Juno

He'd spent the rest of the day's light finally catching up to the herd that the wolves had driven far and away from the heart of his territory. It was good to be out and about, though, it gave him something to do and he enjoyed the warm sense of accomplishment that filled his belly as he carried the body of a small cow home.

Christopher spent that night finally allowing his leopard out. The cat was fidgety and restless even when he finally settled down to his meal back in his own home. He craved a good stretch and roam about his lands, the itch to bolster his border with fresh tracks a dominating thought now that he knew of his new friend and her "family." In the black of night that was exactly what he set out for.

To the west he saw his eldest sister's trail and respectfully gave it a wide berth before circling south. To the east, though, he was disappointed to still sense nothing of his middle sister's scent. She was still gone, then. For good measure he padded out along the edges of her territory as well before he returned home once more, his leopard a bit calmer for the ritual.

The next day he gathered a bundle of gifts for Brenna, if only to make things a bit more comfortable for her. At least he hoped they might. A folded blanket and the pillow from his own bed were wrapped up in his spare coat. Well, it was actually his newest, but Nevena would probably make him another if he asked nicely.

He knew it would certainly be too large for her, but he hoped she might make better use of it than he could. If she wanted none of it he certainly wouldn't care if she let the wolves have it. At least they might get some use out of makeshift toys.

The shifter approached their den slowly and with purposefully loud footfalls so that he might not startle the more protective members of her pack. He came weaponless this time, his awkwardly lumpy present enough of a burden to carry. He hoped Longclaw might appreciate the gesture of peace, at least, though whether he might even understand it remained to be seen.

"Bryn!" he called out once the den was in sight, turning his head to listen above the crunching snow below.

Brenna jerked upright, eyes blearily with sleep and hair a messy tangle around her face. She looked toward the mouth of the cave, yawning widely. Around her, the furry bodies of her foster siblings shifted as she stood, leaving their little napping pile, and she heard them grumbling in her sleep.

Soothing them with a few pats, she smiled and made her way out into the snow. "Christopher." He had come back after all. Grinning, she padded toward him over the snow.

Shade beat her to him, appearing from behind the den and bounding forward to greet their visitor, tail wagging. Broketooth hung back, but his tongue lolled and his hackles relaxed when he smelled who it was. Bright-Eye and the alphas emerged as well, more on guard than the omegas. But Snowfur dipped her head to the shifter and nuzzled her glowering mate, making him huff and grumble.

Brenna had reached him by this point, eyeing the bundle he carried curiously. She couldn't seem to stop smiling. "Welcome...back."

Juno

The sight of the wolves that were coming around to meet him gave him a moment's pause, but there was really no sense in showing hesitation after announcing himself. The wolves had every right to inspect someone so close to their home. He was pleased, though, that the omegas seemed to remember him well enough.

Setting his bundle on one hip he leaned over with his free hand extended to Shade in greeting as he watched her approach. Somehow she seemed even more wild than the previous day, but he was glad to see the recognition and warmth in her eyes once she'd reached him. "Uh, thanks." What else was there to say, really?

Glancing down at what he'd brought her, he suddenly felt a little silly and hoped she would not take offense to the multiple signs that he was concerned for how she was keeping warm in such an unforgiving climate.

"Here. For you," he finally offered, holding it out to her. "There's a coat, a blanket, and a pillow. If you want to have them."

DragonSong

Brenna hesitated a moment, then reached out and took the offered bundle. "For- for me?" Those words were familiar, and it took a moment for their meaning to register. When it did, her smile softened a bit at the edges. A blanket and a coat were used to keep warm.

"You...were worried?" she guessed, feeling her cheeks warm. That was strange- it was too cold out for that to be happening.

Snowfur came forward then, sniffing curiously at the bundle Brenna now held. With a few low yips and a whine, the girl explained what the gift was. Giving her an arch look, her foster mother shoved her nose into her ribs, making her stumble forward a bit.

Cheeks feeling even warmer now- seriously, what was that about?- she mumbled. "Oh...thank you."

Juno

Worried? Was that the proper word? "A little," he agreed, a slightly nervous chuckle escaping him as he watched the white wolf examining what he'd brought for her. Her communication with the alpha was observed with a good deal of anxiety as he was uncertain if she might allow her to even have a choice in keeping the gifts. When the whole thing wasn't immediately torn apart he thought he could at least hope for it, though.

"You're welcome. I thought you might need them," the shifter explained. "When it's cold and the wolves aren't with you." Well that was silly, there were always wolves with her. She didn't go anywhere alone.

Curling and uncurling loose fists as he fidgeted before her Christopher finally decided to try and change the subject. "Did you eat yesterday? Will you go hunting today?"

DragonSong

"I eated." She frowned. No, that wasn't right. "Ate. I ate." She nodded toward the remains of the pack's meal from the previous day. Then she shook her head in answer to his question. "No, no hunt today."

She let her eyes sweep over his frame, noting that he wasn't carrying any of the hunting tools he'd had before. "And you? Did you hunt? Eat?" She knelt as she spoke, unfolding a bit of the bundle to take a look at what he brought.

Juno

He nodded, pleased that she'd taken care of herself in his absence silly as that was considering she'd done the same every day before they'd happened upon each other. "Yes, yesterday," he answered gently, watching her with interest for her slight exploration.

"Is there anything else I can bring you?" he blurted out, uncertain if she was even missing the comforts of a human life. "For next time."

DragonSong

Brenna blinked, a little surprised by the question. He wanted to bring her more? Next time? she found herself suddenly very glad that there would be a next time.

Beaming, she shook her head as she got back to her feet. "No. No, I not...I don't need anything." Biting her lip, she shifted from foot to foot, wanting to ask him but not quite sure if she should. They were still pretty close to the den after all.

Glancing back at Longclaw, she took a hesitant step closer to Christopher. "Want to...walk?" she asked, gesturing to the tundra. "Move away from the den. I...want to see the cat." She offered a small smile.

Juno

Hopefully her asking meant she wouldn't be so frightened by what he had to share. It would certainly put him at ease for his newly-discovered neighbor to fully understand what he was. "We can," he agreed, following her looks towards the wolves. He studied Longclaw and Snowfur as Brenna moved closer, curious if the alphas might allow her to go without complaint.

"Follow me," Christopher prompted, turning to leave by following the tracks he'd left from his arrival. He kept going even after he couldn't see the wolves anymore, wary of how they might react to him allowing his cat out so close to their "pack sister."

"Don't be afraid," he warned her, turning to give her a slightly apologetic smile. "It's still me, just will look different." He removed his top slowly, hissing slightly for the cold air upon bare skin. His shifter blood left him running a bit warmer than a human would naturally, but it wasn't enough to be exactly comfortable in the bitter cold of their harsh home.

Kicking off his boots was quickly followed by the seamless shift from man to beast, and in an instant he was gone. The spotted creature before her clumsily stepped out of the remaining clothing to stare up at her curiously. His tail swished from side-to-side in the air as he tensed slightly, anticipating a need to flee if she in fact did not find him acceptable.

DragonSong

Brenna frowned when he started disrobing, confused. Wouldn't he be cold? Then he shifted and her eyes widened.

That was certainly not what she remembered from the word "cat".

For one thing, he was quite large. Easily larger than a gray wolf, though perhaps not as big as her dire wolf family. Her mouth dropped open and she just stared for a long moment, trying to process what had just happened.

Eventually, hesitantly, she took a small step toward him. "Leopard is...big...cat," she said in awe. Automatically, she reached out to touch him, as she would one of her wolves, then paused. That strange warmth was back in her cheeks and she looked at him a little sheepishly. "Can I?"

Juno

There was such relief in her acceptance. A giant sigh escaped that startled him slightly having not realized how he'd been holding his breath for her. Light eyes studied her expression curiously, wondering what she was thinking until she spoke at last. He would have laughed if he could have but gave a short chuff of amusement instead.

Pleased that her own curiosity extended so far Christopher nodded as his answer. Instead of waiting for her, though, he stretched up to nuzzle against her outstretched hand as he drew a bit closer.

DragonSong

She giggled a bit, petting the spotted fur with unabashed fascination. "Pretty," she told him, grinning, and reached up to scratch his ears the way the wolves always seemed to like.

Caution completely faded away now, Brenna moved around him in a circle, tilting her head this way and that. After a moment she got onto all fours for a different angle, shivering just a bit when her hands sank into the snow up to her wrist.

Sitting back on her haunches, she simply stared at him with wide, gleaming eyes. Wracking her brain, she finally found a word that seemed to adequately portray her sentiment. "Amazing," she said, gesturing to his cat form. "This is...amazing."

Juno

Christopher stood quietly for her attentions, his cat practically grinning with pride over her praise and petting. He watched as she circled him, his tail flicking and ears twitching playfully as his head swiveled to follow her every move.

Turning to face her as she spoke again he rumbled his happiness and stepped closer to headbutt and nuzzle at her shoulder in thanks. He wondered if she might prefer his cat entirely considering her close relationship with the pack, but he supposed it didn't matter so much seeing as he could take whatever form was more convenient.

His markings rippled as he made a few more sounds to signal his happiness before returning to the spot where his clothing was strewn about. Looking between her and the ground a few times he wondered if she would mind so much if he was quick about shifting and dressing again. He thought better of it, though, hesitating in case she wished to lavish him with any more of her gentle petting and sweet attention.

DragonSong

Brenna laughed at the attention, wrapping her arms around his neck and burying her fingers in his fur in a move that was as much habit as anything else. She let go quickly though, realizing he might not be as fond of the gesture as the wolves seemed to be.

Still, when he just sort of looked at her, standing by his clothes, she shifted forward to sit in front of him, smiling a bit and petting his head and shoulders. "You want to be human-people again?" she guessed, scratching absently under his chin.

Juno

Ah, so she'd understood him after all.

Leaning into her scratches and pets he mewled his pleasure and tilted his head to give a few rough licks to her hand in thanks. He made a mental note to be sure he visited her often so he could at least get some nice scratches.

Crouching down at last he gathered up his clothes to hold gingerly in his teeth. He turned his back to her, playfully swatting at her legs with his tail before returning to his human form. The cold had him hurrying to dress, the young man before her now shivering a bit. "Sorry, can't take them with me," he explained, gesturing at himself as he faced her again while stuffing his feet back into his boots.

"You like the cat?" he asked, eyes twinkling with his amusement. "Softer than a wolf," he reminded her, as if that fact should have been enticing enough.

DragonSong

Brenna watched him dress curiously, not really having a sense of propriety when it came to clothing. To her, they were just used to keep warm. "Why sorry?" she asked, a little confused by the apology.

Then she grinned, nodding as she stood to be closer to his level. "Yes. Yes I...like the cat." She chuckled a bit and agreed, "Very soft." Without thinking, she reached up to touch his hair, wanting to see if if was as soft as the cat's fur. She carded her fingers through it, attention entirely focused on the pleasant texture against her skin.

Juno

Humans tended to like clothes and dislike open nakedness with strangers in his experience, and it was personally a feeling he shared. He gulped nervously. How was he supposed to explain such a thing to her? Had she truly not lived among humans in such a long time?

The way she'd reached for him distracted the shifter away from such thoughts, though. His tense jaw relaxed as he watched every move of her hand out of the corner of his eye. It was such an open and innocent display of admiration that he had trouble justifying it as any sort of true affection. He'd done the same with his sisters on occasion and they with him, it was a perfectly normal thing to do among family. But strangers?

He leaned forward slightly to allow his hair to fall forward a bit and over his shoulder, shaking it out gently to free what strands were trapped behind his ears. "Do you like my hair, too?" he finally asked, trying so hard to hide the proud smirk that twitched at his lips.

DragonSong

"It's soft," Brenna said with a smile, nodding in answer. "Pretty color," she added, withdrawing her hand for a moment to tug at a lock of her own, coal black hair, holding it up to compare the two, stepping closer as she did.

Catching the smile he tried to hide, she tilted her head and reached out to pet his hair again. "The cat likes this," she said, working through an idea as it came to her. "Does...do you like it?"

Juno

"Thank you, Bryn." Compliments felt good, even if they were innocent. He would take what he could get. It couldn't hurt anything anyway if she liked his hair so much. Well, he thought she did at least by her fascination with touching it and comparing theirs together.

"He does... I do like it, yes," he murmured thoughtfully, never really thinking of the two as entirely separate beings. He supposed that made him a little sensitive to such gentle attentions.

Christopher eyed her curiously, still watching her hand as though it was the most fascinating thing he'd ever witnessed. "Would you like me to...? Um, try that with you?" he offered, reaching a hand towards her. He hovered it at her shoulder to wait for permission, though. Perhaps years without humans had made her odd about things like touch and he definitely didn't want to frighten her.

DragonSong

She raised an eyebrow at the idea, eyeing his hand curiously. While she was hardly starved for affection- the wolves gave her plenty of that- for some reason the potential for human contact made something inside her sit up and and pay attention.

Smiling a bit, she nudged her head into his hand in a manner vaguely reminiscent of what he'd done in his cat form. She stepped even closer as she did, her concept of personal space apparently having suffered after years of sleeping in a literal wolf pile.
