Yes it is.  

I've always had cats, my parents got a little silver tabby right when I was born, and I grew up around all my grandparents cats, too.

In fact, I recently emailed a breeder's group to see if they could confirm the breed of my male cat, the whole family is really convinced he's an Egyptian Mau.
