Valia Coleridge was quite the trouble maker, though the Grand Duke would deal with her antics as civily as possible to save face for his wife. Everyone, unfortunately, knew she had a reputation, and the way she was acting today, within the first hour of the ball, no less, only proved that.

The only place to take her, was the quietest and safest.. and that was the Grand Duchess's room. Gesturing to Oscar Treyburn to follow, he lead the way.

With ornate, mahogany carved walls, and bed posts sculpted into serene, decadent ornaments, the servants were there fast, lighting up a few of the lamps to give the room an extra glow. Though a chandelier was already glistening, it never hurt to have the place as bright as possible.

Gesturing towards the fainting chair, he directed Oscar and Valia to have a seat. Valia, who was only partially sober by this point, found herself frozen in fear. The air felt different, and she had no idea this would have happened here. She hadn't meant to make a scene but.. well..
It had happened, and she was terribly crushed she had made herself a mockery. Drinks could fix everything right?

Well, today that proved to be a farce, and she wanted nothing more than to curl up and hide away for the rest of the evening. Maybe, the rest of her life. But pride and her status dictated she try to save her own face. So she attempted to keep her crumpling pride.

"I.. thank you for your help.." she stated softly, casting her pink eyes towards her dirty skirts. She felt her face turning about as hot pink as her face, which matched her eyes and the rest of her.
"But... could you please all leave me alone I... would like to recover in quiet. I am not well."

The Grand Duke frowned at this, but left the decision up to his wife. After all, he felt she would have more command here.

Kathryn had said nothing.  She knew she should say something, anything to diffuse the tension in the room, but she couldn't do that without making things hard on her sister...

"Fill the bathtub," she told the maid softly, then turned to look over the mess her sister had made.  Two messes, in point of fact...  "And find something appropriate for Lady Valia to wear to replace her dress."

Her eyes went from her sister to the young man who had rescued her.  "I am so sorry to be taking you away from the ball, Lord Treyburn.  But I do hope we can thank you by helping you to clean up your costume."  And hair.  Oh, the pair of them were quite the mess...

And then, she did something unexpected.  Kneeling down in front of her sister, she reached out and pulled her into a warm hug...liquor and food be damned.  The irony of her sister's drunken behavior was not lost on her.

The hug stunned her, and stiffly she found herself within her sister's embrace. And despite the gesture meaning something of comfort, Valia bristled and backed away from the action and gave her older sister a defiant glare.
"Careful, you might soil your dress, too."

As if the evening couldn't get any stranger, Oscar found himself directed, damsel in distress in tow, to none other than the rooms of the Duchess herself. Only etiquette kept the poor man from faltering in the doorway, but he still swallowed nervously, taking in the sumptuous decor, the waiting maids. He was used to fine things at his family home, but this went far beyond that, and the poor man felt like a bedraggled beggar as he helped Lady Valia to sit, though he remained stiffly standing until the Duke directed him to do the same. He sat gingerly, and at a respectable distance, not daring to get comfortable in such strange surroundings. He felt like an intruder - or worse, a conspirator in this disaster - and the Duchess's pleasantries only did a little to change that.

He inclined his head, the closest he could get to a bow while sitting down. "No one is at fault, your Grace," He said, his voice quiet as though he might disturb the tension in the room. "I'm glad I was able to help in some fashion..." His eyes flickered to his ruined costume, and the even bigger mess that was poor Lady Valia, and couldn't help but wince. "Even if the result leaves something to be desired."

Ivory

"Nonsense.  We'll get you into the bathtub, and you'll feel right as rain."  If she was phased, at all, by her sister's temper tantrum, the Grand Duchess didn't seem to show it.  The maids arrived, then, with a variety of gowns to choose from, and Kathryn selected the pinkest she could find before sending the others back.  She did know her sister well, after all!

With the maids escorting her sister towards the bathroom, she said to Oscar, "I've asked the staff to fill the second bathtub for you as well.  The staff will be on hand to see to your needs."  And to make sure nothing untoward happened to Lady Valia!  The sound of a curtain being drawn somewhere seemed to confirm that nothing improper would happen.

"I do hope you'll pardon the circumstances, and the poor offering.  After you and your clothes are in better condition, please, why don't you join us downstairs for a drink?  I've heard a great deal about your family."  She laughed softly, a charming, delighted laugh as she added, "And if even half the rumors are true, I would love to have you at Court."

Vivi

It took a great deal of effort not to fidget like a schoolboy as he found himself alone with the Grand Duchess - or alone as one could get when surrounded by servants. Her kindness to her sister it seemed, also extended to her so-called 'rescuer' under these circumstances, and despite his discomfort he breathed a small sigh of relief. He felt disgusting in his ruined costume, the cloth stained and his hair tangled and feeling unpleasantly sticky. That he could salvage something out of that was a definite plus.

"You are very kind, Your Grace." He inclined his head again, though his invitation caused his eyes to widen before he could control himself. "I- Y-yes, yes of course. I'd be more than happy to join you - once I'm more presentable." He managed a small, actually genuine chuckle back, raising his head. "I'm afraid we're a rather colourful brood... b-but hopefully we can do what you've heard some justice."

She was inviting him? Him of all people? Oh, his mother was going to have a fit, he just knew it.

Valia glared back at her sister defiantly. She was so upset, and still drunk, but the events were at least a little sobering.
"I'll clean up, but I make no promises to return to the ball." And without another word, she let the maids escort her to the bath. And while she bathed she simmered over all of the events of the night. It had barely been a few hours into the party and she made a mockery of herself- and after a time, even after she had her hair lovely and brushed and a dress- pink and even more beautiful and slimming, than her other one, she found herself sitting before the vanity and suddenly beginning to cry.

"If you don't want to come back, I'll understand," Kathryn answered her sister soothingly.  "You can stay here, if you like.  The maids will get you anything you need."

Except more alcohol, she hoped.

Turning her attention back to Oscar, she gave him a pretty curtsy.  "Thank you, again.  I look forward to learning more about you and your family."  So saying, she linked arms with her husband again, and the pair strode from the room.

"I-" Oscar didn't really have the time or wherewithal to respond to the Duchess properly, instead dropping into a low bow as she swept away. Once she had left he finally allowed himself a sigh of relief, stepping to the offered bath with several nervous glances towards Lady Valia's bathing room. The sounds coming from inside that room were... distressing at best.

Her presence nearby meant that he stripped and washed as quickly as humanly possible - though the strawberries in his hair took some fighting. The clothes they had offered him to replace his ruined costume were largely similar to what he'd had before, albeit somewhat finer. Absently he wondered how much effort it had taken to find something so similar, resolving to pass on his thanks as he donned the white shirt and terracotta trousers. The gold cloak he'd worn to match his mask was beyond help, and instead he took the one they'd offered instead - long and the colour of sand, with heavy tawny fur across the shoulders. Fur, he snorted, amused. To go with my lion's mane, or what there is of it.

His mask had survived with a few easily removed smears, and he picked it up as he came to the Lady's door, knocking with great hesitation. "Ah... Lady Valia? Are you well?"

[Reckon I'll finish up here and then go to the dance thread in the next couple of posts.]

Valia felt god awful, and the more she sobered, the worst she felt. Crying wasn't doing a thing for her, and eventually vanity got in the way as she peered at her blood shot eyes.
Then the knock came at the door.
And the inquiry.

Blinking, she jerked from her vanity bench and peered at the door.
"I'm just fine!"s he shouted at the door. "Feel free to return to the party..." ANd here she hesitated, about to command him of it but she couldn't recall if she ever got his name. So she closed her lips and went silent.
"There haven't been many occasions such as this. I hope you enjoy your night." THough by the tone in her voice, it didn't sound like she meant it.

Oscar bit his lip, hovering uncertainly at the door. "Madam, are you sure? If you're feeling ill, I can call someone-" But he faltered into silence, shaking his head sadly. He was concerned - and rightly so, considering how the night had gone so far - but there was little he could do from this point forward. After all, it wasn't as though he could barge into a Lady's bathroom and insist upon it. If she wished to be alone, he would have to respect it, like it or not.

"Y-yes, my lady." He inclined his head toward the closed door, though she couldn't see him. "I hope you feel better soon. Please do take care."

He sighed, and donning his mask he left the room, glancing worriedly back one final time.
