Title: To Slay A Giant... [Wycliff]
Post by: TheHopeseeker on January 31, 2017, 12:31:29 AM
@Wycliff

The Connloathian temperatures were still far too cold for Ignis' liking, even after his "adventure" with Kairius and Fade, he couldn't bring himself to become accustomed to this country. Old habits died hard, he supposed, and his body was simply trying to tell him what his mind had finally begun to accept; it was time to go home.

His bags were packed, minimal as they were, within the day, his farewells said and done the next morn before he set out, the road unravelling before him as he ventured into the great unknown once again. It was good to be moving again, the be free of the constraints of man and city. While the company of his companions had been a pleasant exception to his general view of humanity, he would not be swayed from his ways in a few simple weeks, and it was with a great sense of freedom that he left the city behind.

Dawn broke above him in brilliant shades of gold and yellow, streaking across the landscape like the first brush strokes on a blank canvas. These were the things he had missed while trapped within the city; the beauty of the dawn, the fresh, crisp air, and constant chatter of the wildlife around him.

It was good to be on the road once more.

Aven watched the youth as he walked, the dawn casting darkness over the land not so fortunate to be in the golden light's favor, shadows that enveloped the Mage as if he were kin. Youth, huh? How cynical he had grown. The boy couldn't be more than a few years younger than Aven himself.
Aven sighed. Nevertheless, he is a Mordecai, and I can't underestimate him. Hopefully, he won't be as hilt-happy as most.
"Quite a beautiful sunrise, isn't it?" Aven stepped out from behind the nearby foliage, seeming to part from the darkness as if he were part of it. "A shame that such a light only darkens that which it refuses to touch."

The sudden voice broke through his thoughts alike to a fist smashing through glass, unnaturally bright blue hues snapping down to focus on the source of the voice. He only realised after the fact that his hand had shot to the dagger sheathed on his thigh, fingers right around the warm steel. The man emerging from the foliage covering the terrain surrounding the path didn't exactly pose an intimidating figure at the present, but trust was not something Ignis would throw out willy nilly.

One foot sliding back into a defensive stance, he kept one hand loosely wrapped around the hilt of Harbinger whilst watching the man before him, eyes narrowed as he catalogued every little detail, "I am not in the mood for riddles, stranger. What is your business lurking here?"

Aven sighed once more. Just as hilt-happy. Perhaps this one was the wrong choice for such a delicate mission? The thought had to be considered; after all, one mistake would throw off his plans by miles. Aven inspected the boy's stance: defensive, weapon still sheathed. A tad jumpy maybe, but then again, Aven had snuck up on him for this exact purpose. He'd give it a passing score; on to the next.
Aven's eyebrows raise in mock surprise, and his arms and shoulders form a slight shrug, feigning innocence. "Lurking? I'm just passing through this area, nothing more." A number of black particles appear out of thin air and lazily float around him, barely noticeable in the light of the rising sun.

Ignis raised an eyebrow, exasperation painted across his face as he snorted. Did this man think he was an idiot? It was clear he had been waiting there, concealed within the foliage. His gaze traced the dark particles floating away from the strange man, before flicking back to his face. Head tilted ever so slightly to the side, he spoke, "I am neither blind nor stupid. Speak."

Aven watches Ignis's eyes trace the particles. Good, it seems his perception is up to snuff. The question is, exactly how good is he with that dagger of his...
A smile spreads across Aven's face. "Fine, then, Ignis. Truth be told, I'm here to hire you for a most peculiar job, one that pays far better than a pompous duke ever would." His black-speckled eyes glance toward Ignis' dagger. "At the moment, however, I find myself without the final bit of proof I need that you are right for said task. Would you be able to show me your skill with that blade?"

Ignis' eyebrows shot up in a clear sign of disbelief, his hand unconsciously tightening around the dagger. It was more than a little disconcerting to know this strange man knew his coming and goings, or about Kairius at least. Frowning, he weighed the options in his mind for a few moments, eyes never leaving the man before him.

"Just what is this "most peculiar job"? I won't be doing squat for you if you think you can pull the mystery card." He warned. He couldn't deny the strong calling to return home, but this man struck his curiosity, a most fearsome beast he had yet to tame.

Aven smirked, waggling a finger while tiny black specks played around it. Looks like I've piqued his interest. "It's a delicate plan, I can't afford to toss such info around casually," He snaps his fingers, an idea seemingly occurring to him, "I'll tell you what, Ignis; you succeed in cutting me with that blade of yours, and I'll tell you the details of the job, then you can decide whether or not you want in." Aven's shadow writhes unnaturally behind him, as if alive.

Ignis snorted at that, finally releasing his hold on the aforementioned dagger to fold his arms across his chest. His expression was a mix of disdain and amusement as he watched Aven, now, blue eyes impossible to read. "I hate to have to tell you this, but I don't work that way. If you want me, hire me, otherwise, get out of my way."

Aven breathes a sigh of relief, his shadow returning to normal. He wasn't a gambling man, but having rolled the dice for the second time that day, Aven was feeling extremely fortunate. If it weren't for his appearance, he'd consider going to town on a few card games with his current luck. "You pass once more. I apologize for the deception, but it was quite imperative that I ensure you have no outstanding bias toward mages. I'm glad to see my judge of character hasn't yet failed me." Aven performs a formal bow, sweeping his arm along his chest in the process. "You may call me Aven, I am a Shadow Mage, and the currently seeking skilled individuals to assist me in bringing an end to the Civil war in this country."

Ignis' eyes narrowed at that, slight curiosity managing to claw its way back into his gaze. This man was...different, that was for sure. Whether his motives were as he claimed, or something else entirely, only time would tell. It was certainly an interesting offer he extended, but Ignis didn't trust him, not so early in the peace with his 'tests'.

"Is that so?" He asked at length, shifting his weight from foot to foot, "Tell me this; how did you know where to find me, Aven?"

The Mage lets out a tenuous laugh, rubbing the back of his neck. "Don't give me that much credit. I was in the area investigating a village that was found decimated, when I happened across a large Mordecai field, which led me to you and that girl, escorting the newest member of Grand Duke Calent's puppet collection." He shifts his stance into a more relaxed position. "I've never seen your face in Reajh, the Mordecai headquarters, which indicated you were either a new recruit, or a mercenary, and I took a gamble that you were the latter." Aven makes direct eye contact with Ignis, the black particles roaming through his silver irises slowing their erratic behavior, giving off an aura of deadly seriousness. "Your eyes crave excitement, I can see it, Ignis. Your potential is far beyond a simple escort, don't you agree?"

Ignis snorted again at that, a more relaxed expression on his face now. "Stroking my ego wknt't get you anywhere, but I'll admit I'm interested. It's true I'd like to see that prick of a Grand Duke dethroned, but it's not my war to fight," here, he paused, giving Aven an unreadable look as he tapped his fingers on his arm, "For now."

Ignis couldn't help the chuckle that slipped from his lips, a deep sound, "Am I really that shallow?" He asked amusedly, "Generally, I'd say yes. But this time...Maybe I'll help simply because you," he pointed an index finger at the mage, "You intriuge me."

Aven can't help but grin at such a dubious statement. "Really? You would oppose an entire regime of Mage-hating psychopaths, on the platform of learning what makes me tick?" The young man's eyes narrow slightly. "I wish you luck on that errand: pardon if this comes off as cocky, but I am not such a simple soul to figure."

Ignis smirked, the expression purely vindictive. "Oh I'm counting on it." He murmured, blue eyes even brighter now, "And in regards to the Mage hating phychopaths...well, I don't suppose you've ever seen a Mordecai pitted against a Mordecai." He grinned, then, the expression feral, and full of teeth. Like a wolf, waiting to snap up its prey.

"Not yet, but I've seen the shock in their faces when their power fails them." Aven's eyes flashed, but a different emotion played across their silvery depths: something dangerous and volatile, and gazing into them, Ignis might have felt a sudden unease, as if his Mordecai field were struggling to contain a force beyond it's control.

Ignis could only nod to that, prickling his own power at his fingertips for but a moment before he banished it once more. The look in Aven's eyes was...different, to say the least, but it only served to make his intrigue all the stronger. Even if it meant delaying his original goal, he had a feeling that helping this man would lend him knowledge, not to mention throwing some water over the fire of his need for excitement. Offering a smirk, he thrust out his left hand, cocking an eyebrow at the silver haired man as he waited.

Aven faces the rising dawn, his silver hair glimmering in the golden light. "It's quite simple, really. This country is founded on the belief that magic is evil; therefore, the Mordecai, magic negaters, have become the symbol of absolute justice to the people of Connloath. No ruler can undermine their authority, especially one that wishes to expel magic completely from Connloath's borders." Aven turned his head to Ignis. "In essence, the only ones who can truly end this war are the Mordecai, for only they have the authority to judge the sins of Grand Duke Calent."

Ignis merely hummed in response, though whether the sound was agreement or simply acknowledgement, it was impossible to tell. Turning to take in the same view as Aven, he hefted the bags on his back a little higher, watching the streaks of gold break across the horizon. It was true, what Aven said, the people of Connloath looked up to the Mordecai in ways he couldn't quite fathom, giving them the power to veto even the Grand Duke, the equivalent of a King! It was almost hard to believe how many of the Mordecai would blindly follow the Duke into his mad purging of all mages, a majority of them aligned with his views. How they could be such fools as to harbour such hate against the mages who had done nothing wrong, he didn't know. Yes, it was true that the late Grand Duke had been assassinated by a Mage, but that did not mean the rest of his kin should suffer for his actions.

And he'd said all that out loud hadn't he?

Fuck.

Aven gives a hearty laugh, tapping Ignis on the shoulder as he walks past. "Careful, Ignis, your altruism is showing." He gestures for Ignis to follow, his robe fluttering in the morning breeze. "Nevertheless, that haughty mindset of yours will come in handy when blending in with the other Mordecai. You simply need to act as if all mages were below you, and it is your sworn duty to ensure they are kept from harming the world with their 'evil'."

Ignis made a face at the shadow Mage's back as he walked past, shaking his head irritatedly before he huffed softly, a small smirk breaking out over his face. Swinging on his heel, he left the sunrise at his back, keeping pace with Aven as they walked. He let the silence settle for a few minutes once the Mage had finished with his advice, looping his hands through his pack's straps as they walked, before he eventually spoke, "So, who else have you recruited to your cause? If I'm going to be working with you to take down the Douche, I want to at least know who else I'm gonna be stuck with."

Aven continued walking, though as the sun continued to rise, his pace slowed bit by bit. "About that... as you can imagine, finding people willing to oppose the regime in such an up close and personal manner has been... difficult." He gave a nervous chuckle. "So far, it is only you and I, with a solid line on Captain Disgaua of Ansgar's Hand, another strong Mordecai. Part of what your mission will be is to find other Mordecai within their ranks that dissent to the war." At that point, Aven seemed to be run down, as if he hadn't slept in days.

Ignis felt a shudder race up his spine as his Mordecai ability immediately tried to eject Aven from his shadow, the proximity of the Mage enough to set it off, but he quelled it quickly. Wouldn't exactly want to negate his new ally's magic while he was...wherever he was. Though, whether it would work on this one...he was different, strange, intriguing. Shaking his head, the white haired Mordecai sighed softly before starting to walk again, unable to erase the fact that Aven was, literally, right behind him from his mind.

Dawn soon turned to fully fledged day as Ignis walked, the Connloath landscape passing by. He stopped only once to eat, keeping his face to the sun so that his shadow would fall out behind him. Evening was soon drawing near, and as the sun began to sink beneath the small woodland area he had found himself in, Ignis began looking for a place to make camp for the night.

Aven's eyebrows shoot up. "Really, now? Well, that's embarrassing, hopefully I didn't put you out too much. Regardless, we still have a ways to go, now that I'm rested I can walk through the daylight." He sits down next to the fire, the blaze reflecting off his eyes eerily. A few of the black specks that float around Aven are consumed by the fire, casting a pitch dark shadow behind the each of them on every occurrence. On one of them, something catches Aven's attention, and a shadow tendril springs from the ground and strikes at the bush behind them, pulling out a decently large rabbit, struggling against the fierce construction of the shadow. Aven smiles. "Dinner?"

Ignis did little more than raise an eyebrow as he settled himself down near the fire, legs crossed and hands resting on his knees. Aven shrugs. "Fine, more for me." The shadow tendril brings the poor creature over to Aven, who grabs it by the throat. Black particles gather around the small beast, and sink into it, causing black veins to appear on it's hide. The veins spread quickly, and after about ten seconds of struggling, the rabbit goes limp, becoming pitch dark in complexion before bursting into millions of particles, which swirl into Aven's waiting maw.
The last of the particles disappear into his mouth, and he closes it, licking his lips and letting out a sigh. "A bit gamey, I'll admit, but not bad. Could've used some spices, maybe a bit of nutmeg and basil." He glances at Ignis, taking closer note of the sword. "You naturally reached for your dagger before, is there a reason you would not draw that sword?"

Ignis watched him devour the rabbit with a half disgusted, half bemused expression, shaking his head again when he finished and looking to the sword draped over his knees. At Aven's comment, he snorted and drew the dagger from its sheath on his thigh, leaning it towards the light and watching the flames dance across its surface. It was clear that the blade was not meant for battle, the design curved and beautiful, but not the strongest. "I could see you weren't going to attack. Otherwise I would have drawn Harbinger."

Ignis chuckled and shook his head before slipping the knife back into its sheath, "Harbinger," he began, lifting the sword from his knee and drawing it from its case with a loud shring, "Is this."

The sword was a pure silver colour, engravings running down the middle in intertwining white and black. The tip was razor sharp, filed down to a tiny point, while the cross guard was a fine curl of golden metal, melded together in a swirling pattern, with a fiery sun engraved in the centre, a dark ruby coloured gem imbedded in the middle of it. The pommel was wrapped in finely dried leather of a dark black hue, thickening as it neared the cross guard and thinning as it went the other way.

He replied, offering no further explanation as he merely rested his hand on the hilt and lifted his gaze to Aven's, meeting the man's eyes for a moment with a look that could not quite be named, before dropping blue hues to the fire once more.

Aven's eyes harden for a moment. "Do tell, Ignis: do you mean to say it is a magic devouring weapon? Or perhaps shares your power of nullification?" The silver irises flash in the firelight, a dangerous look crossing the young man's face. It occurred to Aven for the first time in a long while that he could actually perish, in light of their discussion. It was not fear that sparked within his chest, however; it was a certain thrill, one he'd believed forgotten.

"Harbinger is a vessel," Ignis replied slowly, his gaze transfixed by the crackling fire, it's flames growing ever brighter in the swiftly descending darkness, "Whatever energy you feed into it, it amplifies, be it magic energy, or the opposite." His eyes lifted then, scanning Aven's face for any sign of comprehension of what that meant. What potential Ignis truly had.

A flash of greed darts across his face, but it gone as quickly as it came, replaced by what Ignis could infer as contentment. "I see now. You truly are what I was looking for, after all." As their gaze lengthens, Ignis' vision will start to darken, the flickering light from the fire seeming to grow ever distant. Ignis will not sense any magic being used should he search, only a deepening sense of dread. "I should warn you, though; be careful the depth of which you seek into my world. It does not give quarter."

Ignis felt a shudder run up his spine, a cold hand curling around his heart, lingering just off the edges. His face showed no expression in reaction to Aven's actions, only a slight tightening around his eyes showing his discomfort. He would not allow this man to indimidate him, not now, nor any time in the future. If it ever came about that it seemed like Aven was trying to force him, or scare him in any way, he would not hesitate to use Harbinger, "I'll admit your world is a dark one," he leaned forwards, an unbridled shadow darkening electric blue hues to a deep navy, "But so is mine."

The light of the campfire vanishes from Ignis' vision, leaving only Aven and the black particles, the feeling of dread morphing into a dull pain in his head. The black particles around Aven begin to slowly gravitate toward Ignis, as if inviting him in. Aven's expression becomes wry. "Do not test this, Ignis. You are of no use to me transfigured."

Ignis refused to budge, ignoring the pain that lanced through his skull, the darkness that engulfed him, the shadows wrapping around him like welcoming arms. He would not back down.

The solid wall that slammed into place between them was as hard as any iron, crashing down with enough force to literally blow the two apart. The fire flickered and died with the shockwave, Harbinger flung from Ignis lap to skitter across the grass. Clipping his shoulder on the sturdy lines around their makeshift camp, Ignis cursed loudly before dropping to his knees, light flooding through his vision and nearly blinding him. "What the fuck."

Aven hurtles backward, tossed like a rag doll by the force of impact. Taken utterly by surprise, the mage has no time to react, slamming sideways into the trunk of a nearby tree, breaking his right arm. Aven grits his teeth, a trickle of black blood running down his cheek as he searches for the source of the attack. "Who DARES?"

Ignis grunted hoarsely as he raised himself upright, one knee still bent as he held a hand to his shoulder, "I think," he began tensely, "That was me." There was no mistaking the force of negative energy that the now dissipated wall had been made of, and if any Mage or Mordecai had been near, he would have known. "Self preservation I didn't know I had. Heh."

Aven struggles to his feet, straightening as a sick cracking noise echoes from his arm, as if the bone and tissue were repairing themselves. "Self-preservation is correct. Ignis Snow, do not throw your humanity away over something as little as pride." He sighs. "Believe me, I was not challenging you, merely warning. You told me of your interest in 'figuring me out', and I promise such will come with time. It is simply in your best interest that I tell you rather than you experiencing it yourself, don't you agree?"

Ignis merely huffed in reply, straightening with a small wince and walking over to collect Harbinger from where it had been thrown. Moving back over to the fire, he crouched down to kindle the flames back to life, not replying to Aven's words though he surely heard them.

Aven walks over to the rekindling fire, lounging on the opposite side. In the faint light, his arm can be seen twisting and realigning itself. He winces a few times during the process, but in the end, the appendage looks ordinary once more, no sign it had ever been mangled. "Regardless, we should refrain from any more staring contests." He chuckles at his own little joke. "By the way, I didn't ask: are you alright? You did take a tumble there."

Ignis drew in a breath, letting it out in a slow, calming sigh. The tension drained from his state with the simple act, leaving him weary and feeling more than a little foolish. "I'm fine." He replied tiredly, rotating the arm to prove his point. Luckily for him, he supposed, it had been his right arm. There might be some pain, but it would repair itself quickly.

Aven lays back. "Good. Now that we're completely alone, I think it's about time I told you the plan." He glances across the flames at Ignis, his arms crossed behind his head. "It's now or never if you want to back out: once you know, you're involved whether you like it or not."

There was no sound here. Not the typical sort, at any rate. The rush of wind and the soft musings of nature were gone, replaced instead by dark whispers and quiet wails like souls being carved and frightened into fear. It was cold, and there was no sight- only a vague sense of a million eyes upon him all at once. The man was racing through the shadows, not seeing his destination but knowing where he was going. The only feeling other than the pervading chill was the weight of his companion on his back, clinging with razor claws to black shaggy fur. There was a sharp tug in his gut, and then as quickly as it came, the shadows were gone. Cade was standing in His favorite of the animal forms- a large warg, sharp fangs protruding from his lower lip, snout curled over his teeth. Mythranys, the twisted fae Phouka, was crouched on his hunched shoulder, wide slitted eyes and eerie Cheshire smile placed on his unseeable face.

Despite his monstrous appearance, Cade's gaze was incredibly human, crimson and purple irises intent and searching. He was in this shape because it was simply quicker to travel in- even though he had swiftly passed through the shadow realm to arrive here. He made a low rumble in his throat and stepped forward, ears twitching. He thought this was the right place... But sometimes his shadowmeld was not an exact art. This didn't look familiar, even in the night. He walked a ways, the fae grumbling quietly about how they had made a wrong turn. Cade ignored him, paws hitting the earth with almost complete silence. But soon the rambling became too much, and he curled his long neck up to snap irritably at the catlike creature, growling. He didn't realize he had come to a halt in a small clearing until a voice made him whirl. Violet and ruby hues met the faces of two men around a fire, and the warg stiffened, immediately going on the defensive. He bared his teeth, but realized that they may not attack him if he was more men than beast. In a fluid shift of shadows and form, the wolflike monster was replaced with a very tall, wiry man, handsome face highlighted by the fire- scarred but strong, with dog like canines on both the top and bottom jaws, tan skin and dark clothing, with a tangle of jet black hair. His eyes were narrowed, and he slowly held up his calloused hands, the obsidian sword on his back untouched. Mythranys hissed, shadows around his form wavering like eerie tendrils. Cade stood still, wary and slightly alarmed at stumbling upon the two interesting individuals, since both we're armed and looked capable in their own ways.
"My apologies," he said slowly, low voice a deep rumble as the eight foot Eloquir Prince braced his feet apart, ready for anything. "I was simply trying to pass through; I mean no ill will towards you."

[Sure did. I apologise to Wycliff but I wanted to be the first t reply :P]

Ignis felt the approach of the man, creature, before he heard a sound, the tickle that raced up his spine followed by a sharp, burning pain in his right arm. It had been throbbing vaguely ever since his meeting with Aven, a constant reminder that this man was not completely human , but it had not been so bad as that he could not ignore it.

Now, the cursed appendage burst in a sharp, white hot agony he had felt rarely before, drawing a gasp from his lips as he bent at the waist, curling the alarm to his chest. The pain burned through him, but his vision was clear and focused, his ears as sharp as ever, and he could hardly have missed the appearance of the strange man, his proximity only making the right arm's curse react all the stronger.

Lurching to his feet, he collected Harbinger on his way upright, clutching it firmly in his non-dominant hand and letting his arm's magic flow through the blade, the forceful throbbing abating a little, but creating a bright, iridescent light, most likely harmful to Aven with his shadowy existence.

[[OOC: DAMN that's a beautiful post, Camrie. I'm a fan of your voice, seems like this isn't your first rodeo lol. Also, no harm no foul, Hope.]]

Aven opened his mouth to begin Ignis' briefing, but closed it abruptly. The shadows in the area had become anxious, excited almost. Aven had to wonder what such an occurrence could mean, the sense of it picking at his brain. It almost reminded Aven of the day he...
Aven's eyes flash. Interesting. It wasn't often the shadows bore their secrets so openly, even to him. He could only surmise it was not of their will that they do so, but another's. As the darkness writhed a distance away from the two of them, a grin spread unbidden across Aven's visage, full of excitement he hadn't felt in a long time. "Something's here."
Sure enough, his statement  was met by two strange figures, one a large warg, the other what looked like a Fey creature made of darkness. However, a bright, stinging light interrupted his observation of the two newcomers, and he squinted through the pain at Ignis, who was fully up in arms at their appearance, brandishing Harbinger and that cursed light. Aven took note of the warg a shadowy transformation and words, but diverted his attention to Ignis immediately after, his grin becoming a scowl. "Sleep, Ignis." A thick tendril of shadow emerges from the darkness behind Ignis, striking with incredible speed at his unsuspecting neck, intending to knock him summarily unconscious.

[Thank you! I was nervous about it, so I'm glad you liked it! <3]

The Banished Prince's arrival was met with a blinding burst of light and a gasp of pain- or was it surprise? Caderin's battle honed instincts made him jerk and release a sharp breath, pupils of his duo toned eyes shrinking as the light met his retinas. He felt the Phouka on his shoulder clamp needle claws into his flesh and take shelter behind his back, a high screech of alarm and pain rising at the glow emanating from the stranger's arm, which caused Myth's shadow-accustomed eyes to be rendered temporarily blind. The man leapt backwards, unsure what would happen next. The light-bearer had wielded his weapon. Whether or not he would use it remained to be seen. Cade was not once to charge into senseless battle, so he forced the tightness of adrenaline in his throat to abate to a slow ebb, lowering his hands. The shadows in the night blackness coiled and writhed to his defense, sensing one of their own's oppression. But with a twitch of his shoulders, they grudgingly obeyed his silent command to stand down until a more immediate danger was present. His voice was low and quiet, as though trying to gentle a murderous animal.
"I don't seek to-" He began, but He was cut off by the other man's companion.
A tendril of the very shadow that Cade paid homage to seemed to dart from the abyss and strike the lightbringer in the back of the neck, with a murmur from the mage's lips. The ex-prince and his familiar observed with intent, suspicious eyes the exchange, and the tall man's demeanor became defensive, reserved, waiting to see if this stranger would turn on him, as well.
"I assure you, I want no trouble. But I won't quail if you seek a tussle with me,"
He warned darkly, for he believed in fair odds, and a warning was honorable.

Ignis glanced at Aven sharply, a savage look in his eyes that was clearly not completely him. The darkness from a few minutes before was returned in full force, dark rings of black surrounding his irises. His attention fixed on the shadow Mage, he did not see the whip of darkness as it descended. A low grunt left his lips as consciousness fled, Harbinger slipping from his hands to land on the grass, light gone in a flash as Ignis collapsed bonelessly in the soft grass

Aven stood slowly, an exasperated sigh escaping his lips as he gazed at Ignis' unconscious form, as the shadow tendril receded back into the darkness. Caderin may see the shadows he controlled recoil from him almost in fear, as though he had exerted dominance over them, demanded compliance. "We'll need to work on that curse of yours." His eyes shifted from Ignis to the newcomers, and he smiled once more. "I apologize for my companion, he doesn't have much control over himself when it come to beings such as us." Aven takes notice of the tall one's regal manner; it reminded him of himself, though perhaps to a greater degree. It was obvious the young man was from a different land, but he looked almost the same age as Aven, despite the former's height advantage. Aven sweeps into a low bow. "It is a pleasure to meet one so loved by the shadows. I am called Aven," He straightens, his silver irises teeming with dark particles.  "What, pray tell, may I call you and your companion?"

Cade's ever watchful gaze took in the fearful shadows, who despite their nature, seemed nearly afraid of the man standing before him. His enlightened companion had crumpled into unconciousness, making the former prince raise a brow, letting his lowered hands fall to his sides. Defensiveness was not needed now, it would seem. The shadowed man felt his friend drop from his back, standing between the two strangers and puffing up fur that was indistinguishable from the rest of him- Mythranys' form was an inky shadow. No light could breach it, for it was always as pitch black as the darkness from which he was created. Shadowmist that curled from him extended, his permanent Cheshire smile seeming fierce as he hissed. Myth knew that one who could manipulate shadows- such as Cade and, apparently, this Aven- could touch him, and therefore harm him and his master. The Prince of Nothing bent his massive height down, gently stroking a spot just below the phouka's tiny dragonfly wings. The catlike creature's long tufted tail waved in annoyance.
"Peace, Mythranys." Cade soothed, not taking his eyes from the man as he voiced apologies and introductions.. His canines were revealed as he spoke, disapearing as soon as his mouth was closed. "And I apologize on behalf of my friend. Rudeness is his modus operandi. I am Caderin Terramir- though many simply know me as Cade. I regret that I have disturbed your camp,"
He said in polite apology, drawing himself up to his full height so he could bow in the gentlemanly fashion, though in all honesty, Cade was very little a gentleman. But such was his upbringing. His violet-and-blood toned eyes shifted, their hues seeming to dance and change the more one looked into them. They were intent, discerning, trying to read the stranger.

Aven watches the phouka sound its challenge with gentle amusement. Meeting Cade's eyes, the fallen prince would see obvious appraisal in Aven's gaze, as if he were recalculatinga complex equation in his head to include a new variable. "Well met, Caderin Terramir, and do not worry, it was no trouble; in fact, I was waiting for that little curse of his to flare up. As silly as it sounds, I suppose I'm still human enough for the curse to view me as such. Strange, if you consider the country we're in, where both you and I are considered genuine monsters marked for extermination." The corner of his mouth curves upward, his eyes narrowing ever so slightly. "So, what brings a royal of the shadows to Connloath, of all places?" Beside Aven sits his shadow, a slight shade darker than light would dictate, which seems to be inspecting Caderin as well, no innate inclination to serve the prince. It does, however, take an interest in the phouka, shifting toward it curiously.

Cade leaned back until his shoulders met with the sturdy trunk of an oak, crossing his arms as the material of his dark renegade coat rustled. The hilt of his sword was barely visible behind him, though the strap slung diagonally across his torso was indication enough that it was there. His nonchalant pose was less cocky, more predatory, like a wolf reclining as it surveyed a possible threat.
"Indeed," he nodded with deliberate movements. "Not the friendliest of countries toward our ilk. Though I prefer to think of myself as a companion of shadows rather than a mage. But those lines are not so blurred in the minds of Connlaoth. And, human though I'm not, I'm sure my species matters little to their mordecai."
He inclined his head to the lightbringer, face curious, but reserved.
"What compels you to travel with a cursed man? I ask only out of interest."
The man's shadow was peering strangely at Mythranys, who made a low growl in his throat, like a cat prodded one to many times. The Phouka recoiled, vanishing in a flare of Shadowfire and materializing on a branch above Cade's head, triangular ears apparently folded back on his dark outline.
"Keep ya lil' twin to yeself!"
The creature hissed, drawing an amused chuckle from Cade. He shook his head, but his attention was drawn back by Aven's questions. The man looked suspicious, causing the prince's eyes to flare briefly.
"I was seeking to visit a friend."
He said slowly. It was not quite a lie, for he had planned on visiting Nasrin after his business in Connlaoth was concluded- but Nas' lodgings were in Serendipity.

Aven closes his eyes for a moment, darkness twisting up around him, ruffling his clothes. The shadowy tempest envelopes him completely, before disappearing abruptly in a burst of black particles, revealing Aven in what looks to be a noble's wear: a fine black cloth jacket, with silver ruffled silk fixed between the lapels, complimented by matching pants, all embroidered with intricate silver patterning. He gives Cade a welcoming smile. "I happen to be forming a collective of unique individuals, the purpose of which to save this country from the choking grasp of Grand Duke Calent. This young man, Ignis by name, is one such individual, a key component in my plan to overthrow said tyrant." Aven makes a simple gesture with his hand, and his shadow retreats to it's original position. "Visiting a friend, hm? They must be important to you if you're willing to brave the Mordecai infested lands of Connloath to see them."
Taking a brief pause to think, Aven crosses his arms, shifting his stance to something more business oriented. If I could convince Caderin here to join up with us, it may be possible to accelerate the plan by at least one step; if I'm correct, at least, and he is able to access the shadow realm. The question is, why would he help... "Pardon my intrusion, but your posture and mannerisms point to a noble upbringing. Perhaps you can sympathize with my plight: being both a noble and Mage in Connloath is not a feat one can realistically accomplish under Calent's reign, thus I've set out to change things for the better."

Cade's brows went up at the display, watching his noble clothes appear and vanish at will. His words made the Fallen Prince stand upright, leaning in slightly as he surveyed the man and his unconscious companion with fascinated scrutiny.
"Ambitious," he praised with a startled laugh, shaking his head in wonderment. "Not many would have the ballocks to even attempt a cout. Is this sir Ignis the only such man you have recruited? Or has you effort gathered a substantial following?"
He questioned, hooking the thumb of one hand in the belt of his trousers, long coat waving as shadows undulated beneath his feet. It seemed he had stumbled upon something that was at the very least a noteworthy venture. Now that he was fairly certain the shadow weaver wouldn't attack him, his stance lost his stiffness, and he stood with the quiet grace of a predator. He had been running from his tyrant father for years, never trusting many, getting himself into countless scraps and tender morsels of trouble. Care had learned the hard way that it was best to always watch his own back, always be ready for anything. And never let anyone see who he truly was in his heart of hearts. He'd been many things- a pirate, a mercenary, a rogue who fought the strong to gain justice for the weak. But this man saw only the noble blood. It was understandable, but he bristled at the reminder of who sired him. His jaw twitched, and this time his chuckle was dry and humorless.
"Aven, I have had enough of nobility to last me a lifetime."
He said darkly, looking off into the night as he waited for the pound in his temple to abate.  His words were cryptic and mysterious, and one may wonder, as they observed the pain of the world in the man's violet and crimson eyes, just what sort of horrors had been wrought on him. Thinking about his past unearthed too many emotions he had buried long ago. Without returning his gaze to the mage, he spoke again, voice rough and brusque.
"But yes, I can sympathize. Though why it is of import who whelped me, I haven't the faintest notion. Regardless, I am not from Connlaoth."
He finally returned his regard to the other, face harder than before.

Aven blinked, cursing inwardly. It'd been a gamble to bank on the possibility of noble heritage, his third roll of lady luck's dice that day. Can't win them all, I suppose... Still, Aven saw something more behind the pain that clouded Cade's mind: a will to carry on, the unwavering belief that the world can be changed. It was the same strength that Aven leaned on all these years, the thought that his life, his efforts could make all the difference in the fate of others. Aven had misjudged Cade, but perhaps that was for the better, so long as the same mistake was not repeated.
Aven breaks eye contact, turning to the crackling flames beside him. "I cannot pretend to know your past, nor understand your thoughts; but I know the face of betrayal when I see it. You've glimpsed the true face of aristocracy, and been made to bear its mark." His brow furrows at the firelight. "But do not misunderstand; this fight is not about nobility, nor power, nor Connloath itself. It is about a being's right to exist as they are, not as some ass on a throne dictates they shall." Aven's stalwart gaze returns to meet Cade. "You said it yourself, it is not often that one is found with the gall to oppose the order of society, to challenge a social norm. Small in number we may be, but with every soul that joins, our strength grows by the hundreds." Aven clenches his fists. "You say you've had enough of nobility for a lifetime? Should you stay complacent, such a wish will never come to fruition. Tyrants do not simply disappear, they must be torn down."

Cade's narrowed eyes watched Aven as he speaks again, championing his cause and heralding the drive and the benefits of his motley crew. He mentions the betrayal he sees within the shadow Prince, how he had witnessed the horrors that nobility brought. For a moment, his face twists in bitter remembrance of his father's cruelty, of nearly dying in a tiny cell where he could not even move his head. It was his despair and his inner turmoil that called his companion to his side- Mythranys climbed to rest once more on the bend of his good shoulde,r eyeing the stranger with protective warning for his Eloquir master. Cade made a gesture with his hand, indicating he was not bothered by the words, though he was. The mention of his complacency makes the man cock his head, for complacency was not essentially within his nature. No, he simply had not considered the civil war to be his responsibility. He owed no debt to Connlaoth, and to risk his life and his location for them was not something that had appealed to him. But, though it irked him to admit it, he could help the mage's cause. He brought a scarred, calloused hand to his jaw, examining the other man with dangerous consideration. His murdered friend, Markulan, has said that you could tell much from a person's hands. Cade's were battered and lined with battle trophies, rough of skin and deft after years of holding a sword and manipulating the shadows. He had, in his life, done many things that even old men could only dream of having done. And now he was being slotted to join a group to defy an entire monarchy, as if he had not given enough to the demanding world. Complacent- how wrong a word that was. But he made no indication of his inner debate, finally returning his arms to their crossed positions, standing tall and straight.
"You are correct in assuming you will never know what I have survived, but I concede that your cause is just. So I ask you to consider this: you cannot garauntee your plan will be successful. My life is not of importance any longer, but if I am to to throw it away, I would need to know that it would make a difference."

Aven lets loose a mirthful puff of air from his nostrils. "You say that as if such a standard were possible to achieve: no plan is without a level of risk. This world of ours does not entertain certainties, whether of success or death." Aven turns around in the middle of speaking, taking his seat next to the flames once more. He stares into their chaotic light intently. It seemed the spark of will he'd seen in Cade's eyes was no more than a reflection of his own. A pity, but the role was not his to dictate the path of another. "So, no, I will not spout meaningless rhetoric to you, pretending as though I had the perfect plan. At the same time, I have no use for a man seeking his own grave. If your life means so little to you, be on your way; it seems I misjudged you twice."

Cade nods along to his words, approving, despite his previous resistance. His blood and violet eyes shift with thought, toe tapping against the grass and soil. Aven's words set ablaze the grin that had been lingering on the edges of his lips- thought it didn't seem to be a mouthful one. Rather the tired rebellion of a man who had been told this same thing, albeit in different ways, one too many times. He shook his head, looking into the night as if it held some divine secret that would grant him peace.
"Forgive my words- I did not mean that my life was not important to me." he corrected, fingers toying with the buttons on his cuffs in a nonchalant fashion. "I am, in fact, quite fond of myself. No, I only wished to indicate that I am little to anyone these days. Only a few even know I still live. Don't be so quick to condemn a man as suicidal when he simply is without valued kith or kin."
He reprimanded blandly, as though it didn't really matter to him, as of he were jjust going through the motions. But it mattered. Perhaps all too much. It was probably for the best that he was being sent off, seeing as how he would probably only draw unwanted attention to the cause, what with the entirety of Eloquir's royals paying for him to be brought back. He stood straight to his full height, quietly bowing to Aven before turning to leave- but he saw that the lightbringer was still unconscious. It had been a bit long, hadn't it? He frowned, crouching down at the man's side and rolling him over, seemingly ignoring the shadow mage as he expressed concern.
"Perhaps a bit too hard, good sir."
he joked, touching the light bruise on the back of his neck. He grinned, leaning the man back on his log so that he was more comfortable. He gently, as if with the soft touch of a lover, placed his fingertips on either side of the mordecai's temples, whispering in a soft voice as shadows dwelled to pull him from his sleep.
"Come now, your dreams can't be that good."
He tsked, tugging the strands of his dreams and trying to wake him up. He didn't know why he was doing it- probably because he was handsome, and he liked handsome men- or perhaps out of kindness. Or perhaps just because he hoped it would annoy Aven.

Aven continues his vigil over the fire. "It's reassuring to hear the world hasn't yet broken your sense of narcissism, Caderin," He jokes lightly, allowing himself a small grin. He glances at Cade's use of shadow magic on Ignis, noting the man's behavior. Interesting use of shadow magic, I wonder what inter-medium he uses. "As far as kith and kin, your first obstacle may be standing on airs with those you meet. Even if you don't join us, this fire is big enough for two more, and I'm sure the shadow realm has left you lacking in regards to heat; so come, sit down."

A frown worked its way across Ignis' face as consciousness began to surface, instincts bursting into life and forcing his eyes to snap open as he groggily woke. His vision was slightly blurred, a dull ache throbbing at the base of his skull. Letting out a small grunt, he squinted at the foggy face swimming in his vision, the features familiar but not at the same time.

Then, realisation shot through him at the same time pain did, a harsh sound breaking from his lips as his right arm burned, rings of white light bursting through the sleeves of his coat as the magic within the arm breaking through the cracks in the plating. The man before him was a threat, his arm was proof enough of that, and he lunged upright without a sound, unnaturally cold hand closing around solid flesh as he forcefully pushed the man before him down, the sting of purging magic burning close

Aven's joke seemed to allow the charged atmosphere of the conversation to abate, and Caderin felt a stab of relief as the tension lessened. He laughed, in a startled way, as if he hadn't done so in a long time.
"No," he agreed, mesmerizing eyes sparkling with an odd sense of mirth as he glanced back at the shadow mage. "I remain as infatuated with myself as ever."
He said, gaze back on the slumbering man. His large frame was plenty strong enough to move the lightbringer closer to the fire, which he did; he shook his head, seeming to become much more lighthearted as he tried to push away the last of the memories and the strain of their near arguement. In that moment, it became clear that while he was a world weary man, he was still a young one. Just then, Ignis stirred, and Cade glanced down, mouth open to greet him in his waking, but a bright light made him cringe and leap back in surprise, hand instinctively going for the hilt of his sword- but it didn't make it that far. He felt a hand grasp his throat, and the momentum of the mordecai's pounce shoved him to the dirt, knocking the wind out of him. Pain exploded in his back, his weaker shoulder, his clavicle. For a moment, he lost his thoughts, going blank with surprise. His hands came up, supplicating, eyes churning their colors as senses slowly came back, air barely reaching his lungs. He reamined still besides that, pain pounding in his temples from smacking his head into the dirt from the takedown. He winced, lips twitching in a gasping grin.
"Easy....tiger,"
He forced out, the words barely coherent.

Aven's attention to the flames remains stalwart as ever, but his voice echoes from all around them, reverberating through the shadows. His tone is commanding and powerful, uncharacteristic for Aven. "Ignis, you have three seconds to let go and step back, or you'll lose the arm. There's more than one way to cure a curse mark." Aven's words hold no sympathy, carrying the deadly intent of one who has sent souls screaming to the abyss before. Looking around, Ignis and Caderin would see themselves surrounded by tendrils of shadow, all ending in a dagger-like edge. "Show me that iron will, Ignis: the power of that light is yours to command, not the other way around."

Ignis gritted his teeth, dark navy hues locked on Cade's face. The hand was like a vice around the man's throat, the slightest attempt to release it sending pain through his shoulder. At Aven's words, his head snapped up, eyes taking in the razor sharp daggers at all sides. The threat was not enough to frighten him, he had faced more dire situations in the past, but the words struck him.

Grinding his teeth together, his left hand came to close around the right wrist, a pained sound slipping from his teeth as he forced the fingers to slowly unclench, every minute movement making the arm scream in protest. The light streaming from the cracks in the plates began to slowly darken as his finger finally released enough that he could push himself back, stumbling to his feet and staggering away from the camp a small ways, hand clenched tightly around his forearm. Resting his back against a sturdy pine, he gasped, letting out a shuddering, tight breath as he watched Cade and Aven through wary eyes, now returned to their bright, electric colour.

Cade felt his pulse hammering as he gasped for air, weakening. One thing was for certain- Ignis had an iron grip. He was relieved when the mordecai's hand released him, weight atop him gone in an instant. Cade sputtered, coughing and hacking as he held his throat, where bruises were beginning to darken his tan skin. His eyes roiled, colors shifting hypnotically, pained. He managed to regain some of his senses, catching the lightbringer's movement away from the fire just so, the words of the shadow mage, the way the wary gaze of the white haired man seemed affixed with scrutiny and suspicion. His back ached, lungs wheezing from the force of having the breath smacked from them, and the strain of trying to breathe. He shifted back until he was leaning a tired shoulder into a log by the campfire, weakly bringing up his hands to show he meant no harm.
"Good takedown..." He praised dryly, wincing as he felt the back of his head where it pounded, bringing it back wet with blood from cutting himself on a rock. He frowned at the thick crimson, wiping it on his dark coat. It was unfortunate that he had been wearing his sword, for the hard material probably bruised his back in the fall- he was lucky he hadn't gotten impaled.
"I didn't mean to startle you."
His voice was thin and rough as he tried to catch his breath.

[[OOC: it's no problem, don't worry about it. Irl responsibilities come first]]

Aven finally relaxes back, removing his focus from controlling the shadows. "Are you two alright? That looked painful on both ends." The various tendrils burst into dark particles and flow systematically into Aven's shadow, leaving a peculiar scent in the area, reminiscent of raw rabbit. Stretching his arms and rolling his shoulders, the Mage lets out a small sigh. Controlling eight shadows at once was insanely taxing on his mind; it was fortunate that Ignis targeted Cade first, allowing him to remain still and concentrate. Speaking of Ingis... He sets his gaze to meet the hesitant Mordecai. "Don't tell me you're having doubts already, Ignis?" Aven raises a hand in a sort of half shrug, adopting a sarcastic tone of voice. "I expected to get at least a month out of you before you cracked..." He shoots the younger man a teasing grin.

Ignis sent a dark look Aven's way, leaning heavily against the tree as his arm pulsed painfully. Every beat of his heart sent a sharp spike of fire down the limb, a dull ache situated at the stump of his shoulder, where magic met bone. Gritting his teeth together harshly, he shot a foul glare at Cade, eyes dark and distrusting. "I'm going to assume you two know each other?" He spat, not deigning to reply to Aven's comment, preferring to get to the truth of this matter first.

His neck was throbbing dully, in time with his arm, from where Aven had struck him, a pounding ache that spread through the base of his skull to settle behind his eyes. The arse.

Cade chuckled at Aven's remark, grimacing as it brought a cough to fruition. He gingerly felt his back, waving off the light concern with his free hand and a grin.
"I'm fine- my pride hurts a little, though."
He joked, glancing at the mordecai to gauge his storming mood. Mythranys growled quietly, slimming to Caderin's side and curling up near him, like a loyal dog- though he reached up and swatted at his friend for being stupid. The fallen Prince just pushed him away with feigned annoyance. He reached to pat the Phouka, his lightless fur actually quite soft and warm; an anomaly, since things of shadow were almost always cold. Only beings that could manipulate the shadows were actually able to touch the surly fae. Undulating purple and crimson eyes finally returned to the two men, looking between them, curious and tiredly amused. When the lightbringer questioned angrily if they knew each other, glaring at Cade as if he had hung him by his breeches in a tree, The Eloquir laughed, holding his aching sides as he sent the shadow mage a wink- not really out of flirtation, but he enjoyed a good joke to lighten the mood.
"Unless I have made love to him in a drunken stupor and conveniently forgotten it, then no."
He smirked, one corner of his lips twitching.

Aven catches Cade's gesture, and after the briefest of pauses, his eyes fly wide with mock recognition, his mouth becoming a soft 'oh', before snapping his fingers with vigor. "That explains that night in Uthlyn two months ago. I was wondering where those bruises came from..." He checks Ignis' response, keeping his composure for a second flat, before cracking and letting out a long bought of laughter. "No, I've known him about as long as you, give or take a few seconds. He is, however, a fellow being of the shadows, and such matters require their own etiquette." His attention wanders to Cade and Myth. "Speaking of which, I've got a few inquiries I'd like to clear off my list: exactly what kind of being are you, for the shadows to protect you of their own volition? I've nary seen such a reaction from them before, even as a researcher of their very nature."

Ignis' filthy look was expanded to encompass both shadow mages at that, his eyes conveying just how done he was with the two of them. Letting out a soft grunt of annoyance, pain still mingled in with it, he slid down to sit at the base of the tree, distrust still radiating from him. For his own sake rather than thd mage's, he would keep his distance for now.

Caderin's eyes took on a glint of mirth, glad that most of the charge in the conversation had died down. He chuckled, low voice husky. It was both amusing and gratifying that Aven had played along with his jest, and even more so the look of disgust on Ignis' face. He lifted a hand with narrowed eyes, grinning as he pantomimed chugging a tumbler of mead.
"I apologize if I forgot our night of fiery passion- I have been known to get incredibly inebriated."
When the shadow mage cracked up, so did he, enjoying his first real moment of relative calm for days. He nodded in agreement to Aven's explanation, seconding the words. It was not often to weilders of The dark encountered one another. When the other man asked him why such entities came to his defense, he cocked his head, thinking on it with interest.
"An intriguing question. To the initial query, I will tell you that I am an Eloquir- we are a small species that resides in the little known country of the same name. As to why the shadows seem so intertwined with me... Well, my governess used to say that our deity formed us from shadows, and blended those shadows with creatures of night. Hence my fangs, and my height. Of course, that is the belief of the devout. Personally, I believe that we are connected to them, somehow. It is as if they chose to bond with us somewhere far back in our evolution, and we simply have them in our blood. We understand them. Relate to them."
Every word was true, but he didn't mention that he was the Eloquirian Prince, fallen from grace. The shadows recognized him for what he was, and when he was in danger, they often chose to come to his defense. They were now the only subjects that this Prince would ever have. He glanced away, hinting at secrets undiscovered, staring into the fire, though his lighthearted grin remained.

As Aven's laughing fit came to an end, his expression bore an intense intrigue. Seldom had he come across other shadow users, though such stands to reason in a country such as Connloath. To be honest, his only knowledge of the fairer darkness was mainly that of his own discovery, adding in a slight supplement from a few Serenian texts he'd acquired in his short fling as a nobleman. He stroked his chin thoughtfully as Cade spoke, nodding a few times, though his eyes were not fixed on the speaker, but on a small rock stained a dried crimson. "Fascinating... it's only a theory of mine, but in some instances, I've observed precarious anomalies while studying the shadows and magic's effect on them, and they seem to have a mind of their own." He puts a hand on his shadow behind him, wavering slowly in the light of the flame. "For example, you have witnessed my own shadow move of it's own accord: as a user of shadow magic myself, I cannot rule out the possibility that such an occurrence is not a result of my subconscious mind influencing my flow of magic, therefore the conclusion is uncertain," Aven's eyes hold an immeasurable lust for knowledge, and his fingers close into a fist on top of the darkness, as if attempting to grasp what is beyond his reach, "But I can't shake the feeling that there is something to them I don't yet understand. Something on a fundamental level I have not grasped."
In his intrigue, Aven pays no heed to the chance Cade was withholding information, overlooking any possibility of omission in the Eloquir's words. Propping himself upright once more, he twirls the blood splattered stone in his fingertips. "To that end, there wouldn't happen to be transformative properties in this blood of yours, would there? It would be quite disastrous if I were to become any less myself than I already am."

Ignis remained stoicly silent as the two conversed, his hand never straying far from his right forearm as he leant his head back against the tree he leaned against, left arm draped over his upraised knee, the other hanging limp at his side. Whilst most would think he was in a completely different place, from the expression on his face, the opposite was true; he was listening to the two shadow users' conversation with great interest.

Cade listened to the mage's musings with deep thought, dwelling on the words as he stroked behind the phouka's wings.
"I cannot claim to know the secrets of that realm, but to me, it seems that they do, in fact, have a certain way about them that speaks of independence. That is, a life. I have always thought of them as ageless, having witnessed the joys and agonies of eons. Whenever I walk among them, I sense a million emotions, none of which I could ever begin to understand. And Mythranys here definitely has a mind of his own. Though, I believe he was once a normal fae creature, but was twisted by shadows. He refuses to say."
He considered the man's shadow, which seemed to venture of its own accord, cocking his head like an inquisitive dog, sitting up straighter as he tried to puzzle it out. As he regarded it, a hand rubbed absently at the wound on his head.
"Perhaps, " he began, voicing a hypothesis churning among his thoughts. "Your shadow could be an extension of yourself. Like a reflection. Of maybe simply a single shade in particular that has taken a liking to you, forming itself to match you. Who can say? The machinations of such a world continue to confound me. As for the blood, I don't believe it would have an effect, ill or otherwise. But if it interests you so, you are welcome to do what you will with it. I prefer to simply feel the dark. I think that if I were to understand them better, they would not have the same appeal to me."

Aven nods thoughtfully. "That is certainly a plausible theory, Cade, especially considering-" He stops himself, taking a pause. That isn't something he should reveal just yet, even in the case that Cade chooses to align himself with the cause. The existence of dark matter is highly volatile, and the mere knowledge of it draws the force close. No, it was not knowledge he should share offhand. A few moments pass in thought without Aven's realization, and he hastily finishes his sentence. "-Past occurrences." Aven curses his inadequacy; his indecision was too great, leaving him unable to play the pause off as a simple slip of the mind.

Huffing out a breath as the two continued to discuss their use of the shadows, Ignis settled himself more comfortably against the tree and let his eyes fall shut, figuring he might as well catch some shut eye. The day had been strange that was for sure, but his arm would react if either kf the shadow users camd anywhere near him, so he was perfectly safe to go to sleep.

Caderin raises an eyebrow at the pause in the shadow mage's usually assured speech, wondering as to its meaning. But he does not mention it, shrugging his broad shoulders with a wince. All the activity of getting knocked down and, before, running through the shadow realm had excited the injury on his left shoulder, which extended over his collarbone and chest on that side. He brought up a hand to massage the scarred and knotted tissue through the fabric of his coat, the other arm still crossed over. He let his head fall back against the log, observing the mordecai fall asleep beneath his avid crimson and purple gaze. It had been a night of mystery and adventure and talks of revolution, and Cade was bemused how to react. His tangled mop of shaggy hair rustled in the breeze, and he impatiently ran his fingers through its softness, scrubbing his palm over his jaw. He shook his head, returning his regard to Aven with a lopsided smile.
"Who knows the secrets the darkness holds? At any rate, the night is young- though action filled, apparently. It seems your friend has slipped into the arms of sleep. What subject do you suggest we use to wile away the time? I'm a semi-open book,"
He joked quietly, the Phouka at his side releasing a sound that was suspiciously reminiscent of a purr.

Aven breathes a sigh of relief in his mind, thanking his luck Cade didn't press the matter. He tapped his fingers rhythmically on the ground beside him, a relaxed expression covering his features. "Well, then, may I turn to the page where your little friend enters the story? That's certainly no ordinary companion you've got there." He snaps his fingers, and the darkness behind him morphs into a cushion, which he promptly rests an elbow on, allowing his head to loll onto his fist.

The Fallen Prince chuckled, patting the Phouka between his ears.
"Ah, one of my favorite stories."
He said in devilish delight. Mythranys, sensing humiliation, snarled and rolled over to claw savagely at Cade's calloused hand. The Eloquir just grinned, seemingly used to the ruthless fae's attacks.
"Dontcha dare!"
Myth hissed, sounding irate. Cade just imprisoned him in his arms, one hand bleeding from the razored claw marks on its back. He laughed, diving into the tale with amusement.
"There I was," he began dramatically, to annoy the struggling Phouka, "just wandering through Serendipity. I wanted to travel to the Colony Valley- dragons have always fascinated me. But I felt this odd pull, and I decided to follow it. I figured, 'what the hell?' So, it took me nearly half an hour, but I ventured into this little clearing, where, lo and behold, I come upon the strangest sight Olin all my years."
He lifted a hand to illustrate the scene, eyes alight with mirth.
"Hanging by his tail in a trap is this little bugger, surrounded by a tribe of Spriggans." he showed their small size with his thumb and forefinger as Myth yowled in protest. " They're all smacking him with these sticks, and he's getting poked in the eyes, flailing around like a fish on a hook. Theyd rigged up this little sapling, and he's dangling from it. I have never seen a more comical situation in my whole life. I charge in, kicking the little bastards away in five seconds. Don't know what they planned on doing with him, but I saved him from something."
He snickered as the fae in question growled, biting at his constricting arms in shame at being caught by the pint sized oppressors. Cade smirked at Aven, shrugging his shoulders.
"I'm sure now that it was my connection to the shadows that led me to the surly little crank, but he's my closest friend."

Aven gives a hearty bought of laughter as he plays the scene through his head. "Not what I expected, to be sure! It must be nice having a loyal companion such as that, I confess that I'm jealous. The world becomes quite lonely after so long a time alone, though by your eyes, I can tel you're no stranger to the concept." He leans on his side. "So, do you have a trade, then? The evening marched on as the two shadow weilders conversed, the dawn's warmth stretching out to caress the chilled lands. Above the campsite, the forest burst into life, nature filling the void of silence. Ignis woke with a start, wrenched from troubled slumer by a mkrage long forgotten. Sighing, the young Mordecai sat up, rubbing his arm absently as he looked around the clearing for his "companions".

Cade smiled his fanged smile, crookedly grinning as he let the Phouka free. The fae hissed and disappeared in a puff of shadowsmoke, reforming yards away, beginning to straighten his unseeable fur like a moody cat. The Prince just chuckled, looking to Aven as he spoke, asking curious questions. His shifting eyes were bright and intent, realaxed in their conversation.
"The world has left me to live on my own more than once, it's true. There are times when I..."
Cade trailed off, looking into the night with a storm brewing on his face. A hurricane of sadness, pain. But he blinked, and it was gone, the smile returning.
"Ah, but that is life, is it not? You come into it alone, and you go out of it alone."
His attempt at lightening the mood was half hearted, but luckily the shadow mage still had questions.
"I mostly dabble in mercenary work when I have the time or the inclination, but the land does offer me what I need in the meantime. I am constantly thankful for my abilities, for when I am desperately hungry..." His hand morphed into a huge black paw, then into a bird's taloned foot, then back into a normal hand as he flashed his fangs for him to see. "...I can throw the game a little." He finished.

Dawn was breaking ever so slowly over their heads, and the Eloquir lifted his head to watch the lights and colors dance on the horizon, enthralled by the simplistic beauty of the natural occurence. He glanced at the others to comment, but saw that the lightbringer was coming into wakefulness. He smiled, somewhat wolfishly in a teasing way, but his eyes were sincere as they usually were.
"Hail, sir Ignis. I trust your sleep was refreshing?"

His eyes narrowed at the sight of the Eloquir, distrust and wariness coming to the forefront of his expression as he stiffened, body tense and coiled for action in a matter of seconds, "You're still here, huh?" He muttered, hostility in his tone, "Joining the 'cause' then, are you?"

Pushing himself to his feet, the Mordecai stretched out his right arm, wincing slightly as the muscles of his flesh shoulder ached dully, the pain an old friend to him at this point. Glancing around the clearing, Ignis huffed slightly at the dead embers of last night's fire, bending down to retrieve Harbinger from where it had laid all night, while casting his gaze abiut for Aven.
