Thread location: The Veranda

Duke Leif Arrant bit into the end of his cigar, smoke welling inside his mouth in thick, rich rolls. He exhaled smoothly, leaning against the balcony of the most secluded section of the Veranda he could afford. He hated being here, the stiff dresses, the snot nosed aristocrats, who- not a one of them were unlike his late father, in which he despised wholly.

It was times like these he missed his wife the most. He never thought he could have fallen in love, and as hard in love as he fell as he had with Valentina. But she had been in the grave how many years now? He had plenty of time to mourn, but the hole in his heart would not go away.

Love was a rare thing for a man as he, one reserved and bitter against the rest. Though he knew many sought him out, greedily knowing of his availability to wed now, and with no heir and still being quite young....
It made him scowl all the more into his cigar.

He already had avoided not one, not two, but at least four hopeful fathers of daughters who they were far too easy to try to throw his way. He, of course, rejected each, and not in the least bit polite. He was a god damn duke, and it was his god damn father's fault. And he'd be bitter about it all until he was long rotting into his own grave (and who knew, if life existed after death, he'd remain bitter even after death).

But if he were to suffer, so would the rest of the world. Knowing the ruthless men out there, all being of common blood and mind as his father, he unfortunately realized he was, if anything, the best fit man for his job. He was at least, mostly, level headed, and not completely eyes deep into the idea that all mages must suffer. His father had, after all, sold off his very own sister of all people, ot the church itself where- he couldn't even imagine the horrors she'd suffer- all the while everyone believed she was dead! (and at least, the whole world still presumed she was dead- he just hoped, wherever she was, it was far, far away from the church at last.)

He was blowing smoke through his nose now, looking very much like steaming bull. Perhaps it was that image that kept most away from him, except one brave servant that refilled his drink. Yes, best to get at least a little drunk. But he still had to keep his head.

Even still, he knocked back and finished his second drink.
He could definitely use a third.

It seemed a lot of men had gone to the veranda. There were, after all, so many men in attendance. It was perhaps strange he found himself in the company of one of the strongest females there. The only other might have been Alanna Mercer, the guest of honor for the evening, but who knew where she had gone.

Sweet wine seemed best at a time like this, and he preferred it, were he to be honest. Most men claimed a stiffer, stronger tasting drink was best. But living in the castle refined his tastes and he only took to the best of things. Naturally, he ought to indulge. It was one of the perks of working for the Grand Duke in his castle.

He got himself a sweet wine wine and turned to General Kilandre, whom he had guided up onto the veranda from the wide, spiraling stairs that came up from the northern lawn (http://www.spiritsoftheearth.net/smf/index.php?topic=23654.msg354647#msg354647) in which the pair had come. Any sweat they may have collected at least cooled off byt he time they had gotten their drinks, but his throat was still parched, and he drank nearly the entire goblet in one go.

"You should try to Allarrian White Wine named Dusk. It's by far the most superb wine in all of Connlaoth." Maybe even the world. He nodded to a servant to poor him more, and a second goblet for Hakon. "Some like their wines more better. But this one is tapered with a refined sweetness, making it taste as if the angels of Ansgar's army fermented it themselves."

With the ceremony (http://www.spiritsoftheearth.net/smf/index.php?topic=23652.msg354303#msg354303) itself finally over, Alanna had fled to avoid being dragged into the ballroom. While she had been informed of the military contests to take place on the northern lawn, she found she had no interest in showing off for sport. Instead she wound her out onto the veranda where she could hopefully find some peace even if it was only in the bottom of a wineglass.

Alanna accepted the glass offered to her by a servant before moving to lean against the railing, observing the figures out on the lawn. She was glad she had not joined them out there when she caught sight of Zannrick's familiar head of hair. That was a nightmare she just did not need tonight.

But, as luck would have it he began to make his way up the steps with General Kilandre. It was times like these when she missed her husband the most. Roland had always known how to read her moods and keep her company. Alanna drained her glass before placing it on a passing tray and grabbing another one. Thinking of her dead Mordecai husband would not heal her heart regardless of all the years that had passed.

She moved to join the cloud of puffing smoke that somewhere in there housed a man. "Duke Arrant," the woman greeted quietly, raising her glass in solidarity to him. Once more she leaned against the railing, sipping her wine. Alanna never was one for small talk but at least if she stood near the duke then perhaps people would leave her well enough alone if only to avoid the cloying smell of his cigar.

Of all the people to approach the brooding duke, Leif never could have bet his life on it being the new Grand Master Mordecai. Inwardly he swore as he exhaled the rest of his smoke through his nose as he took her in- all plated up, armor reflecting off the stars that were peeping over the palace shadows.

No doubt she'd have a long tail of followers waiting to squawk at her for attention and praise. And if she were looking for it here, she had chosen the wrong corner to fall into. But he wasn't without etiquette, he'd at least bow to her as rigidly and shortly as possible, even as his dark green eyes kept a bitter simmer.

"Grand Master, or would it be, Grand Mistress?" He gestured forward with a nod of his glass. "If you're out here for a drink, I'd suggest something stronger than Allarrian wine." He knocked back his own stiff drink, finishing it off and let his gaze fade past her, wondering if that brave servant might come back again. He wasn't drunk enough to handle this woman just yet-
or any conversations, for that matter. And he wasn't about to oblige her, even with propriety, in starting one. She had, after all, intruded on his smoky little corner.

General Kilandre gratefully grasped the cup that Sir Austengarde had offered, murmuring her thanks as she tilts her head idly toward him," I had no idea you were also a great critic of wines," she mused, thoughtfully taking a sip of this proclaimed 'Best Wine In Connlaoth', she was not too keen upon downing another almost horrifyingly sweet beverage, but he was correct. The taste of the wine was sweet yet in a balanced way, perhaps it had been allowed to age less then its red counterpart. As she mulled over this possibility her ees wondered, briefly focusing on the Grand Master- tilting her head slightly as she observed the woman sidle up to a man whom she had vaguely recognized as a Duke. A sinking filling filled her chest as she watched, perhaps the Duchess upon the lawn's cynical attitude had been correct, and Hakon's worst fear was realized? That this woman had not - in fact, worked for such a position?

She grimaced slightly, pushing these thoughts aside, what would that due to the young girls of this nation? The young Mordecai and Adharas? No- no- she was growing paranoid for nothing. Someday she would have to speak to the Grand master to truly make her judgement. Ah- perhaps politics and constant warfare were wearing upon her ability to calm. Shaking her head, she took another sip of the balanced wine, glancing back to Sir Austengarde with relatively bright eyes," Though I've never been one to particularly like wine, I must say, sir, you have quite the refined taste-" flashing small smirk and adding a teasingg," Bravo, sir."

"It comes with the territory," Zannrick assured her with a stiff nod. "When you remain at the Grand Duke's side for as long as I have, you find yourself at the disposal of a much refined life style."

It was only then did he noticed Alanna Mercer herself from the corner of his eyes. He wasn't sure he wished to approach her or not. History aside, what was to be said to the woman that night that already hadn't been said? But it was propriety that he probably should seek her out for at least a brief chat or dance.

For now, he remained immersed with the General. He knew her not quite as intimately as he had Alanna, and he sought to remedy that as much as she probably did with him.

"You're a busy woman and I have no doubt you've seen much of Connlaoth. I hope, for all of our sakes, this evening only aids in your endeavors. It seems.. though our Grand Duke holds many prejudices, this era seems a lot more... open to blessed women and a rise of power. It's... refreshing." Though perhaps refreshing wasn't the honest word. It was peppered to make it sound better than he felt about it. In truth, he did feel a woman's place was in such a seat of power- be it a General or Grand Master.

But he'd hold his tongue. If anything, he was probably the best match at the position in which Alanna held. Part of him was a bit angered fate would never allow him such a seat. But he sold himself to the crown long ago.

"I hope the men you're commanding are treating you with respect. I know some of the men that were once commanded beneath General Mordeth behave little more than dog like. It is a shame what happened to him. He was a powerful asset to the war, even if his methods were questionable- they were at least favorable."

Flashing a vague smile, she nods faintly," Of course, of course- I am unsure if you could survie otherwise," she reasons softly, taking another small drink. She was hesitant to delve into personal details, as she felt somewhat clubky in such endeavours especially within a high society setting. Nonetheless, she tried," If I may, sir Austengarde, where did you grow up?" She inquires idly, off-handedly, attempting to convey without saying it that he could dodge the question if he so chose.

She moved slightly away, to the railing of the Veranda, resting a hip slightly against the ornate stone as she turned to gaze at him, the slightly damaged next gracing her neck seeming to glitter eerily against her dark skin.

Zannrick followed after her, a refreshed drink in hand. She might have looked stunning in the evening light, but so many women that came here did. Even himself, was as beautiful as a man could be, refined, clean cut, handsome.

At her question, he took a drink and let the wine roll around his tongue.
"I grew up near the capital of Allar. In fact, I've known the Grand Duke himself personally, when we were at a younger age."

Tilting her head, her eyes brightening curiously," Really? How long?" She presses carefully, takig another sip, resting the fine wine upon her tongue for a moment to allow the flavor to be truly appreciated before swallowing. As she stood across from him, she took a moment to search his face, his eyes, take note of his armor- attempting to figure this man out and yet... She found herself somewhat confused, as if a wall kept her from truly 'seeing' him as she did so many other. It was vaguely infuriating but even more so intriguing.

Shifting her weight slightly, she tilted her head back gently, eyes flickering to the moon and back.

Perhaps it was the alcohol, but his tongue fell lose, information coming easily.
"You could say I knew him since birth, as our families had been close. I suppose the same could be said for today. Old habits die hard." Or something of that nature.

He cleared his throat, and moved to drink more wine. There was never enough in these situations. His cup was nearly empty.

"But I came to know him better when he trained where I had with the mordecai stationed in Allar."

Something about that name 'Allar' immediately piqued her interest. But why? She couldn't put her finger on it. Nonetheless, she noted his empty chalice, waving over a servant before focusing back on Xannerick," That long? Thats incredible I must say- was the Grand Duke trained with the Mordecai? I haven't heard of such instances where non-Mordecai were trained within our ranks..." she trailed off. Yes, occasionally normal soldiers trained alongside the Mordecai but she had yet to have heard of one whom trained as a Mordecai without being such.

"His training there had been brief. But his father, The Duke of Allar, wanted only the best for his son." He swished the remains of his drink in his cup. "Wouldn't we all? This whole war, after all, is to preserve and protect the world in which our father's have shaped for us, won for us, and have made great."

Tilting her head back, she nodded and closed her eyes," You are correct, we must fight to protect our traditions, and keep the land free of unholy..." she trails off, searchingbfor the correct word," influences." She finishes her own wine, already feeling a warmth encircling her cranium, causing her to relax further.

" Tell me, Sir Austengarde, what of you? What do you fight for when it truly comes down to it," she muses gently

"I prefer Grand Master if it's all the same," she replied with a grateful nod. Swirling the wine in her glass, she eyed it in contemplation. "I'm not sure as to whether or not it is wise to get drunk at your own ceremony. But then I've never been one for these fancy gatherings." Glancing towards the duke she bowed her head in apology. "Not that I mean any offense Duke Arrant. Country, farm girls just really aren't meant for galas and balls."

With a sigh she nodded her head to her glass. "What would you recommend instead then?"

She was how many years into this bloody war and she was groaning about her simple ancestry? Then again, he supposed he grew up around all of this frilly nonsense. Were he an outsider, he supposed he'd never want to keep indulging in this taste. Even still, he wasn't being critical. Leif Arrant already presumed he hated everyone here. Her, by default, unfortunately, fell under that category, and he wasn't about to make any exceptions. She was, more or less, an enemy as far as he was concerned, political or other wise.

"Vodka or rum are by far stronger, and actually taste like their poison," he told her coldly, and sucked in another drag from his cigar. "Or if you want to look even more out of place, you could always share one of my cigars."

And it was probably for the best that Duke Arrant and the guest of honor were seen far off in a corner, away from prying eyes (for the moment) because a frantic  house maid came rushing out onto the veranda, eyes desperately seeking for something.. or someone.

That someone was a young baby, just barely learning to walk. Had anyone known of his true lineage he might have been carried about on a pearl trimmed pillowf or all to gawk out. But the Grand Duke wanted none of that for the child named Hope. Even if it was his son, a bastard, he kept the child tucked away, along with her mother- fighting, for the moment, the prying hands of the church. He was trying all cards, and even contemplating marriage of this commoner to keep the church from claiming the child. So were he to see him unattended..
The servant could very well hang.

The baby had strangely found it's way to his most favorite person of all within this place, and before Zannrick could even indulge General Kilandre with an answer, there was a coo and tug at his leg and Zannrick looked down- staring right into the bright green eyes of baby Hope.

His chest fell and his eyes went steely and cleaved through the crowds trying to seek out her- the whore who was the mother of this most important child. But he didn't even see the servant desperately seeking for the child, and he wasted no time scooping Hope up into his arms as the little baby dribbled a coo at the sight of Zannrick, fat baby fingers smacking against the shiny armor he seemed to love so very much before trying to reach out for Zannrick's curly white hair.

"Forgive me, General. It seems one of the maids here has either died, or failed miserably at her job." The baby cooed more as Zannrick was forced to cradled the baby close. "Perhaps we can finish this conversation later."

The General observed the child with vaguely wide eyes. Only one toddler currently ruled these coordiors," Hope?" She murmurs and furrows her brow, looking about," How in Ansgar's name did she get here?" Her eyes flickered about before fixing upon the fluttering figure of the desperate maid. That woman- would be put on the chopping block for this... It was a shame but to loose the child at a time such as this was utterly unforgiveable. Pursing her lips, she turned to Zannrick, tilting an eyebrow, he seemed neither particularly enthused nor caring to be holding the child.

" Sir Austengarde, perhaps you would like some assistance in locating the one responsible for the child?" She suggests, she had little to no maternal instinct of her own - so the prospect of being abandoned with the care of a child as such a gilded charade even caused the General to inwardly cringe.

Zannrick scowled.
"No, I know exactly where this child belongs." With his damned mother who also ought to be on that chopping block! But he had heard her mention the child's name and that made his scowl grow worse.

"And as you've guessed, yes, it's the child, Hope."
Little Hope gurgled and laughed happily as his fat little fingers finally grabbed onto Zannrick's hair and gave a pull- the white haired man making a face, but not screaming, even if the damn bastard was pulling his hair nearly out of his head.

He managed to pull his hair free, glaring down at the baby who was still trying to reach for those locks again.
"I'll handle him. I don't think neither me, nor the child, need another escort. Please, enjoy yourself here at the ball." And he bowed deeply towards General Kilandre- another action that left him open as Hope reached and grabbed onto more hair.

Hakon Kilandre immediately noted the foul expressions, her gut instantly warning her to take the child from him. She wasn't safe in his arms. Not in the slightest. Perhaps... No- she couldn't let her suspicions get out of hand once more. Alas, the General murmurs," I will return shortly, Sir Austengarde," as she turns upon her heel, she pauses; reaching out to squeeze his shoulder in the manner one soldier would another," Patience." Was the last word she left him with before rushing after where she had observed the fluttering, panicking maid.

It did not take long to locate the woman looking beneath one of the long tables of food. Immediately the General grasps the woman's and hauls her to her feet, causing the maid to gasp and sputter," G-General Kilandre I'm so sorry I-!"

" The Child is with Sir Austengarde, follow me closely, do not lose sight of me." Her voice was simply a low growl, short, barking but low enough not to draw too much attention as she releases the maid once more," You are in a world of trouble already."
Her heels snapped against the floor as she strode away, back to the Veranda with her hands folded behind her back and statue that of an unamused drill sergeant.

Mere minutes after she disappeared, the General makes her appearance, striding over to Zannrick once more," Sir Austengarde," she calls shortly, knowing he would likely do the tongue or literal lashing from here.

Alanna chuckled, the corner of her mouth lifting in a light smirk. She took absolutely no offense to the duke's brusque nature, finding it instead much more true to what she was accustomed to. "Careful with the offers you make Duke or I just may take you up on them. However, I feel that I have disturbed your small corner of peace quite long enough now. Thank you for the minor sanctuary. I'll leave you to your cigar and drink," she bid with a small nod of her head as she took her drink and attempted to retreat.

"The corner was a nice place for sanctuary," he replied simply, and nodded to her retreating form. He wasn't about to ask her to stay. He rather liked being alone, even if he couldn't have realized how so much alike he and the new Grand Master really were.

And it was only as she left did Duke Arrant notice there was some sort of child in the arms of Sir Austengarde. He didn't want to have to deal with whatever drama that entailed. A child at an event was like a slap to all of the nobles faces. He smashed out the end of his cigar on the balcony before tossing it over the side. He could easily afford another one. Then he made his exit from the veranda and into the ballroom (http://www.spiritsoftheearth.net/smf/index.php?topic=23655.msg354849#msg354849)..... just as Sir Austengarde turned to address General Kilandre, and his eyes fell upon the cowering woman at her back. And if looks could kill, that woman was already dead.

He grabbed the maid and dragged her forward, giving her a rough shake.
"You've made a mockery of the crown. Follow me. The child must get to his mother."

He turned to Hakon and gave her a nod.
"Thank you for your help."

Turning on his heels, child in hand and a cowering maid behind him, he nearly walked clean into the guest of the evening...

"Alanna.." Her name, informal as it was, spilled from his mouth long before he could correct himself. And Hope turned around, a fist full of Zannrick's hair, and cooed happily at the sight of Alanna in her shiny armor too, as his fact little baby hands reached out for her in the moment, eyes glittering and completely unaware of all the chaos he had just caused.

The General nods shortly, observing his leave, she would have moved to stop him, to take control. Had the Grand Master of the Mordecai not been there. She hung back instead, leaning against the railing as the warm buzz of the wine began to press upon her cranium comfortably. However the woman reacted would perhaps be telltale of much more, so the General hung back, crossing her arms over her chest.

As she observed, she mulled over her time with Zannrick. He was not the most pleasant man in the world, but when he relaxed, he was utterly human. Which was more that could be said for others - it was reassuring. Nonetheless, she hoped to meet him again on similarly relaxed terms though she planned upon doing some digging regarding his relation to the Grand Duke's child. He seemed to hate the child, and her gut only confirmed this suspicion. She only wondered what she would find.... Vaguely.

She had only taken a few steps, her gaze searching for another drink-carrying servant when she had to suddenly full-stop as she nearly plowed right into Zannrick. The drop of her given name off his lips caused her to raise a brow in a silent question even as her eyes flashed in warning. There would be no repeating their drunken mistake together nor did she wish to interact with him anymore than necessary. The past would remain firmly buried in the past if she had anything to do with it.

Alanna soon noticed the babe in his arms though and she took a half-step back, her eyes widened in surprise. She had never been a mother; never really had the chance to if she was being honest with herself. As such the mothering instinct did not strike her and instead she found herself more willing to rib Zannrick rather than help him. "You seem to have your hands quite full, Austengarde. I didn't realize that you had been made to stoop so low as to be knighted the official function babysitter. Do they make you change nappies too then?"
Title: Re: Stargazing

How long had it been since he had a private talk with Alanna? Too long, it seemed. His expression soured at her words. Obviously she was not happy to see him. He adjusted the weight of the babe in his arms and once again, yanked Hope's hands from his hair. Why was the child so sticky?

"Careful of your tongue, Grand Master," Zannrick warned, for he, by no means, was afraid of her nor her title. "This is the child that gives us all Hope."
And he couldn't believe even he used such a line, but only now he found use of it to smack it back at Alanna's face. No one, even he, who despised the child's mother, would disgrace the child known as Hope, the one the church so much praised.

"He might not be the guest of honor, but should still be made respected to." Which is why the woman behind him was just about in tears. "And you know my place well enough, Grand Master."

What an off and rude comment!

The General winced vaguely, that was the least sort of comment she was expecting. What was with everyone having such a sour tongue upon first meeting another? She made her move, striding forward and clearing her throat, as she quickly swiped a drink from a nearby servant and offered it idly to Alanna while simultaneously glancing toward Sir Austengarde," Sir Austengarde, do not fret-" she chides as lightly as she could, which was rather easy now that she was ever so slightly drunk, not enough to be noticeable alas,"- Allow me to take over, the Grand Duke did order you to enjoy yourself, yes?" She extends a hand idly, invitingly.

She still felt the need to get the child away from him, not to mention from this particular confrontation. Perhaps she should have made her move earlier; but it was too late for wishing to go back now. Briefly she glances at the Grand Master, offering a bright and surprisingly lovely smile. Were it not for the vicious scars upon her dark skin and muscled form, one could have mistaken her for a surprisjgly pleasant noblewoman.

Alanna snorted softly, not at all offended by Zannrick's remark. He had been there when she first trained. He would always see himself in that role not matter how she climbed through their ranks and made a name for herself. Hearing him use such a corny line only made her shake her head as she fought not to laugh aloud.

"You misunderstand me then Austengarde and take me for a cotton-headed fool. I would never disrespect or slander an innocent child, especially not Connlaoth's Hope." She smiled as the child gurgled and despite Zannrick's best efforts latched onto his hair again. Hope certainly knew how to push all of the man's buttons even better than Alanna did.

The Grand Master was saved for saying more though as General Kilandre popped in and supplied her with a drink, much to Alanna's amusement. She accepted it easily with a slight tilt of her head in greeting but otherwise held her tongue as the other woman attempted to intervene.

"Unfortunately, my ladies, I must part for the moment. Above all else, I've been sworn to the Grand Duke's aid, and knowingly, the child's fate is with me." He did nod politely to Hakon, even at her offer to help. But this was his affair. He'd dealt with this child on too many occasions and it was not for .. outsiders to pry into the truth lying behind the walls. No, he'd take the child to it's mother, scold her, condemn the servant and return to the party in a flash. It wouldn't do well if he remained absent for too long. Besides, it would do equally worse if Calent knew Hope was out here, in the public's eye.

He moved to relinquish the child's hold on his hair again as he turned to the Grand Master once more. Her reply had soured him again, even though he tried to displace her comment elsewhere. He wouldn't dignify that with a response.

He nodded to the women before taking his leave.
"I do hope you both enjoy the evening."
And he was gone.

As he departed, the General offers a slight bow of her head, another platinum lock springing free of the ornate braid that swaddled her head like a crown before straightening again, observing the man's back until he disappeared. She would know. One way or another.

Nonetheless, the General turns her attention fully upon Alanna Mercer. Taking her in now- tearing her apart cell by cell to examine her worth of taking Hakon's former mentor's place. Idly, the young woman tilts her head to one side, offering a wry smile,"... What should one make of such a situation, Grand Master Mercer, I wonder?" She wonders aloud, tilting an eyebrow. She was not only asking this question for irony's sake but also to gauge her counterpart's reaction. As of now, as of the death of the Grand Duchess and their daughter's young age, both her and Alanna Mercer were the most powerful women in Connlaoth. It was only right... Alanna eyed Zannrick's departure darkly. Her anger with him had been harsher than she had meant it to be. The sight of him with a baby in his arms though had invoked a buried emotion she had long since forgotten existed. She was quickly drawn from her dark looks and darker thoughts by the general's comments.

"Nothing at all, General Kilandre. It is not our place to do so, after all," she intoned softly. Whatever her thoughts might be, Alanna was not about to voice them aloud and in such a public place. Instead, she then took a sip of the wine Hakon had given her and nodded her head again in acknowledgement of it. "Thank you for this."

Offering a wry smile, admittedly rather pleased with the cryptic answer, the General shrugs gently in response. Idly cradling an elbow as she pressed one hand thoughtfully to her cheek," Of course, it seemed like a good way to offer not only a pleasant buzz but an excuse to end-" she waves her hand, as if picking the correct word from the air,"- any relative tension." Her bright hazel-grey eyes flicker once as she looks toward the palace before focusing back on the Grand Master.

" Well, I do hope you will indulge me in some idle chatter, Grand Master Mercer - I am quite intrigued by your sudden appointment and you yourself," she quirks an eyebrow with a half-smile," It's a shame I did not know you sooner,"

The Grand Master observed the General stoically. She hated idle chit-chat as much as she hated having to go through the farce of a pompous ceremony. Alanna hummed deeply while drinking more. "It's true I suppose that Adhara and Mordecai do not often work or train in the same social circles. I'm sure that accounts for it," she stated, her eyes glancing about slightly to take in the other guests in the room. Once a soldier, always a soldier, Alanna would not be caught unawares again. Zannrick had ensured that she needed to be more vigilant now.

Shrugging faintly, the General's fingers curled upon her cheek- the smallest twitch of her lips, her eyes- was she annoyed already? Hm- Hakon smiled wryly," I must say I've heard nothing of your service to Connlaoth-" she may as well get the big question out of the way,"- and though I trust the Grand Duke to appoint someone of skill and value to such a position, what is your own... Opinion of your experience?" She inquires idly, gently beckoning forth a Servant, murmuring her thanks as she was given another glass of the white Wine.

In most settings, Hakon was sure her question would be met with scalding retortment, but if the Grand Master answered steadily, perhaps there was some hope.

Alanna's eyes flashed steely in warning. Hakon may have been a General and they both may have belonged to different factions but Alanna still outranked her. She was not one to take an insult laying down either. If it were not for their current setting then the Grand Master would have most assuredly given the other woman a piece of her mind, barking in the same manner she did her own soldiers.

Instead, she placed the half-finished glass of wine on a passing servant's tray and turned to face Hakon head on. "If you have not heard of me Hakon Kilandre then clearly you have not been paying attention," she replied lowly. "I have fought in this war for ten years now, same as you. I was with the Mordecai for ten more before that," she continued, speaking in a completely level tone as if speaking to an old friend. "I married a Mordecai and he died six years ago on the battlefield. I trained under Zannrick Austengarde. I even earned myself the nickname "The Lioness." So if you have not heard of me then perhaps that is of your own ignorance for I most certainly have heard of you and the men you've lost, General."

Beautiful. Just as she expected, but perhaps with more blatant insult. Idly, she brought the glass to her lips, taking a small sip,"... If you can save everyone in every battle you have participated in, then I shall bow to you now and kiss the ground you walk on for the rest of your days," she answers cooly," I have personally lost, yes, but to say I have lost overall is quite the reach, Grand Master. But men and woman, combatants and civilians are always lost in war; but that is why it is called War. Nicknames and rumors can be no more smoke and mirrors then the illusions of power so many often delude themselves with." Truth be told, she was somewhat appalled the self-proclaimed Lioness would bring up the loss of life. War was all about killing as many combatants as possible- she lost men all the time, but so had the enemy.

Another sip, she gazed unblinking at the woman, her hazel-grey eyes offering no emotion but for the half-smile the quirked her lips," I have been listening, never fret; my eyes and ears are fully open to you. Many ask the question, I only seek a decisive answer, it was the same when I rose to my rank," turning her head slightly toward the palace, she swirled the white wine about in its chalice, blinking slowly. Her stance was akin to a parade rest, and yet, held a casual air about it," All many know of you is that your husband was a man of prominence and soldier at that, some will accuse you of gaining this position solely through the use of womanly charms-" her gaze slid back to the Grand Master, the woman was older then her, and yet..."- I would like to see you prove them otherwise. Which is why I ask of your experience," Her voice held sympathy, yet it seemed guarded, she had been answered with a rather vicious jab and thus... Found it increasingly difficult to empathize with her counterpart. Another sip, her gaze level and utterly unmoved by the Grand Master's outburst. Whatever the General was thinking, it was truly unreadable upon her face.

" I would prefer to ask the woman in the center of all this rather then go off the words of another." Instinctively, she hoped that the Grand Master would cool and realize that her words were not out of spite but concern, curiosity. But perhaps, in this day and age, it was too much to hope for.

After her less than great reception on that little field just there, Adalia had wandered the halls, picked up a few glasses of far too sweet wine from the servants and had found herself with quite the buzz, a decent flush and a bit of a sore ego. The looks she'd gotten from the people were disgusted at best. A servant even gave her a once over and couldn't hide the little sneer.

Adalia was under no illusion as to why she wasn't wanted here.

It still sucked though and she gave a slow walk towards the veranda.

Ah. More wine!

A small hum and she took an oddly half empty glass from a servant on his way by and knocked it back very much unladylike before she put the empty glass on the dumbfounded servants platter. Little did she know, it was the Grand Master's left behind glass. If Adalia knew she'd insist on being friends.

Adalia's jade green eyes lit up when she saw the blonde woman from the field below and she brightened considerably.  "Ah!" She started, making her way over, making sure her gloves were set above her elbows. Of course she overheard. Were they fighting? Quiet cat fight? Didn't the blonde one just give her a hard time about something-something Connlaothian Women? Adalia squinted and stood off to the side, looking between the two and listened - eavesdropping didn't count if you were obvious right?

The way the light played on her hair, changing it from blue to green to pink it made Adalia quite obvious. Of course, her head perked up when she hear'd the tall blonde one say 'prominence'. Ooo, maybe she'd read about her husband! Then again... Adalia looked the woman up and down. Full armour at a party. She looked familiar though.

"Womanly charms?" Adalia laughed from off to the side, taking another glass of wine from a passing servant, "I think that would require womanly features," a smirk into her glass and she took a sip before she looked Hakon over. Ah.... Was that a tear by her neck? A shift of her weight so she was resting on one leg, her dress giving her a curvy silhouette and she nodded to the blonde woman. "I'm sure you have those in abundance, don't you? I see that little rip there from your event with Sir Austengarde. You look flushed my dear, did you two go hide behind a bush? I can see why, he's quite handsome."

A glance to the armored woman again and ... Oh.

"I apologize," She stated to the woman in armor, sobering a little, blinking widely before she smiled. Wide and big and obviously a little drunk from all the alcohol, "I didn't recognize you. I've tried to read up on all the politics going on in your country. Mordecai and Adhara still escape me as a concept - I'm sure you understand why - Just... I heard her mention your husband was a man of prominence?" Adalia leaned in slightly, blinking, "Have I read about him? Would I have? My cousin was a High Lord in Serendipity so I'd... Never had to keep up with these things like I do here. That was all his job."

Adalia perked again and she smiled to Hakon- there was much to learn after all! "And you? Is your husband prominent? I'm still trying to catch up on all this Being a Duchess business and I'm just... So very confused as to how being a woman works in this country."

Alanna could not believe the words she was hearing come pouring out of Hakon's mouth. Rumors were one thing but all but accusing Alanna of having no merit or accomplishments of her own was a completely different matter entirely. It was nevertheless amusing though how the other woman could dare insinuate that Alanna of all people could gain rank by tumbling between a man's sheets.

She was saved from answering though as the pair were interrupted by a third, far more inebriated woman. Alanna lifted a brow in amusement as she watched the pair before her. The slight insult cast her way bounced off her easily as it was one she happened to agree with. Alanna had never been meant for the finer life of nobles. There was nothing truly feminine about her.

To make matters even more amusing, the newcomer was accusing Hakon of having her own little romp with Zannrick. Alanna politely coughed into her fist, clearing her throat. "No harm done Duchess Draven and congratulations on your wedding. May it be a blessed union," she stated with a bob of her head.

"To answer your question though, I am afraid I don't quite understand what General Kilandre meant about my husband. Perhaps she can better enlighten you though." Alanna returned her gaze once more to Hakon, all but demanding that the woman explain herself plainly.

Dammit. Dammit. Dammit. Dammit. Uh... Mmm... One more.

God.
Dammit.
(^-me in a nut shell-^)

Hakon could almost feel the waves of hostility flowing off her counterpart, perhaps she should just cut her own tongue out and be on her way. But to be a General one needed to speak. Hmph... Dammit. At the appearance of the duchess, at this point, the wine was hitting her and all she could do was laugh, touching the rather deep and vicious scars upon her shoulders," If any man things the canyons in my skin are remotely attractive then I commend them for being utterly blind," she answers, between sputtering laughs. Resting a hand over her mouth she shook her head and chuckles," The Grand Master will tell you, if I did in fact wrestle with him in the bushes, then I must have done an extremely foul job of it." She was now stifling laughter so much her eyes were nearly tearing up- alas, regaining her composure, she takes a breath, a sip and runs a hand through her hair.

" Truly I need to simply shut my mouth and keep to the field, speaking like this will far more likely the death of me," Flashing an apologetic smile she answers," Your husband; know people are proud of him, that is why they will look upon you with such viciousness." Furrowing her brow at the question of her own marital status, her smile fades before coming back - much more forced. Her stance itself seemed to wither," Once I was engaged to be married but- he was struck down in the line of duty a year ago tonight," she forces her smile to be particularly merry, though it made her mood curdle like old milk," But that is enough of me. I'm obviously here to interrogate the Grand Master-"

As she relaxed, the alcohol shifting through her system at full speed now, she shrugs gently, offering Alanna another apologetic smile,"- and I can tell I've been torturing you quite well. Forgive me, I am used to much... Simpler speech, as you can probably tell." Rolling her shoulders, her mind returned to the frontlines, where her men would be around fires, laughing, drinking, talking shit and all but eating it too. She missed her brothers, but she was a General - associating with them now would be uncouth... But uncouth she would be then, damn the consequences. God- she missed her brothers and sisters in arms, were they alright? How many were left alive? How horrible it would be... To die with the end in sight.

Nope, not enlightened.

Adalia looked between the pair of women. Rivals? A slight squint at them and she pressed the back of her hand against her cheek. It was numb - her cheek - and Adalia stared at her hand for a moment. A quick glance when the talking resumed.

It was unnerving that most people knew she was 'Duchess Draven' or 'Duchess of Highheart,' but she supposed it wasn't an every day - or every decade - thing that nobility from Serendipity got married into a duchy. "Adalia," she said simply, "Just Adalia and," she nodded to Hakon, "I've met a few men in my time who can appreciate scars." She gave a wink and wiggled her gloved fingers in front of herself.

Though, the conversation turned back to dead significant others. A purse of her lips, "At least you two got to choose - Though, Edward is significantly well endowed and he's such a sweetheart. I'm amazed the man survives politic-anything." A sigh and she realized she was talking and looked up, flushed.

"Anyway, My Dears you-" Adalia pointed to the chest of Alanna's armour, "you have baby smudges on your armour," she thoughtlesly removed her glove, licked her thumb and wiped away the smudges with the loose bit of fabric. "Better. Guest of honor should be baby-smudge free, you're welcome." Adalia smiled and rested her hands on her hips. Though if was quite clear then why she wore the gloves.

From finger tip to midarm were burn scars and Adalia was so full of drink she barely noticed her scarred arm was naked.

"Perhaps you should have another drink then," she stated to Hakon with a slight smirk. Alanna decided against saying more. Talk of husbands and husbands-to-be and death was positively not the kind of talk appropriate at a celebratory ball. "Perhaps we should change the subject though. Us bitter women will present a poor example for our newly married Duchess."

The Grand Master looked to the Duchess in unbridled amusement. The endowment of the Duke of Highheart was definitely not something Alanna wanted to know about but it was silly nevertheless. Her amusement did not last long though as Adalia suddenly set upon her person and began cleaning off her armor. Ever the soldier, Alanna tensed in surprise, only relaxing once the woman had stopped and retreated

She had not realized that the young babe had even touched her, let alone left sticky fingerprints everywhere. A twinge of melancholy that she buried under disgust swept through her, making her sigh heavily. "Thank you," she began and nodded her head in thanks, "Duchess Adalia." Alanna was surprised to notice the scars running along the woman's arm but refrained from commenting. Between herself and Hakon they certainly had enough of their own to warrant a form of polite ignorance to them. The Duchess's stories were her own to tell and in a time when she was ready. If she chose to wear gloves to hide them, then she most likely was not ready.

" 'A poor example'?" She chuckles softly, echoing the Grand Master's words," Well- that depends upon if she wants to keep her husband for long or not," she jokes, though rather darkly. Nonetheless, she flashes a smile as she observes and quirks an eyebrow gently at the scene, it was like watching a mother fuss over her child- and in her inebriated state, it was surprisingly heart warming. Taking another small sip of wine, a soft voice in the back of her mind telling her to slow down, she offers a small smile.

" As for your question regarding Mordecai and Adhara, Duchess- Mordecai possess a psionic aura that can negate magic to a particular extent in radius' up to several miles while occurring in both males and females. In retrospects, Adhara's cast a similar field but it is much more powerful and small - it can negate all magics but for divines' and can be anywhere between several feet and a mile as well as only occur and females. It's a strange thing, really," she chortles vaguely, shaking her head," I am unsure if I currently have the cognitive skills to elaborate any more at this moment but if need be I can try,"

Did she want to keep her husband?

"He doesn't seem to hate me for being what i am," Adalia idly commented, "I think I'll keep him." A longing look at a passing glass and... no. This wine was far stronger than any old wine she'd had before. Was it because it was colder up here? They were more hardy so they had to drink more?

"Adalia, please," she insisted again. Duchess. Was that all she was now? Probably. "Just" a Duchess. It felt like rocks attached to her neck and she hated how it weighed her down. Gone were her days of adventuring. Now she wad expected to make little heirs. Adalia looked to Hakon, blinking owlishly.

Then she smiled.

A long look at her hand before she flushed and pulled her gloves on - when had that happened? "I see. Sounds like a curse to me," she flexed her fingers, "though i suppose you would consider me cursed.  Interesting is it not?" A sigh and she smiled to the pair, "I was a mageknight in Serendipity," she said simply, "But I don't think I could imagine being a soldier here." That and she wasn't patriotic in the  least - towards her new home at least.

One last smile at the pair and she reached to Hakon's hair, having not noticed just how light it was, "another easy colour to pick out. I swear. I couldn't find my husband at our wedding reception because everyone here had such plain hair," she gave a grimacing smile to Alanna, "no offence."

He was most excited for this event. Now only did he get a chance to show off his new wife at the appreciation of the Grand Master mordecai's party, but it was the perfect chance for his wife to see Connlaoth's military at it's finest- without every having to step out onto the battle field. Such a bloody business was no place for a fair lady, even though he was still very much naive to how her life had once been lead. Sure, she had spoken of it, but it was something difficult to fully comprehend for a man such as Duke Edward Draven.

On this day he wore the colors of Highheart, brilliant, royal blues mixed with golden accents. He even went so far as to tie his dark blonde hair back in a blue ribbon his daughter Britta had helped fashion for him. He always kept her nearby, even though she was not present at this event (as no child ever was), but she was always in his heart and mind. His daughter was his world and....
He was hoping to create a new love, a new life together with Adalia.

Trouble was, where had she gone? He had hoped to meet her on the dance floor but after a few fumbling dances with others, he realized she was not presently in the ballroom so he tried his luck on the veranda, for he was in much need of a glass of wine.

ANd once one was procured, he took merely a sip of it before he easily spotted Adalia's shimmering, opal colored hair. With the exuberance normally associated with a young lover, he quickly made his way to his wife's side and was all smiles and blushes.

"Ah, there you are. I was hoping to have found you on the dance floor," he told Adalia, before turning his attention to none other than General Kilandre and Alanna Mercer- the newly appointed Grand Master, of all people! His smile could not be erased, and in fact, grew larger as his bow grew deeper.

"My ladies, I hope my wife isn't keeping you too much for herself. But I am quite elated to see you all getting along so well." Little did he know there was a bit of a stiff atmosphere. But Edward was always too sweet to see such things- or maybe even believe them at times.

"But congratulations are in order, Grand  master," he went on, bowing, which was probably excessive at this point, but who was he to care or count? His grin was sincere as he looked at Alanna with starry eyes. "I bet you are quite proud and over the moon for this day."

"And congratulations to you, Duke Draven," Alanna replied, bowing back in turn. "As I was just saying to your wife, may your marriage be a bright and blessed one." She smiled softly, doing her best to contain her amusement as the man Adalia had just been praising for his skills in the bedroom made a grand appearance before them all. "As for myself I can only hope to do our great country proud."

She was careful of her answers as Alanna was not one to brag or toot her own horn. She much rather let her actions speak louder than her words. The issue with that was that in a ballroom unlike on a battlefield there really was nowhere to showcase one's skills. "I hope you can forgive us from stealing your wife away, sir. She has been a...refreshing change to converse with."

The General tilts her head toward the man, the first thing upon her mind was 'squishy'. This man was squishy. Perhaps not in bodily structure but his face instantly drew up flags of naivety and innocence, what an incredible difference between him and the Duke of Vythe. Ah- it was a shame his wife seemed so unhappy while he seemed utterly overjoyed. Ugh- why were relations so incredibly complicated?

Stifling drunken retort, the General tilts her head back, hoping to clear her mind ever so slightly as she hums," Hmm- yes, Congratulations. May you both live past the age of 40 and have a minimum of four children," she chirps idly, though unable to stop her next question, she tilts her head to one side," Though if I may- how did you to come to be married?" She stopped herself before continuing. Having a half-elf duchess was likely an endeavor that displeased the church, as elves were considered magical creatures in and of themselves. Not to mention what the populous likely though- oh dear- well at least she didn't say it aloud, she had had enough verbal slips for one night!

Adalia's lower lip was poking out and she was slowly bringing her hand to her mouth to poke at it, listening idly before a voice made her head jerk and she looked with wide eyes towards... "Edward!" she brightened slightly, flushed and a little wobbly. Like it was a surprise. Who would have thought! Meeting her husband at a ball like this. Adalia moved closer to Edward and curled her arm around his and pressed her cheek to his arm. Her face was warm from drink and she gave the soliders -ladies - a small smile.

Though she smirked, "Only Forty?" She gave a low whistle, "We better start fast if we're going to have four children before you're forty," She nudged Edward in the side and winked at Hakon before she tilted her head at her other question. Self-consciously, Adalia's gloved hand moved up to her head, a finger tracing over the delicate point of her ear that gave note to her less than completely human heritage, before she tried to subtly pull her opal hair to cover some of her ear.

"Ah, it was an arrangement," She said. Why bother lying? They hadn't chosen one another but there were far worse people she could have ended up with - Far worse people Edward could have ended up with. "By marrying me, Highheart has ties to Jadenshine in Serendipity. It was arranged by Grand Duke Calent as a... Way of extending a hand of friendship, I suppose? Poor Edward here was the only eligible bachelor available for such a plan -- Or at least the only one my father was willing to negotiate for." Though she knew it was for coin. Always for coin. Always as a way of gaining more and Adalia and Edward got to suffer for it.

Well, maybe not suffer.

But she knew she made him uncomfortable with her abilities and Adalia looked between the small group, smiling at the two soldiers, missing for just a moment, the ability to choose what she wanted to do. But did these women have a choice? They weren't really women anymore. Not being mordecai and adhara. Adalia tucked her face against Edwards shoulder - Connlaoth was an odd place.

Edward was all smiles, to both the Grand Master and General. But as his drunken wife went on (and it was only as she began to speak and cling to him that he realized just how drunk she truly was), he kept a firm arm wrapped around her to keep her close and blushed on behalf of both.

"That story is mostly true," he admitted, nodding towards the other ladies. "As a Duke, it would be unfit to remain unwed. And with Serendipity being, as well Serendipity is, and as Connlaoth is it's norther neighbor, it was only fit to see some sort of union and well... That is how it mostly began." And that was.. far too awkward of an explanation to roll off of his tongue. He cleared his throat and sipped at his drink, looking down at Adalia and patting her on the shoulder.

"When we are finished conversing here, I'd love to share a dance with you," he spoke softly, soothingly to her before casting a sheepish smile towards the two military women before him.

A dance?

That sobered Adalia some and she tucked a loose piece of hair behind her ear before looking at Edward with a flush. He wanted to dance? With her? The two warrior women were forgotten - little blips on her radar. A quick glance to them, the crackle of angry energy she could taste on her tongue.

"I think we're done," she said simply, moving her hand down his arm to thread their fingers together. A polite nod to the soldiers and she moved away, tugging at Edwards arm impatiently. Finding she quite enjoyed the feel of his hands on her. "Dance with me," she breathed out, cheeks flush from drink, dragging him away from mid-conversation.
