The giant beast appeared to be gaining on her, but just as he did so, he heard a remark and paused. Slow was he was, he managed to turn around, seeking from where the voice came.

Finally having a reprieve, Pao stumbled against a nearby boulder to catch her breath, and noticed with some curiosity, that the creature seemed to have stop moving. But she hadn't heard Enzo's shout, so she hadn't a clue as to what was going on as her heavy chest heaved with each labored breath.

The Never King- a king erased from history because of his dabblings in dark magic (among other things...) suddenly because a present day problem when an unlikely group of adventurers 'awakens' him from the grave. The creature pulled its weapon up and launched it down toward Pao.  Something small and quick leapt up onto its back, however.  Enzo screamed and held fast to the vines that grew upon its hide.  With is free hand he plunged the point of Angra'arda into its shoulder.  Liquid shadow poured from its wound, spraying up and out.

Pao'orha looked on in frozen terror at the scene unfolding above her. With a hand poised over her head like a shield, she saw everything from the near death blow that had been diverted from her, to the sudden gush of black shooting out from the beast. She moved to mark across her breast, muttering in saranthian a protection blessing before daring to move closer.

"Enzo! HA-TAH-LEE! DO NOT LET THE DARKNESS TOUCH YOU!"
For just looking at the stuff made even this strong, stubborn woman feel a sense of dread sinking icily into her bones.

Enzo avoided the splash of one blast of creeping darkness.  He pulled himself up over the monster, continuing to stab it where his blade penetrated.  The creature howled with agony, trying to reach up for the one that made him bleed so.  It shook violently.

Enzo held true, though a slip made his leg get caught in the blast.  He growled, howling just a bit at the pain upon contact.  It felt as if his leg were plunged in a vat of icy water.

Enzo kept hold of his grip on the creature, hoisting himself up, until he jabbed his sword into the back of the creature's neck.  It stopped short, wavering and found itself falling onto its knees.  Enzo slipped then, sliding off the back of the creature, and tumbling down to the floor, where he remained inert.

NUmbly she ran, scooping up her hero while muttering a slew of words. The darkness clinging to him made her blanch, but she felt she had dealt with worse- even though this was something that made feelings beyond her blood, curdle. But she knew fate rested in this man, and were hope to be snuffed out so soon......

Would this wicked blackness consume more than just these beasts?

Dragging Enzo aside, while the creature collapsed and fought to breath, she took homage beneath the shadows and cradled Enzo close. He felt so cold, and though she muttered so many prayers- she knew not if they'd be in vain.

But the next time she closed her eyes and opened them-
she felt heavy- like lead, and could smell the salt of the sea.

Sitting up with a start, she looked around to realize- she was back in Canador! And though she had returned home, Enzo, she noted- was no where to be seen.

Not seen immediately at any rate.  Instead of being in her lap, he was sprawled along the bed of furs and pillows that comprised her chambers.  His breathing was soft, light, and shallow.  He was sweating, and his side.had a dark gash on the side of it. It was bruised all around, but not bleeding.  His leg mimicked this color and condition.

He said nothing, but groaned as he moved, his body aching all over.  When he opened his eyes, he blinked at Pao, and smiled briefly.

She was afraid something was wrong, but upon seeing his smile, she gave a light smack to his shoulder.
"Ha-eeeesh! You had me worried, but there you go, waking up, and that smile," she wagged her finger at him, pointing accusingly. "You know I thought you might have died!" And it seemed she was almost angry enough to spit on him.

The Never King- a king erased from history because of his dabblings in dark magic (among other things...) suddenly because a present day problem when an unlikely group of adventurers 'awakens' him from the grave. Sustenance sounded just like what they both needed.  Enzo moved a bit to sit up, but even that much effort made him grunt with frustration.  He didn't like the thought of being an.invalid.  And be was quite sure Pao didn't want him to be either.
