This thread takes place during the time where Calent is much younger. His father has become so ill he can no longer rule, so the young Calent finds himself already needing to assume the throne earlier than expected. Being so young (in his teens) he's finding himself starting to fall into a world of over whelming suffocation through his obligations to his people, while also trying to figure out who he is as a person, and cope with many losses- that of his fiance, and now of his father, who remains too ill to get out of bed.

---------

All the candles in the room sat in low, melted piles; only a few left that danced still with life. They were scattered all around, no real placement or purpose, just to keep the place alive with light. Ever since his fiance's death, his terrifying nightmares had begun, riled him up and made sleeping a near impossible feat.

And now, with the wailing sounds of his ailing father echoing through the halls, Calent found himself staring down at the piano's keys that sat silent and still, except the glowing dance of the final flame that sat perched on the instrument. But then, in a crackle, then a whisper, the last candle went out, and Calen Allarrick found himself once again, in the dark.

As the smell of the candle's smoke faded, Calent's eyes adjusted to the darkness, now chilled as the calls of his agonizing father went quiet. He feared the worst and moved to enter the hall, but when he inquired about his father's condition, the doctor simply told him he was well, the medicine worked and helped put him to sleep.

Returning to his room with some relief, Calent found himself pacing throughout the room, before pausing to light a fresh candle and set it beside his vanity. Peering into the mirror, he studied his face, the way the shadows hugged at his skin, and saw parts of his father in him that he had never seen before. Many said he looked more like his mother, but he could see his father's broad chin and his familiar, thoughtful frown drawn across his own lips, and he wondered, idly, as his finger tips brushed across his frown, when and how HE would die.

Death was never a subject he liked to speak of, for the very idea of it terrified him to the core. And with death so suddenly rising up and becoming quite the real ordeal in his life...
He found himself being forced to recognize it-
But still, the fear was real, as was the panic.

And the silence was deafening. He felt stifled, hot, and soon moved over to his balcony doors and threw them open to where he was surprised to be met with the fierce winds of an oncoming storm. Standing there on the balcony, winds pulling t his clothing, his hair, he stared up into the moon, which was soon consumed by a lacing of dark clouds that set the world into an even blacker darkness while off int he distance, thunder purred.

While Calent wallowed in misery and fear, the room in which he was in seemed to glow with white light, a soft sort of light that was not too blinding, but noticeable nonetheless whenever he would turn back around. A sense of peace and harmony seemed to fill the room at that point, something so deep and soothing it could bring tears of joy to anyone's eyes, feeling the peace deep within their souls. Pretty soon, the beautiful sound of a harp from far off could be heard, playing a soft tune of comfort able to soothe many a frazzled nerve.

''Peace''. the word was quietly whispered, as the light grew steadily brighter, but still not too bright as to be uncomfortable. The sounds of the storm would seem to be far off, as though the troubles of the world were starting to melt away, becoming a place of refuge and solace for those that grieved within, fear slowly giving way to peace and light.

The harp music continued for some time, before the light gradually dimmed, the room becoming as it was before. The angel returned back to the highest reaches of her heavenly home, but not before giving the young man a chance of restful sleep. No dreams would frighten him tonight. He was given a night of peace and respite from some of his worries.

It was unusual that when he awoke, he felt... refreshed. But he was hardly ungrateful for it as he sat up, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. He had been so exhausted lately, and when even his sleep deprived him of any recuperation, he felt himself fall into an eternal fatigue.

But last night....
And even now...
Things felt different. He couldn't explain it, but even he felt different. Sitting at the edge of the bed, he searched the room and recalled what he heard, or that he thought he heard, in his dream.

Peace.

Was that what this was? He stared down at his hands before curling them into fists, and then rose to prepare for the day. But something drew him towards the balcony and he stepped outside, and was over come by the powerful, refreshing smell of the recently fallen rain.

Enkhtuya flew through the cosmic, heavenly mists until she reached her home, The Halls of Tranquility. The angel smiled as she felt inside her the results of her handiwork working on the troubled young man. For a small amount of time, he would know peace and serenity from his fears. It was not meant to be permanent however as he was only meant to be given a respite for a time. He needed to learn on his own how to best handle things. All Enkhtuya had done was give him a boost in that direction. Hopefully the rest would follow. After all, while angels could give help when and where needed, they could not indefinitely interfere in the lives of mortals.

For the next couple of days and nights, Calent Allarick would know some calm in his discordant, troubled self. As Enkhtuya arrived in the harmonic land of Tranquility, the Halls in the center of this realm rising up to greet the celestial being, she smiled once more, happy with her ability to help in some small way.

Finally finding peace, Calent was able to organize things just enough to figure out a plan of action for himself, and for his Duchy. But even as the weeks lingered in some sort of serenity, there was one day the cord seemed to cut between the angel's powers and that of something deeper seeded...
and dark.

And it was that time when the nightmare's returned and Calent awoke, drenched in sweat as heavy rains pounded down around the castle as he slept. He sat up, breathing heavily and raked a hand through his dark hair.

Had the nightmare's truly returned? He was too agitated to go back to bed to see as he lingered over by the massive window facing his bed, and simply watched as the rain continued to pelt and coat the glass.

Some time had passed since Enkhtuya's visit to Calent Allarick, although time passed differently in the Halls of Tranquility than on the mortal plane of existence. It was as the angel was soaring through the clouds of her heavenly residence, checking on her charges from afar to see how they fared, it was then she felt the peaceful connection sever from the young man she had blessed some days back.

The dark, chaotic magic that festered inside him had returned, bringing back with it his troubles and nightmares. Enkhtuya knew this would happen for it was inevitable. She only hoped that the help she had given him would teach him how to better manage his fears. Enkhtuya could do no more for now. When the time came to do so, the angel would help once more. But for now, it was up to Calent.

Calent went on to fester more over his thoughts, and just before daylight- he found himself asleep once again. But the darkness lingered, and he was barely asleep an hour before he awoke with a start, his body covered in sweat.

And as he moved, for some reason he looked around- as if sensing someone were watching him. But from what he could see..
He was still alone.

The angel gazed with pity and concern at the young man from afar. It seemed as though he could sense someone watching him, that someone being Enkhtuya but she was obviously not at all within view of him. She would check on him in about an Earth week's time, but for now the angel of peace had other matters to attend to. Hopefully by then, Calent will have better learned to conquer his fears. When a week had passed, Enkhtuya would consider her options further and help again where she could.

She flew off into the clouds to work on her other assignments, the white of her wings accented beautifully against the pale pinks, blues and whites of the sky terrain around her.

The week went on as usual, and the young Calent was thankful for the reprieve from his sleepless nights. However, come the week's end, the crawling hint of darkness ebbed at his mind, and he found himself tossing and turning fitfully until he awoke in a sweat and found himself staring up at the ceiling long into the night until the sun began to creep into his room. By then, he was thoroughly exhausted, but he did rise to get up and prepare for the day, discarding his clothing and making the orders for a hot bath.

Once the bath was assembled, he rested in the tub, lounging back with his eyes closed-
and found himself drifting off once again into those darker dreams that had him shivering as he slept.

As Calent began to drift off into the darkened corners of his mind where the nightmares lay waiting to grab hold of him once more, the sound of a harp could softly be heard then. A pale glow illuminated the room, filling it with a sense of harmony and blissful solitude as the angel enacted her divine powers again. The darkness seemed to abate somewhat, but still lingered as the strings of the harp were plucked in a calm manner from where the angel resided just out of reach of mortal sight.

The serene feelings would put the young Calent into a restful half-slumber, but not completely asleep so that he wouldn't accidentally drown. Enkhtuya had sensed the sorrowful emotions within him, his father's illness weighing heavily upon his mind and with it his own fears about death had returned since the last time she had visited.

Still strumming her instrument of choice, the soothing tune created waves of comfort that should take away some of that deep-seeded darkness for a time. It was a small thing to achieve really, but Enkhtuya would do what she were able for him. Calent still needed to fight this on his own however. Light rays filled the room before dissipating again to a normal ambiance.

The angel did one last thing before departing, which was to plant a small seed of peace in his mind, for it to grow as the days passed. He would need to find this small spark within himself though and nurture it before it could take full effect. But again, this was only a small tweak on her part. The rest was up to him for now.

[[Just wondering when you wanted Calent to actually meet Enkhtuya. Maybe another two posts before that happens?]]

OOC: Yeah, in a few posts would be fine :)

---------

Calent was surprised when it was one of his servants that woke him. How long had he slept? It must've been a while for the waters had turned cold and his fingers and toes, to prunes. Once he was dry and dressed, he felt oddly refreshed, and was about to go about his duties with more clarity. And it was needed, for a lot was put onto his plate. And being so young, it was still hard for him to keep his mind disciplined, though it surprised even himself when his mind would drift from time to time, and actually over thoughts that were positive and in his future.

He was to be engaged, the announcement to be made soon, and the idea made his heart flutter just so. But in the same thought, it tightened some of his heart, for he feared what true love could mean. And though he felt strongly for the girl he was to wed, he had never been fully himself for anyone in a while. And even his friend Audric had noticed his reclusive behaviors growing.

But Calent normally shrugged those off. But at the end of the day he felt.. well, different. And he found himself staying up late, just staring at the moon and listening to the quiet of his room, and the rustling of the trees as a cool breeze moved throughout the land. And it smelled of rain. It did rain a lot this time of year, especially in Allar. But normally when he'd cringe at the rain (or he would do so, at least, when he was younger), now he felt somewhat humbled by it-

And it had been a while but...
He felt truly at peace in that moment, watching as the clouds parted to reveal the twinkling stars.

Back in her heavenly home sitting on a cloud idly, Enkhtuya smiled as she felt the spark of peace and contentment within the young man grow. It seemed that her nudge in the right direction was starting to work and she could only pray that it would continue in that vein.

Flying downwards to the lush green ground below, the angel made her way over to the majestic white Hall in the center of the realm and made to enter. There was a meeting scheduled for all angels to attend and it would be a massive one for certain. All of them were to report as soon as they were able and so that's what she did. One of the matters being discussed was there had been talk of a growing unrest within the nation of Connloath in the mortal world that would make itself known one of these days, and those working on the case needed to be prepared come what may to mend the ills it would undoubtedly bring.

Enkhtuya knew that the young Calent would be a major player in the events to come, although the specifics were not always clear to the angels. Enkhtuya was not the only one concerned with the nation's future, as there was much to be done still...

Good news spread throughout the duchy. It seemed the Duke was recovering, after what they all feared would be a illness to do him in. His advisers, workers and the like, were quick to accommodate the healthier duke, while his son, Calent, was kept back to his seat of waiting.

Though he had nothing against his father, and even he himself felt he was a bit young to rule, to see his father's recovery, somehow, did not settle his heart. And it was on this night Calent sat by his father's side that he awoken, and called out to his son.

"Calent.. Calent is that you."

"Yes, father."

The man's eyes were sparkling in the night as he tried to adjust his vision to the darkness.
"Do you know why I am here, Calent?"

"I do not know what you ask. Do you mean in your bed? It is because you were ill."

His father shook his head. "That is what most would believe but I think I've caught something, something grave... an illness, maybe, or perhaps even a curse."

Calent's eyes searched his father.
"Curse? What do you mean?"

"I mean the curse of the Fell. The Fell to which I had traveled in my youth, an donly now I realize the consequences are grave."

Calent didn't understand.
"What do you mean?"

The man drew in a breath and sighed.
"Every man of this duchy has the duty to go to the fell, to ensure the cursed stay where they are, to prove their loyalty to Ansgar." ANd here, his father took his hand and squeezed it firmly. "I want you to promise me never to go there, Calent. Once you do, the nightmares will never cease will never sleep, and you will crave things you need not."

A coughing spell made his grip on his son's arm slacken and Calent sat back in dismay. Lttle did his father know... he had already made his journey to the Fell while he was sick. His advisers pressured the journey, fearful Calent would not have this rite of passage when his father passed. And once his father revealed such a statement, he felt something chill him to the bone.

His father's coughing fit did not go away, and soon a maid came in to tend to him. And Calent was excused, they would talk of this later. And Calent wondered if he ought to lie.

Some days after the celestial meeting had passed, Enkhtuya observed her charge Calent as he spoke with his father, who was now starting to recover. It seemed that his father had also been to the Fell and suffered from the same dark nightmares and troubling thoughts as his son did. The angel of peace sensed the turmoil in Calent's mind as he fought with himself as to whether or not to reveal the truth to the older duke. His father began to cough violently again as Calent was then ushered from the room. The celestial gazed down upon the young teenaged Calent in pity as he stood there momentarily, before going back to resume his activities.

Before he did though, Enkhtuya planted a small mental nudge in his mind to help with his indecision. "Just do whatever makes you feel at peace with yourself. Lies will only serve to further distance you from those you love."

Breaking the connection, the angel then resumed her other duties from her heavenly residence.

Long days and long nights continued as Calent's father remained still ill. But not much was spoken between father and son during those times, and Calent was set to completely forget what his father said.

Until that night. That one terrible, god awful night...
And he didn't even recall what had happened, but before he knew it-
He was in black, standing over the casket of his betrothed.

Though most had tear filled eyes for the girl who died so young, Calent remained flat, seeming bored even except for the far away look as he looked down at the dead girl. When approached, he brushed the hand away. He knew what the other asked. He knew about the rumors her favor towards 'mages'.

And when he turned to see who it was that tried to comfort him, he saw it was one of his friends. And when he spoke, he did not hear his words. Something about him 'looking pale', 'ill', acting differently...

But was he? How should he act standing over the dead body of his betrothed? It didn't help the rumors she was 'in love' with some rogue mage. Never mind how timid he had been with his feelings for her.

How was he supposed to act?

And so he retired that evening, mind and body like a stone; indifferent to the weight of the world-
and unknowingly...
Battling the unseen guilt of the blood he did not know was on his own hands.

The Never King- a king erased from history because of his dabblings in dark magic (among other things...) suddenly because a present day problem when an unlikely group of adventurers 'awakens' him from the grave. You can read more about the event on the plotting page here and information page here!

I ran the Connlaothian civil war. For more info, check out it's page here. The war has now turned into a 'Cold War' with it's plotting page found here. It's no longer a huge site wide event but the scars are there.

The funeral as most were, was solemn and subdued, quiet and mournful. The feelings washed over the angel in waves of sorrow and melancholy. Enkhtuya understood that the people needed to grieve over this loss and so did not manipulate their feelings of such into that of peace. However, she did let a slight ray of harmony enter the room, just a little smidgen to allow feelings of acceptance in, especially for the girl's family who looked like they couldn't believe what had happened. It was important for them to let their daughter go so that their own healing could start.

The most troubling of events was how the girl had died. Enkhtuya certainly hadn't seen that coming as she was not all-knowing, despite being an angel. Dead by the hands of the very person she was tasked to watch over and guide. Her charge was not aware of such happenstances and he needed to know so others wouldn't be hurt. It seemed accidental so the being of peace made a decision then.

It was time to pay young Calent a visit.

Sleep would not come to the young man, who was sitting up, staring at the cold stone walls of his room. Though many thoughts rolled through his mind, he couldn't figure out how he ought to feel-
until he felt himself choke, his eyes well up with hot tears, as he leaned forward, surprised to find himself beginning to cry.
