SOCIETY AND CULTURE

Starstriders possess a fatalistic view to the world and their place in it. However, rather than succumb to fate, Starstriders face it head-on, and flourish with the time they have. Their culture, from their music to their architecture, reflects this strongly: their homes and halls are built sturdy, with interlocking knotwork carved into the stone and crystalwood. However, they are not built to be infinitely permanent. The Starstriders instead take the opportunity to find what works and what does not, and adjust their buildings accordingly. They have over time become quite skilled at carpentry and using whatever materials are available to do the best work possible, and many Starstrider crafters are quite proud of themselves for "making do".

Their homes are set in long lines, with very steep roofs that create almost a complete triangle to the ground. This is to let any snow fall from the rooftops rather than linger and weigh the ceilings down during the long winter months. Their homes are built very tall, as the Starstriders can reach upwards of nearly eight feet in stature and need the extra clearance. As a result, it's much more difficult to create multiple stories without sacrificing the integrity of the buildings, especially against any arctic winds. Instead, a building requiring more rooms might instead be elongated, or crossed with additional halls.

A very clean people, Starstrider settlements have an entire building dedicated to bathing, where members of the community can gather to wash in magically cultivated springs. Grooming is deeply important, and the Starstriders will often trade with other cultures if it means a continual supply of new hair oils and soaps. While bathing is public, it's still considered a deeply personal time where a person may unwind and be alone with their thoughts, and any roughhousing or loud talking is frowned upon. Children quickly learn to either sit still or to hate bathtime entirely.

Another thing the Starstriders like to trade for are different spices. There are several plants that weather the cold climate in Veila Kaur, including a specialized pepper that is present in nearly every dish. However, Starstriders enjoy trying new flavors, and will quickly incorporate traded spices into their cuisine whenever possible. At the very least, any meat prepared for consumption will be herbed and very spicy.

Clothing tends to be functional. More tolerant of the winter climate, Starstriders forgo shoes entirely, as it's simpler for crossing fresh snow more quietly. They instead wear long leggings to protect from brush, with overlapping layers of cloth and furs over their torso. Jewelry is made of forged metals, twisted into elaborate braids and curved into armrings or torcs. The royal families may even have gems cut into bright star shapes added and enchanted to glow in dim lighting.

MAGIC

Capability of being either psychic or magic depends on House. The mages are known as Wordsmiths, who speak their spells into being or otherwise inscribe runes onto parchment for others to carry as talismans. Spells can be similarly weaved through chanting and singing, which often leads to a trance-like state for the Wordsmith in question as they alter the fate of their targets.

Psionics are more instinctual and natural, and tend to deal with more practical effects in a quick moment rather than requiring careful ritual.

RELIGION

Life, as the Starstriders know it, began with a calamity from the skies. The stars that fell mixed with the lights in the evening sky, and through that fusion, the Starstriders were born. They understand themselves to be made of the stars, sharing a deep connection to the songs they hear above them. As such, their religion is entirely astrology based, with names for specific stars that they can easily pick out without need of a constellation to guide them. Many Starstriders consider their House star to be their kind of patron deity-- the specific star that influences their House coloration is also their guiding light in life.

Their understanding of the universe is also bathed in apocalyptic prophesy. The Starstriders hold the firm belief that the universe as we know it is not a permanent, perpetual fixture. More and more stars will perish, leaving only the inky void of nothingness behind.

GOVERNANCE

Each major city of Veila Kaur operates as its own, smaller kingdom, following the rule of their local king. Each of these kings swears fealty to the High King or High Queen, who looks after the needs of Veila Kaur as a whole.

LAW

Laws are based on common, contemporary sentiment. For every community, there is a Thing, which is an assembly of the elves of that community. In these Things, the elves openly discuss courses of action, with the Wordsmiths presiding. Every Starstrider has equal say in the Thing, so even the lowest hunter is equal to the High King. Once a sentiment is decided upon, the Wordsmiths speak it in a kind of magical chant, cementing it as law applicable to every Starstrider in the land. Sentiments may change over the centuries, and so very few laws remain set in stone.
Certain crimes, however, are understood to be crimes no matter what the century, and the only difference between different Things is the punishment assigned to violators of those laws.

However, Things also serve as courts of law, where the community once again assembles to hear out the accused and determine their guilt or innocence, and what the most just course of action should be.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

She Wen Shi Khaganate: Neutral, with some skirmishes being possible but not terribly common. The elves will side with the She Wen Shi when appropriate, even if that means not readily helping the other side of a conflict.

Shijie Empire: Somewhat hostile. The Shijie-ren have attempted to expand their empire too many times in living elf memory. As such, without clear signals of peaceful intentions and a great show of respect, the elves will attack the Shijie-ren on sight.

Northern Orcmen: Varies. The elves trade heavily with the Northern Orcmen, but also do battle with them when the Orcmen arrive at a community for a raid. The two societies have an "easy" sort of understanding, and the Orcmen readily signal their intentions from a distance for love of fighting their preferred foes in the elves.

ECONOMICS AND RESOURCES

Trading, fine gems and precious metals, fishing, hunting and hides. Their most valuable resource is what they call crystalwood. Rather than traditional forests, Veila Kaur possesses living crystalline trees that begin life as if made out of glass. Over time, the bark hardens, and the tree becomes more and more opaque, deepening to a dark smokey color when the wood is at its hardest. Strong and easily enchanted by Wordsmiths, crystalwood is valued for its versatility in a number of purposes

TECHNOLOGY

Crystal based artefacts, carpentry and forging. Starstriders are not particularly advanced in their technology, but have instead perfected the materials with which they work. One does not need an automatic system to chop wood if the axes available are sharp enough to fell a tree in one swing, and lighter still.

LANGUAGE AND NAMING

Veila Kaur primarily speaks in Starstrider elven, with some Embass and Orcish

Starstrider elven, and thus their names, are breathy, full of vowels, often incorporating soft sounds like th, v, and l. Unlike their southern neighbors in the Shijie Empire and Rulastinia, names are in the order of given name first followed by surname, with titles preceding.

RACE

Starstriders are very far from human. They stand taller than most, with a minimum height of 5'11" all the way up to 7'5" at their tallest. They are sexually monomorphic, meaning that every elf possesses both reproductive organs, and like many other Panzhong natives, do not possess mammary glands. This has similarly affected other 'standard' secondary sex characteristics, as no matter the gender of the individual, all Starstriders possess feminine voices that range from an alto to a high soprano. Their increased height has also necessitated alternate internal organs, and each elf has two hearts and increased lung size and capacity, which allows them to move swiftly for long periods of time.

All Starstriders possess sharpened, elongated canines, with sharpened premolars in lieu of standard human molars. This is due to them possessing an almost exclusively carnivorous diet, with a strong preference for venison and fish. Their lack of standard molars means they have a terrible time chewing processed grains like bread or vegetable matter that requires considerable mastication.

Another facet of Starstriders is two pairs of openings in the roof of their mouth. These secondary vocals produce a sound reminiscent of glass harps but dependent entirely on the individual. These sounds are involuntary and very faint, and are only noticeably audible to human hearing when the elf is experiencing particularly intense emotions. Considerable grief or anger, for instance, would be a catalyst for someone other than a Starstrider being able to hear the secondary voice.

Functionally immortal, Starstriders can be killed and get sick, but they will never die of old age. As a Starstrider ages, in fact, their physical aging process slows down: as infants, they age one year to a human's six until they reach adulthood at 120, wherein they slow down even further to one year to a human's twelve. This pattern carries on each century, until it takes entire human lifetimes for them to age one year.

However, their emotions do run several shades deeper than most other species, and as such they are susceptible to health concerns if particularly strong emotions are present for too long. Excessive stress, depression, anxiety, anger and heartbreak can result in physical ailments like organ damage and muscular deterioration.

Elven genetics are severely strong - Starstrider genes are dominant and it takes several generations of dilution to obtain visible non-elven characteristics such as eye color, skin color, or ear shapes.

HOUSES

At birth, Starstriders are born semi-transluscent with the exception of House Horizon. As they age over the months, the baby elves slowly solidify into their House coloration, and are identified by the color of their blood. In rare cases, pigmentation disorders may occur. Albino adult elves never gain their full House coloration, and remain partially see-through in patches. Melanistic elves maintain a darker shade of their House hue, though their eyes remain the same as non-melanistic members of the same House.

Procyon

Born under a white-dwarf star's influence, Procyons average at about six feet in height. They tend towards very pale, iridescent types of colors, with baby-blues, pale pinks and seafoams making up their skin coloration. Their hair is white, they don't tan and typically do not have freckles. Their mouths are pearlescent, with bright white teeth, and their eyes have a lilac sclera and green-blue irises. Their pupils are nearly white.
   Percent chance of psionics: 7%
   Percent chance of magic: 12%

Archernar

Born under a blue star's influence, Archernars average at about 6'4". They are always varying shades of blue, with lighter, grey-blue skin. Their hair holds the most hue variance, and can range from dark navies to deep purpling blues or teals. Their teeth and mouths tend to be silver-blue in hue. Their eyes have an off-white sclera and pale irises pupils, like moonlight.
   Percent chance of psionics: 11%
   Percent chance of magic: 11%

Phaeton

Born under a yellow star's influence, Phaetons average in height at about 6'10". The most 'human' looking, Phaetons have golden-tanned skin and bright blonde hair. They are never pale, and their hair can be a deep gold all the way up to platinum blonde. Their mouths are golden and bright, much like their eyes, which gives them the illusion of glowing like the sun.
   Percent chance of psionics: 7%
   Percent chance of magic: 8%

Antares

Born under a red giant star's influence, Antares are huge, standing up to 7'5" and broad shouldered. Their skin is always dark, never going lighter than a deep tan with red undertones. Their hair color is almost always a crimson-red hue, though some individuals may have more orange in their hair. Their mouths and eyes tend towards a fiery-orange-red, like a glowing furnace.
   Percent chance of psionics: 3%
   Percent chance of magic: 17%

Horizon

Horizon elves are born whenever a Starstrider mates outside of their Resonance in any fashion. If the person an elf mates with is not their true soulmate, any resulting children will always be House Horizon.
Said to be harbingers of a time when there will be no more stars in the sky, Horizons are a dark grey, with pitch-black hair that absorbs all light without reflecting it. Their eyes are a bright, glowing blue, and their mouths resemble that of black mambas. Their height varies depending on what House they might have been if their parentage had been Resonances.
   Percent chance of psionics: 65%
   Percent chance of magic: 1%

GENDER

All elves have the same set of reproductive organs; any elf can theoretically give birth, or impregnate another individual, depending on who their mate is. This is not determined by gender, as a woman elf can wind up siring all her children, while her male mate can end up being the one to give birth all the time.

Elves possess only one "sex", and gender identity is entirely decided upon who the elf is. It's audible in their personal 'song', and other elves can hear and pick up on that instinctively, and address their companion accordingly. In other words, just by virtue of meeting Elf B face-to-face, Elf A automatically knows that Elf B identifies as female, and may address her by the proper pronouns without having to ask.

What humans might consider secondary sex characteristics that determine gender (like growing facial hair) is just across the board common for elves and up to personal taste. The current fashion is that beards are kept short and simple, but there's no concept of beards being exclusively male.

Similarly, clothing is treated as broadly unisex, with individual tastes being more important than presenting as a certain role.

SEXUALITY AND RESONANCE

The secondary vocals are linked to what the elves call Resonancy: each elf has a unique sound unlike anyone else's, the audible representation of the Starstrider's soul, and there is only one person out in the wide world whose sound harmonizes with theirs. It's through listening to this sound (present only in other sapient individuals), that the Starstrider will find their mate for life.

As Resonancy is the determining factor for many elves, sexuality is much more fluid across the entire population. Being hyper-monogamous, meaning they will very rarely mate with anyone but their soulmate, the gender of their determined partner matters much less than the partner themself.

However, there are cases of asexual and/or aromantic elves, whose Resonancy is more akin to a platonic soulmate. In these cases, so long as they can maintain a close relationship such as friendship, it serves the exact same purpose as the rest of their kin.
