Physical Description:
With her small, wiry build, Beryl Feyal looks slightly out of place among other nobles. She has copper skin, and a short, boyish haircut. Her eyes are a stunning shade of green, but something about them seems almost... haunted. Her ears are pointed, a visible result of her fae ancestry.

Beryl has forgone traditional nobles clothing in favor of an old Verdan battle-dress- she thinks it makes her look cool. She also doesn't wear any shoes. Hey, it's her province, she's allowed to do that.

Beryl's crown is made from cyathil, a rare metal native to her province. It has a single, bezel-set piece of aquamarine in the center- her spirit stone. She usually just carries it around with her instead of actually wearing it, since it's a bit too large and tends to fall over her eyes.

Personality:
Beryl is a quiet, observant child. While she is technically the high lady of her province, she is much too young to do any actual governing herself- her primary responsibility is to look good sitting on a throne. Beryl takes this responsibility very, very seriously, and tries her best to use proper language and etiquette no matter the situation.

That doesn't mean she's not still a kid though! Beryl has a ton of hobbies, including archery and (believe it or not) rock climbing. She loves spending time outdoors, and would probably spend all day climbing trees and looking for bugs under dead logs if she could get away with it.

Beryl reads a lot, and has a very good vocabulary- she's read the dictionary twice! She does have trouble pronouncing many of the longer, fancier sounding words, but she doesn't let that stop her from trying.

Relationships:
Beryl really has no sway over her province at all. Most, if not all of her decisions are actually made by her advisor, a man named Amitai Feigenbaum. He lies a lot, and Beryl knows it! Mr. Feigenbaum doesn't know that she knows though, and Beryl would like to keep it that way.

Beryl's parents- as well as the rest of the Feyal family- have disappeared. Beryl thinks about them a lot, and tries her best to make them proud- wherever they may be.

Beryl is engaged to Arthur Clearwater, the High Justicier's son. She's never met him, but she bets he's really dreamy.

Magic/Abilities:
Beryl has the ability to discern whether a statement is objectively true as long as she's 100% focused on the person making it. This power is difficult to activate, and when she's using it her vision goes blurry and she has trouble moving. Using it for too long can give her a killer migrane. Beryl hasn't told anybody she has this ability, it's infinitely more useful when people don't know about it.

The ability is very sensitive, and will often pick up on things like metaphors as well as lies- after all, "I'm so hungry I could eat a horse" is technically not a true statement.

  • Disclaimer: Yes, this ability means if you thread with Beryl and your character says something that isn't true, you need to let me know via PM. This doesn't make her ability absolute though! Clever use of words and lying by omission can still trick her.

Beryl has had some basic self defense training, although anybody bigger then her could kick her ass in a fight.

History:
The youngest member of the Feyal family, Beryl never had any desire to claim the title of High Lady. It wasn't even a possibility for her, really- she wasn't a member of the family's main branch, and her second cousin Ivrias was a young enough High Lady that chances of the line of secession ever falling to Beryl were slim to none. Inspired by stories of the then-budding prodigy Molly Starklein, Beryl instead dreamed of joining the Ranger Core when she grew up. She spent most of her free time playing with sticks in the woods "practicing sword-fighting", and began taking self-defense lessons at the age of ten. For a time, her life was normal...

It was a stupid argument, really. There was a chore that Beryl's parents wanted her to do, and she didn't want to do it. They yelled at each other a bit, and Beryl was grounded. "Then I don't love you anymore" were the last words she said to her parents before she slammed her bedroom door shut.

Those would turn out to be the last words she ever said to them.

Not one to take a punishment lightly, Beryl climbed out of her bedroom window that night and ran away from home. She'd somehow gotten the idea in her head that if she managed to escape her parents, she could join the Ranger Core as a junior member (this turned out to not be true). Too proud to return home, the girl spent the next two days on the streets alone.

Eventually, somebody recognized her and asked what had happened to the rest of her family. The tone of the man's voice was confusing- why did he sound so panicked? She wished she hadn't asked...

Beryl's parents- along with the High Lady and the rest of her family- had vanished without a trace on the same night Beryl ran away. Whatever had happened to them, it seemed the girl's childish act of rebellion saved her from suffering the same fate. Now the only member of the Feyal bloodline, Beryl had no choice but to assume the title of High Lady.

It's been a little over a year since that day. Beryl would like to believe her parents are watching her, and tries her hardest to make them proud- and to prove to them that she didn't mean what she said to them that night.
