Jadenshine....

Jake couldn't remember the last time they'd been in town, but he liked playing shows here. Paved roads for his carts. Craftsmen who actually knew their trade (and were more interest in trade than highway robbery.) Yes, Jake liked it when the show stopped in Jadenshine.

"Hey freak!"

Jake ignored it. If they wanted to gawk at him, they could pay money for it later when the show was open. For now, he had work to do. He dissolved the illusion of the ponies that were pulling the cart he rode. Stabilizing the carts with poles and twine, he climbed the ropes to put up the tent. Jake loved working in the air the best; in the air his freakish feet didn't matter and he was free to do what he did best: bring the magic alive with his hands.

Yellow eyes stared at the scene before them, a gleam of wicked fun shining in their lemon-colored depths. Hazel sat behind a bush nearby, watching the man work on his task. While paying absolutely no attention to the fairy with green butterfly wings and long purple hair who had a mischievous scheme in mind at that moment.

Going invisible with a wave of her hand, Hazel crept forward, quick and quiet to where the lad was putting up a tent for some show he was about to do. Oh, this was going to be so much fun! she inwardly squealed to herself. Going over to the twine, Hazel attempted to undo it while glancing up at the man with weird feet in the air. However she failed to unravel the twine, for it was done up pretty good. After a minute of futile attempts, Hazel gave up with Plan B in mind.

In one fell swoop she created a grand illusion, making the ground and cart underneath him seemingly disappear, now instead with raging waters beneath him and where the cart once stood, was a boat pulled by sharks which promptly started to move the boat. Meanwhile, the ropes that the man was climbing were promptly turned into illusory writhing snakes! The people and streets of Serendipity no longer in sight (for him at least), Hazel sat down by the bush again to watch the results of her marvelous handiwork unfold.

Jake pulled a lute out of his pocket (had it been there before?) and played a tune to charm the snakes as they lowered him into the boat.

Then looking past the illusion, he propped himself up in the cart below the tent and called out "Just a preview of what's to come folks! 2 pennies each! Show starts at 8!"

He looked around for the source of the little "preview" but didn't see anyone.

Ethereal-Star

Hazel frowned. That wasn't the reaction she was expecting at all. Disappointed, she remained hidden watching the guy as he called out about how this was just a preview of what was to come. Apparently, he also possessed glamour magics which for a human was highly unusual. He had to have a lot more fey blood in him than most of the Serenians roundabouts here. It was the only thing that made sense. She examined him some more, paying more careful attention to his features noticing they did seem more fey-like than most of those in Serendipity. While fey-like in appearance, he was still human though.

The fairy watched as he looked around in confusion, obviously looking for her no doubt. She grinned wickedly, as another idea began to take form in her mind.

((Let me know if this is okay or if I need to change some of it regarding Jake's appearance.))

R.R. Pebble

((works for me))

Jake considered going back onto the ropes to continue working on the tent. But if his "friend" was still around, he didn't really want to find out what she had in mind next while up in the air.

So he pushed himself over to the edge of the platform and set to work on the pulley system that worked most of the stage "magic" during the show. If the troublemaker was still around, he was sure she'd make another appearance sooner or later. Better to be on solid ground when it happened this time.

Ethereal-Star

Hazel waited until Jake was occupied with something else before she crept over to the tent, while still invisible with glamour magics, and undid the little amount of work he had done to put it up in the air. The tent fell down to the ground, and she quickly picked it up and moved it a ways away from the fey-looking human, about 5 feet away. If Jake were to look over right at this moment he would see a tent moving along in the air by itself.

Hazel moved back behind the bush again and made the tent do a little dance number of its own, before collapsing back to the ground, lifeless. The fairy giggled gleefully, taking care to not make too much noise.

R.R. Pebble

Jake missed the dancing tent, as he was intent on his work with the pulleys. He did hear it fall to the ground, and thought he might have heard laughter from the bushes behind him.

Pulleys in place, he replaced the tent and grabbed a mule and hopped into the cart closest to the bushes to look for his "friend."

"Admission 2 pennies each. Show starts at 8." he said pointedly toward the area where he was quite sure she must be. He looked hard for bent branches or other traces that would let him see through the glamour that hid her.

Ethereal-Star

Hazel moved away from the bush quietly, careful not to make a peep. She knew that the young human was trying to break the illusion and find her. That wouldn't do at all. Her fun was only just starting.

Once again she unraveled the tent, letting it plop back to the ground and then dashing over to a boulder opposite the bush.

R.R. Pebble

Jake saw the bushes rustle just as the tent came down again.

He ignored the tent, watching the cover carefully for signs of the troublemaker. He saw some dust kicked up as she made her escape and lack of movement in the bushes told him she wasn't back there.

Gliding over to the pulleys with his cart, he extended the stage platform out farther than the wood planks could reach, blocking the path. Climbing onto the magically extended platform, he began working on the (non-illusory) scenery behind him.

Only someone who could see through his illusions would be able to walk down the path to make trouble, he thought, anyone else would have to go around. Either way, he'd be sure to spot them, he thought.

Ethereal-Star

Hazel stayed where she was. Flicking a wrist, she dissolved the extended platform. Really, this were too easy. she thought with glee. Another flick of the wrist saw the showman's wheels on the cart turn into square blocks. For the moment anyway since he could obviously break her illusions just as easily as she could break his. Staying quiet as a mouse, Hazel watched the proceedings in anticipatory joy.

R.R. Pebble

Jake easily scaled the scenery as the stage extension disappeared below him. He noticed the cart wheels, but, since he didn't need them to be round at the moment, left well enough alone. He tried another track:

"Magic! Travel! A bed every night and money in your pocket!" he called. "Do you have what it takes to join our show?"

He, himself, had been recruited by a similar call so many years earlier. He wondered now how it might sound to another wayward waif.

Ethereal-Star

Hazel did not take the bait. She was having much too much fun doing her own thing, on her own accord. A fairy of mischief didn't join circuses, that kind of thing was for mortals who liked to work together on entertaining other people. Hazel only wanted to entertain herself.

So it was with these thoughts the fairy flitted over, invisible and silent still, quickly picked up the tent and draped it over the silly showman's head before flying away behind the boulder again, giggling as she went but making sure to throw her voice and rustle the bushes with her glamour magic so it looked like she were over there instead.

R.R. Pebble

Jake was sure he'd caught sight of his mischief-making friend just before the tent came down over him. It was small work to understand that the tent was back where it belonged.
But instead of retaliating, Jake hung motionless on the set-piece. He was quite sure of what he'd seen. At least as sure as one can be of anything when glamour was involved. Had he really gone up against a full-blooded fairy in a battle of glamours? This could not end well.

Ethereal-Star

With the tent still covering the show-man and making him look rather silly according to Hazel's eyes, the fairy couldn't help but let out a childish giggle at the sight before quickly covering her mouth with a dark-colored hand. Looking back at Tent Man, she saw he still hadn't moved. It was like perhaps he'd gotten a glimpse of her after all.

Well, boo on that. Hazel frowned. And she had been so careful too! So, the butterfly fairy sat still behind the boulder waiting to see what the showman would do now. She could only hope her invisibility still held up. After all, it would be a shame to stop the fun now. Hazel still had several tricks up her sleeve that she wanted to carry out, but it wouldn't be possible now if he knew where she was and could see her.

With a quick decision, Hazel waved a hand and created an illusion of a horse-drawn carriage arriving complete with clomping horse hooves, and a strong, steady male voice calling out, "There he is! There's the cripple!" Hopefully THAT would draw his attention away from her.

Wise was very surprised by the two glamour magic users having a little war. He had seen enough and decided to step in. "Hello there. I hope that fairy isn't bothering you too much I hope," Wise said to the man. "My name is Wise and I am the Lore Master who owns the world's biggest library", Wise spoke. He looked at where the fairy was hidden and yelled "Come out here and apologize to this poor man this instant!". Hopefully she would come out of hiding...

Ethereal-Star

((OOC: Unless your character Wise can break through Hazel's glamour powers, he wouldn't be able to see her, much less know of the conflict between the two. Remember, glamour is an immortal force in the world of SotE. Looking at your character's profile, I see it says he is a type of immortal human but it doesn't explain much more than that. Could you elaborate please? And speaking of which, Hazel had just created an illusion of a horse-drawn carriage to distract Jake with. If Wise somehow saw through that as well, I would like to know that too. Just trying to understand here.))

R.R. Pebble

Jake ignored the comments from the carriage-driver. He'd heard far worse in his time - especially in the days before Kinse had taken him in. It was unclear if he'd noticed the carriage was just another of Hazel's glamours. "Show starts at 8! 2 pennies each!" he said automatically.

((OOC: I'll edit this part once we get clarification about Wise's ability to see through glamour.)

The newcomer was really more of an annoyance than anything else. Jake was long accustomed to well-meaning strangers coming to his defense. He didn't like it, but he'd found it an inevitable part of life - sort of like the jeers. He didn't say anything to the man. In fact, he completely ignored him, continuing to paint the set piece he was hanging on with a paintbrush that he pulled out of... where exactly?

This was why he liked working with the show. It gave structure and meaning to the abuse and "help" he'd been given for so long.

firefiend33

((OOC: Yes, Wise has this ability, although I should add it. I haven't explained Wise's back story, but I plan to release it soon.))

With no response from the man, Wise thought best to help him. He looked for extra paint brushes, but he couldn't find any. Wise began to speak again, hoping not to be ignored. "Do you have any spare paints brushes that I can borrow sir?", Wise said kindly. Wise might be old, but his immortality gives him the energy he needs.

Ethereal-Star

((OOC: OK, thanks for the answer, that helps!))

With Hazel's glamours now effectively dispelled, the fairy now in view but still partially hidden behind the boulder, she decided to leave as her fun was now officially ruined. Hazel did not come out to apologize, as that would be absurd. Her, apologize? For what? Can't a fairy just have some fun and games whenever she wants? Apparently this was not so and as a result, she saw no reason to stick around anymore, huffing in disappointment.

Fluttering her green butterfly wings, Hazel took to the air and flew off. Perhaps she would be back if there were any more opportunities for mischief to be had. For now though, the bored fairy decided to try her luck elsewhere for the time being.

((Hazel as said might be back, given the right circumstances.))

R.R. Pebble

((OOC: If Wise can see through the glamours, then he can see that Jake isn't actually painting with anything... it's all glamour. Which makes his comment make less sense? I think? LMK if you want to reword))
