Title: How to Tame a Madman [Goblin]
Post by: Juno on February 14, 2016, 08:33:08 PM
A rumbling cry rang out through the small, mountainside town of Charaden. The very buildings shook and the ground quaked as the sound settled in an eerie echo through the ravine beyond. A blur of black bled across an orange dusk sky as the dragon raced over the town, the booming sound of flapping wings sounding right above the human dwellings.

He heard the confused murmurings and even saw a few curious heads poking out. When their day was done and they began to gather around their tables for a meal and rest was always the perfect time to strike. They were unguarded, unaware, and deliciously lazy.

Circling around Xibalba gave another roar, this one of triumph as he opened his maw to spew a stream of bright, nearly white fire down upon the town. To his delight the sounds of confusion were quickly turning to panic as flame slowly consumed their familiar places of safety and security.

Some attempted to put out the fires he blanketed across the rooftops, but many retreated as fireball after fireball pelted the town. He was relentless, and in that moment he lived to watch their world burn. A booming, cackling laugh rang out from his mind, the sound silent to all those ignorant of the speech of a dragon.

Earlier in the evening a rather unremarkable stranger had entered the town of Charaden in search of an inn to rest at for the night before picking up her traveling again in the morning. No one thought anything of her arrival and she was quickly forgotten in the tumult of another rather unwanted arrival.

While the townspeople fled from the black streak blazing across the sky, the hooded and cloaked stranger ran out to meet the beast head on. She stood her ground with a smirk on her face and her arms crossed over her chest where others shouldered their ways past her in hopes of finding a safe haven away from dancing flames and gnashing teeth.

She heard the dragon's laughter, well attuned to the language of the scaled creature wreaking havoc upon the helpless and unsuspecting town. "Mind sharing the joke with the rest of us, pal?" she called out once she was in front of the dragon's path, her lips still curled in amusement and her head cocked to the side as if such conversations were an everyday occurrence for her.

The voice rising above the chaos and panic of the other humans got his attention. It was rare for someone to confront him, especially someone who might understand him. Truthfully he was usually long gone by the time word of his attacks spread to nearby settlements to rally the few brave souls willing to take him on.

Pausing his onslaught, he landed atop one of the buildings already fully engulfed in his flame. The wood creaked and groaned under his weight but managed to stand. For now. He craned his neck to peer down at the shrouded human from his perch. He couldn't see much but he certainly saw that smirk. It only made him want to wipe it off her face.

'The panic. The screams. It's just too perfect. Gets me every time,' he answered, still calming from his laughter as he took in her relatively calm form. It didn't faze him. Some humans seemed to just stand still in the face of fear and certain death. Perhaps she was one with such an odd quirk.

'I think it's time you-' He was cut off by a sharp crack that sent him plummeting through the roof, a bellow of surprise escaping him as he pawed at the remains of the structure to release himself from his temporary cage of burning walls. Somehow he had it set in his mind that she'd willed such a thing upon him.

With a growl he lunged out, jaws snapping to latch onto her shoulder. He would shake her, make her scream and beg for mercy, toy with his prey as a cat would a mouse. In his mind he was already planning it, tearing her to bits here and there to spread across the countryside and along the face of the mountain he called home.

It was only after a good deal of forceful gnashing of teeth that he realized the beginning of his plan to pick her up and leave her impaled upon his fangs and dangling by a torn arm was being delayed by something. Somehow the warm gush of blood he'd expected never came and instead his teeth wrestled with a particularly infuriating metal that served as an effective barrier.

Every snap practically bounced off and with a roar he shoved off of her to glower his best dragon glare down at her. 'What in all creation is that?' he demanded angrily.

Eireann shook her head and sighed at his answer. "Now, now that's not playing very nice," she chided as if speaking to a child. Any further reply though was instantly cut off as she burst into laughter at the dragon's perch suddenly collapsing beneath the gargantuan creature. The woman actually had to hold her stomach, bending almost in two as the hilarity of the moment overcame her.

It was for this reason that she was unaware of the impending jaws of possible doom until a rather firm and uncomfortable pressure began to repeatedly bombard her shoulder and arm. Her amusement did not end there. Once she was free of the now incredulous dragon, Eireann tossed aside her tattered cloak, revealing the tightly-linked chainmail beneath it.

"Oh you know, just your run-of-the-mill anti-tear wear for handling teething dragons. Nothing special really. Would have been nice though if my cloak hadn't managed to end up caught in the fray but that's really my own stupidity and I'll take full blame one that one. Thanks for testing this out for me though," she called up cheekily, giving the lightweight tunic a pluck on either side to smooth it back out. "Now where were we?"

Observing her chainmail with an incredulous snort the dragon reared his head back to spout a few more streams of fire at some of the buildings nearby that some braver souls had the galls to put out. Of course it was his job to reignite them and he had a bit of frustration to burn off. His toy was now mocking him, calling him a child of all things, too.

'It's like you planned for this. Have you been following me?' His voice drew up in a curious tick at the thought. He hadn't encountered anyone stupid enough for that in a long time. Who walked around in dragon-resistant armor anyway? But armor had weak spots.

Before even hearing an answer he stopped the fire and clamped down on her other shoulder instead to test there. Surely there must have been somewhere he could tear it!

"Planned this? Hardly," she said with a bored yawn. "I was just passing through and hoping to spend the night before continuing on my way. I honestly have no idea who you are besides a rather petulant dragon. Then again I can't really fault you for your location choice for wreaking havoc. I mean seriously who names their town Charaden and not expect it to go up in flames?"

Eireann was cut off from saying more as the beast once more lunged at her and attempted to chew a hole through her other shoulder. She looked over at him in bemusement before gently raising a hand to pat his muzzle. "You know you might want to get your teeth checked out. I'm not sure this is the best way to go about sharpening them." She knew the precarious situation she was in with his head full of oh-so sharp teeth so close to her own rather bare and unprotected one, but Eireann was just one of those people that was either incredibly brave or incredibly foolish. She just happened to think it was a bit of both.

He growled around her shoulder for the patting, determined in his goal but slowly realizing his efforts were quite futile. Of course he could have easily crushed her head in his jaws, it was certainly a tempting thought if only to silence her, but where was the fun in that?

Perhaps he was going about this all wrong. He was so accustomed to the art of destruction that he'd lost his touch with simply instilling fear. Maybe that was all she needed to remind her of the very human instinct to flee in the face of danger.

Releasing her, Xibalba gave the troublesome armor on her shoulder a firm nudge as he drew back with a screeching roar, uncaring though perhaps because he was so near to sensitive ears.

Barely closing his maw the dragon allowed a ball of swirling, coiling fire to rise up from within. It was barely caged by his mouth, lashes of flame escaping here and there to flicker out against his scales.

'If you run now I may allow you to live,' he growled, tone flat and unimpressed with her seeming stubbornness.

She smiled knowingly at his nudging but that smile was quickly wiped from her face as he began to bellow fiercely in her face. Eireann winced in pain, blinking her watering eyes in disbelief. Once he finished she was too busy tugging her ears and moving her lower jaw in hopes of popping her ears to notice his threatening display. The heat on her face was certainly felt and only served to cause more tears to well up in her eyes.

"What?! I can't hear you! You say sumptin'?" the young woman shouted at the top of her lungs while still staggering from the noise bomb he had dropped next to her head. "Did you say you want a leaf?" Eireann looked from side to side before shaking her head. "I don't have any!" It was only then that she caught sight of the rather hard to miss fireball dancing in front of her. Instantly her features perked up and the broadest of smiles split her face in two. "Cool! That's brilliant!"

Her hollering was annoying at best, despite it being his own doing. So she at least had one weakness. He didn't quite count making a girl deaf a victory, though, and it was hardly any fun when it took so much effort on his own part.

There was a small little sliver of prideful happiness that weaseled its way into his heart to hear how impressed she was. Her genuine, appreciative awe was not something he'd heard very often before. She was like a child seeing something amazing for the first time.

Tilting his head, he finally released the fire to shoot off to into a nearby building. The town was relatively clear now, its residents huddled and wailing their dismay from a safe distance to watch their homes burn. The dragon was puzzled by this strange human, though, and quite irritated that she was evading all of his attempts at toying with her.

In a split second decision he lunged forward yet again to bite at her belly, the soft and vulnerable spot something he was quite used to being able to break through. Meeting her armor yet again, though, and finding no resistance in it Xibalba gave a growl of frustration. 'You will be sorry when I break this,' he hissed in warning.

Eireann grunted in surprise, practically doubling in half over the dragon's skull from the force of his bite and attack on her torso. The air left her lungs in a pained whoosh as she struggled to take small, calm breaths so as to not aggravate her already tender midsection. The dragon's actions did nothing to deter her pleasant mood though as she as gently and respectfully as possible stroked the scales of the black beast's forehead.

"Of course I'll be upset," she agreed, "my father and dragonmother made this for me. It is one of my most prized possessions." There was pride and joy in her voice as she informed him while meeting his great green eye with her own gaze. "So what brings you to Charaden these days?"

Dragonmother?

His attack came to an abrupt halt at that and he reared back to stare accusingly at the little human, or she was an assumed human before that statement. It was all coming together now for him, his misunderstanding of her use of the word leading him to assume that she was a halfling of some sort.

It made sense then that she'd had no fear of him, that she even had such wretched, fun-ruining armor. She was used to living among dragons, he assumed, and knew their propensity for a nibble here and there.

'I was getting tired of it ruining the view from the mountain,' he stated plainly even as his eyes continued to survey her. It was odd that she showed no signs of her assumed lineage, though he supposed the color of her hair could have served as an indicator.

Suddenly he leaned in close to press his muzzle up against her chest with little huffing sniffs. He scented nothing, though, and grumbled his frustration as he tried to figure out exactly what she was. Someone so stupidly comfortable with him couldn't possibly be just anyone.

'What kind of dragon? Where did she come from?' he asked stubbornly, thinking it entirely possible she was related to some variety he was unfamiliar with.

She looked out towards the mountains as if expecting to see the dragon's den all the way from where she stood before shrugging in understanding. "Fair enough I suppose. Not exactly the best way to go about these things but to each their own." Eireann was surprised though by his interest in sniffing her but remained as still as possible to allow him to do as he pleased. She could not help her slight squirming and giggling though as his puffing breaths tickled her.

"She?" she repeated in confusion. "Oh Lyrsa! Well I don't know where she's from exactly. I don't think I ever really asked. But she's a Blue Dwarf Spiny Spinecrest." Eireann chuckled as she added an addition to the dragon species name as it suited her dragonmother perfectly. Spinecrests, even those of the dwarf species, were known not only for the jewel coloring and heavily spined-armor but also for their fierce aggression when cornered and threatened. Just as a simple sparrow could chase off a great eagle so too could a Dwarf Spinecrest deter dragons three or four times their size from causing them any trouble.

"I don't know if you'd still be able to smell home on me though. It's been a long while since I've been back and with all my traveling I wouldn't be surprised if all you smelled was human and earth. Why the interest though? Have a bone to pick with her?"

He could only snort and glare, huffing smoke as he paced to circle around her. The fires were quickly consuming what was left standing of the town and in the distance he could hear crumbling and creaking as wood split and the buildings gradually collapsed in on themselves. It was no place to hold a conversation, really. Even he could feel the heat of the flames licking out towards the road just searching for anything else to consume.

Knowing what her "dragonmother" was didn't help him, though the information did give him pause. How did such a small breed manage a human avatar? The magic was certainly easier for himself and his larger brethren to manage, but he couldn't personally recall seeing such a thing from something so...well, tiny. He'd always assumed they were too dull, not enough headspace to be anything but a feral, snapping annoyance.

What bothered him the most was that she simply didn't smell of dragon to him. She was right: human, earth, and a little bit of that accursed metal. He had no obligation to answer her questions, though.

Even being strange he was still determined to keep her as a new toy. Perhaps he needed a break from maiming after all and a decent chew toy would entertain him well enough. 'We're flying,' was his only warning before he launched himself back up into the air.

Great paws reached out to grab hold of her as wings flapped back against the hot air rising above the town. Spotting the people still huddled in the distance, he gave a mighty roar and turned sharply to spiral up towards the mountains.

Eireann did not have much time to react before she was suddenly being scooped up about the waist and launched into the sky. All of it was incredibly thrilling for her and for the barest of moments she was completely speechless as she fought to drag air back into her awed lungs. Seconds later she was screaming, hooting and hollering, at the top of her lungs with enthusiasm. Her arms were flung up into the air as she wiggled about with glee. The fact that she was leaving a burning town of cowering villagers behind was completely forgotten in lieu of the excitement of being airborne in the claws of a massive dragon. "This is awesome!" she shouted up to him, nearly bouncing herself right out of his grasp.

Well at least he'd finally made her scream, a reward that fluffed his ego quite nicely. Only...there was something off about it. He gave a heavy, agitated sigh once he realized she was not screaming in fear but in joy. What kind of crazy woman had he chosen today?

'Awesome?' The dragon growled, bellowing a roar of frustration as he gripped her as tightly as he dared to keep her from squirming away without crushing his new toy. 'Shut up. It's just flying.'

As if to prove she should be afraid he folded his wings sharply once they were high above the lowest range of the mountains, angling to glide at a dangerously fast tilt before he completely snapped them back out to ride a gust of air even higher towards his den shadowed on the southern face.

"But it's my first time flying," she squealed as they barreled into a dive. Eireann's arms instinctively lowered to wrap comfortably around the clawed digits holding her securely in place. She was unafraid even as the wind whistled and blared in her ears and the air was nearly squeezed from her lungs, forcing her to be silent just so she could continue to breathe. The smile on her face though was unmatched and unable to be wiped from her face no matter how hard the dragon tried to make her sick.

Now how could that be? Surely a halfling could manage to fly! Perhaps this "spiny dwarf" thing she'd told him about was some wretched flightless dragon. It certainly didn't sound healthy or normal to be both dwarf and spiny.

'Then this is the last time you will ever have fun in your life,' he told her decisively, plans already set in his mind for how he would unravel the troublesome armor and melt it for a trophy. Then she would be without such protection and he would be free to tear her to pieces as he'd intended. What fine afternoon plans.

Eireann snorted in a very unladylike fashion and rolled her eyes at the dragon's melodramatic and supposedly ominous uttering. "You'll forgive me if I don't believe you then. Fun is of my own making and I'd love to see you try and stop me! No one else ever has," she declared proudly with a hint of defying challenge in her tone. She was with a massive dragon, it was as if all her dreams were coming true and she was not about to let a stubborn sky lizard keep her from her fun.

He could only assume she was both incredibly stupid and bluffing. He'd carried hundreds if not thousands of humans away to their deaths and he saw no reason for her to be an exception to that. Sure the idea of a halfling gave him pause, but a halfling that had never had the privilege to fly surely couldn't be of any worthwhile blood.

The dragon was silent the rest of the way up the spiral he took around the mountains. When at last the mouth of his den came into view he angled towards it eagerly and set her down upon the ledge, giving her a gentle shove with his muzzle to ensure she didn't just fall off.

With his landing space severely impeded he simply folded his wings and clambered up beside her, rumbling and shaking out his wings as he stepped further into the place he currently called home. It was bare of adornments and merely contained his nest as its centerpiece and assorted bones -both animal and human- tossed haphazardly around the edges of the single, open room.

'You are my toy now,' he declared. 'Entertain me or die.' Of course he expected her to die very, very soon either way. There was hardly anything new to him left in the world.

She was in complete awe to be brought into the dragon's lair and to see his nest. It was a good thing he nudged her further though as she just stood and stared in wonder before he was moving her long. With the reminder that he was behind her, she scuttled further into the den so that she could make way for him.

His declaration just made her giggle and shake her head at the supposed joke. Her mirth was very short lived though as she stood straight to attention before bowing at the waist into a rather awkward imitation of dragon's bow at the neck in deep thanks.

"Thank you oh impressive and gracious host for the honor of your flight and the sight of your den. I am humbled by your generosity and your favor," she intoned with the greatest sincerity. The pose was not held long before she was springing herself at him, her arms struggling to wrap around one of his forelegs in a firm embrace. "Truly thank you! It's amazing!"

Laughter. So she mocked him now, did she? He just stared at her as she dropped into a bow, snorting and flaring his eyes wide as he realized she was actually thanking him. For snatching her out of the town. For carrying her home. For planning to make her life a living hell. That was rich.

And then came the hug. She was far too small to get her arms all the way around him, of course. Thankfully. But as he felt the light pressure of her arms against his leg and heard her further praise and thanks he truly had to wonder how badly he'd shaken her up for her to think any of it was remotely okay or normal or safe.

'So I have chosen an insane human,' he observed, laughing quietly. 'Poor girl.'

Sticking his foreleg out awkwardly he tried to shake her off, albeit gently. There was no use thrashing her against a wall or anything. Yet.

Stepping away from her and easily climbing into his nest he curled up towards the back of it and let his neck rest over the side to peer down at her. It was a sturdy yet ever-changing structure and the dragon took care of its maintenance nearly every day.

At its base was a pile of rocks and small boulders with massive branches mixed between. All manner of plants weaved between it all for padding but at its core was a guilty pleasure of human luxury. Piles of stolen blankets, pillows, and furs formed a thick cushion for him to rest upon.

'What makes you think you hold my favor, child?' he asked, eyes twinkling with mirth. He had to admit that it at least was mildly entertaining to interact with this strange halfling.

"Eh, we're all a bit insane anyway," she replied, unfazed by his musings as she dropped away from his leg. Eireann was fascinated by his nest though. She desperately wanted to run up and crawl right into it. Instead she approached it with caution and viewed it without touching. "Well for starters you haven't crunched my bones, incinerated me into a crisp, squashed me into jelly, or dropped me off the mountaintop all the while you've carried me to your home with rather gentle care so I'm thinking things are looking on the upside right now if you don't mind my saying.

"Did you make this by yourself?" she finally asked, unable to refrain from asking as she finally crouched to inspect the outer structure with keen interest. "It's wonderfully built. Are the boulders uncomfortable? Did it take you a long time? Is the maintenance and upkeep of it rather difficult and time-consuming?"

Eireann fired off question after question as her eyes flickered from detail to detail with a child-like delight. She was unaware even of the possible danger she placed herself in both in being so close to the massive creature and in possibly irritating him with all her questioning.

The dragon twitched at her volley of observations and questions. She spoke so quickly and with such certainty that he was beginning to feel quite the guest in his home. And that just wouldn't do.

Laying lazily over the top, he twisted his head upside down to study the outer edge she was taking such an interest in. He was curious how long she could maintain a facade of interest in something so simple and plain as a dragon's nest.

'Of course I did. It's a nest and it takes a lot of work, but it's an ongoing process,' he mused. 'Not that you will ever see any of it, of course.'

Rolling over to right himself, Xibalba added, 'Flattery won't save you from your fate, child. No need to act like you've never seen one before.'

Sitting back on his haunches he peered down at her, just taking a few moments to stare at the odd human. She was already so different from the defiant girl he'd seen in the village, somehow reduced to a curious child when placed in the den of a dragon. For now there was no reason to kill her.

Eireann shrugged nonchalantly, completely unfazed by his continued threats as she did not find them particularly frightening. Instead she went about finding a way to climb into the nest carefully so as to not destroy its construction with her own clumsiness.

"Well no I haven't ever seen a nest like this before. Lyrsa is much smaller than you and her nest consists more of blankets and other soft things she's hoarded over the years rather than your more natural creation. I mean the size difference has to make it more difficult for you and therefore your feat rather remarkable," she commented moments before she threw herself towards the rim of the nest and hoisted herself into the other side of it to flop onto her back.

"I mean look at you," the woman stated, pointing at the dragon's massive chest. "One of your scales has to be the size of my palm whereas one of Lyrsa's is probably the size of the pad of my finger." She lifted her index finger to demonstrate just what she meant. "For you to create something as massive and quite comfy might I add, to withstand your generous size then that is indeed something worth recognizing don't you think?"

He merely rolled his eyes at her explanation of the small dragon's nest. It sounded absolutely pathetic. It seemed more like something some human's pet might do: build a nest purely of blankets. That just would never do for something that needed to withstand the elements like his. It seemed like a bed better suited for his human avatar's comfort.

As she climbed up he leaned his head towards her, scrutinizing the path she took for any disturbance she might cause to the construction of his nest. He shifted a few things around once she was down inside of it, adjusting a branch here and there before he sat back and peered down at her gestures with her tiny, human hand.

'Recognition... Perhaps,' he finally agreed, leaning down to snort a bit of smoke in her face.

'I hope you don't plan on staying in here for long. You are welcome to look. To admire. Not to sleep. It's not big enough to share,' he complained even though it left him plenty of room to sprawl out whatever way he liked and was big enough for even another dragon of his size.

She took no notice of his adjusents as she remained too focused on gettin herself settled comfortably and untying the small pouch attached to her belt. "Yeah, yeah," she muttered dismissively without looking up at te giant beast. "I highly doubt that's actually the case. It's not like you're even all that fat to begin with. In retrospect I'm sure you could fit two of you in here and all three of us would still be quite comfortable."

Once the pouch which fit quite comfortably into the palm of her hand was retrieved, Eireann then reached her arm in up to her elbow before withdrawing a rather thick and soft blanket that smelled fire and forge smoke, home for her.

"You know I really must thank you though. I mean you at least had the decency to torch the place before I paid for a room there. This way at least I don't have to waste my coin in lousy accommodations. That would have been a bitch let me tell ya. They always charge you out the rear for the tinest room and get off making it out to be fit for kings. Can you believe that shit?"

He tilted his head curiously as he witnessed the retrieval of a human-sized blanket from a very, very small pouch. It seemed it was bigger on the inside than it was the outside. It was downright unnatural and he could only assume she possessed some great, powerful magic. Perhaps she might have her uses after all.

'I don't know, I don't rent human places,' he admitted, knowing full well he was used to just taking what he wanted or maneuvering himself into whatever temporary accommodations he needed. 'But it needed to be burned, so I suppose you've simply reaped the benefits of my hard work. Congratulations.'

Turning his attention back to their sleeping situation, though, he prodded at the blanket with his muzzle. It had an interesting and quite pleasant scent that was actually fairly soothing to him, but he couldn't quite place why. 'How did you do that? Where did you get that from? Is...your bag a portal to somewhere else?' he guessed, knowing such things could exist.

Eireann eyed him warily as he nuzzled at her blanket. Although her firsthand experience with dragons was rather small, she knew well enough from Lyrsa that they were creatures that luxuriated in comfort to the point of full-blown hoarding of the things that made them happy. Lyrsa loved soft bedding and had often taken the opportunity to divest Eireann and her father of any and every piece of soft cloth she saw fit. In fact Eireann's current travel blanket had been such a piece that Lyrsa had gifted the young woman before she left. For this reason she was hardly about to give it up to the massive dragon hovering closely, without a fight.

"A portal?" she laughed, rocking slightly in her amusement. "Hardly! It's just a bag. Why? Haven't you ever seen one of these before? Lots of people have them for carrying around all their stuff." So saying, she reached into the small pouch again up to her elbow, rooted around inside it for a bit, and then this time pulled out a very fluffy down pillow.

Xibalba narrowed his eyes at her, snorting more smoke before he sat up straight again. 'Of course I've seen bags. Do you even realize how long I've lived? Stupid human child,' he muttered childishly, pouting and turning his back to her ever so slightly and curling his tail around himself in an agitated manner.

'Just never one so small that could fit a whole blanket- And...pillow,' he added distractedly, still watching her out of the corner of his eye. 'Must be some magical trickery going on, right?'

"No," she stated blandly, blinking up at the dragon as the smoke puffed out into her face. Eireann quickly returned though to continuing on with her business as if the massive creature was not trying to throw a temper tantrum beside her. She had absolutely no idea how long he had live. But given his current penchant for the dramatics she had to say either a very, very long time or really not long at all which certainly did not help to put things into perspective.

His comment did make her snort though as she took to fluffing her pillow and spreading her blanket out over her lap. "It's not trickery. It's just a simple enlargement spell." Eireann shrugged and flopped back to lay down comfortably in her new makeshift bed. "Speaking of you though, who are you again? I don't think I caught your name earlier."

There didn't seem to be anything simple about that. He was curious what else she might have tucked away in such a cavernous thing but his attention was drawn to the much more pressing matter of her not even knowing his damn name. The nerve of this girl! How dare she make a visit to the mountains without even knowing the locals! It was downright rude.

'You really must not be from around here,' he observed smugly. 'Not just the silly little Charaden but...the mountains. The dragons here are well known. Well, the smart ones at least.' He paused, turning again to study the way she built her little bed in his own nest. Curious, he reached out to hook one claw into the fluff of pillow beside her head and give it a tug.

'I will not share my name until I have one to call you by, human-food.'

Her head thunked against the bottom of the nest with the sudden loss of her pillow. Grunting in frustration, she reached to unhook his claw and yank it back for herself. "Of course I'm not! I'm not even from this country! I came to Adela to seek out dragons. It's certainly not my fault you're reclusive enough that the villagers have no other name for you other than some unsavory ones that I truly hope are not actually true otherwise your mother would have had an extremely unfortunate sense of humor."

She mused on that notion for several moments, allowing herself to giggle softly at the idea of the massive dragon being named something as silly as The Rat With Wings. "For the sake of propriety though, I am called Eireann. Eireann Lehr to be exact. And you are?"

He did his best dragon pout when the pillow was taken away from him. She really was a killjoy, wasn't she?

'I can only assume they did not speak my name to you for fear of drawing my attention upon their pathetic little town. But I was born with my name, it wasn't given to me by my mother or anyone else.' It was a difficult concept to explain but he didn't really see any reason he should go out of his way to do so at that particular point in time. She was there to be his toy not receive dragon lessons.

'I am Xibalba. I will assume Lehr is your surname and I may call you Eireann... No, that's much too long. Too girly for you. I will call you Eir,' he decided, feeling quite smug and hoping he might at least be able to get under her skin and annoy her with a nickname.

She hummed in contemplation of his name even as a small smile lit up her features at being given her own nickname by the dragon. Eireann considered it quite an honor especially as she too found her name to be too girly for her own more adventurous tastes. She absentmindedly readjusted her pillow before reclining back down on it once more. "Xibalba," the young woman murmured softly, rolling the name around on her tongue as if to taste its exotic flavors. "I think I'll call you Xi instead. Sounds less pompous that way." Eireann grinned cheekily up at him as she moved her hands to lace behind her head.

Well that backfired rather explosively. The dragon actually growled at her. How could she not complain?! Was it really such a pleasant idea to be called a stupid nickname by her captor? She seemed completely unfazed!

He fell silent as she voiced his own name, though, and then his nickname, one he'd only ever bestowed usage upon the noblest of creatures who'd earned his respect. Given his name it wasn't exactly a mystery, but he'd never allowed anyone to call him by it that was not a trusted ally.

'That isn't acceptable,' he stated plainly, expecting her to just leave it at that and call him by his proper name instead.

Eireann yawned loudly and shook her head. "Whatever you say, Xi." She burrowed more comfortably down into her newly claimed section of his nest before yawning once more and closing her eyes tiredly. "Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to sleep now. I've had quite a long day today what with the traveling then the epic flying and truly a girl needs her beauty sleep if she doesn't want to be a real dragon in the morning so catch ya in the morning." She waved a hand tiredly in his direction then rolled to her side, pulling the blanket up to her chin and the pillow firmly against her shoulder.

The dragon practically recoiled to hear her use it again, huffing loudly and rumbling his displeasure as he watched her get settled. She'd just made herself at home, hadn't she?

He stared, watching and waiting until her breathing slowed and he was certain she was asleep. Only then did he reach out to her again.

Hooking the blanket on a claw he pulled the fabric back and carelessly tossed it aside to lean in close over her. He studied her stupid, dragon-proof chainmail and determined where it ended and began. Brushing his snout along it, he latched onto the hem of the annoying metal and started yanking it up away from her thighs.

She was out like a snuffed candle and oblivious to the dragon's mischief. That is until she noticed the sudden chill seeping in from the absence of her warm blanket and the tickling slide of something along her side. Instinctively Eireann lashed out with eyes closed. Her balled fist connected solidly with Xibalba's snout as she tried bat him as one would a fly. She grunted her displeasure at being disturbed while trying to curl further in on herself for warmth. Her hand turned to flailing about in search of her blanket and it was only as her search came up with nothing dos she wake enough to sit up. The young woman glared venomously up at the dragon without fear or care for she was a woman whose sleep had been disturbed and her blanket of warmth stolen. She did not take such offences lightly as was evident by her growling tone as she demanded to know the whereabouts of her possession. "Where is it?"

He'd managed to lift it to her hips by the time he felt the sharp thump of her fist to his snout. Huffing wildly and eyes flaring wide he gave a low rumble of warning as he watched the waking human flail about. How dare she lay her hands on him! He was sure his poor face would be tender in the morning for that.

Of course her worry was not about the metal caught between his fangs. He gave a short swish of his tail and firmly wedged the blanket between himself and the edge of the nest.

'Didn't your 'dwarven spiny' whatever teach you any manners?' he demanded in a huff, choosing to ignore her question in favor of milking his extremely mild "injury."

"Didn't your mother ever teach you any?" she hissed back just as fiercely. "You don't just go around stealing people's things, chewing on their clothes," she thumped him on the nose again to make a point, "or waking them up. Now where is my blanket Xi? Do not make me ask you again!"

He gave a muffled roar, the purposeful bashing a little too comfortable in his eyes for a human to be doing to him. Green eyes flashed in warning, tail swishing in irritation as he defiantly continued to nibble at the offending mail like a teething youngster.

'It's my blanket now,' he informed her venomously, giving the tunic another sharp tug. 'And so is this.'

"Oh no it is not!" She argued back heatedly as she was suddenly thumped flat on her back by his tugging. Undeterred by his shows of aggression though, Eireann quickly sat up and leaned her face in as close as she could given her current position. "Release me this instant and return my blanket, Xibalba!" The woman ordered. To driver her point home she slipped a hand under his chin allowing her palm to slide against his scales until her fingers jabbed rather determinedly against his gullet. She was not about to be pushed around by the overgrown winged lizard. She from experience knew that I'd she caved to his whims now then he would forever bully her later.

Green eyes flared wide and he grunted in discomfort for the fingers suddenly stabbing against some of the softer spots upon his scaled body. He had to admit this girl certainly knew dragons. Or maybe was just a lucky guesser.

'You will pay for this,' he warned her, slowly releasing the offensive chain mail so that he was free to yank his head up and away from her hand. In doing so, though, he leaned back on his haunches to keep the blanket trapped against the sides of his nest.

'Sleep, human,' he commanded, 'I will deal with your foolishness tomorrow, when you're awake and can truly know the err of your ways.'

Eireann lifted her chin in cool defiance, completely refusing to cow in the face of the dragon's threat. "I shall not sleep until you return all that is mine to me. Either return it to me now or come to terms with the fact you will never be able to make good on your little threats." She stared fiercely up into his stormy green eyes as if to challenge him into submission herself. Instinctively her hand clasped about a small pendent about her neck that had slid out from under her tunic during Xibalba's antics.

'Never?'

Xibalba rumbled in warning, craning his neck once again to put his face right in hers. 'What makes you so foolishly believe you hold such power, Eir? You are in my den. You will follow my rules or die by them. Your life is mine. There are very few things I am asking of you and the longer you withhold them the shorter your life becomes. It is not a threat, it is a fact.'

He studied the way she clutched at something near her throat, head angling to puff another curl of smoke in her face as he looked at it, curious if she was about to brandish some sort of weapon at him. At least that might be entertaining.

"And you," she hissed angrily, getting right up in his face without fear of the consequences, "woke. Me. Up. All bets are off Xibalba. I have done nothing but offer you respect and kindness in your own home. I did not ask to be taken. You chose that. I did not make demands of you even until you disrespected me by stealing my things and disturbing my sleep. It is you who has disrespected me here, your home or not I deserve at the very least the same common courtesy I have shown you. If I must die for it then so be it!"

Eireann growled as she flung herself to her feet in fury. "But I will not be afraid of a petulant, tantrum-throwing child simply because he is a dragon and believes himself to be grossly superior than myself. Now you will return my missing blanket to me and there will be no more further talk on this subject that we can leave behind us, or," she paused to get her point across while looking deeply into his eye, refusing to back down, "we can continue this ridiculous arguing until you're ready to behave like a proper adult. Do I make myself clear?"

He wasn't quite sure how waking her up had earned him her wrath but he made note of it anyway. This young human seemed rather testy over something so simple as a cover for sleep. He could have silenced her, easily crushed her skull and eaten her right there. Blood in his nest was awfully inconvenient to get out, though, and he still had the nagging feeling that this girl would have her uses to him. She was more or less a slave after all.

'This isn't over,' he stated simply, moving to stand before he swished his tail back to hook her acursed blanket along its ridges. Gently bringing it forward he turned slightly to hold it out to her over the appendage.

She rolled her eyes at what she perceived to be more posturing than anything else. Nevertheless when he returned her blanket she took it gently and thanked him sincerely. Eireann hugged it close, burying her face into the soft fabric to breathe in deeply the scent of home. It helped to soothe and calm her somewhat frayed nerves.

"You know though," she piped up softly, her words slightly muffled by the blanket until she lifted her head from it to look up at him tiredly. "You'd be far more likely to get what you want if you just communicated and asked. Just food for thought."

The dragon tossed his head a bit at that, turning to settle back down for rest, curling his tail and neck around himself in doing so. In his mind it was not his place anymore to be patient or gentle. He took what he wanted because asking nicely was still asking and he felt that was beneath him.

'It is not my job to tell my prey what I want from her. She will keep me entertained satisfactorily as instructed or die,' he stated simply, choosing not to divulge that her resistance and fiery determination had proven enough to sate his curiosity for the moment. He would pose no further threat to her for the time being at least.

"Oh prey," she commented in an enthusiastically sarcastic tone of voice, "why didn't you just say so? Forgive me oh great and terrible Xibalba. I had no idea!" Eireann dropped into a dramatic bow, rolling her eyes as she did so. "You're a funny one, you know that Xi?" The young woman shook her head and chuckled softly to herself as she gathered up her things and relocated herself closer to the black beast's massive head. There she plopped down her pillow and attempted to curl up beside him so that they each laid in the opposite direct yet parallel to each other.

He felt her moving about and gave a grumpy huff for the feeling of her disturbing his nest around him. How dare she mock him so and then try to snuggle up so close. It was disgraceful! The girl truly had no manners, no real ones at least.

Lifting his head sharply he butted up against her side and pushed hard to try and shove as much distance between them as possible.

Eireann grunted as she was bodily shifted a good few feet from where she had intended to sleep all at a grumpy dragon's whim. She simply rolled her eyes and allowed it though. It was not a battle worth fighting when she already had several victories under her belt. As her father had always taught we her it was never wise to test Lady Luck too harshly or else like any good woman she'd turn on you as fast as lightning.

Instead she rolled over and resettled herself for deep sleep. It was therefore not long at all before her breaths deepened, her body went limp, and the start of a gentle snore filled the cave from the fiery little human with a chip on her shoulder.

With the human woman more or less away and no longer resisting him, as he saw it, Xibalba tucked his head under a wing and slept at last. The dragon's sleep was relatively peaceful, though a few curls of smoke billowed around him for the fire of his dreams.

Once the shadows of morning descended upon his mountain home he was quick to untangle himself and leap from the nest, uncaring what happened to the girl as he sought to stretch his wings. Padding to the mouth of the cave he unfurled his wings and allowed himself to glide down, winding east around the mountain to a small ledge where he could perch and watch the rest of the sunrise as he looked out upon his handiwork and the remaining settlements along the mountain range.

She grumbled as Xibalba's stirrings disturbed her and one of his wings brushed her blanket off her on his way out of the cave. Without looking, Eireann yanked her soft blanket up before rolling into the newly vacated and much warmer spot in the nest left by the dragon. She was back out in a matter of seconds without a care in the world.

It was not until later when there was nowhere in the nest for her to roll to escape the sun's welcoming morning rays of sunshine that she was forced  into groggily awakening. A quick perusal of her surroundings revealed a lack of dragon within the vicinity causing her to shrug to herself before plopping back down flat on her back. She swung her legs up to rest her heels on the edge of the nest while lazily pulling out from her little bag some of her recently purchased carrots to gnaw on.

Once the sun was well and truly risen he trumpeted a cry into the valley below, head raised proudly as the sound echoed between the mountains. Swooping down and circling back in a tight maneuver, he clambered up the shelf at the mouth to re-enter the cave. He kicked a few rocks loose but climbed up successfully to peer into the depths where he assumed his human still slept.

Xibalba roared with a short but rather shrill sound, raising his head high as he listened to it bounce along the walls of the cave and hoping he could rouse her rather abruptly as he followed it to approach the nest. 'It was rather rude of you to stay the night, you know. I don't remember welcoming you to my bed.'

The echoing roar followed by the sound of tumbling rocks had Eireann tilting her head back to view the mouth of the car. She was just in time to see Xibalba block out the morning light with his girth before he was letting loose and ear-piercing, hair-splitting, headache-inducing shriek inside the hollowed den. The human grumpily winced, her relaxed expression turning into a pinched and highly displeased one as she allowed her head to rest flat against the bottom of the best again.

"It is also rather rude of you to bellow in the ears of your prey. How else am I to hear your instructions of entertainment? Besides if you didn't want me to stay the night then you shouldn't have brought me up here or should have eaten me already. Speaking of which, carrot?" She asked thrusting her arm up straight into the air to offer said vegetable to the dragon.
Title: Re: How to Tame a Madman [Goblin]
Post by: Juno on March 23, 2016, 06:11:33 AM
Xibalba sat down with a dull thump, bowing his head to rest evenly with her much smaller one as he observed her lounging in his nest.

'It's a carrot,' he pointed out, as if she hadn't just told him what she was eating. He wasn't stupid, he knew what humans grew among their crops, but it was puzzling how she'd procured something like that. Had she left somehow? He didn't remember the scent on her the previous night, he definitely would have noticed.

Humoring her, he snapped up the tiny vegetable and awkwardly held it between his teeth for a moment before tilting his head back to let gravity do the work for him as he swallowed it whole.

'I meant my nest. Why did you stay the night in my nest. Humans can sleep on the floor, can't they?' He was mocking her, but he was also ready to let the issue lie. The dragon was more displeased that she seemed to have an endless supply of surprises than anything.

Eireann breathed a soft sigh of awe, having not expected the dragon to take her up on her offer of the vegetable. "As well as any dragon I suppose," she replied with a simple shrug of her shoulders as if there was nothing unusual or mocking about his question.

"So," the young woman declared, pausing to stretch her arms high above her head and moan softly in relief as she stretched and popped before linking her arms behind her head in a posture of complete and utter relaxation. "What's for breakfast then?

Xibalba tilted his head at her, eyes narrowing sharply for her obvious refusal to answer him. Properly, at least. 'You will be my breakfast if you do not shape up,' he warned her, huffing smoke again as he turned to pad past the nest to the deepest and darkest section of the cave where he kept some of the few material belongings he possessed.

'I will hunt,' he decided, tone rather casual, 'You have already eaten those... things, right? You will sustain yourself?'

"Oy!" Eireann shouted in offense as she quickly sat up and flexed her arms. "I'll have you know I'm perfectly in shape, see!" She pulled back her sleeves to better display the lean lines of definition in her upper arms.

Her antics were quickly abandoned though as curiosity got the best of her. She quickly walked herself over to the edge closest to where the dragon had wandered off to as she squinted to try and see what he was up to.

"Well you tell me, how sustaining was the carrot for you? Not very. What's over there anyway? Do you have your own personal hunting paddock or something back there?" Eireann giggled at the idea of the massive dragon playing at sheep farmer for the ease of eating close to home.

'A hunting paddock? No.' He snorted at that, swishing his tail at her, lifting it to put in her face to block her from following but not trying to use any force against the young human. 'It is part of my home and I would appreciate it if you didn't go poking around like it's yours to explore.'

After a bit of deliberation, though, he determined it might just be easier to feed her than to deal with her whining. 'I will bring back scraps for you,' he promised after a moment. With that decided, though, he was quickly turning again to lumber past her and head towards the mouth of the cave. 'Stay here.'

The young woman recoiled slightly in surprise at having a large scaly tail suddenly thrust in her face but it did not deter her entirely from trying to see around it and into the darkness. "Well couldn't you just take me with you? Would certainly keep me from feeling tempted to explore in my boredom."

She eyed the tail in front of her critically, already feeling the curiosity of boredom quickly taking hold of her as if the mere mention of it drew it up in force. Quickly making up her mind, Eireann suddenly latched onto the dark tail as he attempted to leave and began nuzzling her cheek against the cool scales as she once again hugged Xibalba. "Please?"

He froze at the sensation of her hugging his tail. Actually hugging. It was very strange and he was quite certain nobody had ever managed to do such a thing to him. Ever.

The dragon practically rolled his eyes at her pleading, though, seeing it as childish for her to want to be taken along for such a thing. 'I don't think you've ever seen a dragon hunt before. It is not something I would ever just "take along" a human to witness,' he protested.

Then, hoping he might be able to scare and intimidate her, he continued on. 'I eat them, you know. Loudly. Not with a knife and fork like some human. With claws and teeth. Sometimes while they're still alive. Just guts and bones everywhere,' he sneered.

"Not a dragon as large and magnificent as yourself, no. But what's the problem? You've got to eat same as everything else. Besides I don't think there would ever be a fork and knife large enough for you." Eireann released Xibalba's tail to make a small hand motion of cutting imaginary food with imaginary cutlery. "Imagine it! Tiny little fork and knife and you trying to be all dainty with it!" She doubled over with laughter at the very notion of such silliness. "Really now Xi, if you're trying to scare me off then you're doing a piss-poor job," she declared while looking up at him with a form of determined sense of awe. She had been hoping to meet a dragon like him all her life. She certainly was not about to let his attempts to chase her off to fetter her sails. "Please?"

He huffed and snorted, deeply offended at the idea that he would ever try such a thing in his natural form. 'That's ridiculous,' he complained, hunkering down defensively for the human woman's laughter. He wasn't quite sure how she'd managed to make fun of him in his own home. Again.

'I wasn't trying to scare you,' he lied, 'I was merely informing you of the realities of dragonkind and the consequences for yourself should I choose to take you along.'

It was quite a predicament, though, he realized. He would not be able to hunt while holding her in his paws as he had before. At least, not without risking serious injury to her or making it cumbersome for him to carry extra. Though she claimed to be unbothered, he figured he might accomplish something with her by sheer force if she had to witness it. 'You will join me, but I will hear no complaints,' he warned, curling his neck around to look at her eye-to-eye. 'You risk your safety and your life. I will not catch you if you fall, I have no use for a weak human.'

With that he stepped a little closer to the mouth of his den before turning to the side to block it with his body and hunkering down again. He threw his head towards his shoulders, lifting his wings slightly so she might not be tempted to grab onto them and instead use his foreleg to hoist herself up. 'Climb on.'

Eireann stared at Xibalba in awe, completely taken aback and at first disbelieving of what he was offering her. The incredibly massive and powerful being was offering her a proper dragon ride and it stunned her completely speechless for a full minute. Only once her brain was able to catch up did she launch herself over the edge of the nest and across his den to his side.

She slowed only as she came within a breath of him as if to check one last time if he had changed his mind. Eireann had not even considered using his wings to climb on and completely ignored attempting to use his foreleg. Instead she carefully approached his hindleg  to swing up over his haunch and onto his broad back.

"Almost ready!" Eireann informed him as she nimbly raced up his back while trying to avoid falling off or knocking into his wings. From her experience with her own familial dragon at home, she knew just how delicate and sensitive the appendages could be when some uncareful child gave them an unwarranted tug. Only once she settled herself in front of his wings with her legs straddling either side of him and her feet locked in above his forelegs to keep out of his way did she finally pat the smooth scales of his neck.

"Is this alright for you, Xi?"

The black dragon gave a series of short grunts and huffs of annoyance, as if her slow, gradual presence on his back was the biggest inconvenience imaginable. He watched her from one eye, head tilted to observe the, to him, odd way she chose to climb up and get herself settled.

'Yes. Thankfully I barely feel your weight,' he informed her, lowering his wings again to fold loosely at his sides with the danger of any unwanted tugging already past. It was an odd sensation, though. He couldn't even remember the last time he'd done such a thing and wondered if perhaps he never had before.

There was an odd sense of warmth that didn't come from the physical contact. An oddly comfortable feeling coiled within him like a dancing flame waiting to burst free. He wondered if it was his fire, if he should take care to expend some of it while they were out.

'Remember,' he began again distractedly, 'no complaints from you about this.' And with that he was turning to face out towards the great emptiness beyond his cave, looking out at the expanse of air between his and the next mountain.

His claws tapped anxiously along the rocks, gripping on as he eased himself out, craning his neck as though afraid he might fall while practically teetering on the shelf.

Leathery wings slowly unfurled and he pressed them forward to rise and fall gently along the current shooting up along the mountain. With a short, chirping cry he let go, allowing himself to fall forward before practically pouncing onto the unseen draft that would lift them higher, up and away from the comfort of his home.

With his paws free Xibalba curled them comfortably against himself as he glided along with the currents, black wings flapping sparingly, just enough to keep them smoothly airborne as he darted through the mountain range.

He didn't dare turn his head. Making any move to "check" on the young human was an obvious sign of concern, he thought, and of course he had none of that. But for the first time in his life the drive to reach out to a human nagged at him, curious if she was enjoying it despite how he'd only offered to try to scare her. Unbelievable.

"Well if it's only barely," she teased impishly. Eireann was a massive ball of wired nerves. She was all but dancing on the dragon's back in anticipation of a proper flying experience. It was like festival season and her birthday all rolled into one. Not even Xibalba's grumpiness could dampen her mood.

The pause before he was suddenly launching them both into the air was literally breath-taking for the young woman. For a few peaceful moments she was stunned into silence as her stomach plummeted to her boot-clad toes. But, it was not to last as Eireann threw her arms into the air, her knees locked tight against the dragon's powerful body as she crowed loudly in pure joy. Not even the cool, stinging wind against her face or the flapping of her long bangs behind her stole the beauty of the moment from her.

Placing her hands securely yet gently upon his scaly shoulders, Eireann leaned her body forward to be nearly flat with his long neck. "Can we go faster?" she all but begged him with the enthusiasm of a young child. "This is amazing!"

Her shouts of glee quelled any hope he'd had left to frighten her properly. He didn't want to admit it to her, but he realized he'd made a mistake in choosing to take her out.

He heard her small voice over the slicing winds, finally allowing himself to tilt his head to study the human huddled upon his back. 'Faster?' She must have been insane. How could anyone possibly enjoy such a thing so much? She was a fragile human perched upon the back of a dragon that could very quickly choose to end her life if he wanted and she wanted more? In his years he'd lost almost all sense of thrill in flight, the only vestiges remaining being the sensation of utter freedom within the skies and the comforting stretch of his wings straining to keep such a beast airborne.

'Has anyone ever told you you're insane, Eir?' he prodded, voice booming with mirth even as his wings beat to accommodate her request almost automatically, an action that caught him off guard once he realized he was obeying an "inferior" creature.

Trying to shake himself of the nagging thought he righted himself and angled into a lazy dive as they exited the mountains, careful to remain high above the few hills that still reached out to them from the ground.

Xibalba surveyed the ground, eyes sharply focused on his real task as he took in the sight of the multi-colored specks upon the ground he knew to be the unsuspecting livestock of man.

"Not since last week!" she shouted back, the widest of grins splitting her face nearly in two. The extra speed forced her to squeeze her eyes shut against the wind and press her cheek against the glossy smoothness of his dark scales. If she thought it could not get any better, she was sorely mistaken. Diving was a whole new and thrilling experience that she hoped to have the opportunity to enjoy more and more in the near future. "What's for breakfast then?" Eireann called to him as she peered over his shoulder down at the indiscernible shapes below.

The dragon snorted at her witty remark, in disbelief that she wasn't shocked enough to wipe that facet of her apparent personality. Her continued interest in the activity he'd meant to be frightening was a little disheartening.

'Breakfast...' He pondered that, still peering down at the scattered animals upon the ground as he leveled out. Somehow he was surprised at how effortless it was to carry her, even small as she was. He barely felt her upon his back but he didn't think he'd ever tell her such a thing, he expected it would only encourage her to ask for such a thing more often, though why he was thinking about that -the future- he had no idea.

'Cow or horse,' he decided, then added almost mockingly, 'What do you think?' Even as he said it, though, he was already angling into another lazy dive to take them closer in, circling a large stretch of pasture and watching impassively as several of the mentioned animals turned to look skyward towards the dark beast.

Undeterred by his mocking tone, Eireann actually contemplated his question. "Well," she began, "nag always tends to be a bit tough and chewy even fresh or so I've heard whereas steer is certainly plumper and juicer. Either way though I'm sure either would make a fine treat if you're looking for a bit of a lazy start to the morning. They're certainly easy prey for a lesser being let alone a dragon such as yourself. If you're looking for more fight though I'd recommend the herd of deer I saw a few days ago that aways."

She pointed off in the opposite direction towards the thicker treeline. "I saw some new fawns that I'm sure would be extra tender and delicious if you have a more delicate palate than the common livestock veal."
Title: Re: How to Tame a Madman [Goblin]

Xibalba turned his head to see where she was pointing to but her proposal sounded awfully inconvenient. 'No,' he said simply in answer before going on to explain, 'their young are small. Even the adults are a little small. Small means it will take more time to gather what I need of them. I would rather just have a single larger beast.'

He wouldn't deny that he was quite lazy anyway but he felt that went without saying. 'So a cow then,' he decided, reflecting upon her own opinion and finding himself in agreement with it.

With his mind made up he brought them even closer in until the specks of before finally looked like actual animals in shape. He surveyed the herd in the distance, taking note of both young and old alike before selecting a cream-coat heifer in the middle that was without a calf at her side and didn't look pregnant. He dove swiftly, determined and focused, purposefully making no specific sounds to alert them to his presence as he might if he'd been in a different mood.

He plucked the cow easily enough from the rest, struggling for just a moment to stay airborne as he adjusted for her weight. It was easy to ignore the sudden wailing from both his prey and her herd alike, he'd done it so many times before that there was no emotion to killing for food. Without care for the human upon his back he allowed his hunger to take over, landing a little awkwardly after gliding past a few more hills. He dug in immediately, quickly snapping the heifer's neck to silence her and end her life moments before his claws tore messily through her flesh. He wasn't quite sure where to start, nipping at bits and pieces of exposed meat before settling into her shoulder for the leaner parts. He curled himself around his prey, silent aside from a low rumble of appreciation as he allowed his hunger to drive him and set the pace of his morning feast.

"Suit yourself," she replied with a slight shrug. Given that he was doing all the hunting and flying, she hardly was going to complain when food was food. Eireann did have to practically bite her tongue to keep silent in their descent though. The joys of flight still had not become old to her yet and her first instinct was to crow with delight again. She did not think though that Xibalba would have been pleased to have his prey sent into a tizzy prematurely by her squealing and screeching.

His shifting to accommodate the cow did cause a slight giggle to escape her as she could only imagine how he looked from the ground trying to lift his fresh cargo. But, when they landed again the young woman kept still and silent for several long moments. She observed closely how he looked after his meal before digging in and was rather surprised to see how rather merciful he was in comparison to his grand talk of being vicious and grotesque earlier.

From her perch though she eventually began to gently rub the scales of his shoulders while still remaining mounted. Eireann did not relish him trying to eat her for interrupting his meal if he was so inclined. "So could I have a bit of the flank or even the sirloin then? I don't mind waiting for you to finish of course. Just hungry too," she reminded him kindly.

Instinctively Xibalba rumbled a warning growl at the sound of her voice, but he was quickly silenced by her gentle question. Despite there being no chill he shivered slightly at the gentleness of her touch, unused to the action of petting, though it was entirely foreign while eating.

He paused, lifting his bloodied muzzle from the carcass to crane his neck to look at her directly. Truthfully he'd forgotten that aspect. Human toys never complained or asked for anything for fear of death, yet this woman truly seemed to have no fear of him at all. He wasn't used to having anything to take care of besides his own needs so he was a little taken aback as he looked between her and his meal.

He wanted to be greedy, despite his good health. He wanted to say that the whole cow was his and he needed every ounce of meat from it. But...how much could a human really eat anyway? It had been so long since he'd eaten in that form himself he truly couldn't remember. 'You would eat raw meat?' he questioned seriously, still debating it but turning to bow his head to his meal once more.

Eireann met his gaze, undeterred by the gore upon his muzzle, though she did keep her eyes somewhat lowered so as to not be seen as a challenger for the dragon's food. She patted his shoulder twice before ceasing her petting so as to not irritate him further.

"I don't eat it raw, no. But I'll cook up my small portion. There's no rush. I'll gladly wait until you're finished." She could not help herself though as she began to chuckle at her next thought. "I won't even bother you for a bit of flame for my cooking fire. Go ahead and eat though," the young woman urged, gently patting his neck again before remembering herself. "I'm sure it tastes better fresh and warm than cold."

His eyes narrowed at her, somehow still unhappy even though she was (in dragon terms) being incredibly, perfectly polite.

'You may have some. After I'm finished,' he decided, returning to feast from the carcass but careful to leave a sizeable portion of her mentioned cut on the body and left alone. Truthfully it was far too large, enough to feed a human family, but he'd forgotten how much or how little they could eat having not really bothered with feeding any humans in recent history.

'You know... I'm perfectly capable of providing flame for you,' he noted, not realizing just how annoyed he'd been that she'd rejected an offer before it was even made, as if she didn't need him for anything. More than that, it was that she had free reign over decisions that affected her. She was his toy, so why should she not be made to play by his rules?

'What do you have against it?' he wondered.

"Of course," she replied, having expected to wait for him to have his fill before she even has a chance at it. It was for this reason that Eireann remained perched upon his back as it would ensure that he did not suddenly think that she would attempt to make off with his meal before he was done with it first.

Her eyes widened though at his questions regarding his fire. She was nearly positive he had taken her declaration to heart as a grave insult which was far from her original intention. "Nothing against it at all! On the contrary I simply hoped to keep from inconviencing you with my necessary human limitations. I did not think that you would appreciate me demanding use of your wonderful skills for such a menial task. By all means though if you desire to assist in such a task I would be most appreciative and grateful."

Xibalba rolled his eyes, thinking it impossible she was genuinely that concerned over not inconveniencing him. He still had trouble believing she had some sort of respect for him as a dragon. He was still a stranger who had technically kidnapped her, so he questioned her sanity still.

He licked at his muzzle and pushed at the carcass with one paw to set it aside. 'You can have the rest. I get warm, so you may want to get off my back,' he prompted her with a bored snort, not really caring either way what she did but thinking it was fair to warn her.

Unable to see his eyeroll, Eireann had no idea about te attitude the dragon was giving her behind his back. Seeing how much meat he had left for her though nearly had her eyes falling out of her head. It was far too much for a single person.

"You're sure you don't need more? I didn't mean to put you off you're meal oh great hunter. There is no need to sacrifice so much on my account I assure you. I- wait!" She sputtered finally catching onto his warning. "What do you mean you get warm? How does eating make you warm? And how warm exactly do you get, Xi? I'm not going to be popping off like corn in a kettle am I?"

'No, nothing like that,' he huffed, wondering just what kinds of things she expected of him to even be asking that. 'I meant my fire, not the eating. I can't imagine it would be terribly unsafe.' After all he wasn't oblivious to the history of his kind, how many of his brethren submitted themselves to the whims of man as strange battle steeds. He didn't think it could be too dangerous if that was something that happened regularly enough.

'I don't need any more, but... Well, you don't have to eat all at once,' he pointed out, not seeing an issue in carrying the rest back for her. It would at least keep her from complaining about a lack of human food, though why he was even concerned with that he had no idea.

Without another word he shook his head and took a step back from the carcass. He exhaled deeply and without drawing in another breath allowed his inner fire to rise up and spout from his opened maw. The cow was quickly engulfed in flame as was a bit of the grass around it, but it didn't take long at all for him to blacken the whole thing to a satisfying char. How else could she possibly want it cooked?

Pleased with his work he slowly let the fire die off, licking at his fangs for a moment as he allowed the last of the smoke to be expelled through his nose.

She felt a bit silly for not thinking about his fire in such a way but let it go as quickly as she thought of it. Xibalba had been right; he did get hot. Eireann found herself running her hands across the scales of his back and shoulders in front of her to feel the heat spreading through his body. She was so focused on the sensation of what was going on beneath her that she all but missed his impressive fire display in front of her. The young woman only noticed that it had even occurred when the scent of charred flesh reached her nose.

"You set it on fire!" she squawked, sliding off his back quickly to examine the carcass closer. "Xi!" Eireann whined, turning to look at him with a bit of a pout before sighing and smiling. "We're going to have to work on that a bit in the future me thinks." Shaking her head to keep form laughing she absentmindedly added, "thanks."

'Of course I set it on fire!' he complained incredulously. What else was he supposed to do with it?! Wasn't that how humans cooked? His memories were fuzzy but he definitely knew fire was involved. And it had such a nice char to it, too. Shame.

He focused on one particular word, though, her backhanded insult to his "cooking" forgotten. 'Don't go getting any grand ideas about your future,' he warned, snorting in irritation but not taking it any further than that. 'That was a favor, not going to be a regular thing.' Probably. 'If I were you I'd be more concerned about how you're going to convince me to keep you alive until tomorrow.'

Eireann rolled her eyes at his complaints and warnings. "If you may recall you volunteered the fire. I was going to do it myself. As for tomorrow," she shrugged, "well this is more than enough food to keep me fed for the next couple of days so as long as you aren't going to eat it and don't want it going to waste and stinking up your den then you might as well keep me around just to save you the hassle of dealing with it more than you have to.

"So," she declared, turning to face him fully, "now that that's out of the way, did you want me to eat this here or did you want to head home and have me finish it up there?"
Title: Re: How to Tame a Madman [Goblin]
Post by: Juno on June 12, 2016, 12:01:05 AM
Briefly he wanted to make a snarky remark about how he wouldn't have to worry about it if he simply refused to bring the food along or killed her outright before heading home to his den. Somehow he doubted she would ever allow him that. But why was he even concerned with what a crazy human woman would and wouldn't allow? That was ridiculous on its own.

'If you are hungry now as you said you were you can eat now,' he insisted, tapping a claw upon the ground impatiently. 'Or I will go home and...I guess you can eat there instead.' His seeming inability to just order her to do one or the other was worrisome.

Xi snorted his frustration, shaking his head in quiet contemplation before hunkering down closer to the ground and adjusting his wings to allow her to climb on if she wished to.

For several seconds she blinked at him in surprised silence before giggling softly. "I do believe you completely managed to not answer my question." Her stomach gurgled though loudly, demanding that if at all possible that she not wait any longer than necessary to eat. "Well I suppose that answers that though," she laughed harder.

Before skipping over to the the still smoldering beef Eireann turned back to Xibalba and once more gave him a firm hug. "Thank you for food!" she cheerfully declared. Plopping herself down in front of it, she slipped a small knife out from her belt and began to meticulously cut away strips that were small enough for her to chew. Disregarding proper etiquette and the temperature of the meat she easily busied herself with munching on it happily.

"So good," she moaned between bites as some of the red juices leaked down her arm to her elbow. Despite her prior concerns the dark outside had hidden a perfectly juicy and pink inside. Xibalba had cooked the cut of beef to perfection. "Thank you!"

Again he wanted to snap at her for what he saw as attitude, her playfulness seeming more like snark to him than anything. His sour thoughts were silenced by her hug, though, the unusual contact shocking the dragon as much as her genuine happiness.

Why should she even be happy about the stupid cow? He rumbled with uncertainty as he watched her cut into the meat that remained on the carcass, surprised by how she seemed so happy with such a simple thing as food. Had she not eaten in a week or something?

'It is just fire,' he reminded her, uncomfortable with the idea that he'd done her any favors. 'Just lucky, I guess. Have you not...fed on meat in a long time?' he guessed, somehow feeling a pang of pity at the idea.

Eireann happily cut more meat for herself, wolfing it down without any ceremony as if it was the best thing she had ever eaten. "Not fresh meat," she answered between gulping bites. "Mostly dried meats and if they were fresh certainly not beef. A few rabbits and birds will satisfy but nothing beats good juicy, tender cow. Mmm!" She moaned her delight as she licked her lips and fingers while continuing to gorge herself. "You know the road is a fun place to be but the comforts of home that allow for a good roast are sorely missed."

He listened with interest, trying to contain his disgust at her choice of diet. It did not seem fitting at all in his mind to have such small creatures, even as a human. He felt validated in his feelings just from watching the way she ate like a starved woman.

'Is that your way of saying I make you feel at home?' he wondered curiously, hoping that was not the case as he'd been doing his best to make her situation uncomfortable. In his mind at least he had been.

She paused in her eating as she began to deeply contemplate his query. "You know I actually hadn't thought of that. Now that you mention it though I guess you might be right. It's at the very least a nice holiday. Thank you for that!" Eireann beamed up at him, her eyes dancing with happiness as she finally polished off the last of the food she was able to consume. With a hearty groan, the young traveler flopped back into the grass and placed the back of one arm over her eyes and the other over her rather round stomach. "So full," she declared lowly. "So good!"

His eyes widened in surprise, not at all expecting her to answer that way. Somehow it made him feel he was doing an extremely poor job, he never wanted to be thanked by a human for anything. He was Xibalba, he did no favors.

With a snort he lowered his head closer to her body in the grass, snorting hot air as he sniffed at her like he had any chance of scenting out what he'd done for things to be so wrong and sideways. Tilting his head he studied her stomach for a moment, looking between the remains of the carcass and her a few times.

'Full? You look pregnant,' he complained mildly, brushing his nose to her arm as he hunkered down into the grass. 'If you are done we must leave,' he prompted her, a little annoyed he needed to remind her of it with his plans so obviously fallen apart.

"Food baby," she sighed tiredly as if speech alone was too much of a physical effort for her. Weakly Eireann patted her full belly which let off a rather solid thump. Mumbling she added, "moving isn't feeling rather plausible at this particular moment in time, Xi." The young woman shut her eyes again and groaned, wishing she could curl in on herself but feeling too bloated to do so. "I don't feel so well," she murmured in a slightly pained voice.

Xibalba huffed in agitation, standing quickly and pacing around her. He couldn't believe she'd overeaten like some child with no self-restraint. 'Then you shouldn't have eaten so much,' he scolded, his mind's voice still displaying a bit of his tension and irritation with her.

'I am leaving,' he declared stubbornly, pacing a bit more before he suddenly fled from the pasture, launching himself into the air. He circled her, green eyes glowering at the human female as he climbed higher and higher. But then...he suddenly felt compelled to bring her along.

He descended again, hovering a little ways above her, giving a short bellow as he contemplated how to lift her. In the end he simply swooped in, scooping her up between his forepaws before lifting away from the ground in a few powerful flaps of his wings, fully intending on carrying her all the way back to his den that way.

Eireann waved after the dragon as he took off. "Bye!" A mighty yawn broke her speech before she continued, "I'll catch up with you after!" She had no sooner said that though then the dragon was trumpeting back at her and swooping in to carry her off back home. "Or not, I suppose." The human shook her head in disbelief and settled in for the short return journey. "You could have left me you know. I would have crawled back eventually."

He angled himself towards the home he knew by heart, rolling his eyes at the woman's words. 'I know you would that's why I had to do it. If you had to crawl back yourself I have a feeling I would never hear the end of it. I didn't want to subject myself to unnecessary pain.'

Xi truly didn't understand why she seemed to actually enjoy being lifted up and flying at what to others probably would have been terrifying speeds, though. Perhaps she was just very good at hiding her fear, that was all he could really assume about the strange woman besides that her eyes were obviously larger than her stomach.

'I'm going to set you down now, please don't vomit in my den if you can help it. Would be messy and you'd be the one cleaning it up,' he warned her, very gingerly setting her down at the rocky entrance to his mountain home while struggling to keep himself aloft and steady.

She laughed, knowing it to be true. Had he left her she most certainly would have returned and with a whole slew of complaints as well. Her arms still spread out though to enjoy the wind flowing around them as they flew home. There was not a single trace of fear in her for this. Flying was quickly becoming her most favorite activity in the whole world.

"I think I'm good," she assured him, rolling out of his grasp and further into the den so that he could get through as well. "Seems the fresh air did some good. What happens to the rest of the carcass though? Are you going back for it?"

At the mention of the carcass the dragon snorted and scoffed, a low growl rumbling in his chest as he landed and got himself righted on the floor of the den. 'Go back? It's leftovers now. I'm not a desperate scavenger that must keep his rotting food beside him at all times or lose it and starve. I hunt when I want, I eat my fill. Lesser creatures may eat after I'm finished with it,' he explained, tossing his head in agitation at the mere suggestion, though it had been a fair one.

'I'll allow you to go back for it if by some miracle you're still hungry after gorging yourself. But we ate there and as far as I'm concerned it's staying there.'

"Bit of a waste though, don't ya think?" she commented, completely unperturbed by his superior attitude towards hunting and food. Eireann patted her distended stomach contentedly. "I believe I won't be hungry for a couple of hours at least. I've got myself a nice food baby cooking right here. But what about you? Given the amount of remains, I doubt you gorged yourself to the extent I did. Will you be hungry again soon?"

'No. I'll eat when I'm next hungry. Maybe a tonight, maybe tomorrow.' He half-raised his wings, stretching them slightly in the space of the cave before settling them back against his body and moving closer to his nest. He eyed her stomach as he passed, silently curious how she might ever find more room for food by day's end when she'd gorged so much already.

'Why does it matter to you? Humans are not normally so curious about me as long as they know they won't be my next meal,' he pointed out with a huff, climbing into his nest and curling himself against the worn hollow inside.

Eireann snorted at his remarks before very carefully rolling up onto her hands and knees. "Since when am I most humans? I am dragonkin. I am no mere pitiable," she declared boldly before groaning as her stomach gurgled in protest of being overstuffed. "Mistakes were made," she softly added as she began to extra slowly crawl her way over to his nest in hopes of climbing back in and curling up.

"You can't fault me for asking. Since when aren't dragons interested in boasting about themselves and their narcissistic habits? Sure you're not going to eat me but have I really thrown you that much off your game?"
Title: Re: How to Tame a Madman [Goblin]

Xibalba snorted his disapproval, shaking his head for her accusations. He was not narcissistic and he was not "off his game" as she'd put it. He settled against the side of his nest, neck draped over the side as he watched her struggle of slow crawling. She seemed uncomfortable, possibly in pain, and he didn't understand why she was putting on such a front about it.

'If you were dragonkin I would know. Don't be ridiculous with your humanlike delusions. Magic is one thing, dragons are different. We are creatures of magic, not party illusions,' he stated, assuming she'd meant some rudimentary form of making herself look or seem a dragon. He'd known some mages to hold such abilities before, but they were different, they were not dragons by birth.

"I have no delusions. I am no party illusion or trickster. I am dragonkin whether you like it or not. I am the daughter of a dragon and will take no further insult to my upbringing, especially not from such a noble creature such as yourself who should know better."

Making it at last to the edge of the nest, Eireann dragged herself to a standing position and clung to the edge that was level with her shoulders. "Now scoot," she demanded to the face so close to her own. "I want in too."

The dragon rolled his eyes, snorting hot air towards her as she ascended his nest but refusing to move as she demanded. Instead he just blinked lazily as he watched her, his eyes glowing dimly. 'If you were dragonkin I would be able to tell quite easily. Noble creatures...like dragons, have a particular scent. Even when they do not appear as themselves. Your father told you quite a lie there about your mother,' he added the last with another snort and a rumbling chuckle of disbelief.

'I will allow you to join me if you find your own space. I do not move at the command of a human woman,' Xibalba sneered.

Eireann huffed at his reply. She was right and he was wrong. If he did not believe her then that was his own fault. While it was true she had absolutely no idea who her real mother was and her father never told the same story twice concerning her, Lyrsa had been mother enough for the woman when she was growing up. Lyrsa had been around since Eireann was a baby and had indeed raised her as if she were one of her own young dragonlings. The human woman would not hear otherwise from anyone about who and what she was. Lyrsa said she was dragonkin, so dragonkin she was.

Grumpy with the massive dragon's refusal to move, she made the decision to climb up anyway. It took a bit more hefting than usual to drag herself up but after a few bounces of of her legs she managed to perch herself on the edge of the nest. Instead of tumbling into it though she chose to very carefully but very determinedly climb onto the dragon's head. She was quick in her scuttling, fearful of him suddenly shaking his head but also resolute in having her bit of mischief. If Xibalba was going to refuse to move then she was going to climb him too. She plopped herself down on the crown of his skull, feeling quite proud of herself though she suspected at any moment she would be rolling back off with his first attempt at dislodging her.

He watched with amusement sparkling in his eyes as he watched her struggle to get to the top of the nest. It was entertaining, like people-watching in the villages as the drunkards stumbled about and argued among themselves. Eireann's boldness surprised him, though, catching him off guard as she climbed up his scales like some disobedient child climbing the roof of their house after their mother told them not to. The small weight against his scales was hardly anything, though, and caused him no pain or discomfort. If he was being honest with himself her lack of fear was intriguing.

'What are you up there for? Am I to be your horse now? Like some unintelligent herd animal that doesn't know any better than to let themselves be told what to do?' he sneered while making absolutely no move to dislodge her. The dragon sat still, mostly trying to see what rise he might get out of the human woman in whatever defense she chose.

Eirann smirked at his questions. She could not help quipping back in return either. "Giddy up, Bessie!" She could say no more though as the young woman quickly dissolved into giggles at daring to say such a thing to a dragon. But, she would most certainly defend her doing so by readily pointing out he was the one that made the initial comparison so how could she be at fault for playing along?

"I think you know plenty better though," Eirann soothed once she could catch her breath again. Leaning forward so that her hands pressed against the scales of his forehead, she smoothed her palms across them and marvelled at the texture of them. "Dragons will do as they please no matter what you say to them. As for me I'm just along for the ride. Pardon the pun," she added with another giggle.

Still rubbing his scales in gentle circles, she could not help but smile despite her extremely full belly. "I thought with larger scales you'd feel different to the touch. Seems little dragons and big dragons share this in common though. You're so smooth when petted in the right direction!"

His eyes widened with a disbelieving snort at her gal to say such a thing to him, but he didn't find it truly offensive. He understood that she was being playful, though why he could not even begin to understand. Was she truly unafraid of him? Were her instincts so poor?

And yet...her words were wise for someone so young. It soothed his nerves to hear that she acknowledged his independence, though why it helped to have that kind of validation from a human he could not explain.

Perhaps she was good for something, though, she seemed to know just how to pet along his scales. The gentle pressure was calming and he gradually relaxed under her attentions. 'Maybe you do know something about dragons,' he mused. 'Do not think I will allow you to sleep atop my head for this, though. I will not be shrieked at when you eventually fall down.'
