The first dance, was naturally orchestrated by the Grand Duke and Duchess themselves- a dance where they would start it off, then all the pairs of lords and ladies would fall into line soon after them during the second verse of the song. The visor, Vesirk Delcheux, had made the announcement that this was to begin soon, and the ballroom doors were opened- finally ready for the guests to come in!

The band had already taken it's seat, and was playing a soft song of welcoming for those entering, and as the guests filed in, The Grand Duke himself remained in the center, beneath the grand chandelier as it made the floors beneath his boots sparkle. With his wife at his side, the two remained as still as statues, only watching as the other lords, ladies and dukes filed in and began to pair up for the first song.

Entrance from Spumoni, Strudel, and Sweet Potato Pie

Leaving his family to their fates in the other room, Trevian stepped into the ballroom.  There weren't many dancing couples yet, but, as the night dragged on, there certainly would be...and, with any luck, Trevian would be among them.

Assuming he ever found his wayward sister.  Really, how did a girl taller than all of Connlaoth just vanish into thin air?  Maybe she was curled up sick in a corner somewhere...  That would, certainly, keep her out of trouble...and it might even teach her a lesson, besides.

In any case, she obviously wasn't here.  Trevian turned to go, surprised to find him face-to-face once again with a certain ice queen.  Immediately, he smiled broadly and bowed, easily slipping into his role from earlier...even if the white and red tabard he had been wearing had vanished.

"Ah, my mysterious queen!  I am surprised you haven't a dozen men at your heels begging for a dance!"

There was no reason not to be polite!

Upon entering the ballroom, Lord Edward was a bit pink skinned and sweating beneath his costume, and also, it was a bit disheveled as he tried to slick back his hair.
"I think my feathers are falling out.." he commented softly, stepping into the room and scanning the crowd. He frowned a bit. "I.. I don't think I see your mother... do you?" And as he looked about , he worked at fixing the color of his blue-bird suit, then the mask.

"Yes, they are," Riley agreed, picking up a blue feather from the floor of the dance hall. Edward wasn't the only one out of breath, though. It had been much more work for Riley to keep up on the rush from the observation tower to the ballroom than it had been for Edward! Of course, Riley probably looked cuter with rosy cheeks than Edward did.

He frowned at Edward's observation and also looked around the large room, still catching his breath. Riley really was not doing a good job as his mother's escort at this ball! But at least if she wasn't here then she probably hadn't been captured by a horrible dance. What if while Riley was gone she'd been approached by some other man? And was going to be his dance partner? That wouldn't do! That wouldn't do at all... In fact, Riley found that he was feeling just as responsible for looking after Edward's night as he was for his mother's.

And he was doing much better with Edward.

"Do you think I should I go look for her, do you think?" he asked uncertainly, still looking around the room in hopes of spotting Dahlia.

Brisinger987

Janette slipped into the dance room, her mind still reeling over that knight. Killian. He was the sort of guy she could settle down with. Maybe.  It didn't matter now. She had slipped into the ballroom, having had yet more to drink, and completely forgotten her ability to recognise anyone.

Anything that didn't clearly have breasts now became fair and equal game. The most instinctive part of her brain made sure she didn't go near the Grand Duke because of her lie to Killian. If she was near the Grand Duke, and Killian went and investigated if the Grand Duke had a niece, and the Grand Duke was asked if he did, she would be spotted by Killian in an instant.

As Janette walked by Riley she heard his voice and actually did recognise it. But she couldn't put a name to it. Instead she decided to dance. She was still perfectly coherent in her walking, but her intoxication became apparent in the misty look in her eyes, and her lack of fine-fine motor control.

And her brain decided that Riley was perfectly acceptable to dance with.

So instead of asking, it reverted to her favourite activity. Stealing.

She stole the young boy's hand, and remembered a few rules. No dancing before the Grand Duke and his wife danced.

"Care for a dance young master?"

Riley had to resist the urge to hide when his aunt Janette approached.

"Oh no..." he muttered. If he wanted Edward to like his family, Janette was not who he wanted to show up! He fidgeted, trying to decide what to do, and whether or not he should tell Edward to run. He didn't get the chance, though, before Janette had grabbed his hand. Oh boy, she was drunk, too. Janette was bad enough sober! Riley's unfiltered response was to recoil, but he didn't snatch his hand away from his aunt.

Before he could panic, though, he spotted Trevian on the other side o the ballroom. Thank goodness. Riley shot Edward a look that said 'Oh brother!' before turning very politely to his aunt.

"You don't want to dance with me, Janette, I'm far too short!" he told her brightly. "And more importantly, there was a very handsome - and much taller - gentleman looking for someone just like you! I'll take you to him."

So Riley tugged gently on Janette's hand, leading her away from Edward and across the ballroom. "I'll be back soon... I hope," he said quietly to Edward before taking off.

He at least had the good sense not to walk directly to Trevian, in case Janette somehow caught onto their direction. Instead, he took the long way around the ballroom, coming up on Trevian from behind. Clearing his throat, he tapped Trevian on the back.

"Here, look what I found."

Few couples were already standing on the dancefloor when Valentina entered the room. She mostly cleared the tears from her eyes and hoped that the signs of crying were invisible on her face. Running away from her husband perhaps wasn't he most mature decision ever, but Valentina knew that she wasn't ready to deal with the truth, or better say, lies at the time.

The music that was played was oddly out of tune with her feelings. Too cheery, too vibrant and too light. While walking around the ballroom she once again met a familiar face. Perhaps that was all that was needed for her to set her miserable mood into a better state?

"I'm afraid other men couldn't deal with the coldness as well as you did." she smiled charmingly, trying to forget what just happened outside. Although she was ready to flirt a bit more, her head was still stuck in the mess she heard earlier. The pain was making her feel numb to other feelings.

As Edward was left to his own devises, he gave one sympathetic look to Riley before deciding it might be best to hang back as a wall flower. After all, he hadn't been properly introduced to Riley's mother- nor saw sight of the red-bird beauty in costume anywhere. Sighing, he helped himself to a glass of champagne as a servant passed by and allowed his brown eyes to roam the crowd...

It was about this time Lord Davishire was dragged in by Lord Carwick, (which would have been quite the sight to see!). He had to step quickly, lest it appear as if he were actually being dragged, and sighed irritably the moment they settled onto the edge of the dance floor.
It was only here, as others began to look at them, and their eyes going to Davishire's stain that he began to feel embarrassed for it,but sheepishly so, for remembering the wine stain Jillian had given him had reminded him of Jillian herself as his eyes idly scouted the room for her.
"I don't see her.." Davishire muttered after a while. "What if I've upset her enough that she avoids the dance floor?" Angsar knew he wanted to!

((Klei's shortest post ever! Maybe! Not sure!))

Avery dusted himself off after releasing Davishire from his coaxed walk into the ballroom. Davishire fretted about Jillian's absence from the room and Avery rolled his eyes while he wasn't looking. "Oh, don't flatter yourself, Davishire. I'm sure she'll be here. Ladies love to dance, and it's expected to dance when you come to a ball. Let's wait two minutes before panicking, shall we?"

Brisinger987

Janette eagerly followed Riley, desperate to meet the image in her mind of some gorgeous hunk with big stro- Nope, the image didn't happen, but she saw the blurred outline of what looked like an attractive man in a costume. She could have sworn that costume was familiar.

No, it wasn't family.

"Hello handsome... Might you grace a lady with a name so that I don't have to keep describing you?" Janette's eyes were misty and the wine clear on her breath. Trevian would know she'd gotten into trouble.

"Of course, not that I could imagine it would be a bad thing..."

Although Valentina did fairly well in drying her tears, a little redness remained, lending some truth to her words in spite of her beautiful smile.  Beyond her, Trevian glimpsed his sister's arrival and was relieved to see Riley had managed to wrangle her for the time being.

After all, there was a woman in need of a dance partner in front of him, and it would have been a terrible insult to her to leave her in this condition.

His charming smile returned in full force as he extended a hand in offering to her.  "It is to my benefit, then."  Once she had accepted his hand, he stepped nearer to her to add in a quiet voice meant for her ears alone, "I have heard a rumor that any other knights wishing to dance with Your Majesty would be challenged by the Jack of Hearts for the privilege..."

ADD:
Trevian didn't even notice his nephew or sister; his attentions were solely on Valentina.

Riley gaped at his uncle's back. Sometimes, and this was one of them, he just couldn't believe his mother's family. How did his in-his-eyes-perfect mother come from this troublesome bunch? Trevian might think he was busy, but so was Riley!

He cleared his throat again, but louder - or tried to, the effect was rather staged - and tugged hard on Trevian's costume. "Trevian," he protested loudly, "I'm only ten years old! You can't leave her with me!"

What did Trevian expect him to do with her, anyway? Janette was more than twice his size and she wasn't even making sense anymore! He'd thought she wasn't so bad when she'd asked him to dance, but Riley didn't understand a word of what she'd just said to Trevian!

The boy glared, then brought out the biggest gun he could think of.

"I'll tell Grandmother!"

Edward, remaining an awkward wall flower, wasn't ignorant enough not to notice the trouble the poor child was having with his Aunt. Realizing the poor boy might be stuck in a precarious situation, he hesitated a moment before crossing the room and approaching the pair.

"Riley, I do believe, being so young, that perhaps it would be wise that an older gentleman invite your Aunt for the first dance? I'm sure she would not mind allowing you the second one.." And he gave Riley a sympathetic smile before he turned sweetly to Janette, who, despite being taller than himself, seemed to unphase him as he took Janette's hand and kissed the top of it lightly.

"That is to say, my lady, if you do not mind joining me for this first dance?"

"Ooooh, such a gentleman... Mmmmm, of course I will..." If she could've shapeshifted, her eyes would have turned into that of a reptile's, eyeing up Edward as her new prey. The man was handsome, well, what she could see with the mask on.

She let the name Riley stick into her head, an realised that she had asked her nephew for a dance.

"I'll come back for a dance later Riley, ok sweetheart?" Her tone was more that of a caring aunt now that she recognised the boy. She had always liked Riley. She'd never quite known why, but she always had. So of course, stealing a dance with her nephew was only a bit of fun. If he didn't know how to dance, she could teach him. If she could remember how.

She let the gentleman take her to the dancefloor.

"Might I ask a name of you sir? Or are you going to be a mystery?"

Ivory

That time, Trevian heard his nephew -- probably because his name had been used.  He half-turned, his surprise apparent, as he looked over the pair...and exhaled softly in relief when Edward stepped in to intercede on his behalf.

They had been young together, after all -- and Edward had always been a good wing-man.  Trev had repaid the favor, too, although he owed him again after this, it seemed!

"Excuse me for just one moment, my queen," he added to the woman with a long-suffering expression.  "Family.  You know how they can be."

To Riley, he explained patiently, with a cheerful glitter in his eye, "To have a dance accepted by a lovely woman is the highest honor a man can hope to achieve, and to refuse a dance is the gravest insult a man can inflict.  Now, I am a gentleman, and a gentleman never wounds a lady, so I will deal with Janette later.  Alright?"

Thank Angsar for Edward!

Entrance from A 'Sundae' Afternoon

- - - - - - - - - -

It was with an uncertain tread that Oscar entered the ballroom, resplendent and mildly uncomfortable in a replacement costume, lion mask back in place to hide his rather strained expression. There was a crowd already within: a few couples on the dance floor already and a greater number gathered around the edges, which granted his entrance a little anonymity. After the drama of the evening so far and the sobbing lady he'd been forced to leave behind, he was glad for the moment of peace. He couldn't see his siblings from the door he entered, and for the moment made no effort to seek them out, instead edging around to hover by the wall, eager for a little quiet time. It didn't happen, as it turned out. Some of the players from the evenings farce had migrated in here, and Narwhal, Weasel-Cat and a new woman who was either a badger or an ill-prepared magpie descended on him.

"Oh, my dear boy, was she alright?"

"What happened in there?"

"So good to see you've come through unscathed! And what lovely new clothes!"

By Angsar's Grace, he wasn't ready to put up with this. Fixing a smile on his face, he fielded their probing questions as best he could without actually saying anything, excusing himself as quickly and politely as possible to move away through the milling guests. On another occasion, their disappointed tuts would have made him even more nervous, but middle-aged women fishing for gossip was not something he could bear twice in one evening. Not yet, anyway.

Maybe a glass of champagne would help, he thought, dodging around a woman with what looked to be a dozen lilies on her head, then maybe he could watch the dancing in peace. He did so like to watch them dancing.

kleineklementine

All of the color drained out of Riley's face when Edward approached Janette and the boy looked on in utter horror. This was not what was supposed to happen! Riley liked Edward, and he wanted Edward to like him (and maybe his mother) and, if Janette had anything to do with it, there was no chance of that for long!

The boy wheeled around on Trevian, completely furious with his uncle. He didn't even hear Trevian's suave excuses. "I'm really mad at you, Trevian! You're supposed to be the adult!" he crowed in a childish outburst. Then in an extra-childish outburst, he kicked his uncle as hard as he could in the ankle and thundered off. He would probably be embarrassed by these actions later (especially if his mother found out about them!), but for now he was too upset to care.

Fuming, Riley stomped off the the edge of the ballroom. Oh, he would get Trevian back for this, just wait! (Maybe he was more of a Treyburn than he liked to admit!) Then he saw Oscar on his hunt for a glass of champagne, so he stomped over to him. After all, he wasn't meant to stay on his own, and Oscar was the closest family who he wasn't furious with or afraid of.

When he got to Oscar, he didn't say anything, just stood dutifully next to him, crossed his arms, and seethed.

Yes, Valentina needed a knight right now, a protector. It didn't matter if it was a person she knew just from a short conversation. All that mattered for her was that there was someone she could rely upon in this miserable moments. A stranger would've been welcome too! Anything that would serve as a distraction.

She glanced over the ballroom in hope her husband didn't follow her in. She was far from ready to have a conversation with him. With one more deep breath she decided that it didn't matter. Nothing really mattered in their pretense marriage. It was just a pretense.

Valentina remembered where she was and she moved the grim expression from her face. On it's place there was now again one of her ever-present smiles.

"And I wondered where all my suitors are?" she joked "My knight must have scared them away." Valentina said with a teasing smile.

Everyone was just out to ruin this ball for him, weren't they?  Trev shook his head at his retreating nephew, then turned back to the lovely lady Valentina.

"Sweet lady, for a glimpse of that smile," he caressed her cheek with a fingertip, sliding his hand gently down to the point of her chin, then lifted his hand to touch her lightly upon the nose.  "There is nobody, villain or hero, that I would not face.  If your other suitors are too cowardly to face me, perhaps this is a dragon or kraken about upon which I might prove myself worthy of this dance?"

Of course, there was no such thing...  Still, he made a show of glancing about.

"No.  Then, perhaps, in a show of mercy, you might take me as I am?"

"No.  Then, perhaps, in a show of mercy, you might take me as I am?"

She was surprised by his boldness to say those things, and above all, touch her so freely. But, it was also very flattering and made her feel beautiful, so she didn't bother to stop him. Actually, she decided that she rather wouldn't mind him to continue.

"You flatter me." she told him with a smile "I would never dare question your bravery, my Knight. And, if there were any dragons or monsters after me, I am sure they are all gone by now." by this time, she wondered why doesn't the only other man in her life speak like this? Perhaps he didn't find her pretty enough?

Valentina didn't linger on that thought, since it was stupid to think about things she'll never find out and things that made her chest ache.

"I am a merciful Queen." she said finally "And I feel as if I could never refuse my brave knight." her teasing smirk appeared again on her face.
