Kaya was ex-ci-ted! It was the biggest Kaadir event of the year! Several years! After all, the great Essryni Kaadir Exposition only took place every ten years. And to think, she was getting to go! This was, of course, very exciting for any Awali. Especially from her tribe! All Awali, of course, were famed for their Kaadir. Much better than any Essryni breeders! But Kaya's tribe had been particularly successful. And not only were they showing their Kaadir! But they were given the chance to show their rarer and more prestigious prize - the Sirrush! Only the Awali bred the rare Sirrush, and they had in their tribe the most famous Sirrush breeder of them all: her aunt Kheema.

At least that as, the most famous Sirrush breeder for now!

Kaya fully intended to surpass her aunt! After all, she was the youngest Awali to ever be entrusted with a mating Sirrush family! And she'd successfully raised two clutches already! Before she even had twenty years! This was unheard of. No one had done it before - not even Kheema! - except Kaya.

Of her Sirrush, only Myshhussu was here. It would be too risky to bring all the Sirrush - and too stressful for the dragon-like creatures. Plus the males made for a more impressive show, since they could speak in human tongues. And Myshhussu could even speak Common! She couldn't wait to show him off! But now Myshhussu was 'stabled;' their time in the exposition would come later. So for now Kaya had some time to herself to wander amongst the Kaadir and their trainers and breeders. Knowing that not only did her tribe have the Sirrush, but that they had far superior Kaadir, Kaya was feeling pretty confident!

Perhaps she was even feeling overconfident. Because when she saw a female Kaadir trainer running her dragons through a practice course - the real competition would come later (Kaya wasn't participating, but one of her cousins was!) - Kaya grinned and called to the trainer. "Is that all you've got? I think my goatherding dog could run that course!"

Rhindeer

This was it.

This was the opportunity of a lifetime. Or, not quite that extreme; this would be Eta's third time participating in the event, but only her second time actively participating. The first time didn't really count, since she'd been nine when she shyly accompanied her parents back then. The second time she had been young, just nineteen, when she showed her own kaadir. She hadn't won much beyond honorable mentions and recognition, but that hadn't been half bad for a first time!

She'd grown more experienced since then, and was quite proud of her last few clutches. She'd selected the best of them all to bring here--the brightest colors, the most prestigious pedigrees, the most intelligent and strong, the finest temperaments, the ones she felt were the greatest representation of breed standards. Sunshine was her crown jewel, her favorite of the kaadir she'd raised for his gentle demeanor, bright yellow scales that shone like topaz, strong, sleek build, and keen intelligence. She was certain she could win something with him alone! He deserved it!

It was Sunshine she was currently riding through the practice course, directing him with light nudges with her heels, tugs on the reins, and spoken commands. He followed them all with ease and took the hurdles gracefully, wound through the poles with all the fluidity of a snake, and had just crossed the finish line when a voice called out--

...Seriously?

Eta's eyebrow twitched in irritation and she wheeled Sunshine around and looked about to find the source.

Wasn't hard to find. The curly-haired girl was the only one avidly watching.

Her scowl deepened, and she nudged Sunshine into a walk that brought her to the edge of the fence. "Is that what you brought to show, then? Your dog? That's adorable, but I think you've come to the wrong event."

If the kaadir trainer's scowling made any impression at all on Kaya, it didn't show. She just stood there, the same self-assured stance, the same over-confident grin on her face. She watched impassively - as though Very Unimpressed! - as the kaadir and trainer approached. She actually was quite interested in kaadir, their tribe must have triple the amount of dragons as they did Sirrush, but she definitely wasn't going to show it now!

"Oh no, I brought something else to the show," she answered brightly, grinning, almost as though she hadn't understood the sarcasm behind the scowling woman's words. "I left the dog behind to look after the goats. Looks like you forgot to do the same." Really, Kaya wasn't normally so rude. But she was so stoked! And excited! And full of stoked excitement! Sure, she knew she was being rude, but look how scowly and riled the woman was! A bit of healthy competition was... healthy, right? She nodded to Sunshine. "So what's your lizard's name then?"

Rhindeer

DID SHE JUST--

DID SHE JUST CALL SUNSHINE A DOG?!

Right in front of his face, too! Where he could hear it! And then she called him lizard!

Eta gasped and clapped her hands over Sunshine's little ear holes, her eyes narrowing to a venomous glare. "You watch your mouth, girly!" she snapped. "Sunshine eats bigger things than you for breakfast! You'd be but a snack." And then she swept her eyes over the girl and gave a her best derisive sniff.

"Though he'd likely choke on the bones. There's no meat."

Kaya's mouth dropped open, caught between a stifled laugh and a grin.

Because, well...

SUNSHINE?!

Her frozen expression of stunned delight broke into a guffaw. Her brown, turquoise-rimmed turned to the kaadir. And ignoring its trainer and rider, she addressed the dragon directly, "Did you hear what she called you? 'Sunshine?' Oh man, you gotta be em-bar-rassed! You oughta eat her just for that!"

She shook her head, curls bouncing in the motion, "Sunshine!" she laughed to herself. "Oh man."

Rhindeer

Eta's cheeks burned with a combination of embarrassment and anger as the little brat went and mocked his name! Her hands stiffened on his reins, and she sucked in a breath through her teeth.

"It's a good name!" she snapped, for lack of having a better comeback as her mind went blank with shame. Argh! That always happened! She'd come up with something good ten minutes later when it was no longer relevant, she just knew it! "It suits him! For his sunny scales and disposition and...and...shut up! Don't you have somewhere else to be?! Anywhere else?!"

"'Disposition!'"

Kaya was actually doubled over in half-silent laughter now. Tears were literally squeezing their way out of her eyes. Sunshine! For his sunny disposition! It was too much! She hoped that if she had given any such name to Mysshusu - not that she had named him, obviously! - she hoped that he would eat her! She'd deserve it! Sunshine!

It took Kaya a loooooong time to pull herself together again. When she finally straightened herself back up, she grinned broadly at Eta, a few giggles still rumbling in her ribs. "What're your other ones called? Snowdrop and Rainbow and Rosebud?"

Rhindeer

"No!" Eta snapped out--just a little too quickly and a little too defensively. Her cheeks heated all the more and she grit her teeth until they ground together, hating that she was taking this from the little shit--and that it was actually getting to her! Argh! Why did she care?!

"No, not...not that. They're--look, you little runt, it's none of your damned business, alright?!" she growled, still lacking that comeback! Why could she never think of a good one in the moment? Why couldn't she be one of those people that always had some sassy retort prepared for every situation? Why didn't her mind work that fast? Nope, instead she had to get all flustered, which only made her more frustrated, and which was all the more frustrating because this brat, clearly, was one of those snappy comeback people!

"I don't have time for this shit and I certainly don't owe you any explanations!" She waved her hand dismissively. "Why don't you run off and play with your dolls and leave us adults to do the real work."

There. Better. That was...almost acceptable, if wholly unoriginal.

"Alright, alright," Kaya conceded to Eta's grumpy outbursts. Though it wasn't clear if she'd run out of clever things to say to the Kaadir trainer, or if she was just laughing too much to get anything else out! In fact, Kaya was still so overtaken - shaking! - with laughter, that it took her a moment to do anything.

"Okay, okay, I'm going, Miss Grumpy Guss," he said, wiping tears from her eyes. Unlike Eta, Kaya wasn't keeping tags on 'who got in the last jab.' The thought hadn't even occurred to her. So she didn't worry about not saying anything more 'clever' than 'Miss Grumpy Guss.' She started to totter away, still laughing, but paused to throw Eta a broad, confident grin over her shoulder, laughter finally mostly out of her voice, "But if you want to see something with more than just a 'sunny disposition,' I exhibition my work at two, near the palm gardens. If, you know," she started laughing again, "you get sick of your 'grown up' work."

Then off Kaya went, ribs still shaking with laughter.

When the time she'd told Eta was rolling around, Kaya was nearly tripping over herself with excitement. And another feeling that she couldn't identify - because she didn't want to admit it - that was actually nervousness. It wasn't just that this was her first show, but this was the first year they had been invited to show Sirrush alongside the Kaadir. As though a Kaadir could compare to a Sirrush! Myshhusu looked his best, though. The golden-scaled Sirrush stood a little taller than a horse at the shoulder with a powerful, sinewy body, eagle-taloned feet, a swishing lion-like tail, and a long, graceful neck with a serpentine head. The creature had both plain, curving horns coming from the back of its head and, more precious, a unicorn-like horn from its forehead. And, like a unicorn, that's where its magic lay. Myshhusu's golden eyes were bright and intelligent, and blinked at Kaya. Whereas the Awali was getting increasingly active in her excitementnervousness, the Sirrush was utterly serene.

"Alright, I suppose you're looking good enough," Kaya said to the creature, even though she thought he looked fabulous. They both knew it.

And better yet.

From behind Myshhusu, another Sirrush stepped out into the palm garden. This one was smaller, half the size of the first; still a juvenile. It looked almost identical in many ways, save its size and its scales, which were a shimmering opal. The bigger difference between the two, however, more obvious than the color and the size, was that this Sirrush had wings. Pearly white and opalescent like its scales, it was the only winged Sirrush at the exhibition. And Kaya had bread him. This was Pyhhron. Myshhusu's son, from Kaya's first round of hatchlings. Winged Sirrush were extremely rare, a recessive trait that could hide in a blood line for generations. And Kaya had bred the first they'd seen in years! Even her aunt Kheema, her tribe's most famous breeder of Sirrush and Kaadir, had never bred a winged Sirrush.

And now was Kaya's time to show him off!
