep him from rising to power! It had to be the Silinrul's fault, they wanted to deny him his divine right to rule! In his self-rightious fury, the man came to a decision- he was going to get into politics and overthrow the Silinruls, taking back his rightful place on the throne.
Yeah. Let's see how that works out for him.
