Title: Waltz of the Sugar Plum Candies
Post by: visualspice on November 15, 2013, 04:58:01 PM
OOC: This Thread has come from: The Dessert Table (http://www.spiritsoftheearth.net/smf/index.php?topic=15587.msg156752#msg156752). See Rules of the Table before joining! Thanks!

----

The first dance, was naturally orchestrated by the Grand Duke and Duchess themselves- a dance where they would start it off, then all the pairs of lords and ladies would fall into line soon after them during the second verse of the song. The visor, Vesirk Delcheux, had made the announcement that this was to begin soon, and the ballroom doors were opened- finally ready for the guests to come in!

The band had already taken it's seat, and was playing a soft song of welcoming for those entering, and as the guests filed in, The Grand Duke himself remained in the center, beneath the grand chandelier as it made the floors beneath his boots sparkle. With his wife at his side, the two remained as still as statues, only watching as the other lords, ladies and dukes filed in and began to pair up for the first song.

Leaving his family to their fates in the other room, Trevian stepped into the ballroom.  There weren't many dancing couples yet, but, as the night dragged on, there certainly would be...and, with any luck, Trevian would be among them.

Assuming he ever found his wayward sister.  Really, how did a girl taller than all of Connlaoth just vanish into thin air?  Maybe she was curled up sick in a corner somewhere...  That would, certainly, keep her out of trouble...and it might even teach her a lesson, besides.

In any case, she obviously wasn't here.  Trevian turned to go, surprised to find him face-to-face once again with a certain ice queen.  Immediately, he smiled broadly and bowed, easily slipping into his role from earlier...even if the white and red tabard he had been wearing had vanished.

"Ah, my mysterious queen!  I am surprised you haven't a dozen men at your heels begging for a dance!"

There was no reason not to be polite!

Upon entering the ballroom, Lord Edward was a bit pink skinned and sweating beneath his costume, and also, it was a bit disheveled as he tried to slick back his hair.
"I think my feathers are falling out.." he commented softly, stepping into the room and scanning the crowd. He frowned a bit. "I.. I don't think I see your mother... do you?" And as he looked about , he worked at fixing the color of his blue-bird suit, then the mask.

"Yes, they are," Riley agreed, picking up a blue feather from the floor of the dance hall. Edward wasn't the only one out of breath, though. It had been much more work for Riley to keep up on the rush from the observation tower to the ballroom than it had been for Edward! Of course, Riley probably looked cuter with rosy cheeks than Edward did.

He frowned at Edward's observation and also looked around the large room, still catching his breath. Riley really was not doing a good job as his mother's escort at this ball! But at least if she wasn't here then she probably hadn't been captured by a horrible dance. What if while Riley was gone she'd been approached by some other man? And was going to be his dance partner? That wouldn't do! That wouldn't do at all... In fact, Riley found that he was feeling just as responsible for looking after Edward's night as he was for his mother's.

And he was doing much better with Edward.

"Do you think I should I go look for her, do you think?" he asked uncertainly, still looking around the room in hopes of spotting Dahlia.

Janette slipped into the dance room, her mind still reeling over that knight. Killian. He was the sort of guy she could settle down with. Maybe.  It didn't matter now. She had slipped into the ballroom, having had yet more to drink, and completely forgotten her ability to recognise anyone.

Anything that didn't clearly have breasts now became fair and equal game. The most instinctive part of her brain made sure she didn't go near the Grand Duke because of her lie to Killian. If she was near the Grand Duke, and Killian went and investigated if the Grand Duke had a niece, and the Grand Duke was asked if he did, she would be spotted by Killian in an instant.

As Janette walked by Riley she heard his voice and actually did recognise it. But she couldn't put a name to it. Instead she decided to dance. She was still perfectly coherent in her walking, but her intoxication became apparent in the misty look in her eyes, and her lack of fine-fine motor control.

And her brain decided that Riley was perfectly acceptable to dance with.

So instead of asking, it reverted to her favourite activity. Stealing.

She stole the young boy's hand, and remembered a few rules. No dancing before the Grand Duke and his wife danced.

"Care for a dance young master?"

Riley had to resist the urge to hide when his aunt Janette approached.

"Oh no..." he muttered. If he wanted Edward to like his family, Janette was not who he wanted to show up! He fidgeted, trying to decide what to do, and whether or not he should tell Edward to run. He didn't get the chance, though, before Janette had grabbed his hand. Oh boy, she was drunk, too. Janette was bad enough sober! Riley's unfiltered response was to recoil, but he didn't snatch his hand away from his aunt.

Before he could panic, though, he spotted Trevian on the other side o the ballroom. Thank goodness. Riley shot Edward a look that said 'Oh brother!' before turning very politely to his aunt.

"You don't want to dance with me, Janette, I'm far too short!" he told her brightly. "And more importantly, there was a very handsome - and much taller - gentleman looking for someone just like you! I'll take you to him."

So Riley tugged gently on Janette's hand, leading her away from Edward and across the ballroom. "I'll be back soon... I hope," he said quietly to Edward before taking off.

He at least had the good sense not to walk directly to Trevian, in case Janette somehow caught onto their direction. Instead, he took the long way around the ballroom, coming up on Trevian from behind. Clearing his throat, he tapped Trevian on the back.

"Here, look what I found."

Few couples were already standing on the dancefloor when Valentina entered the room. She mostly cleared the tears from her eyes and hoped that the signs of crying were invisible on her face. Running away from her husband perhaps wasn't he most mature decision ever, but Valentina knew that she wasn't ready to deal with the truth, or better say, lies at the time.

The music that was played was oddly out of tune with her feelings. Too cheery, too vibrant and too light. While walking around the ballroom she once again met a familiar face. Perhaps that was all that was needed for her to set her miserable mood into a better state?

"I'm afraid other men couldn't deal with the coldness as well as you did." she smiled charmingly, trying to forget what just happened outside. Although she was ready to flirt a bit more, her head was still stuck in the mess she heard earlier. The pain was making her feel numb to other feelings.

As Edward was left to his own devises, he gave one sympathetic look to Riley before deciding it might be best to hang back as a wall flower. After all, he hadn't been properly introduced to Riley's mother- nor saw sight of the red-bird beauty in costume anywhere. Sighing, he helped himself to a glass of champagne as a servant passed by and allowed his brown eyes to roam the crowd...

It was about this time Lord Davishire was dragged in by Lord Carwick, (which would have been quite the sight to see!). He had to step quickly, lest it appear as if he were actually being dragged, and sighed irritably the moment they settled onto the edge of the dance floor.
It was only here, as others began to look at them, and their eyes going to Davishire's stain that he began to feel embarrassed for it,but sheepishly so, for remembering the wine stain Jillian had given him had reminded him of Jillian herself as his eyes idly scouted the room for her.
"I don't see her.." Davishire muttered after a while. "What if I've upset her enough that she avoids the dance floor?" Angsar knew he wanted to!

((Klei's shortest post ever! Maybe! Not sure!))

Avery dusted himself off after releasing Davishire from his coaxed walk into the ballroom. Davishire fretted about Jillian's absence from the room and Avery rolled his eyes while he wasn't looking. "Oh, don't flatter yourself, Davishire. I'm sure she'll be here. Ladies love to dance, and it's expected to dance when you come to a ball. Let's wait two minutes before panicking, shall we?"

Janette eagerly followed Riley, desperate to meet the image in her mind of some gorgeous hunk with big stro- Nope, the image didn't happen, but she saw the blurred outline of what looked like an attractive man in a costume. She could have sworn that costume was familiar.

No, it wasn't family.

"Hello handsome... Might you grace a lady with a name so that I don't have to keep describing you?" Janette's eyes were misty and the wine clear on her breath. Trevian would know she'd gotten into trouble.

"Of course, not that I could imagine it would be a bad thing..."

Although Valentina did fairly well in drying her tears, a little redness remained, lending some truth to her words in spite of her beautiful smile.  Beyond her, Trevian glimpsed his sister's arrival and was relieved to see Riley had managed to wrangle her for the time being.

After all, there was a woman in need of a dance partner in front of him, and it would have been a terrible insult to her to leave her in this condition.

His charming smile returned in full force as he extended a hand in offering to her.  "It is to my benefit, then."  Once she had accepted his hand, he stepped nearer to her to add in a quiet voice meant for her ears alone, "I have heard a rumor that any other knights wishing to dance with Your Majesty would be challenged by the Jack of Hearts for the privilege..."

ADD:
Trevian didn't even notice his nephew or sister; his attentions were solely on Valentina.

Riley gaped at his uncle's back. Sometimes, and this was one of them, he just couldn't believe his mother's family. How did his in-his-eyes-perfect mother come from this troublesome bunch? Trevian might think he was busy, but so was Riley!

He cleared his throat again, but louder - or tried to, the effect was rather staged - and tugged hard on Trevian's costume. "Trevian," he protested loudly, "I'm only ten years old! You can't leave her with me!"

What did Trevian expect him to do with her, anyway? Janette was more than twice his size and she wasn't even making sense anymore! He'd thought she wasn't so bad when she'd asked him to dance, but Riley didn't understand a word of what she'd just said to Trevian!

The boy glared, then brought out the biggest gun he could think of.

"I'll tell Grandmother!"

Edward, remaining an awkward wall flower, wasn't ignorant enough not to notice the trouble the poor child was having with his Aunt. Realizing the poor boy might be stuck in a precarious situation, he hesitated a moment before crossing the room and approaching the pair.

"Riley, I do believe, being so young, that perhaps it would be wise that an older gentleman invite your Aunt for the first dance? I'm sure she would not mind allowing you the second one.." And he gave Riley a sympathetic smile before he turned sweetly to Janette, who, despite being taller than himself, seemed to unphase him as he took Janette's hand and kissed the top of it lightly.

"That is to say, my lady, if you do not mind joining me for this first dance?"

"Ooooh, such a gentleman... Mmmmm, of course I will..." If she could've shapeshifted, her eyes would have turned into that of a reptile's, eyeing up Edward as her new prey. The man was handsome, well, what she could see with the mask on.

She let the name Riley stick into her head, an realised that she had asked her nephew for a dance.

"I'll come back for a dance later Riley, ok sweetheart?" Her tone was more that of a caring aunt now that she recognised the boy. She had always liked Riley. She'd never quite known why, but she always had. So of course, stealing a dance with her nephew was only a bit of fun. If he didn't know how to dance, she could teach him. If she could remember how.

She let the gentleman take her to the dancefloor.

"Might I ask a name of you sir? Or are you going to be a mystery?"

That time, Trevian heard his nephew -- probably because his name had been used.  He half-turned, his surprise apparent, as he looked over the pair...and exhaled softly in relief when Edward stepped in to intercede on his behalf.

They had been young together, after all -- and Edward had always been a good wing-man.  Trev had repaid the favor, too, although he owed him again after this, it seemed!

"Excuse me for just one moment, my queen," he added to the woman with a long-suffering expression.  "Family.  You know how they can be."

To Riley, he explained patiently, with a cheerful glitter in his eye, "To have a dance accepted by a lovely woman is the highest honor a man can hope to achieve, and to refuse a dance is the gravest insult a man can inflict.  Now, I am a gentleman, and a gentleman never wounds a lady, so I will deal with Janette later.  Alright?"

Thank Angsar for Edward!

(OOC: Trev is on a pre-plotted course!  He'll be free to RP again as soon as he gets punched!  <3 )

Entrance from A 'Sundae' Afternoon (http://www.spiritsoftheearth.net/smf/index.php?topic=15628)

- - - - - - - - - -

It was with an uncertain tread that Oscar entered the ballroom, resplendent and mildly uncomfortable in a replacement costume, lion mask back in place to hide his rather strained expression. There was a crowd already within: a few couples on the dance floor already and a greater number gathered around the edges, which granted his entrance a little anonymity. After the drama of the evening so far and the sobbing lady he'd been forced to leave behind, he was glad for the moment of peace. He couldn't see his siblings from the door he entered, and for the moment made no effort to seek them out, instead edging around to hover by the wall, eager for a little quiet time. It didn't happen, as it turned out. Some of the players from the evenings farce had migrated in here, and Narwhal, Weasel-Cat and a new woman who was either a badger or an ill-prepared magpie descended on him.

"Oh, my dear boy, was she alright?"

"What happened in there?"

"So good to see you've come through unscathed! And what lovely new clothes!"

By Angsar's Grace, he wasn't ready to put up with this. Fixing a smile on his face, he fielded their probing questions as best he could without actually saying anything, excusing himself as quickly and politely as possible to move away through the milling guests. On another occasion, their disappointed tuts would have made him even more nervous, but middle-aged women fishing for gossip was not something he could bear twice in one evening. Not yet, anyway.

Maybe a glass of champagne would help, he thought, dodging around a woman with what looked to be a dozen lilies on her head, then maybe he could watch the dancing in peace. He did so like to watch them dancing.

All of the color drained out of Riley's face when Edward approached Janette and the boy looked on in utter horror. This was not what was supposed to happen! Riley liked Edward, and he wanted Edward to like him (and maybe his mother) and, if Janette had anything to do with it, there was no chance of that for long!

The boy wheeled around on Trevian, completely furious with his uncle. He didn't even hear Trevian's suave excuses. "I'm really mad at you, Trevian! You're supposed to be the adult!" he crowed in a childish outburst. Then in an extra-childish outburst, he kicked his uncle as hard as he could in the ankle and thundered off. He would probably be embarrassed by these actions later (especially if his mother found out about them!), but for now he was too upset to care.

Fuming, Riley stomped off the the edge of the ballroom. Oh, he would get Trevian back for this, just wait! (Maybe he was more of a Treyburn than he liked to admit!) Then he saw Oscar on his hunt for a glass of champagne, so he stomped over to him. After all, he wasn't meant to stay on his own, and Oscar was the closest family who he wasn't furious with or afraid of.

When he got to Oscar, he didn't say anything, just stood dutifully next to him, crossed his arms, and seethed.

ooc: I'll skip your last post with Trev's cousins!

Yes, Valentina needed a knight right now, a protector. It didn't matter if it was a person she knew just from a short conversation. All that mattered for her was that there was someone she could rely upon in this miserable moments. A stranger would've been welcome too! Anything that would serve as a distraction.

She glanced over the ballroom in hope her husband didn't follow her in. She was far from ready to have a conversation with him. With one more deep breath she decided that it didn't matter. Nothing really mattered in their pretense marriage. It was just a pretense.

Valentina remembered where she was and she moved the grim expression from her face. On it's place there was now again one of her ever-present smiles.

"And I wondered where all my suitors are?" she joked "My knight must have scared them away." Valentina said with a teasing smile.

Everyone was just out to ruin this ball for him, weren't they?  Trev shook his head at his retreating nephew, then turned back to the lovely lady Valentina.

"Sweet lady, for a glimpse of that smile," he caressed her cheek with a fingertip, sliding his hand gently down to the point of her chin, then lifted his hand to touch her lightly upon the nose.  "There is nobody, villain or hero, that I would not face.  If your other suitors are too cowardly to face me, perhaps this is a dragon or kraken about upon which I might prove myself worthy of this dance?"

Of course, there was no such thing...  Still, he made a show of glancing about.

"No.  Then, perhaps, in a show of mercy, you might take me as I am?"

She was surprised by his boldness to say those things, and above all, touch her so freely. But, it was also very flattering and made her feel beautiful, so she didn't bother to stop him. Actually, she decided that she rather wouldn't mind him to continue.

"You flatter me." she told him with a smile "I would never dare question your bravery, my Knight. And, if there were any dragons or monsters after me, I am sure they are all gone by now." by this time, she wondered why doesn't the only other man in her life speak like this? Perhaps he didn't find her pretty enough?

Valentina didn't linger on that thought, since it was stupid to think about things she'll never find out and things that made her chest ache.

"I am a merciful Queen." she said finally "And I feel as if I could never refuse my brave knight." her teasing smirk appeared again on her face.

Edward bowed gracefully before Janette before taking her in close as their hands linked together.
"Ah, Lady Treyburn, I do not mind divulging my secret unto you, but the identity of this blue bird is none other than Lord Edward Draven. I'm pleased to re-make your acquaintance. I do not know if you would even recall my true identity, however, as the last ball we might have attended together you would have still been just a child."
ANd naturally, his conversation was polite as he guided Janette, with grace, out onto the dance floor.

Along the side lines, Davishire was still grumbling as he and Avery remained as wall flowers, observing the other dancer's from afar.

"Well, it seems there are a lot of Treyburns here this evening. I suppose the whole lot of them came. Perhaps she just likes to be the fashionable late one," he mused as he released a hot breath, but then noticed something from the corner of his eyes that perked his interest as another Lord stormed into the place.
"Leif Arrant.." Davishire wrinkled his nose at the other man. If people thought Davishire was rude, Leif Arrant was famous for it. After all, Leif Arrant was the only man who gained a harsh enough reputation someone tried to assassinate him on his wedding day! Lucky for Arrant, the bullet had not killed...
BUt not one to gossip, Lord Callister held his tongue, but would soon be holding his breath as he witnessed Lord Arrant tearing across the ballroom. And Leif didn't care who he had run into, as his own shoulder slammed into Edward's and set he and Janette off balance in their dance. Edward managed to catch Janette as they paused in their dancing, and blinkingly, he turned to watch Leif Arrant and his situation turn into a train wreck-

For Leif Arrant's wife had just found out all of her husband's secrets in one go when she had stepped into his private conversation in the garden (http://www.spiritsoftheearth.net/smf/index.php?topic=15605.0). He had been pouring his heart out to his friend, and he had no idea Valentina had been listening in. Now she knew that he knew she was a mage- and what was worse, he mentioned 'another woman' whom he had been seeing, (evne though that was his sister!) AND the fact he was none other than the infamous masked vigilante- the masked mordecai!

He was so desperate to seek her out to explain, that the moment he caught her amongst the crowd her tore after her- that was, until he stopped dead in his tracks to witness how Trevian was 'caressing'a nd attempting to woo his wife. Rage blinded him as he paused in the middle of the dance floor to bark out a roar.
"TREYBURN!!!!!!!!!"
and the voice would have echoed had the serene playing of the orchestra not muffled it's cries. But even the Grand Duke, dancing with his wife, turned his head to witness the exact moment Leif Arrant tore across the floor- and socked his fist clean across Trevian's face.
"Get your f--ing hands off my wife!"

Oscar had finally managed to locate a glass of something appropriately fizzy when a small, fuming mass of feathers appeared at his elbow, making him jump and very nearly drop the glass. "Riley?" It was Riley, he was sure: for one thing, he recognised the feathers, and for another, no-one could sulk quite like his nephew could. He frowned, turning to acknowledge the boy properly. That he'd been responsible for part of Oscar's misfortunes that night never even seemed to enter his head. "Is something the matter?"

Everything was the matter, it seemed, and not just with this member of his family. His bellow was muffled by the music, but every eye in the room seemed drawn to Leif Arrant as he marched right for the costumed man he knew to be his brother, punching him square in the jaw. For the second time in as many minutes, Oscar had to catch himself from dropping his glass, letting out a shocked cry. Only a reluctance to leave the boy at his side kept him from rushing across to his brothers aid, leaving him faltering and dumbstruck side-by-side with his nephew. He looked to him, then to Trevian's predicament, green eyes wide.

"What on earth has been going on while I was gone!?"

Things unfolded in a complex manner for Janette. Her mind perceived this situation slightly differently. Almost in reverse. Or perhaps a personal priority.

Someone had punched her brother. No-one but her punched her siblings. Be it Cherie or Redly. No-one punched them. In fact not even she did. Not with the intent to hurt them like that.

Secondly. Someone had barged into her. Into her, Janette, the street noble. That was as though it were a direct insult to her. And it had sent a jolt of fear through her mind that was unpleasant.

Thirdly. This man had interrupted her dance with a good looking noble, with an exceptionally chivalrous and courteous manner. Not her type, but enough to have a dance and socialise with.

Some man had barged into her, interrupting her dance, to punch her brother. It pieced together in the correct order, and every instinct and centre in her brain flooded with alcohol ridden adrenaline. She could see clearer as the alcohol fuelled her, and she recognised Trevian.

Then she acted, approaching the man directly.

Whereabout in the process of going over to hit the guy she passed out wasn't clear to her.

((OOc: Lol, until someone remembers about her, Janette is out now))

Audric is entering from Dark Chocolate Eclairs (http://www.spiritsoftheearth.net/smf/index.php?topic=15605.msg158669#msg158669)

-----

Audric, who had followed Leif in from the garden, was a step behind -- but too slow to actually stop him from swinging at Trevian Treyburn -- or screaming his name like a buffoon.  And Leif seemed to think Audric had not a sneaky, subtle bone in his body?  Really?  Nevertheless, he hovered at Leif's shoulder, prepared to jump into the fray should Trevian decided to return the attack with one of his own.  The Treyburns, by and large, weren't a forgiving bunch.

Trevian was a trained soldier -- and, as a trained soldier, he was not overly pleased with how slow he was to react to the angered man's punch.  Though, he reflected, from where he sat on the ground, rubbing his jaw, for a nobleman, that was one hell of a punch.  Fire shone in his eyes at the mistreatment -- though the sight of Valentina quickly cooled the flames.  Still, his eyes watched Leif like a hawk as he slowly rose; if Leif chose to strike again, this time, Trev would be ready to retaliate.

(OOC: Stopped to wait for Valentina!)

Illi walked into the ball from the veranda (http://www.spiritsoftheearth.net/smf/index.php?topic=15622.0), full of excitement. It was finally time to dance! Maybe, she realized, she'd be able to get a dance in with Davishire. She didn't know why, but the idea of dancing with him (or, rather, him dancing) was an amusing one.

Except she entered just in time to see her brother being socked by some man she had seen before but didn't really know. It shocked and angered her so much that she didn't even see the man that she had originally been searching for. She only saw the jerk.

Given, Illi knew better than to think that Trevian wasn't at least somewhat at fault. First off, people tended to avoid drama at big events like this. Especially if that drama involved violence. Secondly, well, he was... him. He probably had a slip of a tongue.

But that didn't qualify someone punching him.

So Illi walked straight towards him, reaching him quicker than she thought possible. Just because she knew Trev could defend himself did not mean she wouldn't be there to protect him. He was her brother! Plus, it wasn't like she was going to hit the man back. Illi already told Dahlia that she'd try not to cause any more drama. But that didn't mean she couldn't stand by him to intimidate the puncher. After all, Illi was very frightening in her queen costume.

OOC: Just so it's clarified (lol though too late now, derp!) I'm really waiting on Valentina's response to Leif's reaction- but no worries about it now- Davshire's got this!
BUt future notice, no one leap at Leif yet please until Caerina responds! X3
<3<3<3<3
But omg, I do love these Treyburns!

-------------

Lord Davishire, still brewing over this ball, found his intended target the moment the ballroom turned towards the crazed Lord Arrant. Davishire, never a man to intervene, found his eyes going wider than the tower of Uthlyn was tall and swore beneath his breath when he realized just exactly where Jillian Treyburn was headed. And instincts kicked in. She was too close to the scene of the fight and he pushed his way quickly past the other guests without so much as a warning to Avery, or those his broad shoulders were sifting through. But his heart was pounding in his ears, and his brain was only set to one task-
Protect the poor woman from herself!

Taking her by the hand suddenly, Jillian would find herself suddenly pulled from the fight before it had a chance to escalate into anything further.
"Miss Jillian!" his voice boomed through a whispered hiss. "Confounded, woman, do not stand so close to a fight!" And as he held onto her, he didn't realize how over protect he suddenly seemed, or how disheveled his hair had become beneath his costume, partially spilling out amongst the wolf hair of his costume mask.

Luckily, he was a strong man, so Jillian would not be one to so easily escape! But he had to protect her after all! What was she trying to do!? Approaching Lord Arrant was inconceivably reckless!

And while one man was rescuing away with one lady Treyburn, Edward would not abandon his.
"Lady Treyburn!" he said, dropping to his knees beside Janette. "Are you alright?"

Jana entered the ballroom with the Raspberry Tart on her arm. After a quick glance around, it was clear something was wrong. Actually, it was clear something way wrong before they even entered the room, seeing as everything seemed to get hushed. And, as fates would have it, one of her many brothers seemed to be in midst of the troubles.

Turning towards Lady Davina, Jana said, "It seems our dance will have to wait. Those two men seem to be stealing all the attention." She paused. "But I suppose that is good. I wouldn't want all the gentleman here to come chasing after you." She winked before cleverly adding, "Alas, I do not know the names of anyone here. Would you be gracious enough to tell me what I need to know so that I will not embarrass myself while in your presence?"

While Jana was taking control of the situation on the other end of the ball, Illi was completely thrown off her track.

"Davishire?!" she whispered back, startled. He was... kind of close, she realized with a blush. And stronger than she had imagined. She tried to pull away, but her attempts completely failed. Out of all of her siblings, Illi was by far the weakest. "Let go! That's my brother! I have to help him! Or, well, support him!" Despite the strength in her words, her voice remained quite quiet. Spending lots of time in libraries allowed Illi to basically become the whispering queen.

A few seconds passed of Illi hopelessly trying to escape before she finally gave up and became still. "How could I abandon a sibling of mine?" she finally asked him, looking up at him with puppy eyes.

If someone told Valentina just a week or two ago that she would be dancing with a man she barely knew and causing a fight in the middle of the dancefloor, she would never believe it! Stirring the society was what she usually did, but being in the center of a scandal wasn't really how she planned her evening. And since she was already shaken by her earlier run in with Leif, and she was now actually ready to admit that she had way too much 'adventure' for one night.. Perhaps even for a month or so...

Valentina was aware of her husband's presence even before he had shouted the name of her dancing partner, and felt the itching to flee. Instead, she stayed and watched a pretty nasty hit in the face of her suitor. And now the feelings of betrayal and sadness from before were enhanced by the feeling of anger. What the hell was he thinking?

"How could you do that?!" she shouted, not really caring to hear the answer or  really worrying about what other people would think. She didn't care if every one of the guests watched the scene with tension and unhidden interest. Nothing better than a scandal to make the rich people amused. Let them watch, because she had a lot of other things to say...

"Who do you think you are? Barging in and punching people!" Valentina took a deep breath. Although Trevian looked better now, after he had a few seconds to recover, he still took the hit pretty bad, and Valentina could only imagine how bad it hurt. The silence in the room was now near absolute and she could almost hear her own heart banging in her chest furiously.

And at that moment in the silence, she was quite lost. She didn't know whether she should be angry or sad or should she run or stay. It was all mixed up in her head as she finally looked straight to Leif who looked as angry as she ever saw him. Well, it was good that they at least shared that one feeling, she thought to herself sarcastically.

The hate in Leif's eye was intense, and the nerve struck went down, nearly poisoning him to his heart. And he could have slugged the man again for the look in his eyes and had drawn his fist back, as if to punch him again, but instead, he turned to his wife suddenly and inspite of all the madness (or because of it) he grabbed her suddenly and smashed his lips unto hers.
Love. Hate. Passion and duty, it all swelled within his breast as he kissed her, holding onto his face and forcing all of his emotions into that first, sweet, intense and epic kiss.
And only after he had pulled away he told her right there before the entire palace with a trembling, raged voice, that remained just barely over a tepid whimper.
"Because I love you, Valentina. You are my wife."

It was so hard for her to understand what was happening in that chaos of emotions. But something broke inside of her when he kissed her, and although she was more confused than ever it was also the moment when she understood him and his emotions more clearly than before. To the people around them this was probably the new juicy gossip, but to her it was the moment that was bound to change her future.

He told her that he loved her, and yet how could she do the same with all of his secrets now hanging over them. Her feeling have been clear to her for some time now, but him returning those feeling was just wishful thinking... Up to this moment.

"Damn you, Leif." she said in a quiet voice that almost matched his, as few tears rolled down her face "Just spilling all these things at me tonight." Valentina brushed the tears from her eyes. It didn't really matter whether the tears were from the anger or of joy. She knew she loved him, but he had some explaining to do.
Title: Re: Waltz of the Sugar Plum Candies

Leif kept her face held within his hands, brushing her tears away with his thumb.
"Yes, damn me to hell," he said, green eyes wavering. And before she could chew him out, he smashed his lips unto hers again, this time only pausing to tell her. "I'm sorry," but once before continuing to kiss her lips again.

And if Lord Davishire was to say anything to Miss Jillian Treyburn, the words were lost on him as he found himself staring, quite awe-filled, at the sudden love confession from Lord Arrant to his wife. ANd had he known better, he might have tried to hide his blush as he watched the pair and loosened his wolfish grip upon Jillian's arm.

Valentina suddenly realized where they were and withdrew her lips from his, a slight blush on her cheeks.
"Everyone's watching." her voice a whisper, as she looked up to his eyes. She knew he was a private man, and kissing in the middle of a huge ballroom full of people he mostly disliked, was most surely not like him. To her, it didn't really matter where they were, but she was worried he would get to regret this tomorrow.

Well, at least Davishire was taken care of, Avery thought as he watched his surly companion swoop in and usher the girl away from the ensuing melee. But things only seemed to be heating up and a Scene was rapidly building. So, deciding Davishire could take care of himself for a bit, Avery decided instead to come to the aid of the unfortunate Lord Draven.

"Let's move her somewhere less chaotic, shall we?" he asked as he approached the 'dancing partners.' Boy, was she a giant, though! All the better Avery came to help; he doubted Edward would be able to move the girl on his own. "You take her shoulders, I'll very carefully take the other end," he offered, a tad nervously, and very cautiously looped his arms around Janette's knees, staying very mindful of her dress! and helped Edward remove the poor, drunk, passed out girl from the scene.

"What isn't the matter?" was Riley's surly response to his uncle's question. As the scene progressed, though, his confidence in adults to be have... well... adult, continued to flag. Then, to his horror, another stranger was attending to Janette. It was mortifying! That's what Trevian had been meant to be doing, instead of causing this huge scene just because he could never pass up a chance to flirt! It was all so frustrating!

Well, maybe it was up to him to be the responsible one after all. He heaved a huge, exaggerated, frustrated sigh and not a word to Oscar, Riley stomped off again. But he was far too ashamed to face Lord Edward now, so though he followed the odd trio of Edward, Avery, and the unconscious Janette out of the room (http://www.spiritsoftheearth.net/smf/index.php?topic=15589.20), he kept his distance lest Edward spot him!

In Oscar's opinion, it seemed that Trevian had lost this round. With a hefty blow such as that and the very public display of affection from his suitor and her husband, it was difficult to see how he could possibly bounce back from it. Honestly, what was the trouble with Treyburns and their dramas with married women? Whether they intended it or not, it all seemed to end in tears.

He was perfectly ready to agree with his young nephew, but clearly the boy didn't want to hear it. Still wrapped up in his own foul mood, Riley fled with little more than a few snappy words and before his uncle could call him back. At least he was heading away with other... well, he hesitated to say responsible adults, but they were adults at least. So long as he didn't throw liquor on Janette, it would hopefully be fine.

The only problem now was Trevian, standing smack in the centre of his own mess with a blossoming bruise to match Oscar's, dumbfounded and maybe a little defeated. He had yet to react properly, and it occurred to him that now was probably a good idea to save his brother from himself. He approached gingerly, one of the few people daring to move in the shellshocked ballroom, laying a hand on his brother's arm.

"Maybe you should step back, brother." He muttered, with a slightly embarrassed glance towards the embracing couple. His voice was pitched low, hoping for discretion, for some way to salvage this bloody situation. "You look like you need a drink - and maybe some ice for that jaw..."

Leif kissed her again, despite her words.
"I don't care," he breathed, holding onto her face as he pressed his forehead to hers. "I've been a fool," he whispered. "And I'm sorry I can't be a better man but my words are true, Valentina, by Angsar's will they are. I do love you. And I am sorry. For everything."

Trevian's expression shifted from amazement -- this was, after all, not how these things usually turned out -- to humor, as he clapped a hand on his brother's shoulder and laughed quietly.  "Well, I was going to suggest everyone kiss and make up, but it seems they beat me to it."

In spite of his immediate desire to return to blow, his blood had been cool enough in the first place to let matters lie: after all, there was little more terrifying to a lady of society than to have two gorillas fight over her.

And, anyway, this was her husband -- and Trevian was not one to fight -- physically or otherwise -- for the affections of a lady who clearly did not want to give them.

"Are you buying?" he inquired cheerfully of his brother.

Audric exhaled softly, relieved as the situation diffused itself and, suddenly, feel a bit awkward standing so close to the pair.  He wondered if he should remind them they were in the middle of a crowded room, but, as their affection seemed to be drawing more romantic sighs from some of the ladies and men alike, he thought it best to just leave them.  They'd remember they were in public eventually!

Oscar visibly relaxed, his relief palpable now that Trevian didn't seem to be reacting negatively. On the contrary, he actually found it rather funny, and Oscar couldn't help but chuckle along, even if his own laughter was a little weak. "Looks like it." He glanced again towards the couple, who didn't seem to be settling down any time soon. It was not, however, something he was all too worried about. Let them make their scene, someone would break them up eventually.

"It's a party, brother, since when have we had to buy?" He stepped away from the epicenter with a wave of his arm, indicating the small army of servants (who were still staring). "Just point out what you want and I'll fetch it for you." And some ice, he added to himself, waving over a maidservant to relay the message, probably a lot of ice.

He kept moving as far from notice as he could conceivably get, already starting with a stream of worried patter. "Honestly, Trevian, I don't know how our family survived this long." At his elbow, the maidservant reappeared almost out of thin air, bobbing a curtsy. "Oh wonderful, thank you. I mean-" He continued, handing over the ice with the air of a fussing mother hen. "-Chaos seems to follow us just about everywhere! I'd say it's ridiculous but... well. It's probably par for the course, actually. How's your face?"

"Are we at a party?  I must have been hit harder than I thought to be so disoriented..."  Trevian feigned cheerfully (and not at all convincingly) as he accepted the ice.  He pressed the pack against his jaw with a little bit of a shiver as the cool sensation passed sensation passed over his skin.

"Really, Oscar, you needn't hover.  Had the lady taken offense and slapped me, the damage would have been far worse."  That wasn't entirely true; Leif Arrant had one hell of a right hook.  "Nothing bruised but my ego."  Also not entirely true.

He gestured to the couple with his free hand.  "I'm happy for them, really.  It's a nice ending -- usually, they just drag their girlfriends or wives or what-have-you off the dance floor like a piece of property.  But beating the hell out of the other man, then sweeping the lady off her feet?"  Trevian grinned broadly.  "That's a great move."

After everything she had heard in the gardens perhaps it was silly, but Valentina trusted him. Although so many things in their marriage were fake and planned, and their whole relationship a lie for the society, she couldn't help but see hope that in the future that will change.

"I believe you." she finally said, and then remembering the words she forgot to say the last time she continued "I believe you, because I love you and I'll be here no matter what happens." her words were quiet and for him only. A gentle smile was now on her lips, while the tears still weren't dried from her face.

"Har har." Oscar deadpanned, giving his brother the closest he could get to a withering look. More like mildly wilting. The acceptance of the ice seemed to take a little of the tension out of him though, and he nodded absently, swiping a couple of glasses off a passing tray and giving one to Trevian. The other was half empty in one swallow. "Coming from the man who gets punched all the time. We'll have matching bruises tomorrow, just you wait and see."

And wouldn't explaining that to mother be fun? Grimacing at the mere thought of it, Oscar made to down the whole glass, then thought better of it. "That's true - at least it turned out for the best." He quirked a little smile, but there was a wistfulness behind it. "Sometimes I wish I had your confidence, Trev. It must be so much nicer, wandering through life without all that damned fretting."

Illi watched the scene unfold before her with star filled eyes. She didn't even notice Davishire's grip on her loosen. Instead she was mesmerized by the beautiful love between two people she didn't know.

The passion. The regret. The longing.

It was all so clear in how they held each other. It was so... touching.

It took all of Illi's will to hold back her tears. But she knew she couldn't cry again. Not with her promise to Dahlia and especially not with so many of her siblings in the same room. Then again, they would probably understand that she was crying because of how perfect the scene in front of her was. It was practically from a book—the greatest romance ever written.

She didn't know the story behind the lovers, but her head created one.

Looking up at Davishire again, Illi spoke in a gentle hush. "It's so romantic..." She smiled foolishly and looked back at the couple, wondering if she would ever get to learn their true story. Then she decided that she probably wouldn't, but she could write her own version of it. And it would be the best story she had ever written.

Once the whole situation finally caught up to Leif Arrant, he smiled as he held his wife.
"Let's find somewhere more private to talk.. (http://www.spiritsoftheearth.net/smf/index.php?topic=15686.msg159658#msg159658)" And holding onto the small of her back, he guided her away.

Davishire, who had been staring, bristled stiffly at Jillian's comment but only commented with an idled muttered, breathy, "Yes."
Though he saw her star struck look, that was only giving him far more reasons to feel uncomfortable beside her. And it was after Leif and Valentina were off the dance floor did the Grand Duke command the dancing to begin once again. And after a moment's hesitation, the dance floor came back to life with men and women spinning around, beautiful and lovely in their sparkling dress.

Davishire watched the dancing in silence. He was numbed to it- to the romance that had unfolded, and towards his budding feelings towards the woman beside him, and as he watched the dance continue, he realized he was missing up his chance.
Keeping his posture straight- shoulders back, chin up high, and eyelids slightly lowered; he clasped his hands behind his back as he cleared his throat.
"It seems the dancing has already begun." And the pair of them were nothing but wall flowers! So turning to her, he bowed his head towards her. "Would you do me the honor of sharing in this dance? Or shall I conduct my proper apology towards you, first?"

OOC: As a note- Leif and his wife are now gone from this scene- probably to a private thread that I'll link later XD *lazy*

"Today, you call it confidence.  Tomorrow you'll be back to calling it foolishness," Trevian answered with all of his aforementioned confidence.

He should probably continue his search for Janette, since his dance partner had been reclaimed by her husband...

He glanced around, but, upon seeing neither her nor his nephew, he decided to put it off -- for just a moment.  Grinning broadly, he asked, "So, how did it go with Lady Coleridge?  Any more screaming?"

She did have quite the reputation for shrieking -- and just about everyone for every reason imaginable.

Illi sighed dreamily as the couple disappeared. Perhaps the night wasn't so bad, after all. It seemed as if those two would have a story that would last a lifetime.

And the night got even better once the music started playing again. She wanted to dance! She watched the others twirl and spin around like little gusts of wind. Illi doubted the man beside her would be one for dancing, but it would be rude to just leave him. Plus, who would she dance with? But she wanted to dance. Her wish was clear in her face, as her eyes darted from couple to couple making magic with their steps.

So when Davishire asked her to dance, she didn't even bother to respond. Instead she giggled and pulled him into the dance floor. And then she started to dance, hardly giving him any time to catch his feet. Her feet, however, fluttered across the ground as if she were born dancing. One way or another, the heels she was wearing didn't disturb her flow.

Looking up at her companion with a wide smile on her face, Illi finally said, "Why would you apologize? It was me who insulted you and my siblings who leapt upon you as if they were the wolves. So, my lord, I do believe it is my place to give you an apology." And with that, Illi temporarily stopped moving just so that she could go onto her very tiptoes and place a gentle kiss on Davishire's cheek. Then, as if nothing had happened, she continued to dance!

"Whatever it is, I wish I'd had a little of it today." Even so, Oscar had to groan at his behaviour, going predictably pink at the off-colour joke just as he'd done every single time Trevian had tried to make one. Never, not since he knew what such things meant had he ever got away without at least a blush - and damn if Trevian didn't know it.

"Trev!" He spluttered, pressing his face into his hands for a few seconds. "It wasn't like that! W-we just escorted her to the maids and they gave me a chance to change, that was all. But the poor thing was just so embarrassed - Trev, I could have sworn she was crying at one point... But I don't really think they needed me barging in any more. The Duchess, she- she was very good about it all, tried to calm her down. We talked. Just a little." He looked very much like he wanted to hide in his hands again, "She said she'd heard 'rumours' about the family, like it was all amusing."

OOC: I almost forgot about Davina and Jana.
Almost.

------------

Lady Davina's eyed over her arm candy and gave her a bit of a pout.
"Dancing was sounding wonderful, but it seems fate can be cruel sometimes." Though the woman hardly had a chance to get a word in when the events continued to unfold right before her eyes.
"Interesting.. you know.. the man kissing that woman, who is also the man who just threw the punch? That's Leif Arrant. He's publically known as an ass, and was almost killed on his wedding day for it. Rumor has it he gets around at night, but what do I know?"
And when the music started up again, her eyes alit.
"Perhaps we'll get that dance after all, my angel." And she waited for him to escort her to the floor.

While someone else was being dragged onto it.
Davishire had no trouble keeping up, considering he had longer legs than Jillian, but he was still having trouble not stumbling over his own two feet as he was dragged off.
"Really, Miss Treyburn! You are showing quite the exuberance over a meager dance!"
Though the girl seemed to be in her own little world as they began their dancing, and for the first few minutes, poor Davishire was having a difficult time swallowing down his pride, and blush.
Though when he tried to drum up a conversation over an apology, Jillian had already begun hers, and before he knew it, she sealed a kiss to his cheek.
Dumb founded into silence, the man simmered for a moment while holding the woman a bit more tensely as they danced. This was NOT how this was supposed to go! Why was she apologizing!?

And while Lord Davishire was trying to think up just what to say, another frustrated individual entered the dancing hall - a woman dressed in all pink. It seemed Lady Valia Coldridge did have some energy left within her. She was still slightly drunk, but less mopey, but still grumpy as she looked out into the ballroom with an indignant sniff. She might as well at least save face by sticking the ball out for the rest of the hours. But even still, she was simmering beneath the surface, and hadn't quite healed over from her fiasco from earlier. Though as her eyes idly scanned the crowd, she spotted the lion from earlier and turned away from him the moment her eyes met to his and she stuck her nose up in the air with a sniff. At least she was on the other side of the dance floor or she'd storm away from him ungratefully.

Trevian grinned devilishly as he sipped from his glass.  "You're the one jumping to conclusions about what I must have meant, Oscar, and that's hardly my fault."

The smile faded, then, when Oscar described the tears.  He loved women -- each and every one -- and he hated to hear of them being upset enough to warrant tears.  Oh, certainly, sometimes they burst into tears without any reason whatsoever, but, in this case, tears were certainly understandable.

"Amusing?  Our family?  What rumors has she been hearing, I wonder?"  Because, typically, rumors involving the Treyburns were neither amusing, nor appropriate for the Grand Duchess's ear.  But, then, perhaps she was just being polite...

"Well, Oscar, you've secured an introduction, in the very least, and that's better than the rest of us have done.  Mother will dote on you tomorrow, I'm sure."  He flashed his younger brother another grin as a figure in pink caught his eye -- a very angry lady, unless he missed his guess.  "Although it seems you may have made an enemy of Lady Coleridge -- not difficult to do, I assure you.  She quite frequently and loudly takes offense.  She'll be glaring at you all night unless something is done."  He set his emptied glass down on a passing tray with a soft clink.  "I'll see if I can't convince her to forgive you.  And, besides, I'd like to get in at least one dance before my face is too puffy and horrendous."

So saying, Trevian moved off into the crowd to speak to the lady in question, stopping before her with a bow as the second song of the evening began.  "Would you care to dance, my Lady?"

Meanwhile, Oscar had scarcely been left alone for a moment before he was approached, rather boldly, by the Grand Duchess herself.  "You look to be recovered," she observed with a charming, sophisticated smile.  "And I see you've even managed to convince Lady Coleridge to return to the party.  Well done."

"Yes, yes, you and your damned innocent face." Oscar snorted from behind his own glass. "We both know you could a statue blush, if you set your mind to it."

There was uncomfortable silence for a moment, and Oscar let go a very put-upon sigh, shrugging helplessly. "God knows. She did mention how 'interesting' it would be to have us at court, but I'm not sure if she meant as guests or the resident fools."

That said, Trevian had the right of it to some extend, even if he didn't relish the thought of their doting mother. "I suppose so, though it would have surely gone more smoothly with Braxton. I swear, I was practically shaking." And speaking of which: both their heads turned as a great swathe of pink cut its way through the crowd, topped by a very angry and unfortunately familiar face. The withering glare she sent his way was a rather unpleasant surprise - although with her reputation, what else did he expect? Still, he felt he had the right to be mildly affronted by it. "Charming." He muttered under his breath. "Well, I wish you luck with that, brother. If my best efforts gained that result, I'll need all the help I can get."

He waved Trevian away with a smile, left to nurse his drink and watch his approach from the corner of the room. He was just sending up a silent prayer that he wouldn't gain a matching bruise on his other side, when he found himself ambushed by the other subject to their conversation. Suffice to say, he almost jumped out of his skin.

"Your Grace!" He dropped into an awkward half-bow, resurfacing with a slightly pink face. "I, ah... Yes, quite recovered, though I daresay the bruise will take some explaining. I, ah, I must thank you again for your help. It was... very welcome." While she was charming, he was awkwardly polite, his sweet smile fluttering uncertainly across his face. He glanced briefly over his shoulder to where Trevian was attempting to woo his potential new enemy, and he let out a wry little chuckle. "Thank you, but I can't really take the credit - her Ladyship seemed determined to fix matters on her own. Besides which, she doesn't exactly seem keen on extending the hand of friendship after what happened."

Jana led the woman towards the gathering and did a quick bow. "Milady," she said sweetly before starting a dance with her. She could dance well enough and perform some nice, gentle lifts due to the muscle she had developed. The dress, however, seemed to constantly be in the way. Jana was once again thankful that she had avoided such an annoyance.

"Leif, is it?" Jana repeated. "What a strange name. Sir Arrant... is there a reason that name rings a bell in my ears? Or is it just your melodious voice that makes everything sound as if it were meant to be?" She couldn't help but wonder if Davina really did know about Leif's ability to 'get around at night'. After all, the lady had a similar reputation.

Jana lifted her up for a quick spin before setting her feet gently upon the floor. And she couldn't help but remember when Rose used to do that to her. But that lady was all fake, doing whatever she could to get influence. Even if it meant warming up to her children in case they ever got favor from someone important in the future. Jana realized a scowl had snuck onto her face and she quickly replaced it with a warm smile.

Illi, on the other hand, had no reason to hide her emotions. Instead, she let her happiness flow out of her face like the morning sun on a cloudless day. She didn't notice the tenseness in her companion's body, for she was too busy focusing on her own moves. She kept dancing and spinning and smiling as the blood rushed warmly through her body. If everyday was like this, she wouldn't even need to read!

But she still would. She would read every morning and dance every night. It would be wonderful! Smiling up at her partner, Illi wondered what he normally did. Did he read? She assumed so, based on his careful treatment of the books. Or maybe he just admired them, too afraid to touch them. Illi giggled at her own thoughts before another, slightly more surprising, thought made its way into her head and quieted her little laughs.

What if they could read together? She had always wanted to read with someone else—someone other than her siblings, that is. Then they could discuss books and decipher meanings and figure out all the mysteries of the novels together. And they could drink hot chocolate in a small, cozy room on a cute little couch while snuggling together...

And her face became bright red.

What was she thinking?! Illi hadn't really been interested in this lord. She had simply found him different! He knew who here costume was, after all. And he loved books. Like her. But her thoughts were wondering... well, they did that quite often. It was probably nothing.

Illi pushed her strange thoughts aside, making them leave as quickly as they had come. Her blush, however, did not do the same. She managed to put on a weak smile as she continued to look up at her dancing partner, hoping that it would hide the rosiness of her cheeks.

"Miss Treyburn," Davishire said, finally breaking the silence as he noted her quietness long after his own. "Please allow me to at least take this moment to explain myself. My actions were gravely offensive, and had I the patience of a normal man, perhaps you would not have been on the receiving end of my gruff tongue. But being as things fell as they were, I hope you can at least accept my apology as sincere. I am not familiar with the delicacies of a woman, the only one I am bound to is my sister." And she of all the women was a terrible example.

And the grin on Davina's face could attest to that.
"Well, as I stated previously, he's famous for being an ass. Maybe you've hated him in your previous life?"

And while Davina was gossiping with her dance partner, Valia appeared to be acquiring one herself. Glancing over at Trevian skeptically, she wrinkled her nose but accepted.
"I suppose," she said with a sniff and stepped in closer to him, waiting for him to guide her out onto the dance floor. Might as well. Dancing was sort of why she returned to the floor, after all. Despite making a fool of herself, Valia loved the attention and thrill of dancing- and also just flirting with the boys.

Kathryn laughed softly at Oscar's description.  "Yes, that certainly describes my sister.  I'm sorry for that.  I suppose we all spoiled her a little too much."  Or a lot too much.  "That would be one of your brothers, then, leading her out onto the floor?  He's a brave man to face her wrath voluntarily."  She shot Oscar a wry grin.  She loved her sister dearly, but the rumors were certainly not unfounded.  For a moment, she remained silent, watching the pair enter the dance gracefully.  The Grand Duchess turned to her companion with a smile.  "Do you dance, my lord?"

Out on the floor, Trevian escorted Valia neatly away from the crowd.  As he began to guide her into the first steps of the dance, he murmured, "I must confess, Lady Coleridge, I am normally not so shy, but I find myself at a loss for words in your company.  I've admired you from afar for some time, and I haven't quite worked out the right thing to say to you yet...  Save that this is a great honor."

"We can't be at fault for what other people do, Your Grace." Oscar smiled magnanimously, giving a little shrug. "Besides, the way things went earlier, I can't blame her for being upset." He turned to follow her gaze, biting his lip to keep from grinning at the sight of Trevian and Valia out on the dance floor. "Yes, that would be my favourite big brother: lots of bravery, lots of heart, not a lot of sense. She may well have met her match." Her wry grin was returned, finally starting to loosen up a little in the presence of someone so important. Her offer, true to form, had him faltering all over again.

"I- Uh..." He gathered his wits quickly, nodding as gracefully as he could manage. "Sometimes, Your Grace. I at least haven't stepped on any toes in my time."

"Well, don't worry," Kathryn answered warmly as she extended an expectant hand out to Oscar.  "I'm an excellent dancer.  I'll make sure you look good out there."

She held her ground patiently until he began to lead her out onto the floor to join the other dancers.  As they fell into line with the rest of the floor, she picked up their conversation effortlessly.

"I must admit, I had to spend a moment educating myself on your family before I approached.  All of you have quite the reputation."  To say the least...  "You're the scholar.  I've been told you study the stars and mathematics."

He took her hand as expected, his smile more hesitant, but no less warm for it. "Hopefully I can hold my own, but I'm sure you'll outshine me either way, Your Grace."

They stepped out onto the floor with the poise his governesses and mother had repeatedly hammered into him through childhood - though his overactive imagination kept focusing on whether or not he would trip. He didn't, thank Angsar, and they joined the dance and their previous conversation without incident.

"My siblings love their dreams and their adventures - and sometimes a little chaos, I have to admit. I'm sure I came across as the boring one. " He resisted the urge to wince at another mention of their reputation - with the way his siblings racketed about, it can't have been all good. Or even partially good. "But it's true. My father wasn't pleased - Angsar rest his soul - but there's just something so fascinating about it all." His eyes lit up behind his mask, becoming immediately more animated as they turned to his favourite subject. "It's such a complicated order of things... like pulling back the curtain to see how the world works!"

If Davishire had noticed her strange thoughts, he showed no signs of it. She laughed quietly and to herself when he yet again called her "Miss Treyburn". First off, as she had proven that night, she wasn't exactly the lady type. Miss just didn't seem to fit very well. Also, there were so many "Miss Treyburns" in her family. For all she knew, he could've been talking to Janette!

But as he continued to speak, she once again returned to silence. Why was he apologizing? It was sweet, sure, but she wasn't at all prepared for it. Especially because she didn't quite see him as the type to apologize easily. And he wasn't even in the wrong! Well, maybe a little. But not enough that she expected him to apologize! After all, he just wanted to protect the books—and that's the exact same thing she liked to do.

His apology made her disappearing blush return as she frantically managed to say, "Oh no! You did nothing wrong. Well, not really. It's just that... you see... well... Yeah. Your temper was completely understandable. Not needed—ah, I mean, I know how to treat books seeing as I spend most of my time with them instead of with others—but understandable. You see, I like to imagine everything will always turn out perfect, and because of that I, um, don't react well to certain situations." Like people yelling at her or her harming their feelings. "And like I said earlier, it was my fault." By now her face was bright red, caused by her embarrassment on not knowing how to strew together words.

If only she could write them out... then it would all turn out perfect.

But then nobody could see it.

Unlike Illi and her frantic self, Jana knew exactly what to say. "If my previous life affects this one, that would explain why I was drawn to you immediately. No matter what I was like, it would be impossible for me not to love such a sweetness as yours."

She stopped talking for a second and pulled Davina close for the next spin. After releasing her, she continued, "However, it seems like some of these pairings at this ball look a bit... strange. While my adoration of you makes perfect sense, I do not see how many of these other pairings fit. That Love Goddess over there must have made some mistakes. In fact, what was she thinking, coming as a goddess? And who is that boy spending time with her rebellious self?"

"Hardly," Kathryn answered with a good-natured laugh.  "Just because you prefer scholarly pursuits certainly should not stop you from having adventures."  Her eyes shone, as much in reaction to his excitement as thoughts of her own past -- things she hadn't considered in some time -- suddenly came to the surface.

"I used to have quite the adventurous spirit myself.  If my parents knew half of the trouble I got into, I think I would have been locked away rather than put on parade for society."  It was obviously a topic that he was quite enthusiastic about, and she hoped not to dissuade him from sharing more.  Her adventures had certainly come to an end, but she still loved hearing about others...

Lord Davishire took in what she said with some careful thought , though her ideals were, how you'd say... unrealistic as he gave a scoff.
"I hate to be the one to tell you this, Miss Treyburn, but life is hardly perfect. If it were, we wouldn't have wars or balls to deal with. Though I'm surprised even you would think books are perfect. I've read plenty of harrowing tails that remind me of how dark the common man can be." And at her constant reminder it was not his fault, he scowled again and tightened his grip upon her.
"A man's duty is to apologize when he was in the wrong, my lady. And my apology has already been given and can not be taken back." Why was she being so stubborn? It made him so angry!

Though someone else was becoming less angry while Davishire was stewing inside- for Lady Valia was shameless for enjoying a good flirt- and Trevian Treyburn was famous for giving it.
"I have heard of your reputation enough, suffice to say, your words do not surprise me. But I won't stop you from continuing. This night has been harrowing, and I won't lie in saying I do appreciate a compliment or two." But even at that,s he gave a bit of a haughty sniff to the air, hoping the man had a bit more to his tongue than that as the pair continued to dance.

And while Valia was looking for amusement, Lady Davina was thoroughly amused. She caught Lady Valia and Trevian Treyburn dancing about and smirked.
"Oh, but don't you see, my angel? They are both a pair of hearts..." And here, her eyes shined, but she pressed into her gossip by saying in a lowered voice.
"Word has it Lady Valia is quite the handful- and Trevian Treyburn has just the right tongue- I do not foresee a terrible match there, but rather, I'd be disappointed to hear if Lord Treyburn did not take advantage. After all, it's common knowledge that girl's marriage is on the outs. Despite giving Lord Coleridge an heir, there is talk about her infidelity- though as far as I know, it hasn't quite yet been proven. It's why the Goddess's husband is not here this evening and she had come alone."

Trevian's answering grin was immediate but no less charming for its roguish qualities.  Oh, so  she had heard of him...

"I'm flattered the exploits of a mere soldier have reached such lovely ears," he answered.  His hand lifted to brush her hair back, fingertips tracing the shape of her ear lightly.  "Although I'm not sure if mere words could ever describe your perfection, if I can bask in your smile for but a moment..."  His finger followed the curve of her ear to her jaw and followed its shape to her chin.  "...I think not even the sunrise on a dewy morning could hold any beauty for me any longer."

"I suppose not." Oscar mused, turning them both with the flow of the dance. "I don't measure up to some of the others, I'm sure, but the Dean would probably disagree. He's chased me off the solarium roof more times than I can count. I keep telling him if he'd just update the observatory, I would have to..." He paused. "Although thinking about it, chances are I still would."

"I suppose that's part of the fun of growing up in high society. Normal childhood mischief becomes that much more clandestine when you're supposed to be all proper." He had absolutely no idea why the Duchess showed such an interest in his and his sibling's childish antics (both as children and adults, sadly), but her open smile seemed to pull the words from him, even as he tried his best not to drag his siblings names into the mud. "But I don't know a noble who hasn't rebelled at some point in their lives. Running wild as children, falling in love with the wrong person... Even my studies count."

"Oh?" Kathryn prompted curiously.  "And what's so rebellious about your studies?"  One would think, she added silently, that most parents would be delighted to have such a student in the family!  "I can't for the life of me imagine!"

Of course, mathematics had been terribly dull -- as had most of her formal schooling...

Valia and Trevian Treyburn whirled by, and she had to catch herself before she shot them a frown.  She wasn't sure if she ought to disapprove or just be relieved Valia wasn't throwing another massive tantrum...

Oscar was silent for a moment, unsure whether or not the Duchess was being sarcastic. If it's true, then I'm glad for any children you have. He thought grimly, unable to hold back a snort.

"It's rebellious when a life of politics or the military is the ideal goal." He told her, managing only through a lot of effort to keep the bitterness out of his voice. "Improve your family image, marry well - I'm sure Your Grace knows how those rules go - but to actually choose the University over all that? Well, I'm sure you can imagine the reaction to that. What use is a Professor at court?"

He pressed his lips together, eyes flickering a little guiltily over to Trevian, who at least seemed to be having fun, and hadn't heard his little outburst. "I apologise, Your Grace. I've spoken out of turn."

"Not at all," Kathryn answered with a light blush that, in spite of her mask, was all-too apparent.  "It is my fault entirely.  I often forget how eccentric my father seems to the rest of Connlaoth."  In her opinion, it was a shame...

"If I may be so impertinent to say so, Lord Treyburn, I'm very glad you chose to follow your heart.  There are enough soldiers and sycophants here at Court.  It's refreshing to meet someone who views the world differently."  She gave him a warm, confident smile, then stepped back to twirl in time to the song.

Rejoining him a moment later, she asked him curiously, "What is it you teach at the University?"  She had been told, of course, but it would be more telling to hear it from his own lips...

None of the information provided by Davina was new to Jana's ears, though it was always good to see who thought what of people. And to see if rumors have changed. Plus, hearing about her brother having "just the right tongue" was very amusing. But, she had to admit, if that was to be said about anyone, it would most definitely be Trev.

"I suppose two hearts to belong together... alas, why hadn't I matched my costume up with yours? Two raspberries, one heart. It would have been perfect." Not really. But she could pretend. Jana was getting bored with Davina, but it would be rude to just leave. Plus, it was interesting to hear what people thought of her siblings.

"So what about that couple over there? The one with the short girl and towering boy. Are you to say that contrast is good? Or is there some sort of connection between a wolf and a queen that I happen to be unaware of?" she questioned, wondering how the two ended up together.

Lord Davishire Callister had quite the nasty image painted by society. He wasn't bad looking but was still unmarried at twenty-nine, which was always a bad sign. And he was known to have a temper—when one even managed to get him to talk. So how had kind Illi ended up with him? Everyone knew that Illi was a bubbly girl if you managed to find her away from a book. The only thing she had ever heard about Illi from others is that "it is a miracle some boy hasn't married her already" or that she was "the sweetest little darling" or occasionally, though not as often, that she "is so perfectly innocent, but still needs a dose of reality". It seemed to her that Davishire and Illi were practically opposites!

The couple in question were having a conversation of their own, however. And when Davishire brought up how life wasn't perfect yet again Illi looked up at Davishire with a gleam in her eye. She wasn't backing away from this challenge. "First off, Lord Callister, I know life isn't perfect. I said that already—were you not listening? But that doesn't mean I can't dream."

She glanced over at her wrist was starting to hurt from his grip. Then she turned her gaze back to him and continued on, "Secondly, I have read those same tales... and probably more. But don't think you know me. Just because I'm naive and innocent and see life through rose colored glasses does not mean that I haven't experienced pain. I read to escape it.

"Yes, I know I'm being overdramatic. Blame it on the author inside of me. So many other people have been much worse pain than me. But being raised by two unloving parents was not a fun experience. And do you know how many siblings I have? Nine. Nine siblings. But you know what, you probably did know that. Everyone seems to. After all, I have a sister who was exiled and a loving brother who was disowned. The head of the family is still hated by many, being the irresponsible man he is. He has changed, yes, but people's views haven't. My second oldest sister lost her husband to war and is raising kids on her own. Then I have the brother that you just saw punched, as well as another one who is hated for my parents since he decided to become a scholar instead of a soldier. My youngest brother is part cat or fox or something, and constantly gets odd looks for it. One of my younger sisters is probably off somewhere, drunk and making a fool of herself. I only have one siblings left—and even she manages to weasel herself into trouble from time to time.

She took a deep breath. She hadn't meant to rant. But now that she started, she might as well finish. "So yes, my life isn't horrible. But it is no where near perfect. However, I don't go around telling others that life is dark and depressing. Because you know what? It's not. I love every single one of my siblings, even if no one else does. Yes, wars are bad. And this ball is turning out hundreds of times worse than I was hoping. But if I didn't have any hopes or dreams to start with, life would be pointless. Nothing is fun unless you make it fun."

Despite the seriousness of everything she had just said, Illi couldn't help but smile at this point. "And I still plan on having a fun time with you. Hopefully my long speech didn't just ruin that possibility and if it did—or even if it didn't—I apologize. But I can't stand seeing you as hopeless as you seem to be. Smile, laugh, have fun... it's a ball, for goodness sake!"

Catching sight of her blush, Oscar looked away in an attempt to let her save face. "I couldn't say if I agree - I'm afraid I don't know as much about the court as I should." It was good to hear her speak so well of her family though, and for a second he felt a small pang of jealousy. Her slightly personal observation however, brought him back to earth. This time, it was his turn to go pink.

"I... Th-thank you, Your Grace." He caught her as she moved in from her twirl, turning them both a half-step to fall back in line with the others. "Although I'm not truly a professor yet. I'd like to be - very much so - but first I must learn it all. I assist in teaching the newer students their stars and planets, but mathematics is for the old masters." He turned them again, his voice filled with a rare determination. "I will be a professor though. One day, I'll wear the robes and see the students right, mark my words."

Entrance from 'A Slice of Lemon Cake' (http://www.spiritsoftheearth.net/smf/index.php?topic=15589.new#new)

Avery re-entered the ballroom a bit cautiously now that he didn't have the glowering Davishire conveniently at his side scaring off the gossips and gawkers. Sticking to the sides of room, he deftly took a glass of champagne from a passing server. Best be fortified, just in case!

And just as he feared, it didn't take long before a single gentleman with no partner was spotted by Narwhal and Elongated Cat. Avery looked around for anyone nearby who he might leap into a conversation with before the women could close in on him, but he was out of luck.

"Oh, Lord Carwick! How good to see you! It's so nice to have all our handsome soldiers in from the front," mewed Narwhal.

"I couldn't agree more!" said Elongated Cat. "But all alone! Where is your cousin, the Duke, and the dear Duchess? Surely they're not still worked up about... oh, you know."

"Yes. What a pity! Their only daughter! I have to say, I don't blame them at all. I would be much to ashamed to show my face were it my daughter. Of course, my daughters are all blissfully married and perfectly normal and having beautiful babies!"

They chattered on, without even seeming to notice that Avery didn't make more than the most obligatory responses to him. They didn't seem to need much of his input to go happily about their cruel conversation. Avery let his eyes wander, desperately, around for an unescorted lady. If there was any way to escape these women's clutches, he was sure, it was to excuse himself to dance!

(OOC: After looking at my plot for Cherie, I'm going to have her sit out from the dancing, because I have no idea what kind of timeframe the plot is running on!  Sorry, Kleine!)

The Grand Duchess, meanwhile, nodded encouragingly.  "And I'm sure you'll be a wonderful professor.  Teaching others is a rare gift, Lord Treyburn."  She smiled warmly at him.  "I think your students will remember your lessons fondly.  And if I am ever blessed with a child with a head for mathematics, I shall certainly send him, or her, to you."  The song ended, then, and Kathryn lifted her hands to clap.  The musicians truly were wonderful tonight.  "And I believe that is the end of our song..."  She looked a trifle disappointed; it had been some time since she had been allowed to chat so informally.

He ducked his head, trying not to look too pleased with the compliment. "Your Grace is too kind - I would be proud to teach any child of yours, no matter their aptitude." If they were anything as accommodating as their mother, at any rate. He'd brave even a dimwit child so long as they showed enthusiasm, but it would certainly not be appropriate to say so.

Besides which, it seemed their song had come to an end: the final strains of music were lost to polite applause. He let his partner go to join in, adjusting his mask with a warm smile of his own. "It would seem so." He nodded, though he tried not to let his disappointment show. He rather thought she looked the same, but that was probably wishful thinking towards a friendly soul. "But I must thank you for it - and for letting me chatter like an idiot. I think I needed the change of pace after the rest of the evening."

The woman was positively over whelming as she went into a.far.too indepth rant about her family, but  even as Davishire felt his temper rise, it was not.for the reasons most would assume.
"I know far too well the quirks of family, Miss Treyburn." He said coolly though he did not elaborate. Unlike she, he was not prepared to inform someone about how dispicable his sister was, and how his younger brother was following in her foot steps. Not to mention he had already lost a brother to.the war. And he did not even want to begin to think about his parents.
"And as much as you would not believe it, I'm enjoying myself now as.much as I can," he replied though it was hard to tell by his expression if he meant it, but as they danced, his brown eyes never left hers.

And despite another seeming to be.engaged with a charming Treyburn, Lady Valia hardly seemed amused.
"A lot of men think I'm pretty, Lord Treyburn, I see no reason to swoon over your words. And this night has been most.trying. Is that all you've to say?"

"Davishire—don't you see? That's exactly what I'm talking about. Everyone knows of them... and, I must admit, I find myself happy more often than not that I am the forgotten one in the stories of us," Illi explained while smiling. "But I honestly am glad that you are enjoying yourself..." Though it certainly didn't seem like he was! "You know, I would rather have you call me Illi. Miss Treyburn just seems too formal and out of place and honestly doesn't fit any of my siblings. Except maybe Cherie... she could be a Miss Treyburn." Illi paused as she thought about it. And the more she thought about it, the less it seemed to fit even sweet little Cherie. After all, the girl had just punched the man in front of her! Illi blushed, remembering that event, and suddenly felt the need to continue talking so she could hide her thoughts.

So she carelessly carried on. "Enough about family, though. And the rumors that surround them. Our society is too screwed up here in Connloath." As soon as the words passed through her mouth, Illi gasped and her eyes went wide. She would've pulled her hands in to cover her mouth if it wasn't for the fact that she was still dancing (though much more stiffly now). "Oh goodness, I shouldn't have said that. Especially not here..." She glanced around, hoping that no one heard her. Talk like that could get her into trouble. At least she didn't expose her view on magic. She looked back at Davishire with her big, worried, gold tinted eyes and pleaded, "Please don't tell anyone I said that?"

"I know the feeling," the blonde agreed with a kind smile and a sparkle of mischief in her eye.  "I would welcome you at Court any time.  Perhaps you can even teach me a bit about the stars.  I'm afraid it was a subject my own tutor neglected while I was younger."

Stars were not high on her parents' priority list, after all...

"Thank you for the dance and conversation, Lord Treyburn.  I do hope you'll join us later in the evening for a drink."

Oscar swallowed, trying not to look too surprised - or too pleased - by the invitation. "I-- would be honoured, Your Grace. To both suggestions - although I hope I could at least make it interesting!"

Boring a Duchess to death probably wasn't a punishable offence - or a possible one - but why take that chance?

"O-of course, and thank you too, Your Grace. I'll be sure to join you, absolutely."

Welcome at Court. Gods be good, Mother would throw a fit.

"Please, Miss Treyburn, we have only but met. It wouldn't be prudent to call on you by your first name considering we are but acquaintances." Though he hardly seemed angered by it, he did appear a bit surprised she'd suggest addressing her by her first name and by the time the conversation turned into Illi spewing out her hatred of politics, Davishire could not help.himself but laugh, and laugh loudly. Many nearby dancers turned their heads to take in the rare site of not only Lord Callister DANCING, but laughing as well.

It was Davishire's turn to shake his head.
"Do notworry yourself over such a trivial manner. Half the.lords and ladies on the dance floor only begrudgingly support the Grand Duke and his new rein of terror and the other half came in hopes to really believe life will absolve back to normal." He scowled at.the thought. "But don't worry yourself over me, miss Treyburn, I am not a man who condones the vulgar tactics of.playing war amongst my peers using vulgar means to make myself
appear any better than I am.surely not. So do not think you in any danger," and the last part was said in a scoff, and if she might catch it quick enough, a smile.

As Davishire and Illi danced and conversed, Davina.turned their way with a coy.smile at Jana's comment.
"Ah, I see.you've spotted my.brother, Lord Davishire. He's the tall, irritable wolf and dancing with him I do believe is oneof.the Treyburns. Pity his first dance in ages is with that plain looking girl. Though as his sister, I suppose I should only have to worry were anything there so.serious. After all, we have to keep our breeding well, do.we not? And as far as I'm concerned, she's too beneath him anyway, what with my.brother being the heir of the duchy of Hellvion and all. Though perhaps it.is good he is practicing his charms on lesser nobles. After all, charming my brother surely is not. But dare I ask why you're curious of.my brother? He is, after all, a simple, refined wolf in pretty clothing."

And Avery wouldn't have to suffer long before a lone woman came rushing his way, seeming to be nothing more than a blur of white and red and feathers. Though it seemed the young lady was to simply dash right past the group, the large Narwhal turned and stepped ontop of the running woman's train of her dress;an action of such that halted the young woman clean in her tracks. She gave a gasp and whirled around to spot Mrs.Ophen.'s heel pinning down the flowing and far too long of a train, and the red head was quick to anger as she gave a few hefty tugs to the lace.

"Mrs.Ophen!!" The red head huffed, while still tugging on her dress. "If you'd be kind enough to move your heel..."
But no matter how many times the red head tried.to get the narwahl's attention, it was to no avail. Some how the large woman didn't hear her pleas (though to be fair, she was not in the woman's field of vision) and kept on about the poor atrocity that was Avery's cousin.

Winifred, who was the reluctantly captured red head, continued her.attempts to gain Mrs. Ophen's attention as she.grew angrier and more infuriated the longer it took her attempts to gain Mrs. Ophen's attention, to fail. It wasn't until Winifred was practically screeching the woman's name did the narwahl turn to catch the young lady out.of the corner of.her eye, which was at the same moment the train of her dress up and ripped free and the girl went tumbling right into.Avery's arms! And it seemed all that could be seen of her were the soft angel.wings on her back and her cascading, vibrant.red hair as she clung onto Avery.while the other two women, for once in their lives were speechless.

It took Winifred but a moment to sober in the moment as she slowly peered up at the man she had been awkwardly flung at while her entire face was flushed and her pretty hair, in disarray.  And for that moment, she too, knew not what to say as her chest rose and fell as she attempted to catch her breath, looking as agitated as ever and appearing anything but the.sweet.angel her.costume dictated her to be.

"Oh, Miss Rosalina!" Narwhal gasped as the young woman ripped her dress on her heel and went tumbling into Avery's arms. "Miss Rosalina, you must learn to be more careful!" Narwhal chided, her voise raspy with surprise and indignation. "I know a ball is exciting, but really!" The Rosalinas were on the outs, and everyone knew it! No reason to be overly nice to the girl.

Avery, for his part, gave a soft, good-natured laugh in attempt to dispel some of the awkwardness of the situation. "Steady there," he said, helping Winifred steady herself and get back up onto her feet, holding her arms just below the shoulders. Hadn't he been wishing for a dance partner? Clearly Angsar was listening to his prayers! But he supposed he couldn't sweep away a woman who'd just stumbled and tore her dress just to get away from these old gossips! "Alright there, soldier?" he asked with a friendly grin.

Weasel-cat, despite Narwhal's derisive comments, leaned forward to the girl and said. "Don't worry, Miss Rosalina. We all take a stumble on the dance floor once or twice!"

Narwhal huffed, unhappy that no one was sharing her distaste for the girl. "Is your fiance here, Miss Rosalina? What is he, again... a trader?"

Winifred cringed at the woman's statement, bringing up.her fiance was like throwing salt on a wound. Though her.fiance was clever and maintained his facade to the public well.that no one might believe the poor girl was a prisoner to her own destiny. And to the narwahl she now glared and huffed out a response. "Yes, a tradesman." And at the weasel's remark on dancing she grew flush with anger so by the time Avery's words were to reach her, the red head was on fire.
"Yes, I should be quite alright if you were to unhand me!" Though a petty remark, Winifred cared not in that miserable moment and wanted nothing more than to break free of this god awful.social entrapment! And seeing how the situation was already so terrible she saw no reason to sweeten her already quite obvious soured disposition, not even for the poor man who seemed to suddenly be.the target of her sharp tongue!

Her fear vanished and was replaced by warmth when Davishire laughed. Then he smiled and a blush played on her cheeks. It turned out that he was kind of attractive. A smile spread across her own face before she knew it, and she teasingly said, "Ah, I wasn't aware that you could smile. I was starting to worry that some sort of evil had cursed those lips of yours."

Her body loosened back up and she returned to the rhythm of the dance. "But I must say, it's hardly fair that you refuse to call me Miss Treyburn. That would mean that I would have to call you Lord Callister. And that just sounds so icky on my tongue." She scrunched up her face to show the 'disgust'. "Plus, haven't we passed the formalities? I think that ended the second I screamed in the music room."

While Illi might not have cared about the harsh words Lady Davina was saying even if she had heard her, Jana wouldn't let such a thing go unnoticed. With a small shake of her head, Jana scoffed, "I was not aware that was your brother." Which was actually true—that fact had entirely slipped her mind. "However, I still cannot tolerate insults to Lady Illi. You see, I am currently staying with the Treyburns. And I have to say that Lady Illi is one of the sweetest of the lot. If we are talking about charm, I'm afraid Lady Illi has much more of it than Lord Davishire. Chances are, she was the one who charmed him, not the other way around." Jana was tempted to continue on, but she knew pushing things too far might raise suspicions. Even if she had a good cover story. She nodded her head slightly and slowly added in, "I apologize for my bluntness, Milady. But there are insults that I cannot let slip through, and that was one of them."

(OOC: Sorry, Spice.  For some reason, I didn't see this post when you first made it!  Also, next week sometime, I need to catch you on Messenger to tell you things so Kathryn can drag Oscar over to meet Calent!  *snerk*)

For a mere moment, Trevian was almost taken aback by the girl's apparent boredom with one of his favorite lines.  His expression of surprise didn't last long, however; a grin emerged, and a crafty sparkle appeared in his eye.

Well, he usually wasn't so forward, but he would hate to disappoint a lady with her connections!

"My apologies, Lady Valia.  I had not realized you were a lady of such aplomb."

The dance seemed favorable to his plan.  Following the steps of the dance, he spun the blonde gently.  Like the rest of the couples on the floor, the lady's back was now towards his front; unlike the rest of the couples, however, the hand that should have remained chastely at her chip was pressed against her stomach, and he used this, and the leverage from the spin, to press her body against his.  To the rest of the room, it was a subtle enough gesture that, unless one was looking for it, it might be missed.  With the barrier of propriety of a few inches removed between them, he murmured something -- no doubt scandalous -- directly into the ear he had revealed just a moment ago.

(OOC Note: Spice, check your PMs!  I dare not post this in an open thread!)

It was Davishire's turn to blush when the lady came back with such comments, and drawing purposely attention to his disposition made the man suddenly flounder with his tongue, though this was primarily due to the fact he was in peculiar territory, and being smitten towards a young lady, something new. His own cheeks remained flush for it as he sighed haughtily.
"Well, perhaps you and I view proprietaries differently," he said with a frown. "I see nothing wrong with a formal.title or.tongues." And because he knew no better how to react, the man continued to dance with her, albeit it rigidly.

And while her brother was not so easily becoming accustomed to the attentions of a young lady, his sister found herself beneath some interesting scrutiny as she raised her brows towards Jana.
"Well, my angel, that is why you have probably fallen from.grace," she simply.retorted, bluntly. "To be so kind to such an informal family, you must have been reborn a saint! But even such an acquaintance to the family might realize as to why a sister of such a man would only be concerned if such shenanigans were real and well received, but by the looks of it, my brother remains indifferent in his sulks, so my fears of any such relations are hardly even there. And as I stated before, such a.plain girl is hardly a match, but I hold no avarice towards her, for.it seems no one can charm a wolf."

Though as it were so, another Treyburn was charming another guest, as Lady Valia Coleridge found her entire body heating to a flush, and she tensed as her heart fluttered beneath Trev's words as she only could woodenly reply to the steps for the rest of the dance. Truth be told, she was tickled by his words, but in the same swimming breath, had not found herself on the receiving end of true, hot flirtations for some time, and at such words even she found herself embarrassed by her lack to reply in tongue. Though her.blush and teeth biting into her lower lip could not be missed.

Avery was visibly startled by the woman's harsh rebuff and immediately released her, taking a step back. Well, she was a fiery one, wasn't she! Hair and all. "Of course, sorry, I just..." he said quickly, trailing off bewildered. Somehow, though Avery was an unflinching soldier in the field, he had no interest in doing battle with this Miss Rosalina!

But Narwhal wasn't going to let her get away quite so quickly. "Ah, yes! That must be so interesting for you, Miss Rosalina! I'm not sure I've ever even talked to someone involved in trade.."

Avery looked, still bewildered, between the women. He might be a bit intimidated by the redhead, but it didn't really excuse Narwhal's manners. He stooped to pick up the bit of dress still on the ground then, standing back up, asked, "Um, Miss Rosalina, can I, er.... take you somewhere to repair your costume?" Really, he just wanted out of this situation - as much or more than Winnie did, likely! He didn't quite hear the undertones of his suggestion.

Trevian's voice sounded smug as he added in a whisper into her ear, "I didn't think so."  Rather than press the matter, however, he allowed her a chance to breathe and collect herself as the dance ended.  This was a delicate dance; come on too strong, and he was likely to scare his quarry away...  Seduction was about patience, about intrigue, and, in his case, about creating a relationship...and he wasn't about to destroy any chance of a future relationship by crushing the delicate flower beneath his heel.  Instead, still smiling and as gentlemanly as ever, he bowed before the lady and kissed the top of her hand.  "Thank you for the dance, my lady.  I hope you enjoy the rest of your evening."

Kathryn's eyes caught sight of someone approaching from directly behind Oscar, and her smile grew a bit.  "Although, perhaps, if you have no other dance partners, we can enjoy that drink now.  Calent," she said, clearly addressing the tall stag directly behind Oscar.  "May I present Oscar Treyburn, one of the younger sons of Lord Darryn Treyburn of Uthlyn.  Lord Treyburn, my husband, Grand Duke Calent Allarrick."

Illi, completely oblivious to her blushing partner (and thank goodness that was so, otherwise she would have turned bright red herself!), didn't stop pressing the latter issue. She pushed her intonation back towards dramatics and teased, "Ah, then so be it, Lord Callister. Your wish is my command, Lord Callister. And would this Lord Callister like any more wine to loosen his steps? Or does he worry about bloodying his royal skin even more?" If the tone of her voice wasn't enough to key him in on her lack of seriousness, the smile that was starting to break though would have.

With a small snort, Jana muttered, "Illi is not a plain girl, and even if she was, she would be a much better lady than anyone else that anti-social could manage to get." With a sigh, she more clearly added, "This conversation seems to have taken a turn for the worse, and I will take full blame for that. Now I will gladly continue to dance with a lady as lovely as yourself, but I would comprehend if you want to banish me from your thoughts for the rest of your life... just as you seemed to have done the first time."

Pulling Davina to the side of all the dancers, she added, "If it is the former, and you would like to continue our dancing and conversations, I would like to ask for a short break to drink. You see, I have not yet sipped the sweet liquid of the wine here, which I have heard is the best wine in all of the country. And perhaps it would do us both good to loosen the mood."

Where it would seem Miss Rosalina was quickly trying to divert herself away from these social affairs, poor luck and perhaps poor judgement, and equally poor social calls were trapping her in them; even as her heart was beating heavily in her chest as her mind was in a whirl for the only thing she was thinking about was escape, and at present, it wasn't necessarily escape from them, for but moments earlier, Winifred had been on the rebuff of her fiance, and he hesitated not to put her in her place; and she well, not expecting him to react so harshly in public (though not directly so) was only barely healing from a smarting slap her husband to be had to graciously given to her but moments ago. And it might have only been in that moment, as she glared back defiantly at Avery that he might have been able to detect any sort of real pain inflicted upon her face (for she had done well to hide it, with what little time she had to conceal it with powder) as the poor girl glared back at Avery once more.

And oh! The poor man, to think he was so easily an outlet for her anger as she huffed haughtily at such a suggestion, but before she could even retort, her fiance she was trying to flee from arrived on the scene.

"Well, Lord Carwick, I see it is you who have finally caught my fiance. I have been seeking he rout this past song in hopes for a dance," Drake Gassir said with a cool finesse and cat like grin.

And at her fiance's cool but caddy words, Winifred whirled around from where she stood beside Lord Carwick, and did nothing to hide her outward cringe at her man, and the narwahl took no pity in this as she interjected her own words to this 'problem'.

"It seems you are to wed quite a pistol there, my good sir...?" ANd here Mrs. Ophen waited for his introductions, which Drake Gassir delightfully gave with a half-bent bow and taking of her hand.

"Why, I do not believe we have ever properly met, but I am Drake Gassir, tradesman in his own right." And he gave the most handsome of smiles towards the old woman that even made her and the weasel cat blush. "Might I have the pleasure of your acquaintance this eve?"

The narwahl, though flattered, was only partially impressed, fanned herself off with a laugh.
"Lady Averina Delia Ophen," she said with a flutter of her eyes, and despite Winifred knowing there was no competition there (though even if there was, she'd hardly care) found herself gritting her teeth even more as she gripped onto the lace both she and Avery were now clinging to in this awkward moment, just watched as the two others exchanged social proprieties; and even the weasel cat got in beneath his charms, and as he laughed it off and tried to return his attentions back to his fiance, extending out an arm for her to take as he requested at the behest of her, a dance, she notably flinched back and found herself suddenly clinging onto Avery's arm.

"Oh, but where would proprieties be? Lord Carwick had offered to assist me in helping with my tattered garb, for before you had joined us, my fiance," she said with some bite, "Mrs. Ophen heel had the unfortunate consequence to tear into my train, and for the world of me, I'd hate to shame myself with tattered lace on the dance floor. So perhaps you could oblige these women with the next song while I fix myself on your behalf, so that we can dance more properly. After all, think of all the commotion there might be if a man of your stature were to dance with a tattered angel."

Though Drake knew well the game she played, he laughed along with her to save face, and did not hide his scrutiny as his dark eyes took in Lord Carwick with quickness, but sharpness as well.
"Yes, but really, my dear, would you trouble a Lord over such an untrifling matter?" he spoke back to her, with almost the same richness and bite as he batted his dark lashes at the pair, almost laughing off the idea. And at his retort, Winifred sucked in a sharp breath and found herself unbeknowingly pressing up more closely towards Lord Carwick, who, only from his perspective, he might have seen her flinch and perhaps, note the anger and fear, as she stood there, not knowing whether she should laugh along and let her damn fiance win her back, or if she should continue on with this game, which could very well end with both of them being quite embarrassed; especially if it ended quite as badly as their scrap from earlier....

And they were not the only ones enduring quite an odd set of circumstances, for Lord Davishire was growing even redder at Lady Treyburn's jests, having found himself quickly buried in a circumstance for which he was unfamiliar, and his breath grew haughty as the pair continued to dance.
"I hardly see the reason to dash out all such propriety," came his retort sharply as he sighed within the dance, but kept himself somehow composed, perhaps it was due to him being intrigued by such a girl- after all, no one would have such the gall to treat him in such a manner, had he never shown such 'weakness' as he was doing now with Lady 'Illi' Treyburn.
"After all, there is a reason and a place for it, but perhaps not for it all." And again he found himself sighing needfully in order to save face in such a circumstance, for once again, he was quieted by her antics, a sort of reaction a man like he was not used to.

And as Davina took in what Jana said, her brows raised up even higher on her forehead as she observed the other's reactions and took it only to mean the poor angel clearly had it's heart set on Illi Treyburn, which, thankfully for her, meant she had no real worries for Illi and Davishire in that moment as she nodded to oblige.
"I think wine would do quite well for now," she told him with a bow, and waited for 'him' to lead the way. It was definitely... an 'interesting' piece of information, but nothing she herself, could use in her other wise predatory like view on the nobles she could still choose to sample from before selecting a mate. After all, picking a husband, and the right one, was such a tireless chore that, for Lady Davina, was taking quite a number of years to achieve....

And as the dance ended, Lady Valia found herself still quite stunned as Trevian's voice remained as an echo as he smiled and left her to be. Keeping a hand to her chest, she thought over his words carefully before her pink eyes went to seek him out quietly in the receding crowd....

And it was here the Grand Duke thought it necessary to be seen at his wife's side; after all, at such an event, the pair were presumed to make face for most of the evening, so when he approached his wife through the sea of dancing guests, he hadn't been quite prepared that she'd be ready to introduce him to a new acquaintance, and though he knew somewhat of the Treyburn reputation, found himself staring, just half off-guard at the man before nodding his head subtly at the introduction and offering out his own hand in 'hello'.

"It is good to make your acquaintance. I have heard good things about your father." Though naturally, anyone supporting of the military would be at least half seen in the good graces of the Grand Duke himself... even if he himself, were no longer alive and known quirks aside, the Grand Duke did not seemed phased.

As far as Oscar was concerned, this point of the evening was over, at least for now. As such, he was mildly confused at the suddenly broad smile on the Duchess's face. He did not have long to wait to find out why. He whirled at the familiar name, eyes widening behind his mask at the stag that had appeared unnoticed behind him. They were both tall men - of the same height, in fact - and yet it felt for a moment as though the Duke towered over the younger man, staring wordlessly for one long, heart-stopping moment before he held out a hand.

"Th-the feeling is mutual, Your Grace. I thank you." He accepted the hand with as much grace as he could muster, silently convinced that his face had drained of all its blood. "M-my father would have been pleased to hear it." All conjecture, obviously. Oscar wasn't sure if his father had ever been pleased about anything. "The, ah, the Grand Duchess was kind enough to honour me with a dance. I promise she is intact, no damages!"

What? Where had that come from? For Ansgar's sake Oscar, don't sass-mouth the Duke!

Illi raised her eyebrows and was prepared to tease him a little bit more to break through that tough skin of his before she realized that she already had done so. No wonder he was so stiff—both in words and in form! Blushing, she wondered if she maybe should have stopped pushing him out of his comfort zone earlier.

With an apologetic smile, she lightheartedly replied, "Well, Lord Callister it is, then. Unless Lord Davishire would be deemed acceptable? I'm sorry, but my family doesn't deal much with traditions." She paused before adding, "I guess I'm making excuses now, but oh well. Can't have you thinking to lowly of me. Anyway, I'm not quite the social butterfly so normally when I go to social events like this, I'm swarmed by my mother's 'friends' who just insist I call them by their first names. Until I sneak off into a library to read by myself, of course." But that wasn't what happened this time around—not at all. Of course, she also came to this event determined to socialize. After all, she was already twenty-six... and balls were special occasions. Especially in times like this.

She laughed and continued, "I'm ranting again, aren't I? I'm sure there are many more things you would like to talk about than my lack of social life." Well, there were many more things that she would like to talk about, so now he was stuck with it. "How about this—you ask me any question and I'll answer it. And then I get to ask you something. Ah, but here's the catch: we both have to answer every question. So don't ask something you aren't willing to answer yourself. How does that sound?" It seemed like a good enough way to get to know him.

Jana took Davina's arm and they walked together over to the wine. She poured some for both of them, handing the first glass to the lady she was with. In all honesty, she would have preferred if Davina had lost all interest in her. Jana got the feeling that no important information would be stolen from her lips. Nonetheless, she would have to keep up her gentlemanly persona.

"So, Milady, have memories returned to that brilliant mind of yours? Or shall we wish that this fine wine brings them back?" Jana asked, feigning curiosity while truly trying to think of a story that she would be able to use if Davina tried to get her to tell her what she was supposed to be remembering. Or perhaps she would just evade it. Evading seemed like the better option.

The Grand Duke raised his brows at the man's comment, but said nothing to Oscar as he peered over at his wife.
"So it would seem." He'd let Kathryn smooth over any delicacies here, for Calent himself, (and it was known so) could be quite rigid and almost unreadable in his emotional responses, and it was as suc in this moment, his face indifferent but the air, somewhat tense!

And the air was tense elsewhere as Davishire gaped back at the woman at such a suggestion as a game!
"To be honest, I'd rather not," he retorted with a bitter frown. "And I'd feel more comfortable back in the study myself, had I not felt so unwelcomed." Yes, Illi would find it most difficult indeed to get a  man such as he to play any sort of game, for hte girl was lucky enough they were dancing, that was, until the song suddenly came to an end as he sighed. Though he seemed reluctant to leave the dance floor as such, as he kept her beneath his gaze but bowed to her rigidly.
"The dance was nice." And what else was there more to say, as other dancers shuffled and exchanged between one another as the next song had already begun, but there were the pair, standing on the dance floor, unmoving. Were they to share another dance- or was this the end to their awkward shenanigans?

Though Davina kept an eye on the pair, she was most curious as to why Davishire was staring like a dope and not even dancing, so she had to wonder- what sort of affect was this Treyburn girl having on her brother? She might have to intervene...
and it was only Jana's words that drew her back to her angelic partner as she smiled as cooly as she could."I wish for wine, and lots of it," she pressed, for she might need it if she had to dirty her hands over actually interacting with such a family as the Treyburns. To think, she had avoided them thus far and she might have to actually talk to one of them this evening! Think of the gossip over that! Not just ONE Callister speaking to Illi, but TWO! And for their reputation, Davina tredded lightly, for she just wished the fate of their family truly did not rest on her elder brother's shoulders! Her younger brother, Devin, she thought, the one whom she easily puppetted, was obviously much more suitable for the throne of Hellvion! Davishire was just so hard to steer!

Illi's frown matched Davishire's own as he rejected her offers. He said he was having fun, only to ruin the spirit of the night. Was he simply lying about his claims of happiness earlier? She stood still after the dance ended, her mind still processing his words.

But once the words were processed, she finally snapped. "Fine. I'm sorry I made you feel unwelcome, even if my greatest wish was to get you to have a good time. But seeing as I have already destroyed this night on multiple levels, maybe I will just go and read a book. It's a rotten dance, anyway." No, it wasn't. She still wanted to dance. But it no longer felt like the right time or the right way or just plain right.

With a small curtsy, Illi said, "It was nice to meet you, Lord Callister." Then she flipped around and started towards the study again, not even caring that her words got her looks from some of the other party goers. But after passing by a couple of people, Illi twisted her head around and hesitantly added, "Though I must say, I would rather like it if you joined me." A blush spread across her face as she regretted adding in those last words—she was making such a fool of herself! But with nothing else to do, she went to the study (http://www.spiritsoftheearth.net/smf/index.php?topic=15606.20).

Jana scoffed at the scene (though the words were not heard) and glanced at Davina as she replied, "Well, it seems like your dear brother messed that one up, anyway." She was tempted to go after Illi, but knew that wouldn't be good for either of them. Instead, Jana just hoped one of the other Treyburns saw the poor girl.

Avery might suffer some of the same prejudice as the old women, for when Lady Rosalina's fiance came up and introduced himself as a 'tradesman in his own right,' Avery unconsciously thought less of him. It wasn't that he thought people who weren't noble were less worthy, but he distrusted people who came about money by their own devices. Avery believed very much in the entrustment given to nobles to be responsible tenders of their land and the people who lived on it. He was raised with this sense of responsibility, and he didn't trust that people wealthy of independent means had the same sense of responsibility.

The feline grace with which he ingratiated himself to the two women only confirmed these feelings for Avery. But his feelings about 'new money' didn't wholly distract himself from the woman now clutching his arm (only moments after she'd demanded that he unhand her). He noticed the way she cringed away from her fiance, even if the movements were microscopic, and after noticing that, he began to read other clues in her demeanor. He might be entirely wrong, but Avery felt fairly certain that something was going on here, even if he wasn't sure exactly what it was. Ever the gentleman, he would, of course, take the side of the lady.

"Oh, not at all, Mister Gassir," he said affably. "I have two sisters; I know how serious a torn dress can be! And now you've raised the hopes of these two ladies," he inclined his head to Narwhal and Cat Weasel, "it wouldn't be fair of me to deprive them. Especially after I didn't have the good manners to offer a dance myself!"

Out of the corner of his eye, he couldn't help but notice the icy air with which Jillian Treyburn huffed out of the ball room. Seriously, could Davishire accomplish nothing on his own?

Kathryn chuckled softly.  "It was a privilege to dance with someone with your grace.  My husband has many talents, but I'm afraid dancing is not among them."  He was much too rigid, much too fixated on the small details -- in public, at least.  "Lord Treyburn is working towards becoming a professor in Uthlyn.  He teaches students about the stars and some mathematics."

Trevian allowed the space between himself and the fair lady to grow as he made his way across the floor, although, just before he was to vanish into the crowd, he glanced over his shoulder to see if she was watching him...and, he saw with a smile, she was.  Allowing her to see it, he bowed politely to her, then stepped into the crowd to move away from the ballroom.  It was time to get some ice on that jaw before it turned purple!

Oscar flushed deeply, but to his credit did not look away, determinedly keeping eye contact even as he shoved his foot into his mouth. Clearly his weak attempts at humour would not receive a reaction here, though the Grand Duchess was sweet enough to lift a little of the attention. Shooting her a supremely grateful look, he tried for a modest shrug. "You are took kind, Grand Duchess, b-but I'm sure his Grace has far more important things to do than I." He tried to smile at the Grand Duke. It didn't last. "A country is so much more complex than a class of youths, I'm sure."

A subtle brow was raised at his wife's comment about his ability to dance, and though he knew himself a bit stiff, really, only he and his wife ever spoke of it so loosely, so it was the Grand Duke's turn to find himself moving uneasily within his boots. But at Oscar's statement, he simply nodded.

"Hardly, as you see, I'd find myself ill-suited for such a job. I'm sure the complexities of youth are something only a select few might master." Though he himself had not the time to even find out- for he still was without heir, or any child really, for that matter.
"THough I do not see myself as a teacher, I suppose it would be immodest of me to proclaim I have no skills in leadership, or else I would not find myself here." And he gestured towards the grounds all around them, surely it took a certain man to maintain this, and he did not hold that boast for long.
"So is your family fairing well?"
He supposed, to benefit his wife, he could maintain some semblance of small talk, even though he'd rather remain quiet and on his own...

But another individual felt the same, and the moment Illi left, Davishire found himself staring and inwardly cursing himself for the empty space before him. And when, after some time, another woman dared approach him to ask for a dance, he angrily shook his head at her and stormed away. To the study (http://www.spiritsoftheearth.net/smf/index.php?topic=15606.msg162495#msg162495)! Bloody hell if he just let the woman go so upset! And he had to wonder, as he was making his way out, how many times would he offend poor Miss Illi this evening?

Gabriel was annoyed. More than annoyed, really, but he was also weary. It had all happened so quickly, he was barely considered a man when a night of serious misjudgment had seen him engaged and then married in what seemed the blink of an eye. Truly, that wouldn't be so bad. The night of Valia's sixteenth birthday party had been more than enjoyable. So had their little misadventure afterwards, his father still reminded him from time to time that he'd acted a fool. Shortly after being wed he was made a father.

All of those things could have been wonderful. They should be wonderful. Gabe had found quite a remarkable woman to call his wife, and his son was beautiful and perfect(in the eyes of a proud father). Constant bickering made what should have been joy into misery. Where there had been a burning passion was quickly turning to ice. It pained him that Valia still behaved like some silly little girl. He hated seeing the way she flirted with other men, and the way they looked at her. It wasn't only that either. Valia seemed to have distanced herself from him since the baby.

That morning they had fought(again), and he'd come to find that his lovely wife had run off to the ball without him. Gabriel arrived in all his finery, his costume a blaze of red, gold, and pink. It had been designed specifically to compliment the one his wife had worn.  They were the god and goddess of love. Of course, when he arrived finding his wife was immediately put on hold, because there were several people to confront him. It seemed that Valia had enjoyed a very eventful evening. They had even expressed surprise that he had come at all.

Finding himself even more annoyed than before, his green eyes finally found his target. Gabriel watched the entire dance Valia and Lord Treyburn shared, rage simmering through him. The thought of walking up and punching the insolent man in the face crossed his mind, but Valia had endured enough public embarrassment for one evening. Instead he waited until the dance was finished and Lord Treyburn had moved far away.

Deftly he slipped through the crowd, a hunter stalking his prey. Once he was in position behind her, his hand came up to lightly touch her arm, his voice soft with a hint of disapproval. "Enjoying the ball just fine without me, I see."

Whirling around, Valia's eyes went as wide as saucers as her heart went into her throat.
"Gabriel!"
She hadn't expected her husband to show up!

A flash of annoyance seared through emerald eyes but quickly faded away, although his mouth was set in a firm line of displeasure. Why did she have to be so disagreeable all the time?

"You act surprised to see me, my love. Did you think that after planning to attend with you that you running off would make me miss the ball? I'm afraid I'm not so easily discouraged."

There was no real malice in his voice, and he kept his words low and private, not wishing to draw attention to them. Valia had sent enough tongues waggling for one evening. Every hushed whisper made him cringe, he knew what they said about Valia, about his marriage to her.

"Of course I'm.surprised,"she said with a huff of indignation. "Last I spoke to you, you and I were not in a  state of agreement." And her eyes narrowed at his before.she glanced away, finding herself red.faced and uneasy to.suddenly be under the scrutiny of her husband, and again the whisper of others.
"I just assumed you'd rather not be seen with me," she muttered softly, eyes still avoidant of his.

"Valia, when are we ever in agreement about anything?" A sparkle of amusement lit up deep green eyes, and his lips softened into a wry smile. She was always beautiful, but the way her face reddened just made her all the more irresistible, didn't it?

Stepping closer he raised a hand to lightly brush her cheek with his fingertips. "You're my wife, why wouldn't I want to be seen with you? Because we were fighting? Because of your drunken foolishness earlier? Because you were awfully friendly with the Lord Treyburn just now?" He sighed softly.

Valia was.taken back by his affections and words. And as it had been since the baby, she was absolutely afraid  of what getting close to.him meant, for she hadn't been at.all prepared for the pains of child birth, or the responsibilities of motherhood, even when she had finally become more agreeable over the idea of marriage. At least she had wed a man who was to.inherit a title, and, also, had professed he loved her, something she might have secretly requited, but had never truly confessed to.him.  She always had found excuses not.to.commit to.him.with love, even when the first half a year they were very amarous.  but it turns out, child birth did not sit well with her, for even when she might have yearned  for affections, she turned cold the moment the baby would.scream! And why not? What was a mother to do with sucha monster as a baby?!

"I thought you'd.rather stay home with our son," was all she could.find herself retorting, always using the baby as a means to seperate them and alsk as a means to pass blame and even goad from.him a fresh argument, even if.she wasn't fully up.for the.task.

"Yes," Gassir said, blinking incredulously at Avery's words as he forced a smile under the circumstance in which Lord Carwick had backed him into. "Women are most fragile, and I must admit I will never understand why they fuss so much over lace. But I suppose even angel wings might need fixed, I can only trust you'll return my beautiful fiance to me after the next two dances, for I'd assume," he added, blinkingly, "That having such sisters you would know of a rather fast solution."

Gabriel honestly didn't know why Valia kept pushing him away, emotionally and physically. They had been quite a pair when they had first met, argumentative, yes, but also passionate. Now Valia only seemed interested in the arguing part. They didn't talk about it, they didn't talk about anything, they just argued and bickered and it frustrated him. So when she brought up the baby he groaned and his broad shoulders sagged slightly.

"Not this again, please Valia, I don't want to fight anymore, not tonight. Not here. I do enjoy spending time with our son, but not everything is about the baby. You're my wife. I want to spend time with you." Could she really not see that? Maybe she just didn't care; it was Valia, after all. He reached to gently take one of her hands in both of his, if she would let him. "I miss you. We used to enjoy each other's company. I'm trying so hard to make everything work, but I don't know what I'm doing wrong."

"Oh?" It was unusual to see the Grand Duke discomfited, even if it was only for a moment, but Oscar pretended not to notice. Courtesies first, always courtesies first. No more sassing. "Well, they do take some practice to be sure, but both kinds of leadership are important, are they not? Maybe we are simply in the positions we deserve to be - n-not that I'm boasting at all. N-no, definitely not... but it is important for a man to be confident in his field."

But as if this wasn't surreal enough, the Duke had to attempt small talk. Damn it. Oscar swallowed. "Well enough." He said, with a rather hopeless shrug. "Although I daresay they're all finding plenty of entertainment tonight. We are a rather... merry lot. Still, I ah, doubt that there'll be a repeat performance of Lady Valia's predicament-" He hoped. Desperately, fervently hoped. "My siblings aren't nearly as unlucky as I am."

Valia was taken back by his words, and for him to speak them so freely in public. She was hoping that, even if her husband were to attend, she'd be able to thwart such attempts by him, but it seemed it was to no avail, and Valia grew quiet as his words when the new dance started, and dancing couples began to flutter colorfully around them.

"Let's not argue here," Valia said sharply, her eyes wavering with the threats of tears. Really, she had had quite enough of being the talk of scandal for one night!

The Grand Duke outwardly frowned when Lady Valia's 'moment' earlier was brought up.
"Yes, it seems both you and Lady Valia have tremendous bad luck, though I think it would be wise and prudent not to dwell over the matter. After all, I'm sure there is more dancing to be had and the night has many more hours for all to enjoy."

Was she about to cry? Gabriel sighed; he didn't want to argue with her, all they did was fight. Here he was trying not to start anything with her and he had nearly brought her to tears. Maybe he shouldn't have come, it wouldn't have been so bad to just stay at home and enjoy a quiet evening. Of course his father would have scoffed at that idea. Was he becoming a recluse? It wasn't fitting for the son of a duke to forsake attendance at such a grand affair; although he found himself not really caring.

"Whatever you want Valia. It's always what you want." Stiffly he gave a formal bow to his wife, then turned and walked away. It seemed like he couldn't even be in her presence without starting an argument.

"I... yes, yes of course Your Grace. Prudent indeed." He pressed his lips together in a thin line, resisting the urge to hang his head like a child. Normally he felt as though his conversational skills, if not exactly stellar, were at least up to par among other nobles. Here however, he felt as though he were talking to an ice cube, every word coming out of his mouth feeling like precisely the wrong thing to say. Truly, he couldn't tell who was the worse conversationalist here, but that disapproving frown made him want to cringe.

"It is an astonishing party though, Your Grace." He smiled, in an attempt to at least salvage his side of the situation. "A truly spectacular turnout: I haven't seen some of these people in public in years."
Title: Re: Waltz of the Sugar Plum Candies

With the conversation turning elsewhere, the Grand Duke nodded and gestured towards his wife.
"The great lords and ladies enjoying this evening can only thank my wife, for she coined the idea months ago, and were I not to wrapped up within my own affairs to see it, we could have had this ball happening ages ago. I am just glad it seems to be quite successful. The nobility has suffered greatly over the whole war, and it's not exactly an easy thing to digest. I just hope the rest of the guests enjoy this small moment of recreation, and will inspire more evens to come."

And with the conversation turning away from Lady Valia in hopes to deter any more talk, it seemed Valia was already well on her way to making another scene, for as she peered up into her husband's green eyes, her vision grew bleary as tears began to wet her face as he simply walked away. So that's how it was to be? He might as well have slapped her in the face, at least that sort of mark was tangible, and as he walked away from her, she ran off int he other direction, pushing through the other dancers and gaining a lot of questioning looks her way. But once the other nobility noticed the presence of her husbands, the rumors were buzzing around the room.

And it didn't take long for Davina's feathers to get too ruffled over the fact her brother had left the dance hall following a Treyburn girl. And had she not been in another's company, she would have followed after the pair sooner. But as it seemed, Davishire had not returned tot he dance floor as she had hoped, she eventually took her own leave by bowing out gracefully from her angel, promising, whole heartedly, that she'd dream of him that night before she exited and head directly for the one place she presumed her brother might have chased a girl away to...

The Grand Duchess had finally succeeded in catching the eye of a passing servant.  From the tray, she lifted up a pair of drinks -- one for her husband, first, then one for their guest.  If she thought the conversation was going poorly, there seemed to be no indication of it in her pleasant smile.

"Surely, the next ball we have will be in celebration of peace."  It was as neutral as it was soothing, and it was delivered with an air of hope and authenticity that made it difficult to discern whether she was naive and ill-informed or was simply trying to convince herself and those with her.

Jana nodded and bowed back at Davina, wondering if the lady actually would dream of her. And then she realized where Davina was heading. To Illi, who she had just been making fun of. Lovely. Jana quickly scanned the room, only to discover that all of her siblings (in sight) were busy. Oscar was even talking to the Grand Duke and Duchess themselves.

With a sigh, she knew she had to at least check out the situation. Make sure that nothing bad happened. So Jana grabbed a new glass of wine and followed the group to the study (http://www.spiritsoftheearth.net/smf/index.php?topic=15606.msg163981).

"Clearly you don't have sisters yourself, Mister Gassir," Avery said with a good-natured smile. Then added with a faux-ernestness, "Lace is of the utmost importance, as you'd know!"

A titter came from the Narwhal and Weasel-Cat and Avery was thankful for some laughter to break the tension, even if it didn't seem to warm Gassir. "Well, that's settled!" said Weasel-Cat brightly. "And I'm going to claim the first dance with this fine young tradesman!" she added, before Narwhal - who now looked very dour at having been cut off - and took Gassir's arm firmly.

"Oh, we'll do our best," Avery said brightly in response to Gassir's sour remark about a 'fast solution,' "but these things can be tricky." Then, when Weasel-Cat began to steer Gassir onto the dance floor, he turned to Winnifred. "Shall we? I think it's probably best to address this in one of the drawing rooms."

"Oh?" Oscar feigned polite surprise, though truth be told it had been rather obvious. The Grand Duke didn't seem the sort to waste time on party planning. "Well, whoever brought it to mind, I congratulate them and their forethought." His smile flickered from husband to wife and then back again. "With tensions so high, I'd think it prudent to lift the dark clouds from around our heads a little. Even if it's only for a time."

He bowed his head in thanks, smile broadening as the Duchess handed them both a drink, good as her word. However, the smile faltered at her comment, becoming something a shade sadder. "Yes," he sighed, taking a careful sip of his drink. "I hope so, too, Your Grace. I should be very glad to see that."

Sadly though, a pessimistic and fretful part of him did not believe it.

The conversation was awkward at best, the Grand Duke giving a glance to Oscar for his blatant honesty. He only nodded, having nothing really to say on the matter, especially since his wife spoke of peace when he knew very well this war, unfortunately, would last for years.

The Duchess seemed unconcerned by the poor reactions her comment had garnered -- she had learned what she wanted in mentioning the war.  Rather than linger on the subject, she steered the conversation safely away to other matters.

"I apologize, but I'm afraid the Grand Duke and myself have some other business to which we must attend."  Her eyes had settled, momentarily, on a figure on the other end of the room, but they returned to Oscar now with an earnest smile.

"If you haven't done so already, I suggest you visit our own observatory, my lord.  The sight is quite lovely..."  With a mischievous giggle, she added lightly, "If, that is, you can tear your eyes away from the stars..."

(OOC: So we can let Oscar go romp elsewhere!)
