The vaulted cave was dazzling. Carved initially by earth and water, it had subsequently been embellished by the dragons and their human riders. Columns of stalagmites and stalactites stretched across the large, gaping chamber as though they were intentional supports. The walls glittered with crystals. And the forms of dragons and men had been carved into the glistening marble. The cave had to look impressive, it had a very important role for the people and dragons of Adela: it held the eggs of dragons that would take riders.

There were three eggs in the chamber now. They were set into a nest woven out of gold and silver and gems and other things that dragons loved and men coveted. Steam channeled from deep within the mountain billowed around the eggs, keeping them warm and incubating while the mother dragon was away. The eggs were larger than a human head and each was different from the other. One was a deep, inky black with an oil-slick sheen on it that glistened in the dragonfire that lit the chamber. The second was a deep, emerald green. And the last was a pearly white-gold. Each was more beautiful than any gem.

Each was observed by the small, black eyes of a yellow-thrated marten, perched on the edge of the nest and gazing down at the three jewels. Each beautiful. Each invaluable. Who could put a price on such a rare and beautiful - and powerful - gem?

Well, Flitch would see about that.

This was, monetarily and risk-wise, the biggest job Flitch had taken on. If she'd worked with someone else, they could have looted all three eggs, but Flitch didn't want to share this job. She rarely wanted to share her big jobs. It had, in a way, been easy enough to get in. Though security was high on this chamber, the intruders they were expecting were humans, other dragons, or other similarly large creatures. Penetrating such defenses as a marten, able to fit in and through passages the guards would never think they needed to keep an eye on, had not been particularly challenging. Though Flitch had made a few wrong turns and it had taken her awhile to successfully find this chamber.

And now she was in. It was just a matter of getting out.

She'd waited in the shadows for the mother dragon to leave and Flitch knew that time was of the essence now. But something made her pause. The grandeur of it all was impressive and... reminiscent. With a hollow pang, images of her youth as a daughter of the Actaeon Czar's court. And, after he fell and she fled, this place brought to mind the solemn and august years of solitude, held and worshipped as a goddess. It hadn't been quite as opulent as this, but... The marten shook. That was a different life. That life was over. She'd left it.

The marten leapt down to the stone floor of the cave, and when it landed, the marten was replaced by a scruffy-looking woman dressed in worn, high brown leather boots, form-fitting trousers, and a similarly dusty and worn brown leather jacket over a plain cotton shirt. She produced from inside the jacket a silk-lined bag. She paused for just a moment over the eggs in a moment of indecision before slipping the bag over the emerald eggs. She lifted it carefully, then slung the bag over her shoulder.

Time to make her escape.

"What the FUCK do you think you're doing?!"

The voice was booming, echoing powerfully off the walls of the chamber, and at its entrance, wings unfurled to make her look even bigger, stood a silver dragon with near-iridescent scales. She wasn't the largest dragon by far, not compared to other dragons, but to a human she was still massive at fifty feet long with deep blue horns that curled like a ram's.

And she had her large, knife-like teeth bared in a snarl as she stared at the thief with slitted silver eyes.

A growl rumbled deep in her throat, her tail flicking like an agitated cat, and she snapped her wings closed as she began to stalk forward, her movements lithe and almost serpentine. "You have until I reach you to put that egg back and explain yourself before I rip your fucking face off."

Flitch was more than half way across the chamber to the narrow passageway she planned to make her escape through when the dragon's voice bellowed through the chamber.

The thief spun on her heels to face the dragon. She sized it quickly up, then gave a broad, toothy grin. "Aw, what, this face?" she asked, shaggy bangs flopping over her bright brown eyes. "Shit, I never liked this face, anyway. Don't know what yeh'll do with it, though. Won't fit over that tooth gob of yers."

Flitch was backing up all the time as she talked back to the dragon. The passageway was just large enough for Flitch to squeeze through; and if it got too tight, she could always change form. Eggs could roll if nothing else, after all! But it was definitely too tight for a dragon!

The thief appreciated the dragon's bluster, though. Especially somewhere like this! Such an austere and opulent place... guarded by a beast with such foul language and rude behavior! She imagined dragons out to be more, well, grandiose or something.

"What're you, then?" she asked pointedly - always better to keep talking! "The guard dog?"

Rhindeer

Tanith's lips curled back, wet fangs gleaming. The woman was supposed to be cowering in fear and pissing herself right now! Not sassing her! Face-ripping was terrifying, dammit! She was terrifying!

"Dog? Fuck you. I'm a goddamned nightmare. What're you? A misshapen monkey?" she hissed, though inwardly she was bristling at the insult. She already hated this job. There were few things duller than watching eggs sit around being eggs. She could be off knocking in skulls or training incompetent little human soldiers right now, but instead she got chosen to play guardian for the day. She supposed she should thank the thief, though.

This did make her day significantly more interesting!

Her claws clacked on the floor as she stalked ever closer. "Now put the egg down. I will eat you! I'll only give you this final chance. You won't get another!"

“‘Mishappen monkey?’ Jeeeeeze,” Flitch complained, giving an exaggerated roll of her eyes as she backed closer and closer to her escape route, “you gotta work on your trash-talk, puppy. Talk about a nightmare. How’d yeh get landed with this job, too dull fer any of the other’ns?”

Flitch shook her head, flopping her bangs in front of her eyes, and shook her head to brush them aside. She was just feet away from her escape now. It was almost too easy!

“Well,” she said congenially with a wide, shit-eating grin, “fun as it is gabbin’ with yeh, fang face, Junior here and I got places t’be. Sorry to spoil yer dinner. Probably'd just choke on me, anyway!" Flitch gave a quick wave goodbye and added, "Work on that act of yers. Then you’ll be sure t’scare the pants off the next wily thief t’sneak in here! Toodle-loo for now!”

With that, Flitch ducked into the craggy opening of the tunnel. And, even if the dragon was outside, once she had her back to it, she ran.

Rhindeer

Tanith caught the thief's intent a split second before she, well...split. As soon as the thief made to duck into the tunnel, Tanith let out a roar and lurched forward, teeth snapping, but she was too late, and her tough snout just collided with the wall instead. It was too small an opening to fit her face through, so instead she snarled and hissed and clawed at it for a second, trying to reach a claw through--

And then she realized, wait. Duh.

She could make herself smaller!

Mentally facepalming, Tanith transformed, and in a blink she had gone from shining, silver dragon to naked human. Without a thought, she threw herself through the opening and charged after the thief, hissing in irritation because this form, while convenient at times, was also irritating.

Running, for example, was especially annoying and uncomfortable.

"Goddammit! I swear to every god I'm gonna break your face when I catch you!" she shouted. "Then all your lousy thieving fingers! Then I'll tear apart your--ow, shitfucking motherfucker!"

She stumbled and bounced a few steps, then reached down and pulled out a small, stabby rock that had decided to lodge itself in her foot. ARGH! Why couldn't humans have scales?! She chucked the rock aside. "It'll be really bad for you if you don't give up now!"

Flitch was already running at a dead sprint when she heard - fuck! - footsteps thundering after her. She should have seen that coming! After all, here she was in human form! Didn't mean she was supposed to know that fucking all dragons could do it! Picking up her pace as much as she could down the winding tunnel in the rock, Flitch almost passed up the perfect opportunity. To her right was a second, much smaller fissure in the rock of the mountain. Too small for a human to pass through, but just wide enough for the egg.

Flitch would just have to hope that the dragon couldn't take any other forms!

She gave the egg an unceremonious shove into the crack before risking one glance over her shoulder. Shit. She could already see the dragon in the furthest bend in the crack! Well, here it goes! And replacing the woman was a black-and-gold furred marten, which slipped easily into the tunnel. Rolling the egg in this form wasn't as easy, but she'd just have to do it! And hope that if this were the fire-breathing sort of dragon, she couldn't breathe fire quite so far!

Little did Flitch know that, while the first tunnel was heading towards a discreet exit in the forest below the mountain, the one she was in now led to an open, bare cliff face some hundreds of feet above the ground!

Rhindeer

What the?! She could shapeshift?

Tanith didn't know why that was so shocking to her, considering she could shapeshift, but how was she to know that this "human" could do it, too?! With a snarled, "DON'T YOU FUCKING DARE!" she dove after the marten, throwing her body at the fissure with a painful thud that would surely leave bruises--just as the creature slipped through the hole.

With another snarled curse, she thrust her hand into the hole, fingers just brushing fur, and jammed her arm as far up it as she could reach, but the creature was fast and was already in too far for her to grab. Hissing in frustration, Tanith leaned down to peer into the hole with one eye. She could just make out the little beast.

"Come out now!" she growled, and started to pry her fingers into the fissure, yanking at the stone hard and managing to pry a few chunks of stone loose. "Unless you wanna be fucking roasted! Don't think I won't do it!"

Flitch wished so much that she could speak in the marten form so she could taunt the stupid dragon woman uselessly throwing herself at the fissure. Of course, it was only useless if Flitch could get out of the 'range of fire' before, well, she had to worry about the range of fire!

Throwing all her weight and strength into it, the marten rolled the egg along the fissure until the crack took a rapid downward turn. Perfect! The egg would roll easier and hopefully the fire wouldn't make it so easily over the dip. With one big heave, Flitch pushed the egg over the lip of the rock and watched in satisfaction as it began to slowly roll down. Chittering something that might have been a laugh, the marten jumped over the sill and disappeared.

It reappeared only momentarily, to stick its tongue out at the dragon. Then disappeared, chasing quickly after the precious egg!

Rhindeer

"WHY, YOU ROTTEN LITTLE--!"

Tanith hissed and snarled, but her threats were empty. She was one of those few dragons that didn't actually breathe fire at all--she breathed air! Both for breathing's sake, and as an elemental weapon. However, even if she was a firebreather, she would have never risked cooking both marten and egg--and even if the egg survived, there was still the matter of retrieving it.

As rage-worthy as it was, the marten was the one in control right now. As long as she had the egg at her mercy, Tanith couldn't risk hurting her.

"FUCK!" Tanith slammed her fist against the rock, cracking it--and hurting her hand enough that she yelped. Thank gods her human form was stronger than an actual human's, or she might have broken a bone.

With a vicious growl that bared inhumanly sharp teeth, Tanith looked around and gathered up some stones, and began to wedge them roughly into the fissure, at first just out of sheer rage--and then strategically. She really shoved them in there, fitting them in tightly, and tested them after. No way a dinky little marten would be able to push those stones back out. At the very least, she'd ensured she'd trapped the little beast on one end.

Now there was just the matter of figuring out where that tunnel lead. Hmm. If it kept going straight back that way, eventually, it would lead out to the sheer face of the mountain.

Just one big, deadly drop down.

It was a gamble, but it was all Tanith had. Turning about on her heel, feeling smugly satisfied that she'd at least blocked up one hole, she jogged back the way she came, out into the ornate chamber, and out the entrance way. There, she transformed yet again and took flight on massive wings.

The hunt wasn't over yet.

If a marten could laugh, Flitch would have laughed gleefully at hearing the dragon-woman's curse reverberate through the cave. How are the mighty fallen! There was nothing like seeing a big blustering bully deflate. Especially when her own cleverness was the cause! Ayelet would have once been too anxious to take such big risks, but Flitch was getting increasingly comfortable with her life as a thief. Why not enjoy it?

As soon as the dragon was gone, the marten continued rolling the egg alone, following close behind it. It was hard work for a little weasel, though! Thankfully, the passage opened up enough to allow Flitch to change back into her human form. She quickly put the emerald egg back in her worn leather sack and half-ran through the passage. It was too tricky to really run; rocks jagged down from the ceiling and up from the floor, waiting to trip the thief and smash the egg. The going was getting easier, though, and Flitch was feeling cleverer and cleverer when...

Oh fuck.

The passage abruptly ended. Into the thin air! The fissure opened onto the sheer face of a cliff. There was nowhere to even cling to to try to climb down. And worse yet: the shadow of the circling dragon fell over the opening. She wasn't out of trouble yet.

This might be the point where a different thief would throw up their hands and admit defeat. But Flitch was not that thief! She was no ordinary thief, and no ordinary shape-shifter. So, she moved several paces back into the passage and, clutching the bag tightly, ran straight into the air.

And jumped.

But the thief didn't fall like a stone to splat onto the rocks below. Instead, where the thief should have been fallen, a great golden eagle was rising. It was easily four times the size of a common eagle. It was the shape of one of the Great Steppe Eagles whose land, on a far away continent, bordered her own forests. The eagle could easily lift a man, but was still far smaller and lighter than the dragon.

And hopefully faster!

Rhindeer

Tanith circled expectantly, high overhead. Yet like a bird of prey, her vision was excellent and she could make out a rabbit scurrying about from even a great distance above. All she had to do at this point was wait. Wait for the thief to show her rotten mug and then snatch her up in her claws and give her the schooling of a lifetime! Maybe she would eat her fucking face! Except that would honestly be weird, since she could shapeshift into a human, too, and...no. It just didn't appeal anymore than eating another dragon did.

STILL. There would be hell to pay.

There was sudden movement below, and Tanith circled again and watched like a hawk. Aha. So she was human again, and--wait. What the fuck? She was throwing herself off the cliff?!

With the egg?!

With a sucked in breath, Tanith folded her wings and fell like a silver bullet, streaking through the air, but she still had long to go before she fell upon the human, and in that time...the human was no longer a human.

But a large eagle.

Oh. So she could shapeshift into multiple forms.

Either way, she was now on her turf!

With a deafening roar that split the air, just to be intimidating, Tanith snapped open her wings, caught the air, and took off after the eagle with bared teeth. The eagle was smaller and swift, but Tanith knew the area--hopefully better than the little bird.

At least Flitch had the element of surprise on her side. For now. She knew that wouldn't last! So while the dragon dove, the eagle rose high up into the air to increase the distance between them. If only vertical distance. Then she soared as fast as she could away from the dragon's mountain. She might have put some distance between them, but Flitch knew she couldn't stay up here for long; high up in the air, she was a sitting duck. Quite literally! Or close enough!

With her golden eagle eyes, Flitch scanned the area. She hadn't planned to escape quite this way, and she didn't have a plan for escaping through air. And from a Very Angry dragon at that! Part of her, though, didn't only want to escape... she wanted to really get the better of the dragon. What a bag of hot air! Far below, a river cut through the mountains into a deep and, for her purposes, narrow gorge. Would it be too narrow for the dragon?

Well, only one way to find out!

So just as the dragon was catching up with her, the eagle dropped into a dive. This was what birds of prey were built for, and she plummeted aerodynamically through the air, only swooping up right before hitting the river. In fact, though she would never admit it, she'd nearly left it too late! Flitch was a bit rusty in this form and nothing would have been worse than not only being caught by the dragon, but humiliating herself by crashing into the water! But as it was, she lifted in time, and flew low above the water into the gorge.
