Kovarst skulked around in the form of a small white fox, his entire body tensed as if waiting for a blow. A stranger had come to this place in the dead of night, much like himself – and if Kovarst himself was any indication, people who did so weren't to be trusted. Because they could be shapeshifters!

Or he could just be another petty thief. At any rate, some caution was to be exercised around this newcomer.

Then the stranger threw a fit, prompting Kovarst to cock his head. What was it that this man was looking for? Could he...perhaps not read? And if this man couldn't read, why come to a library of all places?

Kovarst scurried behind a bookshelf – in the process, making more noise than he intended to. Oops. Anyone with keen senses would've picked that one up for sure. Well – it wasn't anything he couldn't muscle his way out of.

Kovarst blinked. "I...that's not a normal reaction to a dragon," he said, as he crouched down to level his head with the slave girl's. "Let alone one that explicitly and specifically threatened you with...you know what, never mind."

At an impasse as to what to do, Kovarst scratched his head with his claw. "So...are you going to let me out now or what?" he said. "Because if you don't, things could get pretty ugly for you." All empty threats, of course. Kovarst wouldn't dare harm a poor little slave girl; slaves were powerless beings, and harming them wouldn't sit well with him.

At least, not if they were actively threatening him, of course.

"I'm so glad you asked me that question."

Kovarst reared his head and grew suddenly, his white fur turning into white scales and his fox's eyes turning large and slitted – in a matter of seconds, he was back in full dragon form. With a sneer that bared razor-sharp fangs, he looked down on the poor librarian – he hoped that she was at least having second thoughts about keeping him inside.

"Are you starting to regret locking me up, little girl?" he said, his voice full of draconic hubris. "If I were a little human like yourself, I'd start questioning my recent decisions right about now."

Hasina sighed. Against her better judgment, she had the urge to help this poor girl – call it recompense for having subjected said poor girl to such a grisly sight. It wasn't every day that one saw something so brutal in front of one's face, after all. Who knew, maybe that'd give her some points with whatever powers there were.

Except if that power was Zahhakis. Quite frankly, fuck Zahhakis.

"Alright, I'll help you round up your sheep," she said, as she closed her eyes and grimaced. "But you must promise to pretend that you never saw me, alright? And that this whole ordeal never happened. Else..."

Hasina paused. Or else what? It wasn't like she was going to kill the other girl for the sake of silencing.

"...Else we'll both be in really big trouble. I assume you understand why, being a mage yourself," she said, with a tsk. "But again, I will help you."

Kovarst growled. "Well, if you don't want to be hurt, then you'd better let me out of this library. And if you're not the one in charge of my fate or whatever, then direct me to whoever is so I can convince them to let me out. Or tear them a new one; depends on my mood."

Then he shook himself. "No, it doesn't hurt to talk in this form. It's a skill I've gotten used to in my time as a wizard," he said, with his best approximation of a smile. "Why would it hurt, anyway? That seems a bit weird."

"Anyway, let me out now. Or tell your boss to do so, I don't care."

Kovarst stepped back. Oh boy, the cat was scared. In retrospect, Kovarst should've seen this outcome coming – he felt stupid that he didn't. Not sure how to act in this situation, he decided to take the path of least resistance. "Hey there, don't worry – I won't harm you," he said, in as measured a voice as he could given his present circumstances.

"If I wanted to hurt you, I would've done so already, right? Or I would've simply left you up there. Turning back into my true form was really the only way I could've saved you!" Kovarst sighed; why was he even talking to the cat? It wasn't like the cat was intelligent enough to understand him!

Maybe he was just bored out of his mind.

"They had bounties on their heads. Hunting bounties is how I make my living, and sometimes that involves bloodshed. It was unlikely that they'd have surrendered peacefully." Hasina cracked an awkward smile – even if they had decided to surrender, killing them was probably the more expedient means of dispatching them.

"I...yeah, so that's why I killed them. Need help or are you going to be okay on your own? Or - well, with that thing." Hasina stepped forward, uncertain as to what to do in this situation. "And by the way, you shouldn't tell anyone how I killed them. In this part of the world, well...us mages aren't looked upon kindly."

"Hoo, yeah. I remember the first time I saw someone die." Hasina folded her arms underneath her breasts, then waited for the other girl to finish throwing up. "I remember the first time I made someone die, too. Those were not pleasant memories."

Could Hasina be more tactful in a situation like this? Probably, but she didn't know how to act in this situation at all. It had been so long since her hands weren't stained with blood that she'd forgotten how viscerally repulsing the deaths of others seemed to her fellow human beings.

Once the other girl was through, Hasina cleared her throat. "So, uh...are you going to be okay on your own?"

"Yeah, it's fine." Kovarst shrugged with his wings. "I don't get company like this very often, anyway. You're safe with me around – well, really, we're both safer with each other around," he said, remembering her diatribe about dragon poachers. Yeesh, he wouldn't want to come across one of those guys!

Not that he was particularly scared or anything, it was just...gah. He needed to keep things under control, and this seemed like the best way to do so!

"Feel free to rest whenever. I'll nod off myself, if that's alright with you." Kovarst smiled. "I need to get rest – it's been a surprisingly long day for me, too." Especially after that story he'd just told her! What a day.

Luckily for the cat, help was on its way. After a few minutes of waiting to see if the coast was clear of dogs, Kovarst trotted out in fox form. "Hey, do you need help getting down?" he said, as he aimed his gaze upwards – he'd clearly just spoken human speech, too. Never mind that it was extremely unlikely, albeit not impossible, that the cat could understand him.

"Eh, it looks like you do. Give me a sec."

That was all the warning Kovarst gave the cat before he shifted fully into a dragon, swooped up, picked her with one of his talons, and then set her on the ground gently. "There we go!" he said, utterly unconcerned as to how his true form might shock her.

Just before the bandits could close in on Tessa, a bolt of hellfire careened into one of their heads and blasted it clean off. Before the two remaining could recoup themselves, a shadowy figure danced between one of them and slit his throat with a single fluid motion. The last dropped his weapon and started to run – only for the figure to barrel at him at inhuman speed, tackle him, and run his head through with a blade.

Once she was done, Hasina stood up and dusted herself. Over in this part of the world, mages were frowned upon, but that didn't deter her. Anyway, she could make it look like she'd executed the three using mundane means.

"Hey there. Are you okay?" she said, as she turned to Tessa. "Sorry you had to see that; I had business with these folks."

"...Of course I can talk. I talked earlier, didn't I?" said Kovarst, with a blink. "Although if you're referring to my ability to talk in this form specifically...well, that's something of a skill of mine, yes. It's not the only form I can assume, either."

"Anyway, you're going to let me out of here and leave me alone, or you're going to be in for a really nasty surprise." Despite his size, Kovarst tried his best to glower down at the woman. "Trust me when I say that I've killed people before, and this is the cuddliest you'll ever see me."

"Probably the prudent thing to do," said Kovarst, somewhat half-heartedly. He didn't really want to put in too much effort into looking reluctant, as he found the notion boring. Besides, whatever happened to Kiara was really none of his business. And again, he wasn't willing to risk life and limb for a total stranger!

He had too many limbs for that. Wings were limbs, right?

Despite himself, Kovarst chuckled. "Well, if you really want to hear the story," he said, before launching into a story about one especially wild night at university. As he did so, he remembered the smell of burnt hair; the important thing was that nobody was seriously hurt, physically or psychologically.

Kovarst sighed. "Well, that's relieving to hear. Glad you didn't insist on it, honestly – I wasn't sure if I'd have really gone through with it," he said, with a laugh. "I'm glad that I could at least provide some emotional support for you while you were on your way, though. Sorry that we couldn't have known each other better."

That was when he stretched himself out and yawned. "I'm getting sleepy," he said. "But I know how to sleep with one eye open, so don't try anything funny – although I don't expect you to do so, mind. It's just something I do on principle, so don't take it against you."

Physical Description

Aspect of Gorgon by Willian Murai

Hasina is a slender, shapely Essyrni woman who looks younger than her thirty-four years of age. She has the dark skin, full lips, and wide eyes characteristic of Essyrni women, and keeps her dark brown hair into long, thick braids.

Hasina's typical outfit consists of of a faded purple shawl over a backless white blouse, a thin, slitted gray skirt, and simple leather sandals.

Personality

Hasina lives life as lightly and freely as possible. Consequences are just problems for her future self, and she does not envy that woman – she indulges in wine, dance, and the company of beautiful young individuals as much as she can. In particular, she is a notoriously poor spender and reckless gambler, which has gotten her into her fair share of trouble.

Underneath this hedonistic exterior is a broken woman who deeply resents her harsh, isolated, and heavily religious upbringing. Although she initially only hated her family of demon worshipers, Hasina learned to feel the exact same way towards any zealot of any faith. And in general, she cannot stand those with rigid modes of thinking.

Hasina's normally carefree disposition changes remarkably when matters concern her daughter Katyasa. Hasina is remarkably protective of her daughter, and does everything she can for Katyasa's sake – she may regret this parenting style in the future, but that's just a problem for her future self.

Magic

By virtue of possessing Zahhakis's blood, Hasina can call upon some of the dread aspects of her ancestor – albeit in a sharply limited form.

Aspect of Dread – With the Aspect of Dread, Hasina can assume the visage of her demonic ancestor to induce the fear of death into up to ten perceived targets within a sixty-foot radius. This does not work on artificial creatures or creatures that do not possess an innate fear of death.

Aspect of Shadow – With the Aspect of Shadow, Hasina can assume a black smoke-like form. In this form, she is intangible and difficult to see in darkness or low light. She cannot attack or manifest any of the other Aspects while in this form, and must rematerialize in a process that takes about six seconds.

Aspect of Carnage – With the Aspect of Carnage, Hasina can conjure two shadowy blades in her hands at will almost instantaneously. These blades disappear when they are not in contact with her.

Aspect of Brutality – With the Aspect of Brutality, Hasina can amplify her strength, speed, and durability with her natural magical reserves. The greater the increase, the more magic she needs to expend.

Aspect of Damnation – With the Aspect of Damnation, Hasina can conjure blasts of hellfire, either in a single-target line or in a cone. The narrower the blast, the greater the force.

Katyasa does not possess any magical abilities yet.

Abilities

Assassination Skills – Hasina is an expert at stealth and subterfuge, and is knowledgeable of the use of various poisons.

Combat Conditioning – Hasina is a master of every weapon common in Essyrn. She has also mastered various forms of unarmed combat.

Katyasa is by all respects a regular nine-year-old girl.

Relationships

TBD.

History

Nestled deep in the Moraki Desert is a temple dedicated to the great demon Zahhakis, who once took human form and mated with a woman to create demon-blooded sorcerer descendants. These demon-blooded descendants would act as Zahhakis's agents in the mortal realm, carrying out dark rites and assassinations for their ancestor. They propagated themselves for generations by seducing outsiders into mating with them, then siring a child with which they would abscond.

Many generations after their ancestor first took human form, the ir'Zahhakis – as they became known – stopped receiving communications from their ancestor and master. Without their demonic god to guide them, the Zahhakis eventually became thieves and assassins for hire, although some still kept the faith and all continued their traditions of propagation and subsequent kidnapping.

It was in this age of uncertainty that Hasina was born, the union of an ir'Zahhakis mother and a wealthy Essyrni merchant. Trained since birth to be a natural assassin and warrior-mage, Hasina endured torturous alchemical conditioning and harsh training to become a living weapon. All of this, of course, was in service to her clan – and none of it was her choice. She was destined to lead this life from the day she was born.

Of course, Hasina hated this rigid upbringing. Every night for as long as she could remember, she dreamed of escaping from her family and its traditions. So at eighteen, while on an assignment, she abandoned her cousins and never came back.

Hasina's life has been an adventuress's life since then. She made significant sums of money adventuring and wasted said sums just as quickly – this has created a trail of creditors who are currently on her tail. She made many friends and connections throughout Le'ranna, but never settled down for more than half a year. Well, almost never.

Two years after leaving her family, Hasina found herself with child. No-one knows who the true father is, not even Hasina herself; there were roughly four strapping young male candidates, and the relevant instances were driven entirely by loveless desire. All she knows is that the father gave their daughter Katyasa strong Adelan features. It isn't relevant to her, anyway.

Hasina and Katyasa now flit from place to place, never staying so far – for fear of the other ir'Zahhakis and the many creditors Hasina has managed to anger. Of course, Hasina isn't giving up her lifestyle any time soon...

"Ever since I left school. I studied in quite the reputable university, did you know that?" Kovarst snorted. "Of course, no-one knew of my true nature there. Well, okay, maybe there were some instances where...you know, that probably doesn't bear repeating in present company," he said, as he suddenly remembered he was in a woman's company.

Kovarst snapped. "Anyway, you seemed distraught at losing your companion earlier. Do you have a plan of action for getting him back? I'd help, but..." That was a bold-faced lie. He had no plans of meddling in the affairs of experienced dragon wranglers. But hey, what she didn't know wouldn't hurt her.

Kovarst stopped just short of being flattened – instinctively, he turned around and growled, still in his fox form. "Do you know what I really am, human? I could tear you limb from limb just for trying that," he said, baring his fangs. It was largely an empty threat, but she didn't know that.

Admittedly, it wasn't a very effective threat. He wasn't on the level of menace he exuded as a dragon quite yet, but if this slave woman pushed it, that would soon change. It was a shame what would happen to all these poor books, though, but that was a small price to pay for his life.

"I'm sure they are, but I haven't met a human I couldn't outsmart yet. Er, no offense." Kovarst smiled, despite present company. "Most people of ill intent I've run into aren't all that bright – they wouldn't know how to deal with a dragon if one clawed their face off. Which has, by the way, actually happened in my case."

Kovarst realized that he'd just alluded to having killed a human rather blithely – which, for some reason, offput quite a few other humans. He gulped. "To be clear, it was all in self-defense! That human was a direct and immediate threat to my person. Completely legitimate ethically, if you ask me."

...Why hadn't he been this intimidating when he'd been trying to be earlier?
