Title: A Spoonful of Sugar Helps the Medicine Go Down [Goblin]
Post by: Juno on December 27, 2012, 09:40:52 PM
He was late, but he wasn't worried about that. A cursory look around had him pinning himself as the best dressed and, in his mind, that already placed him far above all of these ants. Besides, the place seemed tacky to him. Dressed up nice, but if he pulled off all of the gaudy decorations he was sure he would find nothing worth calling quality in the craftsmanship. Still, it was a respectably sized hall and one large enough to conceal the friend he'd been searching for off-and-on.

It wasn't a party he'd normally attend, but he had come as a favor to Lucus. As far as he could tell from conversation, it was mostly a gathering of those of comfortable wealth: small-time landowners and the like.  He'd yet to hear someone speak of something that might interest him, that might lie outside the norm for these people he was quite sure had never set foot outside of Serendipity.

He wasn't interested in small town gossip or whose wretched son was marrying whose clueless daughter next spring. No, those were things he'd grown tired of hearing many years ago. It didn't benefit him. It didn't interest him. It didn't get him thinking or jumping at the chance to pipe in. It was all so predictable, so normal, and these people had nothing in their lives but themselves and the little mound of money they dared call a mountain.

Events were quickly reminding him of why he hardly ever bothered with people "like them" unless it was for a quick and dirty meal, which was gradually becoming far more interesting prospect to him as the first hour passed.  What might it be tonight? Old or young? Woman or man? He wasn't sure yet, but he stepped away from the wall to begin circling the room again, though this time with the leisurely pace of someone shopping a market. Wondering which wares he might sample first, dark eyes settling on each person he passed if but for a moment before he resumed his scan, unsure of what he was searching for just yet.

Delicate hands pinned up the last wispy strands of moonbeam hair into its intricate loops and braids. The figure admired herself in the mirror just as a second pair of hands came to rest firmly on her shoulders. Amleah turned her head to rest her pale cheek against the back of her brother's hand as her eyes met his within the looking glass.

"Perfect as ever my sweet," he whispered down to her, rubbing his thumb against her soft skin. "Are you ready now? Wouldn't want those simpletons thinking they were better than you, now would we."

"Now brother, you mustn't forget you promised several of your dances to me. I would be bereft without such a smart figure in my arms."

The dark-haired man allowed one corner of his mouth to lift slightly while meeting his twin's gaze. "Never fear little heart, I will always be watching you. Now quickly before they forget us altogether and you are left dancing with the garden gnomes again."

"They weren't that short now. You make me sound like a giantess," the noblewoman protested as she alighted fluidly from her stool and took her brother's proffered arm. Together the pair continued out the door and down the hall to be paraded in front of an uninterested and calculating gathering before the true socializing could begin.

Both were well-suited to this atmosphere having been making their rounds in many circles in their own homeland thanks to Amleah's newer status as Tirial's High Lady. Ro'or soon broke away from his sister, allowing her to talk and exchange pleasantries with other women at the poor excuse of a ball while he prowled the shadows, an ever watchful eye on his hard to miss sister.

She was a tall yet delicate woman and many men had already sought her favor. He could tell that with each attempt she grew more bored and desired nothing more than to dance to the lively music the quartet was playing. But, the longer she waited the more desperate for his company and dependent upon him she became. He need not fear though for the only ones who could sweep dear Amleah away from him were those that could not only dance but rival his sweet sister in height. If there was anything the woman hated it was having her toes stepped on her partner's head level with her stomach.

There was a gradual change in the energy of the room, of the way people moved. He could see that eyes were being drawn to one side of the room and everyone was gradually pressing in. Most importantly, though, he was quickly losing track of the more appetizing individuals of the gathering. His mouth twisted into a grimace as his eyes lifted to look across the room where most of the attention seemed to be now. His hardened gaze quickly settled upon a woman he was sure he'd never seen before.

The light, almost glowing nature of her hair had him briefly pondering the idea of her being fae or some other magical being. He could tell from where he stood that she was certainly the tallest woman gracing this hall, unless some other mystery woman should show her face tonight. He eyed the chattering swarm a few moments longer before he stepped off to circle closer into it.

Occasionally he glanced over at her, watching the amusing advances others were making. For several minutes he ran through the mental list of families he was acquainted with, just trying to place her somewhere. Who did he know with that hair? Certainly no one in Featherfall. Perhaps it was a local trait he'd yet to become aware of. But the further he went into his memory without turning up anything the more curious he became.

All he could gather from the clucking of the circles of several women was that so and so had seen her at such and such, so he was going right to the source. As he approached her and was able to see more of her, though, he realized her height was truly her own and not enhanced in any way. A slow smirk rose to his lips instead now as he patiently waited for the man currently nearest to her to step away so that he could slide right into his place.

"Good evening, Madame," he greeted while bowing to her. Glancing over his shoulder as he rose and then directing his attention back to Amleah, Akakios flashed a knowing grin to the man who'd just departed. "I do believe we met just last week, if only briefly. I regret we never got to finish our conversation then, but...might we resume it now?" he asked, extending a hand to her. "Perhaps if we're lucky we'll catch the last half of this set, hm?"

The whole thing was a bore. Ro'or had wanted to come for his own reasons but, he had also promised her that she could dance and as of yet all any male wanted to do with her is talk her ears off or gawk at her because of her height. It was all so very disappointing. And where was Ro'or in all this? Skulking around most likely, watching but never interfering with the High Lady's business.

Yet another guest greeted her and Amleah turned his bow with a small bob of her head. Her status was higher than everyone else's in the room and Ro'or would not approve of her bending to their levels. 'Even if I must bend simply to hear them.'

Her warm eyes traced up his lithe figure as he rose to a height higher than her own and she nearly giggled in relief. Finally someone she could lift her head up to instead of her down. Her poor neck had already begun to ache. He was certainly an interesting man to be sure, tall and quite confident in himself. 'He must think himself so suave and debonair. I am not so easily fooled.'

"I certainly would hope not sister mine," Ro'or's voice echoed back within the shared space of their mind. "Who is he? I do not recall his name."

"Nor do I, yet he claims to know me and have an unfinished conversation with me. Surely if you do not remember him brother, it is not true."

Ro'or shifted his position, weaving between couples getting cozy in the shadows in order to get a better look at the man that was currently vying for Amleah's attention. "Dance with him if you wish. I'm sure you can tangle him in his own web my little sparrow."

"Don't forget your own responsibilities to me brother. A promise is a promise," Amleah sent back firmly, her eyes drifting from the stranger to her relation standing in the distance. A smirk and mock bow was her answer before he once more preformed his disappearing act to watch her from a new vantage point.

Smiling coyly she once more met the gentleman's eyes, a knowing look set deep within her chocolate orbs. "I would be delighted to take a turn around the room with you. Ladies, if you'll excuse me," she bobbed her head this time in dismissal, already turning to head to the dance floor she had be dying to be on since she first left her room for this farce of a ball.

"Now I do believe that we were cut off before you can answer my question last week. I am quite glad you'll now have the chance as I have been curious to know the answer."

He was surprised at the small gestures she made and almost turned to see what was so interesting to her across the room, but instead he remained politely waiting before her.  Once her attention was finally upon him again and she granted his request, though, he was a little taken aback that she did not take his hand or motion to take his arm instead. Slowly, he let his arm relax again to rest against his side. He had no idea of the private conversation taking place elsewhere.

Turning with her instead, he stepped off to walk her out to the edge of the group while curiously eyeing her from the corner of his eye. "I'm touched it's been on your mind all this time. Such a simple thing, really, but I'm glad we meet again.

"Are you fond of the sea? It's quite a lot like her. Endless. Dark. Very easy to become lost in, yet it gives you a sense of warmth and comfort...reassurance, if you will, as it leads you further in. Like a living thing itself... I wonder if they are enchanted sometimes," he pondered as he led Amleah into the quick steps of the dance.

"But it's all a trap, you see. Not in the physical sense, but once you see the beauty of it...it's difficult to let go, to turn on it when you know what lies in waiting. Many greedy men have died for the chance to steal from it... I've yet to hear of a single success, though, but that's all so dark and gloomy. Surely there must be something else you're more interested in now, fair lady."

She gasped softly in mock surprise even as her feet nimbly kept up with him and added a few flourishes here and there. "Oh dear! Already you have forgotten my interest in dark and gloomy things. I fear that I am of no interest to you anymore, how dreadful!"

"He's an observer. You caught his attention, I doubt you have lost it so quickly."
"And you would know this, how?"
"I'm offended! You don't trust me? Your own brother?"

Amleah whirled in a gentle spin her eyes searching for her twin and came up with nothing before returning back to the intriguing gentleman's arms. "Ro'or!"

"I've been watching him."
"Now was that so hard?"

The young woman got a sense of amusement from her twin but no words met her inquiry as expected from the brooding man and his secretive ways. Instead she brought her attention back to the man dancing with her in perfect rhythem. 'He's like a dream. Better than even you brother!"

"So tell me good sir, whom did I drag your interest away from tonight? Or shall I guess? I'll bet she was a pretty little thing. Perhaps with fire in her eyes. Or are you the kind of Lordling who prefers a woman with moonbeams and starlight?"

"You're shooting in the dark. Careful sister."
"It is a noble ball-"
"For lesser nobles. Do not forget your place, you have a long way to fall."
"And you to always catch me. Who is he, anyway?"
"Interesting," Ro'or replied cryptically before falling silent.

He had found himself a perch in the shadow of a staircase where he could comfortably watch both his sister and her dance partner. Around him people chattered behind their gloved hands about the pair and every other bit of gossip they could muster. But, as of yet none was interesting enough to catch the lord's attention. He knew his sister was a far better source than these petty fops. Amleah's charm had won over many before and would do so again, if her brother had anything to say about it. This man was persistent and Ro'or liked it. Both parties knew their conversation was a lie of an introduction and yet both upheld it as if it were true. The longer it held together, the better a fabricator. Lord Dvorak knew his sister, the real question was, how well could this newcomer play their little game.

"I assure, you madam, I am interested," he chuckled under his breath, though he let the dance lead them on. He was ignorant to the silent conversation going on across the room.

He twirled her in his arms, smirking at her questions. "I assure you you are the only woman worth my attention tonight, lady," he replied, amused at how her questions seemed, typical of women to want to know their competition. "I quite like your moonbeams, though," he added, brushing a finger to the light hair dangling  just above the nape of her neck as he looked into her eyes, "And your starlight."

"You sly fox you," she chuckled, genuinely amused by his charm. "Stealing my words and casting them back at me, are we? Have you no shame? Or is it that you can find no better words?" Her cheeks warmed from both the dance and his touch. It delighted her to have this kind of attention. It was a breath of fresh air to be sharing in playful banter and mystery instead of inane gossip and political maneuvering. The fact that her dancing partner for the moment was both attractive and good at playing along only served to make it more enjoyable.

"So tell me, sir, what brings you here tonight? I must admit that after last week I did not think I would find someone like you in a lowly party such as this. You're too fine," her eyes playfully looked him up and down as the corner of her lips lifted, "a gentleman to be resigned to this sort of gathering. You could not have known I would be here, when we only decided to come this past week."

She leaned in close and conspiratorially, her cheeks appearing rosy under the ballroom lights. "Unless of course you were just hoping I would be here. Pining away and turning up at every event in dire straights to see me again. No, I don't think I believe that. Again, you are too fine for that," Amleah chuckled.

He would let her think what she would; no words from his lips would convince her of any wit or talent he possessed. It was a curious thing, though, to find her playing along so well. Her quickness, playful as it seemed, reminded him he should be cautious of her even though he was terribly curious of his mystery lady.

"Forgive me, lady, but 'we?' I apologize if I stole you away from your partner tonight," he said with a solemn note, glancing about the room briefly to see if they were being watched, though he didn't meet any eyes immediately. "I confess, I hoped, but I didn't know you would be here tonight. I'm glad I caught you.

"No, I'm here as a favor of sorts. Are you acquainted with a Mister Renwick?" he asked, bringing her close for a moment as they swapped sides. "Or the hosts?"

Amleah blushed and looked away, as if the realization that she was dancing with another was shameful. "Aye, he shall not mind it though. He is always so busy," she sighed wistfully.

"Come now dear sister, surely that is not true. Have I done you so much wrong, you must paint me in such a poor light? That's hardly fair."
"You still have yet to dance with my brother. I will hold you to your promise."
"I would hate to break the two of you up."
"Do we know a Renwick?" she mentally asked, brows furrowed in thought.
"We do not."

"I am familiar with the hosts but I'm afraid I don't recall meeting a Mister Renwick," the high lady stated slowly, still pondering the thought. "Is he here tonight? He sounds vaguely familiar," she lied, "but I really can't place a face to the name as it were. To which industry is he affiliated? He isn't old money, is he? So few here, are." A hint of disgust filled her tone, as was expected of her station.

The niggling thought, voiced by her own twin within her head only fueled her shame and flushed her cheeks. "Of course, you of which are not."

Shaking her head, she tried to ignore him and stumbled in her steps instead, bringing her back to her dance partner whose foot she had accidentally trod upon."Forgive me, sir. It seems my mind wanders far from where my feet try to lead it. I did not hurt you too badly, did I? I do not know what has come over. I am never this clumsy." Amleah stopped dancing, a worried frown creasing her brow. She felt slightly light-headed and wondered how long before food was served. Hopefully it would not be as long as the higher class balls she had been to where everything stood on ceremony making the night drag on without end.

Relieved to hear her assurance, Akakios danced on with his partner without issue. He was surprised to hear such frankness in her tone regarding Renwick's wealth. Chuckling some, he lifted his chin proudly and said, "Not old money, no, but he certainly has a sizable estate to his name. Still, I understand many see differences between old and new money."

As she stumbled and her shoes scuffed at his boots, the vampire slowed to a halt as he noticed her stopping. "It's nothing, really. I hardly felt it at all," he tried to assure her, though he moved to guide her from the dancing crowd now at her admissions. "Perhaps we should sit instead," he suggested, though he was already leading her towards the hall they would be dining in soon enough. "Would you like some water?"

She followed his lead gracefully, leaning lightly on his arm. "Aye, taking a bit of a rest does sound like quite a good idea. I just don't know what has come over me all of a sudden. I do admit to feeling a bit faint although I do not wish to trouble you my lord. Please take no worry for me. I will be fine in no time," Amleah assured him as she moved to take a seat in the hall.

Her skin was pale beneath her makeup and she placed a hand to her heart while lightly fanning herself. While it was in part show for one male, the display had not escaped the notice of another.

"What ails you sister," rang the sultry voice inside her head.
"A touch of hunger is all. Nothing to fear brother. I've had worse before." Even as she said it though, Amleah could feel the brief flashes of displeasure sliding from her brother's side of their bond. She knew how he hated any reminder of their past suffering, especially hers.

"Send him away. Dinner is almost served and I will escort you." Her head inclined almost imperceptibly in response. Amleah knew her brother would not be far. He never was.

"I'm sorry to be such a disappointment this evening my lord. Perhaps though your evening is not completely ruined and you can still find another young lady to sweep off her feet before the night is through. I'm sure that wouldn't take much effort for a man such as yourself," she spoke slyly with a twinkle in her eye and a faint smirk on her lips.

Though her words were spoken like a true lady, Akakios had seen enough of human nature in his life to know that something was bothering her. He just hadn't figured out what that was yet. Standing before her, he glanced over his shoulder at what he could see of the crowd gathered near the doorway. It would only take him a few moments, he was sure, to go get her something. Drawn back to her as she spoke though, his own lips mirrored hers as she gave him compliments.

"You are no disappointment at all. But...you imply, my lady, that I would catch the attention of some other fine young lady in attendance. I can only say that, through my experience, such a woman as you rarely appears twice. Though I thank you for your well wishes," he teased, winking and stepping aside as he heard a small group come through the doorway.

"You are a truly exquisite dancer, you know. That is so rare these days," he sighed happily. The clinking of crystal in the distance reminded him of his earlier offer, though. "I'll fetch you a glass of something cold," he stated, bowing to her with a great depth he reserved only for a select few. "And if you're feeling better later, I would love to catch up more. Perhaps over another dance or two." The vampire smiled warmly as he rose, an expression he had mastered down to the smolder. And with that, he turned smoothly and strode fluidly back to the main hall to fetch the vessel he had promised.

Amleah smiled honestly while a faint blush warmed her cheeks. "You flatter me sir but I do believe you are mistaken. There are many other flowers out there just as pretty if not prettier than I." Her eyelashes batted slightly so that she was looking up at him through them. "You are too kind."

She reached out to protest but he was already leaving her so she let it fall once more to rest limply in her lap. He was gone from her sight but a moment before a shifting in the shadows beside her alerted the High Lady of her brother's presence.

He observed her silently a few moments before finally speaking. None of her interactions with the other nobleman had escaped his notice. "You're smitten," he accused, helping her to her feet.

"I'm bored," she countered coldly while glaring up at him. What few ever realized about Amleah was that she could be just as unforgiving as her twin. Ro'or made a note to himself to give her more than once dance that night. It would not due to have her furious with him on the long ride home they would be sharing in their cramped carriage.

"Forgive me then, my dear. I thought you were enjoying your little game. If I had known you needed a rescue sooner I would have jumped to your aid. My sincerest apologies," he intoned while bowing deeply before her.

In the main room a gong sounded, signaling the readiness of the evening meal. As one, the noble twins linked arms and began to join the other guests on their way to the dining room. As honored guests the Dvorak twins were expected to sit near the head of the table, so Amleah did not expect to see her former dancing partner anywhere near her as well. A part of her regretted not being able to converse with him longer. She only hoped that Ro'or would find out more information on him so that she could return to playing her little word games again.

Melding back into the crowd, Akakios ignored the chatter swirling around him as he had drinks poured: water for her and a tall glass of wine for himself. It seemed that his hands would be full for quite some time yet, though, as he heard the gong to announce the beginning of the meal. Turning to face the wide doorway, he stared moodily at the gathering of people all trying to squeeze inside as politely as possible. He hung back a bit, not wanting to get jostled for the full glasses in his hands. At least he was glad he wouldn't have to wait now to be served a drink.

Suddenly, the annoying chatter all around grew louder and far more grating upon his ears. Keeping a level head, though, his eyes scanned his surroundings until he made contact with a familiar pair well beyond the other side of the doorway. Comically making his way against the flow of the crowd to join Akakios, Lucas Renwick waved as though the fellow nobleman had never looked at him at all and he desperately needed to catch his attention. "I'm glad to see you made it!" he greeted once he finally reached his friend's side. "I've been looking all over for you. Where have you been?"
"I haven't been hiding, I've kept in plain sight," Akakios remarked with a shrug. "Perhaps I'm becoming better at hiding. Or your eyesight is going."
"Oh please don't say that," the younger man chuckled. "I'm so glad you came, though, really."

"I'm here because you wanted me here. I would never abandon you at such a sad little party," he teased, shrugging. "Besides, I'm interested in what I can find for a meal while I'm here."
"I would be careful if I were you," he warned playfully, knowing full well that he never knew the vampire to act rashly. "But don't call it sad. I think you'll be pleased to meet the hosts and their guests tonight."
"If you insist," he yawned, bored already at the prospect of sitting through a meal he could not partake in.

Once the flow of foot traffic had dwindled and had all but died, the pair walked side-by-side as they entered the hall they would be dining in tonight. The room was buzzing with chatter but he was focused on following his friend as he led him down towards the head of the table. As they walked down the long room to get to the other end, though, he scanned the table for the woman he had been dancing with before. Not seeing her, he was disappointed and thought she might have vanished in the night to leave him stuck with both glasses and an empty stomach.

Ro'or escorted his sister to the dinner table, pulling out her chair and helping her to sit before joining her in the seat to her left. They were together seated to the left of the head of the table and their host. The hostess sat to her husband's right and beside her were two as of the moment, unfilled seats. He watched as his sister made smalltalk with their hostess, holding both the Wechslers' attention while he surveyed the table-settings and those in attendance.

The fact that the seats across and diagonal to him both remained empty even as the host called for the room's attention and introduced him and Amleah as the guests of honor only served to further intrigue and disgust him. The amount of rudeness in such highly placed guests was ridiculous. To be placed so close to the head of the table and not be in attendance was appalling. He was not surprised that those in attendance here were in such dire straights for attention. Such was the way with the lowly nobles that fed from their higher up's tables like dogs.

The High Lady's adviser was therefore intrigued and disappointed all in the same breath note that the empty seats were being at last filled by an obnoxiously exuberant man he had been avoiding being noticed by all evening and the man who had been dancing with his sister not much earlier. A glance to his right told him Amleah was still in deep conversation with Lord Wechsler about something silly and had therefore not noticed the presence of the other two men.

'Social climber, I might have known that was why you were after her. How droll,' he mused boredly. Amleah sensing his thoughts but not hearing them sent him a questioning mental nudge while not outwardly appearing any different.

"All's well, brother?"
"Just another disappointment, my dear. Nothing to worry about," he assured her while taking a sip of his wine.

As they finally reached their places at the table Akakios didn't even think to check further up the table, for he had not assumed the woman he had been dancing with before would ever be seated ahead of him. Sitting down, he was pleased to find that he would be spared the awkward conversation about his lack of a human appetite given that his seat was free of plates and only a neatly folded napkin was set before him. Setting the glasses down, he turned to Lucas, who was already deep in conversation with the woman beside him, and whispered his thanks for his friend's forethought.

Getting settled, he sat up straight again and looked across the table at the dark-haired man and nodded in silent greeting as he lifted his glass of wine to his lips, a small twitch of a smile visible there. He had no idea who the man was. As he took his drink, though, a familiar voice caught his attention. Smiling knowingly to himself, Akakios set his glass down and watched the conversation patiently, wondering how long they might be entrenched in it.

It was only a few minutes before he felt a slight lull in the conversation. He seized the opportunity to lean across the table and place the glass of water in front of the light-haired woman. "Madame," he greeted kindly, not wanting to interrupt them yet happy he had his prey in his sights again.

Before long he felt a slight tugging on his sleeve and heard an excited voice at his ear. "That's them! That's her," Lucas practically swooned, trying to point discreetly at the pair beside their host.
"Her?" Akakios questioned in a hushed voice, his brow furrowing in confusion.
"Yes! The-" He was cut off by the arrival of their first course, and all but Akakios receiving a plate. "This is why I wanted you to be here," he continued excitedly, grinning with glee as he looked between the siblings.
"Don't just talk about them, Lucas, they're right here," Akakios prompted him, rolling his eyes in irritation.
"Oh, but... I-I don't want to interrupt her, she looks busy," he whispered back, very concerned about Amleah though his eyes lit up as they settled upon her brother.

Amleah looked over to the placed glass in surprise moments before allowing her gaze to rise up the connecting arm to the smiling face above it. Unable to to address him properly due to her current conversation, she nevertheless gave him a gentle smile and bob of her head to indicate both her own greeting and her thanks. The noblewoman made sure to take a sip of the water soon after while watching the lord from the corner of her eye.

The arrival of the first course allowed a break from conversation with her host, to listen to other conversations further down the table. She was surprised to find such an excitable man talking about her quite obviously as if she was not even there. The shock coming from her brother only made the situation even more amusing. It seemed that she was not the only one caught off-guard by the pair.

"Still disappointed?" she asked innocently, amusement dancing through their mental connection.
"No need to feel so smug sister mine. It just seems your dancing partner is a bit more strange than originally expected."
"What do you mean?" Amleah questioned back while taking a bite of her food.
"Have a look for yourself," came the immediate response.

She took another sip of her water and was surprised to see that no plate had been placed in front of the dancer. Smiling brightly though, Amleah looked over to the energetic man and decided to address him first since he seemed so keen in speaking of her within her earshot.

"There is nothing that you would be interrupting me with at this moment if you are so inclined to discuss me. Although I do believe your friend," the noblewoman turned her head to look at the handsome man across the table from her brother with a fond smile, "is quite correct that it is better to ask than talk about someone when they so close to you.

"To you sir though," she addressed her dancing partner, "I must ask your understanding. I had not meant to abandon you when you so graciously left to bring me a drink. Unfortunately, you must understand that duty calls." Amleah beamed, "my heart is glad though to see you so soon again. Thank you for the water."

"Ask him about the food," Ro'or interrupted her.
"Ask him yourself if you're so impatient. Otherwise wait for me to do so in my own time," was her sharp reply as she cocked her head to look to her brother with a complacent grin.

Startled at being addressed directly by her, Lucas was quick to make an apology for being caught talking about her. That, he feared, was a most embarrassing first encounter with the High Lady. Akakios, though, was nothing short of amused for seeing his friend at such a loss for words.

As she addressed him he was careful to maintain eye contact and bowed his head for her praise. "You are very welcome, fair lady. Do not be bothered by such a minor thing, it is hardly worthy of the worry. Though, I certainly understand you have other obligations." He looked to the host and his wife, a gentle but knowing smile slowly creeping to his lips despite his lack of a name still for her. He could only guess that she was quite important for Lucas to want them to meet. His eyes finally settled upon Ro'or for only a moment before Lucas was again at his ear.

"Can I say something now? Is this too forward?"
"Of course not," he tried to assure him, wondering why on earth the man who was usually such a social butterfly was now flustered and uncertain in the face of conversation.

To Amleah, Lucas finally greeted, "I am sorry that we could not have met sooner, Lady. I am Lucas Renwick, a friend of our hosts this evening." He shot a gracious glance to the pair. "I expect they've kept you busy?" he assumed.

Amleah gave her attention to the very sociable gentlemen, feeling the pricklings of her brother's irritation in the back of her mind. She could tell that he was displeased with her lack of attention towards the man he wanted to know more about. Their methods for getting things done were certainly quite different. He would just have to be patient.

"Ah!" she exclaimed leaning forward conversationally. "So you are the Mister Renwick I have been hearing about. It is good to at last put a face to the name. Our hosts have indeed been quite good to both myself and my advising chaperone," Amleah waved fluidly to Ro'or seated beside her. "Thank you for inquiring."

Her twin on the other hand sat straight-backed and impassive while observing both his sister and those interacting with her. As the appetizer course was taken away and a salad brought in its place, he took special interest in the continued lack of a placement for Amleah's dancer.

"Amleah," he practically barked.
"Ask him yourself," she flippantly replied, knowing it would make him bristle.

"However, Mister Renwick I have to say it was our mutual acquaintance," she beamed, looking to the man across from her brother, "who has kept me quite busy this evening. He is quite the dancer. I enjoyed myself thoroughly in his presence."

Getting such attention from her lit Lucas up. "Of course," he answered excitedly. Akakios was more interested in the title she gave to the man beside her. He looked young enough, to him, so he seemed an odd choice for a chaperone let alone an advisor. Still, he chuckled to himself at the thought of how poor a job he thought the man had done earlier to let him dance and have what he assumed was a private moment with the light-haired woman. He was drawn back into the conversation for her praise of him, though, and he nodded to her to acknowledge it.

Thinking he had missed his big chance to introduce them, Lucas's face fell in horror as he looked between his friend and the High Lady. "You mean you've already met?!" he squeaked, immediately turning a harsh but sad face upon him. "Why didn't you tell me you'd met Lady Dvorak, Akakios?!" he demanded sadly.

Taken aback, the vampire looked between the two, confused. "Miss... Dvorak? Well, I don't know, Lucas. I did not know a name to put to such a pretty face before now," he admitted. "How was I supposed to know her?"
"That's... What?! Oh, dear friend," Lucas bemoaned pitifully before looking to the High Lady with embarrassment as he apologized. "I am very sorry, Madam, that my friend came so ill-prepared concerning this province's great news." Still confused, Akakios shot her a wondering look as he was still unaware of her status.

"You need not apologize for our friend, Mister Renwick. I have taken no insult. In fact I found the change of pace in conversation to be quite refreshing. It is not often these days that I get a moment such as earlier," the blonde woman replied happily.

Ro'or on the other hand feeling more and more irritated with his sister's seemingly flirtatious behavior, leaned close to whisper in her ear and effectively interrupt her conversation. His lips pressed close to the shell of her ear and moved without making any sound for the words were sounding in her mind, expressing his growing displeasure.

Unflustered by the interaction but dutifully chastised, Amleah replied to be heard. "Thank you for the reminder, Adviser" came her somewhat formal response. A looked passed between the pair before the woman allowed a smile to once more lift her lips as she turned to face her former dance partner.

"Are you visiting from out of town, then? I thought everyone had heard the news with the way our people gossip," she laughed, hearing their hosts' echoing laughter.

'Better,' her brother's satisfied voice washed over her. 'Just take care with those assumptions.'

Shocked but relieved, Lucas took her words as his cue to relax about his friend's social missteps. "Of course," he said quietly and to no one in particular. He settled back down to his food and to observe Akakios's interactions with her, chuckling at her comment about gossip. It surprised him that he had been able to meet her already, but he assumed that there was something else going on that would not be appropriate table conversation with his friend.

Akakios was impressed with Lucas's sudden level of self-control, but he did feel a bit put on spot with her question about him visiting after his friend's little outburst. Eyeing those around him that seemed amused by her. Allowing a careful, polite smile to spread across his lips, the vampire pondered her question quietly until things settled again. "I'm curious about this news," he admitted, still having absolutely no idea about her importance in her relatively new station. "But, to answer your question, yes. I hail from Featherfall. Are you particularly familiar with it?"

The High Lady simply smiled, choosing to not answer what Tirial's news was as it gave her great amusement to watch the other man squirm with curiosity. "Featherfall! My you certainly are a long way from home," she exclaimed. There was a slight catch in her voice hinting at the laughter bubbling beneath the surface of her words.

"You must have very important business here in Tirial to come so far, unless" Amleah trailed off suggestively as one brow quirked in an unspoken curiosity, "perhaps you come for pleasure instead. To answer your question though, no I can't say that I am personally familiar with the province but I have been fortunate enough to make a few friends among the nobles. Lady Astrid has some very interesting tales of their annual Gryphon hunts, is it?" Amleah turned to her brother with a slightly confused look, waiting for his confirmation before continuing.

"I'm certainly glad Tirial's traditions are far tamer than that," she giggled. "I think I would look like a fool if I ever took her up on such an offer as to join her."

"Very important business," Akakios joked, not realizing how serious an affair this was for her. He continued seriously, "My business is this gathering and those attending it. I came all this way to be here for this, after all."

He was very interested in what she knew, though, and who she knew, especially when she named Astrid. "Yes, the Gryphon hunts. I haven't taken part in those in years, so I understand your hesitation. I'm sure I would make a fool of myself as well." Akakios took another slow drink from his glass before he continued.

"But who are you so personally familiar with?" he wondered, staring at her with that smile again. "We probably have some mutual friends."

'How sad,' she mused somewhat disappointed. 'He came all this way for a tiny little ball. What could even be that important when he has no idea who I am?'

"Feeling jilted dear sister? Jealous that you are no longer the star of the show?"

Amleah blushed, hiding her face in her napkin as salad was replaced by soup. "For shame, Ro'or! Do you find your only sister so shallow?"
"Never," he claimed adamantly. "Just easily flustered."

She mentally growled at him while taking a sip of her soup so that she could compose herself to continue her conversation. "Well as you know, I am acquainted with Astrid. We exchange letters, you see. She really is quite an interesting character. And well," Amleah chuckled embarrassed, letting her gaze drop to her soup bowl for a moment before rising to meet the other man's eyes again.

"You'll have to excuse, however I'm not in the custom of name-dropping. I find it inappropriate especially at the dinner table. I'm sure you understand," she offered with a slightly forced half-smile.

Surprised that she would be so close with his High Lady, Akakios was very interested in what she had to say about their relationship. He realized a bit too late how forward his questions had probably been. A bit embarrassed by her gentle reminder of the inappropriate nature of the topic, Akakios nodded and turned his head to watch his friend for a moment.

"Lucas here wanted me to come down for this. I'm here as a favor to him," he explained, trying to steer the conversation away from talking about others in their absence. "Apparently he wants me to meet with certain people here tonight, though he has been refusing to tell me whom that would be," he said, purposefully teasing his friend.

Smiling knowingly, Lucas shrugged a bit as he sipped at his soup. "Oh, they're well worth the wait. Perhaps after dinner we may have a proper introduction," he said, glancing to Amleah pointedly and winked. Not catching the wink, Akakios nodded and looked towards the opposite end of the table with a bored look on his face.

Amleah hummed softly, bowing her head slightly in response to Lucas, a secret smile answering his own. "Well I hope that you are not too disappointed then with the turn out tonight. True, it is one of our smaller gatherings here in Tirial, however I know without a doubt that the gossip-mongers will have something to say after its conclusion."

"Have you something special planned then, Lady Dvorak?" Lord Wechslers chimed in. "We would be honored if you happened to gift us all with a," he leaned in closer, grinning broadly, "guest performance? Wouldn't you say she has the voice of an angel, Lucas? Surely we can twist your arm into a repeat Lady Dvorak. We have not heard you since the ceremony when you won us all body and soul with your songbird voice."

"Oh, honestly I couldn't. It's really not that grand as you make it out to be Lord Wechslers. You unfairly flatter me," Amleah replied modestly, placing a hand at her throat. "Besides I have nothing prepared! I'm afraid if I tried it would be my swan song."

"Oh tosh! You sir," he addressed Akakios, tipsily waving his full wineglass in the nobleman's direction. "You seem to have Lady Dvorak's favor. Convince her to sing for us. I assure you, you won't regret it for a moment. Our Lady would charm Kia herself down to listen if she so chose."
Title: Re: A Spoonful of Sugar Helps the Medicine Go Down [Goblin!]

Akakios observed the conversation and found that he was quite amused at the prospect of his dance partner also bearing the gift of song. It made him wonder about her and assume she was probably a beloved performer of the province. Perhaps she played an instrument as well, though he was sure a good voice would serve her well enough in the eyes of nobles.

Smiling at their host, he gave his best surprised look at the notion that he had the woman's favor at all. But, he was pleased to think that others thought such a thing about them. He thought it would only serve to improve his standing and chances with getting what he wanted from her if he kept with it. "I do have your favor, don't I, Lady Dvorak?" he teased, playing along though he had no idea that it was actually her proper title.

"Surely one so gifted could manage a small performance? If the audience is your concern I would not complain about a more...intimate arrangement with those of us here." He gestured to the group of five gathered around her. "After dinner, of course," he added before taking another sip of his wine. He looked to the dark-haired man across from him and then sent Lucas a know-it-all smirk at the idea of who he thought was a court singer having a personal adviser. His dark eyes remained trained upon him, though, as he spoke. "Unless, of course, her adviser would advise against to such a thing?"

Ro'or raised a brow at the nobleman's challenge. He suspected but did not know for certain what the other man thought of his sister. "Well I see no reason why you shouldn't Amleah. It certainly beats one of your boring political speeches," he jibed, making her blush darkly and glare mockingly over to him.

"My speeches are not boring," she replied weakly. "Besides, at least people don't fall asleep when I'm talking unlike a tall, dark, and handsome someone I know."

Her brother snorted and shook his head. "I see no problem with a private performance as long as you don't think your guests would be offended Lord Wechslers."

The older man shook his head. "Not at all my good man. Besides, a performance from our own fair lady is not a thing to be missed, protocols be damned! Forgive my language of course ladies."

Amleah chuckled, shaking her head while she sipped more of her water and watched the food courses change yet again without her dancing partner receiving anything. "Pardon me for asking but I can't help but notice your lack of eating, sir. Tell me, do long journeys just not agree with your appetite or are you the kind of man who prefers to imbibe his dinners?" she asked with raised bow and pointed look.

Observing the pair as they talked, Akakios was surprised with the familiarity she used with someone she called adviser and chaperone. It confused him, too, why a singer would partake in politics. He was glad, though, that everyone seemed to be in agreement with a performance by his dance partner. Unaware he was being watched so closely, Akakios was surprised that she pointed out his lack of food. If anything, he had expected that sort of thing at the beginning of the meal.

A knowing smile graced his lips as he glanced at the plates of those to either side of him before looking up to her. Lucas was watching him closely, curious about what he might reveal as the only thing that had been said previously was to their hosts that Akakios would not be dining with the rest of the table.  "I apologize if I offend you, Lady Dvorak. It isn't a loss of appetite that plagues me exactly, I am just accustomed to taking my meals at vastly different hours," he lied. The vampire fed whenever he pleased and however much he pleased given a willing source. He had just yet to find one in his short time in Tirial.

"It is not I whose forgiveness you should be asking. I have no place taking offense as this is not a party I have worked hard to organize," she informed him calmly. "I do hope for your sake though you do not put off eating for too long. It would sadden me to hear such a capable dancer and engaging conversationalist had fallen ill all because he decided to keep odd eating hours."

A bit annoyed that she was taking such a stance against him, Akakios glowered at her. "Our hosts have already been made aware, Lady Dvorak. That is why I am not even receiving a plate," he stated, trying to keep the hiss from his tone. Feeling challenged by someone he assumed was "beneath" him was irritating, but he was trying very hard to keep his patience with her on such an empty stomach. He regretted now the length of time he'd gone without feeding as it was making it difficult to keep himself in check.

"I suppose I should not have phrased it that way," he said with a shrug, downing more of his wine to try and distract himself from the personal struggle he was facing. "I only say it is odd because I take meals at much longer intervals than most." He was unsure why he was telling her this, it really didn't matter what he told her as he planned to never see her again once he'd fed and left Tirial.

"I wouldn't worry about me falling ill, though, Lady. I am...very resilient. Fortunately one of the few things to ever plague me is overeating," he explained with a knowing chuckle.

"No I don't suppose you should have," Ro'or spoke addressing Akakios with a hard look. "I don't know what they teach you off in Featherfall but traditionally a lady, especially those of importance are treated with the utmost amount of politeness and respect."

Amleah's hand moved to rest atop her brother's on the table in a silent gesture to both calm and reign him in. He glanced down to it before offering the lower nobleman a smirk. "If I didn't know better I would say someone's a bit cranky from not having eaten. I would hate to think you are always this puerile."

"That is enough, Ro'or," his sister's voice cut in as she shot him a warning look. Ro'or bowed his head in deference, moving her hand into his own so that he could lay a gentle kiss to the back of it. "And now I must ask your forgiveness. It seems I too have offended you, my dear."

"That you have," she replied tersely, pulling her hand away from him so that she could return to her meal. Ro'or chuckled while sending Akakios a challenging look that suggested to the other man that the lady was his and his alone.

The tone the other man took with him was annoying, but Akakios didn't want to get involved with him anymore than was necessary. Watching them closely, he noted the odd familiarity they shared for just being a lady and her chaperone-adviser. Bowing his head slightly to the pair, he spoke out, if only to attempt to placate them, "My apologies to the both of you. I meant no disrespect."

It was then that he remembered their earlier conversation. Now he could only assume that the man across from him was the partner they had spoken of before. Smirking to himself and feeling quite proud for remembering, he relaxed a bit in his chair. He supposed that this man was only getting defensive with him because he thought he was competition, but Akakios felt he was anything but. He was not a wife-stealer but a wife-borrower.

"And I meant no offense, Lady Dvorak," he continued, refusing to address the dark-haired man or his accusation right now. "The truth is... I am not like you." Lucas shot him a warning elbow jab, sending the message that he'd said quite enough.
"Perhaps later, friend," he prompted nervously as he thought he was getting far too bold. He tried to remind him, "You don't want to scare the rest of the company here." Akakios smiled, glancing to him and nodded slightly.
"I will leave it at that, then. I don't wish for our table conversation to get wrapped up in the boring details anyway. Perhaps over a dance or two later, Lady Dvorak?" he asked, his gaze flickering to her once more.

Both twins took note of the interaction between Renwick and his companion. They silently agreed to gather more information concerning what had just happened and soon. Keeping her gaze on her plate, Amleah replied with a cool, "perhaps," to the nobleman.

In her mind, Ro'or cautioned her against the harder attitude she was employing and suggested she return to her earlier flirtations. She would have none of it. Amleah glared at her brother once more in warning. "Let me do my job and you do yours. You've caused enough trouble already."

"Oh come now my sweet, you're not still cross with me?" he queried aloud. "I'll still dance with you tonight, the night is young."

"I believe my dances have already been filled by another capable gentleman. Surely you just heard that? Or are you going deaf in your old age?"

"What if I advise against it?"

"Wouldn't be the first time I went against my adviser's good common sense," she bantered back with a shrug. "Besides," Amleah continued looking the nobleman up and down, "he looks like a good man. I'm sure he'd take good care of me, wouldn't you sir?"

It didn't bother him that she didn't give a more definitive answer straight away. He had other ideas, other plans should keeping her occupied through dance fall through. Watching the pair bicker, or so it seemed. Akakios was amused and thoroughly pleased with the divide he thought it might cause, if only for the night. Noticing her looks, he did his best to still appear interested even though he had other motives than socializing.

"Of course," he answered with a bow of his head to her, pretending he hadn't just heard them. "The absolute best for you," he insisted, very pleased with the position he thought he was in right now.

"If you graced me with your presence, I would ensure you would not spend one further moment bored tonight, Lady Dvorak," he promised her. "Of course, I am grateful for any time you wish to give regardless."

"Oh my, you're quite confident aren't you? How can you be so sure though that I won't become bored? Are you a mind-reader, perhaps? A magician practiced in the divine art of knowing a woman's deepest desires?"

Ro'or turned to stare at his sister wide-eyed and somewhat slack-jawed. Her more flirtatious nature was an entirely new entity for him to encounter. While he was intrigued by it he also was deeply concerned for her sweet and innocent, High Lady reputation, especially as her position was so newly appointed.

His own hand reached out to seek hers and press firm fingers to the inside of her wrist. "really my dear is that kind of conversation a lady has at the dinner table?"

"Oh hush you! I'm still mad and besides, I want to hear his answer."

Akakios smirked at the bold questions she was posing. Her partner seemed entirely taken aback by her and the vampire was quite enjoying the show. "You do? Really? I'm flattered, Lady Dvorak," he warmly, purposefully eyeing the dark-haired man before looking to the lady he was addressing.

"Unfortunately I'm not a mind-reader, though I do know someone with a talent for that. What I am is very confident in my abilities, dancing being only one. Of course, I cannot guarantee that you will not become bored, but if you are with me then it is my sole purpose to keep you happy and entertained. I think I've been around long enough to know at least a few ways of maintaining that," he said with a very sure-of-himself grin.

He looked to her partner pointedly as he took a sip of his now almost empty wine glass. "Though I must confess I feel your chaperone is correct, Lady Dvorak. A dinner table is no place to talk about a woman's deepest desires. That sort of thing is best kept to much more private conversations. I would hardly do them any justice talking about them here."

Amleah chuckled darkly, while leaning back in her seat in a laid-back fashion. She found both the nobleman's words as well as the reactions of some such as her brother and Lady Wechslers to be incredibly amusing. The older woman was even blushing. The audible click of her brother's jaw though caused a blonde brow to raise as a long-fingered hand moved within her line of sight and removed her wineglass.

"Forgive her, Lady Wechslers. I blame the wine."

"You would," came the high lady's accusatory and bored reply. "However, I don't know how much justice a man can give a talk on a woman's deepest desires when he has yet to properly introduce himself. Or is that perhaps a woman's deepest desire? To know your name sir?"

She smirked from her reposed position, her elbow upon the armrest and the side of her hand resting against her lips as she slightly leaned her head to the side. There was dark mischief in her almond-shaped eyes that spoke of an intelligence that many overlooked in such a youthful face and innocent demeanor. Amleah suspected though this nobleman who played their little game so well would not be such a man to do so though. He was like Ro'or after all, cunning and intelligent with a touch of darkness about him. She liked it.

It bothered him that her drink was being taken from her. He didn't like to see a woman being restricted in such a silly way, as if the wine would disappear if it were taken from her. He thought it quite petty and rude, but he wasn't about to draw attention to it when it seemed he'd gained her interest back again. There were far better things to discuss than his preferences at the table.

Her smirk was answered with one of his own as he stared across at her, as if challenging whether she was really going to go there now. But, he wanted to give her what she wanted. He bowed his head to her slightly to acknowledge her very valid statement. "I apologize for making you wait, Lady Dvorak. I thought you would have remembered from last week," he said, winking.

"I am Akakios Reolaras. To many that name may mean quite a lot and to some others, very little. To many it is what the name can offer that draws them in, Lady Dvorak, their wildest dreams and fantasies realized." He emptied his glass at last, setting it down gently and flicking the stem boredly now that he had no further distractions from his company. "Do forgive my manner of speaking, Lady Wechslers," he offered, gently setting his hand upon the older woman's forearm for a moment before turning to meet the well-hidden glare of Lucas. He could tell that his friend was quite unhappy with him just by his silence, so it didn't take him long to be drawn back to the light-haired woman with a very confident smile.

"Or did you want to hear of some different desires?" he challenged.

Amleah hummed softly. "I have many names to keep track of Akakios, you'll have to forgive me if one or two slip my mind. Although I have to say I'm not really sure what to think of what your name might offer. However, the concept is quite understood. A woman such as myself often must deal with those seeking her attention."

"It helps if she is not flaunting her wares," Ro'or sniped.

The fairer twin looked to her darker counterpart before waving at her own body. "Is there anything immodest about my appearance? Or would you just have me clothed as a priestess and locked away within a windowless tower for all eternity?" She laughed and was pleased to hear others within hearing distance of the table join in. "I think you're just jealous Ro'or, surrounded by mostly men and without a single lady hanging on your every word. What ever will you do?"

"Of course, Lady, I would never think any less of you for it," he answered, quite amused at the idea of her ever forgetting him. He certainly did not intend for her to. The bickering of the pair, though, had him quite interested, especially with the very blunt way she was speaking. He definitely was admiring her spark now.

Akakios smiled. A wedge between them was exactly what he wanted, and he could not be happier that it was happening organically before his eyes. He wasn't quite sure if she was encouraging him to hang around other women or if she was pointing out the fact that she knew he did it. Either way, the vampire thought it might cause some drama and he sat quietly and patiently waiting for something else to happen.

"Care to play a game sister?"
"I thought you were displeased with my behavior tonight brother."
"Lowly nobles will scarcely remember beyond your beauty. You need not fear, my dear."

Amleah cast a glance over her water glass towards Akakios. "And him?"
"What better way to milk the venom from an asp than to send a chick into the snake pit."
"I am bait then?"
"Not at all my flighty bird."
"Let the games begin."

"What shall I do, you ask?" Ro'or repeated, preparing for the verbal battle to come. "What would you have me do, my lady? Would it please you to have me leave and associate with other women? I thought my lady liked me at her side. Was I mistaken? Shall I go?" he offered, placing his hands on the arm of his chair in an attempt to rise.

"Oh quit making a scene. You're such a child, honestly. Enjoy your dinner and keep your advising to a minimum. I thought you promised that tonight would be about enjoyment. Why do I get the feeling it is all about politics? That's how it always with you, isn't it?"

Her brows furrowed as her lips pursed and she turned in her seat to face him. Switching to Old Serenian, she began to hiss angrily at her brother in the beloved tongue of Tirial. Many of the guests nearby halted in their conversations to eavesdrop on High Lady and Adviser alike. It was not uncommon knowledge that the two were related. Many had speculated the extent of their relationship and now found it amusing to listen to them quarrel. Behind hands they whispered about how long it would be before Lady Dvorak took a new adviser who could see to her needs better than the shadow-dweller Ro'or.

"Excuse me," she stated shakily, rising to her feet and causing the males around her to rise as well in respect. "I need to powder my nose. Stay Ro'or. Kia knows I don't need you following me there as well. I will be back, nothing's going to happen to me in the mean time. Honestly," she huffed, leaving the table and the room with the grace of a pureblood noblewoman.

Akakios could not believe his luck for the pair to be arguing before him. The possibility of it all being staged wasn't even crossing his mind. As he watched them, he snagged a server and asked for another glass of the wine he'd been drinking. It came rather quickly, but the vampire was far too distracted by what was happening around him when it replaced his empty one.

Looking left and right down the table as most of the men rose when she stood, the nobleman was quite confused. In all his life he had never seen a mere entertainer honored in such a public fashion. But more than that, it was the chilling, beautiful sound of the Old Serenian tongue that captured his attention.

The more she said, the more drawn in the vampire became. It was a shock to him, to hear someone speaking the language so fluently. He was not aware of the language still being a tradition among Tirial, especially its nobles. He himself had not heard a word of it uttered by someone besides himself in a very, very long time. Though she was not speaking to him, it still struck Akakios quite powerfully, taming him temporarily to hear his mother tongue spoken with such fluidity and grace.

He watched the woman go until she was completely out of sight, and then he watched the men sit back down. Looking to Lucas with a confused expression, he wondered why all of this was happening. He certainly was not in Featherfall this night. "Who is she really, Lucas?" he whispered to him. "What kind of singer gets that sort of treatment?"

Lucas sighed and rolled his eyes and whispered back. "We should wait until we have more privacy or can do proper introductions, Akakios. This is not the sort of thing to be whispering about at the dinner table."
"She's not a queen, is she?" he scoffed, still whispering.
"No, but to these people she might as well be."

The thought of her being this province's High Lady still had not crossed his mind as the vampire looked to the door she'd disappeared through. She certainly had his full attention now, this mystery Lady Dvorak. Even if she was some admired nobleman's daughter he was very interested to know why the people here seemed to make such a fuss over her.

Straightening in his seat and drinking from his new glass of wine as he pondered her, Akakios studied her adviser closely. He was certainly interested in them now, but especially the woman. If she was important, then it only served as a further challenge for him to feed from her. Perhaps he could cause a little scandal in his time here. That was certainly an exciting thought. "Ro'or, is it?" he addressed him finally. "Is your lady always so vivacious?" he wondered, a confident smile there and mirth dancing in his eyes.

"Where ever did she learn to speak the Old language?" he asked in his native tongue, curious if he could speak it as well. Lucas shot him a warning glance that he noticed but decided to ignore.

"She has always been a spirited one, even since she was small. There is a flame within her that it seems none can quench and a heart to match as well," Ro'or replied, glancing off in the direction his sister had left in.

The sound of the old tongue once more being uttered brought him about face in a matter of seconds though. He felt the smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth even as he worked on formulating his response.

His tones were darker than Amleah's own lilting speech pattern. Where she made the old tongue sing, he made it purr. He returned Akakios' answer with it, feeling the power that came with speaking such a heavily-rooted in ancient magic, tongue.

"She learned it from her mother just as most everyone in Tirial does. Unlike what they seem to teach your lot in Featherfall, here in Tirial all children come to learn the Old Language. We take great pride in our ancient history. And by the by it's Lord Dvorak to you, Reolaras."

All in Tirial? Akakios was stunned and his eyes showed it for the briefest moment before he turned to glare at Lucas. How dare he never divulge such important information! How dare he, when he knew of how his friend had suffered and wallowed in sadness for how little chances he had to converse in the language. Lucas pointedly ignored him, though, not wanting to get into such a distasteful argument in front of important people, and Akakios, recognizing it, decided to let it go for now.

"I suppose outside of Tirial it is rare to know another familiar with it, Ro'or," Akakios shrugged, refusing to acknowledge the title though he did take note of it. It was odd, he thought, that a lady would call her husband both adviser and chaperone but not dear or otherwise acknowledge the relationship. "Unfortunately my "lot" is rare in Featherfall. I am the last of my kin." He glanced to the door Amleah had disappeared through and smirked confidently as he brought his attention back to the man across from him. "Perhaps I should think about planting roots in this lively province instead," he chuckled, finally bringing himself back into Common.

Ro'or took a sip of his wine, savoring the bittersweetness of it sliding down his throat. "As are we," he murmured back, amused by the nobleman's excuses. It further entertained him that Akakios sought to try and perturb him with innuendos of making a move a Tirialian woman that could quite possibly be his own sister. He had no doubts though he could deter the other man should there be any real threat to Amleah's virture.

"Take care where you plant those roots of yours Reolaras. I think you would be quite disappointed to find some of our weather to be cold and our soils to already be barren of the virtues that make all living things grow."

The lighthearted chuckles around them didn't unsettle the vampire. They really only encouraged him, for he knew that the joke would be on them at some point for not realizing what he was capable of sooner. It truly seemed that nobody besides this man, the host, and hostess were even aware of who he, let alone his station or title.

A gentle, patronizing smile graced his lips as he observed the man across from him. "I am accustomed to cold and all the difficulties that come with it. It makes things more difficult, but what's life without a bit of a challenge now and then, right?"

"I would be wary if I were you to not plow in another man's field or you will find your neighbor and his wife far from friendly," Ro'or cautioned casually. I do not recommend uprooting yourself given your success in your own province. There are many crops here that have yet to achieve their full potential and it would not due to have them smothered by the smog of incoming industry."

The advisor chuckled to himself though, donning his own condescending smile. "Lucky for me though I already have a firm grasp on the proper care of our rugged land's vast agricultural potential. I am not so sure you could say the same though given the north's gentler climate."

"It is far from just my own province," he chuckled, highly amused and sure now that this man knew nothing of who he was. "But I will certainly take care to tread lightly while I am here.

"Now, if you'll excuse me," Akakios muttered, rising from his chair even as Lucas shot him a stern look. He was not about to let him tie him to the table when he didn't want to be there. He was bored, plain and simple, and he knew how long and slow these dinners could be. Slipping out of the room he was now on the hunt for Miss Dvorak, as he now knew her, and he was sure she would be far more entertaining than the rest of her company if he could intercept her.

Ro'or was greatly amused by the entire conversation. While, his persona perhaps was meant to feel threatened, he felt delighted by Akakios' impending departure. True to form though, he pressed his lips into a thin line and raised a thin brow in challenge before looking away to drink his wine.

"The viper is headed your way, my dove."
"Had all the fun without me, brother?"
"Never dearest, it has only just begun."

The High Lady sighed at the thought, feeling somewhat weary and disappointed when she had so desperately hoped for something more of the evening than more political games. As she heard the aforementioned gentleman approach though, she placed her hand over her breast and leaned back against the wall, allowing her feelings to show on her face as she let loose another disgruntled sigh.

Akakios walked at an easy pace, not wishing at all to appear too eager. Losing his night's entertainment too quickly would spoil his fun just as anything. He was patient and calm in his search and it did not take him long to find her leaning against a wall and alone. It was almost too perfect, but it would not do for him to take a meal in such a boring, easy way.

"Lady Dvorak," he greeted gently, a small smirk there as he approached her, taking note of the hand upon her chest. "Are you not feeling well?" he guessed, wondering if she had weak nerves and was upset from the 'argument' as he'd seen it.

She gasped as if startled as she tried to compose herself, patting at her cheeks and eyes so as to not ruin her makeup. "I am fine thank you. It is very kind of you to check up on me," Amleah replied softly. "I hope that my dear Ro'or has not offended you in my absence. He can be quite the," she paused with a hissing inhalation before shaking her head. "He can be something rather unpleasant when he wants to be. I apologize for his behavior and thereby mine as well. I have been," shly Amleah looked away as her voice began to sound choked up and she raised a hand to rub nervously at her neck, "very impolite. Perhaps my adviser was right and I have had too much wine this evening. I am afraid I am not myself."

His dark eyes flickered to her hands as they were brought to her face. The lack of a ring left him with the comfortable assumption that she was unmarried at least, though he did not doubt a woman so beautiful might have suitors or even a betrothed. Her age seemed fairly undeterminable to him, but he was certain that information would be coaxed out in time. "Ah, now that I would believe," he chuckled, distractedly brushing his coat even as his words were carefully chosen. He did not yet realize the extent of their relationship and he did not wish to draw insult to the man if he truly was as close to her as he seemed.

"I assure you, though, I am not offended in the least, Lady Dvorak," he told her sincerely with a gentle bow of his head, out of respect for her thoughtfulness instead of her unknown station. "Does that mean you will be retiring for the night?" he asked, trying not to let his excitement show over the prospect of having an excuse to never enter the dining room again.

"I am afraid such a luxury is not available to me at this time. As guest of honor, I would not dare insult my hosts so disrespectfully by disappearing when they have put this all together on my behalf. Besides as I do recall a certain rather near gentleman begged my favor on behalf of our host to sing for a private party, did he not? I would hate to disappoint," she teased with a gentle smirk and a bat of her long eyelashes.

He nodded in acknowledgement, listening carefully to her choice of words. "That he did. I only hope it is not too taxing. Please forgive my intrusion," Akakios apologized, bowing slightly for taking up her time before he turned to leave her to her own devices. "I'll give you your privacy."

"You are not intruding," she hurriedly called after him, even going so far as to rest hand upon the crook of his elbow. "Please," Amleah begged demurely, "don't go! If anything I find your presence refreshing."

She pulled away as shyly as she had reached for him and shook her head. "Forgive me, that was silly of me. I don't mean to keep you. It's just you've been so kind. I can't tell you how exhausting it is to be on near constant display for the masses. Ball after ball, it quickly is becoming a blur and while Ro'or promised a special night tonight, I must admit I find it quite lacking." Amleah smiled with not mirth and bowed her head sadly.

Yes, that was all the assurance he needed. She chased. Even if only to stay his retreat, but she did stop him. He turned quietly to listen to her complaints, surprised and baffled that such a woman would tolerate lacking in any part of her life. There must have been something keeping her, but all he desired for the moment was to feed upon her unhappiness, to fuel what thoughts of temptation he'd hoped he'd been planting all evening.

"Surely I have not been a part of that. I'm sorry, though," he frowned, grimacing in distaste at the thought of the vile man in the dining room. "Your Ro'or seems a miserable fellow if I must be honest. Have you given thought to cutting him loose?" he asked openly, certainly thinking she could do better even if she had some emotional hang-up with him and having no issue voicing that opinion aloud. To him she was merely a favored musician and the assumed ward of a man who punished her for his own unhappiness. "Perhaps find one who will not leave your evening lacking?"

Amleah smiled at him with pleasure. "On the contrary you have made the evening worth while. I fear without your presence I would have retired for the evening with a migraine. Your presence makes for a far more enjoyable evening and I thank you for that." She smiled of to the side, her lashes fluttering slightly before her face seemed to fall with her thoughts.

"As for Ro'or," she sighed, shaking her head, "I could no more cut him loose than I could cut off my own hand. That is a very bold thing for you to suggest," the High Lady continued, raising her head to meet his gaze. "Whom would you suggest then to replace him? Yourself perhaps?" She offered him a knowing smirk. "As entertaining as that might be for a time I'm afraid it wouldn't last. You do not belong to this province as I to it. I could no more leave it than I could leave Ro'or. Such is the way of things I suppose," the young woman claimed quietly with a hint of sadness.

Reaching out invitingly for his hand she continued in a mischievous and hopeful tone, "perhaps though we could have this night? I find that I would very much like to see the night through with you. That is of course if I have not already insulted and driven you away milord."

Still not realizing what she was to the province nor whom she was Akakios could only frown at the emotional chains that so obviously bound her. It was truly such a shame that such a beauty be so unhappy and unfulfilled when there was so much more to the world than one single province. He had nothing constructive to offer concerning her choice so he let it lie, there was no reason to prolong something that seemed to so obviously bother her as a topic of conversation.

That she reached out to him again was encouraging, at least, the proud smirk returning as he seized her hand with his own. "A whole night? You spoil me, Lady Dvorak," the vampire murmured, the curl of his lips quite predatory as he bent to press a kiss to her hand and then another to her cheek to seal it as a promise.

He hovered there, though, lingering far longer than any proper gentleman ever should have as he drank in the sight of the slight, milky column of her throat. It was so delicate, so easily damaged or broken and yet so easily accessible to such a damned creature as he.

"We could even slip away now," he suggested throatily, his hand firmly grasping hers with no intention of letting her go. Caught up in his weaknesses, though, Akakios was oblivious to how long they'd already been away from the other attendees. He was completely unaware that the host and hostess of the event had already exited the hall and were searching for their guest of honor.

"Lady Dvorak!" came the distant call of the lady of the house, the sound leaving the vampire gasping and refocusing on the present situation and how close he'd been to latching on to his prey.

Straightening, Akakios loosened his hold upon her hand so that he was not so nearly crushing it as he cast a curious glance over his shoulder. The sound of hurried footfalls approaching them caused him to drop her hand altogether with one last, regretful glance to the High Lady's throat.

She stilled as he pressed a kiss to her cheek, her lashes fluttering lower as a shadow of a smile tugged at her lips. With her brother literally close in mind, Amleah felt safer than most women against a gentleman's private affections. After all, she was never truly alone. However, that is not to say that she did not recognize the predatory quality of the nobleman before her. Although she could not exactly put her finger on it she did see that he was different than other men who sought her attention. It felt as if he was hunting her in a way not so different than she had seen her own twin hunt others in his pursuit of greater and grander. She knew then not only to be keen but that their game included a most worthy adversary.

Amleah sighed softly in put-upon disappoint at the call of her name, her head turning to the side and her lashes fluttering as if to gather herself once more. Her hand was dropped from the man's grasp moments before the lady of the house rounded the corner and came upon them.

"There you are, Lady Dvorak!" the woman exclaimed, clapping her hands together. "We thought we lost you." Amleah gave the woman the small, bored smile of the aristocracy before replying, "and Akakios was kind enough to find me. He was just escorting me back. I hope that I have not ruined your evening my dear and that you can forgive me."

"Oh no, no my lady! Please think nothing of it! We all know how jealous men can be about their shinning ladies," the older woman simpered, offering Akakios a wink. "But come, come the select guests have already gathered in the parlor to hear you! Oh I must say it truly is an honor. I can barely contain my excitement!"

Amleah nodded along politely as she was escorted by their hostess, her arm linked with Akakios' by her own design. The High Lady purposely maintained the required distance of etiquette as she allowed him to lead her. However, she did manage to offer him a gentle squeeze of the forearm before they entered the small room where not only where their host was awaiting them but also her brother, a few of the more distinguished guests, and the man Amleah was nearly certain had been seated beside Akakios and conversing at length with him.

Had he been a younger man Akakios might have been embarrassed to be found out, but he was more agitated than anything that his potential meal had been ruined. Those emotions remained firmly locked away, though, as he smiled politely to their hostess as though nothing had happened at all.

He used the moment she turned away to recover and collect himself and flash a smirk at the unknown High Lady. He would have his chance later, he was sure.

Akakios led Amleah confidently, quite proud that she'd wanted them linked so badly still. He glanced down to her for the squeeze before they stepped in as if it were nothing at all and he was not making an entrance with the guest of honor. Looking about the room he saw many of the same people that had been gathered near their head of the table at dinner. One particular individual caught his eye, though, and the vampire firmly made eye contact with Ro'or.

He gave a short pat to Amleah's arm while maintaining it, leaning to whisper a few words of promise at her ear to meet her later before releasing her to her duties. As soon as he was free, though, a familiar arm was swiftly yanking him away from the High Lady as a light smack connected to his well-cushioned shoulder.

Lucas leaned around his friend with the an apologetic smile, ushering the vampire lord away towards their pair of empty seats as if he was scolding a naughty child. "Please forgive him, Your Ladyship. He is not from the west and seems to have forgotten his good manners upstairs with his luggage. Again. My sincerest apologies for his behavior."

The younger noble shot his friend a no-nonsense glare and while Akakios did not always abide by Lucas's warnings he thought better of challenging him in front of so many others. A scene was not what he wished to cause when he had intentions of sneaking away with the mysterious beauty once her obligations were realized.

Akakios allowed himself to be herded and seated properly. He did not understand the reason for the few snickers and bit of muffled whispering he heard from the other guests but he did not trouble himself over it. For all he knew they were simply jealous that he'd managed some private time with their special guest, though he'd yet to realize just how special she was to her people.

"You're despicable," Lucas hissed at his ear, the harsh words only earning him a smile from the vampire. "Have you no shame at all? You're going to be thrown out if you aren't careful. And me by association," he warned. Akakios merely grunted in acknowledgment, not truly wishing to engage his friend in any heated conversation over something he saw as silly.

Why should anyone care that he sought a bit of fun with a singer?

Amleah smiled knowingly at his words before allowing her attention to alight upon his companion with a small amount of amusement. She even tittered slightly at his jest before she was forcefully moved away by her dark twin. Ro'or leaned down to his sister's ear, drawing her in close as if trying to reconcile with her when he was instead commending her on her little play-acting.

"You have done quite well, little sister," he whispered into her ear.
"He is not what he seems."
"Indeed."
"He wishes to meet with me later."
"Proceed with caution," he directed, "I'll intervene if necessary."
"As you wish," Amleah responded demurely but a bit louder, stepping away from him to face the room as the lady of the house hurried to hush them and gain their attention. Ro'or slid his arm down to wrap loosely but possessively about her waist.

"Ladies, Gentlemen please may I have your attention," the woman called, continuing only once the room had fallen quiet. "Now as you all know our ball this evening has been held in honor of our esteemed guests Lord and Lady Dvorak." The woman motioned towards the couple who nodded politely in acknowledgement as a small amount of clapping echoed about the room. "Now, what you may not be aware of is that the lady of the hour has been so gracious as to accept an invitation to sing for us this evening. I'm sure you all remember her lovely voice at the induction ceremony, right?"

Many of the guests murmured in delight at the news. "Now then without anymore fanfare, let's give her ladyship newly-elected High Lady the respect and attention she deserves." The clapping in the room grew louder as Amleah smiled warmly and give a small curtsy before drawing away from her brother whose eyes remained firmly upon Akakios.

"Thank you Lord and Lady Wechsler and company. I am most honored by your kindness and hope to serve this province proud, and not only with my singing," she jested, much to everyone's amusement. "The song I shall sing for you tonight is a very old one called The Rose and The Sword," Amleah stated, knowing that it would entice the man interested in her more to hear her sing in the old tongue.

After taking a deep, calming breath the High Lady let the notes slowly and softly flow off her tongue like dew of a blade of grass then faster and louder as the passion of her singing and the words consumed her. Amleah gave it her all as she sang without accompaniment and still managed to captivate the room into pure silence and stillness with the beauty of her song that spoke of pain and loss, of bittersweet love and longing.

When at last it came to an end though, her eyes fluttering open it was to a room that echoed expressions of awe and wonder. She even spotted a few tears in the corner of some eyes as she surveyed the room with a serious expression. Amleah knew that the song was not well-known among the nobles as it had fallen out of popularity long before she was born but it was still one that she had loved her mother to sing in her youth.

Her brother's strengthening touch at the small of her back drew her back to the present though and allowed her to look away with a shy smile that broke the spell about the room as guests clapped and stood to crowd her once more in a clamor for attention. She answered every question as expected of her but her dark stranger was never far from her thoughts as she searched for him out of the corner of her eye.

Akakios turned amused eyes upon Ro'or for his blatant staring. It seemed clear enough to him that Lord Dvorak was not pleased about his interest towards his fairer half, but it was the sort of jealousy he was used to. He'd been through similar rituals enough to care very little what was personally thought about him or whatever rifts he assumed he was exacerbating between the assumed couple.

There was very little that surprised the vampire anymore, but Lady Wechsler's announcement about the woman who'd caught his attention had his eyes flickering to land on the one who was to perform. The briefest look of panic crossed his eyes as he swallowed, a little nervous for the first time that night. Honestly, for the first time in recent memory. No wonder Lucas had been so antsy. He should have known there was something more to her.

Glancing to meet the proud "I told you so" smirk of his friend the nobleman glowered briefly before Amleah drew his attention again with her use of the old tongue and the particular song she would be singing for them. It was one he knew well and had a good bit of nostalgia towards for its popularity in his younger years.

Those feelings did not spark the same emotion from him as the rest of the room, but he could certainly acknowledge that she held a talent of rare quality and natural beauty. His entire being was filled with an unusual warmth, his expression changing subtly from stoic to one of pride and admiration for its duration.

The pair looked on as she was swarmed once more, patient and willing to wait for the chance to speak more privately with her. They clapped politely for her performance and Akakios turned to whisper at Lucas's ear. "My friend you have harmed me terribly by not making the presence of a High Lady more clear. I'm afraid I've soundly embarrassed myself to her already," he told him, though he certainly did not think his chances with her ruined. Far from it.

"Perhaps your ego should have wondered what sort of guest was more important than yourself or I," Lucas pointed out, chuckling as he tilted his head to cast a brief, admiring glance at Amleah.

"I thought it was your job to inform and not mine to wonder," the vampire jested.

Once the crowd began to thin the lesser nobles were bid their well wishes and farewells as they left them to return to the main hall for their gathering. Akakios leaned back to lounge relaxed and comfortable in his chair as his eyes trained upon the younger noble, watching as he rose to approach the High Lady before his dark eyes lingered upon the woman herself.

"What a beautiful performance, Lady Dvorak," Lucas praised warmly, bowing his head briefly out of respect. "You are so talented, and dare I say I've never once heard a song that could match yours."

It was a great relief, though she did not show it, when the majority of the guests returned to the party and left the High Lady in a more tranquil room. The appearance of Lucas drew a true smile to her lips as she greeted him eagerly. "Many thanks, Mister Renwick. You flatter me with such unwarranted praise. I am glad you were able to enjoy it though, that is a great relief." Amleah smiled, leaning in conspiratorially before continuing. "I do believe Mister Renwick that that formal introduction you were wishing for can be arranged now." She giggled slightly behind her hand, her eyes darting over his shoulder to where Akakios remained. "Unless of course you no longer wish to do the honors."

Her reminder caused a flash of realization across his face and the nobleman turned to follow her gaze. He gestured for Akakios to join them with the most sickeningly-sweet smile the vampire had ever seen from him. Lucas was enjoying himself, though perhaps a little too much at his own expense for his social floundering that evening.

"Of course, Your Ladyship, long overdue as I'm sure you're already quite well acquainted. This is Akakios Reolaras, my business partner and dear friend," Lucas introduced, his hand outstretched towards his friend as the vampire rose to approach them at last.

"A pleasure, My Lady," he greeted, unable to hide the mirth from his eyes despite how polite his smile was. The taller man bowed to her deeply from the waist as though they hadn't been joined for the better part of the evening already. Perhaps he could make up for lost ground on the formalities if she really saw them as so important. Somehow he doubted it, though, if a High Lady was willing to bestow her people with song.

Lifting his eyes to her dark-haired twin he was unable to hide the smirk twitching at his lips. "Lord Dvorak," he greeted gently, bowing his head in the much smaller display.

Amleah smiled knowingly, her eyes crinkling with her silent mirth as she leaned back into her stuff brother. Ro'or only raised his chin at the greeting, a look of smug satisfaction clearly displayed across his own features. "In your absence, Mister Renwick here was just telling me all about your business ventures together," he began, addressing Akakios without so much as a 'how-do-you-do.'

"Would your reason for coming here tonight then be that you are looking to expand your holdings into Tirial? Or are you searching for stock to suit your personal tastes? I cannot imagine why else you would travel so far for a lesser nobles ball unless of course it was on the off-chance of meeting our precious High Lady whom you seem to have known nothing of."

Aforementioned High Lady placed a restraining hand on her brother's chest, looking up at him in a silent plea to behave. "Ro'or dear you're beginning to sound quite rude. Please don't insult my new friends. They're my only company for this evening now that you've scared everyone else off," she teased, causing the other man to look down at her and kiss her forehead. "I do hope you can forgive him Mister Renwick and Mister Reolaras," she apologized smoothly, smiling at Lucas indulgent glimmer and a slight rolling of her eyes.

"As her ladyship commands," Ro'or murmured softly though there was a knowing glint to his eyes still as he met Akakios' gaze and pulled his twin against his chest. "Gentlemen perhaps if you are not opposed and as the lady has noted already I have seemed to scare off her other company, would you both be so kind as to join us for a drink and a sit down? Unless of course you are quick to wanting to return to the dancing and gossiping?"

Akakios was unfazed by Ro'or's blatant rudeness and blunt questioning. He wasn't required to answer any of it, after all, and a quick glance to Lucas confirmed to him that his friend had not revealed all that much to the Tirialian man.

"It's no trouble at all, really," Lucas assured her, smiling kindly as he shot an amused look Ro'or's way. So long as he didn't anger the vampire he thought they might get along quite well. Both had a gift for banter, it seemed, and Lucas was quite comfortable sitting back to let them hash it out. It seemed the adviser would be winning this round.

Akakios smiled politely enough as he watched the exchange. Frankly he was surprised Ro'or was not being any worse to him after all the time he'd spent with his assumed lady, province leader or otherwise. "That would be wonderful," Akakios agreed. As much as he hated the thought of consuming anything in their presence he knew he could handle wine quite well. He'd done so at the table so what harm could a bit more do?

"I certainly don't mind. A bit of a rest from all that would be nice," the younger noble sighed, smiling goodnaturedly as he glanced to the door. "Is there somewhere more...private we should go, then?"

"Excellent," Amleah declared as she took control of the conversation and looped her arm with Lucas' arm, "our hostess has been kind enough to allow me access to one of her private sitting rooms during my stay here should I feel the need to conduct state business or retire from the rigors of my position. I believe it should suit us all quite nicely at the moment. Shall we?" she more commanded rather than asked the group before allowing the young nobleman on her arm to walk with her.

Ro'or nodded to Akakios as if to politely invite him to follow first but there was none of his sister's warmth in the gesture. She on the other hand decided to ignore the silently warring pair and instead turned her attentions to Lucas. "Now Mister Renwick it seems that while I have spent a great deal of my evening with your companion I have not been as fortunate as to speak long with you. I dearly hope you do not mind sharing the honor of your company with me." Her expression was that of innocent worry as she looked at him with wide eyes and a slightly furrowed brow.

Lucas led her effortlessly enough, quite familiar with the layout of their hosts' home already. He paid no mind to the presence of the vampire falling into step to walk directly behind them and instead turning a beaming smile to the High Lady for the special attention she deemed to bestow upon him in the moment. "I would be delighted, of course," he assured her, reaching quite comfortably to rest his hand upon her arm.

"Though I assure you it is I who has the honor of your company," he chuckled, ignoring the sudden, barely audible growl of the man behind him. "I hope you've had a pleasant evening thus far, though. I promise I only hope to improve upon it."

"What do you know of our business?" Akakios finally asked Ro'or bluntly. "Truthfully Mister Renwick is quite the distracted little chatterbox so I cannot even begin to assume I know a thing he's possibly told you."

The High Lady chuckled, leaning into the man holding her arm as she did. "Now, that is a high order to live up to. I certainly hope you can make good of your promise, Mister Renwick. Improvement on an already delightful evening would be quite a feat. Then again you seem like a delightful individual yourself. I think we may have quite a bit in common actually that can spark some even more enjoyable conversation." With a slight glance behind herself to her brother and Akakios she then leaned in to whisper conspiratorially to Lucas. "I do hope my Ro'or has not grilled you in my absence. I know he does not always have the gentlest of dispositions."

Meanwhile, Ro'or himself remained unaffected by the other nobleman's brusque attitude and instead focused his amusement and attentions upon his sister sashaying ahead of them. "Women are quite fickle don't you think?" he commented nodding towards Amleah as she leaned closer to Lucas giggling and whispering like a little bird. "Always flitting about from man to man, never staying resting for long."

He shook his head as if brushing the thought aside. "Now, I don't think that's a fair assessment of your business partner. I found Mister Renwick to be far from distracted. On the contrary he seemed to be a rather focused and concise individual in both manner and speech unlike someone else who has seemed to have taken an interest in things that can belong to him."

"Oh, no, not too terribly," Lucas chuckled, glancing over his shoulder at her darker twin. His eyes quickly returned to her, though, twinkling for the challenge. "I am curious what you think we have in common, Your Ladyship. Besides, of course, enjoying pleasant company. Have you...heard much of me, then?" he asked, remembering her implication at the dinner table.

Akakios chose not to comment on his observations. It was bad taste to voice his opinions, after all, with a lady right in front of them and very clearly within earshot. "He does that when he's serious," the vampire sighed, shaking his head before giving Ro'or an appraising look. "I can only guess he holds you in high regard for some reason or another." His eyes flicked to Amleah, only to imply that it was not that Lucas respected him but his relationship with the High Lady.

He did take notice of the way he seemed to speak of possession again. He was curious how honest Lucas had been about him or if this Ro'or was just fishing with gossip. "I came to your lovely Tirial as a favor to Mister Renwick. He seemed to feel I would do well to meet a few people here and- Well, I believe introductions have been properly made now." His lips curled in a smirk, eyes still wandering to Amleah with a vague glimmer of hunger.

"That is excellent to hear then," she replied softly. "I am ashamed to admit that I am afraid I have only heard bits and pieces in passing of you. I am looking forward however to hearing more directly from the man of mystery himself. That is of course," Amleah added with lowered lashes and a coy blush, "if said gentleman is willing to share."

"Yes," Ro'or replied to Akakios, dryly, "some reason or another." He had no missed the jab but took it in stride with a pinch of amusement rather than linger on it. "And do you find you agree with Mister Renwick's assessment then? Was it worth your while to travel to our humble little province?"

"Oh don't be ashamed!" Lucas laughed softly and patted her arm gently with a quick wink.

"It speaks to the quality of the company that you keep if they are not huge gossips about me. I am of little importance compared to a fair lady of the ruling class." It was out of the question in his mind that he was simply not well-known, even in Tirial which was so distant from his own homeland. "I would certainly be willing to share. I only wonder what it is you would like to know. Did anything in particular pique your interest?" he crooned.

"Of course. He always chooses well," Akakios murmured, eyes lingering on the back of the High Lady's head and sweeping down the column of her neck, "and this is a beautiful province. Though...I would not call it humble." He finally broke his spell to glance at the man at his side. "At least not all of her people... Perhaps only the ones that matter."

He waved a hand dismissively as he followed Lucas through the open doorway he was leading them through to the promised parlor.

The High Lady blushed lightly at his touch, looking down and to the side to hide it before she was able to compose herself enough to answer. "Or perhaps they're just very poor informants," she quipped back with a knowing smile. "As for the rest well," Amleah sidled her head side to side slightly as they entered the room, "I suppose you'll just have to figure that out now won't you?"

Ro'or waited until everyone was inside before following last and closing the door quietly behind them all to afford them the desired privacy. He waited stiffly until the only lady in the room delicately alighted upon a sofa before seating himself in high-backed chair within reach of her.

"Well that being said," he continued, brushing aside Akakios's earlier comments that lingered darkly towards his fair twin, "perhaps you can discuss more in-depth your business then as it seems I only have been informed of bits and pieces of it by your Mister Renwick." Ro'or bobbed his head in acknowledgement to the aforementioned gentleman before looking to Akakios intently.

"That's all fine and well with me, I do love a good challenge. I would be honored, but mind I'm not all that good at guessing," he admitted with a playful pout. "Do forgive me if it takes some time."

Once they were inside Akakios attempted to brush his friend aside so that he might take the remaining space beside the High Lady but was quickly shut out with an over-friendly smile from the halfling, the light-haired man slipping past the vampire to take a seat with her. It left him with no other choice than to find another seat and as he settled into a lone chair he was unable to hide the fire in his eyes for being turned away without so much as an apology.

"My friend here has sizeable holdings in trade and shipping. Imports especially, though it is costly business," Akakios offered, nodding to Lucas who only met his gaze with an even, unaffected look. "Our dealings are a bit shared in that regard. Or at least- We cross paths often enough for it to matter.

"My work lies in the brokering of slaves mostly," he stated plainly, already conditioned by centuries of reactions to know he could handle whatever might have been sprung at him from the pair for owning to that fact. There was no reason to lie or beat around the bush with people that Lucas seemed to believe would be important to their work, but he was not naive and knew that there were definitely varying degrees of acceptance across the kingdom.

Lucas hummed in acknowledgement, accepting Akakios's words as a fair assessment of their work. "He gives me too much credit. I just invest, but he prefers a more hands-on approach," he offered.

"You needn't worry so, Mister Renwick," Amleah replied sweetly, "I am sure that in time you will come to find that I am well accustomed with the virtue of patience." Her gaze drifted from one man's face to the next as she noted with veiled amusement the silent battle for a place beside her from the two gentlemen.

Amleah's attention lingered further though on Akakios as she listened with rapt attention to his discussion with her twin regarding his business. The mention of slaves while having no outward affect upon Ro'or, instantly caused a reaction in the High Lady as she dove into the conversation without waiting for a queue from her darker half.

"Exactly how hands-on is your approach, Lord Reolaras?" she queried with a curious tilt of her head and a keen gaze that spoke of her intelligence beyond the facade of a lighthearted and carefree noblewoman.

Ro'or in turn waved a servant over to give a quiet order for the desired drinks and refreshments so as to contain his own amusement. He too had seen the looks between the noblemen. It was not the first time men had vied for his sister's smiles and it would certainly be far from the last. If anything seeing that she would be a possible dividing factor for the two men only served to make him more pleased. He decided to not wade in immediately as Amleah took charge of the conversation. Few were ever truly gifted with the opportunity to discuss such potentially delicate matters with the High Lady of Tirial as most public outings had been presided over with meaningless banter and fluff, completely lacking any true politics. If she wished to discuss such things with the two gentlemen in the room then far be it for him to stop her when it would suit his own desires to know more about the outsiders.

For a moment the vampire actually took on a look of surprise, eyes widening as he glanced quickly between the High Lady and Lucas before narrowing them at the gentleman. He'd gotten him into it and offered up information he hadn't been particularly eager to share with her or her advisor. Now he couldn't even brush it off to him with her being so direct.

He didn't even look to Amleah when he answered, eyes burning into his friend even as the light-haired noble smiled innocently enough. Akakios knew better. "He speaks too highly of me," he tried to assure her, a faint, fake smile gracing his lips that didn't quite reach his eyes. Of course, he ignored that Lucas hadn't spoken highly of him at all.

"I simply handle the paperwork. Finances and all that. Boring stuff, Lady Dvorak." He paused briefly in thought before continuing, "In my younger days I did handle a bit of the...conditioning. But that is handled elsewhere now, except for the few personal slaves I take in." That sounded pleasant enough, didn't it? He thought so.

Amleah's eyes closed briefly in disbelieving amusement as she smiled at Akakios. "Now I find that hard to believe. If anything I would say that Mister Renwick here understated based on my short time with you Lord Reolaras." She smiled winsomely at him with her eyes dancing with affectionate mirth. "Younger days," the High Lady giggled as she accepted her drink from the attending servant, "how far behind those must be," she jested, relaxing back against the cushions. "I'd be interested to hear more about your business Lord Reolaras if you're willing to share. I must admit I've always had a bit of curiosity towards the running of such affairs."

"Have you now?" Ro'or muttered under his breath as he gulped down the dark amber liquid in his glass and accepted a second in return.

Akakios flashed an indulgent smile, amused but not surprised by her apparent disbelief of the sincerity of his claim. He was taken aback by her eagerness for more information, though. The vampire blinked quickly, not quite able to grasp why a lady of her position would be so interested in such a business.

He watched as drinks were distributed, silently taking the glass offered to him but simply holding it in his hand instead of drinking any of it. Swirling the liquid gently in the glass he looked to his companion thoughtfully, curious if he was privy to the High Lady's curiosity, but Lucas's eyes simply smiled at him over the rim of his own glass.

"I'm surprised a lady of such...qualities would be interested to hear such a thing," he admitted on the tail of her advisor's comment, smiling warmly as he lifted his eyes to meet her own. "Without being overly crass... It's a bit like handling delicate livestock. But they are so intelligent." The vampire chuckled privately, quite unable to help himself.

"I mostly deal in humans. Occasionally something more rare will come into my possession but," -he shrugged dismissively- "it is the same as any other business, no? Make profit off of what your customers desire to own. So that is all I do. Give them what they want, simple as that."

Akakios sighed softly in quiet contentment, finally lifting the glass to take a small sip of the drink he'd been playing with.

The noblewoman's eyes crinkled at the corners with silent laughter. "I have found in my experience that it pays well to have a bit of an understanding of the businesses and happenings not only within your own province but outside of it as well. You never know what opportunities or follies for that matter might await you should you fail to look beyond your own front door." Amleah smiled in an almost self-depreciating way while taking a sip of her wine. "Perhaps it's rather unconventional of a High Lady to take an interest in such things but I must admit I never did much enjoy the conventional."

"And what if the customer's wants," Ro'or cut in, "exceeds your capabilities?" The look he gave Akakios was one of challenge but his question only caused Amleah to roll her eyes and huff in disgust. Instead she smiled to Lucas sweetly while slightly raising her glass to him in a quiet toast.

Lucas smiled softly as he watched them (but mostly her.) He was surprised to hear such simple words of wisdom from someone who seemed so young. He wouldn't dare ask her age in mixed company but it did leave him quite curious if she was truly so young or aged beyond her appearance.

After raising his glass to mirror her gesture the younger noble tore his eyes from the High Lady long enough to do the same towards his friend, wanting to encourage him to behave normally and not turn his nose up at their offered drinks if he did not wish to reveal himself fully to these people.

Akakios scowled but nodded in acknowledgement of the gesture, raising his hand to tip his glass slightly before finally raising it to his lips to take a few delicate sips. He was amused by Ro'or's question, though, chuckling lightly after he'd swallowed. "I've never encountered such a thing," he answered simply, confidently. "If I don't have what they want I can acquire it. Nothing is beyond my grasp."

The vampire smiled hungrily, eyes flashing briefly in amusement as he glanced between the unknown twins, lingering on Amleah before Lucas noticed him and shot him a warning look. He wasn't sure what that was for, but he thought perhaps he'd been a bit too rude for his tastes. Perhaps it was his desire to be social, but Akakios still never understood why good friendly relations were so important to the fae. Business ones he surely understood but he didn't quite see their conversation as something related to business even though it happened to be the current topic of choice.

"How fortunate for your clients then," Ro'or returned. "Do you have many such exotic requests then? I'd imagine given the laws in this country that there would not be many businessmen who could provide such services. You must do quite well for yourselves too, gentlemen," he added nodding at Lucas as well in hopes of drawing him into conversation as well.

His sister on the other hand gave him a pointed glare, already sensing where the conversation was headed. For now she would hold her tongue but she did not relish the idea of her twin grilling the two men for his own pleasure. She sipped her wine in silence, draining the glass before asking for a second in spite of Ro'or's warning look of approval.

Lucas allowed his eyes to wander to the dark-haired man, smiling politely and nodding his head in acknowledgement. "Quite," he answered politely, seeing no reason to feign ignorance concerning their success among such company.

"Here and there," Akakios answered casually, shrugging slightly. "I must admit most do not have the imagination nor capital to make such requests, but they do happen." He looked to Lucas with a lazy smile. "And we are prepared when they come." The vampire didn't see the line of questioning as particularly invasive, at least so far, so he was still quite relaxed despite how he noted the lady of the room downing her drink faster than any of the men. He wasn't quite sure what that signaled, but he made a mental note to keep an eye on her for it.

Ro'or was not to be deterred however, not even by his own twin sister. "And how exactly if I may ask do you acquire such specimens? I can't imagine that you are able to come by them easily," he said almost as if his words were a challenging accusation. Unhappy with such implications, Amleah immediately squawked out her brother's name, nearly spilling her drink in the process as she spun to face him. She knew what he had meant and would not stand to have her guests accused of illegal activities so soon after meeting them.

"Enough," she demanded firmly yet in a quiet voice, her forefinger pointing at him warningly before she quickly turned to the two gentlemen, "don't answer that. You'll only encourage him." Without waiting to see their reactions though the High Lady turned back to her twin furiously. "These gentlemen are here to be social," she all but hissed, "not to undergo an interrogation by you, dearest." She smiled with a clenched jaw that was obviously forced but she refused to back down until he did.

With a roll of his eyes Ro'or simply shook his head. "As my lady commands. But you've had quite enough of that for one night," he added, trying to relinquish her hold upon her goblet. She could only glare in disapproval as a servant collected it from her at her brother's command and she was left empty-handed. The dark twin ignored her pout to settle deeper within his seat. "And what would you have talk of Amleah? Ribbons and lace?"

She smiled broadly then, having regained her composure. "No, I think you're the only one here who would take an interest in such things," Amleah replied spitefully while smoothing out her skirts. "Oops!" she feigned embarrassment, "was I not supposed to mention that?"

"That was cruel sister, dear," his words rang within her mind.
"You took my drink away," came her expected reply.

Both Akakios and Lucas were well-versed in traversing such dangerous territory. Ro'or had not even asked such a thing as directly as he could have. There were many things about their business that happened to be more or less "illegal" but their good name kept them on the up and up. The pair looked at each other silently, confirming with the other through eye contact alone how it would be handled. That came to an abrupt halt, however, at Amleah's sudden rage.

Lucas eyed her with concern, uncertain if the sudden fire from the High Lady was because of her drinks that evening or true passion about them not speaking of the subject anymore.

Akakios, however, struggled to hide his grin to finally see Ro'or get what he thought he deserved from her. He wasn't sure if he thought his relationship with the High Lady would protect him enough to ask such questions, but it was rare to encounter someone who both thought so much on their business and dared to voice their true questions about it. Briefly, the vampire wondered if the man was interested for personal reasons in their "exotics" as he called them. It wouldn't be a first for them.

Lucas winced, blinking violently against the scene before him. Things had changed so quickly between them that he truly wondered if the High Lady was frequently a problem when she was drinking. The fae was tense, but the vampire didn't even hide his cheerful laughter at the insults she slung.

Knowing he was probably risking being thrown out of the province altogether, Akakios stared at Ro'or once he'd quieted down, trying to catch his eye. "Lord Dvorak," he drawled, beckoning at him with a hook of his finger to try drawing his attention his way. "I'm sorry your lady is so disturbed by such topics. I must admit it is generally not one meant for delicate ears. I should have known and I do apologize for upsetting her so.

"That being said, I would be happy to discuss your interests privately if you wish. If there is something on your mind you do not wish to discuss with your lady present," -he shot Amleah a sympathetic, understanding look- "I would be happy to play audience to that. We might be able to come to an arrangement, hm?"

He let the offer remain in the air, shrugging casually and sipping at his wine fussily. Truthfully he thought he already had the dark-haired twin figured out. It would not be the first time a customer had approach their true desires aggressively.

Ro'or waves his hand dismissively. "Nonsense! We can discuss these things now. This setting is private enough. Amleah is just a flighty thing. Always overly worried about causing offence. See dearest," he all but condescended to his sister, "Lord Reolaras is perfectly fine. There was no need for your hysterical outburst." He chuckled and shook his head at Akakios as if to say 'women, right?'

Adjacent to him, the High Lady tensed before deflating slightly. For a brief moment she looked rather wounded at her brother's words before her mask flickered back into place. She instead resigned herself to be still and silent on the couch, expecting the three gentlemen to conduct their business talks as if she was nothing more than a living statue. Without her drink though she already found herself growing bored with nothing to pass her time.

Akakios met Ro'or's eyes with a brief smile but out of respect for her and her position he did look to Amleah as well. There his smile fell away and he bowed his head to her enough to acknowledge her complaints even though he fully intended to disobey them. "Quite fine," he finally agreed, rolling his shoulders slightly and sitting back to relax in his chair.

"So you wish to know how we acquire them," he mused, tapping his fingers along the arm of the chair. "It's usually quite a lengthy, expensive process but that just comes with the territory, hm? We hire out for...expeditions to foreign lands. They'll purchase what we need and ensure a safe journey back to our motherland. That's where Mister Renwick comes in." Akakios smiled briefly at Lucas, pointing lazily even with his glass still in his hand. "I handle our clients and he takes care of transport."

Lucas acknowledged Akakios briefly whenever he noticed him but his attention kept flickering to the High Lady beside him. He wasn't sure of Ro'or relationship with her either but it seemed far too much to him for even a dearly beloved person in her life to order her drink away. It was disrespectful to undermine her choice, no matter what it was.

He tapped at his own glass, feeling a little out of place with it suddenly but not wanting to disrespect her by offering her anything he'd already put his lips to. "I'll be just a moment," he finally excused himself, setting his own glass at a nearby table before standing to talk privately with a different servant since the one that had taken her glass was long gone.

They seemed hesitant to obey him, glancing first to Ro'or almost as if they'd been ordered to obey him and somehow the request from a neighbor was too much, but finally the young man nodded and stepped out. A few moments later he returned with a fresh glass of a much lighter wine and Lucas took it from him eagerly with a smile and a few quick words of praise and thanks.

Returning to his seat he picked up his original glass as well, holding one in each hand. He studied them, brow furrowing in contemplation before he sighed and turned to Amleah for help. "Oh dear," he whispered to her in a self-deprecating tone. "You know I really wanted to try this," -he raised the new glass to her in gesture- "but I just don't think I have the stomach for it tonight. Would you mind?"

Lucas moved his hand closer to her, adjusting his hold on the glass so it would be easy for her to take if she wanted it but also easy to withdraw and set aside if she did not and rejected it.

Amleah met Akakios's nod with a gaze of immovable, cold stone. She was far from enthused by his blatant act of defiance. That he would choose to follow the lead of the advisor rather than the High Lady who outranked all in the room including himself was rather off-putting. Knowing Ro'or's intentions though meant she was meant to bite her tongue and keep from making a mountain out of a molehill as her twin would call it.

"A rather profitable business then," Ro'or remarked. "What pray tell happens then on the off-chance that there is a sudden drought in your stock or even that your client has changed their mind after you have already acquired the product?" He took amusement at how easily the nobleman had followed him into opening up further despite his sister's obvious wishes to stay the conversation.

The only woman in the run glanced up at Lucas as he excused himself, nodding her head slightly in acknowledgement even as she struggled not to appear bored listening to all the business talk. Amleah knew her brother was searching for possible allies and enemies to the province and that right now he was having his fun but she aoat found herself longing for the boorish, gossiping women to distract her from the conversation. Part of her was concerned about finding out something unsavoury about the gentlemen as she had taken a bit of a liking to them and would be rather disappointed to learn they were able to be implicated of some crime.

When Lucas returned and spoke she looked at him first in surprise and then her warm smile returned to gently grace her features. Amleah looked from man to goblet and to man again in a curious manner. She certainly guessed at his true intentions and found herself honestly blushing at his display of discreet kindness. "How sad and unfortunate," she voiced quietly with concern. She hesitated in accepting the glass as she looked to him instead to allow him another chance to retract his offer. "Are you sure? I would not wish you to push yourself if you're feeling unwell Mister Renwick though I have heard the Zinfandel is quite a gentle wine. Perhaps though in the future we can meet again when your stomach is in better spirits and you can share some then?" She offered genuinely.

Akakios was surprised by Ro’or’s question, not really thinking it of any importance to someone who was neither involved in their business or purchasing from them. It seemed odd for him to care about the stock of their “products.”

He didn’t show any outward emotion on the matter, though, simply smiling in an understanding manner as if Ro’or had been very bright to wonder about that very thing. “Given the nature of what we provide our clients most are reasonable enough to understand that these things can take time. Those who are not so patient will either pay from their pockets for the inconvenience or do very little business with us again.”

The vampire paused briefly, eyes flickering to watch as Lucas left Amleah’s side, curious about what he was doing exactly but not enough to disrupt the conversation.

“It’s a relationship,” he finally simplified with a knowing smile. “Not a business or tradesman a client can just visit and make their demands to. If I’ve learned anything in this business it’s that involving people in anything takes time. Some of what we provide...you’d be hard-pressed to find it anywhere else. I find that’s usually what makes our clients remember their good manners,” he said with a goodnatured chuckle.

"If after all of that they are unhappy or don't want what they've asked for we have no problem with brokering a resale. I operate in absolutes, though. Payment for our contracts is fairly ironclad and doesn't depend on the client's happiness. Only the good health of their desired slaves upon delivery," Akakios explained. "They understand what they are signing up for, but it isn't unusual for some lonely gentlemen to think we offer complementary matchmaking services." He laughed genuinely at that, shaking his head in memory. It certainly wasn't something he ever wished to dabble in.

Lucas smiled at her words of concern but remained firm in his gesture so that she might not decline his offer out of politeness alone. He hoped she would only do so if she sincerely did not want to partake. “On the contrary I feel quite well, thank you,” he promised with a wink, not wanting her to think he was truly offering out of any feeling of sudden sickness.

Her own offer surprised him, though, his bright eyes widening slightly before calming to something much warmer. “I would be honored, Your Ladyship,” he murmured with a polite bow of his head. “At your earliest convenience.”

"I take it then you don't sell on the common auction block then. If I'm understanding correctly you'd define yourselves more as exclusive and private tradesmen? You must have a tale or two to tell then of the rather demanding nature of rich clients," Ro'or chuckled softly. "Some nobles can be so finnicky after all. Love matches," he scoffed shaking his head. "I do not envy you such a task. Keeping up with this one can be trying enough one's patience without adding in other clients." He jerked his head towards his sister who ignored him to continue conversing with Lucas.

Amleah turned to face Lucas fully so that her back was to her brother and her shoulder to Akakios. She smiled impishly at his gesture before gently accepting the proffered drink at last. "To your continued good health then, Mister Renwick," she toasted him, gently clinked her cup against his. "And I will look forward then to our next meeting with great anticipation."

"Precisely," Akakios agreed with a knowing smile and quick wink as he looked between the unknown twins. "I've found through the years our business is much more effective and efficient through private agreements."

Setting his glass down at the nearby table hardly having had half his wine he leaned toward Ro'or, elbows on his knees in feigned interest. "Forgive me, but you seem quite interested in all this, much more than I'd usually expect from a, well, uninterested party," he pointed out with a small smile. "May I ask if you have any history with my line of work?"

Lucas happily met her toast, a genuine smile there as he studied her and tuned out the other conversation in the room. Akakios normally handled interest in their work. He could scarcely call it his own considering he was fairly hands-off, plus he was much more interested in closer company.

"As will I, Your Ladyship," he murmured softly, dipping his head out of respect for her station. "Or is there another name you would prefer to be called by?"

Ro'or eyed the man and his apparent interest coolly. He was not so easily convinced that Akakios was any more interested in the prospect of Ro'or's business than Ro'or himself was interested in conducting business with Akakios. They were alike in that respect, both were men of subterfuge who were testing the waters out around each other to see who would snap and who would flee.

"Perhaps," the dark twin responded evasively. "I may have in another life dabbled here and there with such trades. But," he added, turning slightly to glance at his sister, "a woman can change a man. Or at least she can try." Ro'or smirked and chuckled darkly while partaking more of his glass.

Amleah heard her brother, her brow furrowing slightly but otherwise ignoring the rather pointed jab that she personally knew was more for show than truth between them. Instead she did her best to focus on the kindly gentleman before her that seemed as interested in conversing with her as she was with him.

She smiled almost chidingly at him while giggling lightheartedly. She was too gracious to embarrass or insult him for his rather brash question but nor was she about to give in so quickly to such informality with someone she had only met a few hours prior. "It's a pity you're unable to try this wine tonight Mister Renwick," she stated emphasizing his name in hopes he would understand her answer to his question. "Perhaps when we are able to get better acquainted at our next meeting we might garner the opportunity to discuss it more."

Akakios's eyes turned on the only woman in the room, studying the way she was turned away and speaking with his friend. They seemed to be getting along quite well but it did make him think his prospects of getting her alone again anytime soon were slim, especially knowing her station. He smiled knowingly as he turned his attention back to Ro'or.

"Time never changes some things," he agreed wistfully then shrugged. "But that is a pity. There's more than enough coin to be made, but... Not everything good comes from gold."

Still more or less tuning out the other conversation in the room Lucas smiled in understanding for her continued formality. Bowing his head slightly for his brief disrespect of her station he let the moment pass. "Of course," he answered with a sincere smile. "I'll be looking forward to it."

"I always found the connections that one garners in such trades to be far more valuable than any sack of coin. You never know when they might be of some use to you," Ro'or commented pointedly. "After all when all the money runs out or the market dries of interest then there is always people out there able to rise above it. The more you know, the more likely you are to have the means to protect yourself. Wouldn't you agree Reolaras?"
Title: Re: A Spoonful of Sugar Helps the Medicine Go Down [Goblin]

He could only smile privately at the thought that his market would ever run dry. It hadn't ever before and he doubted such a trade ever would, but he did agree with the odd man's sentiment of being prepared and protected. "Of course," he agreed easily enough, a smile reaching his eyes as he studied the dark-haired man.

"I must admit I'm curious what you find so useful about knowing those in my profession, but I suppose a gentleman can have his secrets." Akakios chuckled, eyes flickering to the lady of the room again and finding himself still quite peeved by the comfortableness he sensed in Lucas.

He cleared his throat to try and get his attention, pleased when the Fae's eyes immediately met his own for the sound. "You have been so generous to allow Mister Renwick and I to take up so much of your time this evening. I would never wish to take advantage of such an invitation. Might be best if we took our leave now," he suggested, surprised by the reluctance he saw in Lucas's features.

The younger man was careful not to make his true interests so obvious to the vampire but he couldn't help the few quick glances of apology he shot Amleah's way. His fingers twitched with longing to be far removed from proper behavior and etiquette. He dearly wished to be bold enough to take her hand or offer a quick kiss to her cheek before they parted ways, but he felt it far too dangerous with both Akakios and her seemingly stern adviser in the room.

Lucas showed only a flickering moment of weakness, though, his expression quickly changing to a distant smile. "If it would not offend Her Ladyship," he agreed, bowing his head to Amleah with respect.

Ro'or simply smirked, keeping all the answers to himself while giving nothing away. As far as he was concerned, the other man was still an undecided factor and therefore could not be trusted with anything more than he possibly had already obtained from their little exchange. It did not escape him either the way that Akakios's eyes drifted once more to his sister which only served to widen his smirk.

Amleah on the other hand was rather disappointed and even a bit displeased at the interruption as evidenced by the flickering flash of tension across her face and the stiffness in her shoulders and smile. Lucas was not the only one who was reluctant. A quick glance to her twin though revealed that it was indeed time to draw the evening to an end.

"It was no trouble at all," she informed them, finally allowing her eyes to meet Akakios's evenly. "Will you be staying long in Tirial? I would be delighted if an opportunity arose where we could meet again." Amleah smiled shyly, the warmth of it reaching even her eyes. "You and Mister Renwick are excellent conversationalists after all. It would be foolish of me to let you both leave without even a semblance of hope over a return."

"Now, now Amleah, you know there are a great many affairs these gentlemen most certainly must attend to. It would not do for you to distract them from their duties all for the sake of your own silly whims and fancies. Come, come my dear let them be on their way. They've entertained and humored you long enough," Ro'or cut in, once more continuing their charade of a troubled relationship.

Amleah for her part looked as if she had swallowed something rather sour and was in the process of biting her tongue to keep from lashing out. Her smile was tight as if prepared to spring open in her defense at the very next insult sent her way. "Humor me?" she asked, slowly turning her head to look at him, "or humor you?

"I did desire to speak more cordially with Lord Reolaras but it seems you've engaged him in conversation to the point of boredom as he now wishes to leave and I have yet to truly converse with him as I had intended. My conversations with him earlier this evening alone were far more fascinating than anything you've managed to say in the last decade or so. In fact as far as I'm concerned you can be dismissed for the evening." She turned her head back to her guests, offering them both a slightly apologetic smile.

Ro'or looked at her with disbelief as he rose to his feet in haste. "Amleah, you-!"

"Good night," she interrupted sharply without so much as even looking in his direction, "brother."

Akakios was rather amused by the bickering between the siblings. Quite a few statements that day made much more sense to him after Amleah’s confirmation of such wonderful news.

It was hard to hide his genuine grin of pleasure but even more difficult to hide the hunger in his eyes as they fixated upon the High Lady, studying her in a predatory fashion. “On the contrary, I did not wish for us to keep you for too long upon our first day of meeting,” the vampire offered, taking a small step closer to the light-haired woman.

“Besides, I was summoned here to attend your...festivities. And Mister Renwick as well. This was a trip of pleasure, not business. We’re in no rush.” Akakios chuckled softly under his breath, hungry eyes flickering to the man he now understood to be her brother. It put him quite at ease to know there was no true obstacle in his way, no complicated relationships to untangle.

“I must confess I never really tire of speaking of it, Lord Dvorak. I only noticed your sibling did not seem as interested in it as yourself. It only seemed polite to cease it, hm?”

Lucas had relaxed considerably to hear she was not truly in a relationship with the man he now understood to be her brother. He had had his doubts, of course. No proper lady of her rank would give him so much of her time and attention if she were truly taken.

While he knew it was in his nature, though, it bothered the Fae more than he was comfortable mentioning to see his oldest friend's obvious-to-him signs.

Offering a warm smile of politeness he waved off his friend’s blunt words and tried to lighten the mood. He didn't like seeing the vampire stare so hungrily at Amleah, but it was hardly his place to stop him from pursuing her if she would not attempt to herself.

“We will probably remain for another day or two. I can't think of any pressing matters to attend to, unless of course I haven't yet heard of them.” Lucas eyed his friend pointedly at that, hoping he had not left him to look a fool before them as he was quite desperate to not be telling any lies.

I can't think of anything.” The vampire laughed heartily at the look the younger man was giving him.

Amleah smiled and nodded her head at their responses even as her brother continued to hover tensely over her. She opened her mouth to respond when Ro'or placed his hand on her shoulder to try and get her attention again. Without looking at him she brushed his hand away. "Go," she commanded quietly yet pointedly. The noblewoman waited, listening to see if he would obey and only when the door closed with his departure did she breathe an audible sigh of relief.

"My apologies gentlemen, he's not always like this." She giggled softly in jest, "only mostly." Her face lit up with her laughter as she attempted to motion for Akakios to sit again. "I would relish your continued you company though if you both could spare the time. I do not often get to converse so freely these days. I understand completely though if you must retire for the evening. I'm sure your travels were exhausting to have come so far for such a small affair as tonight."

With Ro'or gone Akakios quietly stepped closer to take the chair he'd left at her side. "It wouldn't be any trouble," he promised with a hungry grin, showing far too much teeth for what Lucas was comfortable with. When Amleah's head was turned he flashed a stern, warning look at the vampire but it was obviously ignored.

"I'm quite used to travel, honestly. Especially with a worthy destination, it's no bother to me. Or to Mister Renwick I'd wager."

"Mhm." Lucas rolled his eyes, finding his friend bending over backwards to assure her quite annoying on its own. He knew the game he was getting at but didn't really like it with Amleah so obviously being his target. With a sigh and a smile he waved his hand dismissively, "No trouble at all, Your Ladyship. We would be honored and delighted to remain in your gracious company."

The noblewoman adjusted her position to sit back further on the couch so that she could converse with both gentlemen more comfortably. "That is a comfort to hear as I am equally delighted to have you both here." She smiled happily while taking a sip of her wine. "So tell me then what do you both think of my humble province? Be as blunt as you desire, I am always fascinated by what others think of the little place I call home."

Pleased that she was willing to stay up a while longer with them, Akakios settled back to relax more casually in the chair. "Well, I must confess, Lady Dvorak," he chuckled, "I've seen very little of the land myself. But I hear very good things, and its people are obviously a treasure." He eyed her pointedly at that before offering his friend a knowing smile. "Mister Renwick has far more experience with all of that, though, I'm sure."

"I've visited once or twice before," he admitted, his smile relaxed even in the face of his friend rudely challenging him in silence. "Each has been a greater pleasure than the last. Wonderful company, of course, and I must say your lands are far more...well, refined. There's only so much class that can come from being surrounded by sailors and fishermen," he teased.

"What a shame," Amleah lamented with a pitying gaze. "You really should take the time to enjoy my land of you find yourself with the time Lord Reolaras. It's really quite lovely though my opinion may be biased of course." She chuckled softly behind her hand before turning to Lucas with great delight.

"Tell me though Mister Renwick what have you seen and where have you gone that has earned such stellar reviews from you? I know how much I love Tirial but surely it does not compare to the bustling and colourful harbours of the coast. Our lands are old and perhaps too traditional for this changing world." She was turned once more to face Lucas, her expression obviously delighted by the prospect of discussing the topic further with a knowledgeble source.

Lucas shot his friend a knowing grin, understanding that Amleah's interest seemed to be firmly hooked upon him now.

"On the contrary, I find it quite refreshing. Perhaps, with respect, you've been among them for too long, Your Ladyship. But if I may say...you seem an excellent example of your province: traditional yet forward-thinking, no?" He relaxed back in his seat a bit more, beginning to feel truly at ease with her even with their present topic of conversation. "It is good to maintain our roots, it's where culture comes from after all. But innovation and progress are equally as important. A good balance is important, if you ask me."

Akakios did his best not to outright glower at them, feeling a bit snubbed that Lucas had once again seized the conversation from him. Did he not see his interest in her? No, he must have. And he was doing it on purpose.

He softened his features as he listened, an idea formulating as he waited patiently for an opportunity to cut in again.

Amleah blushed faintly, her eyes lowering in humble shyness at Lucas's praises before she was able to compose herself enough to answer without tripping over her words. This gentleman was just so kind and earnest that it was sweet and refreshing to have a simple conversation with no agendas or expectations for once.

"You are too kind, Mister Renwick. But, also correct I believe. There must always be a balance. Without it we either become bogged down by what was and the way things were or we stumble and fall in the rush to abandon and leave those things behind. Still though perhaps we'll ave to agree to disagree. Both places have their own charm and beauty that make them so lovely and unique. It is a pity they are not more accessible and closer to each other."

Lucas studied her carefully, mindful to not be too hawkish even though he was becoming increasingly curious about his new High Lady acquaintance. "Truly a pity," he agreed with a soft smile that only had Akakios glowering.

"Being so far from our home provinces I'm sure we'll be among your lovely lands at least a little while longer," the vampire piped in.

"That's a relief then," she replied, turning her head but not her posture to face Akakios. "Hopefully it is enough to have a proper sampling of all that Tirial has to offer. There is so much that makes these lands what they are, so much history too for that matter. If I may ask what interests you, gentlemen? Perhaps I can help direct you to areas that would please you more than just sending you to the general attractions."

"I find good company keeps my interest more than ancient grounds or pretty temples. I've seen enough over the years, most of it is the same flavor of boring," Akakios explained cynically, moody and knowing too much of human conversation to not notice how she seemed far beyond any chance of giving him her full attention with Lucas nearby.

Lucas chuckled and offered an easy, apologetic smile to the High Lady for his friend's crassness. "I'm a simple man and quite easily entertained, Your Ladyship. If you've any local treasures or wonders you'd like to point us to I'm sure I can coax Akakios here to tag along with me for a visit. I'm certain he'd regret it if he found out about something later," he teased, winking playfully at the vampire who simply frowned and shrugged in agreement.

Amleah sighed softly, her face showing dejection at Akakios's answer. "What a pity, Lord Reolaras. I would have liked to show you what my lands hold. I think you might have been surprised to see what have more than just ancient grounds and pretty temples as you've called them. We of Tirial take great pride in our culture and homeland. It is all but insult to not recognize that and experience it as a newcomer," she informed him with a slight barb that spoke of her nicked pride.

"Mister Renwick, you needn't force your companion to join you. If he wishes to be such a stick in the mud then perhaps it is best to leave him be. If it's not too simple for you though there is an old temple that I often frequent in my spare time. It has the most lovely gardens you see. It's a good place to just take in everything and be at peace with the world. But, again that's only my lowly opinion."

Her sharpness surprised Akakios, piquing his curiosity about her. Akakios hadn't thought he could have been rude with what he'd said. A bit too honest for mixed company, perhaps, but not rude to garner that sort of reaction. He made a mental note that the High Lady was far more emotional than he'd originally thought her to be.

"Forgive me," he offered with a shrug and a disappointed frown. "I meant no insult to you or your lands. I am simply nowhere near a 'newcomer' as you call me."

While Lucas felt for his friend's troubles he didn't think it was his place to get between their disagreements, especially when he intended on staying on Amleah's good side. "I would be honored to accompany you whenever you can spare the time. No need to interrupt your schedule. If nothing else I will make certain we have a chance to speak before I depart," he assured her with a warm smile. Truthfully, he wanted much more than one final meeting. He hoped to have the opportunity to spend some quality time together, getting to know her better away from the ritual of socializing in public.

Akakios raised a brow at his friend's eagerness but his mind was too clouded by his thirst to put forth the effort to comment on him. Wine had not been enough for him and if he could not convince the beauty he'd been shadowing all evening to give him what he wanted he would certainly need to find another to sate him. His eyes softened as he remained silent and stuck in his thoughts just trying to formulate a plan, though a particular intensity remained in his gaze as he watched Amleah.

She eyed Akakios stiffly. She had been perhaps a bit rash and forceful with her venom but she still stood by her opinion. Those of Tirial were very proud to be so and took that pride very seriously. An insult to their lands was taken as a personal affront. She had no way of knowing of course who and what the man before her was, but calling Tirial boring to its new High Lady was not the most brilliant of moves if she had anything to say about it. Instead she nodded her headed slightly at his apology before turning back to Lucas.

"Thank you Mister Renwick. I would like that very much. Please both of you feel welcome to drop by my home. I would be honored to entertain you for a few hours as I am able." Amleah bowed her head gently with a warm, welcoming smile to each of them though her eyes lingered longer on Lucas than on Akakios.

Akakios's lips twitched up in a small smile at her offer. He was certain it was merely out of politeness that she was welcoming him, he'd likely said far too much to harm her delicate, prideful feelings as the High Lady. She still smelled delicious, though, and it made him curious to know if he might ever get her alone for a taste.

Meanwhile Lucas's eyes lit up, relieved that she was inviting them even after Akakios's social missteps. Perhaps it would be better if the vampire didn't accompany him to her home. He was worried for what else he might say to insult her and her homeland if he could not keep him on a tight leash. It was nearly impossible for him, especially on longer trips when his hunger was difficult to discreetly satisfy.

"That would be a delight, I'm sure," Lucas agreed warmly, flashing her a smile and holding her eyes for as long as he was able before looking to Akakios apprehensively. He winced at the thought of him coming along to sour whatever good mood he might have been able to keep with the High Lady. It was clear enough to him that the vampire was not feeling his best.

"Only if you feel able to attend," he insisted gently to his friend, raising a brow pointedly to emphasize his double meaning and not wanting to alarm Amleah by being too forward about his friends needs if she had no need to know about them. Of course, he didn't realize that Akakios had already set his sights on her.

"I'd be happy to come by," the vampire said, glancing to his friend briefly but mostly ignoring him and his pointed looks to offer Amleah a smile. "Perhaps the sooner to better though, if that isn't too much trouble. For the rest of the evening, perhaps? Or would the morning be better?" He hoped she might indulge his request, though he didn't realize his impatience probably made it sound more like demands.

"I'm happy to know you are both so eager," she replied delicately, practically beaming at Lucas before turning a warm smile to Akakios. "However, Lord Reolaras I'm afraid that I'm not staying in my home this evening as I am also a guest of our host and hostess. I apologize for the inconvenience that creates for you. I would be willing to allow you to escort me to my rooms this evening if that would be an acceptable alternative for you. I would hate to cause you offense or upset.

"Unfortunately though gentlemen, it is getting quite late for me and I'm afraid that I will have to excuse myself and retire." Amleah smiled at each of them, nodding her head in a small apology as she made to smooth her skirts in preparation of standing back up.

Lucas smiled at her softly, nodding in understanding and not wanting to trouble her further if she was ready to retire for the evening. "Of course. It was a pleasure meeting with you, I hope we can find some time to speak again."

He looked to his friend who seemed to be holding together much better now, even though it was entirely a front to avoid suspicion. He trusted that Amleah would be safely escorted now that the vampire knew who she was, even if he did seem quite hungry. Surely Akakios would not draw so much attention or scandal to himself by attempting to feed from Tirial's high lady. He could find some servant of the house who might be agreeable in the dark of night. At least, that was how his arrangements away from home usually went. Lucas had no reason to suspect anything else from him.

Akakios rose to offer Amleah his arm, nodding to Lucas as he slipped out the door they'd come through to find his own quarters for the night. "I would be honored to accompany you, but I'm afraid you'll need to show me the way," the vampire chuckled, trying to make light of his unfamiliarity with the house or her lodgings. Surely there was a dark corner they could slip into along the way, though. He would find some way to secure privacy with the high lady for what he wanted from her.

Amleah smiled warmly at Lucas, offering him a gentle nod of her head before rising and accepting Akakios's proffered arm. "That would be delightful Mister Renwick. I hope you have a very pleasant rest of your evening," she bade him softly before she was escorted out by the other gentleman.

"I believe Lord Reolaras that I can indeed manage that," Amleah chuckled as she lead them gently down the correct halls. Her pace was sedate and leisurely for she saw no need to rush off to bed quite yet. As far as she knew Akakios was an upstanding gentleman as well and they could converse further as they walked.

"You mentioned earlier, Lord Reolaras that you are no stranger to my homeland. Do you come to Tirial often then? Or did you perhaps live here at some point in your youth? I know several noble families tend to send their youth here for the rich history our province holds. We do tend to love our stories here," she chuckled, laughing softly and politely to herself.
