Today was not Caldia's day. She had spent the day as usual, stealing from various shops in order to make ends meet. It had all gone alright so far, she had managed to obtain food and some replacement clothes and even some money from a rather careless rich noble who was walking by (seriously those guys should keep a better watch on their wallets). And all of a sudden, on the way back home, some of the guards recognized her from one of the raids on one of the mage hideouts in the catacombs. Seriously as if there weren't enough of them running around and her face was the one they remembered.
Anyway, those guards sounded the alarm and before she knew it she had a good twelve guards chasing after her, far too many for her to handle despite the fact that she had her sword on her today.
Well luckily she had managed to lose them somehow and was back in the Catacombs. Now she just needed to find out where she was.
Suddenly Caldia heard footsteps off in the distance. Not wanting to come face to face with anyone just yet, she quickly looked around for a place to hide. Bad news was not all clans in the catacombs were friendly and not all were known to her, so best to keep out of the way in-case they turned out to be a threat. Spotting a nice secluded alcove, she dived into it, becoming unobservable to the regular passerby. She just hoped they wouldn't spot her.

Lucky!

A boy, barely a man grinned. He was in luck today. While he had disobeyed his mother before, this was something that had rarely come up before. The army had wanted to use his tactical thinking, his smarts, and his mother had agreed. Well, she had indirectly. Close enough. Today, he was going undercover into the Catacombs. He would distract the lord of that area of the Catacomb and the army would storm the area. One thing he tried not to think about was the magic users down there that were not bad. If there were any, he would help them out, but he doubted anyone down there would get his sympathy.

The plan was simple. He would go down as a disguised magic user and challenge the leader, who happens to be a chess fanatic to a game. Courtesy of a spy that they had down there. Ealius had no doubt that he could beat the leader. No one had ever beaten him, not since he had reached the age of twelve. This was good. He got to do what he liked to do, and he might be able to get more of his freedom back from his mother. Servents whirled around him, dressing him oddly. No, not oddly, just different. Soon he was off with but one man that would serve as his bodyguard.

He headed into the Catacombs, a few guards watched closely as they entered, in case there was an ambush by the entrance. There was none, luckily. Ealius strolled deeper into the heart of enemy territory. So many different pathways. It was a good thing that he had a really good memory. Eal glanced at each one, and remembered the slightly different paths, in case he would ever need to run. They were pretty deep into the Catacombs now. Strangely, he noticed a few guards running around, as if they were looking for someone, but they ignored Eal and his guard.

At first it was nothing, just a shadow at the edge of his vision. But he looked again. It was a young woman. Strange. She looked as if she were hiding. He implanted her into his head before continuing. No delays, everything needed to be according to the plan. If not, this could get dangerous fast.

Caldia slowly got out of her hiding spot. She could see the faint outline of the young boy and the slightly more bulky man walking into the distance. Strange, they seemed slightly out of place here in the catacombs. She knew most people here or could usually tell where abouts they were from by their looks. But the two who just passed had no resemblance to anyone she could think of. Also the boy seemed to walk more... gracefully. A small thing, maybe she imagined it.
The one moment that really scared her was when he turned and seemed to stare RIGHT AT HER!! But he turned away so she was certain he hadn't seen her. After all she was a master hider.
Now back to the matter at hand, Caldia needed to find out where she was. A quick look around and she realised with a shock exactly where she was. This was the area where local thieves, bandits and the more extreme magic users lived. It was a place she usually avoided at all costs. The people here were bad news and she wanted nothing to do with them. But the two who just passed where headed straight to the center. Why?? Curiosity got the better of Caldia. She knew what she was doing was dangerous and reckless... but that was why she was doing it. Checking that her sword and throwing knives were in easy reach (If those guys or the locals attacked her she wanted to defend herself) she hurried after the pair, sticking to the shadows to stay unnoticed.

The shouting could be heard now. Laughter, screams, more laughter, glass shattering, things tumbling down to the ground. It was still a bit off in the distance, but he knew what was coming. Ealius paused for a a fraction of a second, so small that no one would have noticed. He had felt a shift of air behind him. Someone was following them. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a tiny piece of mirror and used his mind to make it float. It correctly positioned it in a place where no one, no matter how skilled, could see it. Glancing upwards without tilting his head, he looked into the mirror to see the reflection of the woman earlier. She was a talented one to stay at the shadows, but he had a sharp eye, and he knew. Nodding to himself, he brought the mirror back to him and put it away.

The laughter and noise was a lot louder now. A light in the near distance told him that he was almost there. The bodyguard was closer to him now. To make sure that he was okay. When they reached the entrance, Eal saw what he had heard. A lot of men a few women making a hell of a lot of noise. Then slowly, it grew quite, as all eyes turned to look at Ealius and his bodyguard. Ealius held a hand. "Where is your leader?" he said, calmly and loudly. "I have come to challenge him to a game of chess!"

There was a loud uproar. Then one man stood and everyone else became quite again. "You wish to play me?" the man said. "The undefeatable one?"

Eaius grinned. "Why not? It's not like you are the only one who is undefeated in your area."

"I see, then come on up!" The leader said, grinning.

The young man walked up the stairs, followed by his bodyguard and say in front of the leader who had a few people get a chess set. Setting it up quickly, Eal spoke. "I have a deal to make with you."

"Oh? And what might that be?"

"If I win, I get control of this area." Ealius said. The leader pondered this. "And if I win?" Ealius shrugged. "Isn't it obvious? I'll pay you fifty thousand gold." He paused. "And if you try to keep me here if you lose, then you will never get your money even if you ransom." The man grinned. "It's a deal." Ealius shook the man's hand. "Let's play."

Drawing up to the entrance, Caldia paused. It was one thing to satisfy her curiosity but the people here where very dangerous. She's visited them once before when she was younger and more naive (and more desperate for money). She was lucky to escape with her life. Entering now would be foolishness.
But then again, when she last entered she was younger, less skilled, less sneaky. Maybe this time it wouldn't be so bad. No, This time she would be careful and not be so careless as last time.
Still keeping to the shadows, Caldia silently continued following the two strangers. While following them, she noticed that the area was as busy as ever. Many men and women, many were armed. Not good news for her if she got caught. But what was worse was the opening the young man gave when he entered the headquarters.
"Where is your leader?" he had said, calmly and loudly. "I have come to challenge him to a game of chess!"
Was this man asking to get himself killed. Why would the lord of this area, a skilled warrior, a leader of ferocious bandits accept the offer of a random stranger to duel in a game of chess. It was absurd. In the sudden uproar Caldia half expected the pair to be cut down but a sudden hush descended as one man stood up. He was obviously the leader, Cadlia recognized him from all those years ago. He had taken the longest to lose in her escape.
And to her surprise it also turned out he was a chess fanatic. He soon agreed to a game that he appeared confident he could win. And they also seemed to have made a bet about power and money. Caldia could never understand how these people thought.
Well since she was here she might as well she how this story unfolded. It was interesting enough to be sure. While the crowd was distracted, she quietly moved into a area of the room which had barrels of ale lying around. Hiding behind these she had the perfect view of the game and was well hidden so no one would see her unless they came too close to the barrels. In which case she would have to deal with them, though she hoped it wouldn't come to that.

Chess. The game of Kings. It was perhaps a game into people's minds as well. If they played the game right. Ealius was cautious not to overstep his boundaries; one false move could do worse then have him dead on the floor. As soon as he entered the building, he had a perfect memory of it. Where everyone grouped, everything. Not that he needed to know it, but he did anyways. The guards were going to come in the same entrance as he had, which meant that the young woman that he had seen when he had first entered was going to get caught first.

He caught her gaze for but a millisecond, but in that time, he mouthed the words, entrance will not be safe, move as far away as you can. Eal was fast, no matter who was able to read lips, how he hoped that the young woman could, no one would be able to decipher to true meaning of what he meant. Turning back to his opponent, three moves were made in an instant. Strange was how the man played. He did not use conventional methods, but nonetheless, they were effective. A few minutes into the game, Ealius decided that this man, this leader was an extremely good chess player. Time to get a bit serious, he did after all have to make sure that this game lasted long enough for the guards to get here.

It took almost half an hour to complete the entire game. Ealius had revealed the truth behind his chess skill, pushing the bandit king back with ease or at least with ease to anyone watching. The only one to know that it was a heated battle was Ealius and the leader. The bandit leader chucked. "You are quite the player." He tipped over his king. "I lose."

At that moment, Ealius heard it. The guards were here. "Yes, yes you have." And he vanished from few just as the guards stormed in.
