MOTHER. OF. GOD.

*Headdesks repeatedly*

If this is just my mind playing a cruel joke on me in my sleep, I'll just give up.

Sign me up! Do you have a storyline in mind? Is it going to be like a Jrpg and have a very fixed "on rails" storyline or is it going to be a Wrpg where there are questlines and a main quest and side quests (like skyrim)

Also it looks to be from the little screen capture to be a text based rpg. Would there be any voice acting at all? (ie npc catch phrases and other stuff like that) because if there is totally sign me up for auditions or something

As for my characters? Just all of them. Take them all. Use them or not use them however you please.

Edit: also once this game is finished and I log a few hundred hours into it. I want to build a minecraft world model of it.

Edit V.2: Minecraft. Not monitary. Stupid tablet autocorrect

ANSWERS FORTHCOMING

- knowing me, it will get pretty side-windy with the storyline!  Definitely sidequests and things will be in there!
- I would LOVE to get voices in here if possible.  That's like at the top of my ultimate wish list for this thing.  Also prolly like the hardest to make happen but I bet we could do it!!
- We now have a broad main character concept and sort of beginning so that means WE CAN REALLY START ON THIS THING FOR REALS NOW

Sign me up for playtesting. The sooner I can get into this game the better. Also I have proficient experience in finding all the ways to break a game. So if possible, however far from now, I want to play test this.

And I will hold you, to that.

But I need sleeps. I have to be up for work in two and a half hours. Thanks for this. This is now my new Safe. (Imgur reference for those who don't understand)

I don't even quite get what this is but I'm in.

What am I signing up for?

I guess I'll just copy Zane. That seems safe.

Take my characters. All of them. And I'll playtest.

But actually, what is this?

p.s. I get the feeling that I can't volunteer my characters until signups... oh well...

What a cool and fun idea 8D
I always talk about wanting to do a video game in my spare time but get overwhelmed in the planning phase so that normally thwarts my.efforts 8D
Once I'm more awake I'll comment more but if you guys need any help, I've made video games before, so just let me know XD

Also, the artwork looks.gorgeous <3

Sign me up for playtesting, and I might even do a review on a youtube channel of the game, very professional style, with lots of "I love that character"

*dies*
*comes back to life*

Will there be gods? If so sign up up Baihua and Defteroi. Perhaps the character could meet Baihua in a dream.

If Kirnadaz is in here (high probability) then so will Ardeadai.

Make a random cave with Vryk in it!
And a book on lore mentioning Denekynia.
And Arkie.

Sign me up for Play-testing.

GETTING YOUR CHARACTER INTO THE GAME

  • your character will only be in the game if you want them to of course! (:
  • I'll post sign ups when slots become open for NPCs
  • yuuuup this means custom artwork and sprites for your charries (8
  • the longer you've remained active and the more active your character has been in the world, the better chance you'll have of getting them into the game...so now's a good time to start being consistently active on the forum while we do some story scripting!
  • We'll need variety—shop keepers, mercenaries, bandits, nobility, assassins, priests, etc....including a few badasses to join as guest party members for brief periods of time!

So does that mean like, since Lion and I are SOTE mega-losers, we have default slots in the game? loool
*shows picture of the proof*
(http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2013/364/e/9/lion_and_spice_losers_for_life_by_visualspice-d7008dc.jpg)

XD but lols, I kid about lion and my's loserness because, sadly those things amuse me. 8D
But it's all in good fun!

EDIT/ADD: Also, I'm pretty sure no one can beat me like, ever with online time loool
I was in the hospital 4 times this year and I'm still the winner 8D

I'm on my phone, so I can't answer all questions right now, BUT we have since figured out that the first characters we will need will be in ESSYRN.

This isn't a sign up yet, cuz we still need to decided on specific character types we need, but this is a heads up to get to joining or playing your Essyrni characters, because those guys are what our first sign ups will be for!

Hmmmm... No characters for Essyrn planned and the only character that I could see there is Scipio Prosper. So if you end up needing a party guest. He could be considered a speed class, good for hard hits but extremely low health. However I doubt he would join indefinitly as he loves his running career. Let me know when when you get to Serendipity, then prepare your inbox.

And Spicy, I saw this and I was automatically like "well, they could just use all of Spicy's characters and be set for the entire game".

Huh. Cool.
I'm so freaking inactive though, so while I would shout BELLE AND NOVEMBER from the high roof tops, I've made 50 odd posts in, what, 6 months, so that wouldn't even be a thing that would happen.

I'd love to help even in rough concept art though, simply because I want to take Games Art and Design at Uni so it would help it beef up my portfolio for my 'imminent' interview. I really do need to be told what to draw and have a time limit and you know, stuff that would be relevant (and it's an excuse for people to get free character art so YUP).

I'm always a bit iffy about these kinds of projects simply because I've seen loads come and slowly kinda vanish, which is sad, but I'm throwing a coin in anyway because it's a fun little thing XD

It could!  We have a lot of areas with very few characters.  If you were to have any characters in those places, you'd have a really good shot at getting them in the game!

Question: will the main character be joining the SotE forum canon? That way we may all poke and prod him/her at our own pleasure and at the pleasure of their writer?
Title: Re: GAME PROGRESS AND GEN INFO
Post by: Brisinger987 on December 31, 2013, 12:41:41 PM
I echo Zane's question. I think actually threading two characters (NPC and Main) to see how the interact would give great insight on how they would truly interact. So, for example an in game quest and a thread on sight would both follow the same plot:

QuoteNPC Kirnardaz gives quest: "Main Character, fetch this item for me or your companion will die."

Main character gets item.

Main Character returns to fetch companion.

Kirnardaz betrays Main Character.

Fight/boss-battle.

Win/lose and consequences.

I think actually threading this general plot out would make it so much more real if it were to be scripted, as we could truly see how the two characters mesh.

(By the way, this was an example I created for the sake of the question and idea I presented, and while I would LOVE to see Kirnardaz in the game, this is just an example)
Title: Re: GAME PROGRESS AND GEN INFO
Post by: Zane on December 31, 2013, 01:17:26 PM
That is actually an amazing idea. And if the person who is threading with the main character drops the thread or doesn't continue thread then it just doesn't go into the game. Excellent idea!

Sorry for the double post. Buuuuuut, we could offer dlc or updates with new missions and enemies and so forth. Essentially the game could evolve as the forum does. In theory anyway. Never worked with the RPG maker program
Title: Re: GAME PROGRESS AND GEN INFO
Post by: visualspice on December 31, 2013, 01:36:23 PM
You can have clear endings without the thread. You'd just have to preplot things with the game writers (aka- Tally and Rhi) ^_^
(which, trust me, would go faster for production purposes XD )
THough I'm not sure they offered open story slots for us to add to- so far it's just npc slots. So I'm sure when Tally is online next she can enlighten us on how in-depth these npcs are intended to be. ^_^
SO exciting though, ain't it? :D
Tally and Rhi = the best X3
Title: Re: GAME PROGRESS AND GEN INFO
Post by: Brisinger987 on December 31, 2013, 01:38:33 PM
Major plot sites like the Connlaothian Civil War could become DLC stories! They could open up new areas of the map, new characters, quests, all that sort of stuff! Of course, like Zane said, it would be based around whether the program supports it, or whether it is possible.

That is a good idea Zane, and thank you for advancing my idea a fair amount.

But like I say, even if we didn't get a complete thread, just post until we feel we have an idea of what the Main Character and the NPC would be like during interaction. I mean, there's no need to literally thread out every line of dialogue, just enough that Tally and Rhi can get an idea of how two characters would really interact.
Title: Re: GAME PROGRESS AND GEN INFO
Post by: visualspice on December 31, 2013, 01:51:49 PM
yeah the thread is a good idea XD I'm just saying I wouldn't want to hold rhi and tally back if a thread becomes sluggish to see how characters mesh- but mini-threads for that purpose would be fun XD but I know what you guys mean. Lots of stuff to think about! We'll just have to see what the almighties come up with in what time allows ^_^

I have to second spicy on this one. While it's a good idea in theory, I doubt it would work very well in practice. Plus, I think the amazing Rhi and Tally are good enough writers to understand how these conversations would go. XD It's not like they created this site for nothing.

Title: Re: GAME PROGRESS AND GEN INFO
Post by: Brisinger987 on December 31, 2013, 02:04:56 PM
It would be difficult to put into practice, yes, that's why I suggest it only be for characters that are experimental ideas, not definite NPC's. And while I know that they are both brilliant writers and character creators, if (this bit comes from my understanding of how the NPC sign up thing is going to work, and may not be how it is actually happening) the characters are going to literally become sprites and retain their personalities, who else knows the character better than the person who created them? That's just my understanding of it anyway, and it's only an idea.

I've just realised how much I'm defending myself from an attack that's not there. I'm misunderstood for being biased way too often...

It's exciting so no worries :D

Though I'm seriously just staring at it going 'Yeah, so awesome' and then my brain melts cause I dunno what to say about my own characters :T except if the mods were so inclined, I wouldn't mind the civil war being an in-game thing since Rhi was so kind enough to allow me to host such an event ^_^ and i'm just glad it's become so popular *_*

So yeah, I excite bikes, too

Just an idea that struck me considering we have quite a few blacksmiths here present in the rp game, what if the Main Character + Party had the option of upgrading/polishing their weapons/items in the game when they enter certain towns/areas.  Like most RPGs have that option when shopping for new equipment like Demon's Souls or any other Top-Down rpg like Dragon Quest/Warrior, or even Final Fantasy.

I'm interested in throwing my character Veron Aris into the mix as an NPC since she's technically from Fell, where the entire setting in the rp game essentially starts anyway, after the massive Cataclysm, etc.  I think it'd be interesting if Veron could offer powerful weapons and armor to the MC + Party, once certain ingredients were collected (ie. typical fantasy things like maybe a Unicorn Horn, or Minotaur Blood, Dragon Scales, etc.), considering her gifts with forging.  Possible sidequests/sub-plot might be the MC + Party collecting her demonforged weapons/items and schlepping them to her to destroy or perhaps even purify to turn into a stronger weapon they could use.

Additionally, other player-created blacksmiths could be present in the game and offer said upgrading/smithing services to the MC + Party throughout their travels.

Not sure how likely that would be since she hasn't been any threads yet, but just thought I'd throw it out there.

This is something I've been wondering about myself!  So we don't actually know yet! xD  There's lotsa things we could do...they could be adoptable canons for instance.  We've never had canons on here before and I'm not even sure I want us to, but there is that possibility. o__o  OR they could be NPC canons that anybody can reference and play in their threads.  Something to think about!

I'm seeing, even from the little bit of preliminary work we've done, that the NPCs will be hugely varied in their roles in the game.  Some NPCs will be heavily impactful on the narrative, others will be sitting in their little shop for the PCs to buy things, and then EVERYTHING in between those two extremes. (8  Roles for so many types of characters!

Quote from: Brisinger987 on December 31, 2013, 02:04:56 PM...the characters are going to literally become sprites and retain their personalities, who else knows the character better than the person who created them? That's just my understanding of it anyway, and it's only an idea.
Correct!  The goal is for any character from the forum to really BE that character in the game, with their personality, abilities, weapons, and personal details to all be intact.  So we will definitely be working WITH you guys in terms of dialogue and the actions your characters take in their NPC roles to make sure they're doing what they would really do in that situation. xD

FOR EXAMPLE!  One NPC I keep thinking we'll need near the beginning is an experienced guardian/escort guest party member, someone to help the hero out for a few battles right after disaster strikes and she's trying to get somewhere safe.  The exact dialogue and actions (and gear/abilities/class/etc.) that NPC takes will be something we work out with you, possibly by doing some quick threading of the situation!

I love weapon upgrading myself and would like to have it in the game too! *__*  Another thing that I personally love is class changing (like in Fire Emblem) where you hit a certain level and then you get to pick one of two badass new classes for the character.

Hmmm and now I think I need a suggestions thread for gameplay mechanics that people like to see in games. >_o  To collect all the things that players would really like to have in the game!

Quote from: Sir Zane on December 31, 2013, 05:37:19 PMWhat kind of music are we wanting? Who is making this music?
Aha!  Well!  In my spare time I've been working off and on with making an animated music video for the site, so I already have a ton of free music resources indexed!  :3  I'll be pouring over lots of those, plus the resources available in the game making community, to put together the needed music.  I'm actually overwhelmed by the sheer amount of options available for the music. o__o

BUT THAT REMINDS ME!  If anyone out there is a musician and you want to get your music into the game, definitely contact me!

Is the theme music going to be 8-bit? Or an actual soundtrack?
I haven't made a decision on many tracks yet, but I'm aiming for NOT 8-bit.  It isn't quite the sound I want.

QUESTION(s) ABOUT THE GAME MECHANICS:

This particular question deals with equitable items and how they will be handled. First of all. Are there equitable weapons/armour in the plotting of this game. Or are all stats boosted by leveling up and so on. (Think Pokemon). Or is it both stats and Equips? Will equitable items be visible on the PC or not? Will PC's be able to equip items that don't pertain to their class? (Rogue with a greatsword?)

Thus far, it's looking like it'll be both!  There's such a wealth of possibilities with equipment, it'd be a shame not to have equippable weapons and armor.

Quote from: Sir Zane on January 02, 2014, 12:23:30 AMWill equitable items be visible on the PC or not?
I'm checking into this and will let you know!  It's something I would like to do if possible.

It depends on the character!
Each class will, of course, have it's own weapons.  Then each character might deviate slightly from the class restrictions based on their history. (:

Let's say we have a mage character, and the mage class is restricted to staffs or something right?  But this particular mage spends a lot of time traveling on foot through the wilderness, so they're also proficient with a bow, so the character will be able to use bows.  There's a few different ways I can make this happen, including subclasses (which I really like the idea of), but whichever way we go, the classes will have set weapons but a lot of the characters will have personal variations on those.

will there be cosmetic items (items which only affect the character's looks, not stats)? I found it as very beneficial in games, since you can adapt your character's look without making a sacrifice on stats.
but please, if so, keep the chainmail bikini on minimum >_<

If you look back in earlier parts of this thread, you can find that Tally has said that there will be sign ups eventually, as plotting for this game continues, you can volunteer characters depending on whers they are most likely to be found ince the sign ups for that area is up.

Also tally, when this is complete, will it be a free to download or will we have to buy it or free for a short time so on and paid afterwards or a free link to download on this sight and a pay link on steam. Details. I needs them.

And we need a class that's suited for double wielding, two-handed weapons and has a little ranged damage, too (but not shields, shields would make it OP).

so someone who's focused mostly on melee damage, uses ranged to pull enemies and weaken them before the combat, but can't block hits.

I.E. Agrias from Final Fantasy Tactics who becomes just ridiculously powerful the stronger she gets.

Well well well well well. Looks like you guys have quite the ambitious undertaking going here. Color me intrigued! ^_^

If it's a classical RPG you're putting together, I know two things you'll need in abundance: sprites, and quality music. And, to an extent, I can help with both.

There is a certain resource that will make music-hunting for the game vastly easier and give you no shortage of options to cull through: FreePlayMusic.com (http://www.freeplaymusic.com/). I've used their vast archive of thematically and genre-sorted music before for multimedia projects of my own and, as long as you don't have plans to charge for the game and properly credit the site, there should be no issue with using what they have available. Just don't be surprised if you end up on there for hours at a time harvesting great music, for the game or otherwise -- the place can be sliiiiiightly addictive.

As for sprites... I have some experience in that domain, and even given my now somewhat more limited free time I'd be willing to put in a bit of work on developing sprite resources. I should note that I'm not a sprite artist per say -- I do my best work by editing and manipulating existing sprites, but as my portfolio will show those skills can be quite versatile. Take a look:

[1] (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y142/SpecterTH/spritework/CTZgif_zps0941b795.gif) [2] (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y142/SpecterTH/spritework/8BitCT_zps985cb752.png) [3] (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y142/SpecterTH/spritework/PrismayaCT_zpsaf0093a6.png) [4] (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y142/SpecterTH/spritework/Fieryonesheetfinished_zps645af9de.png) [5] (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y142/SpecterTH/spritework/FayteRuleSprites_zpsd7a750d0.gif) [6] (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y142/SpecterTH/spritework/DestinyRule_zpsfbd56ef8.png) [7] (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y142/SpecterTH/spritework/Borgdrones_zpse51512c4.png) [8] (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y142/SpecterTH/spritework/Specter_sprites_zpsa10fba32.png) [9] (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y142/SpecterTH/spritework/Asheroth_sprites_zpse2344fa7.png)

And the prize gem of my (older) work: [10] (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y142/SpecterTH/spritework/SapphireUnleashed_zps248437c0.gif)

And here's some of my more recent work, done for the characters of Painterlee and myself (they're just little one-offs, not full sheets):

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y142/SpecterTH/SotE/Cordell_sprite_zps7d8901d5.png) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y142/SpecterTH/SotE/Kassom_sprite_zps4c4c8b09.png) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y142/SpecterTH/SotE/Iris_sprite_zpscc2bc3ef.png) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y142/SpecterTH/SotE/Vates_sprite_zps5af023ff.png) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y142/SpecterTH/SotE/Mephy_sprite_zps32636b2b.png) (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y142/SpecterTH/SotE/Theron_sprite_zps3be8773e.png) (http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz151/BritishWolfy101/Nova_sprite_zps7abda3bd.png) (http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz151/BritishWolfy101/Belle_sprite_zps59c7f64b.png)

So, as I said, I'm willing to devote some of my time to doing sprite work for the game, provided I'm not expected to create all the sprites used. I do, however, have a... special request, something I'd like in exchange for my work.

I'd like my character Kasna (http://www.spiritsoftheearth.net/smf/index.php?topic=14804.0) to feature in the game as a hidden boss fight. She's a bad@$$ psychotic Adhara / Knight of the White Lily, so finding a way of working her in as a "secret" fight shouldn't be that hard. Just want to make my mark on the game with more than sprites, you understand. ^_^

Anyways, lemme know what you think! And if there's any other spriters on board with this, let's get together and coordinate, share resources and the like, eh?

I thought International Copyright stated that it all products can be used in entertainment, provided proper credit of course?
Title: Re: GEN GAME INFO AND Q&A
Post by: Looshi on January 07, 2014, 02:24:05 PM
Er, no. The music isn't Open Source(to be used by the public, to be edited and so forth without needed to be credited. It belongs to everyone). The people who made the music still hold the copyright. International Copyright law is having a copyright on a work when it is created in the medium. For example, an artist posts their work online, they automatically get a copyright to their work because it's published somewhere(Yes, posting stuff on the internet is considered publishing). Copyright laws are grossly misunderstood, there is no law I'm aware of where it says it's okay to use a person's copyrighted material. They can still sue you even if you're not making money off of it. There's a whole fiasco going down on Youtube with companies and people who do Let's Play videos of games; making a video with copyright material that is not their own. That's also why youtube music videos get taken down for copyright infringement.

Anyways. The musicians and the site, FreePlayMusic, hold the licenses to the music(IE: the copyright), and have the say in what it can and can't be used for. And we have to respect that.

[smart stuff about copyrights]
This is all correct, save that a thing doesn't need to be published to be copyrighted.  Anything one creates is automatically copyrighted, published or not. (:
Fortunately there is an unbelievable crap-ton of liberally-licensed indie music out there that is totally up for grabs so long as you abide by the terms of the license.  This is what I am currently sifting through for the music. (8  That the game is noncommercial makes it MUCH easier to find music for it under attribution licenses.

ACTUALLY Rhi and I were talking about ways to make a morality system not annoying for both of us (we both are really bothered by good/evil polarity in games) and what we want to do is adapt it into a kind of allegiance system.  So, for instance, you would have the chance to side with/help out the demonlords, but doing so would close quests for, say, the Order of the Moon whilst opening up more quests with the demons.

So basically akin to an elder scrolls game, where you can do everything as long as the quest lines would not conflict each other (like say in a mordecai quest line you destroy the mages guild, therefore canceling out any uncompleted mages guild quest) or would it be a can do anything anyway kind of thing?

I think it's more along the lines of a branching main story rather than a number of guilds you can join and do quest lines for.

I was just using the mordecai and mages guild as an example.

There should be pieces of paper you can find lying around which have art people here made!

it's an awesome idea.
or there should be moments in the story resembling the threads we did!

And for example, you could stumble on a ruined fort with gold golems inside with a table and an acid bath, so the hero came there after the thread happened.

Extra points if you say what thread the example was.

What is a geomancer?

Oh, and we need a fragile, but extremely quick and strong melee/ranged class like Athran and Anoriel - the armoured equivalent of mages, armed with swords, bows and stuff.

This sounds like a terrific idea.

Why did people stop posting in this thread, is the game idea still active?

Forgive me if my question may have already been answered, I dot feel like scrolling through 6 pages.

Any ideas on how the character creation will work?

Also top down is that a 2.5d style like Baldurs gate, or is it more along the lines of Pokemon?

Also, for the characters that get made NPCs, I had an idea come to mind. May be impractical but if its absurd then no worries, just trying to offer up suggestions.

Could the people who "made" the NPCs be able to play as their character on their own version?
