Atachii was propped up on the make-shift bed, swathed in sheets and looking grim. She sat with arms crossed over her chest, staring out the door. Every so often a twitch of pain would register on her face, making quite the scary scowl flash across her features. Looking down, all she could see was her swollen belly, pronounced even further being wrapped in off-white sheets tucked tight around her. Inside she could feel that little life moving, though she guessed it really wasn't that little anymore. What a strange sensation, the swaying of a body within a body. It almost made her smile, before another flash of pain lit through her. And, she knew exactly who to blame for that: Yuuki.

Her glare practically glowed with lividity as she stared out the door. She knew the bastard was out there somewhere.

   "How are we feeling, Miss?"

Her head turned to the left, as she remembered there was someone else in the room. The young girl stood at her bedside, smiling down at her. Atachii studied her face, but she couldn't tell for sure whether the girl was really so kindly, or whether she was just hiding her judgement really well behind that practiced expression. Working and living here, in a sanctuary, she knew they were expected to welcome all manner of people. Atachii couldn't fathom that a human being could be so unbiased. At that point, she was pretty sure they weren't human at all. I mean, what were people without flaws, anyway?

She opened her mouth to answer the girl, and at that moment a wave of excruciating pain crashed through her. Her eyes bulged open almost unnaturally, and she grabbed the girl's arm with a grip so tight she could have cut off the blood flow. Atachii had never experienced pain like this. Ever. And she wanted it to end, now. But, just as suddenly it was gone, and as it cleared from her brain Atachii knew what it meant, knew what was coming.

Whatever anger and pain she had mulled up in the last little bit all turned to fear in that moment, transparent in her eyes as she looked up at the slightly concerned eyes of the young girl.

   "It's coming."

She said it like she was predicting the apocalypse.

"O-oh! I'll fetch someone right away, just... Hold on, I'll be right back," the girl finished hurriedly and bustled off down the hallway to find someone else, someone who could deal with the situation more appropriately than she could.

Atachii sat, waiting, sweat beading on her forehead, consumed by nerves. She didn't like being in these situations. Situations she couldn't control, situations of uncertainty. She heard pattered footsteps hustling down the hallways as another wave of pain rolled through her, tearing up through her throat and out from her lips in a pained cry, a needed release.

Yuuki had a new sword. He'd gotten it special made in the last city they stayed in. The man thought he was insane, but no, Yuuki was quite the manly man and needed a mans sword. He ran the cloth over the metal and sighed, content, treating it like a baby. He hadn't killed anything with it yet. Not that he really wanted to.

Of course it dropped right down into the grass when a scared looking girl ran out of the building Atachii was in. Oh god, did this mean what he thought he meant?

Enemies!

Yuuki bolted into a standing position and a look of pure fear and worry crossed his face. He heard Atachii scream! His child and she could be in danger! Yuuki grabbed his sword, holding it over his back for optimal chopping motions and head-lopping. Of course he stormed into her room and just stood around and stared, a frown on his face.

Atachii looked pissed and sweaty and tired and like she had just run a marathon. Which was silly because she'd been laying there the whole time. Yuuki stared at her for a moment while he put his sword away and pursed his lips. If it wasn't enemies, and Atachii hadn't run around that could only mea-"Oh my GOD." Yuuki put his hands to his head and his eyes went wide, "You! You! You're having the baby!" He moved to rush to her before he pulled his hands back. "I need Niaaki." He stared ahead and swallowed before he pushed his hair back, "call for a nurse! I'll be right back and you can scream at me and break my hand! I promise!"

Yuuki blew her a kiss before taking off down the hallway, where the hell was Niaaki? He would be better at dealing with this, right? Niaaki was... Girlier! That meant he knew more! Right? Yuuki ran a bit, he was out of breath and his face had a sheen of sweat on it before he found his little friend, "Niaaki!" he called loudly, "Oh gods, Niaaki. Atachii is about t explode!"

Everything was so beautiful here. Peaceful. Tranquil. It was really nice to be able to just relax for a change, to not have to worry about drow pursuing or freezing to death or where they'd find their next bed. It was safe here, and quiet--

"Niaaki!"

Niaaki flinched and, reluctantly, cracked his eyes open. He had been resting just outside the building that Atachii was inside, stretched out on his back in the grass with his arms folded beneath his head, basking in the warm sunlight. He should have known it wouldn't last long. There was always something where Yuuki was involved and, sure enough, the guy looked panicked. With a sigh, Niaaki opened his mouth to speak, ready to ask what idiocy his friend had gotten up to now, but Yuuki was faster.

"What?" Niaaki blurted, eyes going wide, and he jerked upright like an anthill had opened up beneath him. "What do you mean 'explode'? Yuuki, what did you do to her?"

And then it clicked.

What hadn't Yuuki done to her?

Cold dread washed over him and his throat seized in panic. He grabbed Butch up off the ground and held the doll like a lifeline. "Oh, no. You mean...she's...ah! Well, what are you telling me for? Where is the midwife? This is a healer's college! Surely they have midwives!"

Atachii had pushed every inch of sheeting to the end of her little bed, pedaling her feet to try and distract from the pain. It wasn't working. As she clenched and unclenched her fists around the balled-up sheets, she was screaming. She didn't care if the whole damn sanctuary thought she was being murdered. Hell, she felt like it! Hadn't that girl gone to get somebody? Somebody who knew how to deal with this. Underneath the screaming and writhing, Atachii's heart was a ball of panic. She didn't deal well with not being the one in control, especially of herself.

The pain subsided for a short moment, and an elderly woman with a time-lined face bustled around the corner, the young girl from before trailing behind her.

"Ah, the baby's coming," were the only words the woman said to Atachii before she groggily watched the woman haul her legs apart and take a front-row seat at the end of the bed. Now, this was embarrassing.

The feeling didn't last long as another wave of pain shot through her and she screamed again. The sound was starting to tear at her throat, and the bed and Attachi were both soaked in sweat.  Somewhere on the edges of her lucidity Attachi heard the young girl yelling at her to "Push! Push!" and she had no other will but to comply.

As Atachii felt the pressure of the baby, she saw Yuuki appear at the side of the bed and glared. She hadn't seen or heard him come in, but that didn't matter. Her hand reached out in a vice grip, curling the front of Yuuki's shirt and wrenching him down to face level.  The look on her face was a scowl like she'd never given, but before she could open her mouth to tell him how much she loathed him right now, the pain took over her body again and she curled in on herself, screaming, pushing, pushing, screaming.

Atachii had no idea how much time passed. She couldn't keep track of it while she drifted in and out of truly being coherent. That was, until she heard a choked cough, and then the crying of her baby. Collapsed on the bed, barely thinking of anything but sleep, Atachii smiled as the old woman handed her the little bundle wrapped in fresh linens. It was crying, almost screaming at her, and Atachii held it closer, pressing her lips to the baby girl's warm forehead.

"I know the feeling."

Atachii looked up at Yuuki, and couldn't help but smile at him, too.
