Tanhuang / Re: Weal or Woe? (Open!)

The masked spirit watched as their newfound client's gaze started to stray past their shoulder, only to occupy itself with the receipt so conveniently placed in front of him. A smart one, truly; though the trickster spirit had no ill-will towards those curious of their craft, they did know a handful of spirits more powerful that spun the webs of fate who were... not so generous with their ways.

"Bone reading takes time, my dear, and not just from burning the bone itself. Many diviners would prefer quantity over the quality of their readings, which can lead to them cutting some of the lengthier options for their services," Min-Su begins, taking back their brush and inkwell and setting those aside after corking the latter, "Not to cast shade on my colleagues, of course; their services are perfectly adequate for what you pay for. I simply have much more time on my hands than most, and so the time it takes to perform bone readings is of no object to me."

The soothsayer then turns their attention to the fire as a loud crack and pop resounds from the fireplace. Speaking of that bone, it seems like it was ready. Min-Su gets up from their chair and crouches in front of the fire. They mutter something in a strange, unknown tongue as they reach into the flames with naught but their gloved hand, the flames parting around their glove as they simply pluck the smoking, charred and cracked bone from its infernal resting place.

"I think we're just about ready to start your reading," the spirit starts, returning to their seat and setting the still-hot scapula on their table, "I make no guarantees of either weal or woe in your future. With that in mind, are you ready to begin?"

The masked spirit lets out a small chuckle as the man sips on his tea. They reach back for the shoulder bone they had brought out and set it in the now roiling fire. There come a few cracks and pops as the heat causes it to slowly crack and splinter, but the kumiho was not going to pull it out so soon. Their best predictions came from the bones that burned longest.

"Very well. It will be a few minutes before that bone is ready to be read," they say as they turn to again take their seat. They pour themself another cup of tea and lift their mask slightly to sip on it, before setting it back down to continue. "Now, a standard bone reading costs fifteen marks. I'm sure you understand; I have to replace my stock of bones rather frequently, as bone readings are... one of my more popular services."

The spirit then pulls out a small pad of paper, an inkwell and a brush. Taking the brush in hand, they quickly write a few lines of symbols; a flowing, brisk but clearly legible calligraphy soon covers the small page, which they gently tug free of the pad, sliding it towards Li with a smile under their mask. "Your bill, when you're ready to pay."

Although the spirit's face was concealed behind their vulpine mask, Min-Su remained smiling warmly as they poured a fresh cup of tea for their new guest and potential customer. Their unseen eyes gazed over the man in front of them; average height and young, but he seemed rather well-off, if his clothes were anything to go by. They push the cup of tea over to the young man, motioning for him to take a seat.

"I offer a variety of services, really. Matchmaking... divination... communion with spirits..." the kumiho starts, their ambiguous voice sounding not one bit muffled under their wooden face covering. They reach under their table and pull out a lamb's scapula, picked clean of flesh. Although they could certainly use tea leaves, or read his palm, bone-reading was the soothesayer's preferred method for divination.

"You don't strike me as the courting sort, and certainly not the type to bargain with spirits, so I'm assuming your here to hear your fortune told," they continue, placing the bone on the tabletop as they get up to stoke the fire at the back of the room, "am I correct?"

Tanhuang / Weal or Woe? (Open!)

The musty, citrusy smoke from frankincense sticks wafts through the small room in which Min-Su sat, their gloved fingers tapping idly on the table in front of them as the spirit watched the door. They were expecting someone later that day for an extended match-making session, but as that was not until later in the afternoon, they were taking walk-in customers for regular fortunes that morning. As it were, business on that front was rather slow; the kumiho was on their second pot of tea, and they only had a couple of their regulars appear. Money was no object to the spirit considering their near total lack of mortal needs, but the lack of clients was proving... rather boring. The masked being's urges to commit small acts of mischief in the streets of Tanhuang were rising, but, thankfully, it seemed that wouldn't be necessary.

The bone chime at the door clatters and rattles as it opens.

"Good morning, my dear. What would you seek from Min-Su today?" the kumiho asks from under their fox-face mask with an unseen smile, reaching over for their teapot and a second cup.

Occupation: Soothsayer/Matchmaker

Physical Description

True Form
Like all other kumiho and kitsune, Min-Su in their true form resembles a large, lithe fox with long, wide ears that stands 3'6" at the shoulders, carrying a glass orb in their mouth. The fox spirit's entire body is colored with dark umber fur, with their cheeks, throat and belly a creamy white, and their paws on each leg a brownish-black. Their twelve tails mostly match their back, and are tipped white, with three black stripes on each tail. Min-Su in this form has wisps of spirit fire at the tip of each tail; owing to the pecularity of their existence, six of these wisps are light blue, and the other six are teal. Like many other fox spirits, Min-Su wears a mask, leaving their features obscured; said mask is made of some strange wood from the spirit world, painted white with red markings around the eyes and on the forehead.

Disguised form
Min-Su's disguised "humanoid" form is around average height for the mortals they interact with the most, the Shijie-ren, around 5'6". Their clothing takes aspects from Sheng-Gu and Songtu regional norms, with an elegant silken robe that goes down to their feet held closed with a sash, more typical of Sheng-Gu, over which they wear a flowing, loose jacket more common in Songtu. Unlike either province, however, Min-Su wears a red headscarf to cover their head, and a modified version of their wooden mask over their face. Additionally, they also wear silken gloves to hide their hands. In this form, the fox's glass orb becomes the centerpiece of a necklace of prayer beads, half of which are teal, the other half of which are blue.

Personality
Owing to their being a kumiho, Min-Su's personality is overall mischievous and aloof. They tend to prefer their privacy in personal matters, and while otherwise warm, welcoming and friendly, will eschew intimate connections in favor of social distance, even with people they consider friends; fitting, for one who wears a mask all the time.

Due to their particular situation of being essentially two kumiho stuffed into one body, their personality can differ slightly based on whether the masculine or feminine aspect is fronting.

The masculine aspect of their personality is the more aloof, distant of the two. It tends to make Min-Su more gruff, uncaring and generally more likely to follow their own conscience and desires without regard to other people's opinions or thoughts while it is in front. While certainly far from heartless, the masculine aspect seems to be more stoic and blunt of the two, and tends to make Min-Su impatient and rash.

The feminine aspect of Min-Su's personality, by contrast, is more sociable and caring. It tends to make the kumiho more amicable, warm, and generally more conscious of other people's thoughts and feelings when they're making decisions while it is in front. This aspect makes Min-Su more given to pondering and thought, making them slow down and think about their options before taking action.

Mousefolk

Native Range
Mousefolk live in settlements that dot the Terrin and Kilanthro mountains. In Serendipity, they can also be found along the Ora river, while in Adela they can spotted in the Draconi forest. In Connlaoth, they could be found in the Sirantil valley from time to time, but with the ongoing civil war, many have fled to Serendipity or gone into hiding for fear of purges or persecution.

Physical Characteristics and Styling
Mousefolk are not a tall or muscular race; the tallest members of this race of anthropomorphic mice only come up to a mere 3'11" at most (at shortest, they are around 3'5"), and their build is more toned than bulky. In essence, their body type would be best described as having the proportions of an adult packed into the small frame of a child. They are covered almost completely in fur bar their shins and feet, forearms and hands, and tails, which are covered in fine, delicate hairs that are almost unnoticeable to the naked eye.

Murine fur color ranges from dark grey to snow white, but the most common hue to find among this race is chestnut brown. For males, their hair is typically cropped flush with their fur in the back, but allowed to grow shaggy in the top and sides; variations on this haircut allow for one side to be worn long and kept in a braid, although this is viewed as a more effeminate styling in most circles. For females, the hair is allowed to grow long, almost down the middle of the back, and is normally kept up in a bun or chignon, but braids and curls are not uncommon among more well-to-do mousefolk women in urban areas.

Clothes among mousefolk fall along the lines of trousers and knee-length tunics with a belt for men, and ankle-length dresses for women. Popular colors includes greens, light blues, and reds; darker, richer colors such as purple or black are usually not worn except during formal occasions and only on small articles like scarves or sashes. Mousefolk do not generally wear shoes or footwear of any sort, although sandals are not unheard of in rough terrain.

General Attitudes
Mousefolk live fairly short lives compared to other races. On average, most mice only live around 50 years; while they are capable of living longer, their lives are often cut short by the injustices of their neighbors, who, depending on the race in question, might treat them as the vermin they resemble. As such, long lived individuals are rarity that are often treasured. This short lifespan fills most mousefolk with a sense of urgency and a desire to achieve. Laziness and sloth are seen as dire conditions, while studious and efficient individuals are held in high esteem. Compared to other races, they might seem impatient or pushy.

Mousefolk are curious and adventurous, but also loyal and steadfast companions. They find grudges and long-standing feuds to be a waste of their already short time in this world, and find the generations-long rivalries of dwarf, elf and some human families utterly baffling. As an extension of this, mousefolk in general are more likely to show mercy and compassion to strangers, and can be quite given to generosity when they can afford it.

Individual mousefolk are often inquisitive and playful; even the most steadfast and stoic of mousefolk adventurers have a penchant for pranks, jokes, and harmless fun. Their sense of urgency gives them in life gives a mouse adventurer an undeniable determination to succeed, and an almost bottomless well of optimism. It is very hard to totally crush their spirits, as their optimism and determination just keeps pushing them onward in the face of even the staunchest of adversities.

Views on Magic
Given their laid-back attitides, mousefolk are generally accepting of the magic-users in their midst, rare though they might be. Most mousefolk magic users fall into either druids, who derive their magic use from nature itself, or from a nature deity, or warlocks who make a pact with a patron archfae for magical power in return for some sort of service; it is quite rare for mousefolk to be born with innate magical ability, and can be a good cause for celebration when any one such individual is found. Depending on where a mousefolk settlement might be (with the exception of Connlaoth) and what area of magic they focus, these magic users might be shamans, healers, or scholars.

Sexuality and Gender
Among the mousefolk, men and women work most any job they would like to; the only expectation is that they be competent, lest they be laughed out of their profession. Similarly, family roles in the home are fairly relaxed; one partner generally does do much of the heavy labor and the other more of the handicraft and cooking and there is no social stigma if those roles overlap or flip-flop. On gender identity, the mousefolk are live and let live; if someone is transgender, the only thing the mousefolk will care about is making sure they can still work. Sexuality is much the same way; they don't care who one sleeps with, so long as they're not a detriment to the community. In more conservative settlements, however, queer mousefolk often keep their sexual preferences under wraps to avoid certain social stigmas.

Society
Mousefolk society is very much tribal and family-centered; households can span several generations and it isn't uncommon for a family to have the same house or couple of houses through multiple generations. With this in mind, kinship and familial honor are core values of mousefolk society; there is a sense of duty to the family and to the tribe as a whole. To bring shame or dishonor onto one's family is a grave sin, and can lead to ostrisization and even exile from one's village.

Most mousefolk towns and settlements are largely agrarian with little industrialization; there might be a town blacksmith or two, but more advanced metalworking beyond tools and simple weapons is a rarity. With their values of kinship in mind, much of the farmland surrounding a town of mousefolk is held in common by the entire community; crops from these fields are stored communally and distributed as needed. Most families will also have a small garden of herbs and vegetables for private use and to barter with, as most settlements work on a bartering system than standardized coinage. Governments within these settlements are entirely democratic; on major issues and crises, the entire town will convene a gathering and hold debates on the best solution until a consensus among the majority is reached.

As far as religious beliefs go, there are two main aspects to bear in mind: archfae worship and ancestor worship. Most mousefolk villages will have either a shrine to a patron archfae or a shrine to deceased ancestors in the town center, depending on the town in question. The most common form of both fae and ancestor worship among mousefolk is the offering of libations to their patron archfae or familial ancestors. Other common rituals include ritual dust baths with the ashes of their ancestors around sacred times of the year, and dancing around or in rings of mushrooms during a full moon (a common argument between mousefolk elders is whether one should dance in or around the mushroom rings). As a general note: fae worship is more important among Serenian and Adelan mousefolk, while ancestor worship takes the forefront among Connlaothian mousefolk.

Essyrn / Re: I'd like to make offer... ((w/ Kingfisher!))
September 02, 2019, 04:42:21 AM
Evander's crimson eyes surveyed his guests as they started to pick away at the platters and bowls on the table. The attitudes and reactions he saw from the merchant princes ranged from Khosrawi's apparent curiousity to try something new, to looks of silent disgust like those worn on lady Laghmani and master Namjoo's faces. It seemed like the fish wraps were received as well as he had anticipated, which wasn't saying much; he figured some of the more snobbish merchants would be hard to please.

To master Khosrawi's compliment, the feathered merchant merely nodded, as he busy studying the room; as much information as he could get out of his company's faces, his ears told him much more... and not all of what he was hearing was good. Dealing with two financiers, as some of Evander's guests seemed apt to foist upon him, would put him at a severe disadvantage; not ideal, but manageable. The more worrying comments to reach his ears were the ones teased the possibility of simply buying out the guild if the caravans failed... And the idea of getting bought out in this city was one that made his wings ruffle.

As the late, late afternoon turned into a proper evening with the setting sun, and his guests were mostly finished with the first round of dishes that were prepared, the gryphon motioned for his assistant. He muttered a few words in a native gryphon dialect to the young man, who disappeared for a moment as the gryphon sat up on his haunches again.

"As we move into the later hours of the evening, I feel it is now perhaps appropriate to begin more earnest business discussions," he announced, switching into a very formal register of Essyrni. As he was speaking, the assistant returned with several sheets of parchment, which were distributed among the seated merchants. The pages were blank, and within short order the gryphon's assistant came around again with some reed styli and pots of ink; at the gryphon's spot was set what looked like a folded wooden case bound by cord that, when opened, revealed slates of wax. With that, the gryphon gave the young man a nod as he settled back down onto his cushion, and off they went again.

"Now, I'm sure as you all know, my trade company deals in a variety of goods, from jewelry to weapons, and even foodstuffs. As of our most recent inventory check, we have in our stores in Adela 15 stone weight of gold jewelry of various types, 5 stone each of rubies and sapphires, 350 jars of various fruit preserves, 35 woven rugs, 10 sets of dragon armor fitted for Kaadir, and 20 rare books on topics of various aspects of alchemy," Evander started, glancing down at his wax tablets every few seconds.

"And all of this, and more, was originally bound for Essyrn before our recent misfortunes. As of recently, all of that save the Kaadir armor will be rerouted to Connlaoth or Serendipity if we cannot secure the necessary funding. By our estimation, between security, wagons and travel supplies, and miscellaneous labor, we would need around 2,500 gold dinar to cover the costs of a caravan from Adela to Essyrn."

@Klezmer Gryphon

Heyo! I don't think we've had the pleasure of writing with one another so this is the perfect opportunity to do so.

I have my half-ifrit Agnimitra who hasn't gotten any plot love herself. She could work with either, I think. I also have Dilari. We can plot out some adventures, should you like. <3

Heyo! The two characters you've listed off seem like they could be a lot of fun! I think I might could throw Leofwine at Dilari, if you would like. I would appreciate it if you could throw me a PM (or a DM on Discord if that's more your schtick), and maybe we can go from there. :>

Gonna give this a bit of a bump here!

((OoC: My apologies for the late response; I've been busier than anticipated in recent weeks!))

As Evander looked over the several princes that slowly made their way into his meager abode, the gryphon's eyes immediately drew towards the armed guards dressed in black that entered the room, followed by a man who he assumed to be their boss... or owner, as the case might be in Essyrn. There was an expression of slight unease at the unanticipated display of power, but the feathered merchant wasn't going let it bother him, especially since he had a guess as to who this fellow was.

"Ah, master Khosrawi. A pleasure to finally meet you in person," he said with a slight nod towards Parsa, continuing in Essyrni as earlier. As more guests began to filter in, those who knew anything about gryphon body language might pick up that their host was looking a bit nervous; his ears were laid back slightly, his wings were shifting every so often... what was he getting himself into with this?

With most of his guests having taken their seat of choice, Evander sat up on his haunches to address the gathering.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," he began, "I am Evander Pelagius Blackfeather, the second, and as I'm sure you are all aware from my letter, I represent a trade company from Adela here in this wonderful city. Unfortunately, we have run into a spat of bad fortunes recently. We've lost several caravans to foul weather and bandits in recent times, and while we have many goods that would be profitable ventures here, no one in our homeland is willing to put up any money to finance further convoys, which is why I have asked your presence here."

Evander then returned to a more relaxed position, curled up on his cushion, before continuing.

"With that being said, the night is still very young and there is plenty of time to talk business. Please, eat. I realize what is served is perhaps not customary, but it is all I have access to and it would be wrong of me to have guests and not offer anything to eat."
#13
It had been a stressful, almost dizzying few weeks for Evander. It had started with what seemed like a normal day, or what had been normal for the past several months; supplies at the guild's storehouse were low, like had become usual thanks to a series of missing shipments this season. However, upon arriving at the storehouse, the gryphon was greeted by a letter addressed to him stuck under the wooden gate. The company was running low on funds for another trip to Essyrn and unless outside funding was secured, operations in the desert city would be seen as too costly to continue.

Enter the present day. Evander, being the trade company's local liaison and the most knowledgeable of Essyrni culture, was tasked with finding said funding. Weeks of asking around, sending letters, and requisitioning resources had culminated in what the gryphon would hope to be an opportunity to find a business partner.

He gazed over the main room of his humble abode as the sun began to set in the western sky; it wasn't much, but it would have to do with his limited resources. With the help of a friend earlier that day, he had managed to arrange the room into a long, low-lying table surrounded by cushions. His ears and tail flickered nervously as the hired servant laid out what in rural, coastal Adela would have been seen as an opulent feast; a main course of fresh fish sliced into thin slivers and wrapped around strips of cucumber, shredded carrots and chopped herbs, rolled in salt and freshly ground black pepper, several, more local side offerings including grain and parsley salads and platters of dates, grapes and figs. Would it be enough for his expected company?

Almost completely lost in his worries, the feathers on the back of the gryphon's neck stood tall as he heard the first knock on the door. Oh dear... are they already here? he thought. It was time to see if his idea of asking some of the merchant princes for money would pay off or not...

Taking his place at the head of the prepared table, Evander had his hired servant for the night answer there door. With a deep breath, he collected his thoughts and put a slight grin in the corners of his beak as the first few of his guests arrived.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen." he said in fluent, almost perfect, Essyrni.

Caw-caw, mother-flockers! It's ya boi Klezmer here, and I have been away for FAR TOO LONG!

Anyway, I've got a cute little mousie bard Leofwine who primarily travels around Serendipity, and he needs some plot love! Open to most things with him, be that shenanigans or more serious plots.

Additionally, I've got my gryphon Evander whose profile I gave a massive overhaul some months ago. He also needs some plot love. He's a trader and merchant down in Essyrn working with a caravan company in Adela. Also open to most things with him.

It is good to be back, and hopefully this turns into something good! :D

Wants and Limits / Limits and Wants v2!
May 27, 2019, 06:56:36 PM
PLAYER WANTS

What types of plots are you interested in playing?
For the most part, adventures and general social threads interest me the most, just seeing how two characters interact with each other. Combat threads just for the sake of combat, however, are not very interesting.

What types of plots are you not interested in playing?
I'm not really into casual plots involving gods or demons, as they, I think, are just by nature better suited for things on a larger scale than just some random adventure with a stranger.

How often can you reply to any given thread?
Usually within a couple weeks, although my mental and emotional state can often affect this. While I have no problem with prodding and checking in after a couple weeks, please understand that I have to be in a specific state of mind to write clear, decent responses to role-play threads.

What is the longest you're willing to wait for a reply to a thread?
Basically as long as you take to reply. I am a patient gryphon!

Are you open to RPing over instant messengers? If so, what's the best way to contact you and what times are you generally available?
Never tried it.

Are you open to post volleying?
I wouldn't mind, although don't expect it to happen very often.

Anything else?
For future reference: I try to provide at least a couple decent sized paragraph in my replies. I'd like to at least see more than just a couple of sentences in yours! I also like seeing clear, concise writing, so please don't be vague with settings and such.

PLAYER LIMITS

What are you limits regarding powerplay/godmoding?
Absolutely not acceptable unless there is a good plot reason for it. Like most of my limits here, this is less a hard limit and more something I would prefer to talk about beforehand.

What are your limits in regards to romantic situations?
No problems with romance, just read the below statement....

What are your limits in regards to sex?
If a romantic relationship gets to a point where the characters involved would possibly start engaging in sexual activity, I would prefer such activity to be implied. I am not comfortable with writing sexually explicit material on a public forum, even if such material is marked with "Mature".

What are your limits in regards to pregnancy within plots?
Depends on the circumstance, but generally speaking I am not comfortable with character pregnancy unless it is a necessary element for character development.

What are your limits in regards to violent scenes?
I have no problems, just keep the gore to a reasonable level

What are your limits in regards to abuse/rape in plots?
I have no qualms with abuse, so long as it serves a plot purpose. I prefer to avoid anything terribly extreme whenever possible. Please ask when thinking about such ideas.

Are you okay with characters being transformed against their will?
I'd prefer if I was asked first.

What about healing?
I have no problem, just inform me beforehand as to what you're doing.

Anything else?
I'd just like to ask that you respect my limits. That's all.

Serendipity / Leofwine; travelling bard

__________________QUICK STATS
Name: Leofwine
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Species: Mousefolk
Ethnicity: N/A
Height: 3'8"
Weight: 85 lbs.
Occupation: Bard
Residence: Travels around Serendipity, with occasional forays into Connlaoth

__________________IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description
Leofwine is not the tallest of mousefolk, which is saying something for a race of anthropomorphic rodents that barely reach 4'0" at their tallest, standing at a mere 3'8", but he is at least somewhat handsome by mousefolk standards, with white fur, silver hair and orange-brown eyes. He often wears his hair cropped short on one side, with the top left shaggy and the right side twisted into a braid.

Leofwine often wears a red tunic with yellow stripes on the sleeves and a brown doublet over that. His trousers are grey, and he usually does not wear any footwear. He can usually be seen wearing a floppy beret-like hat with a red feather sticking out the back.

Personality
Leofwine is a passionate artist and kind soul. He is quite witty, seeming to have a story relevant to almost any situation one can think of, and loves a good joke or two even it's directed at him. That said, he has a problem keeping his feelings hidden and his mouth shut, which more often than not lands him in trouble with people.

Magic/Abilities
Musicianship:
Leofwine is a bard of average talent, able to pluck out more than few standards on his lute during a night's performance at a tavern. More complicated pieces, while not beyond his abilities, would require substantial practice.

Swordsmanship:
Equally average is Leofwine's ability with a sword. He's gotten into a few scuffles with his temper, and his broadsword has saved his tail several times in the past. He'd be no match for trained guards or knights, but despite his reach disadvantage he can hold his own against your average thug.
