Physical Description

Segari is a tall, muscular man, much akin to a tree in both size and girth. Although he is not necessarily old for his people, he is certainly weathered from both lifestyle and life circumstances. He has a ruddy complexion, slightly pointed ears, a large hooked nose, and blue-grey eyes. His hair and beard are both thick and a bright red-orange in color with a mild amount of silvering. The sides of his head are completely shaved while the top and back of his hair are kept in a series of braids that are all kept together in a “ponytail” of sorts by a series of leather bands. It traditionally reaches to about midback for him. His beard in turn is much longer, reaching almost to his waist and is kept in a multitude of thick braids with carved wooden beads woven into it. He is very particular about the care of his hair and beard and does not take to people touching it lightly. The only exception though would be children who he patiently allow to tug on it if he is holding them and it brings them comfort.

While he has no piercings, Segari does sport several blue tattoos. His forehead, cheeks, temples, and the sides of his skull where the hair is shaved away all have symmetrical patterns of lines of varying thicknesses. He also has several bands around his upper arms as well as old, faded runes across his knuckles.

His clothes tend to be a mix of cloths, furs, and leather belts. Some of his vests and jackets all have delicate silvery embroidery on them but also appear to be the most well-worn. He takes great care with tending and washing them. Any damage done to them is also taken to the nearest seamstress or tailor where he anxiously awaits for its repair. Segari’s color choices also tend to be dark teals and rich maroons when he has the opportunity to buy new things. His only jewellry is a thick silver band with etched runes on his left ring finger. He also carries a double-edged battleaxe with him wherever he goes that once belonged to his father.

Personality

Segari is a rather gruff man and not very articulate, leading to his nickname of "Errum" for the sounds of nervous hesitation he often makes when forced to communicate. He tends to like to keep to the background of things and only voice his opinion when he deems it absolutely necessary, which is extremely rare. When he does speak, he chooses his words with care. They may be jumbled and not come out quite right but the intention and meaning he is trying to coney is there and traditionally well thought out.

While older and wiser than most humans he encounters,  he tends to let the "young pups" figure things out on their own instead of interfering. Their squabbles do not concern him unless he manages to get dragged into them.

That being said, Segari is the type of man that cannot walk away from someone in need of help. It doesn’t matter how large or small the task is or who or what you are, he will stop to assist. A great deal of the odd jobs he gets in his travels are a result of this. He has done everything from defend villages to finding lost children to couriering merchandise from remote locations to bigger settlements for trade.

He is protective, earnest, and surprisingly bashful. While not a generally violent man, Segari can’t stand injustice or harm done upon others, especially to the young. Children are the only exception to his apparent gruff shyness though as they hold a soft spot in his heart. He doesn’t have to ever think twice when it comes to helping a child in need. Segari will go completely out of his way just to stop and make sure a little one is alright or to see them smile.

Things

  • Can’t read or write. Runa tried to teach him but he would get the letters and words all mixed up.
  • Also really bad at idioms. He tends to jumble different ones together or switch around the words of the ones he does know.
  • Enjoyed listening to his wife’s storytelling and reading to his sons probably as much as if not more than they did.
  • Can’t sew to save his life, but is really good at knitting and knotwork.
  • Smokes a pipe but only ever outdoors.
  • Absolutely HATES onions. Can't stand the smell of them and can't stand the taste of them.

Magic/Abilities

Brandr and Egil: Segari’s two sons with Runa. They were his pride and joy. Unfortunately, they were killed by bandits who broke into Segari’s home while he was away in town. He feels an incredible amount of deep-seated guilt over their loss that he has yet to forgive himself for. DECEASED

History

Segari doesn’t discuss his past with anyone. But, those few that know a tidbit or two might know that he hails from the Kilanthro Mountains or somewhere thereabouts. It is unknown if that is also his birthplace or just where he settled at some point. He married and had a wife and two sons all of whom he loved more than there are stars in the sky.

The family of four lived a simple life on the mountain and were rather self sufficient. Segari was a woodcutter and would often go down the mountain to trade with a nearby settlement and return with trinkets and treats for his loves. Life was good for them, although the winters could be particularly difficult when the snows came and they were all trapped indoors for months at a time.

One winter proved to be particularly difficult. The mountain pass Segari often traversed to town was completely blocked in by an avalanche, leaving the family of four unable to travel down it. Normally this would not have mattered but fate was unkind to the Ggorf family. Runa became ill with a nasty, wet cough. Her breathing was labored and she often spoke of a chill despite Segari’s best efforts to keep her warm by the fire and bundled in furs. Pneumonia claimed her that year and she was buried behind their house the following spring.

Segari’s tether to life though to remain cheerful and push forward were his two remaining loves, his boys. He threw himself into fatherhood and providing their every need now that their mother was gone. The boys grew up happy and loved though there was always a bit of sadness that lingered from time to time about the three. The father of two could do his best to keep it at bay but there is only so much one man can do. Some nights were quiet and melancholy where the three slept cuddled together in bed telling stories of Runa and trying to keep the heartache t bay. Segari often did not sleep those nights.

Life continued on and it seemed that they would mend and all would be well. Segari returned to making his trips down the mountain now that his boys were growing and could be trusted on their own. Years passed and life followed a new routine. Again though fate decided to toss a hammer into the wheel of life. Segari returned home from one of his trips to find his house dark, the door torn from its hinges, and everything silent.

Never before had Segari ever felt so much fear and dread as he did then. He had stormed into his own home to find it in complete disarray. Furniture was upturned, the contents of his home were shattered and strewn about, and then there was the blood. A whole trail of it ran from the living space off down the hall where the bedrooms were. It was there that he found the bodies of his sons though they were hardly recognisable with the amount of gore upon their bodies and the dishevelment of their clothes.

It was a sight that shattered Segari and brought him to his knees. While he was able to bury his sons and make his peace with their loss, he’s never really recovered from their loss. He never did find who the bandits that had destroyed his life were either. But, after months of lingering and being haunted by memories long gone he decided to move on. Segari has since devoted his life to helping others in the way he was unable to help his own family. It doesn’t change anything and it certainly doesn’t make the guilt go away but he can at least console himself with the knowledge that someone else might not have to suffer what he has gone through because he was around to stop it.
