Personality
  • He is Tired™
  • Specifically, he is tired of living in a war zone, tired of doubting his faith, tired of being viewed warily, and tired of feeling frayed all around the edges. Ed feels that he is on the precipice of a major personal crisis, and as a result, he has been more tense, terse, and sharp-tongued than usual.
  • Generally, Ed has done everything he does in life in accordance with Ansgar's faith. He believes in free speech; he believes in hating sin, but loving sinners who repent. He has a great deal of sympathy for people who, like him, struggle to resist temptations inherent to their nature. He has often tried to be there as a mentor and guiding voice for other mages within the church.
  • He has always felt a need to prove himself, especially as a mage in Connlaoth, and this has often lead him to making almost obsequious choices. (Which he has, occasionally, regretted—in an effort to be seen as equal and accepted, he was very willing, in his youth, to act beneath his dignity.)
  • Ed has always been self-deprecating and self-loathing, evidenced by his sense of humor and bitter offhand comments over the years. Others may say he is too hard on himself; he believes that he is not hard enough.
  • Keywords: mixed feelings; internal conflicts; crises of faith; reaching for goodness and falling short; closing your eyes to realizations you're not ready to have
  • Tarot reading: Eight of swords; Judgment; The Hanged Man; Eight of cups
Magic/Abilities
  • Edwidge is the son of a mage, and turned out to be a mage himself. His inherent elemental magic revolves around water.
  • As a brother of the church, Ed will swear up and down that he has not used his magic since childhood, at a time when he was too young to fully comprehend the gravity of how awful it was. Since his teenage years, at least, he has not called upon his power, despite constant temptation to indulge. (It would be fun to plot out whether this is true; perhaps there have been small indulgences on very crucial occasions?)
  • Regardless, Ed fully believes that his magic is something ungodly. He sees the existence of magic within him, and his desire to use it, as a hurdle he will spend the rest of his life overcoming. This contributes at least partially to self-deprecating, self-loathing bitterness. He has wished, on more than one occasion, that his mother had been more devout than to break the law to have him. Ed often feels as though his piety is an attempt to make amends not only for his own existence, but for the transgressions of his parents. However, he also sees his struggle as something sacred, and—though not a great soldier—sees the victories in his own private war as blessings from Ansgar.
  • Content warning: self harm.
    Spoiler
When Ed struggles against using his magic, he burns himself. He does this as a reminder that magic is a force that can only cause pain.

Relationships
  • I will list specific ones
  • when he has them
  • until then:
  • Members of the church; Connlaothians; mages; civil war characters
  • His bio family?
History
  • Content warning: religious forced child adoption.
    Spoiler
As an infant, Ed was taken from his mage parents by the Connlaothian church. When he developed magic, he was not returned to his family, but instead kept. (I am leaving it open to plotting as to whether any of his family might be around, or perhaps searching for him.)
    [close]
  • As he grew up, Ed struggled to control his magic. His early childhood was a sequence of mistakes, repentance, and forgiveness—and, likely, a great deal of disappointment from the religious adults around him, whose approval he strove to attain.
  • When the civil war in Connlaoth started, Ed was already an adult and quite set in his belief that using magic was heresy. It is likely, in these years, that he cooperated with the church. However, as the years have passed, he has begun to question the foundation around which he has built his life. Whether he remains in favor of the status quo or begins to sympathize with rebellion is yet to be seen.
  • (While Ed can't participate in major events that have already happened, I'd love to fill out his history with civil war things that would have affected him directly.)

PLAYER WANTS

What are your favorite kinds of plots and relationships to play?

The most important thing to me, when writing, is that we have a cohesive narrative. That doesn't mean every character relationship needs a massive plot, but we should have some goal or premise in mind when we start a thread together. I like being able to really sink my teeth into something, which means I have a hard time with generic concepts like "they'll meet at a tavern and we'll just see what happens." I'd so much rather have our characters help each other's development in some meaningful way!

I am interested in character relationships of all kinds, but especially best friends and family members. And I love anything organic that surprises us, too. I guess I'll just include a brief list of tropes & relationships I find fun:

- Enemies to friends (to lovers?) (... to enemies again?)
- Only One Bed
- Gender fuckery
- Arranged marriage (especially when they never romantically love each other but instead become best friends)
- Villains Always Do It Better

What are your least favorite kinds of plots and relationships to play?

I'm not super interested in trauma/angst porn? Yes I love trauma & angst, yes I love to explore that realistically, but heaping it on thick can be a little too much.

What are your favorite character types to play?

I love to play outsiders. From total social pariahs to oddball misfits, I love to write an underdog, and love to explore someone who doesn't Completely Fit In with their society, culture, expectations, etc. I do try to make my characters very different from each other, though, and can run the spectrum from "massive bitch" to "wholesome bakery boy." All of my characters will be lgbt, several will be trans, I'd love to dive into some lgbt-centric plots. (Which isn't merely romance, but also about finding community/identity in some of the setting areas where that would be more difficult.)

Are you a planner or a pantser? Do you prefer to pre-plan and stick to a script when posting, or do you prefer to surprise and be surprised?

I'm a mix of both. If we're writing something that's heavy on intrigue, or that's a little unhealthy, or requires content warnings, I want to pre-plan to make sure we're all on board. It's cool to have concept ideas for future threads, and even to have ideas for how we want something to end, but I also want to be open to characters being their organic selves and surprising us.

How do you feel about group threads?

Okay with it, but let's make the posts brief so we can keep it moving.

How often can you reply to any given thread? How long should a partner wait before nudging you for a post?

I keep a list of posts I owe, and I do not post every day. If I announce in the server that I'm completely caught up, and I haven't replied to you, then by all means, yes, please do nudge me. If one month has gone by, you can also nudge me. Otherwise, pleaseeee please please don't nudge.

I have chronic pain & I do a lot of writing outside of RP, so sometimes my brain simply cannot do RP. I may reply to one thread, but not another, and I promise that doesn't mean anything about favoritism. It's all about my energy levels and what I can handle while I have time.

Sometimes I can rapid fire a whole bunch of posts in one day—other times I'm doing one post a month. But I promise I'm fun!

What is the longest you're willing to wait for a reply to a thread?

I'm willing to wait as long as you need. If several months go by (at least 3 or 4, maybe?) without even mentioning the thread, I may ask if you still want to pursue it. (Which is no big deal! Sometimes it just doesn't click.)

How do you feel about instant messenger RP?

Depends on what that means? I can do one liners. I have nothing against them. I do struggle to write in discord DMs, though I suppose I could if it's something quick!

How do you feel about post volleying/rapidfire RP?
(Where you and another player post rapidly back and forth in a thread with each other.)

I can be down for this, but let's try to pre-plan it if possible. This isn't something I always have the energy for, but I definitely have an interest!

What's your preferred posting style? Long posts? Short posts? Anything and everything?

The shorter, the better (although posts should still have something happening and move things along). I can handle the occasional long post as long as it isn't full of exposition & the details in it matter to our plot, characterization, etc. I've found that my word count is generally between 100-250 words. Very rarely do I write more than 300 (though I will when the post requires it). I'm not against one liners, but I promise only to use them when it's really funny.

Any RP styles/habits that you love?

I love a willingness to try new things. Let's write dream threads, surrealist magic stuff, take some risks with our prose, etc. I'm also down for anything that's funny & low stakes. Also let's just write something that makes us both feel super excited???

Any RP styles/habits that you avoid?

I don't bold dialogue. I won't ask you not to, but I don't worry about that kinda stuff, personally.

PLAYER LIMITS

What are you limits regarding powerplay/godmoding?
(For instance, do you mind if someone grabs your character? Picks them up? Punches them?)

It depends upon the situation. If the characters are friends and yours wraps mine in a hug, that's probably fine. If they're fighting and you decide your character's punch landed, that's not going to be so great. I try to use common sense on this one. If in doubt, just ask.

What are your limits in regards to romantic situations?
(What are you comfortable with and not comfortable with? Do you prefer to pre-plot relationships or let them happen organically? Are you open to IC-rejection or love-triangles? Age differences? Etc.)

I don't like to write smut, so let's fade to black. I generally won't agree to romance (past, present, or future) until we've written the characters and we can determine if there's any chemistry there. I'm generally open to most kinds of romance plots, though! And I love when two (or more???) characters organically grow in that direction.

What are your limits with regards to graphic content such as sex, violence, drug use, sexual assault, etc? What is your comfort level?

Let's keep the writing PG-13, use content warnings, and discuss beforehand (and throughout) to make sure we're good. Sex should fade to black; violence can make me a little squeamish if it's Overly Described; drug use is fine; sexual assault is ok with warning, discussion, and as long as it isn't written out in detail. (The difference between writing the scene and two characters discussing an event that happened, for example.)

What are your limits in regards to pregnancy within plots?
(Are you okay with pregnancy in plots? Miscarriages? Loss?)

This has literally never come up for me in the past! I'm okay with all of this, as long as we discuss it.

What about healing?
(For example, a blind character magically being able to see, a scarred up character having their scars repaired, etc.)

I generally don't like this. If I make a disabled character, I'd like them to stay disabled. Healing for life-threatening wounds is one thing, but completely negating a facet of a disabled character's identity with a spell is a little much for me.

What about characters being transformed against their will? (Think vampires, werewolves, and magical spells.)

Discuss it with me beforehand.

Anything else?
(Anything else you want to add that other players should know!)

I'm very laidback, very funny, and if our characters end up having plots together I'll undoubtedly draw you little cartoons & offer playlists. I love forging friendships through RP, and love to talk headcanons, even if I'm not actively posting. I'll always send you memes that remind me of our characters. Please feel free to reciprocate. <3
