--------------------------------

The sky was red as blood, its color pooling across the glass desert dunes, which warped the reflection and shadows cast down upon him from the roaring beast. It's fangs were hot with blood and drool, it's eyes wild and hungered and it's body, massive with scales and spikes adorning all over its serptentile form. The beast now raised up many stories high, it's shadow seeming to stretch across the entirety of Seraj Isa, while it's thousands of clawed hands reached out for him, clawing and scraping at the glass.

The man backed away, jumping quite a few times to avoid the deadly claws that pierced and screeched into the slippery glass.  The man's mismatching eyes, one red, one blue, stared up at the beast, focusing on the spikey fins running along the beast's spine, which now appeared to have darker, blood red tips as they captured the glow of the fading sun, an image which danced in a thousand relfections splayed across the breath of the glass dunes that surrounded them. It's face had a spray of fanned spiked fins that were open now as the beast's massive jaw roared, teeth snapping down towards the man below. It was angry.  And its aim was to kill.

The man with the mismatching eyes also had a pair of mismatching wings, one being nasty, leathery and black, similar to that of bats, with bulging, blue and red veins lacing along the inside. The other one was soft and beautiful and adorned with pure-white feathers, soft and perfect, like an angel's. It seemed this man was outmatched, even with his oddities. Though the battle had been going on for days, until both the pair had landed in the more secluded region of the Glass Desert where they continued to fight a bitter and unending battle of rage and wit.

By now, most of Jayo's clothing had been torn, blood staining what was left of it and coating well and thick into his hair. His muscles were strained, but he held on fast to his massive, double sided blade, while the demon eye on the darker, more gnarled end of it, peered up at the dragon-like beast. It was then the beast struck down with fury, it' thousands of hands came crashing down upon him. Jayo tried to move fast, hacking off a few limbs, but the beast used all of it's weight, and crushed him down against the glass, cracking the surface beneath it's weight.

But the beast's decision to try to crush Jayo was not without repercussions, as the demonic end of Jayo's blade cut in deep within it's flesh. Hot, bubbling blood began to spill around him, coating his body and dribbling off and collecting into the deep cuts and cracks within the glass beneath his back. His wings were smashed, and might have been broken, so he was thankful when the beast lifted its weight to roar in pain.

This victory was short lived as the beast snatched at him again, squeezing him tight while the blood from it's wound fell down upon the glass like rain. Even now as Jayo pushed the sword in deeper into the beast's belly, he found himself straining as his hand on the hilt nearly disappeared deep into the beast's flesh.

She roared out, angered and surprised that entirety of one end of his blade had pushed into her body. Though she was a large beast, it still hurt like hell, like a thorn in her side and she was losing blood fast. Though the beast had no wings, it took to the air, sailing just above the desert as it's body flowed like the rippling waves of the ocean, it's limbs moving in sequence, except the ten or so that had been latching on tightly to Jayo.

The glass desert moved fast beneath him, peeling away as the beast headed towards the sunset. He knew he had to act fast, lest they keep up this barbaric dance for long. The beast needed to be sedated, or killed, and the glass desert offered the perfect opportunity for it.
Struggling beneath the arms, Jayo yanked his sword free in a few, grunted motions, and held it out with one free hand, while struggling to free his other one. But with his sword free, he simply hacked off the limbs trying to contain him, and soon was plummeting to the ground. His wings snapped out at the last moment as he coasted along the glass floor and landed somewhere in the middle of a massive glass valley.

It was here he felt the prickle of glass beneath him when he landed in a crouch. The glass was delicate here, not hard and unyielding like the parts they had been fighting on before. He took a few cautious steps as he turned around, just as the beast was making a wide turn and heading straight back for him. Now it's massive mouth was open wide, ready to swallow him whole.

But Jayo didn't move. He did not flinch, but remained standing, hands tensing, veins popping as he grabbed onto the hilt of his sword, which was still coated thickly in blood. His wings bristled, and were tense at his back; and soon the beast was nearly upon him- and he braced himself for the inevitable as the massive jaws came clamping down upon him with such a force, the delicate glass shattered beneath.

And there was a ripple effect as the entirety of the thin valley of glass shattered in a wicked explosion of spitting glass, and soon blood, shards of glass and darkness consumed the pair as they tumbled into the world below- a world full of ancient black sands that were several miles below the thin surface of the glass above-

And the last thing Jayo saw was the first glittering lights of twilight as he summoned a great force from within, using all of his powers to melt and recongeal the glass surface above. And from tht power an ocean of liquid sands rushed  upon them, crushing them and encasing both man and beast within.

Now, several miles deep lay the beast in slumber, forever tapped beneath a lid of glass. And just above him- moving forward, staring up, body poised as if reaching, swimming towards the sun... was a man, with ripped clothes, skin showing, blood staining across his face and all over his body with torn hair hiding his red eye, but his blue one remained, soft and placid, staring up as he remained frozen, just a few feet deep within the glass with his wings spread open and beautiful, frozen there for all time.

Though it had been several years, maybe even thousands of years since their battle, Jayo's powers were hardly dormant, and soon a soft, unseen pulse of his powers began to eminent from where he was trapped, an unseen, unheard calling to those of a like kind- Angel, demon or beast.  Before he had been frozen, he had been swimming through the solidifying glass, though he hadn't quite made it, and suffered the consequence the same as the beast several miles beneath him. Though there was a ray of hope, he had seen the sky and had been reaching for it- and now, forever locked within the glass, he would forever see that sky, but would not be able to touch it.

Though he yearned for it, wanted it so badly that his desires were screaming in silence.
Surely someone.. something would hear him.
But even still.. what could anyone do to break such a thick layer of glass?
And even now, as Jayo's powers were beginning to awaken, beginning to seep into the world around him- so was that of the sleeping beast who was disguised and hidden in the dark shadows below.  Jayo was not the only one screaming out in silence for freedom.. for a second chance.

A white sun blazed in a cloudless sky above the glass desert of Seraj Isa, crystalline dunes winking with the iridescence of uncountable shards. The air was cold and thin, misted with a million reflected rainbows. All was silence, and the sound of it was a song out of mortal hearing, a seductive and high-pitched peal emanating from the glass, or perhaps something inside it, that rang out in one long, uninterrupted and discordant hum.

The glass song was broken by a violent explosion of sound, as if the air itself were ripping and tearing. Plummeting from the pale sky was a meteor, its white body surrounded by blue and purple flame, and as it fell it gave off sparks of light like fireworks. Just before it hit the ground, the meteor sprouted a pair of beautiful white wings, and they pushed powerfully against the air, propelling the celestial body mere feet above the glass landscape as it continued to soar at an impossible speed. The tips of its wings dipped low, scraping against the glass and sending up spires of rainbow dust. And then  a dune loomed up in the path of the meteor, and the wings beat at the air but could not gain clearance, and the meteor catapulted into the dune, sending flame and glass flying in a glorious and terrifying display of heat and impact.

On the other side of the dune, a woman tumbled down in a glass avalanche, covered in beautiful wounds: cut and scraped by sharp edges but dusted with fine glittering glass dust. It seemed the woman was in fact the meteor, and she came to rest at the bottom of the dune, her wings displaying a powerful and long wingspan, their glossy and delicate feathers singed from her fall. She was on her back, her white hair wild around her narrow face and glittering with glass and her mouth barely open. She was naked, her descent having burnt away her clothes, and her snow white skin glowed blindingly bright in the unfiltered sunlight. Then the woman opened her eyes, blinking against the light.

"Hello," Lumira called out, her voice clear and bright. "Hello?" She brushed shards of glass from her cheeks."Where am I?" She lifted her head from the ground, glass shards twinkling as they fell and shifted beneath her. She grabbed a handful of glass and looked up at the sky. Then, ever so deliberately, she began to move her legs and arms, making a glass angel in the side of the dune. "Ah," she said happily, "So here I am."

Lumira rose gracefully to her feet, her wings held gingerly behind her. She bent to retrieve a shining sword, half-buried in the glass and pulled it out by its jeweled hilt. She held the weapon at her side, a near natural extension of her arm, and began to walk on, leaving a charred scar of  burnt glass in the side of the duen as testament to her violent fall.

"These are the glass seas of Seraj Isa," she said as she gazed around, finding the same view in every direction.

For a while she wandered, dancing lightly on her feet as she went.

Then a feeling raced along her skin. "I hear music," she said. She ran towards the sound, and fell to her hands and knees in the glass. "What a beautiful rhythm," she gasped, pressing her ear to the ground and closing her eyes. A heartbeat echoed up to her, a steady and relentless ba dump, ba dump, ba dump. It was at once a foreign and familiar beat. "Where have I heard you before?" she whispered. "I think I have dreamed of this tune. What does it say?" She kept her eyes shut, brow crinkling. "What do you want?" she muttered in frustration. Then her eyes flew open, a bright and shining blue. "Oh!"

Lumira rose, and stepped back a few paces. She stretched out her arms and said something in an angelic tongue. Her fingertips began to glow, and soon so did the glass where she had been kneeling. The sound of glass cascading on glass rose to a crescendo as a gaping maw opened in the dunes, laying asunder the first casing of glass and revealing what lay below.

The moment the glass gaped open, the sweetness of the dry desert air flooded him. Life tingled, returning to his limbs as glass and dark sands began to melt away where it had once been entangling around him, holding him back.
Life was reanimated, his heart, which had been beating lightly for some millenia now, was beginning to beat harder and faster, like the steady, strong beats of a war drum; and his eyes, once staring glazed over at the world, broke away from their glassy hold and sparkled again with the exuberance of life.

And where the battle had remained paused for so many years, the crying roar of the beast reminded Jayo that it was to start all over again. Still held within the shattered the remains which were the awakening shards of glass that had once held him captive, Jayo's wings gave a beat. Just a few heavy flaps and suddenly, the demonic- angel was free, breaking through the opening and rising above it's surface.

His shadow shrank and grew with each beating of his wing as he hoovered over the woman against the glass surface, his eyes staring down at her with a wildness for only but a moment, before he spun his blade around within his hands and shot back down into the subterranean world beneath the Seraj Isa.... to where the creature with a thousand legs was roaring with life, snaking it's way towards the surface. The sheer mass of the creature was rattling the very glassy surface in which Lumira was sitting upon, and thus, quaking all of the world around her.

The creatures red eyes glowed angrily, like the molten red lava of a volcano, and the moment it saw the angelic-demon racing down towards him, it halted it's ascent and opened it's massive jaw and swallowed Jayo whole.

Lumira's eyes were closed as she listened to the music grow louder, stronger, more insistent, triumphant even. The world began to tremble and roar around her, a tumultuous cacophony of glass. She felt the brittleness against her skin, and the tremble of the earth as it birthed the secret it must have secreted away for a very long time. And then she felt wind against her face, and opened her eyes to meet with his.

He hovered over her, released, and she saw as she looked briefly into his eyes the time he'd spent in his glass casket and the wild abandonment awarded him by the pure, free air. She did not see a stranger in his eyes, for she knew their stars had crossed once eons ago, as surely as they had been destined to cross now. "I know you," she whispered. "I...knew you." Then he fell back into his glass coffin.

Lumira rose to her feet, still in the midst of a roiling glass sea. She cried out a name, and whispered a benediction to the skies as she saw Jayo consumed by a beast of massive proportion and hideous appearance. She gazed into the tunnel that had been rent into the earth and took in the monstrous being, its many legs and glowing eyes, and raised her sword. A faint, ghostly white glow enveloped its blade as she cried out its title, and then she too plunged into the glass void.

She landed on the beast's head, or what she assumed was its head, and was instantly assayed by its many and reaching clawed legs. "Release him!" she demanded, hacking at the thick, scaled surface, renting legs from body with the sharp and holy blade. "I have not freed him from one prison so that he may be enclosed forever in another!"

The coiled, serpentine body threw her crashing into the side of the cavernous tunnel, and her head and body crushed glass with a crunching sound. Its aim accomplished, the beast was making for the surface. "Oh no you do NOT," Lumira howled. And leaping onto its scaly back, she dug in her sword and held on for dear life as it slithered into the sunlight, returning to the illuminated world in a burst of showering glass.

visualspice

As the terrible creature broke free to the surface world, glass and sunlight glittered like rain all around it as it tossed it's head back and let out a terrible scream- and at that moment something sharp and wicked came tearing out from withint it's throat, and the creature bucked wildly about. But still it came, until finally, Jayo was able to cut his way out from inside the beast's dark belly, and tore open a wound large enough for him to fly out.

The beast roared in pain as Jayo roared with freedom. His wings and body were slick with the creature's internal slime, but as the man was falling towards the earth, he snapped his wings open at the last minute, and flew out of the way as the creature smashed back down onto the glass and sputtered and gushed blood onto everything from it's wounds.

Lumira tumbled gracefully from the beast's back, landing in a shower of pastel blue and pink glass. As the monster was slain, she felt its sickly hot blood splatter across her bare flesh, and for a moment her blue eyes turned as black as pitch. Then, rising, she poured handfuls of glass down her body, and small crystals were left clinging to her skin, creating a dazzling, though spare sheath befitting of a guardian of stars.

"Freedom!" she declared aloud, as she danced around the beast to where the man had landed. "It has the aroma of blood, so often." Steam rose from the beast's rent body into the cooler air. "We have met the stars." Lumira's gaze was turned up to the sky, seeing stars that the daylight hid from others' view. She called out the greeting stars give to each other as they pass by in the night sky to the man, her skin softly glowing.

"My name is Lumira Hav'aniel. I do not believe we have met." She gave the man a close-mouthed smile, and again--just for the briefest moment--her eyes turned as dark and black as a lightless cosmos as she turned her head up to the sky, to check to see if their stars had ever crossed before.

The white hot sun was fading, replacing the skies with the blood red sun of a dying day set across a sky of violet strewn with scattered white, sparkling flecks of stars. It was here he turned to the woman who spoke to him, his shoulders squaring and his eyes set to hers and unyielding, and lips, unmoving.

The dissonant, high-pitched melody began again. Lumira tilted her head, eyes wide with excitement and anticipation. "This is the melody I've followed," she said. "Your heartbeat went wonderfully with it."

She held up her hands, miming a square-shaped object. Her fingertips became shadowed, though she took no notice. "Have you seen a music box?" she asked. "It knocked me from the sky, and has been playing ever since." A phantom of an image appeared between her hands; the music box appeared to her as a delicate object of pearl, but in fact it was made of obsidian, and its stone gleamed with scarlet and crimson. "I'm looking for it." She smiled again. "It has a secret which is my destiny to know."

visualspice

If Jayo could hear the music, he made no indication. He simply stared at her, his red and blue eyes fixated upon her face as a subtle breeze fluttered through his golden hair. His lips were still set hard, in a thin line, then he turned away from her, his wings shifting beneath the weight of the monster's blood that coated them. His wings, which were as mismatching as his eyes, moved to beat a few times before settling against his back side. The pair that was soft, angelic with white feathers, was stained deep red and green from the battle, and had sharp shards of glass protruding from it, creating small rivulets of his own blood that mixed with the drying, dark residue that coated the feathers, keeping them flat and heavy. His other wing, with dark, leathery skin, seemed to fair the same, but had no feathers to be burdened by the the beast's residue.

It was after he shuffled his wings Jayo turned to observe the surface of the glass that had been exposed to the bowels of the Seraj Isa, and he approached the outter rim of the cracks to look down. Deep within, an unseen wind stirred, but nothing more; for within the heart of Seraj Isa lay a desert of black. A desert that rarely saw true light.

A glass sheath had appeared at Lumira's side, in which she slid her sword home. She seemed to dust herself off and glide along in the man's wake, towards the tunnel that had been delved into Seraj Isa. She stood at his side looking down, and cast him an appreciative smile.

With a little twirl, she positioned herself behind him and began removing the glass stuck in his wings, forgetting her own hurts. "I like your wings," she said, as she touched where blood ran from his wounds with a burning, glowing finger to staunch the flow.

"Quite a long way down," she said, leaning precariously over the black depths. She turned her head to the side and closed her eyes for a moment. Another smile. "Shall we?"

At her first touch, Jayo's eyes snapped back towards her, appearing nothing more than glowing colors beneath the shadow's of his hair. And when she continued, he flinched and his gaze became more intense; but then when he felt a power through her fingers, the in tenseness was replaced with a subtle curiosity as he looked back to where the small rivers of blood ceased from his wings.

Lumira laughed aloud, but it was like a child's: it could have been a laugh, but also a sob. "Are you coming?"

She stepped into midair, and plunged headfirst towards the black deserts far below, following her whims as she had often done, though never quite so recklessly as now, with the melody calling to her. But her destiny wouldn't be to die, not yet at least.

At her laughter, the man looked up and watched her disappear beneath the surface of the glass. After a time of staring down after her, he too, allowed himself to drop, becoming swallowed within the world below.
A moment later, he landed in a crouch upon the cool black sands, and after a time, his eyes adjusted to the darkness as he gazed up at the glass ceiling above. It warped the red-wine skies and distorted the stars so they were no longer distinguishable, but became a blend of colors, like a painter's weeping canvas after a rain. And from here, the glass made twinkling, chime like noises as if the fading sunlight made the noises dance. But something else caught his ears as he turned to cast his gaze into a darker pit of black sands, a darkness that seemed to go on into eternity.

Lumira spread her wings to slow her descent, only then realizing how damaged they truly were. Nevertheless, she landed if not like a feather, then still with grace.
She was crouched against the black sand, her breath silvering the air as it left her burning body. She glanced first one way then the other, trying to choose a direction. In the darkness, the light emanating from her skin became all the more apparent. Lumira illuminated the underground world like a torch.

"That way?" she asked the man, following his gaze. She drifted on ahead, lighting the way as she went.

More than anything else, there was barrenness all about them. The black sand seemed to swallow the light she gave off, and her footsteps burned for a moment a bright white on the ground before they too, were consumed. The air was cool, but not refreshing, rather it stole your breath.

For the longest moment, Jayo stared into the darkness. Then he followed, keeping a lot of space between him and the glowing woman. His eyes seemed ignorant towards the small hills of black sands that stretched endlessly around them, and the clumps of glass blobs that remained half buried. No, his eyes were merely focused on the darkness ahead.

It seemed that many hours could have passed, or even days. Eventually a cold but insistent breeze began to blow, stirring up the black sand. Glass, crystalline walls slowly closed in around them, and then ahead loomed a door. As Lumira approached, it answered her light with a fire of incandescence; it was hard and as brilliant as diamond, and its knocker was a small red scorpion placed only a foot or two higher than the average person's head.

She paused here, and said a few words in a cold, hard language. But when nothing happened, she folded herself upon the ground and held her head delicately in her hands, deep in thought.

Jayo had followed her silently the entire time, and when they approached the door, he paused a few feet away to observe it and the walls all around them. It seemed this place was speaking to him, the winds whispering, caressing at his ears. It was perhaps this reason his hands were guided forward as he stepped past Lumira and placed a hand upon the door. A moment later, the scorpion lit up with a wicked red light, and fell off the door, very much alive and wriggling in the black sands.
As soon as the scorpion was free, the grounds began to shake lightly, and the door slid open.
And inside, it was darker than pitch.

Lumira gasped with amazement at the magic of the man's hands, clapping her hands twice as she danced around the wriggling scorpion. The darkness that leeched in from the opened doorway was practically a physical presence, it was so powerful.

Lumira came up behind the man, and stood on tiptoe to look over his shoulder. The music came faintly to her ear, but only for a moment, as if blown to her on the breeze.

"Wonderful," she remarked. "You are absolutely excellent at opening doors. And I have seen many doors opened in my time."

His worn boots was the only sound that could be heard within, but the smells that came within were ancient and wet, a bizarre scent to be captured within the desert. Then again, this was the Seraj Isa- the desert entirely made of glass; so it, within itself, was still vastly different than an ordinary desert. As they pressed onward, the only light that existed was her own, and here, the hallways of stone seemed to be growing more narrow, until they reached a chamber that parted into two directions..
East and West, and each one held a statue before it-
one of a sphinx, the other of a falcon-headed scorpion.

The statue of the falcon-headed scorpion was a pitch dark obsidian; a ruby red light emanated from deep within, a forbidding yet alluring aura. The sphinx was a feminine carving, grandiose and elegant.

"Power. Wisdom. Riddles," Lumira pronounced as she watched the sphinx. She turned to the falcon-headed scorpion. "Hope--to the bound, liberty; and passion, yet death. Or perhaps transition." Lumira clapped her hands, and two orbs of light floated from her fingertips, hovering above the statues. "Once when I was very young, I loved riddles. I was still mortal then. Hm." She smiled sadly. "But now I find them quite tiring." As she walked past the statue to the West, the light returned to her, the only beacon once more.

Beyond the falcon-headed scorpion the stony walls grew even more narrow and soared to a dizzying height, as if they were passing through a vein in the depths of the earth. "I hope you're not claustrophobic," Lumira called back as she slipped through the rock like quicksilver, waif that she was.
