Tobin stared at the cart almost hungrily. The merchant of the cart was standing in front of it, calling out to potential customers. Sir, sir, why not buy a ring for your lady? Perhaps a necklace? But the merchant was not having the best of days and was easily ignored by the folk of Reahj who passed by.

It'd be easy for Tobin to sneak behind the cart, where no eyes bothered to go, and his slender fingers could reach up for a necklace. It would be quick, it would be easy and in no time, he'd be able to sell the necklace to a sneaky merchant who had no problem turning his nose from the question of how Tobin had possibly put his hands on such a pretty necklace.

He could easily steal it.

But why didn't he?

Something tugged at him from deep inside, and refused to let him grab the jewelry.

Tobin gave a rough sigh. He eyed the sparkling necklace on the cart once more and then glanced at the pleased merchant who had finally attracted a mousy customer.

Good for you, Tobin thought sourly. Good for you Mr. Merchant who can go home tonight and stretch in front of a warm fire and enjoy some wine with a lovely wife.

He clenched his jaw and turned, stiffly weaving through the thin crowd of people as they wandered the streets of Reahj. He ignored the looks of disapproval, but couldn't help but smolder when he caught the look of displeasure when someone else ran into him. He decided to shove back.

A man. A large man. He decided to shove a large man, who looked almost like a bear. He was certainly hairy enough to be a bear. The man grabbed his arm and shouted,"Watch what you're doing, fool!"

Tobin frowned and broke from the man's grip. He walked away quickly.

"Stop there, child!"

Tobin continued to walk through the crowd, ignoring the sound of the man's irritated growl. He didn't dare let himself run when he heard the bear man thunder after him. However, when the man's paw landed on his shoulder, with a shout of I want to teach you a lesson, child!, Tobin turned and punched him in the jaw.

Tobin paused. Although the man's hand was slow as he brought it gingerly to his jaw, his eyes grew cold rapidly. Tobin, cursing himself, turned and ran, knowing clearly that the man was pursuing him.

What a marvelous way to spend your seventeenth birthday.

Tobin easily lost the man, but as he turned a corner, he bumped into something solid. With a pathetic yelp, Tobin fell to the ground.
