Adrenaline had her moving fast, nearly blind as she barely registered what he had said. Horses.. horses. yes, getting to a horse would help assure that-

And something blasted nearby.. so close it wrung her ears and threw her forward. She must've screamed, her throat burned, but she couldn't hear and something was painful and wet and-
somehow she was on the ground, shaking and clutching onto a pool of blood that used to her foot.

"HOLY FUCK!" was what Tenran heard someone with his voice scream out loud when the explosion went off beside her. He stopped only a second and pulled her up from the dirt, and ran for the life of them both.

He clutched her too him and didn't care that the pain in his knee was escalating with every step. They would not die here, not this way. Maybe he would in some other time, but she deserved to grow old in a warm home, safe beside her own furnace. And he would see to it that she did.

With or without a foot.

All she felt was pain that robbed her of any thought, any emotion or ability to move. The world around them was in chaos, and she herself, not realizing how she clung To Tenran. Shock. It could cost her more than her foot, but what would it matter if the both of them died?

Tenran would blackout what happened next. And somewhere in the chaos of it all, an explosion erupted beside him, although not directly upon him, threw him off balance and he tumbled, landing hard on his back.  Dirt covered the pair, and they looked dead amongst the bodies of the soldiers and mages... 

They all were doomed, damned as was the rest of the world. Tenran was content with dying then and there if only the gods were kind enough.  He closed his eyes and let himself drift into darkness.

He thought it was the end.  A voice echoed above him.  "Hey.  Are you all right?" a young woman's voice breathed.  "Wake up!"

A meow...  Tufkins.  Tenran tried to sit up, except he was strapped down to a surface.

"Sorry. We needed to tie you down just to be sure. You're wife was in pretty bad shape when we found you. Lucky we got to you before those soldiers did," the woman said, seeming really sure of herself. "Don't worry, we're taking care of your wife."

"Li...Liana!"

Naturally, she wouldn't respond. Too much had taken it's toll on her and if losing her foot wasn't bad enough, the following explosion put her over the top.

"She's been asleep for nearly a week now, just like yourself," the woman went on, making a face when she heard the name. "Is that your wife's name? Liana," she repeated, and committed it to memory. "You gotta name too?"

"Y-yes," Tenran muttered.  God, his head felt like it was going to explode.

'T-Tenran," he spat, coughing and trying to look past the woman that was now glaring over him. Sure, she probably saved his life. but right now he needed to know she was okay.  "Please!  How is she?"

She laughed, like he'd made a fucking joke!  And he could feel himself burn with fury.  "Yeah, she is!  Don't worry so much.  Name's Callas. Nice to meet you, Tenran."

His anger was through the roof.
"Come sit by her if it'll make you feel better. Just don't go over emotional, alright? You could do more harm than good to her, assuming she comes around anytime soon." She placed a hand to her hip. "She's been fighting off a fever for a while." Her weight shifted. "We're doing our best."

He could sit.  He could move.  That was secondary compared to the fact that they've nearly died too many times in the last few days, hours, seconds.

Tenran obliged however, as being hysterical would get him nowhere.  He sat up, his body stiff with having been still for so long and he found himself thirsty and hungry.  Still he asked for nothing as he staggered, limping slowly, along behind Callas as she led him to Liana's side.

He gasped, holding his breath and wondering, hoping she would wake up soon.  No, don't look at her foot.  Just her eyes.  He sat down beside her and gently reached for her hand, eyes glassy but no tears came.  "Thank you.  Callas. If that's worth anything to you."

She nodded.
"I'll get you something to drink."

He was mostly left alone, tended to every so often; but it was seen he kept mostly at his wife's side. Or ex-wife, if they knew the truth of it. Who knew it had been another week, or a second, but eventually, the fevers seemed to die off completely and one morning, her eyes were no longer closed, and Liana was staring up quietly at the ceiling, breathing; but breathing soft and slow.

Somewhere in the waiting of it, Tenran's head had been slumped down against Liana's side. He hadn't eaten much in the time between now and first waking. He didn't dare leave her side though, and when she stirred, he carefully woke up, groggily.

Rubbing his eyes hard, he blinked at her curiously. "Li-Liana," he muttered, gently gripping her hand. "Liana, are you all right?"

It took her so long to form anymore words. She still hadn't a clue what was going on, or where she was. But she found herself easily clinging to Tenran.

Tenran's eyes grew hot, and he did what he could to keep those tears from forming. Just knowing she was still alive was a lot to take in.  He leaned in toward her, caressing her cheek and pressing lips to her temple.

"The soldier's camp was attacked. We ran. You were hurt, and these people here, found us and saved your life. They're mages I think...  Uou were asleep for a while, and I was here beside you the entire time."

Her mind was reeling. Seeing his tears brought about her own. She shook her head, eyes still uncertain.
"Attacked?"
And then she went to move, and the pain that shot up from her leg.. where her foot had once been, sent her screaming as she clutched onto Tenran suddenly and was breathing fast and in great gulps. She was shaking, a hand groping down her thigh, past her knee, down her calve to...

What could she say? What was she saying? She felt her lips tremble, hot tears bubbling uncontrollably down her face. Apologies, confusion, uncertainty, fear....
Eventually, she just buried her face into his shoulder, taking in what was familiar, what was safe and let herself sob, shake; as she clung to him.

That cathartic released, all they could do was let it all go, all that had built up in their years of misery, both shared and apart. Tenran wasn't going to let her go, he couldn't have even if he wanted to, the one person he'd shared more years of his life with than his own parents.

They were dead now, but Liana wasn't, and he clung to her her in her hour of distress, pressing his lips to her temple and brushing back the stray hairs that stuck to her forehead from the sweats.  "Liana," he murmured. "I'm not leaving you.  I'll be here for whatever you need me for. However long you need it. I love you. Letting you go was always my greatest regret."

She held onto him until the tears subsided. And she still didn't speak for a long while after. His words kept her latched to him, and the situation was overwhelming enough to keep her mute. After a long time had passed, she closed her eyes and buried her face against him again and whispered, "I love you too."

"I love you too," Tenran murmured again.  He just held her too him, just happy to finally have her alive again, that she was with him instead of alone as he'd left her. Soft lips touched her brow and he sighed into her skin.  "Liana."  He just wanted to say her name, feeling it rolling off his tongue and a tear fell onto his tongue, tasting the salt of it.
