Winters-Feather

The moon hung lazily in the night sky, hidden behind  a thin veil of clouds from the afternoon's rain. The ocean's waves  were restless and kept crashing against the water's surface, though hardly rose that high. Keeth expertly jumped through one, enjoying the rush She wished it would storm. It was a lot more fun to jump through waves when it stormed. Plus, ships were more likely to sink, and the mermaid always enjoyed an easy snack.

Speaking of a snack...
She hadn't had any meat for a few weeks now. No meat made the mermaid grouchy. Hell, thinking about it really killed her mood. Keeth stopped playing with the waves, already bored, and instead swam on her back, her hair glowing lightly in the moonlight.  She wasn't even really supposed to be all the way out.. wherever she was at this hour. Her parents always wanted her home, or at least in a pod. But Keeth loved the night, and she wanted to be alone.
Some good that's doing me, she thought with a low moan. I'm so bored.
Her eyes blinked dully at the sky.  So many stars, turning in slow circles.
Why don't they do anything different? Keeth wondered.

A flickering light in the corner of her eye caught her attention. Keeth jolted at first, concerned it was her parents or someone she knew- she didn't want to be bothered by them now, that was for certain. But it wasn't. It was bobbing on the surface of the water, awkwardly, swaying. Keeth could hear voices, too, and she smiled.
Ship, she eagerly thought.

With a whoop she dove into the water and shot towards the ship until she was by the starboard side, her fingertips pressed against the wood. Keeth shook her hair out, careful to keep her light dim as she carefully watched the sailors. They were a mix of pale and dark skinned humans and some with funny looking fins growing outside of their heads. Horns, they were called. They sang and danced to weird, unnatural rhythms to the mermaid's ears. Two were engaged in a mock fight. Keeth watched in fascination, as one might to a lunatic raving. This was the best entertainment all day! A hungry light gleamed in her eye. She was growing hungry fast, and this looked like a fun challenge...
