Riley had to resist the urge to hide when his aunt Janette approached.
"Oh no..." he muttered. If he wanted Edward to like his family, Janette was not who he wanted to show up! He fidgeted, trying to decide what to do, and whether or not he should tell Edward to run. He didn't get the chance, though, before Janette had grabbed his hand. Oh boy, she was drunk, too. Janette was bad enough sober! Riley's unfiltered response was to recoil, but he didn't snatch his hand away from his aunt.
Before he could panic, though, he spotted Trevian on the other side o the ballroom. Thank goodness. Riley shot Edward a look that said 'Oh brother!' before turning very politely to his aunt.
"You don't want to dance with me, Janette, I'm far too short!" he told her brightly. "And more importantly, there was a very handsome - and much taller - gentleman looking for someone just like you! I'll take you to him."
So Riley tugged gently on Janette's hand, leading her away from Edward and across the ballroom. "I'll be back soon... I hope," he said quietly to Edward before taking off.
He at least had the good sense not to walk directly to Trevian, in case Janette somehow caught onto their direction. Instead, he took the long way around the ballroom, coming up on Trevian from behind. Clearing his throat, he tapped Trevian on the back.
"Here, look what I found."
