Leaning back against a settee in the lounge she'd been ushered into, Beatrid fiddled absently with the end of her long braid and made pictures of the cracks in the ceiling.

Awkward.

That's what this whole situation was. Oh, and uncomfortable. Awkward and uncomfortable, yes. On the plus side, at least Beatrid wasn't the only one who felt that way.

She and the other three soldiers with her had been welcomed inside the Korrii Estate and had been treated like nothing but honored guests, but there was still a notable undercurrent of tension there. Over her twelve years of serving as a Mordecai, Beatrid had become quite adept at picking up on it. Servants scurried here and there, some casting nervous glances her way, sometimes curious looks, sometimes glares, and Beatrid generally ignored them except to grin over-enthusiastically and with all her teeth at the annoying ones that stared a little too long.

That tended to send them on their way.

With a bored sigh, Beatrid pushed off of the settee and started to pace the floor, feeling restless and out of place. She wasn't worried about her safety here; it was a diplomatic mission, and any harm that befell her would reflect on the lords here and that would be politically very...messy, considering she'd been sent here to escort one of Featherfall's own diplomats. Nah, safety wasn't an issue and besides, she was pretty confident in her ability to kick some ass if anything went down. No, it was just, well...she'd never been to Serendipity before, much less this deep into it, and it was a little...unsettling. Sure, it was no secret that Serenians were so...open about their magecraft, but knowing something and experiencing it were two vastly different things.

Worse yet?

Mages had no markers, no embroidery sewn into their clothes to identify them from anyone else. How could they live like that here? Didn't they realize how dangerous that was?

No, of course they didn't.

The sooner she got out of this crazy, backwards country, the better. Of course, there were niceties to deal with, meet-and-greets to do, and as much as she wanted to just get back home, it was a long journey and she knew she needed rest. So did everyone else.

Beatrid ran a hand through her sweat-greased bangs and smoothed down her dirt-stained tabard (she hadn't worn armor on the trip, for ease of travel trumped pomp). Maybe a bath, too...

But first, introductions. Whenever they got here.

Adelaide paced her room, her long hair a mass of silky black curls down her back. Her maid had a long suffering look on her face, waiting for her mistress to sit down and let her finish getting her ready.

But Adelaide was too nervous to sit still long. She smoothed her hands down the shimmery cloth absently, lost in her own thoughts as she chewed at her lip. They were here. The Mordecai from Connlaoth. Mage killers. That she was going to have to go off with. They wouldn't kill her....unless she used magic. Which she would be careful not too. But it was still terrifying.

And, just...how could a country live without magic? "It really makes no sense Emily. I mean, really. They must live in....huts!" She always pictured Connlaoth as some backwater nation, filled with dirty soldiers and...mud. Adelaide always associated mud with poor people.

"Miss?" Emily gave her mistress a confused look, not knowing what she was going on about, "We really should finish your hair..."

"What?" Adelaide paused, blinking her large eyes, looking more blue today thanks to her dress, "Oh. Yes. Right. Hair. Oh Emily! What's going to happen?" She gave a dramatic sigh and flopped onto the backless chair in front of her cosmetics table. Emily moved behind her and started the long process of pinning the mass of black curls into a flattering and intricate style on Adelaide's head.

Once she was finally ready, the noblewoman headed downstairs. She knew she was late and her parents were not going to be pleased. But she couldn't help it. She had thrown up into the chamber pan already, too nervous to keep anything down. But she was ready now. Taking a steady breath, Adelaide stepped into the room and she took brief notice of the other knights, her eyes drawn almost instantly to the most heroic, stunning and magnificently beautiful creature she had ever seen.

Even the stains of travel could hide her brilliance. Adelaide forgot the breathe, not really listening as the introductions were made. She murmured replies on automatic, her eyes never leaving the tall, dark woman. Beatrid Al'teir. Even her name was wonderful.

Her voice was slightly breathless, pale cheeks flushed as she gazed up at the powerful knight, "It's an honor. I am sure to be in good hands with you." Oh please, please, please let her be in those hands. Her blush got a little darker and she stood on tiptoes, pressing her lips to Beatrid's cheek in the customary greeting, fighting the urge to meld her thick curves against Beatrid's hard body.

All the fear from earlier was gone. Adelaide couldn't wait to spend time with this woman. She had made up her mind. This was the person she was giving her maidenhead too!

Beatrid immediately stopped pacing and respectfully stood at attention when the lady and her escorts arrived. Introductions were made, names exchanged, and Beatrid went through the motions like it was some ritual she'd done a hundred times before. Boring stuff, this, and everyone trying so hard to act like nothing was abnormal or awkward about this entire--

Eh?

That was when Beatrid looked at the girl, Adelaide. Really looked at her for longer than a glance. The girl was staring at her, still as a rabbit that had heard a dog--only not quite so, because she didn't look the slightest bit frightened. She looked...fascinated? Beatrid arched an eyebrow and shifted her weight. Was she even blinking? Starting to feel a little uncomfortable, Beatrid cast a look behind her just in case she was missing something, found herself looking at a wall, and then looked back feeling twice as perplexed. She felt like she was missing something obvious.

...Was she blushing?

Oi, Serenians...so bizarre.

Beatrid kept her own expression composed and professional and gave her a polite, formal bow. For all the hassle some people back home gave her for her abrasive personality and sailor's tongue, if there was one thing she could be it was formal when the need arose. "The honor is mine, m'lady. I won't let any harm befall you."

The cheek kiss made her blink and furrow her brow in confusion--it was almost Connlaothian, but far, far more familiar. But one could expect that from Serenians, she supposed. She straightened back up and cleared her throat. "Are you packed? We'll be leaving in the morning--if that isn't too soon for you. I apologize for our delay in getting here. We had some trouble in the mountains and were delayed."

M'lady! She called her M'lady! The fact that she was supposed to call her that was irrelevant. Coming from Beatrid, it was musical. Adelaide flushed darker and beamed at Beatrid. The woman looked every inch the solider. Adelaide could just picture her fighting off a swarm of bandits before whisking her off to ravish her. Just like in her books! And she had said she was going to protect her!

Adelaide gave a small, dreamy sigh, still gazing up at Beatrid when she realized the other woman had actually said other things. Blinking rapidly, her brain scrambled to catch up and Adelaide nodded, moving to wrap her arms around Beatrid's arm, shoving it against her ample cleavage, "Tomorrow is fine by me! I'm all packed. Really, I can't wait to get on the road. You'll take extra good care of me, wont you Beatrid?" Adelaide glanced up at Beatrid through the dark fringe of her bangs, keeping her arms tight around her arm.

She should probably be paying some attention to the other guards, but she only had eyes for Beatrid, "You must be starving! We have a meal ready for you." She started off toward the dining room, ecstatic at being so close to the older knight.

The fact that Beatrid was a Mordecai and hunted down magic users had totally left her mind, replaced with her girlish ideals of knights and damsels and romance. The dining area was extravagant, with elegant carvings and paintings along the walls. A huge table stood in the center, waiting to be filled with food.

It was only with great reluctance that Adelaide let go of Beatrid's arm, taking her seat and motioning Beatrid to the seat next to her, "You had trouble coming over? What kind of trouble?" She frowned slightly, chewing on her lip, "Will we run into any trouble?" She couldn't use her magic to defend herself if they did meet bandits. For several reasons. And Adelaide wasn't really much of a physical fighter.

Though, she did love the idea of being rescued by Beatrid. Gathered against her by those muscular arms. Those callused hands running over her skin. Adelaide had to repress the urge to shiver with delight at those thoughts. Focus Adelaide! Focus!

As Adelaide crushed Beatrid's arm against her body, Beatrid couldn't help but be hyper-aware of just what her arm was squished against. Was she...was she aware of that? Oh, like it mattered. They were both women and...this one was certainly clingy.

And, shamefully, Beatrid found herself caught somewhere between not minding it one bit and feeling like she should find a way to weasel her arm free, and good God she had to have no clue what she was doing. That look! That sigh! No, this was just an innocent, silly noble--a Serenian, no less; it figured her head would be in the clouds--and apparently Mordecai excited her? Huh...well, she supposed that could be expected of a sheltered individual, right?

"Of course, m'lady," she said, letting the girl lead her along and, for the moment, letting her keep her arm. Right. It was only proper that she should offer her arm, and come to think of it...it was sort of her mistake that she hadn't done so to begin with. "You don't have to worry about a thing. Everything will be taken care of, and between me and my partners, well...nothing can get past us, I'll just leave it at that."

And finally, the dining room! Ahh, alright, this was her favorite room in the house already! Beatrid eagerly took her seat and only then was she reminded of just how hungry she was. She hadn't eaten since that morning.

"Mm?" Beatrid glanced over at Adelaide at her question, then gave a shrug. "Ah, a little. Nothing major, m'lady. Just mountain bandits," she said, slipping up and letting a dark scowl cross her features. "Thought they'd get the jump on us, but we put those fuckers in their--"

She froze, eyes going wide, and cleared her throat. "Uh. Excuse my Common, m'lady. My tongue got away from me. Er, right, as I was saying, mountain bandits. Mostly, they just stirred enough shit--uh, caused enough hassle--to keep us distracted for a little, but that's it. Anyway, they shouldn't bother us on the way back," she said with a shrug. "And we shouldn't have any trouble. Like I said, if we do, my partners and I are fully equipped to handle it and keeping you safe is our primary objective. Upon my honor, we'll get you to Connlaoth without a scratch."

There it was again! M'lady! Adelaide had to resist the urge to fan herself from all the excitement. It really was just like out of one of her books. Her heart must be pounding a mile a minute! Beatrid was just so strong and brave and wonderful.

Beatrid's language slip caused Adelaide's eyes to widen slightly and she tried to cover up her laugh by taking a sip of water. It was rather cute watching her try to not swear. Granted, Adelaide really wasn't used to hearing people swear often, but she wasn't offended by her. Though after the second slip, her ears were stained slightly red.

While she didn't really fit the image of Serenian beauty, Adelaide still very much was one. And she had finally found someone she was interested in. Taking a deep breath, she leaned forward, just enough that if Beatrid were to look over, she would get an eyeful of cleavage, "You are fully equipped you say? That makes me feel much better."

Well, she was a little rusty on flirting. She didn't really do it often and she desperately racked her brain for ideas on how to show interest without hurling herself at Beatrid like some common harlot. Though that method did have some appeals right then.

Reaching over, Adelaide set her delicate hand on Beatrid's forearm, "I am quite sure you'll keep me safe on our trip together."

Beatrid's eyes dipped down before she could help it and--yeah, the girl must not know what she was doing! She jerked her eyes back up and focused them on her face, fighting the urge to look down again (because oi, she had a nice rack...diplomatic mission, diplomatic mission, professionalism!) and mustered up a polite smile even though she was cursing like a sailor in her head. Fuck, she wished she would sit back up! But it must be a mistake. Did she realize how low-cut her dress was? She was about to spill out!

It was always that much worse when they didn't even realize what they were doing...at least when they knew, she didn't have to feel like some old, creepy lecher.

But that was rare. Most times, it wasn't intentional. After all, girls didn't do that.

When the girl touched her arm, Beatrid gave a small jolt and cleared her throat. She hoped it wasn't too obvious how fixed she was on the girl's face, but God above, could this be any more awkward? "Very safe. You'll be well taken care of, m'lady," she said, and reached for her own water so she could throw it back like alcohol.

She could have used some of that.

It didn't help that the girl was pretty.

But also Serenian and a diplomat! They needed a subject change, badly.

"So..." She set her water down and folded her hands on the table. "Have you ever been to Connlaoth before?"

Adelaide was starting to worry a little. While the men with Beatrid didn't seem to have a problem oogling her chest, the one she wanted to be looking seemed dead set on keeping eye contact. Her dreams of Beatrid sweeping her off her feet in some daring rescue were starting to crumble around the edges. Was she not interested? That thought was rather crushing.

Then Adelaide rallied. Of course! Beatrid was just being a gentleman! Er...lady? That didn't seem to fit the knight. Gentleman suited her much better. But, regardless! Beatrid was just respecting her! Right? That had to be it. Adelaide didn't want to be the only one feeling this spark between them.

She was slightly puzzled when Beatrid suddenly downed her water, "Uh what? Oh. No. I have never been there before. I'm very eager to see it though. My family and I are glad to help smooth out relations between our nations. And of course keep those trade route open and flowing."

Please think I'm pretty. Please think I'm pretty. Please think I'm pretty.

Adelaide knew it was silly, but maybe if she thought hard enough at Beatrid, it would sink in.

Rhindeer

"Yeah. Trade routes," Beatrid murmured, still maintaining eye-contact. "Keeping trade open is important." Oh shit, that sounded horrifically lame and stupid. But what was she supposed to talk about? She never had been the most prolific conversationalist, and the girl's cleavage was distracting. This had to be the most awkward meal she'd ever attended.

Mentally scrambling for something intelligent to say, she cleared her throat. "Well, I think you'll like it there. It's nice this time of year, agreeable. Very, uh...green." God she wished the girl would cover up!

"Oh, yes. Very." Adelaide really didn't want to be chatting about all of this boring stuff. That was for later, when she was stuck in stuffy rooms with stuffy people making sure they could trade without the barbaric murdering practices of Connlaoth getting in the way.

Determined to not be ignored, Adelaide shifted a little more, trying to not be, well, tarty about it, but she wanted Beatrid to notice her. She didn't have a lot of charms to throw around, but she was trying. Her mother had always assured her that some people did like girls with curves and the noblewoman was sending desperate mental waves at Beatrid that she would be one of them.

"Oh? Really? I've never been, never even seen pictures." She smiled, trying to gaze demurely through her lashes at Beatrid. She read about that a lot in her books and tried practicing it in front of mirrors and hoped she had it right, "Will you take me on a tour when we arrive? I want to see the city and you would be a wonderful escort."

"Well...of course. I didn't think you'd wanna lay around in your room all day," Beatrid said, trying not to puff up with pride too much. 'Wonderful escort'? Ansgar's beard, it was nice to be around someone who thought she was amazing for a change. But no, no time for patting herself on the back. She needed to remain professional. Even though this girl...was not.

It must just be a Serenian thing. Social norms were different everywhere, after all, and if Serenians were more flamboyant in their dress, obviously they would be in their behavior, too.

Still, it was difficult to shake the feeling that this girl was being flirtatious—which only further bothered her.  Goddamnit, Beatrid, you're acting just like some debauched old man that reads sex into every friendly gesture. Stop it.

She cleared her throat.

"Besides, as an ambassador for your province, it only makes sense that you should see the nation your people are dealing with," she continued, "to better understand us and what we have to offer."

Adelaide's confidence was starting to crumble again. She really wasn't sure how she could be any more flirty without being down right common about it. And Beatrid just wasn't interested! How could that be? Beatrid was the one! She knew she was! She had to be!

Keeping a smile on her face, Adelaide nodded, keeping close to Beatrid, "Oh I agree. I want to know all about the people I'm going to be working with." Was she just not pretty enough? She had heard that in Connlaoth, you couldn't be with the same sex, but that couldn't apply with Beatrid! Adelaide refused to believe that!

"That can be arranged," Beatrid said, idly wondering when dinner would be served so she could wolf it down and escape this awkward set-up. She had never been comfortable in formal situations, though she knew proper etiquette and could act her way through it, but she didn't enjoy it and always felt horribly awkward. She would rather be dining with her fellow Mordecai, telling crude jokes and eating peasant food. It tended to have more flavor than the fancy stuff, and she didn't have to watch what she said, either.

"Part of my job is to fill you in on our customs so you don't do anything rude or offensive," she added. And she was certain the Serenian would be just a piece of work. Perhaps that was part of why she'd been sent to deal with all this—she was no-nonsense and got results, and though she was known among her fellow soldiers as an abrasive bitch, she also knew when it was appropriate to bite her tongue.

"So we'll be spending a lot of time together, anyway."

Adelaide blinked at Beatrid, slightly surprised at her comment. It was a little insulting that Beatrid was implying she was going to be rude or offensive. Frowning slightly, Adelaide responded, "Well, yes. Though I have been looking into Connlaothan customs..."

Was that the impression she was making on Beatrid? That she was some empty headed girl that didn't know how to behave in some other environment? Cheeks flushing slightly, Adelaide sat back in her seat, food finally arriving from the kitchens.

Her smile returned, trying to keep positive about the whole thing, "I look forward to spending the time with you Beatrid. I'm sure we'll have lots of fun together!"

Adelaide made sure to eat lightly with Beatrid around. As much as she wanted to devour the fish on her plate, everyone knew it wasn't attractive when ladies ate too much. Adelaide never really felt that way; she thought it was cute when girls had a healthy appetite! She watched Beatrid out of the corner of her eye, trying to guess her thoughts.

Beatrid only answered with a nod, uncertain as to how 'fun' this would be, but then their food arrived and saved her from having to come up with some polite verbal response. Finally! Her stomach had been growling for the last hour, at least.

While Adelaide ate daintily, Beatrid tucked into her fish with gusto, unaware that she was being studied. While she adhered to proper etiquette and ate neatly, she also did not adhere to that bullshit 'women shouldn't eat too much' rule. Fuck that! She was hungry, so she'd eat until she was stuffed, and the fish was so delicious it seemed a shame to do anything but finish it off. Men always cleaned their plates with no odd looks, so why not? Leaving food was wasteful.

Before long, Beatrid had cleaned her plate, leaving behind only a few leafy vegetables that were apparently common to Serendipity, but which she had never seen in Connlaoth.

Adelaide watched Beatrid as she ate, impressed with how unconcerned she seemed to be. Well, it probably helped that Beatrid was absolutely stunning, so she didn't have to worry as much about what people thought of her. Adelaide's mother was always harping on her about losing weight, short, chubby girls were not really popular in Serendipity.

She finished all her greens, but only about half the fish, watching it longingly. It was so good and the sauce made her want to lick the plate. But she needed to watch what she ate. So she reluctantly pushed the plate back.

Looking over at Beatrid a bit more obviously, she gave a small laugh, arching one eyebrow, "Don't you eat your vegetables? They wont hurt, I promise."
