"Well it looks fabulous on you, Harmanaija," Anran said, turning to look at her.  "It really brings out your features.  Especially your eyes."  He was smiling, as if he didn't even notice the mark on her face and he quickly moved over to get a mirror so that she could see for herself.

Harmanaija hope she wasn't flushing, but when the mirror was brought to her, she saw it on her face- then the mark- the mark that was so prominent and hastily, she began to paw at her hair, dragging pieces to cover over it.
"Oh.. it.. it seems too much, too much was pulled up I-" But in her hastiness, the rest of her hair began to fall out as she softly gasped and peered at herself wtih a frown.
"Oh! I hadn't mean to pull it all out I just- The mark.. it... I'd like to hide it."
And that confession heated her cheeks shamefully as she dropped her gaze.
"Perhaps.. we can pull just.. part of it up?" Though she felt lame for asking.

Anran patted her shoulder.  "Don't worry, I get it.  Just part of the hair it is.  The back then."  He smiled and took down his work, working the back of her haie anew.  "I won't let you go out there looking like a fool, you're in safe hands."

She released a held breath and nodded, keeping her gaze down cast until he was finished. Then she turned to him.
"Thank you. I don't know how I can repay you. You've been far too kind to me and I just feel as if I now owe you something for all this help. Really, you have no idea how it is I... I really don't have anyone I can count on. No friends to turn to. It's just always been me these past few years."
And things had been very rough indeed.

"Oh, but look at me, prattling on. I know you've had your fair share of hard times too." And she gazed at him curiously. "How was it like. Being a slave, I mean... If.. if you don't mind me asking. But oh, isn't that awfully rude of me." ANd she took his hand and squeezed it. "Please dn't answer if you don't wish. I.. I hadn't meant to pry!"

Anran chewed on his lip for a moment, looking at her in the eyes.  "It's no big deal, really.  I'm happy to lend a hand now and again.  I think it's easy to ignore the troubles of others especially since everyone's got their own problems."  He shrugged.  At her other question however, he stiffened and patted her hand.  "It was as you'd probably expect," he said, turning his eyes away.  "But..uh, I was luckier than most.  And I always count my blessings."

"Yes, I suppose you're right. But I too, consider myself fortunate. After all,  I could be penniless or dead on the street. Though most jobs I can procure are not glorius by any means, I still feel fortunate to have them. But I don't need much to be happy. So long as I can get by and have a place of my own, that's all I need."

He laughed and squeezed her hand in his own.  "I think I can  honestly say it wasn't.  When I was a boy, I was being raised to be a house slave, to maintain the household, obey orders, serve guests.  You must understand that that kind of servitude is considered very high for a slave.  If you have a decent master, you are given your own quarters, taught to speak well, carry yourself with some semblance of dignity, given fine dress.  You see because you are a possession of your master, you are in a sense an extension of him or herself, and carry with you the dignity of his house and his name.  If you have a decent master that is...."

He dropped his eyes.  "I...had a cruel mistress.  I would not break so she sold me to the Colosseum and there I fought.  As I'm sure you can imagine."

She took his hand, squeezing it and looked up into his eyes.
"I'm so sorry.to hear that, Anran. I can only imagine what it was like. It must have been terrible." She squeezed his hand again and moved her other hand, resting it on his shoulder.
"But clearly Hakeshna knew your heart was good and sparred you from such a life. It is nice to hear a good story in ourlife time. Like a real fairy tale. I just hope Hakeshna will continue to shine on you and this life."

With a nod, the pair strolled off, though she was surprised to realize she'd have to be accompanied on Anran's arm. She hadn't realized the protocol, and even though they were not married, or not courting or anything of the likes, they were both unwed and single relations who accompany the other, it was always protocol to move about, arm in arm.  So as she moved with Anran through the sea of guests that gathered along the Niafi River bank for the first feast of many, she found herself shrinking closer to Anran as her face began to garner them many nasty looks. It was only after she began to hear some of the whispers did she turn to Anran shamefully and whispered, "Perhaps I should not have come. I do not wish to mar your reputation by being escorted by you."

To say Lord  Ahb-meht was surprised was an understatement, and his prized wife Marra nearly spilled her drink. The gasping from her throat could be heard all around, only drawing more attention to her, then to where her eyes were looking.

But Harmanaija turned away from it, tried to tune it out and walked closer to Anran, keeping her chin held high.
"You don't have to say anything funny!" she said with a bit of a forced laugh. "The looks on their faces was enough to make this all worth it."

"You and me both.  I could only have imagined this in my wildest of dreams," he admitted just between the two of them.  He gave a soft chuckle, taking a sip of his water and leaning back in his chair.  "I...er, no.  Not always.  But I am in a good mood today.  We are in the presence of royalty after all."  And suddenly the entire set of guests at one table stood and bowed their heads as armed guards came through the grand tent.

Haramnaija felt her heart leap into her throat. Her stomach was doing somersaults and her palms were growing clammy. She could not believe this, the Shah just entered the great tent! She didn't fully know what to expect, but to see her in all of her glory was awe inspiring and also made Harmanaija feel even more insignificant than she already was.

It was hard not to be taken by the Shah's beauty.  Anran had only a glance at her from where he was.  And after he bowed and gave reverence, her entourage was past and the Princes were allowed to be seated again after they had taken their place at the head table. 

"Some say she is Hakeshna reborn," Anran murmured into her ear.  "But no one can say for sure what Hakeshna looked like. She could've had bucked teeth for all we know."
